UNWELCOME DONORS THE frustration being experienced by the Kitwe Kitwe District Health Management Team director George Mukupa and his team are understandable considering what they are going through amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. They have to source for not only medicine but other items like protective clothing and oxygen. But what is frustrating them, as Dr Mukupa said, are the unfulfilled financial and material pledges towards supporting the fight against Covid-19 by prospective donors. According to Dr Mukupa, the district health team had in the recent past received a lot of financial and material pledges towards the fight against Covid-19, but most of those pledges have not been fulfilled. Yes, it is frustrating because in the first place, these pledges were not sourced, but companies made the promises as a corporate response to help the local community mitigate the effects of the pandemic. The Health personnel would feel encouraged when corporate bodies and other organisations join in the efforts to fight against the Covid-19. We feel for Dr Mukupa that organisations that make pledges should own up and deliver on their promises. Dr Mukupa was speaking at Kitwe Processing Limited when he received assorted items, among them face masks, hand sanitisers, hypochlorous acid, face shields, sprayers and two bales of blankets to help the district fight the Covid-19. The donation was made by the companies under the Kitwe and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Kitwe Hindu Society which forms the Kitwe District Task Response to Covid-19. It is common knowledge that the government alone cannot meet the costs of fighting the pandemic alone, it needs an input from business entities to supplement its efforts. The Covid-19 pandemic that has rocked the world has turned the world’s economy upside down. Countries have had to divert their financial resources to meeting the costs of treating their citizens who had been afflicted by the pandemic. The challenge has not just been sourcing medicine for a pandemic that has no known cure, but also acquiring the protective clothing the health workers need. This has been a costly exercise amidst shrinking national and global economic performance. For Third World countries like Zambia, the Covid-19 has more than doubled the country’s economic woes. There is less foreign exchange coming in amidst a rising health bill. The point made by Dr Mukupa in Kitwe could be a pointer to what could be happening throughout the country – where empty promises are made as a “public relations” exercise and never acted on. We are glad that in Kitwe, the Health management team has teamed up with the local chamber of commerce and other organisations like the Kitwe Hindu Society to form a taskforce. As Kitwe and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Anthony Kabaghe said, the taskforce was making a contribution because it believed that it had a role to play in the fight against the deadly Covid-19 pandemic. We hope Mr Kabaghe and his team would take it upon themselves to identify those companies making empty promises and impress upon them to make good on their pledges. They owe it to the local community and the country at large to join in the fight against Covid-19 which does not choose its victims.
ZAMBIA’S CYBERSPACE RESET BUTTON FACEBOOK

AMBIA was among the early adopters of the internet in sub-Saharan Africa with the installation of dial-up and satellite technology at the University of Zambia in the early 1990s, though access has grown slowly since then. As of December 2019, there were over 9.2 million internet users in Zambia, a penetration rate of 52.8 percent, according to the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA). The vast majority of internet users in Zambia rely on mobile internet subscriptions. A 2018 survey conducted by ZICTA showed that 14 percent of mobile phone users used smartphones, and 71 percent of smartphone users accessed applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and Messenger. Both the government and the opposition heavily rely on online resources, particularly social media, to advance their political agendas. There is a proliferation of pro-government and pro-opposition websites and social media pages, as well as WhatsApp groups. Pro-government and pro-opposition social media accounts have been known to publish false news. False news disguised to look like real reports or government statements have become a more prominent feature of the online disinformation landscape in the past few years. To address this proliferation of fake Facebook accounts that had been created under the President’s name and those of senior officials in Government, the ruling Patriotic Front and government officials have been issuing threats and warnings to social media users. As expected, the Cabinet’s approval to the publication and introduction in Parliament of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crime Bill has excited the Zambian public. Many of them are asking: To what extent would these pieces of legislation put the country’s cyberspace button on fact-check? Moreover, the Zambian government was concerned at the lack of comprehensive legislation that would provide for cyber security in the country which offered protection to
persons against cybercrime or that would provide child online protection. The law is intended to promote the responsible use of social media platforms. So, will the law act as Zambia’s cyberspace reset button? Known and unknown to many, the law also aims to ensure the provision of cyber security in the country, declaration and protection of critical information infrastructure, provide for the collection of and preservation of evidence of computer and network-related crimes as well as provide for the registration of cyber security services providers. A major challenge is from the UPND leadership which criticised the government’s upcoming cyber security bill, describing it as a danger to democratic norms. The bill debated before becoming law during the current parliamentary session, also attracted criticism from a raft of pro-UPND civil society or-
Strange as it may sound but reminiscent to their stance on Bill 10, when these pseudo-human rights groups in Zambia joined the fray and became wholly fixated with Bill 10 debates more than in any of their previous campaigns. Exploiting all available avenues, these pseudo-human rights fraternity filed numerous cases in the Zambian High Court in their vain attempts to block Bill 10 from being enacted into law by Parliament. It was then obvious that the UPND-LAZ partnership was using the civil societies and the parliamentary process to bolster the political fortunes of Mr Hakainde Hichilema. This open bias even came with brazen warnings by these pro-UPND activists that Bill 10 had adverse consequences, but try as they did, the warnings did not help their agenda. If anything, they unwittingly turned the voting but marginalised public, against Mr

debate on the issue held virtually on Zoom-platforms and in chambers was vigorous and bipartisan. Yet, most observers were not holding their breath and asked: Why did UPND lawmakers fight so hard to have the cyberspace bill withdrawn from Parliament? Nevertheless, buried in that observation is this nagging question: What was the UPND so afraid of? As in: Why has Mr Hichilema fought so incredibly hard for the past five-plus years to keep anyone from knowing his covert-relationship with UK-based SABI Strategy Group and South African-based Brenthurst Foundation’s cyberspace propagandists?

ganiSations (CSOs). In a joint statement, representatives from Chapter One Foundation, ActionAid Zambia, Alliance for Community Action (ACA), CiSCA and others, condemned the Cyber Crimes Bill as dangerous and in need of serious review. On Twitter, ACA’s Laura Miti described the provisions of the bill as “draconian” as well as “evil and self-interested in intent.” Yet, despite this CSOs’ choreographed rejection, the Las Association of Zambia still went on to call for the complete withdrawal of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Bill from Parliament, arguing that most of the provisions fell short of important constitutional requirements. And Chapter One Foundation insisted that the Bill had been rushed despite its broad implications that were detrimental to society.
Hichilema. In spite of all this, Transport and Communications Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya told Zambians not to limit the Cyber Security Bill to social media saying that was just part of the story when it came to the cyber environment. Mr Kafwaya added that the Cyber Security Bill would ensure that people who infringe upon other people’s freedom were dealt with by the provisions of the bill. He also said that the Cyber Security Bill was aimed at enhancing people’s rights and providing security, adding that it was unfortunate that some people were misleading Zambians that the bill was intended at taking away people’s rights when in fact it was aimed at enhancing their rights and protecting them from being abused on social media. And the parliamentary
With this knowledge, and under public scrutiny, the UPND leader has had to boost tactics as his view on cyberspace propaganda has always been what it is today. Besides, the technical assistance he gets in Western capitals and from opposition parties and civil society in the region has helped him “astroturf” with fake social media accounts, that have done more damage to the country’s reputation than just muddling legitimate news with false comments and untruthful tweets linking back to negative content – they have also made the Zambian general public susceptible to fake news on a myriad of social media platforms. In the meantime, Parliament continued debating the Cyber Crimes Bill. The deliberations were interrupted on Friday and will continue this week on Tuesday.

He said a number of companies have made pledges towards supporting the fight against Covid-19, but they have failed to fulfill the pledge. "As Kitwe district health team, I must say we are grateful for this gesture where you have fulfilled a pledge when those who made pledges a long time ago, have failed to fulfill the pledge. Don't worry. “We are partners and we should complement each other’s efforts especially when fighting pandemics like Covid-19 which have not only claimed many lives, but, left big and small economies devastated," Dr Mukupa said. And speaking earlier, Kitwe and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Anthony Kabaghe said the taskforce was making a contribution because it believed that it had a role to play in the fight against the deadly Covid-19 pandemic. Mr Kabaghe said the Hindu community has been instrumental in fighting poverty, hunger, disease and other challenges like Covid-19 which have been adversely affecting the economies of various countries. "We are here to make a presentation to the Kitwe Teaching Hospital as a Kitwe district task force response to Covid-19. The Hindu community and other members of the chamber have been doing this for a long time," Mr Kabaghe said.

ZAMBIA Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM) President Edwin Sakala has observed that politics have been commercialised in the country. Mr Sakala said in an interview that politicians are flashing out money to win support from the voters. He said that people are getting the money without asking where it was coming from. He called on the voters to question where the money being flashed is coming from. “Zambia is our country yet we are daily losing control over it. The best of everything seems to be in the hands of foreigners and a few privileged fellow citizens. There is massive poverty in the midst of plenty because the policies of our leaders are not tilted towards uplifting the standard of living for us, the common people,” he said. And Mr Sakala has observed that the media was only interested in covering politicians who they think are financially stable. He advised media houses and journalists in particular to
change their attitude towards other political parties by giving them fair coverage. “The problem with our media is that they only give coverage to political parties that ‘shine.’ That is the reason why some journalists are attacked because of only covering certain politicians and parties,” he said. Meanwhile, three political parties and a civil society organisation have formed an amalgamation called the Kwacha National Alliance which will back the New Heritage Party in this year’s elections. The four parties are ZDDM, Zambia Democratic Congress (ZADECO), Common Cause Democracy (CCD) and EX-ZAMSA Liberation Veterans Multipurpose Cooperative. Mr Sakala, who is chairperson of the alliance said after having carefully examined and analysed the vision, the mission and manifesto of the New Heritage Party, a number of political parties and civil society organisations have identified with this party, more than all others contesting the August 12 elections. He said the New Heritage Party has the best plan to salvage

there are other grounds but if it is based on whether the 17 months that President Lungu served in 2015 was a term, I don’t think anyone would succeed on those grounds. “I know there are some complicated arguments that are being offered, but I am sorry. I am very pragmatic, very practical. These judges clearly ruled that the period from 2015 to 2016 did not count as a term, meaning that time is not counted. So what makes you think that they will overrule their own judgement? Impossible!” he said. Mr Munshya said the ConCourt judges had already ruled that President Lungu is serving his first term of office and is therefore eligible to contest the
2021 elections. “I don’t need to look at the arguments of him being sworn in twice, that is a sheer waste of time. And when I say this, all my friends in the opposition are telling me that please, don’t say that. If you want to talk about it, ulelandako panono. But this is a straight forward matter,” he said. Both Mr Sangwa and Mr Bwalya have argued that President Lungu is not eligible to stand in 2021 because he has already been elected twice to the office of President as the law stipulates. Mr Sangwa has also threatened that he would lodge a presidential petition once President Lungu files in his nomination.

He said other parties have been granted observer status by the Kwacha National Alliance, as they await their approval from their central committees. Mr Sakala said the parties are All Peoples’ Alliance, All Peoples’ Congress and Party for Unity, Development and Democracy. And Ms Kateka said the party takes the responsibility seriously and is continuously preparing well not just for the election but for the time beyond that. She said the song of Zambia’s potential via diversification of the economy has been sang so many times and for so long that it has become jaded and yet, the potential of this country remains unrealised. Ms. Kateka stated that the vision for Zambia is to become the premier economic and productivity hub in southern Africa by 2030.

Ms Muleya said previously, manufacturers could claim VAT refund for fuel diesel bought on pump price. Ms Muleya said the SI has increased the fuel cost for manu-

UNION WANTS TRANSPARENCY IN TEACHERS’ RECRUITMENT By PETER SICHALI
P
ROFESSIONAL Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) has called for transparency in the forthcoming teacher recruitment exercise. PROTUZ Secretary General Kangwa Musenge said those with dented hands and are being investigated for corruption in relation to recruitment, promotion and transfer of teachers should not be
allowed anyway near the exercise. “This issue if not well handled will continue denting the name of government and the president therefore precaution should be taken,” Mr Musenge said. He said it is important for the government to prioritise volunteer teachers who have already been working and those who graduated a long time ago but have not been deployed. He said the current leadership at the Teaching Service Commis-
sion is questionable to handle this year’s recruitment exercise. “As PROTUZ we are very happy that government has finally announced this year’s teacher recruitment, we however feel the current leadership at TSC is questionable to handle clean teacher recruitment because of corruption allegations against them and should therefore not be allowed anywhere near this exercise,” Mr Musenge said. He said the forthcoming recruit-
ment exercise should have a clean passage starting with advertisement at District Education Board Secretaries, Provincial Education Officers and Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of General Education before going to the TSC. The Ministry of Education has been granted treasury authority to employ 1, 000 staff this year. Minister of General Education Dennis Wanchinga says those to be deployed include not only teachers but also support staff as well.
Stop acting like a toothless tiger, DEC challenged …Expedite investigations on Chinese firm’s fraud allegations - Kunda
By NATION REPORTER THE investigative wings should not act like toothless tigers in combating fraudulent activities but ensure that reported cases of irregularities are pursued vigorously, Governance activist Joseck Kunda has said. In an interview, Mr Kunda who is also Movement for Promoting National Values and Principles (MPNVP) chief executive officer said the attitude and response of the institutions tasked to carry out investi-
gations leaves much to be desired. Last week on Wednesday, the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) said it was still investigating fraud allegations against a Chinese company, Hua Jiang Investment which happened almost 10 years ago. It is alleged that Hua Jiang Investment was awarded contracts between 2014 and 2016 by Government to build 18 schools but failed to execute most of the projects despite being paid. DEC public relations officer, Theresa Katongo who
confirmed that they had instituted investigations however said she could not divulge much for fear of jeorpadising the investigation. But Mr Kunda said it was disappointing that DEC takes too long to investigate cases which in some instances end up without a clear outcome despite efforts by the public to report. He said the delaying of the fraud investigations was an impediment to implementing justice. “We are left in total despair wondering the kind

Even the likes of great statesmen have stepped in to offer parental guidance based on their wealth of political experience spanning over six decades. We are in agreement with the thoughts expressed by statesman and certainly there is meetings of the mind, Mr Hichilema is a selfish politician who want to use other political parties as a tool to be elected president. Campaigning kicks off in Congo-Brazzaville election BRAZAVILLLE - Election campaigns have begun in Congo-Brazzaville ahead of the presidential poll in just over two weeks' time in which the incumbent, Denis Sassou Nguesso, is seeking a fourth term. Apart from a five-year period he has been leading the country since 1979 and will face six opposition candidates among them two former ministers, Mathias Dzon and Guy-Brice Parfait Kolélas, who have become fierce critics of the president. – BBC.
…Will Mogoeng apologise for comments on Israel? Still no response from his office
J
OHANNESBURG - There is still no word from the Office of the Chief Justice on whether or not Mogoeng Mogoeng will heed the order of the Judicial Conduct Committee (JCC) that he apologise and retract comments made about his love for Israel during a webinar last year. When contacted on Friday, Nathi Mncube, spokesperson for the Office of the Chief Justice, said he had not yet discussed the matter with Mogoeng, and was unable to give official comment.
Last year, while facing criticism over his comments, Mogoeng said he would neither retract nor apologise for comments. Speaking at a virtual Africa prayer meeting, Mogoeng said: Even if 50 million people can march every day for the next 10 years for me to retract or apologise for what I said, I will not do it. I will never say I hate anybody, or any nation. I will never. I love everybody. I love Israel, I love the Jews, I love Palestinians... The JCC was tasked with probing several
complaints against Mogoeng, and whether he contravened the Code of Judicial Conduct. The complaints were brought by Africa 4 Palestine, SA BDS Coalition and the Women's Cultural Group. The committee found, among others, that Mogoeng involved himself in political controversy or activity. On Friday, the South African Communist Party also called for Mogoeng to comply with the decision. It said Mogoeng should "humble him-
self, and unreservedly apologise." On June 23, 2020, Mogoeng participated in a webinar with the Chief Rabbi of South Africa, Rabbi Warren Goldstein. The webinar was hosted by an Israeli newspaper, The Jerusalem Post, under the theme: Two Chiefs, One Mission: Confronting Apartheid of the Heart. Mogoeng was asked about his previous utterances with regard to his "love for the Jewish people, for Israel, for the state of Israel…” However, Judge

Pope Francis and top Shia cleric Ali al-Sistani discuss plight of Iraq's Christians BAGHDAD - Pope Francis has discussed the safety of Iraq's Christian minority with one of Shia Islam's most powerful figures, on his landmark trip to the country. Like many communities in Iraq, Christians have been hit by waves of violence over the past two decades. The office of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, spiritual leader of millions of Shia Muslims, said the talks had emphasised peace. The meeting was seen as a highly symbolic moment in the Pope's visit. The Pope is on his first international trip since the start of the pandemic - and the first ever papal visit to Iraq. Covid-19 and security fears have made this his riskiest trip yet. Now is not time to relax pandemic efforts, says WHO GENEVA - The arrival of Covid-19 vaccines should not tempt countries to relax efforts to fight the coronavirus pandemic, top World Health Organisation officials said on Friday, citing particular concern about the situation in Brazil. “We think we’re through this. We’re not,” Mike Ryan, WHO’s top emergency expert, told an online briefing. “Countries are going to lurch into third and fourth surges if we’re not careful.” Meanwhile, Rwanda began its Covid-19 vaccine campaign on Friday, becoming the first nation in Africa to use pharmaceutical company Pfizer's doses that require ultra-cold storage. Authorities began transporting Pfizer and AstraZeneca shots round the hilly nation of 12 million people after they arrived earlier this week, using helicopters to reach far-flung parts. "This means that I will die when God wants because the coronavirus cannot kill me now," 90-year-old Stephanie

As in most nations, health workers and the elderly are first in line as President Paul Kagame's government plans to vaccinate up to 30 percent of Rwandans by the end of this year. The Kagame government, which prides itself on efficiency and technological prowess but is often criticised as authoritarian, has installed special infrastructure to keep the Pfizer vaccine at the required -70 degrees. At some centres, people were required to sign consent forms before receiving the shots. Sitting in a makeshift tent awaiting her turn, Urusaro Ntoranyi, 70, said she was confident the vaccine was safe. IGH flying Nkwazi FC and Green Eagles redeemed themselves from defeats to Zanaco FC and Green Buffaloes respectively after beating Buffaloes and Kitwe United in their respective Week-21 fixtures. Nkwazi punished Buffaloes 2-1 in a Lusaka derby while Green Eagles outplayed Kitwe United at Garden Park Stadium to emerge victorious. Defender Crowford Mwaba and Christopher Zulu were on target as the Dennis Makin-
ka-coached Nkwazi flew high to pick their first win in four games having struggled with two draws and one defeat in the last three games. Mwaba put Nkwazi ahead five minutes after the half hour mark before Friday Samu scored the equaliser for Buffaloes in the 53rd minute. However it was Zulu who scored the winner for Nkwazi who moved to 10th on the Super Division table with 27 points as Buffaloes maintained 12th position with 22 points. Meanwhile, a solo goal from Warren Kunda gifted struggling Green Eagles an important win
which propelled them to 28 points. “For us it is a very good result because we have been struggling to get a positive result and coming here to get a positive result is a good thing. We know that Kitwe United are on the bottom on the league table but they are playing well it is just that they are not scoring goals,” said Eagles coach Aggrey Chiyangi after the match. Man City face Man Utd test on march towards history MANCHESTER City have history in their sights as the runaway leaders bid to take a huge step towards the Premier League title in today's showdown with fading challengers Manchester United. City are 14 points clear of United with 11 games left and victory in the derby would effectively end their second-placed rivals' faint hopes of catching them. Pep Guardiola's side have been so dominant since the end of last year that it is the landmarks they can shatter on the
way to a third title in four seasons that now hold the greatest interest. They are unbeaten in 28 games and will set a new club record if they avoid defeat this weekend. That could be the first of many milestones to fall for City, who are on an English top-flight record run of 21 successive wins in all competitions. The only teams from the top five European leagues ever to record longer winning streaks in all competitions are Bayern Munich (23) and Real Madrid (22). City can edge closer to Bayern's tally if they clinch a 16th successive Premier League victory this weekend, which would also take them to the brink of their own record of 18 consecutive Premier League wins, a mark shared with Liverpool.

ROOSTER FITTED WITH KNIFE FOR COCKFIGHTING KILLS ITS OWNER
A
ROOSTER fitted with a knife for an illegal cockfight has killed its owner as it tried to escape by slashing his groin, police in India have revealed. The fighting cock had a blade strapped to its leg ready to take on an opponent when it tried to flee the vicious blood sport. His owner was cut and rushed to hospital in rural Telangana state but died of blood loss before he arrived. The killer rooster was briefly held at the local police station earlier this week before it was
sent to a poultry farm. The man’s death has sparked a manhunt for the organisers of the illegal competition, at which another 15 people were participating in the village of Lothunur. ‘We are searching for the other 15 people involved in organising the illegal fight,’ local police officer B. Jeevan told AFP. They could face charges of manslaughter, illegal betting and hosting a cockfight. Cockfights are banned but still common in rural areas of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Odisha states – particularly around the Hindu festival of Sankranti.
Specially-bred roosters have three-inch knives or blades tethered to their legs and punters bet on who will win the gruesome fight. Thousands of roosters die each year in the battles which, despite the efforts of animal rights groups, attract large crowds. Cockfighting was banned in England and Wales in 1835 and sixty years later it was also banned in Scotland, where it drew large crowds on Glasgow’s Queen Street throughout the 17th century. AFP

In a bid to convince him to reconsider taking his life, she reportedly told him that she will keep the “secret”, but all that fell on deaf ears. Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the incident, describing it as a sudden death case. “I can confirm a sudden death report involving a Binga man Joseph Tshuma from
Kamwindi Village in Lusulu who hanged himself on 16 February 2021 after being caught by his wife, Senzeni Sibanda, committing bestiality with a cow. Since no foul play was suspected, a post-mortem was waived by Binga magistrate,” she said. However, villagers in Kamwindi are still in shock. According to villagers, on the day, the 61-year-old Tshuma left his wife in bed at around 6am pretending to be going to check on his cattle in the kraal near the homestead. While at the kraal, the man allegedly tied one of the cows on a pole and commit-
ted bestiality. Instinctively, his wife also decided to follow him ostensibly to check on one of the bulls which was sick the previous day. Villagers said when she got to the kraal, she almost collapsed after seeing her husband sexually abusing the animal. “When Tshuma saw his wife, he just froze and could not even master the energy to say a word. The wife, unsure of how her husband will react, rushed back to the house in disbelief,” said a villager who refused to named. It is said Tshuma out of shame, removed the rope
that he was tying the cow with and shouted to his wife that he was going to hang himself. When she heard the threat, the wife rushed back to the kraal and started pleading with her husband not to kill himself, promising him that she will keep the incident a secret. However, it is said Tshuma had already tied the rope around his neck and fastened it to a tree branch near the kraal. Upon realising that her husband would not budge, she started shouting for help from neighbours. However, before neighbours could arrive, Tshuma hung himself while his wife watched in disbelief. It is said she tried to climb the tree with the hope of cutting the rope but failed and all she could do was to watch the last moments of her husband. When villagers later arrived, Tshuma was already lifeless, a source close to the family said. THE SUNDAY NEWS
Stray love message lands woman in trouble A WOMAN from Lupane Business Centre was battered by her angry husband after he stumbled on a ‘‘stray’’ love message on her phone.
Caroline Moyo (23), who is a nurse aide, had to dash to a police station to report physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband Musa Moyo (38). The matter was then referred to court. She told the court: “We were relaxing at home then I received a stray love message on my WhatsApp from an unknown man. My husband, who was just sitting next to
me, saw the love message which read: ‘I love you and I cannot wait to meet up with you’. After that he started to accuse me of cheating on him and labelled me a prostitute who sleeps with her colleagues.” Caroline described her husband as an abusive
monster who is in the habit of bashing her whenever a misunderstanding arises between them. “My husband is very abusive, whenever we have a misunderstanding, he gets angry quickly and hurls insults at me, at times he bashes me while accusing me of
being a stubborn woman of loose morals,” she told the court. Musa shot down his wife’s defence: “I strongly believe the love message was from her lover because when I tried to wrestle her phone from her so that I could send the message to my phone to use it as an exhibit she quickly deleted it and that cemented my suspicion that she was cheating on me.” Magistrate Ndumo Masuku found Musa guilty and ordered him to pay a $10 000 fine. If he fails to pay, he will have to spend three months in prison. - H- METRO
Man in hospital bed has people losing their minds as he’s actually made of cake THERE were loads of great ones, but now it seems we might have to crown a winner for the challenge.
An image of the rapper Slowthai lying in a hospital bed has gone viral after people discovered that it’s not what it seems, reports The Daily Star. The picture is taken from the musician’s Feel Away video and his head and torso are in fact real - but it turns out the rest of his body is actually made of cake. WHAT?! The life-like cake was revealed to be a sweet treat on Instagram, by the talented creator Ben Cullen, also known as The Bake King. Posting photos of the cake on his page, Cullen wrote: “When I turned @slowthai into CAKE! Tbt. “Made for his music video ‘Feel Away’ - all his body parts were made from vanilla cake
and chocolate ganache with sugar paste details!” Before and after snaps were shared on social media, with the first showing a close up of the man’s arm and doctor’s appearing to be treating him. However, in the second creepy photo, it becomes clear that the doctors aren’t hard at work - they’re tucking into cake and the arm has been sliced up, with a hand sitting separately at the end, palm down. People on the internet lost their minds over the snaps, with one saying: “This is so disturbing!!” Another replied: “This is fantastic and creepy at the same time.” “I’m not sure how I feel about this,” admitted a third. Someone else posted: “Noooo way, nope, no no no, we’re not bringing this trend back to life.” A different user added: “This is amazing but horrifying!” - MIRROR

SUNDAY NATION March 7, 2021 By TERENCE MISELO AROUND the world, women holding positions of power in the corporate arena has always been a rare phenomenon. This is so because historically, men have dominated decisionmaking positions for years, making women’s presence in many workplaces almost invisible. Luckily, times are changing. In recent years, women have made steady and fast progress in the corporate arena, delivering impressive results at the workplace including exciting gains in other areas of life. According to Catalyst, a global non-profit organization, the proportion of women in senior management roles globally has grown to 29%, the highest number ever recorded. Interestingly, this is no different in Zambia. The status of women has improved over time. There has been a shift in leadership positions for women. More and more women are now coming on board to take up positions of power and influence to lead, and they are making a huge difference. Today, one shining example of companies making a mark and doing so well in the marketplace with women at the helm of leadership is MultiChoice Zambia. Africa’s leading entertainment giant has put women at the core of decision making, particularly in Zambia. At MultiChoice Zambia, 70% of senior positions are being held by women. In other words, this means that, every ultimate decision a company makes, has a woman’s voice in it. Fittingly, the space for a woman’s voice at MultiChoice Zambia is a source of inspiration. And this, speaks volumes of how a firm, like MultiChoice Zambia, has managed to remove all artificial barriers women and minorities face from advancing up the corporate ladder in a typical multinational, growing and big company. Mrs Leah Kooma, Chief Customer Officer, MultiChoice Zambia confirms this, “MultiChoice Zambia is a great example of how women can rise through ranks, overcom-

Mrs Leah Kooma, Chief Customer Officer, MultiChoice Zambia ing barriers that sometimes can hinder women’s progress. “My experience at MultiChoice is great, MultiChoice means a lot, it means it’s a business that looks at diversity, it’s a business that gives people an opportunity and not just giving them an opportunity because of their gender saying they are women but it recognizes people who are hardworking, people who have worked and earned those positions in the business,” said Mrs Kooma. “What drives me is making a positive change in society and everywhere I am,” a cheerful Mrs Kooma stressed. In fact, studies have shown that companies that have the best records for promoting women outstrip their competition on every measure of profitability. This is a secret behind MultiChoice Zambia successful brand in the marketplace. But what difference do woman make? It’s known that increasing the number of women in leadership positions makes the difference. When women are in power, they bring unique skills, they offer different perspectives to everything and this ultimately makes the difference and helps bring solutions to problems. It’s that simple! Mrs Selina Nyirenda, Head Corporate Affairs, Southern African Region at MultiChoice is one of the women that has brought that difference and is proud to be one of the women that rose to influential positions. Mrs Nyirenda has seen it all. Her journey with MultiChoice Zambia has been both interesting and challenging. “I joined at a senior level at MultiChoice Zambia, and with support from my teammates I have risen through. In all, MultiChoice is a place with the right structures that encourages women to take up
Mrs Selina Nyirenda, Head Corporate Affairs, Southern African Region at MultiChoice leadership positions by grooming them and providing them with the necessary requirements to excel in these positions,” she notes. Obviously, to get more women into corporate positions, companies need to break the cultural biases against women, stereotypes and a change in mentality. When this is done, a company stands to benefit a lot from women in positions of power. Sallie Krawcheck, co-founder and CEO of Ellevest, an innovative digital investment platform designed to help women reach their goals once remarked, “Nothing bad happens when women are in positions of power.” Reflected in this, is MultiChoice Zambia belief in women leadership. On all fronts, women are at the heart of MultiChoice Zambia. The business has harnessed the skills, capabilities, ingenuity, creativity and genius of women, which has ensured a common sense of purpose, unmatched by any other competitor till today. This distinction is what makes MultiChoice Zambia an attraction and a dream company of every woman to work for. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s remember to reflect on the progress women have made in all circles. Let us celebrate acts of courage by women shown in extraordinary roles on many fronts and especially at MultiChoice Zambia. Ever thought a glass ceiling would never be broken? Well, I have news for you, women at MultiChoice Zambia have done so! Believe in that woman’s potential, and your firm might just be next. Happy International Women Day!

O
ver one third of Zambia’s land mass has been dedicated to wildlife conservation. The creation of 20 national parks and 43 game management has ensured that Zambia’s wildlife populations have adequate land on which to exist, if not flourish. However, despite this a problem persists.
Often where there is a congregation of wildlife around a particular set of natural resources such as fresh water and fertile land, there are also human communities that seek to benefit from those same resources. This creates a human-wildlife interface which is rife with challenges, particularly human-wildlife conflict. Human-wildlife conflict is a broad term for the negative interactions between people and wild animals. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) aptly describes this conflict as one of the main threats to the continued survival of many species in different parts of the world and a significant threat to local human populations. In other words, human wildlife conflict has far-reaching consequences for both people and wildlife. Conflicts between humans and wildlife have existed since humans started roaming the earth. However, in many regions these conflicts have intensified over recent decades as human populations grow and human activity increases. In theory it is easy enough to keep humans away from a particular area of concern. Firstly, we can pass legislation which can be brought into effect by law enforcement. We can build fences and walls and can erect signposts that clearly show an area is out of bounds. However, none of this means very much to wild animals. They have no understanding of our ever-changing rules and regulations, they move as they please, and rightly so, it is coded into their very DNA. Also as human populations increase their movement patterns change thus making interactions with wildlife increasingly common. In early February 2021 there were reports of an injured buffalo roaming the streets of Livingstone. Sadly, a number of people were reported to have been injured in the incident and the ani-
THE PEOPLE VS WILDLIFE A discussion of human-wildlife conflict in Zambia
mal has since been put down. Incidents like this where an animal injures people are far from a daily occurrence in Livingstone but are still cause for concern. Parts of the city of Livingstone are within the boundaries of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it is no surprise that interactions between humans and animals such as elephants and hippos are common. While wildlife interactions maybe perceived to be a thorn in the side for some, wildlife remains an invaluable resource to our ecosystems and life as we know it. Therefore, it is imperative that we find ways to co-exist and that is where organizations such as The Conservation and Tourism Society (CATS) come in. Founded in 2018 CATS is a Livingstone-based nonprofit organization, that raises awareness on the conservation of wildlife and the environment. It is comprised of volunteers who engage with communities providing education on how to live with wildlife taking into consideration the sometimes-devastating effects animal interactions can have on people. According to one of its founding members Jacob Kampindu, organizations like CATS understand that human
wildlife conflict often severely impacts the livelihoods, security, and wellbeing of the very same people whom conservationists rely on to achieve their goals. Therefore, CATS treats the Livingstone communities they work with as conservation partners. Through their school outreach program, they teach young children the love and responsibility for the
planet and its many inhabitants. During their community-wide sensitization efforts they instruct communities on how to handle interactions with different types of wildlife and alongside the Department of National Parks and Wildlife are often the first responders to reports of wildlife in the city. CATS believe that “If you want to change the
world, you have to empower people. That’s the only way you can make any permanent effective change on the world” - David Stirling Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits all solution to the conflicts that arise when there is competition for resources. There are numerous underlying cultural, political, and economic aspects that
shape these conflicts and many stakeholders with various interests that need to be addressed. Thus, these conflicts often play out between stakeholders, and thus can sometimes be referred to as ‘human-human conflicts’ for example the community affected vs the conservationists. Extensive research and collective experiences across the world have shown that one case of human wildlife conflict is quite different from the next, making it difficult to devise easily transferable solutions. Therefore, interdisciplinary approaches are essential to understanding the causes of the conflict, the various stakeholder that must be engaged in solutionmaking, an understanding of what is needed to implement solutions, and funding to implement. This can seem overwhelming and dauting to address however, the future looks a little brighter in Zambia where men like Jacob are volunteering to serve their communities, partnering with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife as well as local community leaders to ensure that our wildlife heritage is not lost and that the needs of communities living near wildlife sanctuaries are acknowledged.

START UP MASTER PLAN By NAMWANJA MARGARET CHIKWABI
I
N Start-up Master Plan: A quick guide to launching your business (2019), author Clive Kalambo presents a business self-help book that can best be described as practical. As put in the title, the book is a good source of information for the novice business person or entrepreneur. Some title chapters are Patience in Business, Branding and Marketing, Watching Your Expenses, Timing and Focus on Clients. At 127 pages, Start-up Master Plan contains short paragraphs focusing on specific issues in the realm of business. In the very first chapter Identify Your Passion, Clive Kalambo submits that having a passion for your business endeavour does not shield you against business storms, but gives you an extra and invisible drive and energy to march on when the going gets tough. He adds that having a passion for something ensures that your work eventually feels like play, and there’s no bet-
M
ONDAY, March 8 this year is International Women’s Day, one of my favourite holidays, and I want to celebrate it by, you guessed it, writing about women. You know that I frequently talk, write and think about women and I make no apologies for my belief that women are arguably the most important subject in the world. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine an intelligent and productive discussion of any human topic, whether it be faith, politics, health or culture, without reference to women. That is why it is pathetic to note that there are still some male chauvinists deluding themselves into thinking that they can conduct meaningful business without the involvement of women. Did you hear of the tragicomical fall of the Tokyo 2020/2021 Olympics Organising Committee former boss, Mr Yoshiro Mori, who did not want women on his team because they “talk too much”? Mr Mori’s utterances were really the nadir of sexist ignorance and prejudice. What kind of “talk-metre” was he using to measure his “too much”? In my celebration of International Women’s Day, how-
ter feeling than that. When it comes to Watching Your Expenses, the novice entrepreneur is warned against overzealousness but should set a realistic budget that he/she can work within. Additionally, spending one’s profits anyhow is frowned upon, no matter how big the business gets. One’s aim must always be to make sure that the gap between the business’ income and expenses is ever widening. Getting and keeping receipts for every purchase made and tracking this on a daily or weekly basis is a good way to know how and where the money in that business is being spent. Therefore, financial discipline is vital for the sustainability of one’s business. On Trading Within the Law, emphasis is made on working within the confines of the laws that govern that business. The author gives an example of a friend of his who opened up a bar and restaurant in one city to great fanfare. The business was doing well until one day when local council officials paid a visit to the premises. It was discovered that the business only had
a liquor license and no food license. That business was shut down immediately. The moral of the story is that ensure that whatever business you’re operating should be within the rules and regulations of the land. To the author Clive Kalambo’s credit, Start-up Master Plan is an easy read, easy to understand and is written in simple, clear language. So, the reader need not worry about business jargon and that is a good thing. As was noted earlier, the chapters are presented succinctly, although with the obligatory quotes from such personalities as Zig Ziglar, Napoleon Hill, Benjamin Franklin, etc., at the start of every chapter. Nonetheless, the substance of the book overrides these. What also works in the book is the author highlighting his own personal business endeavours, including where he failed and what he did better the next time around. Whatever the area of business you’re embarking on, there are more than a few chapters that will be useful to you as a novice entrepreneur in this book. It is a practical guide.
SECRETS OF A FEW WOMEN WHO HAVE INFLUENCED ME ever, I wanted to get more personal and specifically mention a few East African women who have contributed significantly and directly to my intellectual and professional growth. I should preface my mentions with a lot of exceptions, explanations and apologies, which I know will still not satisfy all. So, I skip the apologies and proceed to complimenting the inspiring women. Random memory Suffice it to say that the three friends I introduce to you here came to mind mostly from random memory, apart from the fact that each of them represents one of our original Jumuiya Asiliya homes (Kenya, Uganda Tanzania). Each one of them, too, as I have hinted, positively contributed to my writing, reading and teaching journey. Dr Anna Kishe comes from Tanzania, Professor Angelina Nduku Kioko is Kenyan while Professor Helen Nabasuta Mugambi is Ugandan, though with strong Kenyan
family connections. On a little reflection, however, it occurred to me that all three of these women share traits of character that not only endeared them to me but also inspired me to emulate them and aspire to be a more efficient teacher and scholar. These qualities are selfconfidence, a genuine love and devotion to their work, a generous empathy with their friends, a tender eagerness to share with their colleagues and an unshakeable faith in the potential of those around them. I need not tell you that all three of my friends are topflight high achievers. Their titles speak for themselves. But it was while I was working on specific projects with each of them that I gained the deepest insights into what makes them really great. The precious qualities that I claim to have discovered in them were most noticeable when you interacted up close with them. Anna Kishe is a Kiswahili
and Linguistics expert, with decades of teaching experience at major universities in Tanzania. Most eminently, she was for many years the Executive Secretary of the National Kiswahili Council of Tanzania (BAKITA). During her tenure there, she was selected to represent her country and head the Task Force to set up what is now the East African Kiswahili Commission. I served under her, as Uganda’s representative on the Task Force, alongside my friend, Prof Kimani Njogu, who represented Kenya. I was the only non-Kiswahili expert on the panel, as you can see, yet Dr Kishe’s respect, generosity and encouragement towards me was boundless. She entrusted me entirely with the mobilisation and consultation processes of the Task Force in Uganda, a “problem” area, as you know, and she did her best to accommodate the Waganda’s views into the final memoran-
dum. Most memorably for me, Dr Kishe invited me to deliver a keynote address to a distinguished audience in Dar es Salaam at the Siku ya Kiswahili (Kiswahili National Day) in 2006. I still regard the date as a milestone in my conversion to Kiswahili. Prof Angelina Kioko, whom I mentioned in an earlier article, is Professor of English at the United States International University, Africa Campus (USIU-A), in Nairobi. Previously, she was my colleague at Kenyatta University. But Prof Kioko has also been my longest time partner and collaborator in the development and writing of educational materials. Long perseverance It is in this process that I have come to appreciate and admire Prof Kioko’s feel for and insight into language. I credit my surprisingly long perseverance on our writing team to Prof Kioko’s simple but flattering suggestion that I
should stay on because I “can tell stories”. Incidentally, Prof Kioko was my undergraduate student, a first-class honours one, at KU, back in the years. Helen Nabasuta Mugambi, too, was my student, but even further back in time, and at Makerere. She had to abandon her MA course and flee Uganda in the terror following the abduction and murder of Esther Chesire in 1976. She has been living, studying and teaching in the US ever since. She retired only recently as a tenured Professor of English and African-American Studies at the California State University at Fullerton. One of Prof Mugambi’s most touching and humbling gestures towards me has been her constant reference to me as an adviser and reviewer of nearly all of her writings and publications. What more could an old teacher ask from a trusting disciple who has achieved international fame? - DAILYNATION, Kenya
