CHURCH COUNSELLING AS the nation heads towards the August 12 elections, the political atmosphere is getting tenser and it is important that the church plays its rightful role of counseling and uniting the citizenry. There are many verses that can be quoted to show why it is important for any person, especially leaders need to listen to the counsel of particularly the church. The Bible says in Proverbs 13:10 By insolence comes nothing but strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom. Rather than indulging in divisive and disrespective language, political leaders need to commit to peace building in order to foster the spirit of unity in the country. Even as individuals vie for political office through different political parties, they ultimate prize they all seek is to serve the people. It therefore goes without saying that such individuals need to have the interest of the people at heart. It is easier to lead a united nation than one that is scattered. Without a doubt, the church has a crucial role to perform in ensuring the unity and security of the country is maintained by preaching a message of unity and conciliation. President Edgar Lungu yesterday reminded the church to give counsel to all politicians to uphold the rule of law before, during and after the August 12 elections. Some leaders are known for inflaming their members to commit acts of violence as opposed to discouraging such behavior. In the name of self defence some cadres have been known to be armed and end up committing offences. There is no need for anyone to be carrying pangas or machetes in the name of self defence, especially in a Christian nation. Yesterday President Edgar Lungu called on the church to counsel politicians to respect the rule of law during and after elections. Speaking when he laid a foundation stone for the construction of Bible Gospel Church in Africa multipurpose hall in Lusaka, Mr Lungu said the church has a role to play in ensuring that peace and harmony prevail in the country. President Lungu said Zambia being a Christian nation, the church should pray for love. "We are all expected to be patriotic citizens and uphold our nation’s motto of one Zambia one nation to enable us co-exist during this period. Speaking earlier BIGOCA general overseer, Archbishop Peter Ndhlovu implored political cadres to desist from engaging in violence. Both Bishop Ndhlovu and the President emphasized on peace being the cornerstone of a Christian nation, and more so as the election mood engulfs the nation. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) yesterday did its part in ensuring that the individuals vying for public office at different levels, understand what is expected of them. It was also an opportunity to ensure prospective candidates understand that violence or sponsorship of violence would not be tolerated. Aspiring candidates should compete for votes by selling themselves through their manifestos or plans and not by intimidating their opponents or indeed by spreading falsehoods. As a democracy, Zambia allows for the existence of divergent views through individual freedoms or indeed societal organisations or clubs called political parties. Rather than being openly biased, the church should spend more time evangelizing to political leaders and encouraging them to respect the electoral process. Spread the Gospel with peace and love as Christ taught the disciples.
As Zambians go to the presidential, parliamentary and local government legislative polls in August this year, another worrying ingredient has been added to the mix. It is what some observers are calling “founder’s hereditary dynasty syndrome”.
IS IT OUT WITH THE OLD UPND MONZE CENTRAL CONSTITUENCY LEGISLATOR?
F
IFTEEN years after UPND founder late Anderson Mazoka’s death, his widow and Pemba constituency lawmaker Mutinta Christine Mazoka reportedly told Hakainde Hichilema to adopt her daughter Mutinta Mazoka for Monze Central Constituency. Her daughter faced competition from incumbent legislator Jack Mwiimbu who had been serving as MP since 2001. She wanted her daughter to be adopted at all cost because it was her father who formed the party and the incumbent had been MP for Monze Central Constituency for a long time but has done very little for the people in his constituency. She also reminded the current party president that she was one of the influential people who made sure that he was the one who succeeded her late husband in 2006 hence he owed her and her daughter a favour in return. Was it a considered case of quid pro quo, perhaps? What of a political dynasty? Quid pro quo is a Latin phrase used in English to mean an exchange of goods or services, in which one transfer is contingent upon the other; "a favour for a favour". Phrases with similar meanings include: "you scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours too", among others. Whereas dynasty is defined as a succession of rulers from the same family or line; or a family or group that maintains power for several generations. A political dynasty entails the concentration, consolidation, or perpetuation of public office and political power by persons related to one another. In truth, political dynasty is a term that is as old as politics itself. For the ancient civilizations their rulers were concerned with maintaining their legacy, the royalty would be passed from parent to child to ensure the family name continued on down the ages. In demanding that her daughter must be adopted because UPND was founded by her daughter’s late father, Mrs. Mazoka obviously put Hichilema in a sticky situation of choosing between his close confidant and his late mentor’s daughter. For the moment, though, the UPND leader was between a rock and a hard place – between the incumbent UPND Monze Central lawmaker seemingly entrenched in contesting in the upcoming elections and a myriad of disillusioned Monze Central constituents seemingly entrenched in seeing him out of the forthcoming parliamentary race. With the on-going parliamentary and
local government candidates’ adoptions, it is Catch 22 for the UPND president: on the one hand he is expected to readopt the incumbent Monze Central lawmaker who happens to be his close confidant – long thought to typify his time at the helm of the opposition party – as opposed to the optional candidature of his yet-to-benamed running mate that is believed to be reserved for a Bemba-speaking contestant. On the other hand, he has to play the democratic non-committal political leader and let Mutinta Mazoka stand as an independent – knowing full well that the cost of doing so might be to the advantage of the ruling PF’s emerging electoral pulling power in Southern Province.
Common-sense suggests common-sense suggests that the type of reaction the UPND president was going to get from the Monze Central constituents would be unpredictable and possibly hostile. But cynics and critics have observed that his party’s politics have long given up being sensible and predictable. Besides, he has also shown self-inflicted traits of being a political dynasty ignoramus. However, common-sense suggests that the type of reaction the UPND president was going to get from the Monze Central constituents would be unpredictable and possibly hostile. But cynics and critics have observed that his party’s politics have long given up being sensible and predictable. Besides, he has also shown self-inflicted traits of being a political dynasty ignoramus. Known and unknown to many, national and intraparty dictatorships, attempted-coups, street protests and rebellions, free-and-fair elections and even Cambridge Analytica’s deployed third-party persuasion techniques – Zambia has seen it all. But as Zambians go to the presidential, parliamentary and local government legislative polls in August this year, another worrying ingredient has been added to the mix. It is what some observers are calling “founder’s hereditary dynasty syndrome”. This is not being segregationist by
suggesting that those standing for office must be hereditary-linked to the founder’s family. Rather, the term refers to a ‘disease’ whereby the sufferer feels that by virtue of being a family member to the originator of a party, he or she has absolute authority on all matters concerning that party. From the outset let us be realistic. Following the turbulent years after independence, Zambia is now enjoying a marked improvement in the area of governance. The country has certainly turned over a page on the former-first President Kenneth Kaunda’s dictatorship which began to unravel in 1991 after the elections that saw voters reject his one-party state. Yet a hangover of former-first President’s politics, this so-called “founder’s hereditary dynasty syndrome”, still threatens the country’s political establishment dominated by three major parties; the ruling PF, the UPND and the MMD. It is at the intra-party level that this subtle brand of dictatorship is particularly evident, as shown by the primary processes for the adoption of parliamentary and local government candidates for the August elections that were fraught with irregularities. What these suggest is that the party founders together with their hereditary family members have an unrestrained hand in calling the shots, while at the same time party lieutenants ensured orders were obeyed. However, under the rule of the PF the country has more or less successfully navigated the sometimes turbulent waters of the past 10 years. It has brought press freedom, largely maintained human rights, fostered child development, supported the advancement of women and youths, and managed a peaceful co-existence of its different tribes and cultures. But recently the euphoria has started to wane. Perhaps most tellingly, the ‘songs of the old’ no longer thrill the millennial generation, who will be casting their ballots for the first time. For them, the most important issue will not be who fought alongside whom and for which side during the one party-state, but who will fight a battle on their behalf for economic prosperity and social uplifting. Thus the millennial generation is hungry for jobs, houses, access to health facilities, education for their children and social security when they retire. These are promises previous governments have had difficulty fulfilling.

HE Zambia Police has been given a 14 day ultimatum to make sure the abducted Hatembo siblings are found and reunited with their family. If they fail, a march to state house to meet President Lungu will be mobilised because the disappearance of individuals was too serious a matter to be swept under the carpet. Democracy and Motherland Defenders coalition (DMDC) has also appealed to the Church Mother bodies to dedicate a day of prayer and fasting for the release of the abducted Hatembo
siblings . Coalition chairperson Andrew Ntewewe says that the Inspector General of Police and the commissioner of Police in Southern Province must do more and ensure the abducted Hatembos are freed. building his church. He said the project will create employment for congregants and people around Balastone area. Mr Lungu noted that his government attaches great importance to infrastructure development as can be seen on the many new infrastructure across the country. He said his government has firm belief that there can be no meaningful development without creating a strong infrastructure base in the country. He expressed delight that the church has embarked on the project as it is in line with the Patriotic Front vision of infrastructure development. Stop abusing court process - AFRINET By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA THE Inter-Africa Governance Network (AFRINET) has urged stakeholders to restrain against commencing any court action in relation to President Edgar Lungu’s eligibility for 2021 elections as doing so is not only duplicity of the court process but also abuse. AFRINET said the stakeholders should accept the Constitutional Court ruling over the matter because it has pronounced itself on two separate occasions which is in 2018 in the matter between Dr Danny Pule and others vs the Attorney General and also last Wednesday’s ruling in the case of Bampi Kapalasa and another vs Attorney General. In a comprehensive state-
ment, AFRINET executive director Maurice Malambo said it was time the issue of President Lungu’s eligibility came to a close and stakeholders shifted attention to politics of purpose and civility in the forthcoming General Election. “The debate whether President Edgar Lungu qualifies or not to contest the 2021 General Election has on two separate occasions been correctly pronounced on by the Constitutional Court, exercising rightful, original and final jurisdiction,” the organisaiton said. “We further urge stakeholders to withdraw if there be any action before any court or exercise restraint against commencing any court action incidental to this matter because doing so is not only duplicity of the court process but also its abuse,” he said.

EXPECT MORE DEFECTIONS, SAYS CIVIL RIGHTS ACTVIST
By JULIET MAKWAMA
C
IVIL Rights Activist Wesley Miyanda has charged that political parties will soon experience more defections from members who are not happy with the way adoptions are being handled. Mr Miyanda said yesterday, soon the battle will be uphill for most parties citing that this year's general elections will be very crucial. He says one of the challenges faced by many political leaders has to do with the adoption process, which he says has been mainly characterized by a number of negative factors such as favouritism and bribery.
“However, I'm deeply disheartened by the fact that certain individuals are appearing in the last minute, flexing or making use of their financial muscles by fishing out money and other items for them to be adopted. This trend
has triggered a lot panic and confusion among a number of party members, some of who have vowed to ditch their parties or not to participate in voting,” Mr Miyanda said. He says the political scene will
end up witnessing a lot of defections from one party to the other if this trend which he has termed as ugly continued. He says genuine and loyal members of different political parties capable and ready to deliver services in their respective wards will shun their parties once they realise those with money have been picked for respective elective positions. Mr Miyanda has charged that some aspiring candidates have been mobilising for their parties, proving their loyalty with or without any external financial support while others have come to flash money at the last minute for them to be adopted. Mr Miyanda says this trend has triggered a lot panic and confusion among a number of party members, some of who have vowed to ditch their parties or not to participate in voting.

Tobacco industry frustrating control Bill enactment By OLIVER SAMBOKO THE Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has accused players in the tobacco industry of using influential individuals to fight the Tobacco and Nicotine Control Bill before consideration in Parliament. ZACA Executive Secretary, Juba Sakala, observed with concern the tactics in tobacco industry whereby players were using high profile people to discredit the Bill of 2018. He said the Bill before parliament should be supported by all Zambians because it seeks to protect the lives of people, both smokers and non-smokers. "As we all know the bill is there to save lives of people who consume tobacco in whatever form," he said. He said once the Bill is passed into law, the country will benefit as it will not only save lives but also serve Government money used to procure drugs for treatment of tobacco related diseases. Mr Sakala said it was disappointing that the tobacco industry was using tactics to delay the process of enacting the Bill. He said ZACA was aware of manoeuvres by the industry to distract the Government policy on its quest to regulate tobacco consumption. Mr Sakala wondered why organisations like the Zambia Federation of Employers (ZFE) were opposing the enactment of the Bill when the same Bill has already passed through several stages including extensive consultation of all the concerned stakeholders.

Mufulira amputee gets land By SANFROSSA MANYINDA GOVERNMENT has delivered 10.1 hectors of land to Disquence Mwaka, a Mufulira man who became disabled eight years ago when he was hit by a speeding vehicle which left him with both of his hands amputated and the right part of his face including his ear grazed off. Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Jean Kapata in the company of Mufulira District Commissioner Mr Mike Manda delivered the land title to Mr Mwaka and his wife on behalf of the President. Ms Kapata urged the differently abled across the country to endeavor to acquire pieces of land and get into farming. She said this would help sustain themselves and their families. "My ministry is ready to give land to any Zambian who applies and meets the requirements without any form of discrimination. An example here is Mr Mwaka here who has been given adequate land to do his farming at a large scale," she said. And in response, Mr Mwaka expressed gratitude to President Lungu for the land that was given to him. Mr Mwaka said the land, which he described as life changing would go a long way in ensuring that lives of his family members were changed for the better. Mr Mwaka started farming on a small portion of land using his legs after the accident to till the land. With that he has been able to feed and take care of his wife and children. This caught the eye of President Lungu who immediately instructed the Minister of Lands to provide Mr Mwaka with adequate land.

Man locks family in, petrol bombs house BY PATRICK CHITUMBA A 42-YEAR-OLD Gweru man allegedly locked his wife, his three-year-old daughter, two stepsons and three relatives in their house before petrol-bombing the bedroom in a foiled bid to burn them following a domestic dispute. ISHECK Nyandoro, has fathered 151 children with 16 wives and he is still counting. “Mine is a project. This polygamy is a project that I have undertaken since 1983 and will end with my death. Whenever that day death visits, is when I will stop marrying and fathering children. “I am planning on taking in my 17th wife this winter and the formalities are already being worked on. I will tell you when she comes in,’’ he says in a very relaxed but confident manner. From his conundrum, 50 children are still in school in Mbire, Harare, Mutare and Guruve and little everywhere else, six are employed by the Zimbabwe National Army, two by police and 11 others are employed in different professions. He has married off 13 daughters. Two wives are pregnant. At least 23 of his sons are married, one of which is distantly following his father’s footsteps, on a count of four wives. The project, he claims, has started working and his children pamper him with gifts daily. “From my working children and getting pampered with money through EcoCash, almost daily and 11 of my children have put me on funeral policy. Darlington Miti (42) who is said to be suicidal, fled after bombing the family’s house in Heritage Park in Gweru early Thursday morning but has since handed himself over to the police. The family’s neighbours quickly responded to the distress calls and managed to put out the fire before it spread to
other rooms. The other property burnt besides the car, includes a bed, blankets and clothes all with a combined value of US$8 000.Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident. He said all the family members escaped unhurt. “Police are investigating an attempted murder case where a 42-year-old man set on fire a
house in which seven people, including his wife, were sleeping following a domestic dispute. The incident occurred on Thursday at about 2am at the family house in Heritage Park suburb,” said Insp Mahoko. He said Miti was now in police custody after surrendering himself to the police. Day after day, Nyandoro sits in his centrally located shed, eating meals, one by one, his wives bringing food for him. That is a good 16 meals! “Every wife cooks her best everyday because the rule is I only eat what is delicious and I throw away what is not tasty. Every wife subscribes to that rule and does not get annoyed when I return her badly cooked food to her. It is the rule here. Rejected food should make her cook better next time,’’ he explains. jugal rights and by his own admission, when planning the roster, he takes into consideration many factors. No wife knows she is on duty until he visits her bedroom.
“I married my first wife in 1983 and she is still here. I last married 2015 and stopped temporarily because the economy had become unfriendly. The New Dispensation has slowly fixed things and am getting a new one this June, she is currently in Harare and I have started the process. Had it not been for temporary economic hardships, the story would have been different, maybe getting close to 30 wives by now and 200 plus children. “Now that the economy has stabilised, if you come back next year you will find two or three more new wives
and several children, added to the number. But in the past six years, I have fathered 22 children. I am not stopping,” brags Mr Nyandoro. “I am strong and feel as strong as I was when I was 18. I give conjugal rights to an average of four wives a night and I do the duty roaster personally. I go to the targeted bedrooms one by one. That is my job. There is no other job I do. They are all catered for and you can see they are happy. Afternoon conjugal rights are not considered during the duty roster, for, that is mainly accidental. - NEHANDA
Man assaults wife for not singing at funeral BY JUDGE JARACHARA
Lucas Mhlanga
A MAN from Mzilikazi suburb has been fined $5 000 for assaulting his wife for not singing at a funeral. Lucas Mhlanga (39) of Mzilikazi suburb pleaded guilty to assault charges when he appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Mrs Nomagugu Maphosa on Monday. Appearing for the State, Mr Owen Mugari said Mhlanga, a barber and his wife Ms Sikhulekile Moyo (40) were coming from a funeral in the same
suburb on Sunday evening when he asked her why she was not singing at the funeral. Mhlanga then assaulted his wife as punishment for not singing. It was not stated who had died. Ms Moyo who did not suffer any injuries reported the matter to the police resulting in Mhlanga’s arrest. The woman brought an affidavit to court intending to withdraw the matter saying she had forgiven him as Mhlanga had promised not to assault her again.“I have forgiven my husband because he prom-
ised not to do it again and because he is the father of my only child who is a minor,” said Ms Moyo. Mhlanga who blamed alcohol for his actions pleaded for the court to be lenient and promised not to assault her again as he now knows it is a serious offence. “I am sorry to my wife and to the Honourable court. I acted under the influence of alcohol and I did not know that punishing my wife is an offence. Now that I know, I shall never do it again,” said Mhlanga.
The magistrate Mrs Maphosa said the court considers the fact that the complainant had rendered an affidavit intending to withdraw the case and that she was the accused person’s wife and the couple has a child who is a minor. The magistrate said sending Mhlanga to jail would disturb the child whose upkeep is based on the accused person’s earnings as he was the breadwinner. Mrs Maphosa ordered Mhlanga to pay $5 000 by May 30 or spend 60 days in prison. THE CHRONICLE
Woman exchanges wedding vows with dead man
The vow “until death do us apart” does not exist in her vocabulary. Jessica Padgett, a woman in the US decided to exchange wedding vows with her dead groom at his grave. The groom, Kendall Murphy (27), was tragically killed in a car accident nine months before the wedding. Kendall was a volunteer firefighter from Montgomery, Indiana and had responded to a crash on a rural road. His colleague, Colby Blake (26) was driving another fire engine and responding to the same emergency. Just as Kendall was reaching in to his vehicle to get his protective clothing, he was hit by the fire engine Blake was driving and killed. “I wanted to still celebrate our wedding day, even though he wasn’t physically there with me. I wanted memories of the day that we were supposed to have in my dress,” Jessica, 25, told the BBC. But she decided not to cancel the big day. Instead, on 29 September, Jessica put on the white dress she’d chosen for their wedding and she gathered family and friends.- MALAWI24

From cooking as a hobby to running online food outlet
V
ANESSA Bwibo, 25, studied economics and statistics at the University of Nairobi, then got a job in finance but resigned after four months to start her own company – Bwibo Dishes – after gaining an audience on Twitter and leveraging the social media platform to get orders. What started as a homebased food business has now grown to include Bwibo Sauces and Bwibo Juice. “I started cooking and sharing the process on social media as a hobby while looking for another job. I would share my own recipes and encourage people to try following them in their own homes. The feedback was good,” she says. “ At one point, a neighbour ordered a meal they had seen me make online, then shared with another and one thing led to another.”
“I had budgeted for five clients on my first day, and 45 people ended up ordering! If I didn’t give up on that day, I don’t think I will ever give up on myself and this business because everything went left on day one. I didn’t know how to cook for even nine people, and now I had to manage 45 orders. Cooking for a big group was overwhelming, and that day was very chaotic. I almost quit, but my mum talked me through it,” she says. That first tweet has since been liked by 2,700
dishes ordered from her pages and even tag her. This ensures that she’s getting referred to anyone who follows the said clients, and this has proved to be a priceless marketing strategy. A lot of people started home-based food businesses to make money during the first lockdown in 2020, but Bwibo Dishes had been operating long before that. Still, it was in that period that the business really grew. “I completely changed my business strategy at the beginning of 2020

that began with a vague dream. Through this dream, I have found my role in life. I have since realised that this is God-given talent. I’m driven by wanting to bring people together to share and enjoy my meals. I love interacting with my clients and it goes beyond business. I believe that you can spread love through food, and the satisfaction you get by making someone happy is unmatched.” This wasn’t her first foray into business, as she started off selling popcorn in her neighbourhood, mostly to kids leaving school in the afternoon. To start Bwibo Dishes, she used some of the profit from her business, as well as capital from her parents who had been supportive. Her total start up cost was Sh20,000.
What you need to know: • At first Vanessa Bwibo, 25, only knew how to cook tea, today she owns an online food business through which she sells dishes, sauces and juices. • She started a purely online business using social media as her main form of marketing. “I would not have been here if it wasn’t for Twitter and Instagram.” • My degree helps when it comes to financing and budgeting ... glad to know it didn’t go to waste
“Running an online food delivery service has its challenges, like food getting to the client when cold because of the travel distance and getting a trustworthy rider. With food, everyone has their preferences and opinions and it’s therefore very hard to please everyone – you learn to deal with the inevitable negative criticism. Dealing with the government if you’re trying to expand is another challenge and can be expensive as well. My degree helps when it comes to financing and budgeting ... glad to know it didn’t go to waste.” For any young women looking to venture into the food business, she advises, “Just do it. It seems like simple advise, but looking back, there is no formula to this business or any other one for that matter. If you have fear and doubt, yes things happen along the way, but that’s how you learn. I would really encourage you to “just do it”. It doesn’t matter what’s going on around you... if you strongly believe in who you are and in your potential, go ahead and chase those dreams.”NATION, Kenya wendywatta@gmail.com Feedback to the editor: satmag@ke.nationmedia.com

Livingstone’s First Ever Bike Festival BY MIRRIAM NASILELE
A
PART from easter being a Christian holiday centered around rest and reflection, it is also a good time for organizing crowd-drawing events. Excitingly, the city of Livingstone recently hosted one such event in the form of the first ever Zambia Bike Festival to promote conservation of nature and wildlife. Thorn Tree Safaris took advantage of the easter long weekend to organize a four-day event open to all Zambians, Zimbabweans, and Batswana and to attract some of the many visitors drawn to the city. The first ever Zambia Bike Festival is a celebration of cyclists and nature. This four-day event was created to promote Livingstone as an adrenaline and tourist capital and to engage the community in discussions about many of the environmental problems the town is facing, particularly emphasizing the need to keep Livingstone clean and green. The event was centered around four unique bicycle races that attracted 60 cyclists. Each race took place on a separate day and was tied to tackling a specific environmental issue experienced in Livingstone. The bike festival chose to use bicycles because they are a clean, efficient, and environmentally friendly mode of transport. Also, cycling provides an opportunity to see beautiful sights and interact with the environ-
ment. Day one: the ‘Mosi-oa-tunya tour of Livingstone town. An upclose tour of the city raising awareness about the festival. Day two: ‘Thundering Gorges’. Livingstone has over the years lost its trees
to illegal logging and charcoal production and this has not only contributed to deforestation, but it has also contributed to devastating consequences on tourism, an industry that entirely survives on nature. In the words of Benjamin Mibenge, a naturalist who has lived
part of his life planting trees all over Livingstone and was a participant at the event, ‘the indiscriminate cutting down of trees in the country will lead to increased emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, accelerate climate change, worsen soil
erosion, and cause several other environmental problems on people and wildlife.’ This is one of the reasons why this theme was observed, to educate Livingstone residents about the importance of trees to Livingstone. This race day ended with participants planting trees
within the town. Day three: Zambezi Tri-nation Cycle Challenge. This day focused on wildlife conservation. Mosi-oa-tunya national park is facing serious challenges of poaching using wire snares, which are a silent and unselec-
tive killing method. The purpose of this race was to sensitize people about the dangers caused by snaring and to show residents the social and economic benefits of conserving wildlife. Day four: ‘Mukuni Dash’. A race to recycle. Among other efforts to
make the town clean and tourist friendly, recycling
companies are making sure the waste generated is being reduced by turning waste into artifacts and ornaments that can be reused. This has also contributed to reducing pollution. The Zambezi Tri-nation Cycle Challenge was the
main event of the Zambia Bike Festival, focused on wildlife conservation. The race, which began as a casual tour from Zambia, through Zimbabwe, and Botswana covered a total of 160 kilometers. The Zambia Bike Festival is a creative and innovative initiative to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our environment and wildlife. A brilliant sign of community action, the event provided a platform for cyclists from Livingstone and neighboring countries to learn about the environmental challenges Zambia faces and to engage in dialogue about how we can work together towards solving the problems. Together we can make a difference in our cities and countries.

Dear Editor,
of a programme that was deemed tribal. My own feelings are that truth hurts. We all know the voting pattern in the UPND strongholds, especially in Southern Province. The voting is so regional and so tribal that no amount of masking it can hide it. Let us call a spade a spade. The tribal vote that comes from Southern Province is well documented and anyone is free to go to the Electoral Commission of Zambia and check on the results of the last two elections. I think it was wrong to

LANGUAGE BARRIER KEEPS CONGOLESE IN REMAND By MULENGA MUSONDA
T
HE 41 years old Congolese Businessman who entered Zambia illegally to sell silver and aquamarine minerals has continued to languish in remand custody following the struggle by the court to secure a Swahili interpreter. Gyan Allen Kasongo appeared before Magistrate Muyambango Munukayumbwa earlier on March 15, 2021 charged with two counts; Illegal Entry into Zambia and Unlawful Stay in the Country has continued to remain in
custody due to the lack of an interpreter for his trial to commence. Allegations in the first count are that Kasongo being a Congolese national entered Zambia through Mokambo Border Control without passing through the immigration office. In count two, Kasongo is charged with unlawful stay in the country. This is after he entered Zambia illegally and failed to formalise his stay with the department of Immigration and Deportations. The alleged incidents are said to have occurred between February 1, and March
5, 2021 in Choma district where he was apprehended from. Kasongo has denied both charges and insists that he has valid documents that are still in the custody of the authorities. When his matter came up for commencement of trial before Court, hearing could not take off as there was no interpreter to translate in Swahili, but the Court promised that on the next date a translator will be available. The matter was adjourned to May 17, 2021 for trial. Kasongo was remanded in custody.

Serial thief to get life skill in 36 months prison term By MULENGA MUSONDA A 36 years old man will toil for 60 months in jail working from sun up till sun down after the Choma Magistrates Court convicted him for stealing an Ox valued at K5, 000. In this matter, Julius Mbewe stood charged with one count of Stock Theft contrary to the Laws of Zambia. Particulars of the offence are that Mbewe and 3 others known stole an Ox valued at K5, 000 the property of Newman Farms. The theft happened on March 27 in Choma District of Southern Province. When the matter came up for judgment before Court,
Resident Magistrate Salie Kanunka after analysing the evidence adduced before her from three witnesses established that the accused person was part of the Cartel that stole the animal. The court went on to establish that the accused person decided to ferry the animal nicodemusly at night because he knew that it was stolen. She thus found him guilty and sentenced him to 60 months imprisonment with hard labour with effect from April 1, 2021. Mbewe was informed of his right to appeal to the High Court within 14 days if he was not happy with the ruling.

By MULENGA MUSONDA A 20 years old youth will not only work tirelessly in the Prison Gardens, he will also acquire a skill of choice in the three years period that he will remain incarcerated. Frank Zimba, who the members of the public may term a ‘misfit’ to society for breaking into people’s house’s has been accorded an opportunity by the Choma Magistrates Court to transform his life by coming out of Prison with skills that will help him contribute meaningfully to the country. In this matter Frank Zimba who was joint-
ly charged with Gracia Mukuka stood charged with Housebreaking and Theft contrary to the Laws of Zambia. Particulars of the offence are that on April 24, in Choma, the two broke into Chimwemwe Kabwe’s house and stole 1 Television Set, Control Boxes, 1 Radio, 1 Laptop among other valuables valued at K25, 000 the property of the named Kabwe. When the matter came up for plea before Senior Resident Magistrate Peter Mungala, Mukuka vehemently denied the allegation whilst his co accused Zimba without hesitation admitted to breaking into the complainant’s house.
In accordance with the facts stated by Public Prosecutor Ebby Kahale, Zimba was apprehended after the police received intelligence information that he was seen offloading household goods at his home during odd hours. A Television worth k15, 000 and a Radio Cassette were recovered while other properties could not be located. Despite Zimba pleading that he regretted his action and should not be given a custodial sentence, Magistrate Mungala sent him to Prison for 3 years with hard labour so he can reform and be a better citizen.
This was in a matter in which Sylvester Soonde appeared before Court charged with Theft contrary to section 272 of the Penal code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia. Allegations are that Soonde stole K1, 400 from Miriam Chansa. Sudan takes step towards debt relief with IMF review
World 7
THE International Monetary Fund said on Friday it had reached a staff-level agreement with Sudan on completion of the second and final review under its staff-monitored programme, in a step towards debt relief. A strong performance under the year-long IMF economic reform programme is a requirement for Sudan to reach the "decision point" for debt relief under the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) process. Sudan is expected to reach that point in June. "Despite very challenging conditions which are exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sudanese authorities continue to make sustained progress on their ambitious reform agenda," said Carol Baker, head of the IMF mission. The staff-level agreement is still subject to approval by IMF management. Sudanese Finance Minister
Jibril Ibrahim said clearing the second review paved the way for Sudan to be approved for HIPC debt relief “which will hopefully result in a substantial debt relief ... as well as new credit lines”. Sudan is seeking to clear at least $50 billion in debt, mostly with bilateral creditors. Later this month, France is hosting a conference to promote investment and debt relief for Sudan. The country has recently secured bridge loans from donors to clear arrears on debt with the World Bank and the African Development Bank. A French diplomat indicated last month that France could provide funding for Sudan to also clear arrears with the IMF and proceed with HIPC. Sudan is emerging from decades of economic isolation and sanctions under former leader Omar al-Bashir, who was toppled in 2019 after mass protests triggered by an economic crisis. - Reuters
Blasts targeting Afghan school in Kabul kill 40, injures dozens Kabul - Multiple blasts at a school in the Afghan capital Kabul on Saturday killed at least 40 people and wounded dozens more, mostly female students, officials said. A senior interior ministry official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that most of the casualties were students coming out of the Sayed ul Shuhada school. Footage on TV channel ToloNews showed chaotic scenes outside the school, with books and school bags strewn across a bloodstained road, and residents rushing to help victims. A spokesman for the interior ministry, Tariq Arian, put the death toll at least 25 but did not specify the cause or the target. Ghulam Dastagir Nazari, spokesman for the health ministry, said 46 people had been taken to hospitals so far. Kabul is on high alert since Washington announced plans last month to pull out all U.S. troops by September 11, with Afghan officials saying the Taliban have stepped up attacks across the country. No group has claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied the insurgent group’s involvement and condemned the incident.
The explosions took place in western Kabul, a heavily Shi’ite Muslim neighbourhood that has frequently been attacked by Islamic State militants over the years. The school is a joint high school for girls and boys, who study in three shifts, the second of which is for female students, Najiba Arian, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Education, told Reuters. “The horrendous attack in Dasht-i Barchi area in Kabul, is a despicable act of terrorism,” the European Union’s mission in Afghanistan said on Twitter. “Targeting primarily students in a girls’ school, makes this an attack on the future of Afghanistan.”

leadership contest next year. Magashule has been charged with corruption over
a contract to audit homes with asbestos roofs when he was premier of the Free
State province. He has denied wrongdoing, calling the charges flimsy and fabricated in an interview with SABC. "The ANC is acting in an unfair manner ... I have not committed any crime," Magashule told the state broadcaster, repeating his determination to stay in post. Magashule said a resolution by the ANC's national executive at the end of March related to members charged with corruption or other serious crimes had been designed to remove him. He was suspended after failing to step aside within 30 days. The “step aside” rule will test Ramaphosa’s control over the ANC and his commitment to tackling corruption. The rule is on the agenda of a three-day virtual meeting of the national executive that starts on Saturday. Magashule said he would attend. - Reuters
Tanzania’s president wears her face mask at home At least 163 Palestinians and six Israeli police officers were hurt in Jerusalem, emergency services and police said
Al-Aqsa mosque: Dozens hurt in Jerusalem clashes AT least 163 Palestinians and six Israeli police officers have been hurt in clashes in Jerusalem, Palestinian medics and Israeli police say. Most were injured at the Al-Aqsa mosque, where Israeli police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades as Palestinians threw stones and bottles. Tensions have been rising over the potential eviction of Palestinians from land claimed by Jewish settlers. The Red Crescent has opened a field hospital to treat the wounded. The Al-Aqsa mosque complex in Jerusalem's Old City is one of Islam's
most revered locations, but its location is also the holiest site in Judaism, known as the Temple Mount. The site is a frequent flashpoint for violence, which unfolded again on Friday night after thousands had gathered there to observe the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Israeli police said they had used force to "restore order" due to the "rioting of thousands of worshippers" after evening prayers. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, meanwhile, said he “held [Israel] responsible for the dangerous
developments and sinful attacks”. An Aqsa official called for calm over the mosque’s loudspeakers. “Police must immediately stop firing stun grenades at worshippers, and the youth must calm down and be quiet!”, Reuters news agency quoted them as saying. The Palestinian Red Crescent emergency service said 88 of the injured Palestinians were taken to hospital after they were hit with rubber-coated metal bullets. Police said some of the six officers injured needed medical treatment. - BBC
TANZANIA’S President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appeared for the first time at a public event in the East African nation wearing a face mask. Her predecessor, John Magufuli who died in March - had always refused to wear one, and was considered a coronavirus sceptic. Ms Samia has worn face masks outside of Tanzania - most notably this week on her two-day state visit to neighbouring Kenya. At the event in Dar es Salaam on Friday, she was addressing an audience of more than 800 elders from across the country. “We apologise, our lifestyle has changed, we have come here today in face masks and this is because the elderly are at a higher risk of contracting this disease, so we have to protect them,” the president said. Since coming to power, the 61-yearold has not been afraid to show that she is prepared to take a different and more considered path than Mr Magufuli. She has formed a committee of experts to advise her on the status of Covid-19 in the country and the necessary steps to take to keep people safe. During her visit to Kenya she made a light-hearted comment about mask wearing - comparing it a herder muzzling a goat to stop it eating crops. - BBC

ZESCO UNSTOPPABLE Zesco platers celebrating
…Ndola giants beat Nkwazi to get tenth consecutive win By MICHAEL MIYOBA
RUNAWAY MTN Super League Leaders Zesco United stretched their winning streak to ten straight wins after humbling Nkwazi 2-1 in a Week-29 fixture played yesterday at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka. First and second half goals from Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba and Kasoma Luwawa gifted Numba Mumamba’s charges who propelled to 55 points on the Summit of the Super League table. Kampamba broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when the ball came off the cross bar before going in after numerous attempts which went begging from both teams. Luwawa had to wait until the 82nd minute to double Zesco’s advantage with a beautiful curling shot which hit the upright before crossing the goal line. IT is a shame that boxers who are scheduled to represent the country at the Olympic Games in Tokyo Japan haven’t www.dailynation.info had adequate preparaeditor@ tions for the games which will attract the best boxers in the world, Oriental Quaries Boxing promotion manager Chris Malunga has said. Speaking when he featured on a Millennium Radio Sports program, Malunga said there is need to send the three boxers who qualified for the Olympic Games abroad for them to have the international exposure needed to compete fairly in Japan. Malunga challenged the Zambia National Boxing to emulate the Football Association of Zambia which has set up a committee tasked to raise resources for the Copper Queens who also qualified for the Olympic games. He said there is need for ZBF to be proactive and come up with ideas to raise funds for the three boxers who must compete in international competitions to keep their form. Malunga said local boxers are not able to give the Olympic bound boxers the competition needed to prepare adequately for the Olympic Games. Zambian boxers Everest Mulenga, Patrick Chinyemba and Stephen Zimba had been in fine form pounding all their opponents to achieve Olympic qualification. The Olympic Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 8, 2021 in Japan.
ture at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in January had to wait for injury time to score a consolation goal through Christopher Zulu. However, it was not enough to stop the Ndola giants who reigned supreme to move to 55 points on the Super Division table. Meanwhile in the second fixture of the double header at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka, Zanaco came from a goal down to beat Kabwe Warriors 2-1 thanks to Lasa Kiala and Moses Phiri’s goals. Sheban Kaunda had given Warriors the lead just 15 minutes after kick off while, Kiala redeemed Zanaco with a 37 minute goal as the two sides went on break with an equal chance of bagging maximum three points. Zanaco came back stronger and were able to find the lead through Phiri who beat Goal Keeper Lameck Siame with a beautiful left footed strike to gift the Bankers maximum three points.
The win propelled Zanaco to 45 points, ten points behind the runaway league leaders Zesco United who dominate the league despite having played four games less in the league. Meanwhile, Forest Rangers failed to redeem themselves from two consecutive defeats to Zanaco and Green Buffaloes by holding struggling Kitwe United 1-1 at Garden Park Stadium in Kitwe.
