CHURCH’S CHALLENGE WITH the August 12 Presidential and General elections on the horizon, the country needs a non-partisan and all-embracing cadre of Zambians to unite the nation. This is even more so as nerves are likely to be at stretching point among the various political contenders. Moreover, the statements or signs that have been made by some political entities suggest that they are prepared to go to extremes in their bid to win the elections. This is where we believe the Church must step in and make its presence felt as a moral authority and ensure that Zambians do not forget that they are one people. But the Church can only be that moral authority when it is non-partisan and treat all political competitors as God’s children. Sadly though, there are clerics in the country who have openly taken sides and are busy championing the aspirations of some political parties. This is the more reason why even President Edgar Lungu says it is difficult to distinguish some church leaders from political leaders because they behave like they run political parties. President Lungu said it was worrying that some church leaders are becoming political instead of being neutral, promoting unity and providing spiritual guidance. In what many fear could be a fractious campaign period before the August 12 polls, the Church should be aware that it has its work cut out – that of calming the heated political climate. Mr Lungu said yesterday in Kitwe during the launch of the 2020-25 Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) world-wide strategic plan that a trend by some church leaders of taking a partisan stance in the country was worrying. Though there is nothing wrong with the Church commenting on national affairs, it becomes a problem when they appear on political platforms and pretend that they are nonpartisan. We too agree with President Lungu for commending the SDA for keeping its lane of preaching the word of God, remaining true to the bible teachings and callings. "Some church leaders in the country behave like they run political parties. It is difficult to distinguish them from political parties, but it is good that SDA leaders have continued with their neutral stance,” President Lungu said. The danger of Church leaders being partisan is what for example worsened the genocide in Rwanda during the mid-90s when thousands of Tutsis were butchered by the Hutus. Pope Francis is on record as having apologised for the role played by the Catholic Church in Rwanda during which some of its priests turned a blind eye to the killings. For Zambians, their prayers are that the Church and its leadership will play a unifying role and ensure that the country emerges unscathed after August 12. And with President Lungu and UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema both expressing their willingness to dialogue, it remains for the Church to be the arbitrator. But that can only come about when the Church proves that it is a neutral body that embraces all across the political divide.

ZAMBIA POLICE IN WHODUNNIT BLAME GAME Yet, information has emerged that unidentified armed “thugs” in a white Toyota Hilux fired at innocent citizens during the fracas

By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE

T

HE Zambian Police Service has been widely condemned for using brutal tactics to control daringly-unruly political hooligans in the country because of the recent execution-style killing of two innocent citizens. Yet, information has emerged that unidentified armed “thugs” in a white Toyota Hilux fired at innocent citizens during the fracas where a state prosecutor and a UPND cadre were killed in cold blood near National Prosecution Authority (NPA) offices when UPND president Hakainde Hichilema was being questioned at Police headquarters. The suspected vehicle reportedly sped off swiftly towards Cabinet Office after shooting at people near the NPA offices, where the victims were found dead at a nearby restaurant. The two were shot dead in unknown circumstances as the police fought running battles with hundreds of UPND cadres who had mobilised themselves around the Police headquarters. Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja confirmed the shooting of the two and that the circumstances leading to their killing were still unknown. He stated that investigations into the shooting incident had been instituted to establish the circumstances in which the two were shot. He also confirmed that the UPND leader was warned and cautioned for the offence of conspiracy to defraud. Besides ascertaining the type of firearm used to shoot the two victims, it is unclear whether forensic examinations included part of video clips that had gone viral on social media or CCTV footages from surrounding buildings closer to the crime scene.

FIREARM Besides ascertaining the type of firearm used to shoot the two victims, it is unclear whether forensic examinations included part of video clips that had gone viral on social media or CCTV footages from surrounding buildings closer to the crime scene. As expected, UPND’s hoodwinking rabble-rousers and their allied-NGOs/backers became hypercritical of the police to vociferously deflect the public outrage the double-killing had caused, from themselves onto the police. They shamelessly went into overdrive to dent the Government’s image to the international community using social media propaganda. They also thought forensic examinations instituted by the

police, as out to undermine the UPND leader’s political career, and viewed his indictment, for the offence of conspiracy to defraud as a scheme influenced by the ruling party. Consequently, President Edgar Lungu dropped Deputy Inspector-Generals Bonny Kapeso and Eugene Sibote. He had since appointed Copperbelt Province Commissioner of Police, Charity Katanga as the new Deputy IG in charge of Operations. He also appointed Northern Province Commissioner of Police Richard Mweene as the new Deputy IG for Administration. Several Senior Assistant Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners were also promoted. The President also reshuffled some Provincial Commissioners. Lastly, he requested the Police command to come up with a speedy inquiry whilst receiving a preliminary report on the killing incident. All this puts Mr Kanganja in an interesting position as he was given a six-month ultimatum in which to reorganise the Service. Unlike most public safety authorities such as the aviation industry that has been praised for its excellent safety record, there are few winners from the blame game in policing: how do the police learn from mistakes? Who is to blame? When something goes wrong in policing, sometimes tragically and occasionally disastrously so, this is understandably many people’s first reaction. But this search for individual faults and accountability can undermine another important objective: if we are to decrease the chances of mistakes happening again, we need people to be honest about error. How do the police learn from mistakes? Policing as a whole will only do so if people know they can be open about what had happened without fear of being vociferously turned into an item of public scorn. While in aviation, this has been directly attributed to the

fact that if an incident occurs, including a “near miss,” there is a “no blame” investigation, in which all those involved can come forward and explain what happened without the fear of sanction. The underlying philosophy here is that most faults are the result of systemic or organisational failure rather than individual misconduct and so the most important thing to do is to identify the reasons why

Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja confirmed the shooting of the two and that the circumstances leading to their killing were still unknown.

something happened and make adjustments to improve future performance. Overtime this creates a culture of continuous improvement. Admittedly, this is very far from the situation in policing. In policing where an operation or interaction results in complaint or harm there is a default focus on the culpability and accountability of the individual officer. This is the legacy of some serious ethical failures and abuse of powers in the past. But

surely we have to start from the position that the overwhelming majority of police officers are trying to do the right thing, but often having to make quick decisions in sub-optimal operating environments. But is it possible to transfer the kind of learning culture we see in the aviation industry to policing? There are a number of important differences: the powers that the police have require a degree of regulation and public accountability that is not necessary in other sectors; policing inherently involves conflict, meaning that very often there will be a confrontational relationship with a complainant. The fact that in the aviation industry people can be open internally but shielded from external accountability, rests on a considerable degree of trust that just doesn’t exist in policing; there are aspects of police culture that militate against a learning culture: it’s a service operating within a wider legal and criminal justice system set up to apportion individual blame; there is a strong sense of internal solidarity between police officers, important for sustaining trust and morale during difficult and dangerous work, but which can lead to a tendency to “stick together” when outsiders are looking for blame; and there is a hierarchical management culture that discourages people from “speaking truth to power.” We may find that the public would be happy with more of a focus on organisational, as opposed to individual, accountability if that is more likely to prevent things from happening again; like all public authorities the Police Service should get better at listening to complainants, developing individual and institutional empathy, and building greater trust. A great deal of the conflict and mistrust is the result of organisations hunkering down, refusing to apologise and not listening to people’s concerns.

Dr Kabalo said authorities at points of entry should ensure that the existing health guidelines are enforced. Residents fear that a Covid-19 explosion is looming in Chirundu as dozens of Zimbabwean economic asylum seekers are flocking into Zambia to avoid hardships back home following their government’s decision to lockdown the country to prevent the spread of the virus. Mr Bernard Banda, a resident of Chirundu has called on the government to stop the influx before the Covid pandemic overwhelms the border town. Mr Banda said with the closure of Beit Bridge by the South African government, most Zimbabweans were turning to Chirundu to gain entry into Zambia for economic survival. Zimbabwe is one of the countries in the SADC region that has been hard hit by Covid-19 and so far recorded 18, 672 confirmed cases with 446 deaths as of January 8, 2021. Following a spike in coronavirus cases, the Zimbabwean government reintroduced a 12-hour curfew from 06 to 18 hours throwing many citizens into untold hardships in a country already suffering from economic meltdown and liquidity crisis. Countries like United States have already placed Zimbabwe under travel restrictions for its citizens.

"I have heard the issues you have presented to management and these have reached us and some will be implemented," he said.

‘Heads must roll over acquisition of faulty medical supplies’ PETER SICHALI

THE Secretary to the Cabinet and law enforcement agencies should act and ensure that those involved in the distribution of faulty medical supplies are held accountable, Zambia Jubilee Coalition Secretary-general Kwaela Mwanza has said. And Mr Mwanza said the distribution of expired and substandard medicine was detrimental to the health of

Zambians and those responsible must be dealt with in line with the law. Mr Mwanza said it was wrong to blame the Minister of Health for distribution of faulty drugs and medical supplies. Mr Mwanza said the politicians make policies and that implementators are the civil servants. Politicians, including the President, rely on civil servants for actualisation of what they want to accomplish for the people. Mr Mwanza wondered why

come from different backgrounds and made money before entering politics. SDA Zambia Northern Union president Samuel Sinyangwe called for an end to political acrimony to maintain peace as the world awaits for the “soon coming Christ.” “The church should remain in the lane of its calling. It is a matter of choice, and some of us, we decided we will be ministers of the word. A number of government ministers like Freedom Sikazwe knows my lineage. "I would have become a chief by now but I decided to become a pastor. So because I am a pastor, I should promote peace and unity. I should not encourage the nation to be divided on partisan

or tribal lines but I should embrace peace,'' Pastor Sinyangwe said Pastor Sinyangwe who quoted Mathew 28:18-20 said the church‘s mission and objective in the next five years would be to preach the word of God through the three angels message to the world.

people are always quick to point fingers at politicians as though they are the ones who mess up the implementation of government programmes. "With good intentions, politicians desired to purchase medical supplies for their citizens and entrusted technocrats who are the experts to implement but they did a shoddy work. There is nowhere where a minister or any politician signs when awarding contracts to supply goods and services to government, so let heads roll,"

Mr Mwanza said. He said it was dissapointing that a ministry that is being run by experienced experts as Permanent Secretaries would end up in a mess. Mr Mwanza said there were a number of regulating bodies under the Ministry of Health that failed the people, because they did not do their job. Mr Mwanza said civil servants must come clean and mention any politician who might have had a hand in all this.

He added, “Allow me to take this opportunity to dispel the rumours that I am in a critical state and requiring oxygen, on the contrary, I am on the mend and I am in very high spirits. I have made good progress and continue to follow all the instructions and guidance.” Dr Matibini commended the healthcare team handling

him for being professional and encouraging. The Speaker who urged Zambians to take preventive measures said he has learnt that the current characteristic of the Covid-19 causing virus was vicious with speedy transmission leading to high numbers of cases and mortalities. Dr Matibini said the control and prevention of Covid-19 required national unity, unity of purpose, concerted effort and collective responsibility.

THE Covid-19 pandemic has claimed the life of former Local Government Deputy Minister, Chrispine Musosha, Minister of Health, Dr Chitalu Chilufya announced in Lusaka yesterday. Mr Musosha, who was also deputy Health Minister in the Rupiah Banda administration was former Member of Parliament for Mansa Central. Meanwhile, Government says the Covid-19 outbreak has continued to accelerate, with over 60 percent of patients in health facilities requiring oxygen therapy and advanced medication. Dr Chilifya said in a statement that the country was also recording increasing number of persons dying in the community or brought in too late to the health facilities. He said that the current disease pattern indicates

speedy transmission of Covid-19 virus and quick progression of disease in especially persons with underlining conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and immune compromised conditions. Dr Chilufya warned that the success in combating Covid-19 remains in the hands of individuals and communities. Meanwhile, the minister announced that the country has recorded 1, 241 new Covid-19 cases and 23 deaths out of 12, 383 tests conducted nationwide in the last 24 hours. Media must promote, unite country, says North minister By SIMON MUNTEMBA

THERE is need for the media to play a critical role of promoting peace, unity, tranquility and discourage hate speech among political players as the country heads towards the August 12 election to avoid bloodshed, Northern Province Minister, Chungu Bwalya has advised. Govt receives kudos for improved water supply in Chongwe By JOHN KOMBE

THE improved water supply in Chongwe has cheered residents who have commended government for providing a solution to the water crisis. In an interview, Chongwe Central ward councillor Juvenalis Mulimbika disclosed that the Chongwe water improvement project which was now complete had improved the water situation in the area. “The water project which was tapping water from Ntanishya village to Chongwe over a

stretch of 27 km was a success and the people finally have water on their taps,” he said. He observed that this development was even more important because it had come at a time when the district and country was grappling with the swelling numbers of Covid-19 infections. He said that without clean and safe water preventing the pandemic would be very difficult. He was happy that people had access to clean and safe water. Mr. Mulimbika urged the residents to guard the infra-

structure jealously. He said the multi-million Kwacha infrastructure must be protected by all citizens. Some residents talked to confirmed that the water situation had improved much to their delight. Mr Daudino Sibanda, who runs a business within the town centre described the development as a boost to his business. He said that water was life and it was critical for any business premises. Mr Sibanda said that the erratic supply of water in the past was very inconveniencing.

MAN KILLED IN DISPUTE OVER CAP

A

LUPANE man allegedly beat his friend, who later died in hospital, following a dispute over a cap. Matabeleland North po lice spokesperson Inspector Glory Bhanda confirmed the incident which happened on Saturday. “On 2 January 2021 at 1pm Moffat Moyo (37) and Than dazani Ngwenya were drink ing beer at Sivalo business centre under Chief Mabikwa. “A misunderstanding en sued between the two after Ngwenya alleged that Moyo had stolen his cap. Moyo left intending to go to his home stead but Ngwenya followed him armed with a knobker

rie and assaulted him several times on the head,” said Insp Bhanda. She said Moyo escaped from Ngwenya and informed his brother Mr Phibeon Moyo who escorted him to St Luke’s Hospital where he was transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital for further manage ment. “His condition deterio rated on 3 January and he died while on admission. The accused vanished after com mitting the offence and is still at large. “As police we are con cerned about these unnec essary killings which are on the increase. If people have disputes they should engage third parties who will assist

them to come to a common understanding,” said Insp Bhanda. The murder follows the killing of three people in Matabeleland South prov ince during the Christmas period. The first case occurred in Tjehanga Village in Bulilima District under Chief Masen du where Putshu Moyo alias Mabutho/Kuzvinetsa whose age could not be obtained al legedly fatally stabbed Lizwe Mguni (26). The two neighbours had had a dispute on December 18 while drinking beer at a local shop at about 10pm. Matabeleland South Po lice spokesperson Inspec tor Loveness Mangena said

the second murder case was also in Bulilima District in Bambadzi area under Chief Madlambuzi where Finios Mlalazi (42) struck Nkululeko Makhaba (48) with a log on the head and he died on the spot. The two were earlier at Bambadzi Business Centre and had a dispute over an undisclosed issue. She said the third murder happened in Bhazha area of Matobo District on Decem ber 23 when a man axed his wife to death. “Sidingulwazi Hlabangani (26) of Tungwane B Village under Chief Masuku struck his wife Sinini Maphosa (21) when a dispute over an un known issue ensued,” she said. - NEHANDARADIO

Prophet bashed for undressing church members A BLUFFHILL prophet was on Sunday bashed in Mbare for undressing and sexually abusing followers during deliverance time. Prophet Jerico Nyika of Chariot of Fire ministries was trapped by an uniden tified lover of one of his vic tims. One of his victims only identified as E Kayz narrated to the lover how she and three other married women from Mbare were ordered to undress and take a bath while being monitored in Waterfalls on New Year’s Day. The lover was also shown love messages sent to one E Kayz by Prophet Nyika us ing his WhatsApp foreign contact number leading to the trap. Prophet Nyika con firmed the incident saying

he was asked to pay US$100 for his freedom and his Mer cedes Benz’s tyres were re moved. He only got them after

paying US$100. The lover, who refused to identify him self, told H-Metro that the trap was to expose the man of cloth for sexually abusing

women. “It is a shame that married women are being bedded in the name of de liverance. This came to light after my girlfriend disclosed how they were treated at a house in Waterfalls,” he said. “They were asked to un dress and put on white cloths he claimed were anointed to remove evil spirits which he said were causing bad omen. “They took a bath sprin kled with coarse salt in dif ferent rooms where Prophet Nyika would monitor and when he came to my girl friend he asked to help her in taking the bath and she refused. “He later sent a love message to my girlfriend ad miring her body and gave a false prophecy that her lover was not serious with her. - BMETRO

Premature ejaculation sparks domestic violence REJOICE Moyo (27) from Lupane business centre does not have a sex life as her husband’s bedroom gun “vomits” as soon as it feels the warmth of the private parts. This is what Rejoice has been going through for the past six months after her husband Mncedisi Sibanda (38) developed an erec tile problem. “My husband came back complaining of stomach problem from where he was hired to fix the yard and cut poles in July last year. After a week his bedroom gun would “vomit” as soon as it felt the warmth of my thighs or my private parts. I have been enduring this for the past six months,” she told court. She went a step further

and said her husband turns violent when she tries to talk to him about the sensitive

issue. “My husband is a violent person when I engage him

about this bedroom issue problem so as to solve it, he gets angry and starts to ac cuse me of being inconsid erate about our sick child. He would then hit me with fists or slap me in front of our children. My life is in danger and I’m afraid he would kill me as he has threatened to do so on several occasions,” she told the court. She added that her hus band verbally abuses her even in the presence of her relatives. “He is also in the habit of just getting angry when my relatives visit us, he would just cause an ar gument after that he would insult me in the presence of them due to that I’m apply ing for a peace order against him.” - BMETRO

Fight over church offerings MONEY is the root of their fight!

A CHURCH meeting was dis rupted last week after an angry daughter of the late Guta Ram wari founder allegedly burst into a meeting which her broth er had convened and accused him of squandering church offerings before her brother re taliated by attacking her with a chair. In a fit of rage Joseph Tayali’s sister Sarah reportedly went a gear up with her demands as she threatened to shoot her brother if he did not surrender the money to her. A church elder had to step in and stop the fight. Joseph re ported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of his sister. Sarah appeared before Bul awayo magistrate Stephen Ndhlovu facing a charge of threats to commit murder as defined in section 186(1) as read with section 47 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform ) Act (Chapter 9:23). Due to lack of evidence she was found not guilty. In arriving at his ruling the magistrate said: “ There is lack of evidence and the evidence of the witnesses did not corrobo rate. He also noted that Sarah threatened to shoot and not to kill or murder the complain ant.” Prosecutor Nokuthula Chit sungo said Sarah stormed into

the meeting and asked her brother to use a public address system but her brother stood his ground saying the meeting was private. Joseph asked her to sit down but she refused, as a result an argument heightened between the pair. In a bid to hit her he allegedly threw a chair at her. It is said Sarah demanded her share of the church offerings and quarterly allowances while pointing out that she had a right to the share of offerings since the church was founded by her father. In her defence, Sarah submit ted that they were children of the late Guta RaMwari church founder Taxwell Tayali and were both members of the church’s supreme council. She stated that Joseph took absolute control of the church after their father’s death and had been embezzling funds and depriving her of monthly and quarterly allowances. “However, by virtue of her right, accused person attended church meeting and this pissed complainant off who became violent and started shouting at the accused. Complainant even threw a chair at the accused and this resulted in a heated argu ment between the two,” Sarah stated in her defence outline. She submitted that Joseph made a false report to the police and fabricated charges to get rid of her. - BMETRO

‘Lack of unity killing music industry’

By NOEL IYOMBWA

THE music industry keeps crawling due to lack of unity among artistes emerging artiste Dylan Mwansa has observed.

Speaking in an interview, Mwansa stage name Riskey Chimo said that sometimes

fans do play their part in supporting arts in the country but that there is no love and support for each other among some artistes. He alleged that almost every artist wants to embrace individuality instead of focusing on the bigger picture adding that if it’s in Gospel the situation is even worse. “Not until the gap between young and big artistes is merged, the Zambian Gospel industry will keep progressing at a tortoise speed. Young

artistes, it’s time to unite and change the narrative. Collaboration is key. “Zambia is a country with low population as compared to Nigeria and South Africa hence for our industry to develop there is need for the artistes to be deliberate about working together with no segregation.” Riskey Chimo is a Copperbeltbased artiste known for his creative Bemba and Nyanja rap. He is versatile in his music cater-

ing issues from one corner to another and his genre is not limited to Hip hop as he can jump to dancehall Afro beats and Up tempo Kalindula. Chimo has worked with major Zambian producers like Church Ulukuta,Dj Mzenga Man ,Mag44 ,Super Rhymed just to mention but a few. He has graced the stage at vibrant events like Kids festival, Brave only music power tour and Mukuni park food market festive in Livingstone.

Bornfire targets upcoming artistes By TERENCE MISELO FOLLOWING the continuous outcry for local upcoming artistes to have a platform that will offer support and talent promotion, Zambian businessman and music promoter Mubanga Bornfire Mulilo has announced the establishment of Bornfire Music Entertainment targeting upcoming and fresh artistes. We will be giving out details of how the project will unfold and urge everyone interested to follow our platforms,” said Mulilo who is also behind Muzo aka Alphoso. Warrant issued for Katy Perry’s alleged stalker INTERNATIONAL

A WARRANT has been issued for Katy Perry’s alleged stalker. Last year, Katy, 36, was granted a temporary restraining order against a man named William Terry, who showed up at Katy’s property after reportedly harassing her family on social media. He was charged with trespassing and was due in court in Los Angeles

last week but was a noshow. TMZ reports that a bench warrant has been issued over Terry’s failure to appear in court. Katy, her fiancé Orlando Bloom, their daughter Daisy Dove, and Orlando’s nine-year-old son Flynn have all been covered by a protective order against Terry, who is “believed homeless and living in a

He is a complete stranger who trespassed on my property, is stalking me and who threatened my family.” The singer listed the last date of harassment as September 8, when she alleged William “jumped the fence of my home in the Beverly Hills area”.

She added: “Security ordered [William] to leave. When he refused, he was placed under citizen’s arrest and then formally arrested for criminal trespass by the LAPD.” The man allegedly told Katy’s security he intended to enter the home, and the ‘Daisies’ singer also accused him of making threats on social media. - IOL

Mutale also won the Most Stylish Media Personality Award under Diamond TV to add to her successes. Although she is unable to disclose how much she was making per month, Mutale is not shy to say she makes decent amounts coming purely from hard work. She says her nature of maintaining more than one job made a huge impact on her earnings. “ I am not parading my body to be sold. If you see me do a Bio Oil advert, it’s because that’s an endorsement,” she says to insist on her hard work and respond to people that seem to have problems with some of the photos she has posted on social media like the Bio Oil photo that attracted a lot of attention. She advises that people must not judge others by their dressing. “ My posts on social media are out of influencing brands. Dressing doesn’t define who a person is. I don’t owe an explanation on how I dress. I influence different brands,” she explains. “ There are people who would wear the longest dresses but do the most evil things, in their homes and elsewhere.” On a personal front, Mutale is happy to have been that good mother to her 13- year old son, Mwape. How to decode the coverage of Kim and Kanye West's rumoured divorce AN hour before the polls closed in Georgia last Tuesday night and Americans braced for the results of one of the most consequential elections of in recent years, another story published that still managed to capture some attention. "Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are getting a divorce: 'She's done.' " That headline was courtesy of Page Six, which touted this exclusive report: Kardashian, 40, has "just had enough" of West, 43, and his attempts to run for president and erratic behaviour, and according to multiple anonymous sources, "divorce is imminent."

The story noted the support that she has given him through his struggles with mental health (West revealed his bipolar diagnosis in 2017), but added Kardashian's focus is now her quest to become a lawyer. One source told the paper that settlement talks have already started and that Kardashian has hired divorce attorney Laura Wasser, who is famous for guiding Hollywood stars through complicated breakups. (A West source also got in a dig, noting he's over the family's obsession with their reality TV empire, which he thinks is "unbearable.") And if you're wondering why this

is all coming from the Kardashian perspective, there's a reason for that. Picture: Instagram Naturally, the possible breakup of one of our culture's highest-profile couples caused shock waves through the celebrity press - although the tabloids have been on high alert since the summer, when West kicked off his campaign for president with a controversial speech that left Kardashian reportedly "furious" after he told the crowd they considered terminating her pregnancy when she was expecting their first child. In now-deleted tweets, West claimed Kardashian was trying to get a doctor

to "lock (him) up" and said he had wanted to divorce her for months. But shortly after Page Six's report lit up social media, TMZ weighed in with its own exclusive: Not so fast! "Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have been in marriage counselling, and we've learned the subject of divorce was looming for much of 2020, but they haven't given up," the site explained under the headline "KIM AND KANYE in Marriage Counselling ... DIVORCE ON THE TABLE." The article also noted that West has been living at his ranch in Wyoming and Kardashian is staying in California with their four children. - IOL

N Zambia women have historically had a quieter role in society than men and while we have made great strides in the recent decades, there are still very visible gender gaps in our country. Economic insecurity and education are catalyzing increased flexibility of gender roles and the division of labour and more and more women are entering the work force. However, there is still great disparity in workforce representation, particularly in wildlife conservation.

Women have distinct roles, knowledge, experiences, and ideas from those of men and have a lot to bring into the conservation conversation. This is particularly important because conservation projects cannot work unless everyone in a community is involved. Increasingly conservationists are recognizing this and that the lack of equal representation of women may hinder the success of some initiatives. The enormous potential women have to contribute to conservation and sustainable development is yet to be fully explored but it cannot be denied that the involvement of women is a key component in effectively meeting both conservation and development goals. It is with this is mind that Women for Conservation Zambia was launched. Women for Conservation is an inclusive network for all women who work in or are interested in wildlife conservation in Zambia to meet, share ideas and opportunities and support each other. Though women are very much involved in many environmental issues such as farming, water collection, general natural resource use, they are much less engaged in ‘professional’ conservation activities. Women do not have as many paid jobs in the sector as men and those that do have historically been few and between, particularly when looking at senior management. The female voice is an important one and Women for Conservation seeks to amplify it. Not only is the female voice in Zambia important, it is also often culturally sensitive and reflective of other marginalized groups such as the youth and disabled, of whom women are often primary caregivers.

THE INFLUENCE OF WOMEN IN CONSERVATION Women for Conservation hosts quarterly events in and around Lusaka, that enable women (and their male allies) working in conservation and those interested in conservation to share experiences both conservation related and other topics that improve livelihoods and the environment. In existence since 2017 the network, through its series of activities has increasingly raised awareness of the various conservation efforts occurring in Zambia and the women behind them. This December, Women for Conservation ended the year with a legal game meat braai hosted to educate attendees on the dangers of the illegal bushmeat trade, the link between the illegal wildlife trade and COVID-19, as well as the availability and affordability of legal game meat in Zambia. The illegal bushmeat trade is the biggest threat to wildlife populations in Zambia and the region, as killing methods such as snaring are silent and indiscriminate, harming many species of our Zambian wildlife. In 2018, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife launched the “This Is Not A Game” behaviour change campaign that targets illegal

bushmeat consumers with the message that the prod-

uct is “illegal, dangerous and carries diseases” and alter-

natively promotes legal Zambian game meat from accred-

ited suppliers. Bushmeat is unregulated, unhygienically prepared and dangerous to eat, threatening unsuspecting members of the public who may consume this unsafe product. At the event were two speakers, Thawanda Masiye, the Executive Secretary of Wildlife Producers Association of Zambia (WPAZ) and Stelia Lubasi, one of the first female legal game meat suppliers in Zambia. Both spoke of their pioneering work in Zambia’s conservation sector and the importance of preserving our wildlife by not purchasing or consuming illegal bushmeat. An important part of the work to engage more women in conservation is visibility. Speakers like Thawanda and Stelia showcase to other Zambians what young women are capable of. Leadership and inclusivity are increasingly recognized as fundamental to conservation success and these two conservationists are spearheading this mission. Women for Conservation, Zambia hosts quarterly events and can be found on facebook and instagram. To be notified of the next event kindly email Maina at maina@wcpzambia. org.

THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF GRIEVING IN ISOLATION

G

RIEF. Overwhelming and indescribable, it’s an emotion that holds a vice-like grip on our hearts, leaving a void so deep that nothing can fill. Late US poet Sylvia Platt described grief in Parliament Hill Fields: On this bald hill the new year hones its edge. Faceless and pale as china The round sky goes on minding its business. Your absence is inconspicuous; Nobody can tell what I lack. As the world experiences a pandemic of global proportions, our collective grief of losing loved ones is what binds us, albeit in a macabre way. But just as we’re navigating the new normal, there’s a pattern emerging – people are grieving in isolation, unable to share their emotional pain and trauma in physical contact with friends and family. It’s become evident in social media posts as thousands of people post tributes to the ones they’ve lost to Covid-19. “Where we once logged on to social media for entertainment to catch up with family and friends, or to de-stress after a long day, logging on to social media is currently very depressing,” says Durban-based counselling psychologist Rakhi Beekrum.

For some people, reading a constant stream of tributes and bereavement posts can have a triggering effect. When asked what impact this has on the psyche, Beekrum suggests taking a mindful approach as to how we consume social media. “If you are feeling too overwhelmed, consider a digital detox. “If going offline completely sounds too extreme, be mindful of your social media consumption – choose a time and duration to log on,” she says. “Be mindful of why you are logging on and what you are consuming. “Find more balance between online and offline activities. It’s normal to feel anxious when logging on to social media, and all we see are messages of losses and condolences. Acknowledge your feelings. You are only human. The anxiety or sadness are normal reactions to abnormal situations. Focus on self-care. Refocus on what you can control,“ Beekrum concludes. For those who are dealing with the loss of a loved one, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) suggests the following: GET SUPPORT

“The funeral notices, tributes and messages of condolence makes the reality of Covid-19 difficult to ignore. By this time, everyone knows someone who either survived or lost their lives to the pandemic,”

Beekrum “The funeral notices, tributes and messages of condolence makes the reality of Covid-19 difficult to ignore. By this time, everyone knows someone who either survived or lost their lives to the pandemic,” she adds. Yes, it’s an overwhelming feeling of loss and despair, but Beekrum suggests that sometimes sharing that grief with others online can provide some solace in the midst of social distancing. “They may seek comfort from the tributes, prayers and words of comfort from others,” she explains. “On the other hand, many feel more anxious and depressed. Social media is no longer entertaining or a light-hearted distraction from the stress of our daily lives. If in the past it allowed us to escape, now it’s a reflection of reality.”

Support from others is important in the healing process. It’s important to express your feelings with people you trust when you’re grieving. Accept support; don’t try to grieve alone, no matter how strong and self-sufficient you are. Sometimes people want to help but don’t know how to – tell them what you need. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

The stress of a loss can deplete your energy and emotional reserves very quickly. So look after your physical and emotional needs. FACE YOUR FEELINGS You may be able to suppress your grief for a while but you can’t avoid it. Healing means facing your feelings and acknowledging your pain. Unresolved grief can also lead to depression, anxiety, substance abuse and health problems. EXPRESS YOUR FEELINGS In whatever way makes sense for you, express your feelings. Write about your loss in a journal; write a letter saying the things you never got to say; make a scrapbook or photo album; get involved in a cause or organisation that was important to him or her; or allow yourself alone time to mourn in your own way. Keeping your pain bottled up doesn’t help you heal. - IOL

ISSUANCE of Vat Amendment policy paper SI No. 125 of 2020 has prevented a surge in fuel pump prices on the positive side and a good strategy in a short term but a fallacy on the fiscal side, especially in this year as it will greatly affect negatively on both the economic outlook and the 2021 national budget patterns of share. Inflation needs serious and long-lasting solutions to arrest upward escalating effects, the inflation rate is currently sitting at 19.2 percent as it actually poses a daunting effect on the local economy if not properly addressed adequately with foresight required. Lawrence Sikutwa Associates (LSA) finally agrees to sell off some shares, now the group has lost controlling grip on its operation through a handsome deal of US$35 million to an investment vehicle XYLEM Trading Limited of South Africa with regional operational tentacles. Kwacha surged into a positive movement on

Thursday though it was a nominal growth recorded this business week due to reduced demand on the global currency. Government tries to take over KCM under a prospective plan to sample local potential after almost 28 years of ZCCM direct mine control, a movement which will see through with an experimenting impact on the key sector of the economy. However, it’s worth noting that copper did well during this business week and the capital market performed well. On the other hand we saw Gold prices going down with a small margin. The New Covid-19 wave pronounced deadly, as it takes a new dimension which calls for a different model of approach and a new tactical plan to combat economic impact anticipated with it. Zambia's central bank envisions economic growth from Gold purchases, which will be reserved as a strategic asset in the vault to caution local economic turbulences but stakeholders demand transparency. AN ASPIRING CANDIDATE'S HOPE Dear Editor,

O

VER the years, politicians vying for office in Munali Constituency have come to us pleading with us to vote for them with the same messages; 1. Clean water for Munali 2. Clean environment for Munali 3. Crime-free for Munali 4. Functional drainages for Munali 5. Good roads for Munali 6. No garbage for Munali 7. Youth skills development for Munali 8. Improved markets for Munali All these problems keep recurring at each election every five years and these have been the many issues that every elected Member of Parliament has failed to resolve over the years. During every election, we have aspiring candidates building 1 by 3 classroom blocks at schools within the areas, drilling boreholes here and there and several handouts in material forms are the order of the day to hoodwink the electorates. After that is done and they assume office, off they go until the next election. Come on guys, this is 2021. People need a HAND UP and not a HANDOUT. Ladies and gentlemen, such politics no longer offer hope for a better Munali. Such politics are archaic. We’ve had them since the time of Mr Ronald Penza (MHSCRIEP).

The challenges we face are not spontaneous, needing kneejerk solutions, NO, they are systematic and need a systematic and sustainable response. The 2021 elections are a chance to move forward to a better livelihood. My campaign is offering you leadership and hope for a better Munali. How are we going to eliminate the perpetual problems of Munali? 1. Drilling communal boreholes in every ward of the constituency through CDF with the help of the several drilling companies located in Munali. Our engagements with the companies are yielding positives. 2. A clean Munali through a “Keep my yard and surrounding clean programme” 3. A crime and alcohol abuse free Munali by keeping youths busy through talent and skills development 4. A good road infrastructure through consistent engagements with the local council to constantly maintain needing roads. 5. An enhanced and defined garbage collection process in conjunction with the local council 6. Well maintained and sanitised market environment for our traders 7. Harvesting the flood waters through streams that are within the constituency and that pass through, through a well-maintained drainage system 8. A green and clean Munali

through tree planting to contribute to the reduction of the effects of climate change The measures addressed here dear colleagues, are intended to provide a good surrounding in the neighbourhood, reduce on communal diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery etc. that are affecting not only Munali but several constituencies. Government’s role is to provide public goods and services which are a basic human right for all such as education, health and security amongst others. Every election

We have aspiring candidates building 1 by 3 classroom blocks at schools within the areas, drilling boreholes here and there and several handouts in material forms are the order of the day to hoodwink the electorates.

During my term of office, I will lobby Government to build additional schools in the constituency to provide quality education to the community, lobby for improved health care through the stocking up of medicines and medical equipment in our health facilities within the constituency.

As you may be aware, Munali houses the biggest modern hospital in Zambia. I will advocate for increased Police stations to provide security and maintain law and order within the constituency to deter criminals. Job opportunities have greatly been affected in our country and a recovery will not be in the immediate. As your elected representative, my role will be to encourage and promote talent and skills development through scholarships into trade schools and recreation activities such as sports development, setting up a music studio in each ward and creating a defined market for various products manufactured through trade skills. These and many other problems and well-defined solutions will be comprehensively addressed in the manifesto that will be made available in due time. Munali residents, let’s avoid having the same issues year in and year out. Let us aspire for a better set of campaign problems come 2026 because all these will be a thing of the past once elected into office. Let us lead in the quest for better leadership and a better community. I am offering that leadership and I am offering you hope. I need your support Stay Safe, Covid-19 is real God Bless. CHIMBALANGA SEMBA, Independent candidate for Munali Constituency in the August 12 general elections.

Trump

Dear Editor, PROVERBS 2:18 - "There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." Our tongues have a lot of power. Proverbs 18:21 confirms this by saying, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits." As leaders, we must be careful with what we say; we must use our words with caution and restraint; we must be very responsible with our utterances because people believe and follow what we say. When I was President of the University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) I could tell students to go to the road side and they could run to the road side; I could tell them to retreat and they could immediately do so. When United States President Donald Trump encouraged his cadres to march to the capitol they invaded it; when he told them to stop

and go home, they did just that. As leaders, we must not use bitterness or hatred to communicate with our followers because whatever we say, they follow. When we lose elections, we must accept the result, it is the will of the people. We should not denounce the Electoral Commission of Zambia, the Police, the Judiciary; we should not call people dull, foolish, uneducated kaponyas just because they did not support or vote for us. Trump lost the election, he petitioned 60 times and lost all the petitions; they had recounts after recounts and still he lost but he continued claiming that the election was rigged even when he failed to produce evidence. And what happened, the U.S. has lost its standing as the standard bearer of democracy, it’s been reduced in Trump's own words into a ‘shit hole.” ANTONIO M. MWANZA.

ZIM NURSES STRIKE OVER VIRUS EQUIPMENT SHORTAGES

H

ARARE - Nurses at one of Zimbabwe's busiest hospitals were on strike Friday, complaining of shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) as the country battles rising numbers of coronavirus cases. Nursing staff at Harare's Sally Mugabe Hospital announced the strike on Thursday, a day after a senior colleague collapsed and died from Covid-19. Numerous other nurses at the hospital have since tested positive with the virus, while others are displaying symptoms, Enock Dongo, president of the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA), said. "What nurses demanded is PPE. Covid-19 is now at the workplace and we have no defence," he said. The nursing strike comes after the country registered 34 deaths in 24 hours - the highest daily toll in the country since the start of the pandemic. The Gambia discovers 3 tonnes of cocaine in salt shipment BANJUL - Law enforcement officers in The Gambia discovered nearly three tonnes of cocaine in a salt shipment from Ecuador, its drugs agency said on Friday, in the country's largest-ever seizure. Trump riots: Democrats plan to introduce article of impeachment WASHINGTON - Democrats plan to introduce an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump for his role in Wednesday's invasion of the US Capitol. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would move forward with impeachment if Trump did not resign immediately. The charge of "incitement of insurrection" is set to be introduced by House Democrats tomorrow. They accuse Trump of encouraging a riot in Congress in which five people died. President-elect Joe Biden said impeachment was for Congress to decide, but said he had thought "for a long time President Trump was not fit to hold the job." The White House dismissed the impeachment as a "politically motivated" move that would "only serve to further divide our great country." Nearly 160 House of Representatives Democrats have signed on to the bill, which congressmen Ted Lieu of California and David Cicilline of Rhode Island began drafting while they were sheltering in place during Wednesday's chaos at the Capitol. Ramaphosa calls for review of alcohol legislation, sets Covid-19 as govt's priority for 2021 JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for tougher legislation and community mobilisation against the abuse of alcohol. In the ANC's annual January 8 statement to celebrate the party's 109 birthday held virtually, the president said temporary restrictions that were placed on the availability of alcohol under the state of disaster regulations demonstrated the extent to which abuse of alcohol fuels violence, trauma and reckless behaviour and places a burden on the health system and emergency services. "We must take measures to reduce the abuse of alcohol through a combination of leg-

islative and other measures and community mobilisation." He added foremost on the government's agenda for the year would be combating the spread of the coronavirus. "To overcome Covid-19, we are preparing to implement a mass vaccination programme that reaches all South Africans as appropriate quantities of an effective and suitable vaccine are procured." Ramaphosa also cautioned against disinformation relating to Covid-19 and unfounded conspiracy theories, its treatment and the development of vaccines. The rollout of vaccines and its acquisitions has re-

ceived criticism in some corners of the ANC and its alliance partners. Cosatu president Zingiswa Losi and ANC Gauteng provincial secretary Jacob Khawe both made comments about the vaccine that could be construed as criticism against its use. SACP second general-secretary Solly Mapaila told journalists the government should consider acquiring a vaccine from its trading partners in the Brics nations. Their remarks came as individuals as well as the Young Nurses Indaba Trade Union said health workers did not want to be among the first to be injected with the vaccine. – BBC.

DRC frees soldiers linked to Kabila’s assassination

Col Eddy Kapend was a senior officer to assassinated President Laurent Kabila

KINSHASA - Twenty-three soldiers accused of being behind the assassination of former president of Democratic Republic of Congo have been released after spending nearly two decades behind bars. Laurent Kabila was shot dead by a bodyguard in 2001. A military trial that followed jailed dozens of soldiers, including Coonell Eddy Kapend, his personal aide. Rights groups criticised the trial. Some in DR Congo believe the soldiers were used as scapegoats.

There has been much speculation about who gave the orders for Kabila's assassination, including suggestions that foreign powers were involved, as it came at a time when several neighbouring countries were involved in the conflict in DR Congo. The soldiers' release follows pardons issued by President Félix Tshisekedi who took over from Joseph Kabila, the son of the late president, two years ago. Kabila repeatedly resisted calls to pardon the prisoners

- 11 of whom died whilst in custody. The release comes amid a power struggle between President Tshisekedi and his predecessor, who continues to wield considerable influence in the country. Tshisekedi ended his coalition with Kabila's party - which holds a majority in parliament - following years of tension. The president is currently seeking new coalition partners that would give him a majority in parliament. – BBC.

BUFFALOES BATTERED …as Government bans soccer fans

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

T

ENNANT Chembo picked his first win as Lumwana Radiants coach after guiding his team to a 1-0 victory over Green Buffaloes in a Week-12 MTN/FAZ Super Division fixture at Independence Stadium in Solwezi. A 13th minute goal from the experienced former Zanaco FC striker, Felix Nyaende gave Radiants their first win since Chembo took over after the club fired Patrick Phiri. The win propelled Radiants to 15th position with 10 points on par with 14th-placed Buffaloes

who missed a chance to move to 11th position on the league table following their loss. At Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Red Arrows put up a spirited fight to beat Buildcon FC 2-1 thanks to goals from Felix Simwanza and age-defying veteran James Chamanga. Simwanza had given Arrows an early lead after breaking the deadlock in the 20th minute but the lead was cancelled by Brian Mwila who scored and restored parity in the 24th minute. Mwila’s goal was his first in the Super Division since his return from Austria. Last season’s top scorer Chamanga scored the

decisive goal in the 33rd minute as Arrows held on to collect maximum three points away from home. The win in Ndola moved Arrows to ninth on the league table with 15 points on par with eighth-placed Kabwe Warriors who were stunned 2-1 by ZANACO FC on Friday. At Khosa Stadium in Kafue, struggling Young Green Eagles held Indeni to a 1-1 stalemate as fans watched the game from the tall trees around the stadium following the ban imposed on soccer fans from watching matches from the stadiums. Today, action returns with NAPSA Stars taking on Prison

Leopards while the fixtures involving Lusaka Dynamos, Nkana and Zesco United who were scheduled to take on Green Eagles, Power Dynamos and Nkwazi respectively have been postponed because Nkana and Eagles were involved in continental games. Meanwhile, Government has banned football fans from accessing the football stadia due to a rise in the Covid-19 cases. In an interview Minister of Sports, Youth and Child Development Emmanuel Mulenga urged fans to follow the games from their homes on television to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

Napsa beefs up squad By MICHAEL MIYOBA

NAPSA Stars Football Club has beefed up its squad with the inclusion of Burundian midfielder Enock Sabumuka and Kenyan international David Owino Odiambo from Zesco United. Sabumukama and Odiambo join the Pensioners as free agents after they left the Ndola giants.. NAPSA Stars Technical Director Honor Janza confirmed the signing of the two former players in a statement issued by the club’s Media and Public Relations Officer Gwen Chipasula. Janza who is also the club’s general manager confirmed that Sabumukama, has penned a three-year deal while Kenyan national Odhiambo has signed for two years. “We are more than excited to have these two on board because we have no doubt they come in with experience to help us both in the league and continental competitions,” Janza said. Meanwhile, after loaning midfielder Kapembwa Musonda to Buildcon FC for one year, the club has released six players. Those released include defenders Dennis Dauda, Keegan Zulu, Smart Banda, Stephen Phiri, midfielder John Sikaumbwe and striker Andrew Tololwa. "Everyone at Napsa Stars wishes all the six players all the very best in their futures and thank them for their time and commitment at the club,” Janza adds. And club Head coach Mohamed Fathi is confident the pair of Sabumukama and Odiambo will add value to the club as it competes in the local league and the continental games. Fathi who described his teams pairing with Gor Mahia in the CAF Confederations Cup as a fair draw said NAPSA Stars will compete as it seeks to write its own history in the Confederations Cup.
