REACHING OUT INDICATIONS are that Zambians do not have to be apprehensive about the country’s future going into the August 12 general elections. That is if the solidarity shown yesterday at the Patriotic Front (PF) General Conference is what the political landscape will entail. The PF general conference, that was supposed to be an internal family affair turned out to be a gathering that embraced solidarity by reaching out to other political players. More than 10 leaders from opposition parties attended. The message and we are confident that it has been delivered, is that what divides Zambians is artificial, that at the end of the day, all pay their allegiance to Zambia. The PF has shown that despite all its faults, it is capable of reaching out to all Zambians who wish to see the country flourish. It showed it was an all embracing political machine. Who could have imagined for example, to see Mr Chishimba Kambwili, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader offer solidarity by accepting the invitation to attend the official opening of the conference? Mr Kambwili was probably the last person anyone expected to see among the sea of green that marked the PF conference judging from the manner in which he left the party. Even his unreserved apology to President Edgar Lungu and Lusaka businessman Valden Findlay for accusing them of using the Presidential jet to courier drugs could not have prepared Zambians for the shock most experienced at seeing him at the conference. There were others too who chose to rise above petty politics and attend the conference – talk of Rainbow Party leader Wynter Kabimba, a former secretary-general of the PF, FDD president Edith Nawakwi and EEP’s Chilufya Tayali. Their presence at the conference should send a clear message to their supporters that they do not need to maim their opponents for they are one. If anything, this message of national unity should extend to other political parties and their cadres that political differences do not make them enemies. As political pundits have so often pointed out, politics, and indeed this year’s general elections are not a do or die affair. It is merely allowing the various political parties market their manifestos on what they expect to do once in government and leave the choice to the voters whose decision must be binding to all. The electorate will give a five-year mandate to one of the contending presidential candidates and political parties to spearhead the country’s development path. As Mr Kambwili pointed out, politics was not about fighting one another but co-existence. Mr Kabimba for his part urged President Lungu to ignore the prophets of doom who were trying to incite the citizens by claiming that, “there will be bloodshed in these elections.” Yes, there should not be any bloodshed if all political players abide to play by the rules by adhering to the laws of the land and let the Electoral Commission of Zambia carry out its mandate without trying to undermine it at every turn. The PF general conference is a harbinger of better things to come if all political parties embrace common values of co-existence.
Unsurprisingly
Kambwili and corruption allegations By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE
C
HISHIMBA Kambwili’s grassroots popularity on the Copperbelt did not come by mere chance, and neither was it inherited from his political mentor’s long dalliance with Zambian politics - albeit being an ardent student of the late founding father of the ruling Patriotic Front, Michael Sata. His current status was not accorded to him on a silver platter; he had earned it by sheer political determination. In Zambia’s politics, Kambwili leads the pack when it comes to grassroots mobilisation on the Copperbelt. But enter 2021 and it appears his undoing is increasingly being linked to his failure to get to the second-in-command top seat in the UPND-led opposition alliance and become Hakainde Hichilema’s running mate in the August 12 general elections. Besides, his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has been enjoying a relative following across the country, is on the brink of collapse. A rebellion openly orchestrated by one of Kambwili’s staunchest allies in the UPND-led opposition alliance and his party’s deputy leader, Joseph Akafumba, began to form when majority partnering parties agreed to a name-change. The alliance-name became “UPND Alliance” ostensibly because the voting public would not countenance the existence of other aspiring candidates from smaller parties wishing to be adopted in the opposition alliance while those branded-UPND were well-respected nationwide. Kambwili protested over this decision because in his view, it was disrespectful of other partnering parties. A pantomime-like power struggle within the NDC ensued with court interdicts and counter-interdicts being sought in the High Court by either side to prevent each other from heading the party. Besides, ever since Kambwili got fired from the PF government and expelled from the ruling party, he has spent recent years as a vocal critic of the country’s President and many of his former close associates in PF, questioning their “wealth,” connections and the source and use of government funds for citizens’ empowerment initiatives. Strange as it may sound, to Kambwili’s credit his non-stop false allegations of PF’s corruption earned him accolades and rare praise from pro-regime change political parties and the Lusaka-based Transparency International Zambia (TIZ). But the praises
of TIZ and the myriad of pro-UPND opposition surrogates and civil society organisations could not salvage his political support base among the discerning general public who dismissed his graft accusations as sourgrapes and full of hot air. But sometimes hot air is just what is needed when purveyors of falsehoods want something ratcheted up on mainstream and social media platforms. However, matters took a turn for the worse when Kambwili unreservedly apologised to President Edgar Lungu and businessman Valden Findlay for accusing them of being drug dealers, saying he was misinformed on the matter. In his reaction, President Lungu responded that he had noted Kambwili’s apology and accepted it in the true Christian spirit. Mr Lungu added that what mattered was someone’s actions and deeds after one’s apology for the wrongs they had done – much to the chagrin of the UPND’s diehard supporters who had been championing Kambwili’s false allegations of PF’s corruption.
Unsurprisingly
Unsurprisingly, Kambwili has been in the spotlight following his recent apology to President Lungu, prompting speculation that the former PF minister intended to do the unimaginable and rejoin the ruling party ahead of the 2021 elections. Unsurprisingly, Kambwili has been in the spotlight following his recent apology to President Lungu, prompting speculation that the former PF minister intended to do the unimaginable and rejoin the ruling party ahead of the 2021 elections. He had also faced arrest and was previously charged with criminal defamation of the Head of State. Besides, he had made various allegations aimed at high-ranking PF officials in recent years, warning them that he would disclose further details if pushed. His apology to President Lungu came following his departure from the opposition “UPND Alliance,” which has seen the NDC split into two factions.
That matters have not been rosy in NDC is now Zambia’s worst-kept secret. The frosty relations within NDC were fuelled by Kambwili’s arraignment and conviction on criminal charges by the Magistrates Court - pending appeal in the High Court. This move, rather than cement cracks in the party, widened the rift. NDC has now hit the rocks and the damage is becoming more visible. A small group of pro-UPND officials in the party have continued to make one illogical allegation after another meant to smear NDC and undermine the party’s top brasss. There has been a propaganda campaign by some officials determined to create an impression that Kambwili was wooing his own party members to rejoin the PF. For failing to quell internal rebellion in his own party, Kambwili will have to go an extra mile, to either regain or recruit new allies to replace a sizeable lost chunk of his former support base. As he shuttles to the August 12 general elections, his chances of the presidential ultimate prize are compromised by his party’s excessive internal haemorrhage and his inability to keep friends in either the PF or the “UPND Alliance.” The nagging questions are: Why should PF officials accept Kambwili’s self-confessed contrition? If hurting PF officials with hitherto false allegations of corruption offended them, then why should they value him and absolve him from all misdeeds? The PF officials must know that the longer they are seen to be tolerating Kambwili’s waywardness, the more they are seen to be vacillating political leaders. Probably due to the inescapable political significance Kambwili’s self-induced apology has in the ruling party, some PF officials might be feeling some ambivalence towards this apology until August 12. The lessons from NDC and UPND’s shenanigans might be too fresh in their minds to forget. But who can blame them? Besides, they must know that Kambwili’s vitriol, his position on false allegations of corruption and his crude, graft-accusing character assassinations had damaged both the internal and external image of the PF, the government and Zambia as a whole. The fact that Zambia, as evidenced recently by its local currency free-falling exchange rate, had lost direct foreign investment is a harbinger of worse to come since Kambwili’s graft-accusing invective has already been taken seriously by global investors. This is the most painful conclusion and reality.

Greens vs Reds CONTINUE EXPLAINING COVID-19 don’t vote for wrong people From Page 1
“There comes a time when people must put aside their personal and narrow interests. This country is divided into regions politically. There is region A and region B which we all know. This year’s election is not about Chishimba Kambwili or Winter Kabimba, it is about the reds vs the greens. When A inclinations and B inclinations field too many Presidential candidates, you will make this country to go into wrong hands. “I will appeal to my elder brother (Mr Kabimba) to consider having a meeting where we can as much as possible agree to reduce the number of Presidential candidates in order to avoid this country to go into the wrong hands,” Mr Kambwili said. I know very much about that party (UPND), he said, I have been inside there and if Zambians make a mistake of voting them, they will regret. “In Bemba they say, ukupesha ilungu kwendamo, naliyendamo elo natolokamo. Chili kuli imwe. Ukwalinsoke takwafwile umuntu,” he said. ( I have been there and jumped out. Fore warned is forarmed.) Mr Kambwili who hailed the PF for embracing other political parties by way of inviting them to attend the conference said politics was not about fighting one another but co-existence. And Rainbow Party president, Winter Kabimba congratulated President Lungu for being unanimously endorsed by the PF central committee as the sole Presidential candidate for the August 12 general
elections. Mr Kabimba who jokingly said as his former classmate at the University of Zambia he will give him tough competition at the forthcoming elections urged the Head of State to guard the Presidency jealously to avoid it getting into wrong hands. “Here is my prayer your Excellency, the Presidency of this country must remain in our class. We must guard this Presidency jealously. It must remain in our class in 2021, 2026 and beyond,’ Mr Kabimba said. He thanked President Lungu for having accommodated criticism from opposition political party leaders. Mr Kabimba also has urged President Lungu to ignore the prophets of doom who were trying to incite the citizens by claiming that, “there will be bloodshed in this elections”. Mr Kabimba said Zambians were peaceful people and they are more peaceful during elections. As we move towards the August elections, he said, it is the duty of each one of us to ensure peace prevails. It is not only your duty but all of us. We will therefore join hands with you to ensure that peace is maintained. FDD president, Edith Nawakwi said the ruling party was making his campaign difficult as it has delivered in all sectors including having reduced lad-shedding. She also thanked the party for inviting her and other opposition parties to the party general conference and urged other parties to emulative the gesture.

Bishop Kaela said the church should be involved in encouraging members to take part in the vaccination meant to insulate them from Covid-19. Pick candidates of good character - Bishop Ndhlovu By NOEL IYOMBWA POLITICAL parties should scrutinise all aspiring candidates to have leaders of good character, Bible Gospel Church in Africa- BIGOCA overseer, Bishop Peter Ndhlovu has urged Bishop Ndhlovu said in an interview that candidates should not be adopted because they have money which they are throwing around, but that they should be picked on merit and loyal. He said political parties should come up with a mechanism that will ensure that only men and women of character are ushered into respective offices and serve the people diligently. Bishop Ndhlovu observed that some politicians enter into politics only to squander the country’s resources and they forget promises made to the local communities and even to the church. He also advised political parties to avoid picking candidates on tribal lines to stand in a particular region.
“Some people enter politics to destabilise and siphon the country’s resources, we need men and women in political offices with good character and God fearing. Bishop Ndhlovu said the church will support candidates of good character and God fearing. He stated that politicians are now visiting churches and making pledges but that once voted into office, some politicians don’t make efforts to return and thank God for being voted into office. Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary-General Davies Mwila recently disclosed that the party will announce its successful candidates to contest on its ticket in the August 12 general elections on May 17, 2021. `RESOLVE ZESCO, CEC IMPASSE’ … standoff not good for mining sector By PETER SICHALI
T
HE continued stand-off between Zesco and Copperbert Energy Corporation (CEC) will create unstable power supply to mines and needs to be resolved expeditiously, Mine Workers’ Union of Zambia (MUZ) president Joseph Chewe has said. Mr Chewe said this could eventually affect planning and may affect operations of the mines and lead to job losses. He said the stand-off has created uncertainty and unpredictability in the mining sector because the industry depends on power.
Mr Chewe
"The continued standoff will create unstable power planning because mines plan in terms of power and this puts hundreds of jobs at stake due to uncertainty," Mr Chewe said. Mr Chewe said the stand-off has put hundreds of jobs at stake and therefore needs urgent attention. He said there is need for the two parties to dialogue and reach common ground to avoid job losses. Mr Chewe said quick resolution of the misunderstanding will guarantee continuity and stability in the mining sector. "These misunderstandings have taken time and therefore it is im-
By SIMON MUNTEMBA and PETER SICHALI THE ruling Patriotic Front (PF) is more likely to win the August 12 general elections because it is busy reconciling and mobilising members unlike the UPND which is scrambling for Government positions it has not yet formed, former UPND Mbabala Member of Parliament, Ephraim Belemu has said. In an interview, Mr Belemu said it was clear that the opposition has lost ground as evidenced by prominent members ditching the par-
ty.
He said the UPND leadership lacks focus and strategy to win elections. "UPND can't win elections with the mentality leaders have. Look, they are busy fighting for positions in the government they have not yet formed, forgetting that there is a crucial election to win in August. They simply lack focus and strategy to win an election," Mr Belemu said. He added, "PF is likely to win because the leadership is mobilising and reconciling with old members. And you know, politics is about
numbers." He said he did not regret ditching the UPND for PF because the party was more organised and all-inclusive. Mr Belemu said he will vigorously campaign for PF to ensure it wins by a landslide margin in the August elections. Meanwhile, former FDD Spokesperson Yotam Mtayachalo has said the resignation of prominent and long serving opposition politicians from the major opposition party to join the Patriotic Front is a sign that the major opposition political party is crumbling
Clergy to hold national prayers for 2021 general elections THE Lusaka Ministers’ Fellowship in association with the Pastors Fellowships from all 10 provinces have flagged off the national prayer initiative for the 2021 general elections. Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka, Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs Permanent Secretary, Howard Sikwela commended the initiative saying it has been long overdue for the church to take a lead in national matters. Reverend Sikwela noted that it was imperative for the country to host peaceful electoral processes from the campaigns, announcement of results, and after the elections. He urged the National Minister's fellowship to continue with such kind of activities, saying that it is the only way the country can actualise the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation. Rev Sikwela urged all Zambians to participate in the programme because the initiative is aimed at upholding the peace in
the country even after the general elections on August 12. “I want to state that the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs fully supports this kind of initiative. When the church decides to pray for a nation, it is only in order for all Zambians and churches to support such initiatives,” Rev Sikwela indicated. And Lusaka Ministers Fellowship chairman Christopher Kabunda explained that the church is aware of the positive and negative potential that elections can bring in the country, hence the need to host prayers to bless the campaign landscape. Bishop Kabunda disclosed that the prayers will be hosted on May 8, 2021 under the theme: proclaiming peaceful, issue based political campaigns to provide responsible leadership for the next five years of Zambia. He explained that the National Ministers Fellowship was confident that going forward, the country shall hold peaceful elec-
toral processes, perceiving that Jesus being the prince of peace will saturate the hearts of all citizens to value peace and respect for one another. “This campaign period will establish a foundation upon which the next government shall stand for the next five years. Our sincere prayer is that this foundation shall not be stained with blood, corruption, insults, witchcraft or failure to honour God’s image,” Bishop Kabunda stated. He added that beyond May 8, 2021, the Ministers fellowship will meet on July 31, 2021, October 18, 2021 for thanksgiving and also on December 29, 2021 to celebrate entry into the 30th year of the national priesthood of the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation. Meanwhile, National Ministers Fellowship organising chairman Canon Sihubwa explained that the objective of the fellowship was to bring the church and political players together. – ZANIS.

portant for the parties to understand that the mining sector is bigger than all of us because it has created thousands of jobs therefore there is need to be reasonable and reach a compromise," Mr Chewe said. And Mine Suppliers and Contractors Association of Zambia president Augustine Mubanga said there is need for resolution of the dispute between Zesco and CEC to avoid any disruption of activities in the mining sector. Mr Mubanga said Government and CEC should dialogue and find common ground to avoid disruption of economic and mining activities.
Belemu says UPND busy sharing govt positions instead of mobilising while the ruling party's popularity is growing from strength to strength ahead of 12th August,2021 general elections,. Mr Mtayachalo said the ruling party has positioned itself well on the ground hence being the party of choice because of its vibrant mobilization activities countrywide and more importantly it has a clear message of hope to the people of Zambia and as such prospects of it retaining power after this year's general elections are high. He said the ruling party will retain power this year because it has been win-

ning almost all by elections even in the opposition strongholds. “If really the people of Zambia wanted change as being claimed by the opposition, the ruling party would have been losing these elections the way it used to be with the MMD prior to the 2011 general elections, ” Mr Mtayachalo said. Mr Mtayachalo however, said the PF must not take things for granted but continue to work hard and reach out to people so that come 12th august,2021 the ruling party must win convincingly in order for it to continue implementing various ambitious developmental projects President Lungu and his administration have embarked on especially in the area of infrastructure development.
POLICE officers must be alert and carry out their duties in a professional manner, says Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations Charity Katanga. She cautioned police officers to be wary of politicians who would want to use them to their advantage. Ms Katanga was speaking when she officiated at the commemoration of the 41-Intake 10th anniversary at Kamfinsa Mobile Unit School of Public Order Maintenance in Kitwe yesterday. The commemoration was held under the theme “10 years of hard work, discipline and dedication.” Out of the 350 officers that graduated from the school, six are deceased, six resigned from the service while one is serving a jail sentence. “We have over the past years witnessed situations where some officers have fallen prey to some politicians who have used them to their advantage. Be wary of such politicians,” she said. Ms Katanga also commended the team for building an ablution block at the school as part of their 10th anniversary commemoration. She said the contribution towards the construction of the block for the members of staff at the school would go a long way in contributing towards the smooth running of the school and service delivery. Ms Katanga said the officers had put a permanent mark in the history of the Zambia Police Service which she said would not only serve as an inspiration to the school but also to other intakes to come. Earlier, the school’s Divisional Commander, Patrick Bili, advised the officers to continue upholding discipline and professionalism if they wanted to remain relevant in the service. And intake chairperson, Enock Kambilima, said the officers had remained resolute and determined despite the challenges they had faced in the last 10 years.
Madzimawe canes ‘cry-baby’ UPND By SANFROSSA MANYINDA THE opposition should not be too pre-occupied with suspicions of the ruling party planning to rig the elections at the expense of coming up with better campaign strategies, says Chief Madzimawe. Chief Madzimawe of the Ngoni people of Eastern Province said speculations would not help any individual or
party in any way. Recently, UPND president Hakainde Hichilema complained that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) records showed that the number of registered voters in Southern Province had gone down compared to the 2016 register. Mr Hichilema wrote to the African Union and the Southern African Development Community over the matter. But Chief Madzimawe
said an interview that such complaints should be backed by evidence instead of politicians shooting in the air. "It is high time politicians understood that complaining without producing any evidence meant nothing. No one is restricted from issuing complaints but let them make sure they complain with facts every time they felt like complaining or they will be deemed irrelevant," he
said. Chief Madzimawe said the electoral process had channels which must be followed provided they had the evidence for their accusations. He wondered how the opposition could start complaining and crying foul when they had not been injured yet. Chief Madzimawe said people only needed to cry foul when they had been injured and added that accusing the opponent before the game was in no way appropriate.
Kariba Dam water levels continue to rise WATER levels at Kariba Dam have continued rising due to increased inflows coming from the Kariba upper and lower catchments, says Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) Chief Executive Officer, Munyaradzi Munodawafa. Mr Munodawafa said the water levels have increased by 25 percent since March this year. “The lake levels have increased by 1. 21 me-
ters, that is, from the level of 480.76 meters recorded on March 3, 2021 to a lake level of 481.97 meters with a live storage of 30.30 billion cubic meters recorded on April 7, 2021,” he said. He stated that water allocation for power generation at the Kariba Dam is maintained at 30 billion cubic meters shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe until a scheduled hydrological
review at the end of the second quarter of 2021. Mr Munodawafa also reiterated that the ZRA monitored river flows at gauging stations in Chavuma and Victoria Falls with water levels at Chavuma gauging station recording an increase of 1, 104 cubic meters per second closing at 3, 396 cubic meters per second. He also said the Victoria Falls gauging station
is however experiencing recession but is expected to record a second peak as per historical hydrological cycle. “We remain committed to its work of prudently managing the Kariba Dam, and will continue to monitor the hydrological outlook of the Kariba Catchment and make necessary adjustments in the reservoir operations,” he said. – ZANIS.

Vendor sprinkles fruits with urine
In a suspected use of juju, a fruits vendor at renkini Bus terminus courted the ire of fellow vendors when she was allegedly caught redhanded sprinkling her wares with urine. The incident, which is the talk of renkini terminus, happened on Saturday afternoon. The vendor was reportedly spotted by other vendors squatting and urinating in a container. Thereafter, it is said that she sprinkled fruits mainly apples and bananas with the urine. It is suspected that she is using her urine to draw clients to her stall. When reached for comment she could neither confirm nor deny the allegations but said she heard people talking about the incident? I don’t want to discuss this matter with you. I heard people talking about it and I don’t want issues bothering me since I am still mourning my relative who recently died. Please don’t write that story because Iam not feeling well and two of my relatives are also not feeling well? she said avoiding the question whether she sprinkled the fruits or not. A fellow vendor, however, confirmed the incident saying she was called by other vendors to see her in the despicable act? The rumour has been going on for some time that she is in the habit of sprinkling fruits with her urine but i had never seen her. iasked her what she was doing and why she was doing it but she could not give a satisfactory answer? the source says. ‘Satanism’ teacher chased away from new school A FEMALE teacher transferred from Chimana Secondary School following a storm over Satanism was booed, insulted and chased from her new school when she arrived to assume duty on Monday, Chipinge Times has gathered. The teacher (name supplied) had to make a hasty retreat from Musani Secondary to the bus stop as a group of villagers and pupils followed her hailing insults, booing at her and shouting out “the witch must leave”. Chipinge District Schools Inspector, Richard Gabaza said he was out of the office when contacted for comment. Sources said parents and pupils turned up once they heard that the teacher had arrived in the school. The teacher and one of her colleagues were ejected out Chimana following the death of a teacher and allegations that pupils were collapsing after seeing snakes in the classrooms.
The parents were led in the protest by Mutape Walter Mushakavanhu and Mutape Gwama. Mushakavanhu confirmed the development. He said the lady teacher was cooperative. He approached her at the school and told her that she was not wanted in the community and she allegedly nodded and said she understood and started packing her belongings ready to leave. “I talked to her and she said she would comply. Matters came to a head when she visited one of the teachers’ houses and we told her that our patience was running out. We told her to leave the place as soon as possible,” said Mushakavanhu. Mushakavanhu said that he had read about the woman in a story posted on social media by Chipinge Times. - The Mirror

HEAD TEACHER BEATS UP PARENTS
A HARARE headmaster on Thursday exchanged blows with parents in a row over school fees. Wadzanai Primary School Headmaster Peter Saunyama was arrested for fondling and beating up a female parent in Kambuzuma, a feat he said was in self-defence as the parents were heavily descending on him. Charges were withdrawn from police after Saunyama was also reported to have beaten another parent with a broom stick leading to his arrest. Some of the parents and school children booed Saunyama as police led him to a police post where statements were recorded and later released after one of his victims withdrew the charges. “Police officer asked me to go for medical report and that will cost me money so I decided to withdraw the charges against the headmaster since I want him to give us our school fees he used,” said the victim. Another victim who claimed to have been fondled on her breasts did not lodge a police report against Saunyama arguing that they fought and her fears were to be fined over the assault. “Parents besieged my office demanding receipts for the payment they made to me during lock down,” said Saunyama. “They hurled harsh words and were all over my office destroying mud cups and other items. -H METRO

The newly launched ‘ Keep Her in School Campaign’ aimed at helping vulnerable girls stay in school by providing them with sanitary towels and underwear is targeting to reach a total number of 4, 500 girls in 10 provinces. This was revealed by My Zambia, My Responsibility chairperson and founder Dr Chisoma Lombe during her organisation’s official launch of the Keep Her in School Campaign held at Latitude 15 in Lusaka last week. Dr. Lombe said the campaign mainly sponsored by Zanaco is expected to reach

450 girls in each province of Zambia. She said My Zambia, My Responsibility is a movement that requires every Zambian to be involved in unity to face a common problem. “ We in My Zambia, My Responsibility don’t believe in charity, we believe in solidarity, respect, learning and sharing from each other as a people for a common purpose of resolving a Zambian problem. Therefore, we will not allow our girl child to miss school simply because she has no underwear or sanitary towel,” she said, thanking sponsors Zanaco and Probase Group for their continued support. She also paid special gratitude to
Chembe Member of Parliament, Sebastian C. Kopulande for gracing the launch and particularly for his key involvement in ensuring no girl misses school because of lacking sanitary towels. And speaking as guest of honor, the Chembe lawmaker, said he particularly moved a private member’s motion in Parliament in 2019, urging government to provide free sanitary pads to girls in public schools in rural areas after he had observed a high school dropout rate among girls in Chembe constituency and other rural areas. The Keep Her in School Campaign is therefore projected to support girls’ stay in school by providing them with sanitary pads.

Beyoncé Has 28 Grammys: Here's What They're For They don't call her Queen Bey for nothing! The superstar currently holds the record for the most Grammys won by a woman and any singer, male or female, with a whopping 28
Lady Gaga Without a doubt, Lady Gaga is an icon. The singer is best known for her amazing voice, impressive stage presence, and wild fashion sense. She indeed likes to shock the public with her bizarre costumes, heavy makeup, and creative stage design. But the truth is that behind this stage persona of hers, a beautiful woman works hard to revolutionize the entertainment industry. We are sure that her fans would love her no matter what she looked like! If you ask us, she looks great no matter what.
After scoring two nominations for “Bills, Bills, Bills” the year prior, at the 2001 Grammys, Destiny’s Child took home two awards — both for their hit song “Say My Name.” The girl group, comprised of Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, was nominated for five awards, winning prizes for best R&B performance by a group and best R&B song. In 2002, the group was nominated again for best R&B album for Survivor and best R&B performance by a group for their song of the same name; they won the latter. In 2004, Beyoncé embarked on her solo career, scoring six nominations. She went home with five Grammys, including awards for best contemporary R&B album for Dangerously In Love, best R&B song and best rap/sung collaboration for “Crazy In Love,” best R&B performance by a duo for “The Closer I Get To You,” and best female R&B vocal performance for “Dangerously In Love 2.”
Kylie Jenner This reality TV star earned the title of the youngest self-made billionaire on the planet in 2019. She did this by launching her very own skincare brand: Kylie Skin. Despite everything, she goes through her own share of skin problems too. Without foundation, it is easier to spot the blemishes on her skin. Her face might not be flawless, but this does not change the fact that she is still a beautiful young woman.
In 2006, Beyoncé was nominated with Destiny’s Child again for their album Destiny Fulfilled and songs “Cater 2 U” and “Soldier,” but took home the prize for best R&B performance by a duo for her collaboration with Stevie Wonder on “So Amazing.” In 2007, it was “Deja Vu” for the star as she took home best contemporary R&B album for B’Day. 2010 was a huge year for the superstar! She was nominated for 10 Grammys, taking home a whopping six. She won for best contemporary album for I Am... Sasha Fierce, best female pop vocal performance for “Halo” and best traditional R&B vocal performance for “At Last.” Her song “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” took home prizes for best R&B song, best female R&B vocal performance and song of the year. The Recording Academy put their love for Bey on top, sending her home with the Grammy for best traditional R&B performance for “Love on Top.”
Kim Kardashian Is there a female celebrity more famous than Kim Kardashian at the moment? We doubt it. The social media superstar has made a name for herself as a fashionista and reality TV show star. It feels like she can pull off just any look that you can imagine when it comes to makeup. But so that you know, she is not hiding anything because her bare face is naturally beautiful already.
The queen added to her already extensive Grammy collection with three more awards in 2015. She won Grammys for best R&B performance and best R&B song for “Drunk In Love,” and an award for best surround sound album for her self-titled album. She was also nominated for album of the year, best urban contemporary album, and best music film. After suprising her fans with her Lemonade visual album, it was assumed that the star would sweep the 2017 Grammys. She was nominated for nine awards, including record and album of the year and song of the year, but only won two: best urban contemporary album and best music video for “Formation.” In 2018, Beyoncé made history as the first black woman to headline Coachella . Affectionately known as Beychella, the Queen blessed us with the ability to see it for ourselves when she when she released HΘMΣCΘMING: THE LIVE ALBUM in 2019. In 2020, she took home a Grammy for best music film for her work.
Celine Dion In the ‘80s, the world got to know a young woman by the name of Celine Dion. She has definitely come a long way from her humble roots in a small town called Charlemagne. The songstress is now considered one of the richest and most successful musicians in the world.
In 2019, the star added another Grammy to her evergrowing pile when she and husband JAY-Z won for EVERYTHING IS LOVE

Going by the moniker Shiny, this Cape Town-born star recently released her debut album, “Medicine”, which has been eight years in the making. “I recorded my first song eight years ago so it’s been a long time coming,” she explained. The 39-year old says she doesn’t want to be boxed into a specific genre and she describes her sound as “poetic pop”. “I don’t want to be defined by
a certain type of music. I love all sorts of music, if you listen to my album, it’s a mixture of all different types of music. “There’s a little bit of R&B, I even got a rave song in there, then there’s a slow song. I actually wanted to do a song in every genre. I know it sounds a bit corny but I wanted to accommodate everybody. “She’s also passionate about songwriting. “I write my own music. I enjoy writing. My love for writing comes from my love of philosophy. I love philosophy. Philosophy is life and what is life, life is love. So, yeah, that’s my passion. SADC vows ‘proportionate’ response to Mozambique’s jihadists
World 5
MAPUTO - Southern Africa's regional bloc on Thursday vowed a "proportionate" response to jihadists who last month raided a key town in northern Mozambique in a sharp escalation of a threeyear-old insurgency. Six presidents from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) held emergency talks in the Mozambican capital Maputo, two weeks after the attack on the town of Palma left dozens dead and forced thousands from their homes. The summit "affirmed that such heinous attacks cannot be allowed to continue without a proportionate regional response," the bloc said in a statement. The 16-member grouping said it was committed to contributing towards efforts to restore peace in the area but did not specify what support it was offering. It said a "technical" team would immediately be deployed to Maputo, without giving details of the tasks of the panel nor its composition. Speaking to the media after the deliberations, Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the summit, "had agreed that the SADC Force should be resuscitated and capacitated immediately
so that it can intervene." Leaders of Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe attended the meeting. Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday said the insurgents had been forced out of Palma and that his government was "evaluating" its needs for external support. Southern Africa had enjoyed relative stability compared to other regions in recent years until insurgents started battering Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province. In a coordinated attack, insurgents seized Palma, a port that lies close to a multibillion-dollar liquid natural gas (LNG) project viewed as crucial for the Mozambican economy. The assault claimed dozens of lives, according to the authorities, while the UN says more than 11, 000 were forced to flee. Total, the French energy giant behind the LNG project, has withdrawn its personnel from the site. Known locally as AlShabaab - but with no known relation to the Somali group of the same name - Cabo Delgado's jihadists have launched more than 800 raids on towns and villages in an apparent bid to establish an Islamic caliphate. – AFP.

‘TAKE YOUR PICK’ …Mogoeng asks Zuma to provide ‘appropriate sanction’ if he’s found guilty of contempt
J
OHANNESBURG - Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has asked former President Jacob Zuma to provide evidence to the Constitutional Court about what sanction he should face - if he is found guilty of contempt. Mogoeng has directed Zuma to "file an affidavit of no longer than 15 pages" by next Wednesday, in which the former head of state must detail "what constitutes the appropriate sanction" if he is "found to be guilty of the alleged contempt of court." Zuma is also directed to provide his input on "the nature and magnitude" of the prison sentence he should face - if the Constitutional Court elects to order that he face jail time for defying its ruling that he must appear before the state capture inquiry and answer its non-incriminating questions.
Should Zuma provide that affidavit, the inquiry - which is pushing for him to be imprisoned for two years for contempt - will be given a chance to respond to it. Zuma has previously stated that he was ready to go to jail to defy the Constitutional Court’s judgment against him, and the commission, which he has accused of persecuting him like the apartheid government persecuted PAC leader Robert Sobukwe. He did not participate in the commission’s application to compel him to provide it with evidence related to his nine years in office. Nor did he respond to its subsequent contempt case against him. Mogoeng did not hear the cases bought against Zuma by the commission, but all directions issued by the Constitutional Court are issued under his name – NEWS24.

Soldier who allegedly infected his partner with HIV to go on trial for attempted murder JOHANNESBURG - The criminal case against a 44-year-old soldier in the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) charged with attempted murder after allegedly knowingly and intentionally infecting his partner with HIV has been set down for trial. The accused, staff sergeant who cannot be named to protect the victim's identity, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. The case was postponed for the accused to plead to the charge of attempted murder. The plea and trial are expected to start on June 29. According to the charge sheet, being in the SANDF, the accused underwent
compulsory medical examinations, which included tests for HIV regularly. In October 2007, the accused tested positive at the SANDF sickbay in Phalaborwa. Further laboratory testing confirmed his positive status. "The accused was immediately, after the outcome of the aforesaid testing, informed by the SANDF medical staff that he was HIV positive," the charge sheet read. In 2016, the accused then became romantically involved with another soldier, who held the rank of corporal in the air force. The accused had consensual and unprotected intercourse with the victim on several occasions be-
tween December 2016 and April 2017. The State alleged the accused never revealed his HIV status to his partner during their relationship and the victim had tested negative for HIV in August 2016 before the two got romantically involved. The charge sheet further stated the victim did not have sexual intercourse with anyone from when she received her HIV report until she became involved with the accused. The State accused the soldier of intentionally attempting to kill the victim by having unprotected sexual intercourse with her, which caused her to be infected with HIV. – NEWS24.
DAR ES SALAAM - Devotha Mdachi, Director-General of the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), has been suspended pending an investigation into allegations of misuse of public funds and other resources. Her position will be held in acting capacity by Betrita James, formerly the project coordinator of Tanzania National Parks (Tanapa). Mdachi was suspended by Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Damas Ndumbaro. The decision came a few days after the office of the Controller and Auditor-General (CAG) released its report for financial year 2019/20. The report revealed massive misuse of public funds and violation of the public service code of conduct by ministry officials. CAG Charles Kichere said he did a special audit of the Ministry for Natural Resources and Tourism and found a series of unlawful payments, most of which were not factored into the budgetary allocation for that financial year. He said that in the Tourism Development Levy Fund, over Sh34.98 billion was misused, making the director of tourism and the accountant, who were involved with the management of the funds, responsible. – THE CITIZEN.

Readers Forum: The Column You Write
‘Now is my time’ Dear Editor, THE Bible instructs us that “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.” (Ecclesiastes 3 v 1). I received numerous petitions from the general membership of our great party, the Patriotic Front to step up our leadership activities by vying for a position in the central committee. Our supporters feel that taking a seat at the highest table of our party will give me an opportunity to contribute significantly to its growth. I have yielded to the call to serve and has submitted my application to contest for elections as a member of the central committee. I believe it is time. The support from mainly our youth who are demanding that I take up the role of chairman for youth is resounding but we all know that the prerogative to appoint people to sit in the central committee remains with President Edgar Lungu. I have taken the first step to offer myself for leadership and the rest will be done by the 1, 000 delegates at this weekend’s general conference by voting for me.
My journey in politics is well documented and the work I have done over the years in representing the youth cannot be downplayed.
I believe it is time The support from mainly our youth who are demanding that I take up the role of chairman for youth is resounding but we all know that the prerogative to appoint people to sit in the central committee remains with President Edgar Lungu. I believe that what defines a true member of any organisation is their loyalty and my loyalty to the party and President Lungu cannot be questioned. If elected, I will work hard to help create a PF that will serve the ordinary members of the party and one that governs according to the true expectations of the people. BOWMAN CHILOSHA LUSAMBO.
Choosing credible leadership
Dear Editor, THE Patriotic Front central committee is one of, if not the most powerful organ of the party and it’s not surprising to see the overwhelming response that it has received from the arty faithfuls who have put themselves up for consideration at this convention. Against that background, and motivated by the belief that the only condition necessary for mistakes and wrong things to happen, is the silence of those whose opinions may offer some valuable guidance to either prevent or mitigate a disaster before it takes place.
I therefore put this thought across as a contribution to the convention at this last minute or forever hold my peace. According to the PF constitution, the central committee has about 19 key functions but my interest is on function (a) Supervising the implementation of the party policies and programmes; (b) Programming party policies as formulated by the general conference or the National Council; and (h) Orientating and controlling activities of the central organs of the State and other public institutions in the country; When you look at these
Happy Easter to you all my friends! Dear Editor, AS we celebrate this day, remember that it teaches us about betrayal and offers lessons from Jesus’ actions on the need to love one another. We need to stop our evil ways of character assassinations, backbiting, PhD syndrome when we don’t even have Grade 12 certificates and lies! We have no place in church today if we continue with such ways as a society because we are no better than Brethren Judas Iscariot. When you go and lie about a person to other people, you kill other people’s dreams, lives, lives of their children and dependants. What looks as a small thing actually has larger implications! We are good at killing each oth-
Judas thought it was just a few pieces of silver but his actions led to a bigger thing. Even us we might think, let’s just dent his image to kill his ambitions. But what we don’t know is that such actions rob lives from many who might be anchored around that person.
er’s dreams in this country. We rob other people’s lives, dreams and livelihoods just by simple lies be it in church, places of work or just in society. Judas thought it was just a few pieces of silver but his actions led to a bigger thing. Even us we might think, let’s just dent his image to kill his ambitions. But what we don’t know is that such actions rob lives from many who might be anchored around that person. Just like Jesus forgave Judas, today we need to forgive one another and change our ways otherwise Friday and Monday should be working days because we shall continue glorifying Judas and not Jesus if we celebrate Easter but not change our ways... Dr LUBINDA HAABAZOKA
functions clearly, you will understand that the central committee or a party’s politburo is where proper power to govern is kept. Considering that the President is the head of the organ and Cabinet is subservient to it, therefore those that put themselves up for consideration must be men and women who have the spine to carry the weight of the country on their shoulders. Having an ambition is a good thing but an ambition without direction is a good combination when preparing for disaster. The PF being a progressive party is definitely
not headed for disaster. Therefore I appeal to colleagues and friends who have submitted their applications and those who will deliberate over the candidates to look beyond the face, name and creed. Our focus should be on the value that individuals bring to the table. Those who have the capacity to hold us together are key, those who can make us grow are needed and those who have the intricate understanding of where we are going are the ones we need at this critical moment in the life of this party. Therefore, the Presidents’ list will be a key pathway in this exercise as his wise leadership has gotten us this far. DANIEL BUKALI.

Chizyuka, who has continuously denied any wrong doing could not change his plea even after listening to evidence against him from the six witnesses presented to the court by Anti-Corruption Commission State Advocate Virginia Tembo. But after Choma Principal Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo went through all the State’s evidence, she found it incumbent that Chizyuka gives his side of the story as the evidence against him was overwhelming. She found Chizyuka with a case to answer and put him on his defence after the state established a prima facie case against him. The matter was adjourned to April 13, 2021 for continued defence. Chizyuka had his police bond extended.

He said the following day, he escorted Mr Kabuno to report the matter at Westhood police station.

filed by three boys and was able to identity one of them. He said he gave her mother a medical report to go to the nearest hospital for medical attention. He said the girl also led him to a makeshift shop where she was allegedly defiled. He said he interviewed the marketeers and they informed him that they were not trading at the time the incident happened. He said he summoned the boy and interviewed him and he denied having had sex with the girl. He said because the boy did not give him a satisfactory answer, he charged and arrested him for the offence of defilement. Under cross examination, Mr. Mwewa said he charged and arrested the boy because he was the only one identified. He said he was unable to trace the other two boys because the victim did not know who they were and where they lived.
A 13-YEAR-OLD girl has narrated in the magistrate’s court how a man allegedly stole various items from her father’s house. This is in a case in which Alfred Mumba of Kabangwe is charged with one count of theft contrary to the laws of Zambia. Case particulars were that Mumba in October 2020 broke into the house of Mr Clement Simasiku and stole suits, a container of cooking oil and other documents. The matter came up for continued trial before magistrate Nsunge Chanda. The girl said on the material day, she and her sister went to church in the morning. She said when they returned in the evening, the main door to their house was wide open. She said they went inside thinking
that their dad was around. She said she called out his name and because he did not respond, she went to check in his bedroom. She said his suits, a bag, a container of cooking and other
items were missing and wondered if her dad had moved the items. She said when he arrived home, he asked her where the items had been put and told him she did not know.
She said he asked her to ask Chola who was building the toilet outside. But because it was late, she decided to ask the man the following morning. She said Chola told her that he saw Mumba with the same bag she had described to have been stolen. She said she and her father approached Mumba and he told them that he sold the suits, bag and container of cooking oil in Chibolya. He said Mumba told them that he was going to give them a cheque to replace the stolen things. She said her father took Mumba to the police station. Under cross examination by Mumba, the girl said Mumba admitted being with a friend but they could not locate him. She said Mumba insisted that he had sold the items.
