A GRAVE SITUATION
ZAMBIA is engulfed in a serious battle against the coronavirus, which has resurfaced in a more virulent manner. The new strain of the Covid-19 is severe and the statistics speak to this. The health system is clearly strained and getting overwhelmed with the number of patients turning up with coronavirus. Be it at government general, level one hospitals or simply the clinics, the situation is grave and unless something is done to stem the upswing, the country will fail to cope. Our health systems do not have enough bed capacity for starters to deal with the high number of patients turning up at health facilities for treatment for mostly Covid-19. Yesterday, the country recorded 18 Covid-19 deaths, the highest since the country was hit by the virus in March last year. The country also recorded the highest number of cases in 24 hours with 1, 029 infected out of 11, 855 tests conducted. The cumulative cases as at yesterday were 25, 326 out of which 20, 349 are recoveries. The total number of deaths are at 441, according to an update given yesterday by the Minister of Health, Dr. Chitalu Chilufya. If nothing else can jolt the nation into action, it should be these alarming statistics. This is a serious indictment that the country is not following the Covid prevention measures as set out by the Ministry of Health. This is a dangerous path that the country is on, especially that now we are faced with a more dangerous variant of the Covid-19. The new strain is not only more infectious, but moves faster and hence the high mortality rate. Health personnel have testified that the scenario is more terrifying for those on the frontline because they are witness to the lives being lost. They are also witness to the struggle that patients are going through. Yesterday, Dr. Chilufya said President Edgar Lungu had directed the Secretary to the Cabinet, Dr. Simon Miti to develop a new work arrangements in the public service that will see some employees work from home to curb the pandemic. This is all part of efforts to find ways of containing the pandemic so that it can be fought effectively. The government, like it did last year, wants to ensure that social distancing is practiced at all levels. This means work places should have reduced numbers in the office while allowing people to work from home. It also means no public gatherings. The other measures which may need more political will to enforce include the need for people to wear masks in public places such as in shopping malls, markets, bus stations and on all vehicles, private and public alike. Once police officers get on the ground and start enforcing this, people will get used and start masking up. Some stiff penalties for those failing to comply, will send the right message to society. For public service vehicles, the failure to comply with safety measures should lead to buses or taxis being impounded. That way, the driver and conductor will feel the pinch where it matters most. Loss of income is not something that they would want to risk by allowing passengers without masks on their buses. Furthermore, the government should ensure the sensitisation messages are translated into local languages so that the communication is effective. The sensitisation message should also include the need to change some cultural norms such as handshakes. If every Zambian makes a real effort to observe the Covid prevention measures, the battle will have been won. The opposite will unfortunately send so many people to the grave. This is indeed a grave situation the nation is face with.

PARENTS OBJECT TO SCHOOLS OPENING AMID SPIKE IN COVID CASES By KALOBWE BWALYA and SIMON MUNTEMBA
S
OME parents have objected to the Ministry of General Education’s decision to open schools next week fearing the impact it would have on Covid-19 cases which keep rising and more deaths are recorded. In an interview yesterday, Ms Matilda Longwe of Mtendere Township in Lusaka quetioned why the ministry was rushing to open the schools when Covid cases were rising. Ms Longwe said the ministry should just wait and allow time for an assesment of the situation and trajectory of infections witnessed in the recent past. Ms Longwe said the Covid-19 pandemic was deadly, and government should take stringent measures to ensure that safety measures had been put in place at all learning institutions.
Dr Kalumba
Another parent, Ms Charity Mtonga said last year when Zambia recorded the first two cases of Covid-19, the President was very quick to close schools and learning resumed after they had put everything in order. She said Government must not hurry to open schools next week because if they go ahead, then they should expect a disaster in the country.
Ms Mtonga said even if there are examination classes that would be sitting for their examinations this year, there is need for the government to just revise the school curriculum calendar. “As a parent I am very concerned and against the idea of Government wanting to open schools despite seeing the rise in infections and how people are dying, it does not matter even if schools open late for the sake of ssving many lives, said Ms Mtonga. However, General Education Permanent Secretary Jobbicks Kalumba has said schools would be opened next Monday because they are the safest places for learners, Speaking on ZNBC’s Sunday Interview, Dr Kalumba said the problem was in the homes where there was little adherence to Covid-19 guidelines and not in schools. He maintained that learning institutions were the safest places for learners despite the surging cases of Covid-19.
“Schools are safer than homes. They are safest so far. The problem of non-adherence is at homes not school,” he said. Dr Kalumba said that there was no single case that was recorded among learners countrywide. He said every step had been taken to guarantee the safety of pupils in schools, adding that he would meet with his counterpart at the Ministry of Health, Dr Kennedy Malama to see how they would work together to provide the safety of learners. He said the school calendar would not be disturbed as long as all learning institutions continued to adhere to Covid-19 health guidelines. “We don’t want to close the schools again because last year, more than a thousand girls became pregnant due to closure of schools as a result of Covid-19,” he said. He also said Government had procured enough computers for secondary schools which were being distributed.
Court warns State in PIA bosses case Substandard condoms recalled By CHARLES MUSONDA
THE Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has warned the State to put its house in order in a case Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA) Registrar Christopher Mapani is charged with two others for alleged abuse of authority of office. In this case, Mapani, 44, of 393/35 Meanwood Airport, has been jointly charged with insurance regulator Nicholas Mbiya, 50, of 141, Ngwerere Avenue, Chelstone, and financial sector registrar Titus Mkhwale , 45, of 25731, Woodlands, all in Lusaka. Particulars of the offence in the first count are that between January 1, 2018 and March 30, 2020 in Lusaka, the three as public officers directly or indirectly abused their position, office, or authority by approving Tobias Milambo as the principal officer for Ultimate Insurance Company, an arbitrary act prejudicial to the rights or interests of the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) or any other person. In the second count particulars of offence are that between the same dates the three abused authority of their office
by issuing a 2020 insurers’ licence to Ultimate Insurance Company Limited, an arbitrary act prejudicial to the rights or interest of the government or any other person. When the case came up yesterday for commencement of trial before Magistrate Felix Kaoma, public prosecutor Jordan Busiku informed the court that the State was not ready to proceed because there were no witnesses present. Mr. Busiku also informed Mr. Kaoma that his fellow prosecutor handling the case had been assigned to prosecute matters in the criminal session that opened in the High Court yesterday. In response, defence lawyer James Mataliro said as the record would show, adjournments in the case had been occasioned by the State. In his ruling Mr. Kaoma reluctantly granted the adjournment and warned the State to put its house in order failure to which he will be left with no option but to dismiss the case for want of prosecution. He told the State to take the warning seriously after which he adjourned the case to tomorrow for mention and fixing of trial dates; and extended police bond for all the defendants.
I am innocent - Kalimanshi By CHARLES MUSONDA PATRIOTIC Front cadre Innocent Kalimanshi has denied one count of defaming Home Affairs minister Stephen Kampyongo. Kalimanshi, 40, who is also a businessman of house number 2 Leopards Hill Road in Lusaka, denied the charge before Magistrate Felix Kaoma yesterday. Kalimanshi was supposed to take plea last Wednesday but he was absent from court as he was reportedly involved in a road traffic accident a few
days before. In this case, particulars of offence are that on November 8, 2020 in Lusaka, Kalimanshi unlawfully published a defamatory matter affecting Mr. Kampyongo in form of a WhatsApp message. Kalimanshi is alleged to have said that when President Lungu decided to drop one position of PF national youth chairman from Mr. Kampyongo and gave it to Kasama Central member of Parliament Kelvin Sampa, the minister was annoyed and sent him (Kalimanshi) to start saying bad things against Mr. Sampa.
The accused person is also alleged to have said that when he was arrested for assault and was in custody, Mr. Kampyongo instructed the police to deny him bond and that the minister took a sack of sausages to criminal investigations officer a Mr. Musonda. Kalimanshi is also accused of saying that when he was in Johannesburg, South Africa, Mr. Kampyongo sent some unknown people to kill him on unknown dates. The court has set February 19, 2021 as date for commencement of trial

MINISTER IN LAND ROW From Page 1 At a recent meeting on Sunday, Ms Phiri reportedly refused to let go of the land unless she was compensated by the Chongwe council as she has spent a lot to develop the land. And Ms. Phiri who confirmed meeting the residents’ committee told the Daily Nation that she was ready to give up the land if the community insists on getting it but insisted that this can only happen if she is compensated. Ms Phiri has pleaded with the community of Silverest area in Ntandabale ward of Chongwe to accept her as one of their own amid a feud over land she is alleged to have grabbed from them. Speaking during an interview, Silverest residents’ association committee chairperson Mr. Kelly Nswana disclosed that the minister asked the community to consider calling off the stand-off between her and the community. He said that the minister made the appeal during a meeting with the committee on Sunday afternoon. He said that she claimed that she genuinely acquired the land in dispute and had spent a fortune on it. He disclosed that the minister asked for understanding from the community whom she said were hostile to her. He revealed that she indicated that she would only give up the land on condition that she is compensated for the cost of the developments on the land.
He however stressed that the minister should have been honourable enough by giving up the land as she has another piece of land in the same area. “How can she hold on to this piece of land when she has another piece of land where she has built a house while the community clinic remains a pipe dream,” Mr. Nswana asked. He said the local authority had made it clear that it had not given her authority to develop and as such they were better placed to say whether her compensation claim would be justified. Mr. Nswana also disclosed that the community had vowed to cling on to the piece of land as it was originally theirs. He was quick to point out that the land in question was the biggest single plot in the area and was centrally located, making it an ideal location for a public amenity such as a clinic. He also welcomed the decision by the council to find alternative land for the minister as the land dispute has dragged on for far too long and as such had to come to an end. He said that this has hindered the construction of a clinic thereby making life unbearable for the community. Meanwhile, Chongwe municipal council Director legal services, Namakau Sumbwa declined to comment and referred all queries to the town clerk. However the town clerk could not be reached by press time.

HE sacking of minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya by President Edgar Lungu must now send a positive and strong signals to all public service workers who betray public trust, says Medical Quality for Health Care in Zambia (MQHZ) director-general Dr Quince Mwabu. Dr Mwabu has also called on President Lungu to extend the axe to the two Permanent Secretaries of Health Dr Kennedy Malama and Kakulubelwa Mulalelo and directors at ZAMRA due to their incompetency and negligence. Muchinga Province Information and Publicity Secretary Kizito Chilamo the partnership between DP and UPND was not based on principle but mere a appetite for power. He said the pact was bound to fail because Harry Kalaba did not have the clout he was being credited with. Mr Chilamo also said UPND and DP had never had any successful alliance with any political party.
He said the PF in the region was not shaken by the DP, UPND alliance. “The deal between HH and Kalaba is nothing but a marriage of convenience whose agenda will not succeed,” Mr Chilamo said. Mr Chilamo said schemes by the two desperate politicians to dismantle PF in Muchinga, Northern and Luapula Provinces would not succeed because people in the region have already resolved to continue supporting President Edgar Lungu. IT will be very difficult for Hakainde Hichilema to find a credible running mate for this year's elections, PF member of the central committee, Kebby Mbewe has claimed. Mr Mbewe said in an interview that there is no credible politician who would risk working with Mr Hichilema,
the UPND president as a running mate because of previous experiences. He said no one was willing to be running mate to Mr Hichilema after seeing the high turnover of UPND vice-presidents that were used and discarded. Mr Mbewe said a chronological account of the individuals who held the post of UPND vice president and left unceremoniously was there for all to see.
the ministry, but further called on President Lungu to fire everyone who was involved in the scandal so that they can face the law together. Dr Mwabu said, the sacking of Dr Chilufya was long overdue as the ministry was a very sensitive institution which needed serious administrators to run its affairs. He is hoping that, after the sacking of Dr Chilufya, harmony and confidence would be restored at the ministry. Dr Mwabu said President Lungu’s move should be commended for taking such an action following the scandal at the ministry. He said it was unacceptable that the two permanent secretaries had no idea on who authorised the distribution of the defective medical kits to the public. Dr Mwabu said as an or-
ganisation that promoted quality healthcare in the country, they would not sit idle and watch people who are entrusted to run the affairs of the country disregard matters that affected the lives of the people. Meanwhile, Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDZ) has welcomed the appointment of Dr Jonas Chanda as Minister of Health. RDZ president Dr Isaac Sakala has commended the President for taking such a bold move to save the image of the health sector. Dr Sakala said, while it would require more to regain the confidence of the public in the sector, this was a big step as it shows government’s commitment to its obligation to keep the Zambian people safe. And ActionAid Zambia has called on President Edgar
Lungu to also fire Ministry of Health Permanent Secretaries and their two Directors at Medical Stores Ltd and Zambia Medicines and Regulations Authority for incompetency and negligence in the honeybee scandal. ActionAid Zambia Country Director, Nalucha Ziba said President Lungu should extend his axe to the two permanent secretaries Kennedy Malama who is in charge of technical services and Ms Kakulubelwa Mulalelo. “We demand that all those involved in this case be equally be relieved of duties,” Ms Ziba said. “We want to emphasize that prosecution is a major tool in the fight against corruption as it ensures that corrupt offenders are severely punished to deter would be offenders,”She said

Lungu warns Ministers From Page 1
“Your role is policy formulation in your ministry,” he said during the swearing in ceremony of nominated MP Raphael Nakacinda as Minister of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection at State House yesterday. Mr Nakacinda’s appointment follows Health Minister Dr Chitalu Chilufya’s dismissal on Sunday. President Lungu implored Mr Nakacinda to focus on reviewing policies and programmes with a view to increasing investment in infrastructure development for water, sanitation and the environment. This, he said, was a means to widen access to water and also reach the target of universal access by 2030. He urged Mr Nakacinda to double efforts in implementing policies that would open up areas of investment through public private partnerships in the sector. “I am also aware that your ministry is working closely with various cooperating partners in implementing projects and programmes focused on increasing ac-

OVERNMENT will recruit more teachers this year to reduce the human resource shortage, General Education Permanent Secretary Jobbicks Kalumba has said. The ministry recently disclosed that the country has 50, 000 unemployed graduate
teachers. Dr Kalumba, who could not disclose the number of teachers to be recruited, said Government was keen to ensure that the human resource crisis in the education sector was reduced. He said Government would secure resources for the deployment of the teachers this year. He said that Government
would not relent on this particular matter because more teachers were needed in areas where there was a deficit. “We are keen to ensure that the recruitment of teachers is done this year. But what I can say is that I cannot tell how many teachers will be deployed this year. All I know is that we shall employ the teachers because we want to ensure
that the deficit which is there can be reduced. “I know that President Edgar Lungu is on firm ground to ensure that resources are available to employ teachers so that we have more men and women who can advance the learning system in the country,” Dr Kalumba said. Recently, Minister of General Education, Dennis Wachin-
ga, said the country had 50, 000 unemployed teachers and hinted that Government was considering suspending the admission of students into colleges to curb the high number of unemployed teachers on the streets. He said there was no need of admitting teachers into training institutions when many of them were unemployed.

Increased juvenile cases worry Judiciary By GRACE CHAILELESOETSA
LUSAKA High Court judge in-charge Gertrude Chawatama says the judges have disposed of over 4, 260 cases out of the 4, 676 cases in backlog as at December 31, 2020. And Ms Justice Chawatama bemoaned the increased number of juveniles appearing before the courts for serious offences. Speaking during the ceremonial opening of the criminal session in Lusaka at the Supreme/High Court complex, Ms Justice Chawatama commended the taskforce set up to dismantle cases in a systematic manner for working hard to ensure the task was achieved. "From the 4, 676 cases in backlog, the judges disposed of over 4, 260 cases as at December 31, 2020. A job well done," she said. Ms Justice Chawatama said the judges were concerned with the number of juveniles appearing before them for serious offences. "We have wondered what is happening in the family government. Family government headed by parents who have a duty to bring up children in the fear of the Lord. Why are so many of our children appearing before our courts, and often for very serious offences," she said.

Kariba water levels rise steadily

ZEMA APPROVES $1.3BN MINING PROJECTS By KETRA KALUNGA
By ANDREW MUKOMA THE water levels in the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA)-administered, Kariba Dam has continued to rise steadily. According to ZRA, the lake level, which should generally be decreasing at this time of the year, has continued to rise steadily. ZRA has attributed the development to the earlier than usual rise in inflows
from the immediate Kariba Lower Catchment, closing at 478.43m (20.44 per cent usable storage) on January 7, this yearcompared to 476.62m (7.77 per cent usable storage) recorded on the same date last year. The Kariba Lake is designed to operate between levels 475.50m and 488.50m (with 0.70m freeboard) for hydropower generation. This is contained in the weekly update the Authority has issued.
THE Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) assessed 54 mining projects worth US$ 1.304 billion in the third quarter of 2020. ZEMA acting manager corporate affairs, Friday Phiri, said the 54 projects were part of the 212 projects under the Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) category submitted for assessment. Mr Phiri said in an interview that mining presents the largest current and future environmental liabilities as it has continued to receive huge investments.
He however said ZEMA would ensure that the environment was safeguarded in the communities that are near the mines. Mr Phiri said that the set conditions regarding mining operations relate to strict adherence to the guidelines aimed at preventing air and water pollution in communities as a result of the mining activities. He said the mining firms that polluted the air and water were liable for payment of the appropriate compensation and other forms of relief or replacement. “More often than not, where it is determined that the health of people, proper-
M’membe denies duping Bemba chief By KETRA KALUNGA SOCIALIST Party President, Fred M’membe, has denied acquiring land from a chief of Shiwang’andu using deceitful means. Sub-chief Chama Nkulungwe of Mwika Royal village said Mr M’membe in 2016 asked him for a piece of land and promised that he would build him a house, a clinic, and a school for the villagers. Chief Mukwikile said in an interview that to date the people in Mwika royal village including sub-chief Nkulungwe got nothing from Mr M’membe despite the promise.
Mr M’membe
But Mr M’membe said in an interview that he owns no land as an individual in Mwi-
ka village because the land in question is owned by a family. He said it was not possible
for any chief to allocate him land in the village because the land belongs to him and his family. Mr M’membe added that the families who were part of the land included some of the most senior chiefs in Lubemba who have origins in Mwika Royal Village. “What is there is communal family land which belongs to me and all my relatives collectively. So it is not possible for any chief to allocate me land in that village in any way, no one in that village owns the land,” he said.

Mr Phiri said ZEMA has developed a continuous environmental monitoring system (CEMS), an online-based system which would store data and an online application of environmental permits and submission of statutory returns. Capitalise on high copper prices - Dodia AN ECONOMIC Analyst Yusuf Dodia says a rise in copper prices is good news for a commodity-driven country like Zambia as there will be more foreign currency. Mr Dodia said more foreign exchange will translate into an appreciation of the Kwacha when it makes imports cheaper, thereby, translating into lower overall prices. Mr Dodia said in an interview that the increase in copper prices will also generate resources that will help to service the debt crisis the country is facing and replicate in capital infrastructure development. “Copper prices have now reached high levels of around US$8000 a ton ,that means the mining industry in 2021 is likely to export million tons of copper representing US$ 8 billion of export earnings,” Mr Dodia explained. Mr Dodia stressed that export earnings will be a mechanism for the Government to collect enough taxes from tax payers that will help to finance the 2021 budget.

DON’T ALLOW REFINED OIL IMPORTS, INSISTS ZNFU By BUUMBA CHIMBULU
T
HE Zambia National Framers Union (ZNFU) has urged Government not to allow the importation of refined cooking oil as the country has grown sufficient soya beans for the production of the commodity. ZNFU has also warned against listing importation of wheat under the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA) as it will damage the sub-sector in the country. Government should ensure that it enforces the rule of not bringing in refined cooking oil because that damages the growth of the oil seeds, said ZNFU president, Jervis Zimba
in an interview. Mr Zimba said ZNFU was aware that there were some businesses that were forcing Government to bring in refined cooking oil which was of no benefit to the country other than themselves. He said Government should not bend to demands as doing so would lead to local farmers losing out. “We are aware of some people pushing for the importation of refined cooking oil so that they can benefit. This is very sad and unfair as it disadvantaged the local market and farmers. “So far, Government has been with us on this matter because we have advised them that refined cooking oil Saturday 25 April, 2020
should not come in the country unless as crude oil,” Mr Zimba said. ZNFU, Mr Zimba said, was so far happy with the crop diversification this year as there seemed to be a good and unprecedented crop of soya beans. He explained that many farmers had grown soya beans and that depending on how the season would end, ZNFU hoped to have a good crop. “All we want is that we must grow local. President Edgar Lungu gave a directive that he wants to see the agriculture sector diversified so we are happy that the farmers have grown quite a lot of groundnuts which are designated for exports and also soya beans.
“If we grow more this year, we will still allow some to be exported like we did last year, we allowed some to be exported which brings in foreign exchange,” Mr Zimba said. Meanwhile, Mr Zimba urged Government not to list importation of wheat under the ACFTA as it would damage the sub-sector in Zambia. “Bringing in flour through the ACFTA, if we are not careful this will be the end of the wheat sector in Zambia, it will be damaged. “Our advice is that they should not sign the sector under the agreement otherwise we will be in a mess as a country. They should not put flour on the agreement," Mr Zimba said.
MAKING the right investments now is vital to support the recovery when it is urgently needed and foster resilience, says David Malpass, president of World Bank Group. Mr Malpass said the response to the pandemic crisis today would shape the common future for years to come. "We should seize the opportunity to lay the foundations for a durable, equitable, and sustainable global economy," he said in a January 2021 world economic report. Mr Malpass observed that investment collapsed in 2020 in many emerging market and developing economies, following a decade of persistent weakness. He said investment growth was expected to resume in 2021, but, despite an uplift from advances in digital technology, not add enough to reverse the large 2020 decline. "The experience of past crises raises a further concern—without urgent course correction, investment could remain feeble for years to come," he said. Mr Malpass said in both the external and internal
debt resolution processes, transparency was critical to bolster accountability, make future investment and debt more productive, and support the economic recoveries that were crucial for poverty reduction. Left unaddressed, Mr Malpass warned, the problem of unsustainable debt, and restructurings that did too little, would delay vital recoveries, especially in the poorest countries. He further said mounting climate and environmental challenges added to the urgency of policy action, including on debt reduction and an improved investment framework. Mr Malpass said as countries formulate policies for recovery, they had a chance to embark on a greener, smarter, and more equitable development path.

Zim gold deliveries tumble nearly a third to 19 tonnes in 2020 HARARE - Gold sales to Zimbabwe’s sole buyer and exporter of bullion Fidelity Printers and Refiners (FPR) fell 31 percent to 19 tonnes last year after lower deliveries from small-scale miners, official data showed on Monday. FPR pays US dollars in cash to small-scale gold miners, but a shortage of hard cash caused delays in payments most of last year. That forced many of the miners to sell their gold to illegal buyers, industry officials say. Deliveries of gold, the top foreign currency earner, have been on the decline since reaching a record 33.2 tonnes 2018, mainly due to delays by FPR in paying miners. The central bank last month announced plans to unbundle FPR into two separate companies and sell a majority stake in the new gold refinery business to miners, in a bid to boost output. FPR data showed that total gold deliveries fell to 19.05 tonnes from 27.66 tonnes in 2019. Small-scale producers sold only 9.35 tonnes last year compared with 17.48 tonnes in 2019. The government says gold worth at least $1.2 billion is illegally exported from the country annually. Last month, Zimbabwe
banned the use of mercury in mining, which could further curtail output in the short term from the small-scale sector, which is the major user of the toxic metal when extracting gold. Meanwhile, Gold fell to extend the biggest drop in two months amid gains in the dollar and Treasury yields, with investors also weighing President-elect Joe Biden’s pledge to detail plans for huge US economic aid. Bullion endured a switchback week as January got under way, with early gains getting overturned as the surge in Treasury yields damped the appeal of the noninterest bearing asset. That’s come as the dollar recovered from its lowest level in almost three years. On Monday, prices sank, then pared losses. Gold posted the biggest annual rise in a decade last year as the pandemic ripped through the global economy, and central banks and governments boosted stimulus. With vaccines getting rolled out, traders are weighing up the haven’s prospects over 2021, assessing drivers including the outlook for further massive support, shifts in inflation expectations, and appetite for risk. – REUTERS/ BLOOMBERG NEWS.
Second Australian charged over Iraqi oil bribes scandal SIYDNEY - Australian police yesterday charged a man in connection with allegations that a Sydney-based firm paid US$78 million in bribes to secure lucrative Iraqi oil contracts. The man, who was not named by police, was identified in media reports as former Leighton Holdings executive David Savage. Police said a 60-year-old was charged with two counts of knowingly providing misleading information contrary to the Corporations Act. He was arrested on his release from 14 days in hotel quarantine after returning to Australia from France. Investigators allege Leighton Offshore, an international arm of Leighton Holdings, funnelled bribes through contractors including Monaco-based Unaoil to secure two oil pipeline construction contracts worth almost US$1.5 billion. In 2019, two former senior Unaoil executives pleaded guilty to being part of a scheme to bribe foreign government officials in several countries including Azerbaijan, Syria and Iraq. The latest Australian arrest comes two months after a 54-year-old man was charged with foreign bribery offences in connection to the Leighton allegations. The Australian Federal Police said Iraqi Ministry of Oil officials and government officials within the South Oil Company of Iraq were targeted in the scheme. Their nine-year investigation, working with US and UK police, has also resulted in an arrest warrant for a third man who is believed to be overseas. – AFP.
SA GOES FOR EXPATS’ TAX
…SARS' ability to track down elusive SA expatriates to be enhanced from March
J
OHANNESBURG - The time for hiding their heads in the sand about tax is over for South African expatriates, says Jonty Leon, legal manager at Tax Consulting SA. South Africans living or working abroad can no longer "avoid" the long arm of the SA Revenue Service. Stricter legislation to back its efforts to collect taxes and an emerging system of global financial data sharing increases SARS' ability to detect taxpayers who historically "flew under its radar." "Under pressure to meet its revenue quotas, SARS has started auditing the country's non-compliant expatriates in earnest. We have been warning expatriates that this was coming and now that it's here," says Leon. "The safest route to remove ambiguity on tax residency status is to follow the formal financial emigration process. This process is being changed and a new more stringent regime will be implemented from March 1, 2021."
South Africans living or working abroad can no longer “avoid” the long arm of SARS. He advises South Africans intending to relocate to another country to follow the formal exit procedures and, most importantly, ensure their tax affairs are in order beforehand. He also advises that those who have already left permanently, should ensure they have done so in a compliant manner, and have had themselves noted as non-resident for tax purposes. Whether a South African must declare their worldwide income and pay tax on it to SARS is determined by their tax
residency status, not their physical location or period outside the country. "Tax residency of South Africa is not determined solely on the amount of time spent in the country. This is a far more complex issue which must be technically dealt with in terms of the law," explains Leon. "This may come as a shock to those who believe that, once they set foot on foreign soil, they are free from any further tax obligation to South Africa. More so for those who left the country without settling their tax debt,
‘Africa big stage for cooperation, not arena for competition’ ABUJA - Africa is a big stage for international cooperation, not an arena for competition between great powers, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said. Wang made the remarks at a joint press conference here with Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama during his official visit to Nigeria. Wang noted that China-Africa friendship has withstood the test of time and grown even stronger than before. As early as when Africa was striving for national independence and liberation, China and Africa were comrades-in-arms sharing a common destiny and
forged a profound friendship, he said, adding that China and Africa are partners for win-win cooperation at a time when Africa is developing and revitalising its economy. Noting that China never attaches any political strings in its assistance to Africa, let alone interferes in Africa’s internal affairs, Wang said that when Africa faced difficulties, China felt for Africa and lent a helping hand as early as possible. Since the establishment of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) 20 years ago, China-Africa trade volume and China’s investment stock in Africa have increased by 20
times and 100 times respectively, Wang said. China has built over 6 000km of railways and roads respectively, nearly 20 ports and over 80 large electric power facilities, and constructed over 130 medical facilities, 45 sports stadiums and over 170 schools across Africa. Besides, China has sent 21,000 medical workers to 48 African countries and treated about 220 million African patients, he said. Wang said the achievements of China-Africa cooperation have spread across Africa, bringing remarkable changes to local economic and social de-
Money market yields to remain strained HARARE - Zimbabwe’s money markets could continue to under-perform going forward as authorities keep a tight leash on interest rates. Due to sub-inflation interest rates, money market assets in the country have generally lost value over time. Just last week, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) announced that it was maintaining the bank policy and medium-term lending rates at 35 and 25 percent, respectively. The bank policy rate current-
ly stands at 35 percent, after it more than doubled from 15 percent in October 2019. The policy rate or overnight accommodation rate had earlier been increased from 15 percent to 50 percent in June and 70 percent in October 2019, before the rate was cut down to 35 percent. The interest rate (amount of interest due per period, as a proportion of the amount lent, deposited or borrowed) is a critical economic component insofar as it has an impact - either
positive or negative - on the cost of borrowing and return on savings. It is also significant with regard to the total return on numerous investments. But with latest official statistics showing that the country’s annual inflation closed at 401.66 percent in November 2020, it renders yields from money market instruments almost insignificant. This also applies to Government-issued Treasury Bills (TBs), whose average interest
even if they have been gone for decades." Changes to the expatriate tax laws came into effect on March 1, 2020, soon after SARS launched its dedicated Foreign Employment Unit, which is focused on South Africans working abroad. SARS has begun a twopronged attack strategy, according to Leon. Firstly, the tax agency calls audits on individual expatriates, wanting them to prove they are non-residents and justify their intentions. Some audits call for proof that the taxpayer had obtained an Emigration Tax Clearance Certificate when leaving South Africa. Secondly, SARS calls audits on offshore income revealed through the common reporting standard. According to Leon, this comes as no surprise, as SARS is targeting those who have historically been able to "hide" assets and funds. This "hiding" of funds will no longer be possible due to the exchange of information between jurisdictions. – FIN24.
velopment and making important contributions to improving the lives of the African people. China’s unremitting efforts to this end cannot be smeared, and the hard work of Chinese engineers, technicians and medical team members cannot be ignored, Wang added. China-Africa cooperation has become a pioneer in international cooperation with Africa, and has promoted other countries to pay more attention to Africa and increase their investment in Africa, Wang said, adding that this is a good thing for Africa, and as a friend of Africa, China is also happy about it. The international community has a shared responsibility to support Africa’s development, Wang said, noting that all countries should cooperate with Africa on the premise of respecting Africa’s sovereignty and listening to Africa’s voices. – XINHUA. rate has been below 20 percent. In a note on the December 2020 performance of its money market unit trust Old Mutual cautioned that money growth could push interest rates lower in the new year. “Monetary policy was relatively accommodative during the month ended 31 December 2020. In context, reserve money balances grew by a noteworthy 24.3 percent during the week ended December 18, 2020. – The HERALD, Zimbabwe.

Because of this conducive environment many people far and beyond have expressed interest to be adopted to contest various positions in the country. The PF has shown beyond reasonable doubt in so many ways that they have embraced democracy wholeheartedly. Because of this conducive environment many people far and beyond have expressed interest to be adopted to contest various positions in the country. This has created a situation where there is more than one
person declaring interest to be adopted to contest one position. In some cases, I have heard of three or even four people or more. This is interesting because at the end of the day only one person will be adopted. This calls for all those contesting whether incumbent or new comers to realise this fact and put on their shock absorbers to avoid being disappointed and depressed. Only one person will be adopted because only one person can be adopted at a time on each position. Those who will not be adopted must accept the development and support the adopted candidates because it may not be their time and their time will come one day in the future if it was meant to be that way. As you declare interest also have this situation in mind and prepare well long in advance because that is a bitter reality that many may not be ready to experience. It is not the end but may be even preparing you for something even better or bigger and your reaction will be important for you to reach your true destiny. Remember that this is also a test of your leadership qualities and how you react may be used for or against you in the future. Therefore my humble advise is for everybody to put on their shock absorbers. Congratulations in advance to all those who will be adopted including myself if I am adopted as Silwizya Ward 13 of Lusaka Central Constituency candidate to contest as councillor on the PF ticket. Put on shock absorbers Dear Editor, IN the recent past we have seen a lot of people declaring interest to be adopted to contest various positions in the forthcoming elections due on August 12, 2021. It is interesting to see how especially the Patriotic Front has welcomed all those with the intention of contesting to come out in the open now. Not long ago, we saw the PF secretary-general calling all civil servants with this interest to resign and state their position. This is a welcome position because in a democratic country people must be free to express themselves to contest any position.
HONEY BEE SCANDAL NEEDS FULL PROBE Dear editor, WE welcome the decision by President Edgar Lungu who in his discretion has deemed it appropriate to go separate ways with the minister of Health, Dr Chitalu Chilufya. We still hold Dr Chilufya in high esteem especially the tireless work he did at the peak of the invisible enemy of Coronavirus. We are also calling for the cleansing of the Ministry of Heath from the generation of corruption scandals. It is the same ministry that had its former officers (Henry Kapoko and colleagues) sent to prison for embezzlement of public financial resources. This is a tip of an iceberg of the chronic and pathological culture of corruption at the ministry. It is deep rooted and decisive measures should be taken to find long term solutions. Besides the minister being dropped, please dismiss all the directors and the entire procurement department at the ministry. He is not the problem in that ministry. Dr Chilufya is only a political head of the ministry while the technical team comprises of the various professionals who work behind the scene. It does not help to merely change a guard without
cracking a whip on other public servants. In fact, all illicit transactions bear the seal and signature of Permanent Secretaries and Directors. If the policy makers such as ministers can be shown the exit door, the technocrats should receive proportionate measure. Dr Chilufya was merely a political head of the ministry. Further, in this Honey Bee Pharmacy scandal, we need to define the liability of other key stakeholders. What of security institutions at the port of entry, what is the definition of their lia-
bility on the Honey Bee Pharmacy scandal? We have seen stakeholders such as Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS), Zambia Medicine Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) and Medical Stores Limited (MSL) playing Adam and Eve games at the expense of the public. We suspect the heads of these institutions are playing to the gallery and exonerating themselves. We are also calling for the dissolution of the Boards of Directors at ZABS, MSL and ZAMRA followed by the consequent dismissal of their respective top

Dear Editor, HEALTH Minister Dr Chitalu Chilufya may have been relieved of his duties but the man still remains a PF member of Parliament. I wonder what's the celebration foazr surely. The man served diligently, extremely helpful to many party functionaries. It's a pity that he has become a victim of his
generosity and quest to see that local suppliers are able to participate favourably. However the folly by money hungry cadres who supplied fake things just to drive a nice vehicle has cost our innocent and hardworking minister his job. Truthfully speaking Dr. Chilufya has been instrumental
not only to government but to majority citizens that he has helped through various forms of both political and economic freedom. Like the Bible says, only God knows our destiny, in as much as many may have wanted him to continue clearly God knew that this was how it will end, we only pray and hope for the
management. We do not agree that ZABS can wash its hands in this matter on the basis that they communicated the decision for the so-called appropriate action. Since this issue is criminal in nature, did ZABS also report to ACC, DEC and the police, the competent bodies to undertake criminal prosecution? We do not agree that matters that are criminal in nature can be handled administratively. We are also disappointed with Honey Bee Pharmacy and persons connected to it for this disgraceful and unpatriotic behaviour. We are told there are Zambians with vested interests in this company and we wonder why the Zambian company can disregard national interests and embark on an act which is tantamount to murdering the consumers of the defective condoms and gloves. We do not expect Zambia Police or indeed any other relevant authority to wait for Presidential directives, public interest is sufficient directive that the law enforcement agencies can rely. We appeal for commencement of investigations in the matter and bring all culprits to book. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI, Lusaka.
best endeavours in his political career. To the newly appointed Health Minister, Dr. Jonas Chanda, we thank God for giving us another youthful minister and we pray hard that you may deliver according to people's expectations. To PF members, let's remember that Dr. Chilufya still remains one of our own and extremely important Mansa Central MP. MAXWELL CHONGU, Lusaka.

Two toilets collapse at police post By ROGERS KALERO
TWO toilets have collapsed at Mulenga compound police post in Kitwe following the heavy rains in the area. As a result, the Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU) has asked for help from wellwishers and stakeholders, Mulenga compound CCPU chairman, Martin Lupiya, said the two toilets collapsed on Sunday following heavy rains in the area and so it was urgent that the facilities were reconstructed. Mr Lupiya said the two toilets were the only facilities that officers and other people use , hence the urgent need to repair them. He was speaking when Kamfinsa constituency aspiring candidate, Kelvin Chipili, visited the area on Sunday. Mr Lupiya said he was asking for help from Mr Chipili because he had always been instrumental in supporting various community projects in Mulenga compound and Kamfinsa constituency in general. "Despite these rains, you decided to come and see what has befallen us when you were informed that two toilets at the

KITWE’S MUGALA TOWNSHIP GETS ELECTRICITY By ROGERS KALERO

ORE than K200, 000 has been spent on the connection of Mugala Township in Kitwe to the national grid, Kamakonde ward councillor Elijah Simukoko has said. Mr Simukoko said the funds to connect the township to the national grid was from Constituency Development Fund. Nkana Member of Parliament (MP) Alexander Chiteme rendered full supported the project Mr Simukoko said Mugala Township has a population of more than 3,000 people and had never been connected to the national grid since independence. The councillor said the Government was trying its best to set the stage for development
through infrastructure development. "We are working on a number of projects and one of the projects we have worked is the connection of Mugala Township to the national grid. This area was never been connected to the national grid until now under the Patriotic Front (PF) Government," Mr Simukoko said. Mr Simukoko said residents would now be able to engage in small-scale businesses such as salons, welding, barbershops and electrical repairs. He said electricity always boosted entrepreneurship because almost all facilities needed power for effective operations. The councillor urged residents in Mugala Township to make use of the power to enhance the livelihood and also ensure that they use electricity sustainable.
‘PF is still popular on Copperbelt’ By ROGERS KALERO THE Patriotic Front (PF) will not be unsettled by cheap propaganda from the UPND purporting that President Edgar Lungu had a hostile reception on the Copperbelt, Kitwe Deputy Mayor Chando Mbao has said. Mr Mbao, who is Riverside ward councillors, said the PF would not waste time on cheap propaganda from the UPND,
but concentrate on mobilising members from the grassroots level to set the stage for victory in this year's election. In an interview in Kitwe yesterday, he said the huge crowd which welcomed President Lungu in Kitwe on Saturday was enough reason why the ruling party should not be unsettled. He said the UPND must find better ways of campaigning as opposed to politics of hatred, bitterness and deceit.
"President Edgar Lungu had a good three-day visit. The warm and thunderous welcome he received in Kitwe is enough reason for the PF not to worry about those social media rants from the UPND," he said. Mr Mbao said all the people who lined up on Sunday to welcome the Republican president walked from far-flung areas on their own. He said even UPND members themselves were shocked by the
huge turn up, but decided to console themselves by posting irrelevant issues on social media. "They campaign on social media, telling lies and misleading people, but they will not succeed in their moves. They want to paint a bad picture of the Patriotic Front. Those who are objective and mature in their judgement, will tell you that the PF is much better than UPND," he said. He urged PF members at various levels to always refute the lies from the opposition and explain the truth about what Government was doing.

FIVE PF HOPEFULS JOSTLE FOR L/STONE PARLEY SEAT Saturday 25 April, 2020
By ANDREW MUKOMA
T
HE race for parliamentary adoption among Patriotic Front (PF) members in Livingstone is getting stiffer with five candidates eyeing the seat. Ikuka Muleta, Evans Fenete and Mr Munali have fixed the eyes on the Livingstone Central seat along with two female, aspirants,
Mutinta Matimba and Namakau Siyanga. Apparently, the five Parliamentary hopefuls are reported to have created groups, some of which were engaging in name calling against their competitors. The parliamentary hopefuls are jostling for adoption on the ruling party's ticket resulting in divisions in some areas as competition intensifies. According
to the information obtained by the Daily Nation, there is tension among the aspiring candidates and this has been linked to the party's loss in the just ended Maramba ward by-election. Some of them have been telling the grassroots that the party Secretary General Davies Mwila has assured them of easy adoption. Inside sources have disclosed that there has been
altercation among aspiring candidates, as a way of eliminating each other. "We have learnt with shocking that some of them as they meet the grassroots, they are using character assassination to eliminate their friends. But what we know as party officials no one has been adopted by anybody and people making claims must stop," the official said.
Recapitalise Livestock Research Station, urges Hamukale THE Mazabuka Research station, under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, must be recapitalised because of the crucial role it plays in enhancing livestock farming, says Southern Province Minister Edify Hamukale. Dr Hamukale noted the need for urgent support because of the institution's unique function in providing artificial insemination services. He said that artificial insemination was a cost effective and a modern way of pro-
moting livestock production. Dr Hamukale was speaking in Mazabuka when he toured the Mazabuka Research Station Institute of Animal Health. He added that artificial insemination was user friendly for livestock farmers especially in Southern Province which was endowed with a huge cattle population. The minister assured management at the institution that Government would work hard to recapitalise the insti-
tution to meet the needs of the farmers in livestock production. Speaking earlier, station acting Principal Livestock Research Officer, Sendy Kaonga, said the facility has the potential to significantly contribute to livestock development in the country. Ms Kaonga requested support for the institution to execute its mandate of providing modern livestock services in artificial insemination. - ZANIS

Embrace Ubuntu,15 Zambians urged By ANDREW MUKOMA A CLERGY in Livingstone has called on Zambians to embrace 'Ubuntu' as the country gets in the election mode regardless of their political affiliations. Joy Ministries International Overseer, Brian Mulenga, said it was illogical for Zambians to fight each others just for an election. Pastor Mulenga said it was important for citizens to understand that they are one and should not harm each other because of a political party's agenda. "This year is crucial for us as we go for elections. As you have seen in the previous elections, we had had a lot of electoral violence around elections. We must understand that we were born in the same nation, we only have different opinions and political inclinations but one people. "As Zambians, we must embrace the spirit of Ubuntu because you are because I am and I am because you are," he said. And Pastor Mulenga has challenged youths in Livingstone to be self-reliant by using vocational skills
beyond seeking employment. He told the Daily Nation that every youth needed to identify a skill they can use in order to advance their lives. Pastor Mulenga said the dependency syndrome by many youths should come to an end adding that engaging in entrepreneurship was one sure way of ending poverty. He said if youths engaged in self-employment, the country would become key players in the national economy.

ILLEGAL GOLD SALES …Algeria’s ex-PM admits selling gold bars from Gulf donors on black market
Former Algerian premier Ahmed Ouyahia
ALGIERS - Former Algerian premier Ahmed Ouyahia, on trial for corruption, has admitted receiving gold bars from Gulf donors then selling them on the black market, the official APS news agency reported. Ouyahia and fellow ex-prime minister Abdelmalek Sellal are accused of covertly financ-
Mining tycoon in Swiss trial over Guinea deal A billionaire French-Israeli diamond magnate, Beny Steinmetz, has arrived in court in Switzerland to face trial over alleged corruption linked to a major mining deal in Guinea. He has always denied his company, BSGR, paid multi-million dollar bribes to obtain iron ore mining exploration permits in southern Guinea in 2008. He travelled to Geneva from Israel for the two-week trial. If convicted he could face up to 10 years in prison. Steinmetz, 64, was previously sentenced in absentia to five years in prison by a court in Romania for money laundering. Swiss prosecutors say Steinmetz paid about $10m (£7.4m) in bribes, in part through Swiss bank accounts, to gain the rights to Guinea's iron ore deposits in the Simandou mountains. The area is believed to contain the world's largest untapped iron ore deposits. His lawyer Marc Bonnant says "we will plead his innocence". According to the prosecutors, the bribes to Guinean public officials were paid with the help of Mamadie Toure, the widow of Guinea’s former president Lansana Conte. They also allege that Steinmetz forged documents linked to the deal.- BBC
NEWS IN BRIEF Global coronavirus cases surpass 90 in battle on new variant LONDON - Worldwide coronavirus cases surpassed 90 million yesterday, according to Reuters tally, as nations around the globe scramble to procure vaccines and continue to extend or reinstate lockdowns to fight new coronavirus variants. The new CovidD-19 variants discovered initially in the United Kingdom and South Africa are rapidly spreading globally. – REUTERS.
French warplanes fly over CAR amid rebel offensives BANGUI - Rebels attacked two towns in the Central African Republic on Saturday as French warplanes flew over in an apparent attempt to deter an advance on the capital after a disputed election. The attacks on Bouar, 440 km northwest of the capital and Grimari, 300 km northeast of Bangui, were the latest by a coalition of armed rebels backed by former president Francois Bozize. – REUTERS.
Democrats kick off efforts to drive Trump from office after violence at Capitol WASHINGTON - Congressional Democrats yesterday began their drive to force President Donald Trump from office, kicking off a week of legislative action that could end with a vote that would make him the only president in U.S. history to be impeached twice. Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol last week, scattering lawmakers who were certifying Democratic President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory, in a harrowing assault on the centre of American democracy that left five dead. – REUTERS.
Pope, in new decree, allows more roles for women in Church VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis, in another step towards greater equality for women in the Roman Catholic Church, yesterday changed its law to allow them to serve as readers at liturgies, altar servers and distributors of communion. In a decree, the pope formalised what already has been happening in many countries for years. But with the change in the Code of Canon Law, conservative bishops will not be able to block women in their diocese from those roles. – REUTERS.
ing the 2019 re-election bid of then-president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned shortly afterwards amid mass anti-government protests. Their retrial opened on Saturday after the Supreme Court in November annulled their earlier convictions following an appeal, APS said.
Both had served under Bouteflika. Several former ministers and other well-known figures are also on trial over the same affair. Ouyahia was questioned over the source of assets in his bank accounts, totalling more than $5m. He said some had come
from black market sales “of gold bars, which he received as a gift, in his capacity as prime minister, from leaders of Gulf countries,” APS reported. The 60 gold bars were estimated to be valued at some $2.5m. The trial of Ouyahia and Sellal in December 2019 was the first in a series of high-profile corruption cases launched after Bouteflika resigned earlier that year. It was also the first time since Algeria’s inde-

pendence from France in 1962 that former prime ministers had been put on trial. Ouyahia was prime minister four times between 1995 and 2019, and had been sentenced to 15 years behind bars. Sellal, who served from 2012 to 2017 and managed four of Bouteflika’s election campaigns, was sentenced to 12 years in jail. The pair were sentenced to further jail time in separate cases last year. – ALJAZEERA.

THE DANGER OF MISINFORMATION
I
N eight days from now, Donald Trump will officially no longer be the United States President but he will be one former President who will be remembered for a long time to come. Firstly, he came not from the usual background that most come. While most Presidents would be seasoned politicians before, probably held a political office, usually a senator, Trump came from the business world. He had held no political office prior to his ascension to power. He defeated a lot of prominent Republican nominees during the Presidential race of 2016. One of the major tool for this was social media, he used Twitter a lot to reach out to millions of Americans. His tweets were usually raw, very unlikely filtered by his editorial team, he just spoke his mind and didn’t care much whoever saw his tweets and how they interpreted them. Trump continued with this even after he became the President, he had about 88 million twwitter followers. Some tweets were unpresidential but he didn’t care. Looking at the power he held, most of his followers took his tweets as truth. Recently there were some controversial tweets that is alleged to have sent that incited his followers to march to Capitol Hill and interrupt the process of confirming Joe Biden as the next US president. The “peaceful protest” ended up in at least five dead including a Police officer. Twitter was forced to permanently suspend Trump’s account and is currently facing possible impeachment. He’ll be the first US President to face this twice. Though Trump tweeted on lot of subjects most of which he didn’t have the expertise on, one greatly affected was health. His tweets about the Covid-19 pandemic, has left a lasting impression all over the world. The common tweets and claims is that Covid-19 is a hoax. He claimed that doc-
tors are paid more if they certify one as having died of Covid. He even once proposed injecting bleach to cure Covid-19. He downplayed its seriousness saying it was just a flu. He undermined the wearing of masks etc. This has left the US with the highest infections at over 22 million with number of deaths over 370, 000.
THE FAKE POSTS MISINFORMING THE PUBLIC A lot of people have followed in Trump’s footsteps, sending a lot of messages on social media with false claims and a potential to
cause serious harm to those that will believe in them. I am sure you have seen such posts circulating most especially on WhatsApp groups and Facebook, a lot of people have sent them to me to comment on them. PLEASE THEY ARE NOT GENUINE, THEY ARE FAKE!
*1) ONE CLAIMING TO BE FROM ITALIAN MINISTRY OF HEALTH. This one claims to be from the Italian ministry of health which did autopsies on the Covid-19 corpses, which is said to be against WHO guidelines and that their findings were showing corona virus is not a virus but a huge bacterium, some 5G connection which I have debunked many times. Further, it says that this bacteria causes blood clots form. Yes it is true clots do form in the people who suffer from Covid-19, and it is true anticoagulants are used but it is the virus that leads to the formation of these clots
and not the bacteria, I written about this in one of my Articles entitled “COVID-19 AND BLOOD CLOTS.” Corona virus is a virus and not a bacteria. I discussed this in the series” KNOW THINE ENEMY.” The misleading post even claims ICU and ventilators
were never needed to treat Covid-19 patients. This is cleary from someone who has never seen what severe Covid-19 can do, there is no place to handle a severe form of Covid-19 than in ICU. Please don’t circulate such lies. If Italy knew the cure how come they have over close to 2.5 million cases and over 78, 000?
*2) CLAIMING TO BE FROM A ZAMBAIN DOCTOR’S PERSPECTIVE The other common post or article is one claiming to be from one “Zambia Doctor”
talking about steaming as a cure for Covid-19 and proposing some time frame for that. In as much as steaming maybe beneficial, it is not a cure, I repeat it is not a cure for Covid-19. I will discuss steaming in details in the coming articles. The fake article suggests that steaming can cure the Covid-19 and gives a oneweek programme to do, “if we all adopt this practice for a week the deadly virus will be eradicated,” its reads in part. It talks about specific temperature at which to steam to kill he virus, I’m afraid this put a lot of people at risk of sustaining facial burns and other complications.
It also claims the entire public health system knows about this but is not sharing information to the public so as to take advantage of the pandemic. Of course there are few who may have selfishly benefitted at the expense of the hardworking many and people should learn to draw a line between the politics, the plunder, the pandemic and the professionals fighting it on the ground. Anyway, if this was the cure and the health care workers know about it how come they are also dying from the same, professors, doctors, nurses, etc. have died and are dying from Covid-19, including their
relatives, how would they let this happen if they knew the cure? Please whenever you see these fake posts please post this article debunking them. Please fellow citizens, Covid-19 is a real disease caused by a real virus and to date has no cure. Vaccines are being given in the hope that people will have immunity against the virus but we are yet to see how these will work out. There is still a lot to be known about this disease and the virus that causes it. But whatever is scientifically known and globally agreed upon at the moment is shared for everyone to read and not kept a secret. I repeat, please go to the official page of WHO. If there are people that wants this pandemic to end its Front liners, at least I do. We don’t live normal lives during this time, it’s not easy taking care of Covid-19 patients day in day out, the clothing, the masks, the stress from the dying etc, it’s a lot that really drains us physically and mentally, we are tired we want this all to end. Please we are not your enemies but your servants, have you forgotten we are even your sons and daughters, your relatives, please trust us, we don’t mean you any harm but good. ALUTA CONTINUA, THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES, PLEASE: *MASK UP! *OBSERVE HAND HYGIENE! *SOCIALISE WISELY! And because you care I believe you shall share.
