DON’T RELAX! IT is encouraging that Zambia has continued to record a reduced number of new Covid-19 infections. This should be thanks to the frontline health workers, led by the Ministry of Health who have continued to sensitise the public about the health dangers looming should they flout preventive measures. This has not been easy amidst a discerning public that at times appear to be paying no attention to the warnings and advise from the health authorities on the need to observe and lead a healthy lifestyle. Health Minister Jonas Chanda yesterday reported that the country recorded 773 new Covid-19 cases out of 5, 817 tests conducted in 10 districts, with the daily positivity rate reducing to 13 percent from 17 percent. Dr Chanda said in a statement that there has been a reduction in the number of active cases. “Over the past few days, we have seen a reduction in the number of active cases. Additionally, there has been a reduction in the number of admissions from close to 500 to now having admissions in the 300s,” Dr Chanda said. “We have 4, 939 active cases. The number of active cases has been reducing consistently for the past nine days and it is our hope that this will continue,” he said. As the minister explained, the reduction in the number of positive cases gives hope that the curve can be flattened if everyone worked together in fighting the pandemic. That is where the catch is. Zambians must not lose focus that Covid-19, especially the second wave is more deadly thus calling for increased vigilance. They should make masking up in public places, especially in confined spaces, buses and at markets a habit. People must regard masks as they do their cell phones. Immediately one notices they have forgotten the handset, they head back home like their life depends on it. We note that the Road Transport and Safety Agency has placed adverts in several newspapers advising bus crews to ensure that passengers boarding their vehicles have face masks on. This is a positive move. The only snag though is that the bus crews are not enforcing this directive – at least for Lusaka operators. The public ought to realise that much as the health authorities are doing their best to stem the spread of the pandemic, the onus rest with the people to heed their advice. The World Health Organisation said on Thursday for example that deaths from Covid-19 in Africa surged by 40 percent over the last month, as the continent’s toll approaches 100, 000. It said “Over 22, 300 deaths were reported in Africa in the last 28 days, compared with nearly 16, 000 deaths in the previous 28 days,” said the WHO Africa office based in the Republic of the Congo capital Brazzaville. These grim figures should be a reminder about the looming danger should we let our guard down. Let’s stay healthy by masking up, washing and sanitising our hands and maintaining social distancing all the time.

FISP BENEFICIARIES NEED AFFORDABLE FERTILISER By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE

W

HEN Brazil’s leading agricultural company, Agronelli, announced that it had completed its analysis of Zambian soil and was ready to send suitable phosphate fertiliser to Zambia, there was a widespread feeling that the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) had finally come to terms with its appalling costly fertiliser past. However, as smallholder farmers celebrated the dawning of a supposedly post-pricey fertiliser-era, they ignored the fact that in Zambia’s agricultural history there have always been moments of massive progressive breakthroughs that were then followed immediately by reactionary developments, and things slipped back to their former equilibrium. Possibly so, the phosphate fertiliser from Brazil would enable Zambian smallholder farmers to produce a bumper harvest even in the drought period. This followed Zambia’s decision to send its soil samples for analysis to Brazil, over a year ago. The Brazilian company is now ready to send a team of experts to Zambia, for meetings with stakeholders in the agricultural sector. Zambia’s Ambassador to Brazil Alfreda Kansembe Mwamba expressed delight with Agronelli’s move to partner with Zambia in phosphate fertiliser production. She said that the gesture by the fertiliser company to visit Zambia and meet officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant institutions was a welcome move. Ms Mwamba added that during a meeting held in Uberaba in Brazil, it was proposed that Zambia could become the distribution centre of Agronelli’s phosphate fertiliser in the region and beyond. And Agronelli Research Supervisor, Samilia Sousa observed that Zambia and Brazil have similar soil patterns that made the two countries have a greater opportunity to do business in the agricultural industry and grow it. This got me thinking. Perhaps Agronelli should partner with ZCCM-IH in long-term phosphate mining and value-addition ventures. Meanwhile, Agronelli Company Director, Renato Costa, said that the team of experts from the agro-company was expected to visit Zambia in this year’s second quarter. He said Brazil’s agricultural

Commercial farmers are significant players on food and agricultural markets

sector had been, thriving even with fluctuations in weather patterns because of the suitable fertiliser that was able to support the industry in all seasons. The Brazilian agro-company has a huge market among Brazilian farmers with an annual revenue base of US$50 million from sales. Zambia has all the ingredients to feed itself and the sub-region, but costly fertiliser has been a perennial challenge for the country. Yet, FISP has been the mainstay of Zambia’s food basket. This needs to continue to ensure food security in the country. Under FISP, Government distributes subsidised agricultural farming inputs, that include basal and topdressing fertilisers to smallscale producers of maize, the country’s staple food crop. FISP, introduced in the 2009-2010 farming season, was transformed from the Farmer Support Programme. FISP has continued to dominate the agricultural sector because of the significant role its beneficiaries play in beefing up the country’s strategic food reserves. Zambia’s agriculture sector has continued being robust as a direct result of the robust FISP programme. Commercial farmers are significant players on food and agricultural markets, but it is the smallholder farmers that make the difference between bumper harvests and food shortages in the country. It is the contribution of these FISP beneficiaries that has ensured that Zambia reaped bumper harvests year after year. This is so even in times when there are droughts and some parts of the country record crop harvest deficits. With small-scale farmers making up the majority of

Zambia’s agricultural producers, it is of great value that their voice is not only heard but becomes part of the solution, especially regarding the costly fertilisers. As Zambia increased fourfold its annual budget allocation of FISP from K1.4billion in 2020 to K5.7bn in 2021 for procurement of farming inputs, there is no arguing that the country needs to put the high-cost of fertilisers in order.

Zambia’s Ambassador to Brazil Alfreda Kansembe Mwamba expressed delight with Agronelli’s move to partner with Zambia in phosphate fertiliser production.

Nonetheless, judging by ZCCM-IH’s Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) completion of the US$500m Mufulira smelter upgrade, that was expected to stop the sulphur dioxide emissions that socio-environmentally had affected the area for over 70 years, it could be said that the frustration most affected small-scale farmers felt was a direct result of high-

cost fertilisers and ZCCM-IH’s inability to facilitate development of phosphate mining in Zambia to provide cost-effective raw materials for production of affordable fertilisers at Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) and other emerging manufacturing sites. The Mufulira smelter’s capturing of 97 percent of sulphur dioxide emissions and turning them into sulphuric acid – a major ingredient other than phosphates – in fertiliser production should have compelled our government to speed up the process of issuing phosphate mining licences to local and foreign investors who had expressed interest in exploiting this mineral resource in phosphate-rich Central, Eastern and Western provinces. Science and innovation are crucial to the agricultural sector and especially for Zambia, which suffers from low yields in drought-prone areas. Science and innovation can help farmers by developing new seed varieties, creating new cropping techniques, and also developing adapted fertilisers to satisfy Zambia’s specific soil characteristics and crop needs. Agronelli seems well-positioned for this, and ready to partner with Zambian entities. Incidentally, the completion of the Mufulira smelter upgrade resulted in a greatly improved socio-environment for the local community and MCM mineworkers but sulphuric acid – its byproduct – could have been an agricultural turning tide in this border town. Early signs were easy to spot if one looked closely enough. Countries like Brazil have enjoyed the economic benefits of established fertiliser exporting business to other countries. Needless to say, the Zambian government’s desire which is to have partnerships between local and foreign investors in the development of phosphate mining and fertiliser production, in line with the country’s Citizen’s Economic Empowerment (CEE) Act shows that more should have been done to encourage and support smallholder farmers. These could have included giving farmers access to affordable fertiliser prices, turning agriculture into a business for FISP beneficiaries through their balanced-weaning from the programme and thus enabling them to self-raise funds for inputs needed to improve yields; and gradually moving up the economic value chain from subsistence to commercial producers.

CHONGWE VILLAGERS RIOT

….as corrupt wildlife officers rile villagers From Page 1 Mr Mwanza disclosed that the villagers of Mulalika Village mobilised to attack and chase the officers who were camped in the Chalenga area of Chongwe. He said that the incident happened on Friday around 18:00 hours. The villagers have accused the officers and a member of the lands committee in the area of charging charcoal traders illegal fees. The officers were working in collusion with other operatives to intimidate and extort money from them. Traders who come to order charcoal from the charcoal burners in the area are charged up to K1, 500 per truckload of charcoal. Mr Mwanza condemned the act and promised to investigate the matter. He said that his office would not condone corrupt practices from government officers. He also advised the residents and charcoal traders to be calm as his office was working to resolve the matter. He revealed that his office had received an official complaint from the charcoal traders association. He also confirmed receiving evidence in the alleged scam. He had now convened

a meeting with all stakeholders involved and was studying the submissions. He promised to engage the provincial national wildlife office to resolve the matter. And Zambia Police spokesperson, Esther Katongo confirmed that some residents had mobilised and chased the wildlife officers from the area. In a statement to the Sunday Nation yesterday she revealed that the residents were provoked after they learnt that some officers had gone into the area to ask for payment from a trader whose charcoal laden truck had broken down on its way out. She said the villagers managed to chase the officers and apprehended one woman. She however disclosed that there was no violence. She said that order had since been restored by police who moved to the area and the woman was also rescued. A trader, Willy Mumba of Bauleni market said the officers were demanding bribes despite the traders having permits from the forestry office. He claims that the payments were made through an Airtel mobile money account of a named officer and a Mr. Njekwa, a member of the lands committee in the area.

I FEEL LIKE KILLING MYSELF,

CONFESSES GIRL SEXUALLY ABUSED BY FAMILY MEMBERS From Page 1 Mary, who turns 18 this year confessed that she felt partly relieved for having spoken to the reporter. She narrated that the abuse started in the village where she had stayed for a year with her grandparents. She said the cousin would take the opportunity to defile her every time other family members went to the farm. “I really can’t remember how old I was, but was so little and my cousin was at school. He used to sleep with me whenever everyone went to the farm. After sleeping with me, he would ensure I bathed,” Mary said. Asked if anyone noticed or if she told anyone, Mary

said she never told anyone because he threatened her life. Her salvation from the hands of the cousin, came when she went back to live in Lusaka with her mother. “I was happy to be back with mum, because then I did not have to endure the pain and live in fear,” she said. Mary however said when she was 10 years, the uncle came to ask for her to live with him as he needed someone to help with house chores. “My uncle (mum’s brother) who had just divorced his wife told my mum that he wanted me to go and stay with him to help with chores. Mum agreed but little I know it would be an-

other period of abuse,” she said. The victim said the uncle sexually assaulted her from around 2011 to 2019. She said in the first five years, they were just staying the two of them. “He never really had sex with me, but would insert his finger in my vagina and caress my other parts of the body while promising gifts. He used to say if he doesn’t buy me presents like chocolates, boys would take advantage of me,” she said. She said the abuse went on even after he remarried in 2016 and would abuse her when the new wife was away. Mary said the abuse occurred right in his home She said at some point

the uncle wanted to sleep with her but she refused and threatened to report him. Mary said her freedom came when she met her biological father. When asked if any family member knows about the ordeal, she said only the step mum and grandfather knew. “My step mum encouraged me to release somethings from my heart because I was stressing. I feel empty. Growing up I always thought of committing suicide, even now, I still have those thoughts of committing suicide. In fact speaking to you has made me feel much better Mr andMusukwa relieved.” She said the abuse affected her learning as she could not concentrate.

Tax removal: Zambia has cheapest oil in the region By NATION REPORTER FUEL in Zambia has become cheaper than in some neighbouring countries; raising the specter of fuel smuggling out of the country to, energy expert Eng Johnstone Chikwanda has warned. Energy expert Johnstone Chikwanda has said the 41 percent removal of taxes on fuel by Government has also prevented a possible fuel

price increase. He has urged the Energy Regulations Board to remain resolute and continue to protect the integrity of the supply chain including ensuring that no illegal fuel exports happen out of Zambia to neighbouring countries. Engineer Chikwanda said Oil Marketing Companies should be commended for showing industry statesmanship by ensuring that the fuel situation in the country was

Zambia Revenue Authority thwarts smuggling bid From Page 1 The goods would have resulted in Government losing K2.5 million in tax revenue Zambia Revenue Corporate Communications Manager Topsy Sikalinda disclosed yesterday. The nine trucks entered the county through the Victoria Falls border post and that the importer declared the goods as generator sets when in fact the goods were assorted wooden furniture which attract up to 40 percent duty. Mr Sikalinda said the nine trucks belonging to Z-Mart Transport are parked at ZRA warehouse in Lusaka pending recommendation for forfeiture of the goods and vessels without compensation in accordance with the Commissioner Generals’ memo on the treatment of smuggling cases. Mr. Sikalinda said Government would have lost K2.5 million in taxes had the crime not been detected by customs officers. He said ZRA has since suspended the licence for the clearing agent involved

back to normal. He said the normalisation of the fuel situation should as well be attributed to a series of Government’s intervention involving the removal of customs duty at 25 percent, VAT at 16 percent and excise duty on Diesel while on Petrol, the excise duty has been reduced. “This demonstrates the extent to which Government has gone to cushion the general public against possible fuel prices increases while

protecting security of supply,” Eng Chikwanda said. He said with the interventions by Government, the national fuel stock had significantly improved. “Information on the ground is that in a short space of time, the national fuel stock level has significantly improved and continues to increase thereby increasing the energy security in the country,” he said.

Explore emerald mining, Zambians urged By SILUMESI MALUMO

NINE trucks laden with furniture but labeled as generators have been intercepted. and has recommended for the complete revocation of the licence. Mr Sikalinda also said a group calling itself Victoria Falls border clearing agents association is not recognised by the ZRA. He also disclosed that from March, 1, 2021 Government will restrict use of the Victoria Falls border post for commercial cargo and vehicles above 16 tons as a measure to protect revenue.

Mr Sikalinda explained that documents for four trucks were presented to customs officers with a forged inspection report which made officers to wonder how an inspection report was done and signed before the trucks arrived at the entry point on the Zambian side. “This prompted for a detailed inspection and the trucks were referred to Livingstone port office in the central business district for a physical inspection because

Victoria Falls border post has no inspection and scanning facilities. “Upon a physical inspection being done, it was discovered that the goods in the trucks were not generators but wooden furniture,” he said. Mr Sikalinda said after an investigation was immediately launched it was discovered that five other trucks had entered the country using the same border post.

ZAMBIANS need to tap into emerald mining as it has potential to contribute towards economic growth and poverty reduction, United Party for Prosperous Zambia president (UPPZ) Charles Chanda has said. Mr Chanda said Zambians had not taken keen interest to explore the sector and should do so because emeralds were on high demand on the international market. He said the locals should take a centre stage in the lucrative sector instead of leaving it to foreign investors. Mr Chanda who invested in the emerald sector, said the subsector was lucrative and therefore, Zambians should invest massively for the country to start earning much needed revenue. “Zambia has emeralds

which are in high demand on the international market. We have seen that Zambia has been producing emeralds which are not mined especially in developed countries. “This is the time Zambians can take advantage so that they can be able to earn more money thereby contributing to the economic growth of the country,” he said. Mr Chanda said Zambians can form cooperatives and be able access resources to help them start mining emeralds.

TANZANIAN MUTE OVER MUKULA LOGS By PETER SICHALI

A

TANZANIAN truck driver arrested with a truckload of Mukula in Nakonde has remained mute about owners of the logs, the police have confirmed. Police have been investigating the scam to fish out the owners of the logs. Muchinga Province Commissioner of Police, Lizzie Machina,

said the driver of the truck had not revealed who the owners of the Mukula logs were despite being in custody for almost two weeks. Ms Machina said Michael Musa 32, had however been charged with unlawful possession of biological resources. She said Musa was arrested after police in Nakonde intercepted a Scania truck and trailer loaded with Mukula

logs. Ms Machina said the suspect has been charged with unlawfully possessing biological resources contrary to Section 120(a) (b) of the Environment Management Act. The truck bearing registration number T317 CAP and T686 CAH was intercepted at GMC parking area in Ilendela village on January 30, around 22:00 hours in Ilendela village of Nakonde.

‘Zambia to record bumper harvest’ ZAMBIA National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has said the country is expected to have a bumper harvest because it has recorded one of the best seasons of crop production this year. Speaking in an interview ZNFU Public Relations Manager Kakoma Kaleyi said crop production is expected to exceed previous records of the past four years. Mr Kalayi noted that the country has experienced a good harvest this year and this is because the government and farmers worked together to ensure minimal damage was caused. He said Southern Province and some parts of Western and Central provinces which have not been productive for the past four years are expected to have a good harvest this year. Mr. Kaleyi said most of the farmers in Central and Eastern provinces had to replant their crops owing

Govt assesses Kafulafuta dam damage A JOINT team of District Commissioners from Luanshya, Ndola, Mpongwe and Masait have inspected the US$ 449 million Kafulafuta Dam Project to assess the extent of vandalism on the ongoing project. Some unidentified people are vandalising water reticulation infrastructure in the Kafulafuta dam project aimed at improving water supply to the four districts. “What we have noticed is that vandalism is concentrated along the road where there is no security while the pump house and the dam where we

have stationed security are all safe," Mpongwe District Commissioner Keith Maila observed. Mr Maila who led the team expressed disappointment at the development, describing the situation as economic sabotage. “The government has spent a lot of money on this project and we shall not let people vandalise this noble cause which will benefit not only Masaiti, but also Luanshya, Mpongwe and Ndola," he said. ‘Automatic progression to Grade 8 is counterproductive’ By NOEL IYOMBWA THE National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) says it is disturbed to learn that all Grade 7 candidates who sat for the 2020 examinations will be progressing to Grade 8. NAQEZ director Aaron Chansa said automatic progression to Grade 8 is academically suicidal and a clear effort against quality education in the country. Mr Chansa said that given the nationwide uproar against this policy in 2019, NAQEZ had hoped that the Ministry of General Education would abandon this unpopular policy in 2020. “As a country, we cannot seriously proceed with a policy and practice that allows even those who cannot read or write to proceed to higher academic levels. “This single policy, in our view, has contributed a great deal to poor quality of secondary education in Zambia because it ushers even poorly-baked learners into the secondary sub-sector from primary school,” he said. Mr Chansa noted that there are a lot of semi-illiterate secondary school learners because of the counterproductive nature of allowing all candidates to progress to Grade 8. He has since pleaded with the Ministry of General Education to reverse this policy, adding that it does not add any value to the education system. He observed that what is needed is the reintroduction of cut-off points so that only those who score above 600 marks are allowed to pursue an academic path in Grade 8.

ZAMRA scraps Honeybee Pharmacy licence By GRACE CHAILELESOETSA THE Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) has revoked Honeybee Pharmacy Limited’s licence and dismissed claims that the two parties were negotiating for an out of court settlement. ZAMRA in a press release issued yesterday stated that it had revoked Pharmaceutical Licence Number PL/5-00091/19 that was issued to Honeybee

Pharmacy. This was “for contravening terms and conditions of the pharmaceutical licence, failure to carry out remedial measures as outlined in the notice of intent to revoke the pharmaceutical licence and for ceasing to carry on business as Honeybee Pharmacy without giving notice to the Authority,” said ZAMRA Senior Public Relations Officer Christabel Mutale Iliamupu. Ms Lliamupu also dismissed media reports that the two entities were en-

to the flash floods which were caused by the heavy rains this year. “When crop maturity is expected at a certain stage and then flash floods are experienced it becomes devastating to farmers because both the crops and nutrients have been washed away,” he said. He added that Muchinga and Northern provinces experienced fall armyworms, but the government had taken action and distributed pesticides. Mr. Kaleyi said farmers were aware and ready after listening to the early warning messages that were sent to areas that were expected to have poor or heavy rainfall. “The effects of the fall army worms were not very bad because the farmers were proactive and when the government was coming in they complemented each other,” he said. – ZANIS.

gaged in an out of court settlement. “To this effect, the Authority has since directed Honeybee Pharmacy to surrender the aforementioned licence to the Authority and further ordered that medical products on their premises be quarantined until further guidance from the Authority,” she said. But in an affidavit in support of notice to adjourn the matter filed in the Lusaka High Court on February 5, 2021, HoneyBee’s lawyer Emmanuel Lilanda

of Messrs Tutwa S. Ngulube and Company sought for the adjournment of the matter which was scheduled for an inter parte hearing of an injunction on February 8 this year before Judge Catherine Lombe Phiri. In this matter, HoneyBee Pharmacy Limited is seeking an order to stop the ZAMRA from revoking its licence. He stated that ZAMRA would not suffer any prejudice if the matter was adjourned to another date to be agreed on by the parties.

The pharmaceutical company wants the Lusaka High Court to order that the matter be referred to arbitration as per the provisions of the contract governing the relationship between it and the procuring entity. Honeybee also wants an order of interim injunction to restrain ZAMRA by itself, agents or whomsoever from revoking its pharmaceutical licence and publish any information on social media and other platforms calculated at injuring its reputation and any other reliefs deemed fit.

MAN HIDES MBANJE IN UNDERWEAR

A

MAN who was peddling dagga has been arrested after cops found twists of marijuana stuffed in his underwear in a wardrobe.

A source said cops from Entumbane Police Station received a tip-off that Mpumelelo Tshuma (42) had planted dagga at his house and was also selling it. Detectives went to his home and they found Tshuma’s niece, Sherlyn Moyo (20). The source said the cops conducted a search at the house and discovered four plants of mbanje in a vegetable

bed. The source said: “One of the plants was two metres, the other one was 1,9 metres, the other one was 1,8 metres and the smallest one was 1,6 metres tall.” The source said Moyo fingered her uncle as the owner of the dagga plants. The inquisitive cops also gathered that Tshuma hid twists of mbanje in his bedroom. Police then waited for him. Tshuma arrived home at around 4.30pm from work and the detectives pounced on him. They asked where he hid his twists of mbanje and he led

them to his bedroom. “He had stuffed twelve twists of mbanje in underwear which he had covered with clothes in a wardrobe,” said the source. Police arrested Tshuma. Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident. “We arrested a man from Entumbane suburb who had planted mbanje in his vegetable garden and was also selling it.”Assistant Inspector Msebele applauded members of the public for supplying the police with information that led to the arrest of the mbanje peddler. - BMETRO

Man takes wife’s underwear fetish to girlfriends THIS might sound kinky, but seriously, it’s not.

A woman from Gokwe discovered a shocking and twisted secret about her husband that every time he went to make love to his girlfriends he would put on her “precious” underwear claiming it was meant to boost his libido or sex drive. Memory Gororo from Zvabata Village discovered her husband, Edilliet Chichopa’s proclivity of wearing her underwear as a way of boosting his sexual desire after his best friend Gift Chinovhiringa caught him having sex with his wife, Gladys Bvunzawabaya, in the bush. It is reported that Chinovhiringa from Nyamapanda Village, who has been suspicious that his wife was sleeping with his best friend following a tip-off from a local who had been observing them for a while, decided to secretly follow her to the bush where she had gone to

meet Chichopa under the pretext that she was fetching firewood. The ambush was laid after his uncle, who once caught Chichopa and Bvunzawabaya having sex and was paid an undisclosed amount of money to buy his silence, spilled the beans after he was busted demanding sex from Bvunzawabaya. The uncle was soliciting for sex from Bvunzawabaya as ransom to keep his mouth shut. His suspicions were confirmed when Chinovhiringa, who was monitoring the two, saw them lying down on their improvised makeshift mat, kissing and cuddling each other. “He hid behind trees to see what was happening. Minutes later when they were about to have sex that is when he appeared. When the two saw him drawing closer, they got up and started running but he told his

wife to stop because he had already seen everything they had been doing in the bush. “Chichopa who was still naked took off at top speed leaving behind his lover to face the consequences alone. Gladys (Bvunzawabaya) who later revealed that she had lost count of the number of occasions they had sex with Chichopa asked for forgiveness,” said a source from the area who requested anonymity. It is reported that when Chinovhiringa followed Chichopa to his homestead he threatened to strike him with an axe leading him to report the matter to Chief Nemangwe. It was, however, at the Chief Nemangwe’s traditional court that Bvunzawabaya, who was apparently so guilty and angry at herself, decided to save her marriage by confessing that she had slept with Chichopa on several occasions until the day her

husband caught them. “All she needed from her husband was forgiveness for betraying him and that prompted her to tell the truth before the court,” the source said. Added the source: “Chichopa who had vehemently denied that she had slept with Bvunzawabaya was shamed when the latter revealed everything on how they were meeting and the sex positions they did every time they had sex. “Shocking details further emerged when Bvunzawabaya revealed that each time, they were meeting to have sex he would come putting on his wife’s purple underwear claiming it was meant to boost his libido and for his wife not to suspect that he was cheating on her”. Chief Nemangwe confirmed the incident, saying it was pending before his traditional court. - BMETRO

Woman ends up looking like Fiona from Shrek after major fake tan mistake LILLY Vigus, a student from Rochester, has shared her epic fake tan fail after she ended up turning green and her pals compared her to the character of Fiona from Shrek

Getting the perfect fake tan isn’t easy and can take a lot of practice. Along the way, there’s bound to be a few mishaps and mistakes, and one woman recently had a pretty major one. Lilly Vigus from Rochester, Kent, accidentally turned herself green thanks to a fake

tan blunder. The 18-year-old Equine management student claims she purchased a bottle of St Moriz 1 Hour Fast Tan in the shade Darker Thank Dark as it was the only one left in the shop. This was her first error, her second was to slather it on and sleep in the product instead of washing it off as the instructions advised. Lilly said: “People were calling me Fiona from Shrek because my ginger hair and green skin all matched with her. “Because I am ginger my skin is very, very light. If I go

out in the sun I just burn instantly. To get around this I fake tan. I don’t normally use a tan this dark but it was the only one left in the shop, so I decided to give it a go. “I ended up using the whole bottle. After the second layer, I did think it was a bit dark but I decided to keep going. “I slept in it and the next morning I had a shower and the water just kept running green for ages. Every time I washed for the next few days the water running off me was still green. - MIRROR

She said the husband grabbed the hoe and threw it at his wife and it hit her

with the sharp side at he back of her head and she suffered a deep cut. “Their son in law separated the fighting couple. They both went to the Masase police base to get a police report so that they could be attended to at the health center. They were referred to Masase hospital and were later transferred to Gwanda provincial Hospital,” she said. Inspector Mangena said the husband was discharged after receiving treatment while the wife was transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital as her condition was not improving. She said her condition deteriorated and she died on 1 February leading to the arrest of her husband. “We appeal to members of the public to refrain from violence and try to tolerate each other. A life has been lost over a very petty issue which could have been solved without violence,” she said. The Chronicle.

After years of silence, Justin Timberlake apologises to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson AFTER years of criticism for his treatment of Britney Spears and Janet Jackson, pop star Justin Timberlake released a rare apology on Friday morning on his Instagram account saying, "I know I failed." "The industry is flawed. It sets men, especially white men, up for success. It's designed this way. As a man in a privileged position I have to be vocal about this," he wrote to his nearly 60 million followers. "Because of my ignorance, I

didn't recognise it for all that it was while it was happening in my own life but I do not want to ever benefit from others being pulled down again." Timberlake's apology comes a week after the release of "Framing Britney Spears," a New York Times-produced documentary about her conservatorship battle that also dove into Spears's rise as one of the world's biggest pop stars - as well as the misogynistic culture that tried to tear her down. - IOL

ma: Korean drama added to the visual feast TopStar offered to the audience. Just like the hit 'The General’s Daughter' previously broadcast on the same channel, 'Descendant of the Sun' combines factors of romance, military skirmishes, action, international politics, and criminal intrigues, which makes it stand out from an ordinary love drama. In addition, friendships had been cemented forever between all these dedicated people. Almost all the characters

in this drama are very admirable; the show is also deeply romantic and rewarding to watch, with gorgeous cinematography. More surprises are in store for the audience, and the tension doesn't really let up until near the very end of the last episode, with a very apropos epilogue, typical of this writer's ironic style of humour. The series was a major hit in South Korea where it drew a peak audience share of 38.8 percent. It received several awards,

The new music is scheduled to be available on all streaming platforms while the book will also be available in soft copy and audio. When asked to elaborate more on his forthcoming projects, the rapper lamented that the song

was inspired by his wife. It talks about a person with great potential who gets trapped in a black box. He further described it as a song for everyone who when they try to take a step gets reminded of past mistakes or someone stuck in a toxic space and can't seem to move on. More interestingly when asked about the book, the rapper mentioned that the book will be a compilation of anonymous stories by different married men who get to share their experiences and encouragement. He definitely can't wait for these two projects to debut and hopes everyone embraces the two projects.

HIS past Tuesday was World Wetlands Day, which is commemorated annually on February 2nd. This year’s commemoration was held under the theme “Wetlands and water”.

Wetlands are loosely defined as distinct ecosystems that are flooded by water, either permanently or seasonally, and include places like swamps and floodplains. Zambia has several wetlands which account for approximately 19% of the country’s total area. Eight (8) of these, including the Kafue Flats, Bangweulu Swamps and the Barotse Floodplains have been designated as wetlands of international importance under the RAMSAR convention on wetlands. In view of this, we had a chat with Mr. Mwape Sichilongo, Southern African Floodplains Regional Manager at the International Crane Foundation/Endangered Wildlife Trust in Zambia, who explained the key role wetlands play in our day-to-day life and how some of our actions are harming them.

Why are wetlands so important? Mr. Sichilongo says the importance of wetlands can be summed up in three key points. The first being that wetlands are of crucial ecological importance. He says, “They perform a variety of important ecosystem functions like providing specialized habitats where many plant and animal species that are adapted to their conditions can thrive.” He points out that some of these plants and animals are endemic (unique) to their ecosystems and cannot be found anywhere else. This is the case for the Kafue Lechwe, which only exists on the Kafue Flats and nowhere else in the world. “Wetlands are also home to large congregations of resident and migratory water birds. The Kafue Flats, for instance, are home to about 30% of the global population of Wattled Cranes”, adds Mr. Sichilongo. Another component of their ecological significance is that wetlands also support human life. “They provide building materials, like reeds and grass, used by local communities to build houses. Wetlands also provide local communities with essential nutrients from fish, plants and other animals”, he explains. Wetlands also help to regulate floods by absorbing

COMMEMORATING WETLANDS DAY WITH MWAPE SICHILONGO excess rainfall and are an important freshwater reservoir which supply water to larger towns and cities, like Lusaka. The second point is that wetlands are economically important. “They support agriculture and provide critical grazing land for livestock”, says Mr. Sichilongo. He adds, “Wetlands that have wildlife, such as the Kafue Flats, Barotse Floodplains and Bangweulu Wetlands, are also important for tourism. He reveals that in terms of fishing, wetlands like the Kafue Flats are of national importance. The Kafue Flats provides up to 20% of the national fishery requirement”, he explains. This creates employment and sustainable livelihoods for local communities and traders in big cities like Lusaka. Lastly, wetlands are culturally important. “In as much as wetlands are ecologically and economically important, they are also culturally very important”, reveals Mr. Sichilongo. “There are people and communities that live there, they perform ceremonies there, their livelihoods depend on the wetland and most importantly, their identity is associated with the character of the wetland”. An example here is the Kuomboka traditional ceremony of the Lozi people, which celebrates the movement of the Litunga from his palace at Lealui in the Barotse Floodplain to Limulunga palace on higher ground. And since the Kafue Flats hold around 30% of the global population of wattled cranes,

Zambians can be proud of holding this global heritage. What are we doing that’s harming wetlands? Wetlands are sensitive systems that depend on delicate balance, which can be upset by certain human activities. According to Mr. Sichilongo, the major threat to wetlands

across the country is that they are being exploited unsustainably. “Overharvesting of resources within wetlands is a serious issue”, he explains. “This includes overfishing and high levels of poaching for the illegal bushmeat trade, which compromises the availability of resources to the plants, animals and local

communities that depend on wetlands.” He adds, “At the moment, there’s too much poaching of the Kafue Lechwe for the illegal bushmeat market in Lusaka. As a result, the population of this unique animal is decreasing dramatically that in the last 50 years the population has shrunk by over 80%. He adds that the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW, formally ZAWA) is now warning that we deplete the Kafue Flats of all its Lechwe if we don’t change and regulate the way the Lechwes are being harvested, as provided by the Zambia Wildlife Act. Poaching is rampant across most of Zambia’s wetlands and in many cases, it threatens some endemic species, to the brink of extinction. What’s worse is that some methods of poaching like wire snaring and poisoning harm even unintended species. “Some wetlands are being drained for agriculture and people are putting up structures that are not conducive for wetlands, which means their ecological function is disturbed as they cannot keep water as they are designed to do”, says Mr. Sichilongo. He adds that another threat to wetlands is high levels of pollution from agriculture, mining and other industries, which compromises the quality of water in the wetlands. There is also evidence of overfishing in the Kafue Flats due to increased demand for fish, which is threatening fish population. Declining wet-

land quality and quantity has immediate and long-term effects on biodiversity and human livelihoods How can we use wetlands wisely? In 1991, Zambia became a Contracting Party to the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. To realize the much-desired wise use of wetlands and their resources, Mr. Sichilongo advises that, “it is important to work with all stakeholders in different sectors to define what wise-use means and to agree on rules and behaviors that will constitute wise-use, so that we reduce the current levels of extraction and exploitation which are threatening the Kafue Flats and other wetlands across the country.” To this end, the International Crane Foundation has entered in a 20-year co-management agreement with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) for the restoration of the Kafue Flats. The priorities are enhancing capacity for law enforcement, park management and restoration, and effective community engagement. The conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and their resources has immediate and long-term benefits to humankind.

NO BE FROM HIA By Namwanja Margaret Chikwabi

N

O Be From Hia (2nd edition, 2020) is the debut novel by Natasha Omokhodion-Kalulu Banda. The story involves three generations of the Ayomide and Kombe families. They are Zambia-Nigerian-Jamaican powerhouse families. The three main characters are cousins Maggie Ayomide and Bupe Kombe, and Grandmother Margaret. The experiences of cousins Maggie and Bupe are potrayed as they grow up in different parts of the world from childhood to adulthood. The reader is also led through the cousins’ relationships with family members and their respective significant others. This story spans pre-colonial Zambia and England to post-2017 and it is set at different times in Chinsali, Lusaka, Lagos and London. There are many themes running through No Be From Hia. Identity and the search for belonging and fulfillment are two of them. Betrayal and its consequences, family secrets and the unsaid things we all suspect in our relationships and families are sewn throughout the book as well. Ultimately, it’s a story about acceptance and love (of self and others). This novel is a delicious feast and one finds themselves savouring each sentence, each page. There is a welcome non-othering of Zambian terms like munkoyo and impwa in the book. In other words, no italics are used for these non-Engligh terms as has been customary in

literature. The words in our local languages are just as valid and centred as the English words. One example of this combined enjoyment of the writing and centering of local words is found on page 10. At this point, we find Maggie living in Lusaka in 1991 as she narrates the following scene: “I’m now in grade three, and I’ve almost forgotten the rhythmic thump-thump of dad’s heartbeat through the freshly pressed button-down shirt of and the croon of his voice as he read to me before bedtime. His chin was always prickly after a shave, and I’d push my finger into the dimple at its centre when he came back from the barber. I float out od my room, still hoping that this is an extension of my dream, that I will wake again to realise it’s not happening. The hem of my floral nightdress shakes violently. I stand still, trembling, unable to take in what I see. Our once perfect world is now upside down. My mother stands at an angle, her neck in the forceful crook of my father’s left arm, like the innocent person in the movies whose body is being used as a bullet shield. My father holds a knife to her neck. To be more accurate, a sand knife, the one Ba Mailesi uses to prepare thickly buttered bread in the mornings, to cut through chicken thighs and backs as she makes us stew, nshima and impwa. The sand knife which she so carefully rubs against the dry rock outside the kitchen door to ensure it is sharp

enough to slice through bone. Its tip now pierces the soft skin of my mother’s neck, drawing a thin line of blood.” In her writing style, Natasha Omokhodion-Kalulu Banda moves between space, time, characters, and stories while keeping the overall narrative going seamlessly- that is genius on her part. The book is beautifully paced, and the experiences the characters go through are relatable. Nuggets of Zambian historical facts add flavour to the flow of the story, such as the car Prime Minister Kenneth Kaunda rode in at independence being called the Kwacha Car with white leather seats and left-hand drive. Also impressive is how the author gets right that nuance in language and dialect when the characters speaking are Nigerians or living in London, as examples. The reader is drawn into, and engrossed in, this world that the author has created. I deliberately slowed down my reading because I did not want this book to end. No Be From Hia should be on everyone’s to-read-list. It is a wellresearched debut novel and an accomplished piece of work from Natasha Omokhodion-Kalulu Banda. The manuscript of No Be From Hia was deservedly selected as a Graywolf Africa Prize finalist in 2019. In addition, the book’s worldwide distribution rights were picked up by Blackbird Books of South Africa. I’m looking forward to what Natasha OmokhodionKalulu Banda produces next.

VALENTINE’S DAY IS ABOUT OBLIGATION NOT LOVE

I

T feels like when you feel that you have dodged one Valentine's day and managed to get through it, the next one is already here. The day is sort of like the KRA filing returns deadline which catches you by surprise every year and all you can think about is getting it over with because of the hefty fines. It's not love that people are opposed to though, in most cases. People like being in love. People like it when common sense momentarily leave their bodies and know that bad decisions will prelude. The same people love the "take my bank account and MPESA pin and let me show you where my secret plots are" sort of madness which makes us humans a specimen in dumb psychology. Love brings in the delirium and the alternative world of fantasies and an imagined future together. Aristophanes, a comic play-

wright in Athens, in Plato's symposium, in between bouts of alcohol, gave a long memorable speech explaining our source of love and desire for each other- "Love is born into every human being; it calls back the halves of our original nature together; it tries to make one out of two and heal the wound of human nature. Each of us, then, is a 'matching half' of a human whole… and each of us is always seeking the half that matches him." The connection between love and Valentine's is fast and loose and men are stuck in a social construct. A few years ago, RetailMeNot, which is the largest digital coupon provider in the US, released survey data surrounding what consumers want for the day. Of those in relationships, 70 percent of the women surveyed preferred receiving a gift over sex. They wanted the men

to put in the work and effort into something thoughtful and romantic. Would you like to guess what the men felt? If you're a Kenyan man, I don't think you'll be surprised—66 percent of men preferred sex over a gift. I think 69 percent would have been the perfect number but the numbers are what they are. A different survey by the National Retail Federation found that most men (63 percent) and some women (31 percent) felt obligated to give a gift to their partner over Valentine and gave in. Couples in newer relationships felt pressured to give gifts than those in old ones. When you look at it that way, this doesn't sound very romantic at all, does it? Most of us first experienced Valentine's Day for the first time in movies, because our homes didn't come with flowers and romance as part of the pack-

age. Then, campus and people would make a killing selling chocolate and cards and you either rushed to buy your "girlfriend" a Valentine's Day gift or someone else would. It was your choice. Then we got to adulthood and it's a massive affair. People at workplaces are competing over who got the biggest bouquet and the women who didn't get gifts, will sometimes send themselves gifts, then pretend to be surprised when they get them. The whole day is a discussion about plans for the evening and the weekend. Which getaways you're planning and when you would take your main girl out and compensate for the day with your side chick, plus the perfect excuse you were to concoct for the main. (Shout out to all the girlfriends celebrating Valentines the weekend before or the weekend after). - DAILYNATION, Kenya

NEVERS MUMBA SHOULD STOP BEING NERVOUS AND GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE Dear Editor,

M

MD President Dr. Nevers Mumba has been quoted by a tabloid publication as saying that the current actions being taken at the Ministry of Health to restore confidence are too minimal compared to the crimes committed against the Zambian people. He is reported to have said cleaning the rot at the Ministry of Health would take political will to stamp out corruption. I find the embattled MMD President’s remarks absurd, farcical and laughable be-

cause cooperating partners have responded with US$2 billion into health coffers, and the public is embracing the changes at MoH. What political will is he imagining? Is Political will at best only if it’s not associated with the PF Government? Changes have been made at the MoH, heads have rolled and confidence is being won back. In all honesty, is Dr. Mumba serious with what he is talking about or he is only blustering? This is why I usually say that the last genuine opposition leader this great nation had was late President Michael

Chilufya Sata because the current crop of opposition leaders are nothing but political clowns. We have serial opposers who oppose only for the sake of the word. To them appreciating the good done by Government is a taboo. Everyone is appreciating what Dr. Jonas Chanda is doing at the Ministry of Health. Dr. Mumba must never play maverick. Giving the Republican President and Minister of Health little pats on the back for the job well done is not a sign of nervousness and it won’t hurt anybody. MARVELLOUS SAKALA.

Dr. Mumba

Katuka’s malicious corruption falsehoods irresponsible Dear Editor, IT is laughable that a politician who commands insignificant following in UPND, Secretary General Stephen Katuka could drag the Patriotic Front in the alleged offer to ditch the opposition for the ruling party. Mr Katuka alleges that he was offered K3 million, a car, a house and a job as gratification to induce him ditch the opposition for the ruling party. From the outset, we believe that Mr Katuka ought to know that corruption constitutes a criminal offence which compels him to report the same to

appropriate authorities. It is therefore grossly irresponsible for him to merely give a blanket statement without taking steps to bring it to the attention of the Anti-Corruption Commission. Other than the continued trend by UPND to maliciously scandalise the PF, we hold the view that the claims by Mr Katuka are unrealistic. The PF has firmly lived by its commitment to uphold national values and principles thus it is a figment of imagination that resources which are desperately needed can be directed towards enriching Mr Katuka. We challenge Mr Katuka to come out in

open and state whether he is indirectly soliciting for the retirement package comprising K3 million, a car, a house and possibly a job in Government other than making those misguided assumptions. We urge him to make use of the various empowerment programmes that have been initiated by President Edgar Lungu’s government other than making malicious hallucinations. We have no doubt in or mind that Mr Katuka deeply knows from the bottom of his heart that the claims have no stain of truth but he is seeking political relevance by using the PF as a catalyst. We have also noted that

there is a growing dissent against him by some quarters against him within UPND thus he might be at the verge of seeking refuge in the PF. Therefore Mr Katuka should seek the political relevance from the PF in a more responsible manner. We also wish to remind Mr Katuka that the PF is an all-inclusive organisation that would extend an olive branch to him should he decide to join. We are glad he has seen it as one of the attractive political organisations he is considering to associate himself with. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI, Lusaka.

MANY political aspirants the world over often misunderstand the enormous influence citizens command during an electoral process. We saw the reality of this play out in the 2020 American presidential elections where the people took it upon themselves to sensitise their neighbours, parents, children, grandparents, siblings and even their dogs of the presumed danger the American dream was facing in the hands of its immediate past president. Whether or not the country is better off with its decision post-election is not the more important thing in the context of election; it is whether they are actively owning the responsibility to make that decision. The Office of the Citizen is the most important - and should be the most powerful office in any society. For far too long, the political elite have stopped listening to voters and delivering on their primary job: to build consensus, persuade and convince. Understanding this broken social contract on the part of the politicians and listening whilst creating a more appealing narrative for the candidate is one role that many politicians ignore once they are sworn into office. Therefore in 2015, many people were aghast about how Nigeria, predominantly a youth population voted for a 70-year-old ex-general. How did this happen? RED | For Africa, was able to marshal all communication efforts so that the aspirations of the Nigerian people for their leader were reflected in the campaign messaging of President Muhammadu Buhari. The team understood that citizens deserve more than the elite posture of arrogance and deafness. And if any of the political parties vying for the highest office in Zambia come August are to emerge victorious, this is the approach they need to adopt. Though the youth demography is important, there are other population segments that could potentially cause a serious shift at the polls. Zambia all has a voting population of which 60 percent are women, so it goes without saying that they are a crucial part of any electoral process. Take America for example, in 2012, 53 percent of the voters were women which essentially meant that one in every two voters in the country was a woman. And 55 percent of those women cast their vote in favour of Barack Obama. They did this because they were not only an important segment of Obama’s campaign; which made it a point at every to

turn to show how much it cared about their economic survival. There must be a deliberate attempt to bolster women participation in Zambian politics and I do not mean by simply increasing the number of female cabinet appointees in government and handing them fringe portfolios. From participating in the voting exercise to local government and parliament offices, women must have critical decision-making roles. This is why action committees like; the Women’s Lobby must be supported in strengthening inclusive growth. Authenticity also matters. Voters care deeply about a candidate who is honest, truthful, and most importantly, humane. Can they see themselves in you? Do you project an image that stimulates their attention? Because humans are imperfect beings; they laugh, cry, are frustrated, make mistakes, and are unafraid to own it. This serves as one of the pillars that improve a candidate’s chances with the electorate.

Another key issue is the quality of a message. The outcome of an election may lie in the ability of any political party to align their message to the purpose of their candidacy. Many candidates confuse or replace their message with a laundry list of issues they believe the electorate cares about. The electorate desperately want something to believe in that is bigger than themselves. It is now up to the Zambian political aspirants to inspire the people with a message that they can all get behind – a message that encapsulates the plight of the common man and a solution all wrapped up in one. ________________________

Man jailed for over ‘arsenal”

JEALOUSY EX-HUBBY DRAGGED TO COURT FOR ASSAULT By MULENGA MUSONDA

A

JEALOUS man is appearing in the Choma Fast Track Court for Gender Based Violence on allegations of strangling his ex-wife after learning that she was seeing another man following their divorce. In this matter, Nchimunya Lumang’ombe, 34 of Namwala is accused of

assault occasioning actual bodily harm contrary to the laws of Zambia. Allegations are that on December 20, 2020 in Choma, Lumang’ombe assaulted Ms Koviness Silucha and thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm. According to the victim, Lumang’ombe assaulted her whilst she was in the fields. She said when he approached her, he uttered

words that “she would not see the sun set on that day” before he brutally beat and strangled her neck before she escaped. Ms Silucha, who was wearing a neck collar and has been referred to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka for specialised treatment informed the court that the two divorced. Her evidence was backed by her mother when she

A FARMER, aged 56, has been convicted and sentenced to 24 months imprisonment with hard labour for having appeared before a traditional court carrying two spears and a knife because he was at loggerheads with someone in the village. Bidence Chilumbi of Chief Mapanza’s chiefdom was convicted by Principal Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo. She suspended the sentence for 12 months in which he is not to commit any similar offence. In this matter, Chilumbi was charged with one count of possession of offensive weapons contrary to section 85(1) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia. Allegations are that Chilumbi on June 17, 2020 in Choma had in his possession two spears and one knife without lawful authority. According to facts on record, Chilumbi appeared before the Chief’s Traditional Court on the material date with the weapons

also testified on how she found her daughter lying on the ground after the alleged assault and insisted before the court that there was no marriage between the two.. But earlier when Lumang’ombe took plea before Magistrate Muyambango Munukayumbwa, he stated that the two fought after he found his wife committing adultery. Trial continues.

Blanket nipped through window, court heard By MULENGA MUSONDA

A WOMAN narrated in the Choma Magistrates Court how she was awoken by a cool breeze around 02: 00 hours only to discover that her blanket had been hooked out by a burglar through the window. Ms Juliet Kabalata was testifying in a case in which 29-year-old Ernest Mainza was convicted by Principal Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo for the offence of bur-

glary and theft contrary to the laws of Zambia. Particulars of the offence are that Mainza on the night of January 31, 2021 broke into Ms Kabalata’s house with intent to steal and stole therein a blanket and bed sheet valued at K575. When the matter came up for facts, Magistrate Mupemo found the accused person guilty in his own admission and convicted him accordingly.

2 pupils in court for stealing wigs? By MULENGA MUSONDA

TWO secondary school pupils are on the verge of appearing before the High Court for allegedly staging a robbery and getting away with wigs valued at over K300. Donald Mwaanga 20, a Grade 11 pupil and his 17-year-old accomplice who is in Grade 12 appeared in the Choma Magistrates Court charged with one count of aggravated robbery contrary to section 294, Chapter 87 of the Penal Code of the laws of Zambia. Allegations are that the two with others unknown stole 10 wigs and a disc all valued at K320, the property of Ms Beauty Ngonji. It is alleged that the two used actual violence before or after stealing the items to overcome resistance or retain

the stolen items. The incident is said to have occurred on November 27, 2020 in Choma and the two have remained in custody since, a revelation that angered the court. The magistrate called for the arresting officer and the probation officer to explain why the matter took long to be brought to court. When the two appeared for explanation of the charge before Principal Resident Idah Mupemo, they said they understood. The court explained to them that their charge is only triable in the High Court and they will have to wait for instructions from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The matter was adjourned to February 19, for mention as the court awaits the instructions

According to the facts read by public prosecutor Charles Chinzai, the victim was awoken by a cool breeze on her body despite closing all the doors and windows. When she was finally awake, she found that the blanket and bed sheet on the bed were missing and the window open. Mainza was caught a few days later with another person trying to sell the blanket. Magistrate Mupemo sentenced him to 18 months with

hard labour to send a right signal to would-be burglars.

which he said after being questioned that he has had them since 2016 because of one person he could not see eye to eye to within the village. But in defence, he testified that he carried the weapons to show the court that they were used for bee keeping and gardening, and that he was skilled in the craft of making spears and knives. When the matter came up for judgment, Magistrate Mupemo found his defence to be untruthful as his reasons lacked logic. She was shocked that a man of his age who should be championing peace was instead an advocate of violence. She sentenced him to 24 months imprisonment with hard labour but suspended the sentence for 12 months in which he is not to commit any similar offence.

CHARGE In this matter, Chilumbi was charged with one count of possession of offensive weapons contrary to section 85(1) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

Murder conspiracy accused committed to High Court By MULENGA MUSONDA

THE Choma Magistrates Court has finally received instructions to commit a 59-year-old farmer who has been languishing in remand custody since September to the High Court to answer to allegations of conspiring to commit murder. Resident Magistrate Ethel

Phiri who warned the State that a preliminary inquiry would be conducted if instructions were not received at the next sitting committed Wallace Kandila to the High Court after the State presented the committal certificates to both the accused person and the court. Kandila, a resident of Simaubi Village of Chief

Mapanza’s chiefdom is charged with conspiracy to commit murder contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia. Allegations are that on July 28, 2020, Kandila and Distro Munachoonga conspired to kill Ms Foster Chilinga. When the matter came up

LEICESTER FIGHT BACK TO BEAT LIVERPOOL

LEICESTER City staged an astonishing late comeback to beat Liverpool as the Premier League champions collapsed and paid the price for another defensive calamity involving keeper Alisson. Liverpool looked to be cementing their top-four aspirations when Mohamed Salah put them ahead after 67 minutes with a clever finish after a piece of individual brilliance in the penalty area by Roberto Firmino. ZESCO CLAIM BRAGGING RIGHTS …as Buildcon, Warriors and Eagles miss ABSA

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

N

DOLA giants Zesco United claimed the bragging rights in Ndola after coming from behind to beat rivals Buildcon FC 3-1 in a fiercely contested Ndola derby at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium yesterday. Goals from Zimbabwean international Thabani Kamukoso, an own goal from Brian Mwila and a late strike from Enock Sakala gifted Zesco United a win which propelled them to third on the 18-team Super Division table. The unmarked Kamusoko on the far post blasted in a Kelvin Kampamba corner past Ndjana to restore parity after

midfielder Najeeb Abbas had tapped in from close range to give Buildcon the lead in the seventh minute. Jesse Were almost put Zesco ahead in the 18th minute but was denied by keeper Tresor Ndjana as the first half ended 1-1.With five minutes into the second half, Zesco United finally went ahead thanks to Brian Mwila’s own goal after the striker directed Kelvin Kampamba’s free kick into his own goal. Sakala put the icing on the cake three minutes after replacing Were in the 87th minute to give Zesco a 3-1 win which propelled them to third on the Super Division table with 28 points, one point behind leaders ZANACO who

settled for a 1-1 draw with Red Arrows at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka. Joseph Phiri cancelled Moses Phiri’s goal which had given the Banker’s the lead in the 73rd minute as the two sides shared the spoils to move to 29 and 20 points respectively. Meanwhile, in the first game of the double header at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, Indeni and Kabwe Warriors were involved in a 0-0 draw. Forest Rangers missed a chance to claim top spot on the Super Division table after losing 1-0 to Nkwazi at Edwin Imboela Stadium in Lusaka. Defender Pride Mwansa’s 10th minute goal was all the Zambia Police-sponsored outfit needed to recover from two

consecutive defeats to Nkana and NAPSA Stars. At the President Stadium in Kabwe, Green Buffaloes survived a lynching and almost gave Prison Leopards their first home loss as the two sides played to a 2-2 stalemate. In Choma, Amity Shamende and Collins Mulenga scored in both halves of the game while Musonda Siame scored the consolation goal as Green Eagles beat Lumwana Radiants 2-1 to move to eighth position with 20 points. Today’s Super Division games will see Lusaka Dynamos hosting Young Green Eagles at Nkoloma Stadium while Power Dynamos are scheduled to meet Kitwe United in a Kitwe derby.

Leicester - who were not at their best even though Jamie Vardy missed two glorious first-half chances - suddenly bounced off the canvas to sink the champions with three goals in a chaotic seven-minute period. The Foxes saw a 78th-minute penalty award ruled out by the video assistant referee and even though James Maddison's resulting free-kick found its way into the net past Alisson it was initially ruled out for an offside against

Daniel Amartey before being given after a VAR check. Leicester's second three minutes later was another horror show for Liverpool keeper Alisson, whose poor clearances contributed to two goals in Manchester City's win at Anfield last Sunday. This time the Brazilian recklessly dashed out to clear Youri Tielemans' long ball, only to farcically crash into debutant defender Ozan Kabak, leaving Vardy to run the ball into an empty net. – BBC.

Nkana, Napsa chase continental glory By MICHAEL MIYOBA

AFTER struggling to impress in the recent MTN/ FAZ Super Division games, defending champions Nkana FC and NAPSA Stars continue their CAF Confederations Cup races as the two Zambian envwoys’ bid to storm the group stages of the continental championships receives final tests. Nkana who relegated to the Confederations Cup after losing to Petro De Luanda of Angola in the CAF Champions League are scheduled to host struggling TAS de Casablanca at Nkana Stadium while, NAPSA Stars are in Kenya where they are scheduled to face Gor Mahia in a pre-group stage fixture in Nairobi. It is a crucial test for the Kitwe side who have been in the news for the wrong reasons as reports suggesting that they are going through some financial challenges which may affect their performance in the Confederations Cup. However Nkana coach Kelvin Kaindu who has declared his charges ready for the Moroccans said the Kitwe giants will have to be careful not to underrate their opponents as they try to recover from a defeat to Buildcon in their last game. Kaindu said it would be a grave mistake to think of

Casablanca as underdogs because the Moroccans can be dangerous as they have shown in their previous games in the CAF competition. “Out biggest problem has been complacency. There has been reports about the team we are playing as they are playing for the first time in the CAF Confederations Cup and they play in the lower league in Morocco but they haven’t been here by default. I think they deserve to be here. “They are not a push over as they won 4-0 against a team from Guinea so if we take them like any other African competitor we can rise to the occasion,” Kaindu said. He said they will have to use the home ground to their advantage to protect their unbeaten record at Nkana Stadium. And TAS de Casablanca coach Talib Abdul said his squad will fight hard to get a win in Zambia to honuor Moroccan football. Abdul said the Moroccan outfit are not in Zambia as tourists but as competitors who will do their best to get a positive result against the Zambian champions who boast of having an unbeaten record at Nkana Stadium in the continental games. Meanwhile, NAPSA Stars coach Mohamed Fathi said the pensioners are determined to get a positive result in Kenya to make history by storming the CAF Confederations Cup group stage. Fathi said NAPSA Stars is motivated by an injury-free squad which has prepared adequately and has a plan to execute in Kenya.
