… We’re threatened with deportations when we don’t give credit to locals – Rwandan trader By FRANCIS CHIPALO RWANDAN traders among foreign businessmen in Lusaka have disclosed that they are threatened with deportations as illegal immigrants if they refuse to give out goods on credit to the local people.

The businessmen are mostly from Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda who run grocery and liquor stores in most residential areas of the city. Zambia and Lusaka in particular has in the recent past seen an influx of foreign nationals who have become successful businessmen in the townships. (To page 3)

ELECTIONS AND YOUTHS

BISHOP Patrick Chisanga of the Mansa Catholic Diocese has raised a pertinent point that we feel all political parties must address seriously. It is a question that they should not gloss over, that it should be “business as usual,” as doing so could be disastrous for the country. Bishop Chisanga has challenged all political parties to have a clear roadmap on how they will involve young people in this year’s elections scheduled for August 12. They must state whether the youth will be assigned a positive role during the campaign or act as physical enforcers to forcibly coerce the electorate to join their ranks. What happened in Kitwe during the Youth Day celebrations must act as a stark reminder of what could be in store if youths are left to their own whims without direction – uncalled for violence In the Kitwe incident, United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres tried to disrupt the Youth Day celebrations at the City Square The youth, who were in buses and clad in UPND regalia, attempted to force their way past the gathering at City Square, while chanting “we want change” slogans. When their evil intentions were thwarted, they became unruly and started throwing stones at police officers and damaged one of their vehicles. UPND’s Copperbelt Information and Publicity Secretary, Lawrence Mwanza, however blamed the police for the fracas saying the cadres were on their way to the secretariat when officers started firing teargas canisters. We do not agree with this explanation for even the Police realise that this was a special day for the youth and there was no way they could just fire teargas canisters without a reason for they were expected to be among their peers They UPND youths were unruly and their intention from the start was to disrupt the celebrations because as far as they were concerned, it was a Patriotic Front function. They have this misconception because that is what their leaders have made them believe. They cannot differentiate what is national and partisan. This is the more reason Bishop Chisanga Bishop stressed that political parties should make use of the potential which young people have and not mislead them by engaging in political violence. The Bishop, speaking during Youth Mass on Friday at the Mansa Cathedral to mark this year’s Youth Day, said they should be fully involved in the governance of the country as opposed to just using them as political ladders. With the country heading for elections, it is important that political parties keep a tight watch on the activities of some of their young cadres with a penchant for violence. “When we look at the young people we should be looking at them as people who can bring positive change in the country and whom we need to properly guide and groom,” said Bishop Chisanga. When their leaders stop their toxic language and speak about peaceful existence across the political divide, we do not see how youths could resort to violence. While President Edgar Lungu has promised that he would ensure there is peace before and after the August 12 elections, the other political players must also play their part. Each political leader owes it to the nation to see that their followers go about the campaigns in a peaceful manner, that the political differences do not mean that blood must be shed. Youths must be made to understand this.

THE story of the United Party for National Development (UPND) has been characterised by failed attempts to unite with others and oust the ruling parties from power since 2006. Over 50 parties have been registered in the past decade along with many more waiting for the Registrar of Societies’ approval ahead of the general elections this year. According to some observers, this is proof of what President Edgar Lungu has described as “progressive democracy” – or the freedom to create opportunities to oppose his party’s policies. However, some opposition campaigners and pro-UPND NGOs believe that allowing

Yet, Zambians are observing a situation where one of the opposition parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) expelled its president Mr Chishimba Kambwili for rejecting to be in an alliance with the UPND. The NDC Secretary-General Ms Bridget Atanga confirmed the development at a media briefing. She also said that Mr Kambwili was no longer president of the party and the general membership would go ahead and work with the UPND-led alliance. She added that Mr Kambwili’s conduct lately, had been questionable and she claimed that he himself, had told her that he couldn’t work with the UPND president Mr Hakainde Hichilema and would rather go back to the PF.

Mr Kambwili This followed Mr Kambwili’s protest over the decision by other opposition political parties to form an alliance and call it the UPND Alliance because in his view, it was disrespectful of other partnering-political parties. However, his moves in the last few months have rewritten the Zambian political script, and unsettled many UPND supporters on the Copperbelt. A former trusted ally of Mr Hichilema who faithfully served as the NDC’s president in the alliance, Mr Kambwili had done the unimaginable. He abandoned his alliance partner just when his Bembaspeaking support base mattered most, yet keeping the NDC at arm’s length from the UPND Alliance for now. Province Central

that mimicked warlord-like recruiting strategies and tactics employed by warlords when recruiting child-soldiers in most conflict-prone regions of Africa. Whilst, the UPND lawmakers vociferously focused their extraordinary energies on fighting the Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 10 of 2019 inside and outside Parliament at the expense of seeking to secure NRCs for their party’s would-be firsttime voters. The PF also wondered where UPND candidates would get the votes from, after key vote-winning Bembaspeaking leaders have decamped from their alliance and rejoined the ruling party. In PF’s arithmetic, it now controls seven provinces, giving it Central, Copperbelt, Eastern, Luapula, Lusaka, Muchinga and Northern provinces in the bag. A PF in-house statistician claimed that the ruling party would win by over 52 percent of the vote, come August 12. For the moment though, Zambian registered voters are between a rock and a hard place – between a PF-government seemingly entrenched in office and a myriad of smaller parties seemingly entrenched in an opposition UPND Alliance.

opponents as the “coalition of the failed-attempts.” owing to the UPND leader’s five-time failed-attempts at Zambia’s presidency, it is yet the team to watch in the numbers game by registered voters. It is common knowledge that the UPND Alliance not only prides itself on being the “cyberspace generation,” due to its bevy of online millennial youthful supporters born after 2000, it also claims that “it has the numbers” of registered voters on its side. The UK-based SABI Strategy Group and South African-based Brenthurst Foundation’s cyberspace propagandists coined the slogan, “Bally-1 will fix it!” That begs the question: Will this slogan be no empty threat? The alliance really thinks it is going to win the elections, based on its calculations of the registration of voters nationally. Because there is a long-established voting pattern in the country based on ethnicity, the UPND Alliance thinks “the numbers” are on its side. But in contrast to this, the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s recently released provisional voter registration statistics showed that the PF presidential candidate may garner more than 50 percent of the votes in not less than five provinces, to win the race.

But is Mr Kambwili either being isolated or shooting himself in the foot? Worth noting though, the ruling party’s biggest challenge is the UPND Alliance, which is made up of oneman and newly-formed political parties such as the Republican Progressive Party, Alliance for Democracy and Development, and other smaller parties. So, is NDC at arm’s length from this alliance? While this alliance has been dubbed by critics and

As expected, commenting on this, UPND vicepresident Mutale Nalumango complained that the ECZ should be ashamed of itself for failing to ensure a fair voter registration process. Ms Nalumango added that the statistics indicated that some provinces were deliberately disadvantaged. This, however, was rubbished by the ruling party, which wondered why this time around the UPND abandoned its 2016 massive underage first-time voter mobilisation techniques

Locals blackmail foreign traders FROM PAGE 1 Mr Joseph Kay (not real names), from Rwanda who has been in Zambia since 2018 disclosed in an interview that life has not been easy for him as a businessman as he faces threats of being reported as an illegal immigrant when he refuses to give credit to Zambians. He said this at times happens even when one has valid documentation for stay from the Ministry of Home Affairs. He said in an interview on condition of anonymity that some Zambians take advantage of people like him by wanting to borrow from their shops without any intentions of paying back. “They should understand that us as business people we don’t get goods for free at wholesales so how do they expect us to survive if they don’t pay back our credit? You cannot run a business like that. “Some of my friends are owed huge sums of money in credit by locals and have lost out just like that because when you ask for your money, what you will get are all kinds of threats and insults when you were trying to help out that person in the first place,” he said. Mr Kay said as a foreigner, he was also trying to make a living just like every other person. And two of his colleagues from Mtendere compound shared the same complaints as Mr Kay in separate interviews. And a Zambian who also spoke on condition that her identity is withheld observed that the complaint by the traders was genuine. “I have on several occasions heard and seen my fellow Zambians taking advantage of our friend’s because of their statuses as foreigners and I feel that is very unfair but I am not saying we should allow illegal immigrants but what I am saying is that let us not take advantage of people’s situations and capitalise on them,” she said.

Sangwa committing treason - Tutwa By SILUMESI MALUMO UPND-aligned lawyer John Sangwa is committing treason for failing to recognise the duly elected President, Government Deputy Chief Whip Tutwa Ngulube has said. Mr Ngulube also said Mr Sangwa, a State Counsel, was committing a serious offence for not recognising laws that allow President Edgar Lungu to contest the general elections. In an interview, Mr Ngulube warned that Mr Sangwa should never blame anyone should he be arrested for treason because he has proved to be a disobedient citizen. Mr Ngulube who is also Kabwe Central Member of Parliament, said lawyers need to set an example of being law abiding citizens unlike what Mr Sangwa was portraying. “As far as we are concerned, Mr John Peter Sangwa is saying President Lungu will constitute treason by filling nominations. ‘But as far as we are concerned it is him (John Sangwa) who is committing treason

because he does not want to recognise a duly elected Head of State and he does not want to recognise the laws of Zambia,” he said. “He is throwing himself into a trap and he has no one to blame if the law takes its course,” Mr Ngulube said. Mr Ngulube also said the Government will use provisions of the laws that restrict lawyers from misleading the public. He said Mr Sangwa lost the case regarding the eligibility of President Lungu but he has continued to mislead the people which needs to stop. And there are also laws that restrict people attacking a lawfully elected Government. So we shall use some of these provisions to bar him from misleading the nation,” he said. And ZANIS reports that Chilubi Member of Parliament Mulenga Fube has charged that the opposition are bringing up the third term debate because they are scared of being defeated by President Edgar Lungu and the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

RETIRE, NEVERS MUMBA TOLD his dismissal from Government. Mr Mulenga explained that after the demise of Zambia’s fifth President, Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata, he went on to contest and polled embarrassing election results during the 2015 presidential by-election. “After failing to unite the party post 2015 elections, Pastor Mumba had a great chance in his political career again when President Edgar Lungu requested to work with a united Movement for Multi-Party Democracy,” said Mr Mulenga. He said instead of building the party, Dr Mumba has continued destroying the party and causing mass exodus of members to other parties.

FROM PAGE 1 Mr Mulenga said Dr Mumba lost track when he left the church, even after telling Zambians that he cannot abandon God’s work to join politics. He encouraged Dr. Mumba to go back to God’s work and running the Church. Mr Mulenga said the MMD leader sold his soul over pieces of Silver by accepting to be norminated and appointed as Republican Vice President by late President Mwanawasa. “As if that was not enough, he fumbled by breaking the international protocols and compromising the warm relationship that had been in existence between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia which led to FROM PAGE 1 Speaking during a meeting held in Kasama yesterday, provincial chairperson Godfrey Bwalya disclosed that the members have resolved to support and follow expelled leader Chishimba Kambwili in an event that he rejoins the PF or stands on his own. Docs hail six-month salaries’ reimbursement By SIMON MUNTEMBA THE Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ) has hailed Government for having amended the appointment letters for doctors and nurses to reflect the actual dates of employment and facilitate the payment of about six-month’ salary arrears. RDAZ president, Dr Isaac Sakala said in an interview the move by Government to reverse the dates was welcomed as it will give the doctors and nurses a basis to claim their money. “We welcome the move by Government to reverse the dates as this gives the doctors a basis to claim their monies,” Dr Sakala said. He said the initial provisional letters of employment from the Ministry of Health were demoralising as it distanced Government from owing the doctors, but an assurance by the Minister of Health that Government will dismantle the six-month arrears was the best news ever for the doctors and nurses. Dr Sakala said the initial provisional letters of employment created a situation where it was like the doctors and nurses did a part time job with the

Dr Chanda Ministry of Health. Dr Sakala’s remarks comes after Government amended the appointment letters for the 309 doctors and 3, 129 nurses to reflect the actual dates of employment and facilitate the payment of about six-months’ salary arrears amounting to approximately K73, 165, 751. Last Thursday, the Minister of Health Dr Jonas Chanda disclosed that the cost of paying salary arrears would be met from the 2021 budget lime for dismantling of arrears. The affected health workers were employed on March 25, 2019, and

deployed in their stations but were only given appointment letters from the Public Service Management Division (PSMD) in September 2019. The letters stated that they were employed on September 1, 2019. The affected doctors and nurses then appealed to President Edgar Lungu in January this year to have their employment normalised for fear that they would lose five months’ worth of wages. Dr Chanda said in a statement that the ministry working with the PSMD and Civil Service Commission has normalised the employment of the affected doctors and nurses.

I have moved my office to the Central Business District (CBD) to personally supervise the Lusaka City Council (LCC) in picking up garbage, mayor of Lusaka Miles Sampa has said. Mr Sampa said he has dedicated seven days to supervise the council workers to ensure the CBD was cleaned-up. Advocates for National Democracy and Development Executive Director Samuel Banda says the organisation has taken note of the many development empowerment programmes initiated by President Lungu. Mr. Banda said the youth should take advantage of these empowerment programmes put in place by the government and venture into various business activities. He encouraged youths to take up business in agricultural and mining which he said have the potential to create employment opportunities and contribute to the creation of tax revenues for national development. "We note that the government President Lungu has initiated several development empowerment programmes across various sectors, hence we would like to urge the youth to take advantage of these programmes and venture into business activities especially in agriculture and mining," he said. Mr Banda commended President Lungu for creating a conducive environment for youths to participate in the economic, governance and national development programmes of the country.

Use ICT to promote tourism, Mushimba challenges PF members Livingstone youths told

By ANDREW MUKOMA

ACTING Livingstone Tourism Association chairperson Hillary Kashempa has urged youths to use Information Communications and Technologies (ICT) to promote Livingstone as the number one tourism destination. Mr Kashempa says ICTs play an important role

in the enhancement of the country’s social and economic sectors. He was speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the media engagement held at the River Club yesterday He said, it was sad that some young people are using ICTs to scandalise and insult other people. Mr Kanshempa said that this is not how ICTs are supposed to be used.

He said that it makes sad reading to learn that young people have not realised the power they have in influencing and selling the city as the tourism end point by using ICTs despite being key partners. Mr Kashempa has however called on youths to take keen interest to learn the history and heritage of the city rather than abusing social media.

I am confident that the Patriotic Front and President Edgar lungu will emerge victorious in the 2021 elections because the ruling party has good intentions for the country unlike the opposition who are driven by hatred, bitterness and jealous. Dr Mushimba urged party members to explain the truth about Covid-19 and its effects on the economy so that people can understand who were being misled by the opposition who thrive on lies. He said people must be informed that Covid-19 was a global challenge which has left economies devastated and claimed millions of lives globally.” And speaking later, Mufulira PF chairman Dominic Mwale said the party had received application letters to contest Kankoyo constituency seat from four members, who included the mayor, Mr Gift Mushinge, Derrick Musonda, Edward Chomba and Mwambona Miti.

MAN BASHES BROTHER FOR SERVING HIM LESS FOOD

IVE me more food or I smash you!

These words could be befitting for the actions of a “greedy” Victoria Falls man who repeatedly punched his younger brother accusing him of giving him a small portion of food. Makhosi Moyo (25) who is employed at Zimpost Victoria Falls branch narrated how on Monday last week his elder brother Mqhelisi Sibanda (30) demanded that he shares a breakfast meal with him. Family dumps corpse at police station CHAOS reigned supreme at Gweru’s Mtapa high density suburb yesterday when aggrieved residents and family members dumped the body of Tatenda Kasinyore, known as “Nyale”, near Monomutapa Police Station entrance where he was detained before falling sick and later dying at a local hospital. Kasinyore (28) allegedly died on Wednesday after being detained at the police station where he had been arrested for an alleged disorderly conduct following a complaint by a fellow resident that he was being a nuisance and throwing stones at her house. The residents and relatives are accusing police officers of having assaulted Kasinyore when he turned violent while he was trying

to resist arrest. Business was temporarily brought to a halt along Gweru-Matobo Road when residents left the body in the middle of the road close to the police station. Police had to fire teargas to disperse residents who were gathered outside the police station while some were marching on the streets after allegedly being influenced by civic society organisations and purported human rights activists who had allegedly hijacked the funeral. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police had to disperse residents who had violated Covid-19 lockdown regulations to have a maximum of 30 people gathering at a funeral. Asst Comm Nyathi said police had to maintain law and order after some un-

The accused then assaulted the complainant several times with fists on the head,” said the prosecutor. - BMETRO

The police arrested him and found him with drugs and he was drunk. They detained him and put him in a holding cell at Monomutapa Police Station. Maid caught bedding employer’s son (10) WITH the nation still reeling in shock after a Harare woman Precious Teya (26) was arrested for bedding a 13-year-old boy, a 21-yearold woman in Bulawayo, who was employed as a maid, might just steal that “depraved” crown after she was also allegedly caught red-handed in the act with her employer’s 10-year-old boy.

Sibanda who however, was not content with what he was given and asked for more. A misunderstanding ensued resulting in the elder brother “disciplining” the complainant. The two stayed together at number 3130 in Chinotimba suburb. Sibanda was charged with physical abuse when he appeared before Victoria Falls magistrate Lindiwe Maphosa. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine months in jail. The magistrate suspended three months for five years on condition of good behaviour before suspending the remain-

she was still in the middle of tutoring the boy on how to poke, his mother entered the room and found the two in the act. The boy’s mother went and reported the matter to the police leading to Mathe’s arrest. Sikhululekile Moyo was married to Owen Moyo who works in Gweru. According to Owen, he and his wife separated after a misunderstanding. They have a child together. But it seems Sikhululekile, whose name literally means to be at peace and free, is not at peace with her ex-husband. According to her troubled former husband Sikhululekile would allegedly phone Owen in the dead of the night and shout at him. As if that was not enough she would also send vitriolic verbal attacks to her ex-husband. The vilification did not end at that. Sikhululekile visited her former sweetheart and found him in the company of his alleged lover. It is said she went berserk and beat them while accusing Owen of infecting her with an STI. Owen had to flee to West Commonage Court and sought a protection order against his ex-wife. Owen told the court that his

ex-wife had a habit of ambushing and beating him together with his female companions. “I am applying for a protection order against Sikhululekile Moyo who is my ex-wife. She harasses me and usually phones me during the dead of the night and insults me. When she meets me walking in the company of a female she would beat her or insult her. She also comes to my workplace and accuses me of not contributing to the upkeep of the child,” he said. Sikhululekile defended herself saying: “I have never harassed him. I only went to his home after I was informed by his relative that he was sitting in the company of his girlfriend. I had to go there because I wanted money for the upkeep of the child and to visit his parents because they love me and still consider me as their daughterin-law.”She added: “I got angry after his girlfriend insulted me. I had to beat her up and I also beat Owen up because I was angry that he infected me with STI after he begged me to have sex with him saying he wants to marry me.” The presiding magistrate granted Owen the protection order against Sikhululekile. Sikhululekile was ordered not to insult Owen and not to send him abusive WhatsApp messages and never to call him. -BMETRO

‘EVERY CHILD HAS RIGHT TO EDUCATION’ By TERENCE MISELO

M

EDIA personality Mutale Mwanza has said she will continue supporting the vulnerable children because she believes every child has the right to education.

Speaking in an interview after she together with two organisations IQRA Zambia Foundation and Let's Make A Difference last Thursday reached out to Kweseki Community School in Lusaka's Garden area and presented various donations to support education. "I honestly believe that every

child has the right to an education. And as a media personality, I am working with different charities to ensure this is realized," said Ms Mwanza in explaining the donation and her partnership with IQRA Foundation Zambia which works with vulnerable children. Through IQRA, Mutale Mwanza learnt about the many challenges Kweseki school was facing among them lack of school stationary, shoes for pupils and lack of desks. She donated K10,000 to IQRA who facilitated the purchase of stationary items for the school and sanitary pads for the teenage girls. Let's Make A Difference joined in to offer educative talks to children on various issues including drug abuse. Mutale also received help

from individuals in support of her cause. "I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Munshya Ponya for donating a Box of educational books to the children, as well as Christine Lubansa for the money sent through my management as a contribution to the well being of the children. Thankyou so so much. Times are hard for us all , but we can share the little we have," Mutale said. Last week again, in a separate incident, Mutale gave out two full scholarships to deserving girls to study at Cavendish University.

FEMALE HIP hop star Bomb$hell Grenade spent her Youth Day celebrations yesterday with a touch of charity work.

According to her music label, Nexus Entertainment, the rapper who recently released her new video ‘ Lockdown’, spent some time at Mapalo School in Kitwe with the Children of Light Foundation. This was done to spread awareness and give away sanitary towels to the girls.

“In many parts of the country especially in rural areas, girls are not prepared and aware about menstruation so they face many difficulties and challenges at home, schools, and work places,” read a caption on Nexus Music Entertainment page showing Bomb$hell interacting with the children. “Girls and women do not have access to sanitary products or they know very little about the types and method of using them or are unable to afford such products due to high cost. So, they mostly rely on reusable cloth pads which they wash and use again.”

Justin Bieber doesn't have a phone JUSTIN Bieber has imposed rules to give him a better work/life balance, and as part of that, he no longer owns a cell phone.

The 27-year-old singer has imposed strict "boundaries" on his professional life, and as well as only communicating with his team via iPad in order to limit the number of people who can get in touch with him, he makes sure he stops working by 6pm in order to spend the evenings with his wife, Hailey Bieber. He said: “I definitely learned how to have boundaries, and I just don’t feel like I owe anybody anything. "That has helped me to be able to just say no and just be firm in it and know that my heart [wants] to help people, but I can’t do everything. I want to sometimes, but it’s just not sustainable.” - IOL

MAGINE a Zambia where we have more high value industries run by local people and we as a country don’t have to import everything from toothpicks to hair dye. Imagine if majority of these players in such industries are women. Our nation would reach high levels of development.

Development that does not only empower women but also promote the local manufacturing industry. This is what media practitioner Katala Lupunga, working closely with Superflex Limited Management is trying to achieve when she conducted the first ever Master Class Women training in the production of local products like detergents and construction materials on International Women’s Day. Katala and team believe that women must take a lead in this venture and help create employment for themselves. Her first training engaged about 14 women in Lusaka most of whom were supported by Lusaka Central Member of Parliament, Margaret Mwanakatwe. “We convey our appreciation to Honorable Margret Mwanakatwe MP for the priceless gesture of sending the women on the 8th March to our First Master Class Women training in Detergents, Construction Products and various Business models,” Katala said after the training which was held at Mika Exotic Hotel in Lusaka’s Chamba Valley. “The main objective of the training

is to build sustenable manufacturing companies, improving living standards and creating employment. We have the capacity as a nation to manufacture basic home products to high tech equipment.” Katala and her team spent time teaching the women how to create these various products and other related information. “The detergents industry is a multi million dollar Industry and a perfect field to establish your business whether small or medium sized. The market for the products are ever on demand. Invest your time and money and start a manufacturing business,” Katala insisted in a message to the women. “Super Flex Master Class is a passionate and self motivated team leading the way and show that an industrous Zambia is possible by offering practical solutions,” she said. “We train and give easy step by step formulation through theories and practicals.” She believes the quest to localise production of various essential products is an undeniable reality and a solution to improve and fuel an export led economy. “Hence, we strive to provide skill, technical support, capacity building and funding to the generation of pioneers wanting to venture in manufacturing,” she said. “We look forward to another edition of our acceralated training series in more than 200 products in detergents, cleaning chemicals, construction and various business models.”

that he is still trying to come to terms with the loss of lead actor Chadwick, who passed away last August aged 43 after a private cancer battle. Ryan said: "I'm still currently going through it. "One thing that I've learned in my short time on this Earth is that it's very difficult to have perspective on something while you're going through it.

“This is one of the more profound things that I've gone through in my life, having to be a part of keeping this project going without this particular person who is like the glue who held it together." The “Creed” filmmaker explained that he has been trying to find a "balance" between his personal and professional life since Chadwick's

passing. Ryan told the Jemele Hill is “Unbothered” podcast: "That said, you have a professional life, you've got a personal life. “Personal life, I'm going to say when you work in something that you love, those things blend, they come together. "I'm trying to find a worklife balance. But I'm not there

yet, so this is without question the hardest thing I've had to do in my professional life." Ryan explained that while the loss of Chadwick "stings", it has left him "incredibly motivated" that he got to spend time with the “Ma Rainey's Black Bottom” star. He said: "This one hurts and stings, but it's also incredibly motivating.

"I'm incredibly sad to lose him but I'm also incredibly motivated that I got to spend time with him. “You spend your life hearing about people like him. “For this individual, who is an ancestor now, I was there for it. OT too long ago, spotting a Lozi man or woman proudly donning their iconic ivory bangles (Litowu in Lozi) was not uncommon. In fact, you could easily identify a Lozi just by looking at their wrist. In Lozi tradition, the bangles are not just ornamental, they are symbolic and are typically given to children at different points in life such as at birth or at puberty.

However, a chain of arrests of Zambians outside the country for wearing these iconic bangles shone a spotlight on this tradition. In 2014 a Zambian woman was arrested in Ethiopia for being in possession of three hand bracelets made of ivory, while another Zambian female was arrested in 2019 by Kenyan authorities at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi for wearing an ivory bangle. Many others were arrested locally for the same reason. It was around this time that the Zambian Government and the Zambia Wildlife Authority, now Department of National Parks and Wildlife – DNPW, started urging Zambians to get permits for their ivory ornaments. To legally own an ivory bangle, one needs to obtain a certificate of ownership after showing proof of legal acquisition of the bangles or provide a sworn affidavit to indicate that the bangles were acquired before the ban on ivory trade in Zambia and were gifted to them. In addition, a CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) pre- convention certificate is an important requirement that would allow one to carry their ornament without the risk of being arrested for illegal possession of ivory outside Zambia. The illegal use of ivory in Zambia for this and other purposes threatens our population of elephants, who’s numbers have reduced significantly over recent decades. Its estimated that poachers have killed more than 90 percent of Zambia’s elephants since the 1950s. For many Lozis and others who owned or desired to own an ivory bangle, the process and risks involved were more than they could bare, so they gave up the idea of wearing ivory bangles entirely. However, there is a young couple in Lusaka that will not let this ancient Lozi tradition die. Their solution?

THE VILLAGER ZED SHOP Preserving culture and conserving wildlife

They opened a shop in Kamwala last year, The Villager Zed Shop, which sells traditional artifacts including some highquality replica bangles made from alternative, legal materials like plastic, granite and powdered cow horn. Mr. Munyinda Nambula and his wife started selling replica bangles as a way of preserving culture while preserving nature and wildlife. “These bangles are our identity as lozis as they symbolize royalty and authority, so we figured we could preserve this important aspect of our culture by providing an alternative that is closer to the real one.” The bangles are made from high quality materials to make them virtually indistinguishable from those made from real elephant ivory and are legal and sustainable. As a result, the replica and original bangles are remarkably close in weight and

strength. The replicas are certainly not a cheap knockoff. Mr. Nambula explained that cheap plastic bangles would not settle well with many people because they will not feel they are wearing something that is their identity. For Mr. Nambula, selling replica bangles, which he distributes to customers within and outside Lusaka, is about more than just preserving Lozi culture. It is his contribution to protecting Zambia’s magnificent wildlife, as he is particularly big on conserving elephants. “We need to protect our wildlife so that in future when we teach our children about elephants and their significance in our culture, we can actually take them to national parks within our country to see these majestic animals for themselves. He adds, “It would be sad for us to lose all our wildlife to poaching, so that they only re-

main in zoos outside Africa.” As more Zambians agree that now is the time to act against poaching and to rethink cultural practices that threaten wildlife, they are open to the idea of switching to quality alternative products that are environmentally friendly. “Since we opened our shop, I have noticed increased demand for the bangles, and people now prefer the replicas to the original. They want to be able to practice their culture and get back their identity by acquiring bangles that will not put them at loggerheads with the authorities, says 34-year-old Nambula. He adds, “They want something they can wear daily and cross borders with, without worrying about possible arrests. Indeed, it is better to adorn oneself with a quality replica that you can be proud of and that guarantees peace of mind, than to own an original ivory bangle, which came from an illegally killed elephant, that you will be too scared to wear publicly. This ensures that culture is preserved, and that only elephants wear real ivory, because only elephants need ivory. Write to: info@wildlifecrimeprevention.org

IT TAKES A STRONG MAN TO WALK AWAY FROM TOXIC FAMILY MEMBERS What you need to know: Summary: •

Walking away from a toxic family is a thought harboured by many men have but lack the confidence to execute it You have many men who have to go home over the holidays even though they will be miserable You don’t owe people who hurt your allegiance just because they’re family

O

NE of the biggest mysteries of my childhood was my mother’s obsession with Princess Diana. It was a shared generational love across the world for women their age. It took me a while to finally figure out why this woman from the

royal family thousands of miles away had an impact on black women. Her break from protocol and her humanity had her standing out—which was made easier by the fact that they were comparing her to the cardboard-stiff royals. Black women all over the world also felt that they connected with her because of the mistreatment that she underwent in the royal family for going against the grain. I hadn’t seen that in years until Prince Harry married Meghan Markle and the royal wedding made international headlines and black women all over the world were backing Meghan yet again. They rallied behind her because she was being attacked by the media for being mixed race, they stood up for her again when she and Harry decided to leave the royal

family and again this week in the Oprah ‘tell it all interview’. There’s an old African saying that goes, ‘The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth’ and this rings true each time I hear men talk about their childhoods. Truth is more of us men should be brave enough to break blood ties and society should be more accepting instead of accusing us of abandonment. You don’t owe people who hurt your allegiance just because they’re family. Family can hurt and break you worse than anyone else especially if they think you’re never going to leave. Choose yourself now or live a lifetime of regret. Reach the writer on: mwthoithi@gmail.com or the editor on: satmag@ ke.nationmedia.com

SHOULD YOU DATE A BROKE OR RICH MAN? Y

OU are in the dating scene and you are thinking it's the right time to settle down. Somehow, you have to narrow down the profiles. There is this broke guy, who showers you with all the attention, he works hard, but the skies have not yet smiled on him. Then, there is the moneyed bloke, who has been giving you the side-eye, but you have to compete for his time. Which should one is ideal? On one hand, you are afraid that you might be labeled materialistic by shunning broke men and going for the rich. On the other, you are afraid that dating a poor man is a risk that hardly pays off. After all, you have seen broke men desert or cheat on the women who stood by them when they had nothing.

The poor and insecure Jolene Lubanga, who is the head of marketing at a Nairobi-based Tours and Travel company, says that it is very important for a man to be financially stable. "I have previously dated a man who made

less money than I do. Our relationship started strongly. I even thought I'd get married to him, but we soon hit the rocks because of the differences in our earnings," she says. Her man was in a perpetual state of insecurity. He was afraid that Jolene would overpower him. “I cannot count the number of times he uttered the words ‘I am the man in this relationship!” she says. Her man began to demand that he accompany her wherever she traveled. “He couldn’t accept that I would stay faithful to him regardless of our pay gap,” says Jolene who is in her 30s. In the end, she could not take it any longer and decided to quit the relationship. “I truly loved him and would have wanted things to work out between us, but I was also conscious that he would never accept or cope with my gogetter attitude,” she says. The rich and secure One of the fears you may have about dating a poor man regardless of his potential to get rich in the future is the financial insecurity of the re-

lationship. Rebecca Ndirangu who runs a wedding catering business in Nakuru says that she prefers the comfort and assurance of the money at the bank to the feelings in the heart. “I can love a man but I would never marry him if he is poor. Having potential doesn’t mean you’ll get rich. Heri nilie kwenye Range Rover kuliko nicheke juu ya boda boda!” she says. Rebecca says that she would never be the woman who panics because her man has potential but no cash to pay rent. She adds that a man ought to have adequate cash that can also be occasionally shared with his extended family. “If he is unable to send something to his mother or his college-going sister, how will he be able to take care of me or our kids?” she poses. According to Dr. David Ludden, the author of Modern Psychology, women’s preferences tilt in favour of money overlooks because of economic demands. “Mating choices have economic consequences. Women would not go for looks as much as they do if they didn’t have to worry

about the economic repercussions of choosing looks over money,” he says. The beautiful and the rich When it comes to a dating beauty contest, the poor guy will hardly win over the most beautiful woman in the pool. According to Dr. Chris Hart,

the author of Single & Searching, the most beautiful women looking for men with the highest social status, which usually means rich. “The downside to this is that the man, rich or averagely stable may subconsciously spend way beyond his financial ability to show

he can afford it,” says Dr. Hart. This is echoed by a study that was conducted by the University of Göttingen on some 68,000 men and women. The study found that up to 70 percent of men want to date attractive women. - DAILY NATION, Kenya

Please tone down in your expectations! Dear Editor,

Nalumango should learn from Kuku Inonge Wina’s calmness by not calling Zambians abatutu Dear Editor, WE are made to believe that the recently selected UPND Vice President Ms Mutale Nalumango, by an undemocratically elected UPND is still nursing the electoral defeat she suffered from PF which led to her losing the Kaputa Parliamentary seat. With her immensely fair professional and political experience, and having served as MP, Cabinet Minister and later as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, the standard of approach toward national issues expected of her is higher than her boss, Mr Hakainde Hichilema who has never served in Government even as a councillor. Her recent interview at a radio station leaves much to be desired especially that as UPND second in command, she is chief adviser to her boss. This is because of the manner in which she was handling questions that came from callers who would oppose her. It was very unfortunate and disappointing at the same time to hear Ms Nalumango referring to her critics as “abatuutu” and “abafontin”' (very backward people). This crude language is least expected from a seasoned politician and career person of her statue. Ms Nalumango uttered those words with indignation when she featured on one of the local radio stations in Lusaka. We feel Ms Nalumango demeaned the very people from whom she is begging for votes so that when she is in power (God forbid) she will insult

Ms Nalumango

them more! Imagine, someone who is merely in opposition coming out strongly with her vocabulary which contained nothing but bitterness and lack of respect for citizens, what would happen if she was in power? We are sure many would be ruled with an iron fist. By and large, criticism builds individuals and make one to forge ahead and soldier on. No one has ever succeeded without fair criticism and we can safely say the criticism that came from all the callers on the radio programme were sober,

respectful and devoid of insults or disrespect. Additionally, we don't expect HH's bitterness to be transmissible to her now that she is the vice-president who is a mother of the nation, someone you can seek solace and comfort from in time of distress. We now agree to the English adage, "birds of the same feather, flock together." Mr Hichilema and his vice president are both bitter and lack regard for the general citizenry. The good example we can give for free is our calm and soft hearted with a motherly voice, our republican Vice President Ms Inonge Mutukwa Wina. Her voice is as tender as a caring mother and her heart is as soft as that of a dove. We urge Ms Nalumango to emulate the calm and composed nature of bo Inonge Wina even in the sight of immense provocation from her competitors. President Edgar Lungu had no tough time picking her as his Vice President and running mate. Mr Lungu paired himself very well where humbleness and calmness are concerned. These two servants of the people are indeed peace makers and God given leaders no wonder the majority citizens are looking forward to voting them back in office on August 12, 2021. You cannot in anyway be a leader out of revenge, envy and bitterness. No way! MARVIN CHANDA MBERI, Lusaka.

TODAY being the aftermath of the “Youth Day” celebrations, I took time pondering and reflecting on the significance of the day and the importance it carries in our bation. Sadly, my analysis as I listened and watched some media clips and updates indicated to me the wantonness and desperation which has engulfed some politicians! The day meant to commemorate activities associated to the plight of our youths was turned into a political circus. The celebration was hijacked for political expedience and became a recipe in wooing desperate and impoverished youths who make up more than 45 percent of the population. Sadly in some parts of our country, pockets of violence and commotions were recorded. As we draw close to August 12 each and every new day, the imminence of pending elections is becoming a reality. Many political players are so resolved in emerging victorious. Sometimes as a spectator, I am left wondering in amazement where politicians draw impetus and momentums in assuming their popularity! The curiosity and desperation is just too much. Could it be that they are far from the realities or can it be said to be political gimmicks meant to accumulate some material status? Why should a sane and sober minded person fictitiously claim to form Government when he is battling uniting his own household? If one's own children and spouses do not believe in him, would he expect to convince the rest of the citizens? Confusion and pandemonium has rocked many political parties. Although they are promising good to the nation, their own parties lie in pieces. I wish therefore to admonish all political players not to throw our peaceful nation into turmoil. Please tone down in

your political inquisition! Be liberal and sober. Cultivate patience and calmness of heart. Have genuine love at heart of the Country and do not focus on your mundane desire to rule. Please judge and read the writings on the walls. It is apparent and evident before all participants about their chances of ascending to power. Rather than resorting to finger pointing and using lame excuses, face the reality of what is obtaining on the ground. Do not put the lives of the citizens at stake due to your deep rooted anger for power. Concede defeat and accept your limitations and indebtedness even before making any self proclamations! Help us maintain the peace, harmony and tranTO POLITICIANS

Confusion and pandemonium has rocked many political parties. Although they are promising good to the nation, their own parties lie in pieces. I wish therefore to admonish all political players not to throw our peaceful nation into turmoil. quility that we have always enjoyed. Do not promise heavens when even paradise is unattainable to yourselves. Respect the wish of the citizens and do not mislead the voters with deceptions and extravagant spending. KENYATTA BANS POLITICAL RALLIES, EXTENDS CURFEW

Nyusi names UN chief calls for unconditional release new security of abducted students in Nigeria chiefs in shake-up MAPUTO - Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi has appointed Major-General Cristovao Chume as head of the army, in a reshuffle of his security chiefs, amid an Islamist insurgency in the north of the country. The former heads of the army and air force have been demoted. Ex-army chief Maj-Gen Ezequiel Isac Muianga is now the army inspector, a more junior role, and ex-air force chief Maj-Gen Messias André Niposso now heads the Mozambican Civil Service. Brig Candido Jose Tirano has been promoted from inspector to commander of the air force. The important role of chief of the general staff has not been filled - it became vacant after Gen Eugenio Mussa died earlier in February. For the last three years the military has been battling jihadists in the north, unable to prevent their brutal attacks in Cabo Delgado province. – BBC.

NEW YORK - United Nations SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres on Friday strongly condemned the latest mass kidnapping of students in Nigeria and demanded their unconditional release. Late Thursday night, some 30 female and male students as well as several school staff, were reportedly abducted by gunmen from the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, just outside Kaduna city in the Igabi local government area, which marks at least the fourth students kidnap in the country since December. While some students have reportedly been rescued by Nigerian security forces, the UN chief called for “the immediate and unconditional release of those students that remain in captivity,” his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric told journalist at a regular press briefing. “The secretary-General underscores that schools must remain safe spaces for children to learn without fear of violence or kidnapping or any other attacks on them,” Dujarric said, adding that “attacks on schools and other educational facilities constitute a grave violation of children’s rights and human rights more broadly.” The UN chief “urges the authorities to safeguard schools and to ensure the right to education in a safe environment,” Dujarric added. Last week, 279 schoolgirls were freed after being snatched from their boarding school at Jangebe, in northwest Nigeria’s Zamfara state.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Weeks before, dozens of children and staff were taken from a boarding school and in December, more than 300 boys were abducted. Fears are growing that a so-called “kidnapping industry” is continuing to expand across northern Nigeria. In 2014, the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram’s attack on the Chibok secondary school in Borno state sparked international outcry and prompted the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. Of the 276 girls taken then, more than 100 are reportedly still missing nearly seven years later. – XINHUA.

George Floyd’s family receives $27m settlement from Minneapolis over his death DAILY

World 6

WASHINGTON - The city of Minneapolis on Friday agreed to pay $27 million to settle a lawsuit by the family of George Floyd over his death in police custody, a case that stirred national protests over racial injustice and police brutality. Minnesota for getting this Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in May as Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes. Floyd’s dying pleas for help were captured on widely viewed bystander video, sparking one of the largest protest movements ever seen in the United States. Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the Floyd family, said the agreement was the largest pre-trial settlement of a wrongful death lawsuit in U.S. history. The size signifies that a Black person’s death at the hands of police “will no longer be written off as trivial, unimportant or unworthy of consequences,” Crump said at a news conference where he was joined by Floyd’s relatives, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and other officials. Floyd’s family was “pleased that this part of our tragic journey to justice for my brother George is resolved,” his sister Bridgett Floyd said

George Floyd in a statement. “While our hearts are broken, we are comforted in knowing that even in death, George Floyd showed the world how to live,” her statement said. The trial of Chauvin, who was fired by the police force, began last week in Hennepin County’s district court on charges of murder and manslaughter. Chauvin has pleaded not guilty and said he properly followed his police training. Last year, Floyd’s relatives sued the city, Chauvin and three other police officers involved in federal court, saying police used excessive force against Floyd in violation of his constitutional rights. – REUTERS.

Fathi on compassionate leave By SPORTS REPORTER

NAPSA Stars have sent head coach Mohammed Fathi on compassionate leave three days after the team recorded a disappointing 2-0 defeat to RS Berkane in the CAF Confederations Cup. The club’s general secretary Honor Janza, who is doubling as Technical Director confirmed the development in a statement issued by their Public Relations Officer Gwen Chipasula. Janza said Fathi lost his father in February back home in Egypt, and has not had time to be with his family during that difficult period. “Our coach suffered a family bereavement last month and we believe it’s best that he takes some time away from the club to be with his family,” Janza said. Assistant coach Kapamba Chintu will take over in an interim capacity during Fathi’s absence.

Struggling Nkana have coach worried By MICHAEL MIYOBA

NKANA coach Kelvin Kaindu has expressed concern with the depth of his team which has struggled to impress in the last six games which have all ended in defeats. Speaking in an interview after Nkana’s 3-0 bashing by Egyptian giants Pyramids FC in the Caf Confederations Cup Group D fixture in Egypt, Kaindu said pressure was mounting for the Kitwe giants who are in the relegation zone on the Super Division. Kaindu said there is need to motivate the players and regulate a training programme which will ensure that the

players have enough rest while focusing on both the Confederations Cup fixtures and the Super Division. “Looking at the depth of the team we have, we may have to make tough decisions but basically we have the same players playing in the league and the Confederations Cup. “We just have to start winning as soon as possible. What we need to do is to bring the players into shape and motivate them to gain back their confidence which is lacking,” Kaindu said. Kaindu said Nkana are playing well but their only problem is the defence. “There are a few areas where we need to improve on. We are going forward but it is unfortunate we fail to score. We always create chances but the biggest concern is in the way we defend,” Kaindu said. The defending champions are 16th on the Super Division table with 20 points but have played four games less than the league leaders Zesco United who are on 40 points.
