NATIONALISTS WANTED YES, politicians who think they can aspire to high political office in the country riding the tribal tag are fighting a losing battle. They won’t realise their cherished dream of ruling the country come to fruition because their tribal base does not cover the whole country. They ought to realise that for one aspiring to be president, the constituency is the breadth and width of Zambia. This is the more reason why politicians should heed the advice by Paramount Chief Chitimukulu that their primary duty is to work towards improving the lives of the people and not fanning tribal politics. We agree with the Chitimukulu that politics must be about competing ideas on how one hopes to serve the people and not building one’s political base through tribe. The Chitimukulu is right that those who espouse tribalism have something wrong with their faculties that they do not think properly. Zambians have always regarded themselves as one people and it would be folly for anyone to think that they can be divided on tribal lines. This is one each of the political parties that has formed government, from independence, enjoyed countrywide support. Of course there have been regions which have defied this logic, but thankfully, they have been in the minority while the rest of the nation have embraced the party in government. The Chitimukulu said politicians who were propagating tribalism are those who have failed to convince Zambians to vote for them and now had resorted to tribal politics to remain relevant. But they won’t become relevant on the national stage that matters. Zambia has evolved into a united country because people from the various ethnic backgrounds have embraced one another, as the Chitimukulu said. We are glad that Chitimukulu also dismissed the notion that traditional leaders were not united by reminding the nation how in 2002, chiefs from across the country met to show solidarity to one another and that from that time, the traditional leaders have lived as brothers and sisters. “In 2002, I had the courage to say if our subjects are intermarrying why we the chiefs can’t also unite, I know of the people who used to say Tongas hate you but that should not be the case,” he said. He said the chiefs in the country would want the unity that exist among them replicated to their subjects so that the country can continue to enjoy the peace and harmony it has known since independence. With the country heading for Presidential and general elections next year, politicians must be warned that it is ideas, not their tribe, that will win them votes from the electorate. That is why it is important that politicians listen to the wise counsel from the Chitimukulu, that they have to move outgrow their tribal base for them to be relevant and make a difference to the country’s political well-being.

How Bill 10 was sabotaged by politics of atychiphobia

By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE

I

N as much as I agree with sentiments expressed by veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga (VJ) in an article titled, “Bill 10 Was A Political Trap Against UPND And HH By PF, Lungu Has Won The Game – VJ” (widely circulated on social media), I take serious exception to his comments about the PF government having set up a trap on UPND and its life president with reference to the 2021 election campaign, using the failed Bill 10 narrative. But VJ in his convoluted article did not mention anything about UPND’s political discourse beginning with fear of failure to eventually end in failure and I think he needs to be a bit more empathetic to the UPND lawmakers’ captured-calibre. Was he insinuating that PF lawmakers were somewhat politically-savvier or smarter than lawmakers of the party he supports? Was VJ’s article a spin meant to misinform the voting public? Like many other sceptics, I remained wondering. So, what is UPND’s fear of failure? Also known as atychiphobia, fear of failure is a phobia characterised by the inability to attempt any goal that is not a guaranteed success. While the failed Bill 10 comfort zone might feel safe and secure, UPND’s fear of failing in 2021 polls can be paralysing without blocking formidable opponents threatening its success. Prominent among these feared opponents has been the incumbent, President Edgar Lungu whose first attempt at Zambia’s presidency trounced the then UPND’s third-time losing presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema in the historic by-election of January 20, 2015. His victory sent UPND-aligned NGOs and Western diplomats in Lusaka scurrying for cover, for none had given him a dog’s chance to win, let alone the ability to complete the late President Michael Sata’s remaining tenure of office. After his successive second victory in 2016, is it why his opponent, HH, has chosen the legal route to block his next year’s bid to contest via the Constitutional Court? All those concerned about President Lungu’s eligibility to stand for elections in 2021

UPND celebrating of the fall of Bill 10 must look at all the UPND’s political dynamics of atychiphobia. Fostering this phobia can become so debilitating that it can hold the UPND back and hinder Zambia’s constitutional refinement. If UPND does nothing and resist moving forward for fear of failure, it could fail to progress in politics. This means it might miss out on amazing opportunities and experiences in politics. It is a fear of disappointing party followers and even the rejection or lack of approval of voters. It can encourage aspiring candidates to avoid taking risks, setting goals, or participating in electoral activities. To grow, UPND needs to do things it hasn’t done before and failure is often needed as a feedback loop to learn from mistakes and become politically competent. Besides, all political careers are supposed to end in failure. Many don’t take very long to achieve this: in every Zambian election, many more people run for parliament or State House than could win, producing, inevitably, more losers than winners. Most UPND aspiring parliamentary and presidential candidates since 2006 have failed to win a single election. Given this, you might expect that anyone embarking on a political project, of any constitutional stripe, would think of it as a daunting, complex challenge. Yet politics seems to be full of leaders who think it’s pretty straightforward. Unlike PF,

UPND’s electoral victories are planned out – bish-bashbosh – between rounds of drinks at get-togethers at HH’s house in New Kasama or at Oppenheimer family’s luxurious Tswalu game reserve in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Even those with years of experience observing politics up close, like HH today or VJ before him in 2011 then-MMD parliamentary Chief Whip, rarely seem burdened by a fear of political failure. The UPND then, decided not to vote for the MMD-crafted constitutional bill after voting in favour of the same bill during the first round of voting. Besides atychiphobia, one explanation might be that both HH and VJ tend to think of themselves as possessing above average skills in conducting simple tasks or possessing positive traits. If they overestimate the number of people who agree with them – a standard psychological finding called the “false consensus” effect – then perhaps doing politics seems simpler and more pleasant than it really is. But this shouldn’t last forever: there should be a highly reliable antidote to the false consensus effect, called “losing an election.” Yet, more often than not, this confidence persists even after a crushing electoral defeat. If overconfidence explains why so many UPND-aligned NGOs throw themselves, so regularly, into losing causes, it doesn’t explain why they offer their strategic advice

so readily to their political party, even when said advice isn’t based on an awful lot of evidence, experience or even reflection. This is where what psychologists call: “illusions of explanatory depth” come into play. If GEARS self-touted electoral expert McDonald Chipenzi, and other UPND-aligned activists were asked if they knew why President Lungu should not be allowed to contest in next year’s elections, they’ll probably say that they do. But when asked to actually explain why, despite the Constitutional Court’s ruling that he qualified to stand, and their confidence will drain away. Similarly, I suspect that if HH was asked how he could win the next election, it’s easy to offer a rather shallow answer like “Zambia’s much-needed economic resuscitation” or “fight against government’s corruption”. If asked how he could win, the task is actually smaller but those answers look corny. By contrast, if he’s encouraged to think abstractly, by making him think about why he does things but potentially by asking him why he is involved in politics – he will tend to have an even more overinflated sense that he has all the answers. This path, from greater abstraction, to greater confidence, and then to seemingly-unexpected depths of electoral defeat, was the path HH took in the 2006, 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016 elections. Despite the failed Bill 10, electoral defeat is beckoning him again.

I’LL FIX HH - TAYALI From Page 1 And FDD president Edith Nawakwi said it was Mr Hichilema who is a stooge of foreign interests and therefore should not drag her name into his troubled life. Economic Equity Party leader, Chilufya Tayali said he was ready to table all the evidence against Mr Hichilema in court to prove that he committed crimes during privatisation of state-owned companies. Mr Tayali was reacting to the UPND president’s threats that he would deal with Mr Tayali and Ms Nawakwi for being used by the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) to accuse him of corruption during privatisation. Featuring on Radio Phoenix, ‘Let the people talk’ programme on Friday, Mr Hichilema said he was tired of being accused of corruption, adding that he was also aware that the PF Government was using its surrogates like Mr Tayali and Ms Nawakwi to incite some families where he bought farms to claim that he got those two properties through dubious means. But Mr Tayali said it was he who would instead fix Mr Hichilema by ensuring that he was sent to jail for having committed crimes. Asked if he was sponsored by the PF to accuse Mr Hichilema of corruption during privatisation, Mr Tayali said, “Far from it. I am not sponsored by PF. In fact, if there are people using me, those are the people that are crying for what HH did for

them and not ba PF. Those people he deprived of jobs, houses and land.” Meanwhile Ms Nawakwi said, "We all know that Mr Hichilema is the stooge for Anglo-America. I'm surprised that young man can today start calling me names.” She said Mr Hichilema has a troubled mind and the best thing he needed to do was to return the properties that he plundered from the people of Zambia during privatisation. "That young man has a troubled mind, my advice to him is that he should return the stolen property and make peace with the Zambian people before he can start thinking of aspiring to the higher office," she said. Ms Nawakwi said the UPND leader should stop carrying himself as a rich man because some of the properties he claims to own were allegedly not his but belonged to deceased persons. She said Mr Hichilema will never know peace until the day he is going to return the properties which he allegedly stole from the Zambian people.

DON’T FAN TRIBALISM, CHITIMUKULU SCHOOLS POLITICIANS By OLIVER SAMBOKO

P

OLITICS should be about exchanging ideas on how to better the lives of the people and not a platform to fan tribalism in the country, Paramount Chief Chitimukulu has advised politicians. He said the tribalism in the country was as a result of some people not thinking properly. The Chitimukulu said politicians who were propagating tribalism are those who have failed to convince Zambian to vote for them and now had resorted to tribal politics to remain relevant. He said the chiefs in the

country would want the unity that exist among them replicated to their subjects so that the country can continue to enjoy the peace and harmony it has known since independence. Mwinelubemba also observed that there was no reason for chiefs not to unite and live in harmony considering that their subjects were intermarrying and living in peace. He also said there was need to use intermarriages as a catalyst to unite the country under the one Zambia, one nation arrangement. "It's not strange to find a Mumba Phiri, Hamumba Mulenga, a sign that Zambians are

united as one people, and this should continue so that the people of Zambia can continue living as one " he said. Chitimukulu said because there were some politician who wanted to cause divisions among the citizens for political reasons, the country was somehow divided but reiterated that there was still room to end tribal talk. “In 2002, I had the courage to say if our subjects are intermarrying why can't we the chiefs also unite, I know of the people who used to say Tongas hate you but that should not be the case” he said. Chitimukulu recalled that in the same year chiefs from

across the country met to show solidarity to one another and that from that time, the traditional leaders have lived as brothers and sisters.

State will continue working with church, says Lungu By OLIVER SAMBOKO

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says his government will continue working closely with the church to end poverty and improve the living standards of the people. Mr Lungu said this in a speech read by PF national mobilisation committee treasurer Bizwell Mutale at the 19th Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Biannual Synod meeting in Lundazi. He said the church remains a key partner in ending pov-

erty among the country's citizens, the reason why the party in Government was going to continue supporting it in its evangelical and other poverty alleviating programmes. President Lungu said the church has not only provided spiritual guidance but also supplemented Government efforts in the provision of education and health care to the less privileged in society. He commended the CCAP for providing safe drinking water through the department of shallow wells which has drilled

over 5, 000 boreholes countrywide. Mr Lungu appreciated church for coming up with various programmes including the empowerment of women groups through the village savings loans. The President said Government was happy that through this help, women have managed to become self-reliant, and able to educate their children and provide for their families. He also appealed to the church to preach unity and love to end all forms of tribal

Bondholders’ rejection will not trigger payments from govt, says Ng’andu From Page 1 The requirement is that we treat all of them equally," the minister said. Dr Ng’andu was reacting to remarks by economic experts that government should consider immediately paying the US$42.5 million coupon payment which fell due last month so that Zambia can have a leverage to negotiate with the bondholders as it still has up to next week to make the payment. Zambia, under the Cure Period still has up to Wednesday next week to meet its obligation. A Cure Period is a time frame of 30 to 90 days during which a company that has gone into technical default on a contractual payment is permitted to submit payment without further prejudice, and without being considered to have defaulted. There could be a possibility of paying and negotiating once Government uses part of the foreign reserves to service the coupon payment, says Professor Oliver Saasa, an economist. Prof Saasa said Governwmnt could be able to buy time for more negotiations with the bondhold-

3

DR NG’ANDU ers if the US$42.5 million coupon payment for last month was paid. Under normal circumstances, he said, it would not be recommended to use foreign reserves but stressed that laying bondholders was an emergency. "Government must get some of the US$1. 4 billion reserves and pay the coupon payment because when you default, there will be an

immediate demand of what you are owing. "This includes the bullet payment instantly. They will demand US$1 billion over and above the US$42.5 million," Prof Saasa said in an interview. Bondholders last Friday rejected Zambia's request to defer interest payments due on each of the bonds during the period from October 14, 2020 until April 14, 2021. This means that the modifications and waivers, including the deferral of interest payments due on each of the bonds during the period from October 14, 2020 until April 2021 14, requested by Zambia will not be implemented. Zambia missed payment of US$42.5 million coupon on one of its dollar denominated sovereign bonds last month. Commenting on this development, Prof Saasa pleaded with Government to immediately pay the coupon payment as the cost of defaulting was devastating. Prof Saasa warned that Zambia would further be downgrade by rating agencies and that the default would complicate negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"My posititon is that it is better to negotiate with the Chinese and have a default with them where you have a government there that can negotiate and even forgive than to default with these Eurobond holders who immediately you default there is no negotiation because it is commercial loans. "These are private companies on the Capital markets. There is no government to negotiate with. These guys you must pay them. My plea is that let us pay. Arrogance will not take us anywhere. The economy will be very bad like other countries," he said. Zambia has US$3 billion of Eurobonds outstanding and owes US$2 billion to commercial banks, US$2 billion to the IMF and World Bank and another US$3 billion to China. And Economist Noel Nkhoma said Government had up to next week “when an interest coupon matures, and you are unable to honour your obligation, you have what they call a 30-day “Cure Period.” He said Government’s only option was to pay the coupon interests of US$42.5 million from the foreign reserves.

segregation especially during elections. He noted the need to abide by the 'One Zambia One Nation' motto which aims at uniting all Zambians despite their tribal lineage. Outgoing CCAP Synod Moderator Chizason Chunda said the church was ready to work with the government of the day to develop the country. Reverend Chunda said the church has embarked on many projects which are contributing positively to the development of the country.

‘ZCCM-IH to offer competitive gold price’ By SILUMESI MALUMO

ZCCM-IH will provide a competitive price to stop foreigners from illegally buying gold from miners, Minister of Mines and Mineral Development Richard Musukwa has said. Mr Musukwa has meanwhile urged mining houses in the country to increase production and stop giving excuses regarding the Covid-19 pandemic. The minister admitted that there were a lot of foreigners who were illegally buying gold from small-scale miners. To stop the illegality, he said, ZCCM-IH should ensure that a good price was offered to miners. He said this when Zambia Chamber of Mines Chief Executive Officer Sokwani Chilembo called on him yesterday. Mr Musukwa was concerned with high level of illegality in the gold sub sector which needed to be addressed immediately. He said that gold had been identified as a resource that would change the outlook of the country’s economy and illegalities must stopped by all cost. Mr Musukwa said Government was aware of illegalities at Kasenseli gold site in Mwinilunga and was working towards stopping the illegal trend. He said that a number of illegal miners had invaded the gold area which would not be tolerated. Meanwhile Mr Musukwa said government would remain consistent on its policies to attract investment in the mining sector. Earlier, Mr Chilembo maintained the need for Government to reduce mineral royalty tax.

We are encouraging everyone rather than just complaining about the loopholes identified to be part of those that have endured the difficulties and register," he said. He also challenged politicians to encourage their members to register so as to take part in the democratic dispensation by choosing their leaders. Mr. Chileshe has on the other hand commended the ECZ for putting up an effective sensitisation campaign to make sure that the general public is aware about the ongoing exercise. He called for a spread of campaigns not only on television and radio but urged ECZ to use institutions such as ZANIS so that no one remains behind with information. The mobile voter registration exercise commenced on November 9, 2020 and will end on December 12, 2020, while EZC is targeting to register nine million voters. – ZANIS.

Guard against Covid-19 second wave, Zambians warned By SILUMESI MALUMO

CHINA has urged Zambians to take preventive measures such as sanitising and masking up seriously to preserve lives because the second wave of Covid-19 is looming. Zambia-China Friendship Association acting secretary-general Chibeza Mfuni said it was important that residents the warning by the health authorities and scientists of the second wave during the rainy season which would put many lives at risk. Mr Mfuni said the public should not relax in adhering to the health measures so that lives can be saved. He said this on Friday when he donated 12, 000 face masks from the people of China to six schools in Kanyama area in Lusaka. Among the schools which received

2, 000 masks each were Chibolya Primary School, Kanyama Central Primary School, John Laing Primary School, New Kanyama Primary School, Twashuka Basic School and Chinika Secondary School. Mr Mfuni said the onus was on every Zambian to ensure that lives were protected in the second wave which was looming. “We have heard the health authorities and the scientists warning about the second wave of Covid-19, so by masking up, we will help to save lives. So we are appealing to all the schools that have received the face masks to ensure that all pupils mask up each and every time. We need to take this pandemic seriously and the warning from the health authorities. “Anybody is at risk and we need to be very careful at all cost,” Mr Mfuni said.

Lungu’s work guarantees 2021 victory, says Moonga By OLIVER SAMBOKO

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu is assured of a resounding victory in next year’s election because of the many developmental projects the Patriotic Front government is carrying out, says a senior party official. Lusaka Province chairman Paul Moonga said it was no secret that the government under President Edgar Lungu has continued to take development to all parts of the country leaving no one behind. Mr Moonga assured the President that the party in province would ensure that the targeted 1.8 million voters for Lusaka Province is met. “We wish to reiterate the President’s and party secretary-general’s call to duty to all our members, especially the leadership to go and register as voters or risk being

removed and subsequently expelled from the party if they do not register as voters in the 2021 presidential and parliamentary elections,” he said. Mr Monnga directed the leadership in all districts to ensure that all members register as voters in readiness for the 2021 general election. Mr Moonga also called for

Dr Kabalo said the ministry os working with the ministries of Local Government, Housing and Infrastructure and Water Development. Dr Kabalo said the Ministry of Health has enough medical supplies in case of an outbreak. He said the Ministry of Infrastructure has been working towards improving drainages to avoid flooding which has been one of the major causes of

cholera. Dr Kabalo said it was important for every citizen to observe high level of hygiene to avoid an outbreak of the diarrhoeal disease this rainy season. He said President Edgar Lungu has demonstrated his resolve to fight cholera and that should be emulated by all Zambians. "President Lungu has demonstrated commitment to fight cholera by going to Kanyama which is one of the notorious areas when it comes to floods,” he said. Dr Kabalo said the fight against cholera should not be left to a single institution or ministry, instead it requires a multi-sectoral approach.

Jere drills borehole for Matero Market By SIMON MUNTEMBA

LUSAKA Lawyer, Dickson Jere yesterday drilled a borehole at Katambalala market of Matero constituency following a request by over 800 traders who have been trading at the market without any water for many years. Mr Jere, through his Matero Initiative Project, successfully drilled the borehole at the market which is also known as Railway Side Market in partnership with his international friends. He said the water from the borehole will be given to marketeers and nearby community for free. “I was approached by the market executive who asked if I can’t help them with water points. I engaged friends who readily agreed to partner with us and provide clean water,” Jere said when the Rig arrived at the market for the drilling in the densely populated George Compound. Mr Jere said he has so far mobilised five more boreholes which will be drilled in needy areas around Matero Constituency and thanked the market executive committee for their cooperation.

Mr Jere

His support comes a few weeks after President Edgar Lungu visited Matero Constituency and expressed concern that the area has had no running water for over five years. And market executive committee member Chanda expressed happiness with the support by the Dickson Jere Foundation, saying the project will help marketeers who have been buying water at a high price is the area.

Zambia revived chances for AfCON qualifier Dear Editor,

Z

AMBIA last Thursday came from behind to beat the Zebras of Botswana 2-1 in the back to back 2021 Cameroon Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) qualifier. The match was played at National Heroes Stadium in a waterlogged condition owing to a heavy downpour. The match was a mustwin for Zambia to revive their chances of qualifying for 2021 AfCON football tournament. Zambiaa is in Group H with Algeria, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. However, Zambia suffered a setback when Botswana scored first through Kobamelo Kebaikanye just before half time. Enock Mwepu who plies his trade at Red Bull Salzburg in Austria restored parity for Zambia in the first stanza of the game. The first half ended 1-1. The match was tough as both teams looked determined. It took the foreign-based prolific striker Fashion Sakala who came in as a substitute for Justin Shonga. Fashion was so “fashionable” that he creat-

ed the winning goal by making a brilliant pass to Collins Sikombe and the latter hit the back of the net, making it 2-1 for Zambia. Zambia was wasteful at goal despite creating a myriad of scoring opportunities. The other result for Group H saw Algeria, the Africa Cup defending champions beating Zimbabwe 3-1 at the former’s home ground. Algeria is still commanding leadership in Group H with 9 points, Zimbabwe is in second position

with 4 points, Zambia is in third position with 3 points and Botswana is now bottom-placed with one point. Going by the current complexion of the table in Group H, Zambia have revived their chances of qualifying for the 2021 AfCON football tournament. The Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic coached side should not be complacent in the remaining matches but should work extremely hard to record positive results. The Chipolopolo Boys

coach has the mammoth task of correcting the mistakes spotted in the match against Botswana. Zambia should beat Botswana at the latter’s backyard in a return match slated for tomorrow. The victory for Zambia has elated the soccer fans and President Edgar Lungu. I congratulate Zambia for beating Botswana and ultimately reviving their chances of qualifying for 2021 AfCON football tournament. ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

THE first phase of the voter registration process has now been rolled out to all areas with a few challenges. The response from the people is encouraging as it shows how informed Zambians are on their rights and responsibilities to take part in public affairs. There are reports that some people using the name of the party have illegally and forcibly taken over the voter registration centres. We have been with a number of party officials and they have expressed ignorance authorising any members to take over the registration centres. Clearly, this development shows that individuals masquerading as party members are not legitimate at all but just in the habit of using the name of the party to get away with criminal acts. While their motive is unknown, we wish to remind followers of public affairs that PF under President Edgar Lungu has promoted institutional independence of the institutions of governance and the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is not an exception. While it is in the interest of political players to safeguard their interests, such interests should not undermine the institutional independence and values of the ECZ. If need be, there are procedures of accrediting or seconding of the stakeholders if they wish to take part in the process. We are not aware whether there is any directive from the chain of command to authorise political actors to assume the role of the ECZ. President Lungu continues to show his commitment to promote free and fair elections. Therefore such irrational behaviour by some criminally-minded individuals using the name of the party is utmost falsehood and disproportionate to the efforts made by the President. We therefore urge the public to be alert for such individuals and they can effect a citizen’s arrest on them and handover then to police. Crime knows no political affiliations. The efforts of stakeholders should not substitute the efforts of legitimate Constitu-

Having a best friend Dear Editor, TWO friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand; “Today my best friend slapped me in the face.” They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the

tional institutions. We urge the police to be firm and restore law and order in the polling centres as their inactivity is aiding the negative public perception on the independence of ECZ. Therefore, the fragrant disrespect of public institutions cannot be claimed to be part of mobilisation initiatives but an act of lawlessness which has no place in a peace loving Zambia. Moreover, the process is a nonpartisan process which should not have any place. We have been guided by Deputy PF Secretary General Mumbi Phiri that if indeed they are PF cadres they should cease holding out themselves and hijacking the role of ECZ. If indeed they are members, we see no reason how they would disobey lawful orders from the deputy secretary general. We also wish to reassure Zambians that ECZ will be given the necessary space to operate freely without the unwarranted harassment from any cross section of society. While we are disturbed by the reports from Lusaka, we urge other stakeholders such as UPND to also do their part to take their overzealous supporters within their alleged strongholds. In the past, during the issuance of NRCs, we heard of the invasion of the centres and in some instances Government employees were harassed. Depoliticising this is therefore a responsibility of all stakeholders. The cadres will therefore do President Lungu justice by detaching themselves from this as he has done enough home work to win a free and fair elections. mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone; “Today my best friend saved my life. The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him; “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?” The other friend replied; “When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it.” MORAL OF THE STORY: Don’t value the things you have in your life. But value who you have in your life. ALEXANDER CHITEME.

Defiled girl defends ‘loving’ boyfriend By MULENGA MUSONDA

A

14-YEAR-OLD described her boyfriend accused of having defiled her as a loving and caring person who showered her with gifts. This is in a case in which Edwell Muchimba, 22, is appearing in the Choma Fast Track Court for Gender-Based Violence charged

with defilement contrary to the Laws of Zambia. Allegations are that Muchimba on July 10 in Choma unlawfully had carnal knowledge of a girl below the age of 16. When the matter came up for trial before Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri, the girl testified that her boyfriend took her to his relative’s place where they had sex on two occasions after promising her marriage.

She said they were in a relationship and she did not disclose her age to Muchimba who constantly showered her with gifts. In cross examination by a lawyer from the Legal Aid Board, Ernest Chilufya, the victim said she did not know her real age though she insisted that she was told that she was 14 years old. Further cross examination by another lawyer Melissa Mulubwa, the girl said she

couldn't remember the year, month or date when she was told that she was 14 years old. She denied assertions from the defence that her parents wanted to marry her off to an older man because Muchimba doesn't have money. The matter was adjourned to December 14 for continued trial after Public Prosecutor Catherine Sakala applied for an adjournment.

Girl (9) identifies defiler on CCTV By MULENGA MUSONDA A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl while looking on the screen (CCTV witness room) quickly identified the man who allegedly defiled her and ordered that she tells her mother that the blood on her private parts resulted from a stick that pricked her. In this matter, 33-year-old Foster Vwavwa of Chufwipa Village in Choma is charged with defilement of a child contrary to the Laws of Zam-

bia. Allegations are that Vwavwa on September 21, in Choma had unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl below the age of 16. When the matter came up for continued trial in the Choma Fast Track Court for Gender-Based Violence following the girl's silence earlier to state what transpired after he undressed her, the victim testified that Vwawa violated her leaving her bleeding. "After I started bleeding,

he told me to say it was a stick that had injured me," she testified. But when Vwavwa was asked to cross examine the victim, he told Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri that he could not ask her questions because she was on television. The matter was adjourned to November 19 for continued trial after Public Prosecutor Catherine Sakala applied for an adjournment. Vwavwa was remanded in custody.

Judgement waits for stock feed theft accused By MULENGA MUSONDA THE Choma Magistrates Court has set a date for judgement involving a female depot assistant for Tiger Animal Feeds accused of stealing over 785 × 50kg bags of stock feed valued at more than K250, 000. Donoria Chamango, 28, a resident of Choma's Shampande Townahip is charged with theft by servant contrary to the Laws of Zambia. Allegations are that Chamanago stole 786 ×50kg bags of stock feed valued at K254, 287 the property of her employer Tiger Animal Feed

Limited. The thefts are said to have occurred between August 26 and September 25, 2020 in Choma where she is stationed. When the matter came up for defence before Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri, Chamanago denied stealing the bags of stock feed. Instead she stated that she sold some on credit while others were damaged. But in cross examination by state prosecutor Coillard Sikwalulwa, Chamanago admitted that the shortage happened in the mentioned month and that some clients

are currently paying. The matter was adjourned to November 27 for judgement. Chamango's bail was extended.

TRIAL When the matter came up for continued trial in the Choma Fast Track Court for Gender-Based Violence following the girl’s silence earlier to state what transpired after he undressed her, the victim testified that Vwawa violated her leaving her bleeding.

‘I was offered a job I never applied for’ By MULENGA MUSONDA DESPITE not having a “full form V” certificate which was the minimum qualification for the job, she was offered employment in the civil service, a 42-year-old Laboratory Assistant told the Choma Magistrates Court. The witness, Ms Katasha Lombe was giving evidence in a case in which Daggoh Chitendwe, aged 58, Chief Human Resources Management Officer, is charged with one count of abuse of authority of office contrary to Section 21(1)(a) of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 3 of 2012. Allegations are that Chitendwe on dates unknown but between June 1, 2016 and September 30, 2016, in Choma, being a public officer abused the authority of his office in the manner in which he facilitated the appointment of Ms Lombe as a Laboratory Assistant at Mukuni Secondary School in Kazungula. Ms Lombe, a Labora-

tory Assistant at Mukuni Combined School in Kazungula, testified before Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri that she applied for the position of a general worker in 2015 and in September 2016, she received a letter of appointment for her current position by Chitendwe who was the Human Resource Officer at Provincial Administration. Despite the vacancy being advertised, Ms Lombe said she did not respond to the advertisement but was miraculously called to collect her letter of appointment. Samson Sakala, the District Education Board Secretary for Kazungula at the time also testified that he went ahead and wrote an introductory letter to the School for Ms Lombe knowing full well that another candidate (Elijah Mwange) who had met all the requirements for the job had presented his letter to him from the Public Service Management Commission before she showed up. Trial continues.

Bushiris flee South Africa From Page 1 Their travel documents were handed to the investigating officer. They are also barred from applying for any travel documents while this case is still pending in court. In a statement on Facebook, Bushiri confirmed that he and his wife were “temporarily in (their) home country, Malawi, because of safety and security issues since 2015, matters that got worse when we just got out on bail.” Bushiri adds: “There have been clear and evident attempts to have myself, my wife and my family killed and despite our several attempts to report to authorities, there has never

been State protection. Our coming to Malawi, hence, is a tactical withdrawal from the Republic of South Africa solely meant to preserve our lives.” Bushiri also lambasted the prosecution, saying the trial has dragged on for almost two years because the “State is not ready to give it”, and that investigators in the case were biased. “Against this background, we have come to a painful conclusion that what my wife and I have faced in the Republic of South Africa, since 2015, is purely persecution not prosecution,” the statement says. Before he would agree to return to South Africa, Bushiri has demanded

the government ensure the family’s safety, and an assurance that the bail for him and his wife would not be revoked. The bail conditions stipulate that the accused are to report to their nearest police station every Monday and Friday – between 06:00 and 18:00 – until the case is finalised. The Bushiris were to hand over the original title deed of a property, jointly owned by them, as a guarantee that they would attend the rest of the criminal proceedings. Bushiri has also demanded new investigating officers and prosecution in the case, claiming he wouldn’t receive a fair trial with their involvement. – NEWS24.

Young Queens reap tears By MICHAEL MIYOBA ZAMBIA under-17 national women’s team players wept yesterday after losing the COSAFA Cup to Tanzania who won the final 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in South Africa. Comfort Selemani had given the Young Queens a crucial lead in the 19th minute as Zambia chased a maiden Cosafa Cup. The Kaluba Kang-

wa-drilled Young Queens were left heartbroken when the referee disallowed a genuine goal which would have given them a 2-0 lead before awarding Tanzania a penalty. Kuku Kipanga stepped up and levelled the scores in the last minute of the five-minutes of stoppage time as penalties followed after the final whistle. Kangwa’s girls were unfortunate as they missed two spot kicks to lose the final 4-3. The loss annoyed Kangwa

who described the officiating of the game by referee Beauty Methikga from Botswana as pathetic. “This is my second year coming to the COSAFA and I still talk about the refereeing. Refereeing has been very pathetic. “They really need to be improving each and every year just looking at the situation, the second goal we scored that was a pure goal but it was disallowed. However, these are some of the issues we need to work around

so that at the end of the day it becomes fair,” Kangwa said after the match. Despite having missed out on the main trophy the Young Queens dominated individual awards with Zambia winning the Fair Play Award of the Tournament while the Player of the Tournament Award went to Tisilile Lungu. Goal keeper Chitete Munsaka was awarded the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award for the few goals she conceded at the tournament.

Not-so ‘Classic Doll’ loses in Tanzania

ZAMBIA National Soccer team coach Miluttin “Micho” Sredojevic has named his provisional 26 member squad to face Botswana in the much anticipated back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers against Botswana slated for November 12th and 16th respectively. The squad which comprises mostly players who featured during the preparatory fixtures against Malawi, South Africa and Ethiopia will be

led by Red Bull Salzburg star man Enock Mwepu who is from enjoying UEFA champions league football with the Austrian giants. Mwepu’s team mate at Salzburg Patson Daka has been left out as he is still nursing a hamstring injury he picked when Red Bull Salzburg played Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid in one of the Champions league fixtures. Meanwhile, the Tanzanian duo of Cletus Chama and Obrey Chirwa who were dropped during last month’s friendlies for allegedly missing two flights have also been left out while the former Orlando Pirates duo of Justin Shonga and Augustin Mulenga have made it back into the Chipolopolo squad. ZANACO, Z ZESCO seek redemption

Classic Dole” Mbewe has apologised to her fans after losing a non-title fight to Tanzanian boxer Zulfa “Macho” Yusufu. The fight which took place on Friday night at the Next Door Arena in Masaki, Dar es Salaam saw Mbewe losing on points after a six-round bout. The Exodus Boxing Promotions boxer who won her WIBA Flyweight Intercontinental championship after beating Zimbabwean boxer Kudakwashe Nyagura via a unanimous point decision last year accepted defeat in Tanzania but promised to come back stronger. “I’m sincerely apologising to my nation and all those who believed in me. I had promised to bring glory to mother Zambia by going back home victorious but failed to fulfil my promise. “I have lost the fight on points I really did my best but it wasn’t my night to control. Thanks to all my well-wishers and thanks for your support,” The fight, organised by the Jackson Group (Sports), was Mbewe’s first fight in 2020 after contact sports was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said there is need for the team to improve on scoring goals after missing a lot of chances in the 2-1 win against Botswana on Thursday in Lusaka. Makembo said it is possible to beat Botswana home and away if the players can show some levels of commitment and hard work to deliver a win. He said millions of Zambians, including President Edgar Lungu will be praying for the team to deliver another win with the government having promised each player US$10, 000 if they beat Botswana home and away. “Beating Botswana on Thursday motivated the players to believe in themselves. Makembo hailed the government for chattering a plane for the Chipolopolo for their African Cup of Nations return qualifier in Botswana. The Chipolopolo arrived in Botswana yesterday for tomorrow’s return leg at Francis Town Sports Complex. Makembo said it would have been unfair to let the players travel by road after Botswanna halted flights into the country due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After their win over Botswana on Thursday, the Chipolopolo moved to third in Group-H with three points, one point behind second-placed Zimbabwe who will be facing Algeria tomorrow.

DRAMA AT LODGE: SHOCKING DISCOVERY CAUSES HUSBAND TO ‘FREEZE’

T

HESE days you seldom find a man who has been cheated on or finds his wife in bed with another man not to forget the basic rules of humanity by brutally assaulting or killing the pair as punishment for fooling around behind his back. But perhaps the most remarkable story is of a betrayed man Peter Nyamidzi from Beitbridge who calmly reacted after he pounced on his wife Edith Muriva having sex with her lover Killian Banhire at a lodge in the border town. It is reported that Nyamidzi who had been tipped off about his wife’s rendezvous, arrived at the lodge (name supplied) and did not need to ask for directions to the “love nest” after loud screams of pleas-

ure and squeaking springs of a bed coming from one of the rooms initially convinced him that it was where the two were having their lunchtime sex romp. When he gently opened the door, he reportedly found the randy pair deeply engrossed in the throes of passion. Showing no emotions, he then calmly asked them what they were doing. He, however, became numb a while later. Seeing that her husband was now emotionless, Muriva and her lover who were partially dressed, quickly bolted out of the room without facing any consequences. They, however, attracted the attention of some residents from

nearby houses who quickly gathered to catch a glimpse of what was happening. The incident which is still talk of Mashakada suburb happened on Thursday last week. After the fiasco, a panic stricken Muriva and apparently out of shame, didn’t go home and her whereabouts are still unknown. A source privy to the super story, and who requested anonymity told B-Metro that before being busted by her husband, Muriva had been seeing Banhire, a driver with a Harare-based bus company for a while. Banhire is also popularly known as Bere in the border town because of his alleged ravenous appetite for women.

They were also reportedly conducting their “amorous congresses” at the lodge in question before an alert resident decided to keep a closer look on their movements and later tipped Nyamidzi. “On this fateful day, the wife and her lover met at their usual location to have an afternoon sex session. Their clandestine love encounters had been going on for a while before they were discovered by a local resident who then tipped Nyamidzi who went to the lodge and busted them. “The two supposedly chose the lodge in question because it is close to Muriva’s sister’s place where she would leave her house claiming she will be visiting her (sister),” the source said.

The seemingly inconsolable husband confirmed the incident to BMetro. “I was really shocked and I don’t even know what to do. Just imagine I married this woman soon after she finished school and I also finished paying the lobola. “We have three children together and for the past 15 years we had been married I wasn’t aware such a thing was happening behind my back. I don’t even know where she is now staying and her relatives are also in the dark about her whereabouts,” said Nyamidzi. Meanwhile, both Muriva and Banhire could not be reached for comment as their mobile numbers were not reachable. - BMETRO

Man (54) rapes niece (7) on Sangoma’s instruction Dad labelled ‘gross’ for A 54-YEAR-OLD man who was reportedly troubled by getting poo tattoos with the mysterious deaths of his cattle has been arrested his kids’ names on his leg for allegedly raping his sev-

en-year -old niece on the advice of a sangoma to supposedly end the problem. The man from Dandanda area in Lupane, Matabeleland North province, sought help from a sangoma after his four cows strangely died within a week. The incident, a source close to investigations said, raised eyebrows within the family prompting the elderly man to enlist the services of a sangoma. The source said the sangoma told him that he had to sleep with a minor between the ages of five and 10 years so that the spell would end forthwith. Believing what he was told by the healer he did not think twice.

“Seeing that his wife had gone to fetch firewood and the minor girl was left alone, he lured her into his bedroom hut and gave her some sweets. After that he asked her to sleep with him on the bed. The unsuspecting minor girl didn’t refuse. He played with her till she fell asleep,” said the source. He exploited the opportunity and allegedly raped her once, said the source.

After the act the elderly man warned the minor girl not to tell anyone about the incident. However, his luck ran out when the minor girl experienced difficulties in walking. “The minor tried to keep the matter to herself but pain in her private parts forced her to reveal the ordeal to her mother,” said the source.

The mother reported the matter to the police leading to the alleged rapist’s arrest. The man appeared before Lupane resident magistrate Ndumo Masuku facing a rape charge. He was remanded in custody for routine remand. The magistrate also advised him to apply for bail at the High Court in Bulawayo. - BMETRO

Man loses wife to sangoma IT was apparently a bad move for a Mberengwa man to accommodate a sangoma he had consulted to cleanse his wife from goblins that she claimed were sexually harassing her during the night. This was after the man, Edgar Rwodzi, of Mawire Village, under Chief Bankwe reportedly lost his wife Tendai Matamba to the self-proclaimed sangoma Andrew Man’ombe. Rwodzi decided to enlist the services of Man’ombe after his wife complained that when in bed she was always being poked by an evil creature with the shape of a man. So nasty was the alleged abuse that she also claimed she was waking up wet and tired every day. After being hired a lustful

Man’ombe who also seemed to have developed an affection towards Rwodzi’s wife requested that he should be accommodated at the couple’s house for some days claiming Matamba required a thorough cleansing process. The seemingly unsuspicious Rwodzi agreed to Man’ombe’s request since he was desperate to have his wife cleansed. His marriage was also on the verge of collapse because of the wife’s incessant complaints that the only time she enjoyed sex was when she was making love with the goblin. In his bid to sexually dribble past his client, a source who spoke to B-Metro said Man’ombe asked Rwodzi and his wife to sleep in separate bedrooms saying if they

slept together that would disturb the cleansing process. After separating the couple, it is reported that during the night, Man’ombe would sneak into Matamba’s bedroom to have sexual intercourse with her under the pretext of cleansing her. He would allegedly tell her that the sexual intercourse was the only remedy for her problem. “One night, a suspicious Rwodzi woke up after he heard screams coming from his wife’s bedroom and when he went to investigate, he was shocked when he discovered the two-Matamba and Man’ombe having sex. “He brutally assaulted them and when he later confronted his wife, she confessed that Man’ombe

would regularly sneak into her bedroom and requested her to remove her clothes and have sexual intercourse with her as part of the cleansing process,” said the source who requested anonymity. The bashed Man’ombe, however, denied the accusations saying Matamba was the one who was inviting him to her bedroom saying her husband was sexually starving her. He also claimed that Matamba was the one who suggested that he should be accommodated at the house under the pretext that the cleansing process needed regular attention. Realising that Man’ombe had exposed her, Matamba reportedly packed her belongings and eloped with Man’ombe. - BMETRO

THE dad-of-six captioned a picture of his inkings that were complete with flies and corn remnants: ‘I got my little turds tatted on the backs of my leg’ A dad-of-six has been ridiculed for getting tattoos of his children’s poo on the back of his leg. The dad proudly shared the picture of his new inking - and the Internet was not impressed. His tattoos feature each of his children’s names, along with a sketch of their business. Viewers slammed his body-art as “f***ing gross.” There are five turds on his leg, with each child’s name below them, including Bobby, Riley, Lilliana, Chase, Silas and Leila – along with flies flying around the excrement to complete the artwork. The dad, who has not been named, shared the image to Facebook, captioning it: “I got my little turds tatted on the back of my leg… I <3 every sticking one of them.” It is not known where the dad lives. But it was later shared to Reddit, where users from around the world were united in disgust at the inkings. One person commenting on the post in sub-reddit r/trashy, which regularly features bad taste content, called it “the trashiest thing” they had ever seen. Someone else added: “Extra points for the realism of sweetcorn in the shit. Minus points for being f***ing gross.” “You got sh*** running down your leg,” wrote another. But not everyone hated it. One person said: “That has to be the most original tattoo I’ve ever seen awesome awesome awesome.” “Just ruined your whole leg,” wrote someone else. Another said: “I thought I had seen it all!!” - MIRROR

the images: “How it started vs How it’s going.” The post received mostly positive reactions, with tweeps expressing how they love their pork meat, while others found the post extremely fun. One follower though took it upon himself to say take a dig at Busiswa, with a snide comment, stating that the singer

Holstar in new album 'Kupeleka Nyali Ya Moto'

By TERENCE MISELO

ZAMBIAN pioneer in local hip-hop scene, Holstar has released his fifth album titled ‘Kupeleka Nyali Ya Moto (passing the torch)’. With this album Holster brings a diversity to the hip-hop sound with a mix of Afrofusion and Zambian Afrobeats. Filled with themes of social commentary, love and Pan-Africanism, Kupeleka Nyali Ya Moto symbolises the passing on of good working practices in the music industry to the young people coming after him. Holstar has been at the forefront of creating the music industry in Zambia and a vanguard in promoting and providing opportunities for fellow Zambian artistes with initiatives such as Slam Dunk Records and being a founding member and Manager of now disbanded Hip Hop group Zone Fam. He is musically inspired by hip-hop, 90s RnB, Jazz and infuses his love of Poetry and the laid back Zambian attitude that comes from growing up in Lusaka, to create a smooth, fresh, lyrical and universal sound inherently imbued with Zambian and African culture and experiences. His love for the continental sounds can be evidenced in the number of international artists featured on his latest 12 track offering, with songs sang in Nyanja, Igbo, Tonga, Shona, Chewa, Bemba alongside English. Holstar worked with Pro-G, Blaq on Da Beat, Reverb, Morgan the Syndicate, Shinko Beats and Kelvin Sarrz on production with Paul Kruz handling the mixing and mastering. Whilst Holstar features a great number of local talents such as Natasha Chansa, Tim, Solomon Plate, Muzo Zarahni, Luwizzy, Olimba, Kaladoshas, Thanel, Young Willy and Jayqe, he has also expanded his horizons and opened up lyrical borders with a number of continental features. Kupeleka Nyali Ya Moto also brings you the sounds of Soko Matemai and Synik from Zimbabwe, Maka from Nigeria, as well as Kim of Dia-

y past was so dark such that I didn't even have any hope to see the light. Worse off, I grew up in the Ghetto where I was raised with no hope of seeing the future," says Jethro Kandela, a 25-yearold entrepreneur and C.E.O whose desire is to share his story to inspire fellow young people. Kandela, owner of Jet One Enterprise famous for Jet One Car Wash based in Livingstone and Lusaka says young people must never give up in life but should always be determined to meet their dreams. "So what I can urge my fellow youths out there is if doors don't open for you never give up, you can try and force your way through the window. Never have limits to where hard work is concerned because we all have different targets and goals to achieve. Life is a twisted road dominated by unexpected twists and turns, However, at the end of the day, it is from them that we learn from," he says " Do not lose the hope in your heart even on days when success seems far, even when all the doors are closed, check for windows that's are left open to create an opportunity coz success is actually failure turned inside-out. " 1.WHO IS JETHRO AND HOW EXACTLY WAS YOUR BACKGROUND, GROWING UP? I lost my mom at the age of 6. I grew up from Lusaka's Mutendere compound and did my primary education from Mahatma Gandhi Primary school and later pursued my secondary school at New Mutendere secondary school. I then completed my G12 from David Livingstone High School. Growing up as a single orphan was never easy for me especially considering the fact that I lived from one home to another growing up without having a sense of belonging to a home and having to live with your family. When I relocated to Livingstone after my Grade 9 exams, I never had it easy. I passed but never had means or money to start my next Grade hence I had to start doing some pieces of jobs so I could raise funds for school. 2.WHAT JOBS DID YOU DO EXACTLY? I did different jobs that included bricklaying, painting, welding just to mention a few for my survival and

V

The album features some top Zambian artistes such as Chef 187, late Daev, F Jay, Stevo, Macky 2 and also some new wave artistes such as Natasha Chansa, Blake, Esii and Mutemwa. All songs were produced by Kb himself. See the leaked track list below.

through God's will, I managed to complete my high school education and came out as one of the best students at my school during my intake. Like that was not enough, tertiary education came but I didn't have the money and means to go to college so I gave up on my dreams untill I mate a lady By the name of Chambo Nsuluka who I used to worship at the same Church (Mount Zion in Lusaka) with. 3. HOW DID SHE HELP WITH YOUR LIFE? This lady used to mentor me and brought my dreams back to life, she advised that my grades were too good to be wasted. She asked me what I would love to study because I never fully believed in myself at the time, so I said I wanted to pursue purchasing and supply but she encouraged me to do something more challenging and at my level like accounts ZICA in particular. I refused coz I didn't have money but she asked me to go to her office and get whatever fees I needed to be in college. I could not believe what was happening coz I never saw my future in education. She paidid for everything

and I started learning. 4.HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE AT COLLEGE? So, the first semester I managed to clear my course and I was on to the next semester. Again she gave me tuition fees but then I decided to use that money to go to SA and order phones so I could multiply the money for other expenses as I didn't want to ask for money from her coz I felt she had already done a lot for me. So I went to Jonurg ordered second hand phones and started selling them on Ama Sample mu Lusaka a Facebook page and I would conduct business while I was in class. So I was balancing my hustle life and books furthermore it was just a must that I needed to study and pass. God willing time came and I made it finally I graduated. 5. WHAT WAS YOUR LIFE AFTER GRADUATION? I tried to apply for jobs or internship, nothing worked out untill I had to force myself out in the street to earn a living right inside Lusaka intercity.

From there I never gave up and never considered the fact that I did accounts, I just worked and hustled myself out untill I got a Job at Airtel as a customer service agent then I moved on to work with Zamtel and at the same time I was appointed as one of the station supervisors under FM Travellers. So at this stage I was balancing both my job as a customer service agent and as supervisor untill I started serving up to start my own business and started running a mobile money booth. 6. TELL US ABOUT THE BUSINESS SETUP Through dedication and savings with faith and determination, I opened my first car wash in Livingstone then recently opened up another car wash here in Lusaka which is doing fine under my brand name Jet One Enterprise. So what I can urge my fellow youths out there is if doors don't open for you never give up you can try and force your way through the window. So if I managed and did it what can stop you too from doing it? Always remember that God is not dead I'm a living testimony.

S

INCE 2002, COMACO - Community Markets for Conservation, has been reforming poachers and empowering them with skills such as conservation farming, bee keeping, carpentry, poultry farming and bricklaying as alternative and sustainable livelihoods.

According to the organization’s communications and outreach specialist Peter Banda, over 1700 reformed poachers have become productive members of their communities and are now earning legal income from various sources. We realized that once poachers completed their jail sentences, they went straight back to poaching. It became clear that poverty and food insecurity were the main drivers behind illegal poaching among people who live in game management areas. By providing people with alternative livelihoods, we have been able to reduce poaching as it is no longer the only choice people have. COMACO provides its skills to poachers who are willing to be reformed and hand over their muzzle loaders and wire snares used in poaching. To date, poachers have voluntarily surrendered 2000 illegal firearms and over 80 000 snares. Mr. Banda adds, “We have also trained some of our reformed poachers to help protect crop fields from elephant destruction. Under the supervision of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, they use their old muzzle-loading guns to blast chili at elephants that come near crop fields.” Chili has been used to keep elephants at bay as it has unpalatable to the crop-raiding mammals for decades. The chili used in the blasters does not cause lasting harm to elephants, it simply irritates them and forces them to leave the area. In addition to protecting food crops from elephant destruction, chili is a valuable cash crop that gives the reformed poachers an extra income. Last month, COMACO’s poacher reformation programme reached another milestone as it supported the formation of the TRANSFORMED POACHERS ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA, which will look at the welfare of its members and help reform people who are still engaged in poaching.

COMACO REFORMED POACHERS FORM ASSOCIATION

“This initiative is the first of its kind in Zambia, Africa and the world”, says Peter Banda. He adds, “The Association will be an important ally to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and others involved in conserving wildlife as members of the Association were once hardcore poachers, so they know all tricks that current poachers are using.” The Association’s chairman, Mr. Smoke Phiri, also has high hopes. The formation of the Transformed Poachers Association will give us authority to sensitize our communities on the im-

portance of conserving natural resources like wildlife and forests. We will also use this platform to appeal to others who are still involved in poaching to surrender their firearms and snares so that they can be empowered with a sustainable livelihood. The newly formed association will promote a peer-driven transformation of poachers into good and productive citizens that will positively contribute to national development. Success in this regard will result in reduced poaching of elephants and other important species in the Luangwa valley ecosystem.

The Association will also give hope to current poachers that if they reform, they too can have a meaningful and productive life void of the dangers they face in the wild, because though poachers are perceived to be tough and formidable, in reality poaching is a dangerous business. “Tracking wildlife in the bush requires that villagers leave their families for weeks at a time, traveling miles away from safety, and often risking encounters with wildlife, faulty firearms, or apprehension. If caught, a poacher can spend decades in prison, leaving his family vulnerable to hunger and exploitation without a reliable income source.” COMACO.
