ABDUCTION SCANDAL ROCKS UPND MAZABUKA
...victim who has been identified as Joseph Mombe is said to have been severely tortured by uniformed UPND cadres before his disappearance from home. By OLIVER SAMBOKO
A
N ADOPTED UPND candidate in Mazabuka risks being arrested for allegedly sending cadres to abduct a member of a rival camp within the party for campaigning for his opponent. The abducted victim who has been identified as Joseph Mombe is said to have been severely tortured by uniformed UPND cadres be-
fore his disappearance from home. Political violence among UPND camps competing for adoption in the opposition party, has escalated to alarming levels where some people are said to be missing after being abducted sometimes by known persons. And speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation, mother of the victim, Mable Moonga narrated that she was called on phone by unknown people who demand-
ed for a K6, 000 ransom before they could release her son. Ms Moonga said she only managed to raise K2, 200 which she sent yesterday leaving a balance of K300 after she negotiated for the ransom to be reduced to K2, 500. She said a docket and an enquiry in the matter has been opened at Mazabuka police station. And when contacted, the person on whose number
the money was sent, insisted that he was not a criminal because his phone was just used to receive the cash . He refused to disclose his name but claimed that Mr Mombe was not abducted but had instead assaulted someone who later wanted to be paid for the offence. Mr Mombe’s phone was by press time still un reachable. Mazabuka police have reportedly summoned the recipient of the money and the monther to Mr Mombe.
Chief warns troubleshooters By PETER SICHALI
VIOLENT political parties will not be allowed to campaign in my Chiefdom ahead of August,12 2021 general elections, Chief Chikwanda of Bemba people of Mpika District has said. Chief Chikwanda said it was important for political party leaders to set an example for their followers by denouncing all forms of violent behavior. Chief Chikwanda said it was important for leaders to condemn violence regardless of who was involved. Chief Chikwanda said he will not hesitate to take on po-
litical leaders who will be seen to be promoting violence. He said violence if not curtailed has potential to degenerate into civil war. Chief Chikwanda said he will de-campaign any political leader that will be found promoting political violence in his chiefdom. “We have been calling political leaders to denounce violence for a long time now, so this time around I will personally de campaign violent parties. I do not want my subjects to be turned into mere thugs because you are buying them beer,” Chief Chikwanda said. Chief Chikwanda said it was
important for politicians to safe guard the peace of the nation, stressing that there will be no country to govern if it is plunged into chaos. “It should be a responsibility of every politician to safe guard the peace that this country has enjoyed over the years, no one should die because of elections,” the traditional leader said. Chief Chikwanda said political parties should compete on the basis of ideologies and should avoid personal attacks which he said have been major causes of political violence. “Let people compete on basis of party manifestoes and

HH SNUBS PRAYERS From Page 1
His remarks comes after Mr Hichilema shunned yesterday’s National Prayer Initiative for Peaceful Elections at Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross. The national prayers were focused on praying for all candidates, for peaceful elections and issue-based campaigns ahead of the August 12 general elections and the mainstream churches in association with the Ministers Fellowship across Zambia organised the prayers at constituency and district levels which were held countrywide. In an interview, Professor Mwape said it was unfortunate that Mr Hichilema snubbed the prayer meeting despite it being organised by the church. “For us as Christian coalition, we are disappointed that HH has continued to politicize spiritual gatherings in the Christian nation. We therefore advise Zambians that HH is a wrong person who should not be allowed to rule this country and we are going to de-campaign him because he is a danger to the declaration of this country as a Christian nation,” Professor Mwape said. In this country, he said, we are not going to allow anyone who offers himself or herself for political office but does not respect spiritual gathering to rule us. To him everything is politics, we were expecting him to attend but we have marked his absenteeism. “We are going in every province to tell the Zambian people that leaders that have not honored God are wrong people to lead the nation. A Christian nation should be led by a person who obeys spiritual gathering,” he said. Meanwhile, speaking after attending the national prayers, President Edgar Lungu wondered why political party cadres have continued
to engage in violence when their leaders were not physically fighting each other. President Lungu said it does not make sense for political party cadres to be hacking each other when the children of their leaders were kept safe and away from political violence. Mr Lungu who reiterated his commitment to defend and uphold peace so as to maintain the country’s unmatched record as a beacon of peace challenged the media and Zambians at large to question the motive behind continued violence by cadres when their leaders were not fighting at all. “Let's find out why they fight when us leaders we don't fight. We leaders lead by example, but we wonder why they fight. For example, this guy (UNIP president Bishop Trevor Mwamba). Bishop Mwamba was my classmate and I don’t think we ever fight. Wynter Kabimba is also my former classmate, we did our law school and graduated together, we are friends. So why should our followers fight?” he asked. Delivering a homily, Pentecostal Assemblies of God Bishop (PAOG) Bishop Harrison Sakala urged Zambians to always have a good motive for whatever they were doing. Bishop Sakala said churches and citizens remain hopeful that the elections will be held in a peaceful manner and that the results will be credible and acceptable to all concerned. He however called for love and unity among the Zambian citizens before, during and after elections. Other notable opposition political party leaders that attended the prayers were UNIP’s Bishop Trevor Mwamba, Dr Nevers Mumba of MMD, Zambia Republic Party’s Wright Musoma and Peter Chanda of New Congress Party among others.
Lungu respects divergent Joe Malanji slams ‘idle’ opposition views - Nevers Mumba BY ROGERS KALERO

I CHERISH my cordial relationship with President Edgar Lungu who has respect for divergent views and I will never raise a disrespectful voice against him, New Hope MMD Leader, Nevers Mumba has said. And Dr Mumba said political party leaders that were aspiring to lead Zambia must put the interest of the nation above theirs. Dr Mumba said this in an interview yesterday after attending the National Prayer Initiative for Peaceful Elections at Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross themed, “proclaiming peaceful, issue based political campaigns to provide responsible leadership for the next five years of Zambia”. Dr Mumba who thanked the church for having organized the national prayers for peaceful campaigns said there was need for political leaders to love and talk to one another
as Zambia was old enough as a Christian nation to have leaders with no Christian values. He said there was need for politicians to coexist because Zambia was bigger than any individual politician. “Politics come and go, God will always be there and Zambia will always be there, so let us not be too small but big enough to coexist with others. Those who want to lead the country should put the interest of Zambia above theirs,” Dr Mumba said. Asked how he could describe his relationship with President Lungu, Dr Mumba said, “My relationship with the President is good and there is no any enmity between me and him.” The MMD leader added, “He (President Lungu) has never raised a voice against me and you will never hear me raise a voice that is disrespectful against him. So you can be assured that this is the type of a relationship we want to see amongst ourselves across respective political parties.”
MOST opposition UPND Members of Parliament (MP) are resistant to development and have failed to construct even a toilet in their constituencies despite being hard core critics of the Patriotic Front (PF) government and its development agenda, " Kwacha MP Joe Malanji has said. Mr Malanji said some UPND MPs who have been in parliament for more than 15 years have delivered nothing in their constituencies apart from exhibiting bitterness through hate speech and attacking President Edgar Lun-
gu and his government Mr Malanji was speaking yesterday during a rally at Changanamai grounds in Kwacha township which was attended by PF national chairman for mobilisation Richard Musukwa, PF Kitwe Mayoral candidate Mpasa Mwaya, Kamfinsa constituency candidate Christopher Kangómbe and Kitwe district PF chairman Evaristo Chilufya among others. Mr Malanji said the confusion which had rocked the UPND and the resignation of notable personalities from the party to join the ruling PF was a clear indication that Mr hichilema had failed to pro-
vide leadership in the party He said he was grateful to the people of Kwacha constituency for their support in the five years he has been MP and was asking for another term from them. And speaking later, PF national chairman for mobilisation Richard Musukwa said it was utter nonsense for the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to claim that he will fix the economy when he brought misery to the communities of Luanshya after the privatisation of the mine in the area "These UPND people don't mean well for this country. TAME CADRES, POLITICAL LEADERS URGED By NOEL IYOMBWA
IT is political leaders who can tame their cadres against political violence during and after elections, Bishops council of Zambia general secretary Able Kaela has said. Bishop Kaela said political violence can only be stopped by political leaders by denouncing violence and advising their cadres to be tolerant towards other political parties. He said political leaders should denounce political violence in their respective parties this year’s elections. Bishop Kaela said political leaders political must be held to account, for any political violence. He called on political leaders, in particular and media to unequivocally reject conspiracy theories and the actions of cadres who use violence. “Safeguarding security, and
rights of people and communities requires political parties whose leaders can accept the election results, bridge divisions that can be ironed out and stand up for democracy. “We call on political leaders to protect the country’s democracy by ensuring that the country holds peaceful elections this year, “ he said. He further called on youths to avoid being hired by politicians to perpetuate violence against opponents. Bishop Kaela observed that it is common for some politicians to hire youths to cause violence. The clergy man noted that political violence is a coercive and deliberate strategy used by some political actors to advance their interests or achieve specific political goals in relation to an electoral contest. He called on the church to
Bishop Kaela play a leading role in ensuring that the country holds peaceful elections by denouncing and condemning political violence during and after elections. “As a church we have a role to play in ensuring that there is peace during and after elections by denouncing political violence and praying for the country. “Youths in the country should avoid being used by selfish politicians who sometimes hire them to cause anarchy during campaigns and after elections, “ he said.

Dr Malama said the international initiatives had been set up to support COVID-19 vaccine supply in Africa. He said in a statement that members of the public who have not yet received their first dosage should not panic about the availability of the vaccine because government was making efforts to ensure every citizen was catered for. He said more than 40 countries in Africa are vaccinating their people,

THE commissioning of Kazungula Bridge will spur the tourism industry in the SADC region as it opens up the Zambezi Trans frontier Conservation Area as a preferred tourism destination, Tourism expert Rose Musonda has said. Ms Musonda said the Zambezi Trans frontier was important because of its several
attractions including the Victoria Falls and Okavango Delta in Botswana. She said it’s important for players in the tourism industry to start positioning themselves and take advantage of the opening of the $260 Million bridge which will lead to tourists having access to the attraction along the Zambezi basin. Ms Musonda said the Kazungula Bridge will provide easy
Protect party interests, avoid going solo – PF member By OLIVER SAMBOKO
PF Kanyama Constituency aspiring candidate Chris Changwereza has called on those not adopted on the ruling party ticket to put the interest of the party and Zambia first by avoiding the temptation of standing as independents as this may cost the party. He joins Matero aspiring candidate Dickson Jere who has called for unity of purpose from party members not adopted by the party to rally behind the President and the party. Mr Changwereza said true members of the PF should set aside their personal interests and focus on ensuring that the party return power and continue spearheading the development agenda for the benefit of the people of Zambia. He said it’s not possible for the ruling party to adopt everyone who applied because there can only be one person to contest in any given constituency. Mr Changwereza who has since accepted the de-
cision by the Central Committee not to adopt him, was speaking on Friday night at Anglican Church in Kanyama where he officiated as guest of honor at the musical album launch by Destiny Christian Praise Band. He said his focus now is to go flat out to campaign and mobilize votes for President Lungu and the Patriotic Front. Mr Changwereza said as much as he feels hurt that he was not adopted by the ruling party to represent the people of Kanyama in the National Assembly, he will remain loyal to President Edgar Lungu and party. He said those who are contemplating to contest as independents should remember that the Patriotic Front was bigger than any one individual and therefore should reflect deeply on their decision. Mr Changwereza said deciding to go independent was only going to advantage the opposition as it has the potential to split the vote.

hence it remains for the continent to secure more vaccines to support a successful vaccination. Meanwhile, Dr Malama said Zambia has vaccinated an addition of 7,417 persons against COVID-19 bringing the total vaccinated to 107,790 as of Friday, May 14, 2021. He added that the country has in the last 24hours recorded 53 new cases of COVID-19 out of 6,171 tests done across the country, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases to 92,409. Dr Malama revealed that the recorded cases were from 19 districts of which nine cases are from Central, five from Copperbelt, Eastern five, Luapula one, Lusaka recorded 21, Muchinga one, Northern five, North-Western two, Southern one and Western Province recorded three.
Ms Musonda said the bridge was not only important to Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana but to the whole SADC region as it will facilitate seamless travel of tourists in the region. She was also optimistic that the Government of Zambia and Botswana will consider the concerns raised by stakeholders on the exorbitant toll fees at the newly constructed Bridge. She said the fees were too high and prohibitive therefore will result in tourists shunning the area.

Mr. Ngulube said the PF through President Edgar Lungu has demonstrated its commitment to improve the wellbeing of Zambians and would continue to make it a priority for the people if it was given another mandate to govern the country. The readopted candidate for Kabwe Central constituency said he would engage the local authority to ensure that some of the projects which have partially been commissioned are completed on time. “We have partially commissioned some of the projects because time has ran out and

we are getting into the election campaigns but I will make sure that the council completes them,” he said. And Central province police commissioner, Chola Katanga said the police post would help curb crime in the area. Mr. Katanga who was represented by Kasanda police station officer in charge, Steven Mwamba commended the government for the massive infrastructure development in the police service and other sectors of the economy.
ERB suspends issuance of construction permits for filling stations THE Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has suspended the issuance of construction permits for new filling stations within Lusaka District, for the next 6 months. The Board has also stopped reviewing Environmental Project Briefs (EPBs) for new filling stations in Lusaka district for the same period. Among the revised siting guidelines for filling stations is the allowable distance between operating filling stations from 500 meters to 300 meters countrywide with immediate effect. This was contained in a statement issued by ERB Public Relations Manager Kwali Mfuni, in Lusaka yesterday. Ms Mfuni has however, assured that the revised guidelines on construction permits, won’t apply to proposed rehabilitation, and reconstruction or already existing filling stations. In highlighting the resolutions of the Board, she further remarked on the board’s resolution to constitute a multi-sectoral technical Committee consisting of various experts from relevant government ministries and agencies to facilitate the refinement of guidelines in the said period. “The committee would conduct a comprehensive study during the six (06) months period to assess the risks associated with the existing concentration of filling stations in the various localities in Lusaka town as well as the feasibility and consequent impact of approving additional filling stations within Lusaka,” she noted Mfuni also alluded to the guidelines as being a result of efforts by the Board to ensure it executes its mandate more effectively amidst the dynamics that have become apparent in the petroleum sub-sector. “In 2019 the ERB commenced the process of revising the Guidelines for Siting of filling stations in response to emerging issues in the petroleum sub-sector,” she said. - ZANIS

ROW OVER CHEATING T
HERE was drama in the Central Business District yesterday when a man was bashed by his lover in a parked car.
The incident took more than 10 minutes forcing some onlookers to open the Nissan Xtrail door – ADJ 9573 – to save the man from further beating by the woman only identified as Vimbai. Vimbai was heard shouting accusing her lover of dating other women before slapping and punching him while tearing his shirt in the process. “Murume arohwa zvakaipa veduwee. Mukadzi anorova uyu,” one of the onlookers said. Two ladies arrived and warned Vimbai over further assaulting her lover. The two covered themselves with their jackets as scores of people gathered before they sped off. The two refused to entertain H-Metro to comment on their contention. The incident took place along George Silundika Avenue next to a hair salon.
MUBOBOBO MAN MEETS HIS MATCH:
Mutumwa intervenes after 50 women ravished A BINGA businessman reportedly ravished more than 50 village women through mubobobo, a sexual act through the use of charms, while the women’s husbands were condemned to wet dreams through romping with spiritual beasts.
It is said the stranger than fiction acts had been going on for at least a decade until a Bulawayo-based prophet was recently invited to the area for deliverance sessions. The tormented women heaved a sigh of relief after the man’s charms were vanquished by prominent Bulawayo-based prophet Madzibaba Emmanuel Mutumwa. The alleged villager from Masenya village in Binga is also said to be a businessman and a polygamist with three wives. According to Madzibaba Mutumwa, who preferred not to reveal the identity of the man,the man not only abused women from the vil-

lage but four children also, including a three-month-old infant. So evil and powerful were this man’s charms that it made these women’s husbands not to feel any sexual desire towards them, as they felt satisfied, every morning after experiencing ‘wet dreams’, where they say they dreamt of themselves committing bestiality with cows. “Their private parts were in a state of decay. It was only after some members from the village approached
me seeking deliverance that I travelled to Binga to assist them. The female members from my church confirmed this after I received a prophecy from the Almighty. The men from the village were sleeping with cows spiritually and this made them feel no sexual desire towards their wives. ‘It was during the ceremony that we were led to his home through God’s guidance to discover the charms, which he kept in his bedroom,” said Madzibaba Mu-
tumwa. He said after the charms were discovered and destroyed the man requested to be delivered. “He requested deliverance and by the power of God he was. We had been in Binga for a 12-day conference and a lot was discovered there. A lot of work needs to be done in the town in terms of spiritual healing and deliverance, as many people there rely on charms and are involved in witchcraft,” said Madzibaba Mutumwa.

ugly scene remained serene as the issue got to be handled amicably. The 23-year-old marriage between Muchawaya and Mukwada seems irretrievably broken after this incident with Muchawaya saying he would seek audience from the courts of law. The two were blessed with two children in their marriage with the eldest being 20 and the other turning 10 soon. “This man here has been in love with my wife from August last year as he says. “I don’t want to cause any incidences with this man
because it’s my wife who could have lied to him. “I have been married to Mukwada for the past 23 years and imagine that just after completing building our house that is when all these dramas are beginning to manifest. “I will get sanctuary from the courts; I don’t have to be violent. “We should show maturity and move on. This has become too much. “It is high time people know what caused the crumble of this marriage,” said Muchawaya. Marwa said he met Mukwada on social network Fa-
cebook where they got to fall in love although they had not met physically for interaction. “I only met Mukwada once in Zengeza 5 but she was busy talking to other people that I just greeted her and went away. “I was supposed to meet her today after all this while that is why I came,” said Marwa. Marwa said it was his first time at the house and he had texted on the wrong phone being used by Muchawaya and he got to know of it when he was already in the house when he was cornered.
According to sources, the couple had been cohabiting as husband and wife for the past 15 years. Mashonaland West police spokesperson, Inspector Magaret Chitove told H-Metro that the horrific incident happened on March 25 at around 11am. On the day in question, Nhunge requested for a drink and some biscuits from the now deceased Mhlanga, who refused arguing hubby was not providing food for the family. This angered Nhunge resulting in an altercation. Said Chitove, “Nhunge in a moment of madness, struck his wife with a pot on her left eye, resulting in its handle breaking. He went to another room before returning armed with a knife. “Nhunge closed windows and locked the door from inside and continued assaulting Mhlanga. He stabbed her several times on the neck and chest resulting in her instant death.” A neighbour Rangai Hunda informed police who attended to the scene leading to Nhunge’s arrest. A relative to the now deceased told H-Metro she rushed to the murder scene after her neighbours alerted her. “When l got to the scene l saw Amai Ashley lying dead with stab wounds on her body. I enquired what had led to her killing and some neighbours said it was a row over cool drink meant for their school-going kids.” A vegetable vendor, who had earlier on talked to Mhlanga, said that she was given $50 bond by the now deceased to buy her some mixed vegetables at the market. Upon her return, the two had a brief conversation before the now deceased went into her
house. Momentarily, there was rancor as the couple started to fight with Mhlanga screaming for help, narrated the vendor. Nhunge then came out of the house with a blood-stained Tshirt, prompting fellow neighbours to panic. Further narrated the vendor, “He looked menacing as he threatened anyone who dared come to his house. We never imagined he had killed his wife.” Police urged members of the public to desist from violence in trying to solve domestic disputes. “We continue to urge members of the public to observe the sanctity of life and to find better ways of solving disputes amicably. They must desist from engaging in violent behaviour so as to avoid loss of life,” said the police spokesperson. H-METRO

K Singer Nathan says ‘No to Violence’
By TERENCE MISELO
KAFUE-BASED musician Nathan Sakala popularly known as Nackis Foshize has released a new single dubbed ‘ Say No to Violence’ in his effort to promote peace ahead of Zambia’s August 12 elections. The singer who is well-known for concious music says it is important for our nation to say no to violence and uphold the peace our country is known for. Born from Eastern Province’s Chipangali district, Nathan says he believes in One Zambia, One Nation hence the need to preach peace. “ I want our country to have
peace so that we continue leaving in a good land, one that is well-known for peace,” he said. He has expressed concern over some of the pockets of violence that tend to emerge during elections and insists that his song is merely an appeal for us all to do the right thing. “I did this song to remind all Zambians that we are one people and peace should be our goal,” he said. ‘Say No to Violence’ is set in a sweat reggae melody with clear vocals. It is a blend of some dancehall rap and soft tempo. It is one song suitable for education on political violence.
Jennifer Lopez is 'in a different place' following Ben Affleck reconciliation
JENNIFER Lopez is “in a different place” since the last time she dated Ben Affleck, which sources say has made their connection stronger than ever. The “Hustlers” star has been spending time with the 48-yearold following her split from Alex Rodriguez, and sources have said the pair – who previously dated 17 years ago – have both grown since their break-up. An insider said: "It doesn't seem possible that [Jennifer] would ever get back with Alex, but I can't say that about Ben. “Time has passed, and they are each in a different place with children.” Jennifer – who has 13-yearold twins Max and Emme with
ex-husband Marc Anthony – reportedly wants to spend “as much time as possible” with Ben, but sources insist they aren’t rushing into anything just yet. The source added: “She wants to spend as much time with Ben as possible to see where this could go. They are certainly not making any plans about the future.” And although things between them might not last, friends of Jennifer and Ben – who is father to Violet, 15, Seraphina, 12, and Samuel, nine, whom he has with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner – think their current arrangement is “good for both of them”. - IOL

MOSI brand goes 'Green' By TERENCE MISELO FROM hosting the country’s biggest music festival to empowering the arts and design industry, Zambian Breweries has often brought Zambians together in celebration of truly Zambian moments inspired by Mosi Premium Lager. This was evident last Thursday at the Polo Grounds in Lusaka where entertainers, celebrities, partners and people of all walks of life witnessed the rebranding of the Mosi Premium Lager to embrace the ' Green' campaign by Zambian Breweries. “In our landscape, our great people and delicious food of this country, we believe that being Zambian should be embraced and celebrated. Despite our differences, we can all agree that the most phenomenal Zambian moments are better experienced together. The ‘Our Green’ campaign is about us sticking together as Zambians and celebrating the national treasure we all share in Mosi Premium Lager. And that is why we brought all these Zambian inspired Greens together for Mosi’s new look as a symbol of our unity despite our differences”, said Zambian Breweries Country Director Jose Moran to explain the rebranding of the Mosi Premium Lager. Inspired by the vast greens in our beautiful country, the popular beer has decided to go green as a step to not only tasting great but also keeping up with the times and offering a progressive and stylish looking beer. Identifying Mosi Premium Lager with a colour that symbolises our national spirit of oneness is an effort to combine the youthful energy of the beer with the green elements in our everyday lives as Zambians. This event was therefore attended by some of Zambia's top musicians and celebrities including The PR Girl Media, Roberto, Mumba Yachi, K'Chinga, King Illest, Nez Long , Bobby East, Roxy Jones and Mic Burner to name only a few.

HILE legal game meat outlets are starting to pop up around the country, especially in Lusaka. Many people who may be interested in joining the industry still have unanswered questions. Information on the matter can often be limited. Then there is the misconception that indigenous Zambians cannot succeed in this industry. This is despite the fact that a number of indigenous Zambians have successfully set up their legal game meat retail businesses.
In a recent conversation two indigenous Zambians, who run legal game meat outlets in Livingstone and Lusaka respectively, shared their experiences and opinions on the industry and why it is so important for wildlife conservation efforts in Zambia. Like any other business, the legal game meat retail business has many challenges and opportunities. One challenge that came up repeatedly in our conversations was the need to establish a healthy and sustainable relationship with your meat supplier, in this case, a game farmer. This can take time and as the industry is still in its infancy and thus trust is yet to be established fully. Chilekwa Mukonge, a Lusaka trader and new player in the industry emphasized that persistence is key to setting up. Another challenge is the duration of the trading permit application process which can vary depending on a range of factors such as the process of ensuring that the applicant has complied with all the necessary requirements. Samson Kandala, who has run a game meat business in Livingstone for about two years now, waited for a slightly longer period for his permit as compared to Ms Mukonge whose permit took only took three months. Pursuing success in this business clearly requires one to be driven. It is not enough to only want to set up the business, but one needs to have a passion for what the legal game meat business does for wildlife. Samson Kandala said, “the hardest part of the process was obtaining a recommen-
GETTING INTO THE LEGAL GAME MEAT RETAIL BUSINESS
dation from a game farmer”. For people in cities, this can be a challenge because most game farmers are located on the outskirts of town, but fortunately you can visit www. wpazambia.com for lists of game farmers in Zambia. “I simply had to write a letter expressing what I was requesting” said Ms Mukonge who initially started with an online research and found little information on how to set up a legal retail game meat outlet. She wrote a letter that
she personally delivered to the headquarters of the Department of National parks and wildlife in Chilanga. Similarly, Mr Kandala also wrote to the Livingstone office and the letter was sent to the Headquarters in Lusaka. Feedback for both retailers from the Department was that an inspection was going to be conducted to ensure the premises of the outlets were up to standard, water, and electricity availability among other things. A report was written
and after two weeks they were contacted to collect their permits to trade. Despite the challenges, the legal game meat retail business presents many opportunities. Apart from job creation and the pioneering work involved, Chilekwa Mukonge, owner of Urban Hunters said that it is a more sustainable way of consuming wildlife meat as compared to the illegal bushmeat trade. Samson Kandala, owner of Pasawi General Trading in
Livingstone also mentioned that the business has the potential to reduce illegal bushmeat consumption which in turn would help stabilize wildlife populations in our national parks. Clearly anyone can venture into legal game meat retailing. It is important to be patient and persistent in any business to get what you want. To get the ball rolling, all that must be done is drafting a letter to the Department of National Parks And Wildlife expressing interest. The risks posed by the illegal bushmeat trade to Zambia’s wildlife cannot be ignored as it is the biggest threat to our wildlife. If you would like to contribute to the legal game meat industry, support the legal game meat retailers. The more legal game meat we buy the more the demand grows. This can mean growth for the legal game
meat industry and reduced illegal bushmeat trade. Game farming, the raising wildlife on private or community land, is a sustainable way of sourcing game meat because farmed animals increase overtime and can be cropped. Game meat sourced in this way is also safer for human consumption as the meat is only made available to licensed outlets after both the animal and its carcass have been inspected and ensured fit for consumption. Compared to the illegal bushmeat trade that involves indiscriminate poaching of wildlife in national parks and game management areas, game farming/ranching is certainly a viable alternative. Another drawback with the illegal bushmeat industry comes from the fact that poachers often process their illegal kill in unhygienic conditions, posing a serious threat to public health. Unlicensed bushmeat is sold to members of the public who may not be sure if what they are consuming is healthy or safe. It further decreases the potential growth of tourism and the legal game-farming industry.

H IT W IT F G IN P E E K Y H W HIIT REALLY DOES WORK I
F you love low-volume HighIntensity Interval Training (HIIT) or trying to love this form of exercise, you may just have another reason to commit to it regularly. A new review paper published in The Journal of Physiology collates a decade’s worth of research on the topic of this so-called low-volume high HIIT for health. The current World Health Organisation (WHO) physical activity guidelines 150-300 min of moderate activity/week or 75-100min of vigorous activity/week. It may be unattainable for a large portion of the population who are time poor due to family or work commitments. This hypothesis is supported by the increasing rates of physical inactivity amongst adults in high income countries. The findings of this study show that low-volume HIIT (typically involving less than ~20 mins total exercise time - inclusive of warm up and cool down) yields comparable improvements to interventions meeting the current guidelines despite requiring significantly less time. So, what is low-volume HIIT? As HIIT involves active periods of work interspersed with recovery periods, the researchers defined
low-volume HIIT as interventions which included less than 15 minutes of high intensity exercise per session (not including recovery periods). This review builds on the authors’ recent study published in Diabetes Care which showed that as little as 4-min of HIIT 3 times per week for 12 weeks significantly improved blood sugar levels, fat in the liver, and cardio respiratory fitness in adults with type 2 diabetes. They also showed that these improvements were comparable to an intervention involving 45-min of moderate intensity aerobic exercise. Dr Angelo Sabag, corresponding author of the study said: “While the WHO guidelines may serve their purpose at a populational level, individualised and tailored low-volume HIIT interventions delivered by appropriately trained exercise professionals may be more effective at an individual level, especially for time-poor individuals. This research is especially important now as people are looking for new and exciting ways to engage in regular exercise, after a year of lower physical activity due to the pandemic.” Nombulelo Mgabadeli, a certi-

TAME VIOLENT CADRES AS the country inches closer to the August 12 general elections, there is need to ensure that all forms of violence are eliminated. Politicians have the responsibility to ensure that their supporters respect the rule of law and avoid engaging in activities that tend to lead to violence. It is unfortunate that clashes between political parties are becoming all too often in the Zambia, especially during elections. People failing to disagree peacefully is now a common feature and source of conflict. Yet as a Christian nation, one would expect that citizens would be ready to engage in any debate without resorting to physical confrontation. Alas, the temptation to resort to physical confrontation seems to be gaining ground, something that should worry all leaders. Traditional leaders are rightly speaking about this unfortunate situation, as Chief Chikwanda of the Bemba speaking of Mpika has pointed out, political leaders should take the lead and ensure that their supporters also known as cadres, are tamed. Chief Chikwanda has gone a step further to warn that he would not allow violent political parties to campaign in his chiefdom ahead of the August 2021 elections. The chief said it was important for political party leaders to set an example for their followers by denouncing all forms of violent behavior. Like most Zambians who want peace, the chief has said it was important for leaders to condemn violence regardless of who was involved. He warned that violence if not curtailed has potential to degenerate into civil war. And the Bishops Council of Zambia general secretary, Able Kaela, has also expressed similar sentiments warning political leaders to tame their cadres against political violence during and after elections. Bishop Kaela said political violence can only be stopped by political leaders denouncing violence and advising their cadres to be tolerant towards other political parties. Yesterday another attempt was made to bring political leaders together in prayer under the National Prayer Initiative for Peaceful Elections under the theme, proclaiming peaceful, issue based political campaigns to provide responsible leadership for the next five years of Zambia. Yet again the major opposition party was missing from the prayers attended by President Edgar Lungu and many other political leaders taking part in the August elections. The absence of the country’s major opposition from an initiative by the church to bring leaders together in an effort to create some form of harmony is disappointing. It is a stark reminder of the uphill battle the country has in trying to find consensus. It is also disappointing that a party operating in a Christian nation consistently rejects any efforts to gather in prayer for peaceful elections. Where is the faith of the leaders? One would be forced to ask when the same people consistently refuse to take part in national prayers. What are they praying for? The prayer of every well-meaning Zambia is to have peaceful elections and for all those taking part to accept the outcome. It is, therefore, important that the stage is set to ensure that a peaceful atmosphere is created now and going forward. Let Zambia remain the regional example of a people who treasure peace and make efforts to protect this.
ZAMBIA’S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION FIGHT GOES ON By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE
T
he eventually settled for the MDC leader to the total betrayal of his loyal deputy Mutale Nalumango – much to the chagrin of her UPND grassroots supporters. Mr Hichilema claimed that on the backdrop of unity, Zambia would achieve and recover what it had lost in the past. He also dispelled people masquerading as his relatives, accusing the PF of parading them before cameras to discredit him. While the MDC president also called for sacrifice if PF government was to be removed from power. Meanwhile ZED party leader Enerst Mwansa complained that Zambia had been destroyed by people with selfish motives. Whereas, the ex-PF senior member Kelvin Bwalya Fube popularly known as KBF, he condemned the undemocratic vices which he claimed had potential to divide the country. He also claimed that the alliance members had resolved to unite the nation. Calling on Zambians to get united in voting out the PF from power further assuring the nation that the alliance would restore the rule of law in the country. Although this alliance has been dubbed by critics and opponents as the “coalition of the failed-attempt protagonists”, owing to the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema’s pending serial sixth
HIS year Zambia will hold its general elections on August 12. And the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshindano disclosed that 19 political parties had paid the K95,000 requirement for presidential nominations. He however explained that it did not mean that all 19 contestants would stand in the 2021 general election as there were other requirements that the presidential candidates needed to have. Meanwhile, the recently formed “The Zambia We Want” Alliance formed an electoral pact with the UPND Alliance ahead of these polls. The “Zambia We Want” Alliance comprises the MDC led by Felix Mutati, Zambia Shall Prosper Movement led by Kelvin Fube, ZED party led by Ernest Mwansa and Movement for Change and Equality led by Kaluba Simuyemba. Interestingly though, the race is turning out to be a battle of electoral pacts consisting of Zambia’s two main political parties. And observers are wondering if there is a magic formula for holding successful polls in the country, based on electoral pacts. Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka, UPND president Hakainde Hichilema called on Zambians to reunite in removing the PF from government. He condemned tribalism, which he said was dividing the country. Yet, it is common knowledge that for a time he had been looking for a running mate who would bring in more votes from the Bemba-dominated Copperbelt, Luapula, Muchinga and Northern provinces to boost his chances. To this end, he had made forays into these four voterich and populous provinces seeking a suitable deputy, despite having an incumbent Bemba-speaking UPND vice president already on board. Clearly though, it appeared after rummaging through the bazaar of Zambia’s one-man President Lungu political parties, among other smaller parties;
failed-attempt at Zambia’s presidency in August and MDC leader Felix Mutati’s failure to secure the country’s much-needed fiscal fitness and the IMF bailout package during the whole period he served as Minister of Finance in the current PF government, it is yet the team to watch. Besides, the duo had worked together in another failed-attempt at Zambia’s presidency in the 2015 presidential by-election. But will anything tangible change this time around? Probably not! As for KBF, he sprang a surprise when he suddenly emerged from the cobwebs of loyalty and challenged his boss President Edgar Lungu for the PF’s presidential candidacy. His move upset the PF’s formbook in which it had long been assumed that the incumbent’s presidential ticket was a formality, thanks to the grassroots’ opinion that gave him an unassailable support. At first KBF’s challenge to President Lungu was seen as feeble and inconsequential, given the latter’s political standing and the country’s cherished projects he had introduced and implemented in infrastructure and socio-economic development. So the question asked by many people was: “Just what inspired KBF to oppose President Lungu?” Known and unknown to
many, KBF had used his position as a senior official in the ruling PF to self-endear his image to the Facebook millennial followers on social media. The PF’s top brass discovered this very late, and despite attempts at damage control, they could not derail KBF’s self-centered cyber-train. Rather, earlier this month, KBF cited high-handedness and the lack of internal democracy in the ruling PF as the reason why he was leaving the party for the rival UPND. His departure is perhaps the least vital ingredient yet to boost Hichilema’s chances of winning the much-coveted Zambian presidency. As compared to other “Zambia We Want” Alliance defectors to the UPND, Ernest Mwansa and Kaluba Simuyemba’s moves are without the support of influential Bemba-speaking regional kingpins. These two people, with Hichilema at the helm, do not represent the country’s crucial Bemba-speaking electoral vote baskets. Zambians are watching the unfolding scenario with a lot of interest. In many observers’ opinion Hichilema’s sixth quest for Zambia’s presidency is again as good as dead. Besides in its heyday, under the leadership of the late Anderson Mazoka, the UPND did not need alliance partners, it was not just a political party but also a mass movement. It was a gigantic political machine arousing deep emotions and with a revolutionary streak. Twenty years later and all that gravitas held by what was then arguably one of Zambia’s most exciting political establishments, has gone down the drain. In addition to this, the charm offensive of the government is succeeding with a good number of voting Zambians – especially in Southern, North-Western and Western provinces. These regions have always been seen as bastions of the opposition UPND. But some analysts now say the tide is turning, citing several reasons. Nowadays, it is common sight to see chiefs in these provinces joining meetings of the President before or after political rallies. The inference being that they share Mr Hichilema the political aspirations of the governing party as Zambia’s presidential election fight goes on.

I WOULD like to condemn in the strongest terms the statement by the Lamba Lima Council Executive Chairman Mr Josphat Nsundwe that the Council will de-campaign PF Parliamentary Candidate for Lufwanyama Mr Don Mundubile simply because he is not a subject of any of the Chiefdoms in Lufwanyama District. I would like to remind Mr. Nsundwe that as a Zambian Mr Don Mungulube enjoys certain rights and privileges under the supreme law of the land, the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia. In Particular, I would like to point out the following articles to Mr. Nsundwe. i. Article 23 in the Bill of Rights of the current Constitution protects all Zambian citizens from discrimination on the basis of tribe. ii. The preamble of the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Act No.2 of 2016, states as follows “WE; THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA: ACKNOWLEDGE the supremacy of God Almighty; DECLARE the Republic a Christian Nation while upholding a person’s right to freedom of conscience, belief or religion; UPHOLD the human rights and fundamental freedoms of every person; COMMIT ourselves to upholding the principles of democracy and good governance; RESOLVE to ensure that our values relating to family, morality, patriotism and justice are

maker of Mwandi constituency. She was jailed in 2012 for circulating obscene materials likely to corrupt the moralsof the people. She has since reformed and she has in the recent past been involved in community works in uplifting the welfare of the vulnerable people. However, the adoption of Iris and Tasila by the Patriotic Front party has set a good tone and clearly demonstrates the party's commitment to empower young people with leadership roles in political spheres. Gone are the days when political leadership was a preserve of the old people. Things are slowly but surely changing such that young people are taking up the mantle of leadership to serve. As the Bemba adage goes, "imiti ikula empanga" (the young people of today are the future leaders). The adage implies that the young people are the future leaders. In view of the aforementioned, I implore leaders of the various political parties to empower the young people with leadership roles. The right time to empower the young people is now. It is disheartening that the youth have in most cases been used as tools of political violence particularly during election time. This should not be the case. All said and done, I wish Iris and Tasila all the best in the forthcoming general elections scheduled for Thursday August 12, 2021. If the above is not good enough, other youth should take a leaf from Iris and Tasila by aspiring for public office in future elections. ELEMIYA PHIRI Lusaka.

A lone first half goal from midfielder Godfrey Ngwenya handed Zesco United a second consecutive defeat having been beaten 1-0 by Nkana FC on Wednesday to drop six points from the last two games. Ngwenya put Power Dynamos in the lead with a powerful long range shot 24 minutes into the first half to secure a win for the Masauso Tembo drilled Power Dynamos. The win over Zesco United propelled Power Dynamos to 41 points while maintaining seventh position on the Super Division tables. Kabangwe Mwaba broke the deadlock in the 65th minute before Josphat Kasusu doubled the lead eight minutes later. Akakulubelwa Mwachiaba scored the consolation goal from a penalty two minutes before the final whistle but it was too late to help the Kabwe based Super League outfit from avoiding defeat. Chibale, Mutiya chase Prudential Golf title By MUKWIMA CHILALA NDOLA golfer Gabriel Chibale yesterday shot a second round leading score of level par 70 to come to within three shots of the top spot dominated by Madalitso Mutiya on a scoring round at the ongoing Prudential Classic golf championship at Chilanga golf club. Going into round two, Chibale was six shots behind leader Madalitso Muthiya but halved that deficit and jumped from fifth to third place. On day one, Chibale scored one-over-par 71 while Muthiya was on five-under-par 65 and will feel he can pull this one off in today's closing round. Chibale said after this round, he had a real shot at the title and would give his best today to claim a first Professional Golfers Association of Zambia (PGAZ) title. Should he shoot better than yesterday's score, he would have improved his score on each day, the only player in the top five to manage this.
Leader Muthiya went threeover-par 73, the same score brought home by local star Dezzie Ng'andu who stayed one shot off the top. After the first two rounds, Muthiya led with a total two-
under-par 138, one shot better than Ng'andu while Chibale was in third, a further two shots off while Patrick Mwendapole and Sydney Wemba were tied for fourth place with a three over par 143. Victor Kachepatsonga of Malawi was the best performing foreign player on eightover-par 148 while compatriot Paul Chidale and Samba Niang of Senegal were on four shots off. Lusaka golfer Musamba Kapoma was the best performing amateur on seven over par 147 and was commanding a five shot lead. She named them as Prudential Insurance, Magnum Security, Bigtree, part of the Trade Kings Group and manufactures of Vatra, Mass Breeding investment, The Hydraulics Zambia, Reliant Mining, Sandy's Creation, Supreme Chicken and Minor Hotels.
