VARIOUS organizations have expressed concern over the disappearance of the Hatembos with the Democracy and Motherland Defenders Coalition (DMDC) demanding that the police find them within 72 hours. And DMDC Spokesperson Andrew Ntewewe says the coalition infers that their dis-
appearance has to do with the litigation against Hakainde Hichilema. Mr. Ntewewe during a press briefing said the Coalition has since demanded that the police find the Hatembos within 72 hours as an assurance that Zambians can go to court to exercise their rights without fear of
any kind. And The Political Science Association of Zambia President Joe Ndambwa says the disappearance of the two is worrying and further urging the Police to get to the bottom of the matter as quickly as possible. Mr Ndambwa told ZNBC news in a walk in interview
that he is confident that the Police have the capacity to find the two missing family members. Pheluna and Milton Hatembo are key witnesses in the matter involving the Kalomo farm plot alleged to have been purchased by UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema. - ZNBC.

…as NDC goes ahead to hold its convention
By SIMON MUNTEMBA TROUBLE is brewing in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Chishimba Kambwili led faction prepares to hold a convention today which
the Joseph Akafumba group is determined to stop through court action. The Kambwili-led NDC group has vowed that it will today hold its national convention to elect its leaders despite threats of a
court injunction from the other faction. The Akafumba faction has however, vowed to obtain an injunction to stop the Kambwili group from going ahead with the convention.

WHY THE SILENCE? WHY has the top brass in the United Party for National Development (UPND) remained quiet over the shooting incident in Mkushi involving supporters of rival candidates seeking adoption as parliamentary candidates? We find this very strange when the UPND is notorious for raising complaints at the slightest provocation from their rivals. It is unacceptable for the UPND to remain quiet over an incident in which one of its members was shot and wounded – by someone supporting a rival candidate. In this incident which happened during the week, Mr Pathias Kunda was shot and wounded in the leg in an ambush by UPND cadres from a rival camp. Central Province Police Commissioner Chola Katanga had confirmed that the police received a report of a suspected shooting incident involving Mr Kunda but could not verify as the victim was not cooperative. We would have expected the UPND president Mr Hakainde Hichilema to show leadership and be the first to condemn such criminal behaviour that is a threat to the country’s democracy. What would have happened had Mr Kunda died from the shooting? When political cadres across the political divide are allowed to use guns to frighten their opponents, then there is everything wrong with their leaders. But even though the UPND bigwigs are quiet, we implore the police not to treat this shooting incident as an internal wrangle within the opposition party. This was behaviour that showed careless use of a gun in public and threatened peace and security. And such criminal acts cannot be regarded as internal feuds. Even in a family, when one side resorts to the use of a firearm, such action attracts police action. This is the more reason why police must investigate and get to the bottom of the incident. While we welcome the positive response of Zambians belonging to the various political parties wishing to be adopted as parliamentary candidates in particular, we do not accept that there should be violence in the processes. If anything, the adoption process in the individual parties should be free of violence because all the prospective candidates should have similar core values espoused by their party. We shudder to imagine what would happen when such violent candidates are adopted and now have to face a “real enemy” who does not belong to their camp. We agree with the Evangelical Youth Alliance which has warned that the chilling events of violence within the UPND are scary and should be stopped because this could spill to the general elections due in August. The executive director, Reverend Moses Lungu warned that police should nip this in the bud because it has potential to spread to other parts of the country. Zambians are united in their resolve to have peaceful elections and won’t entertain anyone trying to cause mayhem. President Edgar Lungu has gone out of his way to commit the government’s determination to ensure that there is peace before, during and after the August 12 general elections. We therefore demand that other political leaders join President Lungu and commit their organisations to peaceful conduct during this electoral period. Violence, as they ought to know, will rob Zambians of their constitutional right to pick leaders of their choice in a peaceful manner for they will stay away from the polling booths. Obviously, this is not what they would want to happen.
THE SPECTRE OF CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA STILL HAUNTS ZAMBIAN ELECTIONS
By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE
F
OUR months before the eagerly awaited polls on August 12 that will possibly elect the new president, one major issue that has strongly emerged, and which will have a big impact on the elections, is that of the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s new biometric-enabled voters register. This has been described by the ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Mr Patrick Nshindano as the most complete and biometrically secure in Zambia’s history. In explaining that the ECZ applied equity in the electoral services’ administration, he also revealed that a technical committee to look at modalities of holding the 2021 general elections amid the Covid-19 pandemic has been constituted. As expected, the fear of again losing the upcoming elections forced the UPND president, Mr Hakainde Hichilema to write letters of complaint to the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Mr Hichilema expressied his concerns over the 2021 comparatively low voter registration turnout in his party’s strongholds whilst PF recorded marginal increase in its strongholds as shown in the statistical chart. The UPND has seemingly been caught off guard and its support base in Southern, North-Western and Western provinces is unfavourably shaky because its lawmakers vehemently fought against the Constitutional Amendment Bill 10 inside and outside Parliament for their own political survival to the detriment of the 2021 voters’ mobilisation and registration processes. Surely, the opposition party is in turmoil. UPND’s political melodrama – part tragedy and part farce – has served up the latest in a line of bizarre plot twists. The UPND bigwigs should not be surprised if PF again emerges victorious in the forthcoming elections because they were so focused on their own individual selfish agendas. For observers enjoying the luxury of hindsight, the warning signs had been there. A collection of seemingly unconnected UPND-driven events and activities – UPND

officials’ arrest and arraignment for printing fake NRCs purportedly for underage first-time voters and displaying them on TV, Cambridge Analytica’s engagement, acquisition and use of personal Facebook data to influence voters ahead of Zambia’s 2016 elections, overwhelming 72 percent voter-turnout in Southern Province mostly of underage and ghost voters in 2016, refusal to have the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Bill enacted into law, resistance to have the obsolete voters register replaced by the biometric-featured most up-todate version, failure to repeat 2016 mobilisation effort of voters’ registration, failure to redeploy 2016 warlord-styled underage recruitment techniques for would-be first-time voters, UPND bigwigs’ defections to PF, busy sharing positions in a yet-to-be-formed government – can now be seen as symptoms and causes that have left the UPND haemorrhaging and anaemic to effectively compete in the upcoming elections. The Cambridge Analytica’s involvement in Zambian politics in 2016 should have acted as an alarm bell for the ruling party officials but did not. Instead there followed a sense of post-election denial and a series of allegations of electoral malpractices championed by the UPND perennial presidential election losing candidate. A pantomime-like blame game between the PF and UPND bigwigs ensued with
election-rigging accusations and counter-accusations being made by either side. The PF bigwigs could have figured a way out long before UPND’s criticism of the new

voter’s register developed to its current level by conceding that 2016 presidential, parliamentary and local government elections were rigged by Cambridge Analytica through its deployed third-party persuasion techniques – the view of most observers – and ethnocentric narratives aimed at balkanising Zambia’s Southern, North-Western and West-
ern provinces into ethnic blocs. Instead they repeatedly gave the SADC and AU’s seal of free-and-fair elections approval. Perhaps, they did not want to break ranks by exposing one of their own political opponent’s wrongdoings to the outside world and risk compromising the country’s reputation as a beacon of peace and security in Africa. But another reason that was increasingly plausible – they may have feared opening the doors to an unpredictable and disgraced Cambridge Analytica that could have found an echo in their own strongholds in Zambia’s remaining seven provinces. Does this begin to sound familiar? Besides, there has been a growing public awareness which links Mr Hichilema to the new Cambridge Analytica owner, Ahmad Al-Khatib, regarding a new contract that has reportedly been secured to help the UPND win the 2021 elections with massive social media campaigns, cyberspace data manipulation and increased propaganda against the PF government at a monthly fee of US$225, 000 for 15 months beginning from March, 2020. The defunct Cambridge Analytica has re-emerged with an Egyptian as its sole investor and has its concentrated-focus on the Middle East and Africa. The new company, Auspex International, has kept former Cambridge Analytica director Mark Turnbull at the helm. With this knowledge and under public scrutiny the UPND leader has had to change tactics, thus ostensibly eschewing his party’s questionable past by shifting the blame onto the country’s new biometric-enabled voters’ register by seeking the international community’s intervention. His request for SADC and AU’s intervention is a symptom of UPND’s inability to freely-and-fairly compete in past and future elections. Most observers dismissed Mr Hichilema’s formal letters of complaint to the international community as letters full of hot air. But sometimes hot air is just what is needed when he wants the Cambridge Analytica’s spectre that still haunts Zambian elections scuttled and hushed up to globally appear innocent of any electoral wrongdoing at least for now.

KAMBWILI WARNED From Page 1 “Yes, I can confirm with you that we shall be having our party national convention tomorrow (today) on the Copperbelt,” Ms Imboela said. Dr Mbulo also announced yesterday that the party will be holding its national convention today, Sunday. Dr Mbulo said the convention will start at 08:30 hours and will be attended by party leaders from all over the country. He said it will also have provincial centres where some provincial and district leaders who form the Electoral College will be stationed. The convention will, he said, among other things, elect its national leaders, as well as confirm or amend the constitution and party manifesto where needed. He announced that all was set for the convention and that the provincial centres will be connected to the main centre on the Copperbelt where the convention will take place. “We are very happy with the current state of affairs and we urge all our delegates to be on time for this event. For further clarifications, all delegates and other district and provincial leaders should call their district chairpersons, and all members of the central committee should
call me,” Dr Mbulo said. But the Akafumba faction said it would be illegal for Mr Kambwili and his team to hold a national conference. Mr Akafumba said yesterday that the Ndola High Court on Friday granted them an injunction against Mr Kambwili from masquerading as NDC president and performing any party function. “Yesterday (Friday) afternoon the Ndola High Court granted leave to commence contempt proceedings against Chishimba Kambwili, Saboi Imboela, Paul Mbulo and Ackson Kaonga to show cause why they should not be sent to prison for contempt of court. “The court process has been duly served on Kambwili's lawyers, however, we have been reliably informed by his members of central committee who are in fact in our team that Kambwili this afternoon withdrew K150, 000 and has sent K15, 000 to each province to ferry people for a convention in Kitwe on Saturday at Moba Hotel. NDC vice-president Edward Mumbi also charged that national convention that the Kambwili led NDC was going to hold is illegal. Mr Mumbi warned Mr Kambwili against holding a convention because that will be tantamount to contempt of the court.

MINES FACE GOVT’S WRATH
..as it acts on 50p.c. policy on fuel contracts By NOEL IYOMBWA GOVERNMENT has written to the Petroleum Transporters Association of Zambia (PTAZ) to pinpoint large scale mining companies that are not using local transporters to supply 50 percent of their allocated fuel quantities so that action can be taken. In a letter dated April 8, 2021, Mines Permanent Secretary Barnaby Mulenga said the information would enable Government to ensure that the directive of empowering local transporters was enforced. “As Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, we
would like you to identify and share with us information of all large scale mining companies that are not using Zambian transporters to transport 50 percent of their allocated fuel quantities. “This information will enable us to ensure that the Presidential directive of empowering local transporters is adhered to,” the letter reads in part. And Zambia Union of Tanker Drivers vice president, Vincent Shamilimo, said the association was happy that Government was implementing the policy. Mr Shamilimo said the tanker drivers were happy
By BUUMBA CHIMBULU GOVERNMENT has issued a commencement order to bring into effect the Public Procurement Act of 2020 aimed at providing a more efficient, effective, transparent and accountable public procurement system in Zambia. The Act which has repealed and replaced the Public Procurement Act No. 12 of 2008 was signed on Friday last week by Finance Minister, Bwalya Ng’andu.
Secretary to the Treasury, Fredson Yamba, said Ministry of Finance was confident that this Act would ensure that Government makes savings on the procurement function - which accounted for over 70 percent of discretionary government expenditure (less debt and personal emoluments. He expressed worry that many people don’t take the disease very seriously despite other losing their beloved ones and called for the change in attitude. He said it is imperative that there is more sensitisation so that local people can take this seriously. He appealed to churches to preach about the Covid-19 preventive measures to stop the spread of the vice in the communities. The pastor also said Kanyama constituency has many challenges which should be looked in by social partners such as communities markets, police posts and recreations centres for children to con-
that Government was taking their plight seriously. “Now all our trucks are busy and stable fuel supply is assured,” he said. The Zambian Tanker drivers were recently on a go-slow which led to fuel shortages across the country because Oil Marketing Companies shunned doing business with them in preference for foreign transporters. The aggrieved drivers were demanding their 50 percent stake in fuel supply contracts which Oil Marketing Companies were giving to foreign companies. The drivers also explained that most of them had lost
employment because tanker owners had parked their trucks due to lack of business.

Chinese K100, 000 PPEs church donation cheers Kanyama pastors A CONSORTIUM of churches has commended the Chinese community for donating personal protective equipment (PPEs) worth K100, 000 to aid in the fight against Covid-19. Pastor Rabson Daka, speaking on behalf of more than 30 churches commended the Chinese Associaion in Zambia for their generosity for the donation of tools towards the fight against Covid-19 in Lusaka’s Kanyama constituency. Pastor Daka also hailed the Patriotic Front chairman for Bayuni branch, Mr Chris Changwereza for spearheading the donation for churches where most members have no access to PPEs like masks or hand washing soap. The pastor said most churches have been adversely affected by the Covid-19 because members have lost jobs while others have lost lives to the pandemic. And Prophet Festus Daka of the Jesus Faith Wonders Ministries for all Nations, called on other entities in the area to emulate the Chinese community that have come to help the Kanyama churches. “Covid-19 has had a devastating impact in our communities and many people are struggling to find means to survive. And some cannot even afford a mask. This donation is therefore a welcome relief and we are looking forward to more

verge in the communities instead of engaging in crime. He appealed to the Chinese to continue with the spirit of helping local communities. And Chinese Association in Zambia Executive Vice President Dr Luan Chunmin, said the association was established to find a way of helping local people in the areas where they operate. Happy to have been contacted to provide the equipment in church to help the people. Kanyama is one of the biggest constituencies and the Chinese were happy to respond to the call for held. He said the association was happy to provide masks, had washing soap and hand sanitisers to help the churches congregate freely in this covid peri-
od. It is for this reasons that the association has decided to put up teso8rced to provide sanitised masks “The donation is just one of many donation which the association has made to the people of Zambia,” he said. And in a vote of thanks, PF Kanyama constituency candidate Chris Changwareza observed that the fight against Covid-19 is the responsibility of everyone and not government alone. He said it was gratifying that the Chinese responded promptly to the call for help from the church. Other Chinese officials who attended the ceremony included Vice President Mr Zhang Yongqiang, and Secretary Mr Shao Qian.
ers, small and medium sized enterprises, and enterprises owned by persons with disabilities, youths or women. "The new Act is a major milestone in addressing gaps and weaknesses in dealing with emerging public procurement related issues thereby providing for a more efficient, effective, transparent and accountable public procurement system in the country," he said. Mr Yamba explained that among the key issues that
the new Act had addressed included enhanced participation of citizens in public procurement and price benchmarking through the publication of quarterly market prices. He said others included a requirement to conduct price reasonableness analysis by procuring entities, mandatory usage of the electronic government procurement system, and capping of contract variations to a maximum of 25 percent of the original contract price.
Introduce performancebased management at National Assembly - Miti SECRETARY to Cabinet Simon Miti has urged the National Assembly Management (NAM) to emulate the Executive’s initiative by introducing performance-based management contracts to enhance quality service delivery. Dr Miti explained that the National Assembly should take a leaf from the Executive that has introduced performance management-based contracts at Permanent Secretary level and being cascaded to directors’ levels. He also underscored that performance management contracts are key in the evaluation of staff for either promotions or demotions. “The Public Service is crucial in the social and economic development of the country, hence the need for all civil servants to uphold professionalism,” he said. Dr Miti made the remarks when he officiated at the senior staff workshop on ethics in the public service organised by the National Assembly held at Bonanza Resort and Hotel
in Chongwe. “I urge you all to study and internalise the provision of the code of ethics unlike being a passive reader or not reading at all. As such public servants going against the public service provisions should be disciplined in line with the provisions,” he stressed. Dr Miti emphasised that public service workers should execute their duties diligently in line with the code of ethics while implementing all the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. And Clerk of the National Assembly Cecilia Mbewe said the workshop is targeting the heads of department as they are key in the implementation of the code of ethics. Ms Mbewe stated that the workshop will enable parliament staff to refrain from spreading grapevine information and peddling rumours. She said the workshop will promote the dissemination of verified information and promotion of non-partisanship as they work. – ZANIS.

IMPORTED FISH ‘EATS’ LOCAL FISH POPULATION By KETRA KALUNGA
F
ISH in the Zambezi River faces extinction threat from the Chinese imported Red Clay fish. The predatory Red Clay fish is believed to have been imported by the Chinese who were engaged to construct the Mongu-Kalabo bridge which invaded the Zambezi River after the dams in which they were kept burst due to floods. And a civil society organisation, Action Governance Forum (AGF) is concerned with the reduction of the fish population in the river as a
result of the Red Clay fish which feeds on the local species. AGF executive director Justine Mushoke says there is agent need for the gov-
ernment to intervene and protect the vulnerable indigenous species fish from the Red Clay fish before it is extinct. Mr. Mushoke said the ministry of Fisheries and Livestock should consider putting in place deliberate measures to prevent the already depleting fish population in the river from extinction. He said in an interview that the already reduced fish population in the Zambezi River would deplete further if the Red Clay fish was not eliminated or its fast-growing population reduced on
time. Mr. Mushoke said the population of the local fish in the Zambezi River has reduced because the Red Clay fish which reproduces at a faster rate than the indigenous species was feeding on it hence the need for quick intervention. “We have observed from the project that we are doing as AGF called Advocacy in Sustainability Management for communities in the flood plains along the Zambezi that the red clay fish is a danger to the local fish because it is eating the local fish,” he said.
HH practising tribal politics - Nakachinda By PETER SICHALI UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has contributed to tribal politics the country is experiencing today, Operation Save MMD leader Raphael Nakachinda has said. Mr Nakachinda said that Mr Hichilema has contributed to toxic tribal politics since ascendancy to the helm of the party. He said Mr Hichilema's desire to rule the country was driven by a personal agenda. "I don't agree with Mr Hichilema's kind of politics because
he has contributed a lot in terms of toxicity of politics in terms ethnicity,” Mr Nakachinda said. He said he does not agree with Mr Hichilema's style of politics of ethnicity consideration which have been on the rise since he ascended to the UPND presidency. "I don't not agree with the politics of Mr Hichilema ethnicity which has contributed to toxicity of politics unlike it was before," Mr Nakachinda said. He said his desire to form Government was centred on selfish interests.
"Having a privilege to discuss with foreign entities, imperialist outfit have an interest in our mining houses in the country and a number of things," he said. Mr Nakachinda said he had facts that Mr Hichilema was an element of state capture and an outfit of imperialist. He said he could not support him even if they came from the same village for the mere fact that he was a sell-out and added that the PF would win the 2021 general elections in the first round.

Dr Chanda said 496 people have been vaccinated in Lusaka in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total of vaccinated people to 706 of which 26 percent are healthcare workers. He said he was happy with the level of interest of the public to get vaccinated further stating that the acquisition and
deployment of more vaccines is in the process to ensure all eligible people get vaccinated. Dr Chanda said the targeted population under the vaccines available include Healthcare workers and other frontline workers performing core societal functions such as teachers, journalists, security, immigration and the defence as well the elderly with underlying conditions.

By SILUMESI MALUMO GOVERNMENT has encouraged farmers to grow lucrative crops such as pasture crops. Fisheries and Livestock Minister Professor Nkandu Luo says farmers who would be involved in growing pasture crops would be able to make enough money by selling to farmers rearing livestock to be used as feed. She says it was important that farmers do not only concentrate on maize growing because crops like pasture crops would make them wealthy. Speaking when she empowered 22 cooperatives in Mwinilunga, the minister said farmers involved in rearing livestock would be able to buy pasture crops at a good price. Meanwhile the minister warned cooperatives benefiting from livestock empowerment against abuse of tax payer's money. Prof Luo said the money being used to buy livestock being given to them was
from the tax payer's money, therefore, it was important that the livestock was used for its intended purpose. She said Government would not allow cooperatives to sell them. "I don’t want also to see that these chickens are put in the pot. I need this livestock to bring you more income," she said.

WOMAN BEGS COURT TO ‘FORCE’ HUSBAND TO HAVE SEX WITH HER
W
HAT do you do when you’re married and your partner doesn’t want to have sex anymore?
Such is the dilemma being faced by a 50-year-old woman from Ntabazinduna, Matabeleland North province who sued her 54-yearold husband for neglecting his “marital duties” by refusing to have sex with her. Peggy Nkomo from Mabutweni Line, claimed her husband of more than three decades, Morgan Mhlanga, has not initiated sex once in at least six years. The couple is sleeping in separate bedrooms. In her application for a protection order at the Bulawayo Civil Court, she claimed her
husband was not only abusive, but was also at fault for “incapacity to meet his duties as the father of the house”. She, however, caused a raucous in court when she passionately begged the presiding magistrate Nkosinomusa Ncube to “force” her husband to come back to their matrimonial bedroom, a plea she made while indicating that she had stayed for so long without her husband’s intimacy. “Morgan Mhlanga is my husband. He has been abusive since we started staying together until the time he moved out of our matrimonial bedroom and that was six years ago. He has been hitting me whenever he feels like he wants to beat me. He is now staying in a separate bedroom and
does not talk to me anymore despite the fact that we are staying in the same house. He also does not allow me to use some of the matrimonial property and is now cooking on his own,” complained Nkomo. She said her husband was also harassing their children and grandchildren. In response Mhlanga defended his actions of slapping his wife with sex sanctions saying she was “talkative”. “I moved out of the bedroom to avoid confrontation because she talks a lot. It’s not true that I am harassing her and the children. I’m so close to my children and grandchildren to an extent that they even call me bhudas (brother). I am surprised why she is saying I’m abusing her since it’s
almost six years without talking to her,” responded Mhlanga. His response impelled the magistrate to ask Nkomo: “Why are you saying the respondent (her husband) is harassing you when he doesn’t talk to you? What do you mean? “It’s true that we are not on talking terms since 2016 because when he moved out of the matrimonial bedroom, he took all the blankets. My request now is that I want him back to the bedroom because I don’t have a man. Where am I going to get another husband? What pains me is that when he married me, I was 19 years old and he is now refusing to sleep with me despite the fact that I still need a man,” Nkomo passionately pleaded while throwing her hands in the air. - BMETRO
Woman rips hubby’s scrotum IN a shocking incident of domestic violence, a Bulawayo woman allegedly ‘severed’ her estranged husband’s scrotum and penis with her nails apparently in anger after she was reportedly served with a divorce token.
Beauty Manhenhe tore Luckson Gopo’s testicles during a divorce-fuelled row at their house in Nkulumane 5 suburb. Gopo, who was left in ‘excruciating pain’ after the attack on his genitals, was reportedly rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he was treated for the shocking injury. This was heard at the Bulawayo Civil Court, where Gopo was seeking a protection order against Manhenhe saying she was always threatening him with violence. So chilling are the threats that Gopo claimed his estranged wife was also threatening to scald him with boiling water or cooking oil. “Beauty Manhenhe is my ex-wife. We divorced on 25
March 2021, and I left her at her parents’ house in Gweru on the understanding that she would come back with her aunt to collect her belongings. She, however, followed me and she doesn’t want me to leave her. She is disturbing my peace as she is always threatening me with violence and I took those threats seriously. “I moved out of the house to go and stay at my brother’s place after she attacked me on my privates. Since she always shows violent behaviour towards me, I pray for this court to grant me a protection order against her so
that I may live a peaceful life free from any harassment as she has also promised to scald me with hot water or cooking oil on several occasions,” said Gopo while tendering a medical report which shows that he sustained severe lacerations on his scrotum and penis, the injuries suspected to have been inflicted by sharp nails. He further said Manhenhe should also be banned from going to his workplace. In her response Manhenhe, however, said she was still married to Gopo. “He is still my husband because I still do everything
for him. We didn’t divorce. We are just fighting and he once phoned my aunt that she comes and settle our disputes. It is also not true that I’m threatening him. The day he suffered those injuries we fought and I also sustained injuries on the head,” responded Manhenhe. In coming up with a ruling, the presiding magistrate Nkosinomusa Ncube took into consideration the fact that the parties’ marriage was on the brink of collapse. “The parties are definitely in a bad patch showing that they are not in good relations. Applicant claims they have divorced, respondent says they have not. They have both tendered evidence showing they sustained injuries. “Since the court is not satisfied on the divorce of the parties, I will not give an order on the eviction of either parties from their matrimonial home. A reciprocal order is hereby granted and both parties are ordered not to assault or utter threats of violence at each other,” ruled the magistrate. BMETRO
Men who used monkeys to steal cash arrested in India
TWO men who roamed the Indian capital using monkeys to rob unsuspecting victims have been arrested, New Delhi police said Saturday.
The pair were apprehended after one victim complained to officers that three men carrying monkeys had surrounded and robbed him of 6,000 rupees ($80), a local police official told AFP. Authorities across India have been grappling with the menace posed by monkeys in Delhi and other populated
cities, where they often enter homes in search of food. But it is illegal for Indians to capture them under a 1972 law. “When the victim was sitting in an autorickshaw, the men also entered (the vehicle) and asked one monkey to sit on the front seat and another at the back,” the official said. “They took the money the lawyer had in his wallet and fled with the monkeys.” Police suspected the gang were behind other similar
thefts and officers set up a dedicated team to track down the culprits, who were arrested Thursday at a bus stop along with their animal accomplices. The third thief is still at large while the monkeys have been sent to an animal rescue centre. Monkeys are often trained as street performers in India and incidences of the hairy simians attacking residents are not uncommon. Last year a troop of monkeys attacked a medical official and snatched blood
samples of patients who had tested positive for coronavirus in Meerut city in northern India. AFP
Naked woman appears in Parliament zoom meeting, shocking MPs NATIONAL Assembly committee on co-operative governance and traditional affairs chairperson Faith Muthambi has expressed outrage at video footage of a naked woman appearing behind a member of the National House of Traditional Leaders (NHTL), who was participating in a virtual committee meeting on Tuesday night. The video has since gone viral on social media. As the member addresses the committee, a naked woman can be seen walking in the room towards the camera, shocking MPs. After being reprimanded by Muthambi, he said: I am very sorry chair. I was focusing on the camera and did not see there was a person behind me.” The meeting was an engagement between the committee
and the NHTL on, among other things, initiation, particularly on the death of initiates in initiation schools. Muthambi has distanced the committee from this footage, saying: “The naked woman was not part of the meeting. “She was in the same room where the participant in the meeting was. “We regret and condemn the incident in the strongest terms.” Muthambi has urged participants in a virtual meeting to ensure that their computer screens show acceptable backgrounds behind each participant in the meeting. “It is regrettable that this kind of footage, which is embarrassing the committee, happens for the second time in meetings between the committee and the NHTL. “I am going to engage with the leadership of the NHTL,” she said Muthambi. During an interview with Bill Maher, she said: "You know when they say white privilege? You know, right there with Harry. Right there. He is the poster boy. So you know, he sits there and says 'daddy cut him off and he's not on the wages anymore' and he was boohooing about it. "You can't feel empathy for that. ORLD Pangolin Day falls on the third Saturday of February each year. In view of the devastation caused by Covid-19, which is reported to have spread through abuse of pangolins by humans in China, this year’s commemoration, the TENTH annual celebration (which happened yesterday), gives us the opportunity to consider how threats that result from the improper handling of pangolins far outweigh their supposed mythical benefits, and how we can make better choices in future to avoid pandemics.
To begin with, there are eight species of pangolins, four are found in Asia while the other four are found in Africa. All species face declining populations because of illegal trade, which has seen Asian pangolins being listed as critically endangered and African pangolins listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Last year pangolins were infamously reported as the animal that potentially passed the SARS-CoV-2, the novel virus that causes COVID-19, to humans. Chinese scientists arrived at this conclusion due to the presence of SARS-CoV-2-related viruses in Malayan pangolins. Pangolins are being poached to near extinction due to a high demand for their scales, meat and other body parts in China and Vietnam, where many people falsely believe that pangolin scales can be used to cure various diseases. This myth has been debunked by science, since pangolin scales are made of keratin, the same protein found in human nails and hair. Therefore, if pangolin scales have power to cure diseases, biting your fingernails should be just as potent. Moreover, the everincreasing number of people who are being infected with Covid-19 and those who are succumbing to it shows that the threats associated with the improper handling of wildlife are very real and often unforgiving. So far, COVID-19 has killed more than 2.4 million people and infected more than 110 million people in every part of the world.
REFLECTIONS FOR WORLD PANGOLIN DAY Pangolin meat is also in high demand in Asia, where it is considered a delicacy. This is not unlike the high demand for illegal bushmeat here in Zambia. There have been many pandemics that are a direct result of consuming illegal wildlife meat, which scientists have long warned is dangerous, as it often carries unknown diseases. While previous warnings have somewhat fallen on deaf ears, we can’t afford to ignore the warning signaled by Covid-19, because if we don’t change how we interact with wildlife, especially regarding consumption of illegal bushmeat, worse pandemics are certainly coming. The high demand for pangolins is also motivated by economic reasons. Some Zambians have unfortunately been encouraged to engage in the illegal poaching and trafficking of pangolins, risking their freedom and aiding in robbing the country of its wildlife resource. While poaching may be lucrative for a small number of criminals, when things fall apart, it’s the entire world that pays for it. For instance, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates the Covid-19 pandemic will cost the global economy $28 trillion in lost output by 2025. Further, the World Bank
estimates 150 million people could be pushed into extreme poverty by 2021. Another very real threat associated with poaching and trafficking pangolins is the possibility of being jailed and separated from one’s family for a very long time. Under the Zambia Wildlife Act No.14 of 2015, illegal possession of pangolins or their scales is punishable with a minimum prison sentence of five years without the option of paying a fine. So, for Zambians who think they can make quick money by poaching pangolins, the only payment they will receive is prison time. As we celebrate pangolins, one of the most unique creatures on the planet, there are several things we need to keep in mind. Pangolins belong in the wild, their natural habitat. We can restore the delicate balance between humans and nature by being mindful of the fact that how we interact with pangolins and other wildlife has serious implications on our health and on the health of the planet. You can protect pangolins by reporting any suspicious wildlife or pangolin activities to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife. Write to: info@wildlifecrimeprevention.org

CHALI MULALAMI COOKING SOMETHING By TERENCE MISELO
R
ENOWNED music producer and one of the pioneers of modern day Zambian music Chali Mulalami fondly called Chali Bravo of the Sling Beats( Chacine) fame is working on a new album for 2021. According to Chali, the album will be called ‘ Renaisance’. The Daily Nation caught up with him to understand this development.
WHY RENAISANCE? I chose to name the project “One Drum II” because there was a project before simply called One Drum. This particular album is One Drum II with a subtitle “Renaissance” because I have recently had a renewed interest in creating and promoting music. In fact there’s a subsidiary company that’s going to handle all things music under the old Sling Beats Limited umbrella called Sling Beats Renaissance. So it all ties together. It’s a new beginning. WHAT’S ON THIS PROJECT? That’s one of the hardest ques-
tions to answer because it’s really a mixture of sounds that is hard to categorize. The project has hip hop, RnB, Rock, Soul, Kalindula and a lot of Jazz influences. It’s deep and also playful. Both local languages and English are featured. Songs vary between fast and mid temple. The fans might be better placed to categorize it. WE UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE RECONNECTED WITH SOME OF THE ARTISTES YOU STARTED WITH LIKE K’MILLIAN. TELL US MORE. K’millian and Chisenga Katongo (formerly known as Cri$i$) are the most experienced artistes featured on the album. It was a chance feature and I was happy to reconnect with my generation for old times’ sakes. The rest are mainly newer acts ranging from well known artistes and very new artistes that will hopefully create a bigger fan base for themselves through this project. AND WHAT’S YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH NEW ARTISTES? It was great working with some
new artistes who in some cases knew my name and Sling Beats but didn’t really know about my previous works and influence. But that’s also a great way to make music because we created something new and special together. GIVE US THE DETAILS ABOUT WHAT THE ALBUM CONTAINS. Renaissance comprises 20 tracks. Some of the pieces on the list are interludes performed by a poet called Destro. It’s very guitar driven with some live violin and saxophone laced through out the project. The special thing I point out is that the album begins but after that it never ends. To find my meaning to that, you need to listen to it without interruption. WHEN DO WE EXPECT THE ALBUM? The album will be available on 1st May on our local online distributor Mvesesani as well over 69 digital stores across the world courtesy of Rockstar/Sony Music Africa via tradition online purchases and in some cases even mobile money.

HOW LONG SHALL WE MOURN?
T
ODAY is exactly 365 days since April 18, 2020. It is also exactly 365 days since Zambia recorded its third case of Covid-19 related death and still today is exactly 365 days since I certified my first Covid-19 related death. It is one year today that she has been gone and yes a year on that I had thought no one else would go after her or even like her. I strongly believed that as she was my first mortality, she could as well have been the last. But no one year on, we still mourn, shedding almost the same tear in almost the same way and for almost the exact same reason irrespective of the season. Just last week on April 15 at 01:10 hours we lost another very precious soul to Covid-19 bringing the total of Covid-19 related deaths in Zambia to 1, 233 . More than 365 days of endless tears and still wailing but for how long shall we mourn? Yes, it is true there are some people who take pleasure in taking other peoples’ lives without remorse like serial killers. For instance like the self-confessed 27-year-old serial killer of Kitwe who has been linked to 11 murders so far but seems the count will increase.
Myanmar etc. In as much as these tragedies are done by fellow human beings who cause so much pain to the loved ones of the victims, the majority of people are good people, they want to live and want others to live too. Honestly, no loved one would love to see someone they love die because even people like Nazi leader Adolph Hitler never wanted their loved ones to die despite him killing so many Jews at the same time. 23:40 APRIL 18TH 2020 I don’t know why she had taken the poison but she said it was something to do
condition worsened, she fought but couldn’t fight no more. With Dr Sibanda and the team especially Sister Theresa we did all we could to save her. She pulled through the night but worsened still. I remember we didn’t sleep almost the whole 24 hours she was with us. The final attempt to save her was made but the odds were against her and at 23:40 on April 18, 2020, we certified her dead. She was only aged 19. Zambia recorded its first death on April 2, 2020, the second one on April 10, 2020 and hers was the third .And to date so many have added to the list.

The oxygen demands went up while his health went down. The wife flew in to be with him with the hope of flying back home with him. He would speak to the others on phone assuring them he was going back.
Elsewhere there is gun violence, somewhere still there is mass murder like recently in Mozambique by ISIS, there are senseless deaths in
with some family affairs. She had a young child and didn’t really want to leave her motherless. Seeing that they couldn’t handle the case in Chongwe they sent her to Chilenje. She was stabilised and was said to have been doing well but then 16 days into the admission, her fever went up, she had difficulties breathing and was swabbed for Covid-19. The results came out positive, she was sent to Levy on April 17, 2020 were we received her and admitted her. Looking at her it was obvious she was sick, the temperature was high and so was her breathing rate. We put her on oxygen but her
HE NEVER MADE IT BACK HOME He had just come for a visit from the diaspora where he was living. He had bade farewell to his children, wife and the Zambian community in the United States of which he was a pillar. To some, I am sure he had promised to take some good traditional dishes like the vinkubalas. l am told he was full of life as he was full of cheer, everyone said he was a good and kind man. Indeed, he had a constant humble smile which he maintained throughout. He had come as an early Christmas present to the family in Zambia, he joined them in the farms, doing
some things he had not done in years even as simple as tending to animals. Time had come for him to go back, the tickets were secured, the presents for those that side prepared and parked but in the process of
preparing for his travel certificate he tested positive for Covid -19. He started with mild symptoms, things were not that really bad then, but afterwards the symptoms started worsening. He now needed oxygen, he came we admitted him, put him on minimal oxygen gave him what else we could but still the fight intensified. The oxygen demands went up while his health went down. The wife flew in to be with him with the hope of flying back home with him. He would speak to the others on phone assuring them he was going back. And going back he did, just not where everyone else hoped he would go, he went
to where he had come from before entering into this world, where he was before he was called Kelvin and where all of us are going to go someday, it is just a matter of time. He was put to rest yesterday, April 17, 2021. All those that he had left back home are still in shock, including myself and it will take long to have a closure but for others like Mercy they may never will. She really expected “daddy” to come back home. She couldn’t make it for his funeral, you can imagine what grief she must be experiencing. To Dr Brian Mushimba and the family at large, I wish my deepest condolences. And may the angels help Kelvin to fly as he soars to world unknown.
Globally with the potential of wiping out even more millions. For how long shall we not care ,how long shall we not mask up, how long shall we not observe hand hygiene, how long shall we not take responsibility how we socialise?. Yes we are all tired of Covid-19 but we still have to fight on, but just how long the fight I don’t know but what I know, how long is very much up to us . How long shall we mourn? I asked, as I bent my steps the watchman spake: “The long, dark night is almost gone, The morning soon will break. Then weep no more…” I hope the day breaks soon before Covid claims another life. Until then aluta continua, the struggle continues, Please…
Indeed, for how long shall we mourn? How long shall we put our family members and friends six feet under? For how long shall we let something that can be prevented claim so many lives, almost three million now.

Appreciating hard work Dear Editor,
UPND MUST HAND OVER UNRULY SUPPORTERS TO POLICE Dear Editor, THE processes culminating into the UPND intra party selection process has been marred with well documented widespread violence, allegations of corruption and hate specch among themselves. It is surprising that critical institutions of Government such as Human Rights Commission, the Church and the civil society have all paid willful blindness to the bloody spilling process. We need the collective voice from the various stakeholders as it has been in the past. It is also shocking that even Mr Hakainde Hichi-
lema and members of his inner circle have not shown leadership to condemn this inhuman behaviour. This is their vivid opportunity to redefine their reputation which has a chaotic nature and history. It is not a secret that the principal perpetrators of violence among the UPND ranks are well known to the party leadership. Moreover Zambia is a Christian and democratic nation which has established traditions on how to implement electoral processes. As a political party which claim to be a law abiding organisation, UPND should take a proactive role and file
a criminal complaint against unruly cadres and where possible hand them over to the police for action. As regards the police command, we expect them to guide the political stakeholders regarding the potential criminal liability which may arise in intra party elections. It is not acceptable for the dead silence on the violence that has been awash on social media. The police have assured that they will be equal to the task ahead of the elections and we challenge them to show their ability by restoring intra party order. It is a grave disappointment for a political party aspiring to rule shield the
perpetrators of political violence. President Lungu has consistently denounced violence and called on relevant authorities to act and we urge Mr Hichilema to emulate him by surrendering unruly cadres to the police. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI, Lusaka.

WHEN he wanted to become our deputy mayor in 2016, I was among the counclilors who rejected his aspirations and instead we supported a woman but when we started sitting for our civic centre deliberations, he put aside the rejection and proved to be the backbone of the Lusaka City Council (LCC) board as his 2011 to 2016 experience as councillor plus his excellent understanding of council issues made him our source of knowledge. I was in the forefront in rejecting his deputy mayoral aspirations but when he was appointed as a member of the Public Health Committee, which I chaired from 2016 to 2018, he was my advisor and during one of our committee’s tours I openly apologised to him saying “I rejected you because some people broadcasted your weaknesses and whispered your strengths but today I have seen for myself that you are our backbone at civic centre.” Fast forward the mid term election of the deputy
mayor came and I was in the forefront, this time to make sure that he becomes our deputy mayor as I was convinced that he was the right man for the job and many councillors will testify that he has performed beyond our expectations. He is simply one of the councillors who are too qualified to continue being at Civic Centre no wonder his announcement to aspire for the Mandevu parliamentary seat did not come as a surprise to us. He has just proved to us that indeed there are no permanent enemies in politics no wonder even yesterday he interacted so well with the people he is competing with for the Mandevu parliamentary seat and these include his fellow councillors Joseph Tamba (Raphael Chota Ward, Chipata compound) and Douglas Tembo (Mulungushi Ward, Olympia township). Thank you for the leadership my deputy mayor Christopher Shakafuswa, aka Dangote, councillor for Mpulungu Ward, Kabanana, Lusaka. PATRICK S. MWAMBA.
A dream turns into reality! Dear Editor, AS part of our continued development agenda in Chipangali, we have funded the construction of the first ever secondary school in Chief Kapatamoyo The construction of the secondary classroom blocks has already started and comes after calls from Chief Kapatamoyo and the community who said the chiefdom has never had a secondary school before. We remain committed and we will never turn our backs from the people of Chipangali. The intervention by the Andrew Zindhlu Lubusha Foundation to
start the construction of the secondary school is a fulfillment of President Edgar Lungu's agenda in ensuring that education is taken to the door steps of each and every Zambian so that nobody walks long distances in pursuit of education. We are confident that by January 2022, we shall have grade eights and tens at our newly built secondary school then build more classroom blocks to accommodate all grades by January 2023. Together we can! ANDREW LUBUSHA.

‘She threatened to undress herself’ By MULENGA MUSONDA
A MAN has told the Choma Fast Track Court for Gender Based Violence that he dragged the woman who is accusing him of assaulting her out of his yard when she threatened to undress herself. BSA Cup defending champions Zesco United and Lusaka Dynamos stormed the finals of this years’ edition of the lucrative K3.8 million rich cup competition after humiliating Konkola Blades and Zanaco in their respective ABSA Cup semifinal matches played yesterday at Arthur Davis Stadium in Kitwe.
First and second half goals from Maybin Kalengo, Enock Sakala and Kelvin Kampamba and an own goal from Kelly Kayembe propelled Zesco United to the finals after whitewashing Konkola Blades 4-0. Zesco broke the deadlock 16 minutes after kick off when Kalengo slotted home the opener after benefitting from Jese Were’s assist. The Ndola giants dominated most the first stanza where
they created numerous scoring chances with Were almost putting his name on the score sheet with a powerful shot which went wide in the 23rd minute. Kalengo almost completed his brace in the 27th minute but was unfortunate as his close range shot was saved by goal keeper Willard Mwanza. Blades came close to scoring the equaliser five minutes before the break when Owen Tembo’s effort on target was blocked by defender, Adrian Chama as the first stanza ended 1-0 in favour of the defending champions. In the second half, Zesco United run riot with defender, Kayembe doubling the advantage with an own goal before super sub Enock Sakala who had hit the cross bar earlier, made the game beyond reach for Konkola Blades to make it 3-0. Midfielder Kelvin Kampamba slotted home a low shot from outside the 18-yard after benefitting from John Chingandu’s defence splitting pass in the 79th minute to give Numba Mumamba’s boys a 4-0 win. Meanwhile, Lusaka Dyna-
mos humiliated Zanaco 3-0 in the other semifinal match played earlier to storm the finals. It was a sweet revenge for Lusaka Dynamos who were stunned 2-1 by Zanaco in the Super League as a first half own goal from Mangani Banda and two second half goals from Aubrey Funga and Emmanuel Chabula sent Lusaka Dynamos to the finals. Mangani Banda failed to handle Ocean Mushure’s sublime corner kick before Funga and Chabule beat Banda with second half goals as Lusaka Dynamos matched on to the finals. The defeat to Lusaka Dynamos angered Zanaco boss Chris Kaunda who attributed the defeat to the players’ failure to play according to the game plan. However it was all smiles for Wedson Nyirenda who boasts of being one of the best as he has never lost a semifinal match at any competition. The ABSA Cup champions will pocked K600, 000 while the runners up will receive K250, 000.
banama. “Beston Chambeshi has resigned from the position of Kansashi Dynamos Head coach with effect from April 17, 2021. He was engaged as head coach in December 2019. “Kansanshi Dynamos Football Club has accepted his resignation and wishes him well in his future career prospects and further wishes the remaining technical bench all the best in their future games,” Malama said. It is believed Chambeshi is heading to Forest Rangers who plan to release Chilumba following the team’s inconsistency in the MTN Super Division. Chilumba’s failure to compete in the CAF Confederations Cup and the ABSA Cup were Forest was eliminated by Eden University outfit Konkola Blades in the quarter finals saw the coach losing favour from the club’s executive. Forest Rangers occupy fourth position with 35 point, on par with third-placed Power Dynamos and their last defeat to Napsa Stars in a league tie made the situation worse for Chilumba.
Zidane - 'I'm not a terrible coach, I'm not the best either' ZINEDINE Zidane defended himself yesterday against accusations he is a lucky coach but again refused to commit to staying at Real Madrid next season.
An impressive week has put Madrid in sight of winning both La Liga and the Champions League, after they beat Barcelona in the Clasico last weekend before knocking out Liverpool on Wednesday. Despite sitting one point behind Atletico Madrid, Zidane's team are now favourites to defend the title they claimed last term in the Frenchman's first full season back in charge. It would add to the 11 major trophies Zidane has already won across his two spells as Real Madrid coach, which includes two league titles and three consecutive successes in the Champions League. Asked if it annoys him when he is called lucky, Zidane said: "I am lucky, it's true, lucky to be here and to coach this great club. Am I a terrible coach? I don't think I am terrible, I don't believe that. "I'm not the best either, sure, but I enjoy what I'm doing." Zidane's contract at Real Madrid runs until the summer of 2022 but doubts remain about whether he will continue beyond the current season. He resigned unexpectedly in 2018 after winning the Champions League and has been linked with taking charge of the French national team and Juventus, where he spent five years as a player. "I don't think about the future," said Zidane. "I don't know what will happen, you can have a five-year contract and leave tomorrow or the opposite. I'm happy and thinking about tomorrow's game." Real Madrid play away at struggling Getafe on Su n d a y, when Eden Hazard could make his first appearance in just over a month. Dani Carvajal has also recovered from injury and could ease Zidane's problems in defence, with Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Nacho Fernandez all out. -SUPERSPORT
