HEED SECOND WAVE WARNING SCEPTICISM might lead many Zambians to an early grave. This is because amidst the threat of the coronavirus pandemic hovering around the world, they have thrown caution to the wind. If anything, instead of stepping up health precautions, the opposite is happening. Bars and other drinking places have literally stopped observing the government’s stipulated opening hours, from Thursdays to Sundays. Yet, Government has warned of an imminent second wave of Covid-19 which entails that people do not drop their guard against the pandemic. President Edgar Lungu cautioned during the week that a new wave of CovId-19 seems to be on the horizon and all citizens must abide by the health guidelines put in place by experts. The President observed with dismay poor adherence to prescribed public health measures that had contributed to the sudden increase and geographical spread in the country in the last two weeks. The cases, he said, have been recorded in Kabwe, Lusaka, Chibombo, Kalumbila, Serenje, Itezhi tezhi, Liteta, Kasama, Nchelenge, Chinsali, Kaoma, and Sesheke. But even his grim warning appears to have fallen on deaf ears. Although face masks are mandatory in public places – enclosed – they have been discarded. Even on public transport, the wearing of face masks that was enforced when the pandemic just broke is not enforced. None of the major bus stations in Lusaka for example now enforce the mandatory wear of face masks. Even hand sanitisers and hand washing facilities that were introduced have conspicuously vanished. Shopping malls, banks and a few other shops insist on people entering the premises to have face masks. President Lungu’s warning could not have come at a better time than now as the country gets embroiled into the festive season during which health precautions are discarded. President Lungu also observed with concern, "The laxity towards Covid-19 guidelines by people patronising bars, musical concerts and other social gatherings.” The onus is therefore on the public to heed health guidelines or risk having their “freedoms” curtailed – just to ensure that they remain healthy. In South Africa for example, President Cyril Ramaphosa has imposed a longer curfew and placed further restrictions on gatherings across the country. President Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Monday evening amid a second wave of Covid-19 infections during which he said the curfew would be longer, starting at 23:00 and ending at 04:00. "Non-essential establishments, including restaurants and bars, will have to close at 22:00, so that staff and patrons can get home before the enforcement of the curfew. Zambians must realise that Covid-19 is a global threat and that their scepticism could lead to deaths that could otherwise be avoided with a little bit of care. They must not be fooled that the Covid-19 vaccine that has just been introduced in some major Western countries could save their lives – Zambia and other Third World countries might not get hold of the vaccine in the near future. The best defence is masking up, washing and sanitising hands as well as social distancing. Anything short of this is courting infection and death.

WHY UPND WARNED ECZ TO STOP REGISTERING INMATES By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE

W

HEN UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma warned the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to stop registering inmates because if not, they would fuel chaos in the country, he acted as if the 2017 Constitutional Court Judgement in the Case of Godfrey Malembeka versus the Attorney General, which validated the right to vote among prisoners under lawful custody did not exist. Observers were therefore surprised to see the UPND leaders and their supporters rejoice over the Constitutional Court’s ruling which had given former Cabinet ministers, their deputies and provincial ministers 30 days in which to pay back over K4.2 million which they got from the government in 2016. In this case, 64 ex-ministers were supposed to pay back salaries and allowances. This followed the court’s judgement of August 8, 2016 which ordered the ministers to pay back to the State all the allowances and salaries they received when Parliament was dissolved. The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) and UPND general secretary Stephen Katuka challenged the continued stay of the ministers after Parliament was dissolved ahead of the 2016 general elections and the case was decided in their favour. That’s when keen observers predictably asked themselves the question: “When does UPND abide by the Constitutional Court’s judgements, and why does it selectively disrespect others that don’t suit it?” Besides, why should UPND warn the ECZ to stop registering inmates and yet the latter was simply complying with the Constitutional Court’s judgement of 2017? Why should UPND force the ECZ to unlawfully act and risk being cited for Contempt of Court? UPND, a party that was once regarded as a beacon of political and general morality by many in the country, seems set on the path to political self-destruction if accusations of its unwarranted-attacks on the ECZ are anything to go by. Its leaders are adopting increasingly combative approaches. By pushing their – often false – complaints onto the streets as much as in the courts, UPND leaders have learnt how to deprive the government of the popular goodwill and international credibility it needs to govern effectively. But there is a danger. In doing so, UPND risks triggering a repressive backlash from the government seemingly entrenched in retaining power.

Moreover, opposition parties in our country enter elections knowing that they have little chance of winning. So it should not come as a surprise that more opposition parties and opposition-allied NGOs are attempting to shift the battleground to the court of public opinion. As well as increasing the pressure on Constitutional Court judges and Western ambassadors to act, effectively discrediting the ECZ and elections can harm the government’s reputation. This is true even if the official election results are ultimately allowed to stand. Apparently, the complete version of this opposition playbook involves five main steps. But, in practice opposition parties tend to use only some, depending on the situation:

COMPLAINTS By pushing their – often false – complaints onto the streets as much as in the courts, UPND leaders have learnt how to deprive the government of the popular goodwill and international credibility it needs to govern effectively. Lay the foundations. In the upcoming elections next year, UPND leaders have already begun to allege that the process was being manipulated well ahead of the voting day. This has encouraged journalists to look for evidence of irregularities, and generated popular expectations that the

process would be problematic. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is to consistently challenge electoral preparations. Examples include alleging bias in the mobile issuance of NRCs and voter registration processes, and corruption in the Dubai-based procurement of ballot papers. Direct the blame. Allegations of wrongdoing are most effective when they are personalised. So, UPND leaders typically seek to demonise prominent members of the electoral commission. For example, social media platforms are used to circulate rumours that senior electoral commission officials had been compromised by the ruling party, and are alleged to have received bribes. In countries like ours, these rumours often go unsubstantiated, but are nonetheless widely believed by party supporters, and by UPND-allied NGOs like GEARS, ActionAid, OCiDA and CiSCA. Claim victory. An election can only be discredited if it is plausible that the opposition actually won. Thus, canny UPND leaders spend a lot of time during the campaign and the counting of the votes claiming they have the momentum and are destined to win. This is usually followed by a press conference shortly after the ruling party’s victory has been declared to denounce the results, and claim that the opposition has evidence of systematic wrongdoing. This happened in 2016, when the UPND five-time presidential losing candidate slammed the process as “rigged.” Protest early, protest often. Opposition parties often have a strong support base in cities, towns and peri-urban

areas. The greater access to information and more densely packed voters makes it easier for them to mobilise support. This makes it possible to hold large protests, especially if civil society groups are also active and influential. Demand action. Having seen many disputed election results allowed to stand, African opposition leaders are increasingly willing to call out judges and the international community. This often includes refusing to recognise the legitimacy of the president, explicitly criticising international observers who fail to condemn the elections, and insisting that Western ambassadors accredited to their respective countries intervene to promote democracy. In Malawi, the Human Rights Defenders Coalition made it “the year of mass protests” in the run-up to the Constitutional Court’s judgement. This kept the pressure on the judges to make sure they would not be tempted to brush complaints under the carpet. Yet in Zambia, publicly discrediting ECZ officials and elections can help to uncover and deter electoral incompetence and manipulation. But, it’s a dangerous strategy. Given the risks involved, it’s noteworthy however, that discrediting an election very rarely means winning one. Showing that the electoral process was flawed can hurt the government, but does not usually lead to its defeat – at least in the short-term. One thing is for sure – UPND’s red-flagged narrative to stop the ECZ from registering inmates – unwittingly hinted at its hidden-motives for mimicking Malawi’s “year of mass protests” come 2021. Where this will leave the ECZ is anyone’s guess.

Avoid tribal traits - Lungu From Page 1 Mr Lungu said this yesterday at Mongu’s Trades Institute during the official launch of the PF Western Province conference. He urged Zambians to adopt a nationalistic approach that sees the nation first before the tribe, and that which pursues the benefits of society above self-interests because Zambia was “bigger than anyone of us.” The President said in the concerted efforts to take Zambia to glorious heights, people should not allow the lies, fear mongering, and divisive words of prophets of doom to poison their minds, weaken their patriotism, and bring havoc to the nation. “I, therefore, urge you all to refuse to fall into the trap of cynicism, tribalism and regionalism; tactics used by those who wish to go back to old strategies used by colonialists of “divide and rule”; by pitting one tribe against another. We must prevent this colonialism,” President Lungu said. Meanwhile, The President said fake news was not only in Zambia but all governments

were grappling with it because it was inimical to societal cohesion, and stability. He said it was important that, as citizens, Zambians verify information before it was taken as gospel truth. Mr Lungu who quoted Pope Francis warned that “internet-based fake news’ is fermenting prejudice and hatred, and our culture is losing its sense of truth as it bends the facts to suit particular interests." AS the Patriotic Front, he said, we must rise up to the challenge in defence of truth and what is good for the sake of Zambia’s peace, stability, and all-inclusive economic recovery and growth. And the President urged PF members to ensure that the conference was symbolic of a new beginning for the ruling party in Western Province as well as the rest of the country. To those of you contesting elections, he said, I urge you to canvass in a civil and united manner. He said after the results were announced, it was important to congratulate one another and offer hands of friendship to those who would not make it.

UPND WARNED AGAINST PROCESSION

…Don’t drag us into confrontation so that we are labelled brutal - Police

By SIMON MUNTEMBA

P

OLICE have warned the UPND against their planned unlawful procession ahead of Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s appearance for questioning at Police Headquarters in Lusaka. Police spokesperson Esther Katongo advised the UPND members to stay away from unlawful procession to avoid skirmishes. Ms Katongo was reacting to UPND Copperbelt Province chairperson, Elisha Mutambo who threatened that they would organise and send thousands of members from the provinces to accompany Mr Hichilema on the day he would be appearing before the police in Lusaka because they knew they wanted to arrest him. “That will be as good as having an unlawful public procession and the law will take its course. So people

Ms Katongo should stay in their places such as homes and offices because we have not summoned the whole party. We have summoned only one person who is the UPND leader. We only expect few people such as his lawyers

and others. “But people being in the street in the name of giving solidarity, that one we will not allow. And we don’t want to be in confrontation with any one so that we can be labelled brutal,” Ms Katongo warned. Mr Mutambo claimed that the party was aware that Government wanted to arrest Mr Hichilema on flimsy grounds and they would not allow their leader to go to police alone. He challenged the police to prepare enough cells to accommodate thousands of UPND members who would accompany Mr Hichilema. Mr Mutambo assured Mr Hichilema that he would not be alone the day the police will summon him. And Mr Hichilema, claimed that the police call out that was issued in Lusaka on Friday was aimed at stopping him from visiting the Copperbelt because the ruling party was scared of him.

Mr Hichilema, who claimed the call out was meant to suppress him politically lamented that he did not know how many times the government wanted to arrest him. Speaking to his party officials on the Copperbelt on Friday evening, Mr Hichilema stated that he was briefed about a police call out in Lusaka but told his lawyers to request for another day as he was out of town. On Friday, Police in Lusaka had summoned Mr Hichilema to Police Headquarters and is expected to appear tomorrow for questioning. Meanwhile, the Sunday Nation has learnt that Mr Hichilema had been summoned by the police in Lusaka to help them with investigations over the two different National Registration Cards that he obtained both bearing his names but different dates of birth.

Tanker drivers deserve K5, 000 or better, says union chief Streamline operations, water utility firms told By PETER SICHALI

WE welcome the minimum wage for truck and bus drivers but we would like it to be increased to at least K5, 000 for tanker drivers, says Tanker Drivers and Allied Workers’ Union of Zambia president, Bob Ndalama. And Mr Ndalama has urged the government to stop giving licences to employers that refuse their workers from joining unions. Mr Ndalama said the new minimum wage of

K3, 000 and K2, 200 was not fair for tanker drivers that transport dangerous goods and chemicals. “We are expecting those that transport dangerous goods to be given a minimum wage of K5, 000 considering the risks involved to transport these dangerous chemicals that include fuel, acids and other chemicals,” Mr Ndalama said. He said some tanker drivers were already getting more than the new minimum wage. Mr Ndalama however said the move by Govern-

ment to increase the minimum wage by over 100 percent is a demonstration of its commitment to improve the wellbeing of drivers. Mr Ndalama said the move to revise the minimum wage will help a lot of drivers most of whom were getting K1, 000 or less. “This is a very good move especially for our colleagues who were getting K1, 500 or less so this move will help improve their living standards and we are grateful to the government,” Mr Ndalama

said. He said there were a lot of companies that used to pay peanuts to drivers. Mr Ndalama said despite not giving the tanker drivers a minimum wage they desired they were happy the government has responded to the cries of setting the minimum wage for drivers who have for a long time been exploited. Mr Ndalama said a lot of employers are refusing their employees from joining the union and that government should act by not giving operating li-

‘We want strong trade unions’ Solwezi residents encroach into airport

By KETRA KALUNGA

REPORTS that the government wanted to weaken the labour movement to undermine their negotiating capacity were false because Government wanted credible unions that could effectively negotiate for the workers, Labour and Social Security Miinister, Joyce Nonde Simukoko has said. Ms Simukoko said the labour movement should not fall prey to lies disseminated by disgruntled people . She assured unions of their freedom to offer constructive criticism to the government as it was open to advise. Ms Simukoko was speaking yesterday in Kabwe during the sixth quadrennial congress for Zambia Revenue Authority Workers Union (ZRAWU). "Don't be cheated the government wants to weaken trade unions we are ready to accept

criticism unless criticism that is aimed at embarrassing us then we would not accept that," she said. Ms Simukoko said the government would want to see a labour movement that was ready to defend the rights of workers. She urged trade unions engage in thorough research on matters that affected workers for them to effectively negotiate for the conditions of service that would last a life time. And Ms Nonde has warned union leaders against the misuse of money paid by the members which she said was tantamount to theft. She said the ministry was concerned with increased reports of abuse of workers’ money by the trade unions and that the government they would tolerate such behaviour. Ms Simukoko said the ministry would ensure that every amount paid by the workers to the unions was accounted for.

THE Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has called on the Solwezi Municipal Council to remove people encroaching on the Solwezi airport to avoid possible accidents. CAA acting Board chairperson, Patrick Nswana appealed to the council to engage people who have settled in the airport premises as any accident with an aircraft may attract international attention and create problems for the regulators. “I’m appealing to the council to give superiority to the title holder of the land but as they do that let them engage them peacefully so that they understand that it is good for them,” Mr Nswana said. Mr Nwansa expressed concern over a church which is sitting at the threshold of a run

cences to such employers. He said Government should now undertake inspection to ensure compliance with the minimum wage. Government has increased the minimum wage for truck and bus drivers from K1, 500 to K3, 000 and K1, 000 to K2, 200 respectively. Minister of Labour and Social Security Joyce Simukoko signed a statutory instrument on Friday to effect the K3, 000 and K2,200 minimum wage for truck and bus drivers respectively.

way, making it dangerous in case any aircraft overshot. Mr Nwansa said this when he and his entourage paid a courtesy call on the North-Western Provincial administration in Solwezi. Meanwhile, CAA Director General, Gabriel Lesa noted that moving the airport may cost even more than relocating the communities as building a runway is very expensive. “In deciding the relocation of the airport, a lot of time should be given, to do a runway would cost too much money because the construction of a runway is one of the biggest costs of the airport… but for a few individuals and churches it should be easier to compensate them if need be to at least preserve the current asset that we have,” Mr Lesa said. And the provincial Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Chihili has commended the CAA for ensuring safety and security at the airports. – ZANIS.

COMMERCIAL water utility companies should restructure their business models for them to keep afloat and enhance service delivery, Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Minister Jonas Chanda has said. Dr Chanda said utility companies need to improve the provision of clean and safe water for the country to meet its national and international commitment. He was speaking during the launch of strategic plans for Chambeshi and Lukanga water supply and sanitation companies “Boards of the utilities as the custodians of policy direction ensure that you heed government’s call of ensuring companies restructuring of business operations,’’ Dr Chanda said. He said the ministry is committed to ensuring that water utilities contribute to the attainment of fiscal and debt sustainability in line with the economic recovery programme, it is imperative that public private partnership initiatives are implemented to free the treasury from further debt accumulation for water and sanitation infrastructure. Dr. Chanda said it was important for the commercial utility companies to align their business models to the programme to contribute in safeguarding livelihoods of the people through sustainable sustainable provision of water and sanitation services. “As you are aware, in order to ensure increased access to water and sanitation and thereby contribute to enhanced human development, the need for change of the current business models of water utilities cannot be overemphasised,” Dr Chanda said. Dr Chanda said the move will enable water utility companies become efficient and improve service delivery. He appealed to the boards of the utilities to accelerate the process of formulating the performance contracts of the chief executive officers to ensure that they account for their performance. He said this will enable the process of recruitment up to appraisal of their performance to be transparent.

MD president Nevers Mumba should be truthful about his dealings in DRC and stop blaming others for his predicament in that country, Chief Chikwanda of Mpika has said. Chief Chikwanda said it was important for Dr Mumba to be honest and tell the nation the truth about his DRC misadventure and allegations that led to his arrest. “Just telling the nation that he was arrested and interviewed on several allegations bordering on treason is not enough. Instead he should explain the exact allegations that he was being interviewed for,” the chief said. Chief Chikwanda said telling the nation that he had gone to that country for business is not convincing especially that Dr Mumba is a person vying for

Police retrieve stolen car in Lusaka By SIMON MUNTEMBA

POLICE in Lusaka have recovered a suspected stolen motor vehicle, a grey Toyota Corolla registration number BCA 5276 Grey which was stolen in Ndola. According to police spokesperson Esther Katongo, the vehicle was stolen from a 30-year-old driver identified as Anos Chanda by unidentified criminals after they allegedly poisoned him before dumping him at a grave yard in Ndola. Ms Katongo said the vehicle was found parked at a car park in Lusaka's Chilenje Township, by unknown persons on the pretext that the vehicle had developed a mechanical fault. “The vehicle which was found without tyres and registration number was retrieved and is parked at Chilenje Police Station,” Ms Katongo said. She dispelled information that was circulated on social media under the headline "Chilenje cops accused of attempting to steal stolen car." “This is a matter which is still under investigations and at no point did the police officers from Chilenje Police mentioned in the trending insinuation convert the motor vehicle for self-benefit,” she said. Ms Katongo emphasised that the motor vehicle was parked at Chilenje Police Station and would soon be handed over to police officers in Ndola from where it was stolen.

He said those aspiring for political office including the presidency should be subjected to scrutiny. “It is important for Zambians to thoroughly check leaders aspiring for political office to ensure that people with questionable characters are not put in office because this would put the peace, security and general wellbeing of the country at risk,” Chief Chikwanda said. Chief Chikwanda said there was need to subject those aspiring for the presidency to integrity test so that governance does not fall in wrong hands. Mr Chilala said in an interview yesterday the local authority allowed the ZCCM-IH to commence exploration in July this year and from that time they had made assurances to commence the exercise. Cashew nuts, an economy changer - President Lungu PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says cashew nut farming is a game changer for Zambia. And President Lungu has urged farmers in Western Province to grow cashew nuts alongside other crops because it will allow them to have another source of income as they wait for them to mature. President Lungu said the cashew nut crop is a high value crop that will create jobs for many Zambians. The head of state said this during the launch of the cashew nut 2020 planting season and distribution of six million cashew seedlings in Sefula area of Western Province. And a local farmer, Singalamba Munyinda who is a beneficiary of the Cashew infrastructure development project said she has already started seeing the benefits of growing cashew nuts. Mrs Munyinda said she will now be able to take her children to school and fend for the family Whilst in Sefula, President Lungu also toured fish ponds belonging to Muziwanjimo Cooperative group. During the tour, President Lungu said his government will continue uplifting people’s lives through pro-

He said the government needed to ensure accountability mechanisms were employed to avoid such cases where bags of inputs that had already been paid for by the farmers through their K400 contributions were stolen without trace. Mr Mulao reiterated the urgent need for investigations to be expedited to ensure the intended beneficiaries were compensated for them to carry on with their farming activities before time elapsed as they had already cleared their land for cultivation.

‘State’s aquaculture project has empowered Kafue youths’ By OLIVER SAMBOKO

GOVERNMENT through its ambitious aquaculture programme funded under the Zambia Aquaculture Development Enterprise Project (ZAEDP) has empowered youths in Kafue with capital to embark on fish farming. The ZAEDP is aimed at stimulating a viable aquaculture sub-sector in Zambia to promote economic diversification, food security and sustainable employment generation. Following the acquisition of a business loan from the Aquaculture Seed Fund of the Zambia Aquaculture Enterprise Development Project, Namulela Youth Cooperative has stocked 17 of its 34 fishponds with 51, 000 fingerlings. The cooperative has also procured a light truck to assist in operations on the farm that

has since created over 30 jobs. And Small-Scale Fish Farmers Association (SSFFA) official Victor Chatilika says the country is on the right direction towards achieving sustainability in the aquaculture subsector. Mr Chatilika said following provision of loans to individuals and cooperatives by the government through the aquaculture development programme, the country was slowly closing the fish deficit gap projected at over 80, 000mt per annum. He urged those that have accessed the aquaculture loans to use the seed money for the intended purpose and not divert it to things unrelated to the development of the aquaculture subsector. “The call to our members and other individuals or cooperatives that accessed aquaculture

loans from Government should ensure that the money is invested into the subsector and not diverted to other ventures not related to fish farming,” he said. Meanwhile, Mr Chatilika has called on Government to safeguard the captured fisheries sector to ensure fish in the country’s rivers is protected from wrong fishing methods. He said wrong methods of fishing such as use of poison, dynamites and mosquito nets should be criminalised because it was responsible for the depletion of fish in most water bodies in the country.

TORTOISE PROPHET RAPES, BOLTS

A

TEENAGE girl who was allegedly possessed with an evil spirit has been plunged into deeper trouble after a self-proclaimed prophet reportedly sexually attacked her before assigning a tortoise to suck her breast. A resident from Pelandaba suburb, Thulani Sibanda, said the self-proclaimed prophet only known as Madzibaba Sadza visited the minor’s granny in Nyanga to exorcise her homestead. “After exorcising the homestead Madzibaba Sadza convinced the granny that he could secure a job for her 17-year-old granddaughter. The granny agreed and he

left with the minor to Nkayi to conduct another exorcism,” said a resident. Sibanda went on to expose the sex offender’s shenanigans. “On 12 December 2020 at around 4.30am, after a healing session he ordered his aide known as Madzibaba Mthembo to take the minor to a secluded room which was about 200 metres away from his bedroom hut. The unsuspecting minor went there. He (Madzibaba Sadza) followed them with a packet of chips and gave it to the minor. Madzibaba Mthembo left them in the room. Madzibaba Sadza undressed and remained naked. He ordered the minor to

undress. The minor initially refused but he threatened to stab her with a knife. The teenager unwillingly took off her clothes and he licked her private parts before raping her,” said Sibanda. He added: “He sexually attacked the minor once again at around midday and once the following morning. He gave her a tortoise and said she should allow it to suck her breast so that she would make money. The minor said the tortoise sucked her during the night.” On 13 December 2020 they left Nkayi for Bulawayo. “They arrived at his lodgings in Pelandaba suburb and put up at his rented room where during the night he

raped her and let his tortoise suck her breast and insisted that she must let it suck her and when they go to South Africa she would secure a well-paying job and get rich instantly,” said Sibanda. The minor managed to escape after Madzibaba Sadza went to take a bath. She narrated her ordeal to a neighbour who informed other residents. “Unfortunately when we went to apprehend Madzibaba Sadza we found that he had fled. We then took the minor to Western Commonage police station and made a report,” said another resident who only identified herself as Khethiwe. Bulawayo police spokes-

Man murders nephew (8), cooks head THE 22-year-old suspect from Matova Village near Gokomere Mission under Chief Zimuto ,was found by alert neighbours stewing the boy’s head in a pot after barricading himself inside his hut. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the juvenile’s torso was found stashed in a nearby shallow pool. “We will release the name of the suspect and the deceased tomorrow (today) but the suspect is in police custody and investigations are underway to determine his mental state,” said Asst Comm Nyathi. “He was found cooking the boy’s head in a kitchen hut, while the remaining parts of the body were recovered in a shallow pool, wrapped in a mosquito net. “Investigations are under-

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi way.” According to sources, the incident occurred when the boy, who was in Grade 2 at Matova Primary School, sought shelter from the

heavy rains at his uncle’s home on Friday. The suspect is alleged to have killed the boy before cutting off his head. A search for the boy yes-

terday morning led to the recovery of his head after a relative forced his way into the suspect’s kitchen where he had locked himself from inside. - NEHANDA RADIO

However, reliable sources in the community are saying the man is walking scot-free after making the confession. Jacob is now said to be facing the full wrath of his late nephew, Zedek Muranganwa’s avenging spirit which reportedly carries him outside during his sleep. Zedek was murdered last year by his father’s brother Jacob.

The murder came to light when one of the Muranganwa siblings — John —approached acting Chief Mutasa’s court accusing his brothers — James and Abraham — of harassing him and breaching his peace. John said James and Abraham were accusing him of killing Zedek for ritual purposes. However, things took a dramatic twist when Jacob sprung from his seat to con-

fess to the murder. “I cannot endure this torment anymore. Every morning I wake up sleeping outside. At first, I thought I was sleep-walking, but when I started seeing Zedek’s image every night, I knew his avenging spirit was behind it all. “Whenever it gets dark, l see the boy’s image. I am the only one who sees him, even when I am with someone else,” confessed Jacob dur-

ing the court session. Jacob said he murdered Zedek for ritual purposes and harvested the boy’s private parts, arms, ears and eyes. Three days later, he hung the lifeless and mutilated body on a tree near the boy’s home to stage a suicide. Jacob fingered his brother, John, businessman Kwambana and another unidentified businessman, of contracting him to carry out a ritual murder to boost their businesses. John allegedly owns a leisure centre in Honde Valley. “Sometime last year, my brother John, Kwambana and another businessman asked me to harvest a young boy’s body parts for money-making rituals. - NEHANDARADIO

prophets who take advantage of unsuspecting people. As a community we deplore such evil acts and if anyone comes across him (Madzibaba Sadza) they must report him to the police.” The Member of Parliament for Mpopoma-Pelandaba constituency Charles Moyo said: “As a constituency we bemoan such a devilish deed, it’s against our culture and we are appealing to the community of Bulawayo and whoever could have information that may lead to the arrest of Madzibaba Sadza to contact any nearest police station. I urge community members to report such cases to community leadership.” - BMETRO

Man tells fiancée she can’t wear a white wedding dress because she’s not ‘pure’ A CONFUSED man took to Reddit to ask users why his wife-to-be was so upset when he told her the reason why she wasn’t allowed to wear a white wedding dress like she’d planned.

Honde Valley man confesses to killing 9-year-old nephew for ritual purposes A HONDE Valley man recently confessed to killing his nine-year-old nephew for ritual purposes, before going on to harvest the minor’s private parts, arms, ears and eyes after being contracted to do so by his brother and another businessman, The Manica Post has established.

person Inspector Abednico Ncube said: “We are investigating a case of rape where a self-proclaimed prophet allegedly raped a minor several times and also assigned his tortoise to suck the minor’s breast for ritual purposes. He added: “We are appealing to members of the public to seek understanding of how God’s services are done or provided. Normal and genuine services and prayers are conducted in church.” Insp Ncube appealed for information that may lead to the arrest of the Madzibaba Sadza who is on the run. Councillor for the area Frank Javangwe said: “We urge community members to be on alert for such fake

A man who convinced his fiancée not to wear white on their wedding day has been slammed for being “controlling”. The anonymous man, 32, who comes from a “very religious household” explained that it is against his family’s traditions for his partner, 23, to wear a white dress. He said: “So me and my soonto-be wife are planning to get married in a few months. “I come from a very religious household with strong Christian beliefs and one of the traditions in my family is if the woman getting married isn’t still a virgin they shouldn’t wear a white dress on their wedding day.” But the reason why has sparked outrage online. He continued: “My family knows my soon to be wife wasn’t a virgin when I met her because my mom asked me when I started dating her if she was pure, and I was honest and told her she had boyfriends before she met me.” Unsurprisingly, when he told

his girlfriend, she wasn’t happy. “My wife was really upset when I asked her if she could wear a coloured dress on our wedding day but she agreed, so we’re looking at getting glittery blue dress instead.” And now she’s having second thoughts. “She’s saying she won’t marry me because she’s too humiliated by the whole situation, but I really don’t see how it’s a big deal.” Confused as to why his wifeto-be is annoyed with him, he shared the post to Reddit to ask users what he did so wrong and they were quick to tell him. One said: “This is sick, and I can’t believe your GF stayed with you after this.” Another explained: “This is not a Christian tradition, nor is it a modern tradition. There is no ‘Christian color’ for virginity in marriage or anything else. Biblically, unmarried/virgin women wore multi-colored robes. “Until the early 20th century, blue was the ‘traditional’ color of purity, and weddings were generally held with people wearing whatever their best clothes were. White became envogue because of Queen Victoria’s white gown.” - MIRROR

Mayor Sampa bags 3 personality awards By TERENCE MISELO

LUSAKA Mayor Miles Sampa has become the biggest winner of this year’s Diamond TV Personality of the Year Awards after he collected three awards at a ceremony held at Lusaka’s Sarovar Hotel on Friday night.

Mayor Sampa was named the Social Media Personality of the year, most interactive personality and the most influential personality of the year. These awards organised by Diamond TV are determined by voters on social media

and are mainly meant to recognise outstanding personalities on social media. TV and radio personality Mutale Mwanza scooped the most fashionable personality award (female) while hip hop star Bobby East got the same award in the male category. Patson Daka won the sports personality and the philanthropist of the year went to Buumba Malambo. Gospel artiste Pompi got the gospel personality award while budding rapper Princess Natasha Chansa walked away with the rising star award. 16 awards were presented at an event that was anchored by Chimweka, Jona, Vida and Hot FM’s PeeZee.

2.How did you get into music? Like I said earlier, I was born in a musical family, where my late dad would come up with concepts and my mum was always singing while my brothers were also into music. Being the youngest, I developed interest. 3. Where do get your inspiration? My inspiration comes from Stevie Wonder and the late great professor PK Chishala and through their inspiration, I was priviledged to take part in the program called "Power in the Voice", sponsored by the British Council at Kabundi High School. I won a trophy for my school and then I discovered my talent. 4. What was your first song and how did you get here? My first song is called 'Shake em' featuring Chef 187. I have also done songs with Drifta Trek . Four years ago, I came to Lusaka from Chingola and met DJ Bizzy Wizzy who liked my new single called "Appreciate you" produced by Mr B. Because of this, he connected me with TV appearances with Innocent Kalaluka(Smooth Talk and Diamond TV and some few shows. 5. What's your future like and what do you think about Zambian music? My plans are to work with established artistes around Zambia and the world at large and to break records. I think we're heading in the right direction and the talent is growing in Zambia, considering the fact that big companies are coming in e.g Bwalya Kalandanya Music Promotions and Nexus Music Promotions coming in. Above all, targeting the international market is the future of Zambian music.

Wine, cheese may reduce cognitive decline RESEARCHERS have revealed that diet modifications - including more wine and cheese - may help reduce age-related cognitive decline in later years.

The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, is the first of its kind large scale analysis that connects specific foods to later-in-life cognitive acuity. For the findings, the research team from the Iowa State University in the US, analysed data collected from 1,787 ageing adults (from 46 to 77 years of age, at the completion of the study) in the UK. Participants completed a Fluid Intelligence Test (FIT) as part of a touchscreen questionnaire at baseline (compiled between 2006 and 2010) and then in two follow-

up assessments (conducted from 2012 through 2013 and again between 2015 and 2016). Participants also answered questions about their food and alcohol consumption at baseline and through two follow up assessments. The Food Frequency Questionnaire asked participants about their intake of fresh fruit, dried fruit, raw vegetables and salad, cooked vegetables, oily fish, lean fish, processed meat, poultry, beef, lamb, pork, cheese, bread, cereal, tea and coffee, beer and cider, red wine, white wine and champaign and liquor. The findings showed that cheese, by far, was shown to be the most protective food against age-related cognitive problems, even late in life.

The daily consumption of alcohol, particularly red wine, was related to improvements in cognitive function. The researchers found that weekly consumption of lamb, but not other red meats, was shown to improve long-term cognitive prowess. Excessive consumption of salt is bad, but only individuals already at risk of Alzheimer’s disease may need to watch their intake to avoid cognitive problems over time. “Our results suggest that responsibly eating cheese and drinking red wine daily are not just good for helping us cope with our current Covid-19 pandemic, but perhaps also dealing with an increasingly complex world that never seems to slow down,” the study authors wrote. - IOL

T

he annual Tusk Conservation Awards or the “Conservation Oscars” as they are now known were established in 2013 in conjunction with His Royal Highness, The Duke of Cambridge “to celebrate the achievements of extraordinary people whose work protecting Africa’s irreplaceable natural heritage might otherwise go unnoticed”.

In the last four years alone, three Zambian conservationists have been nominated for the prestigious “Ranger of The Year Award”, and two have gone on to win. This year Zambia can be proud to have been represented in the Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa category by long-term conservationist, Ian Stevenson, CEO of Conservation Lower Zambezi. Since taking over the helm, Ian’s work and leadership in the Lower Zambezi have led to an impressive and dramatic decline in elephant poaching in the area. “Thinking beyond any single species, his calling has been to protect and conserve the Lower Zambezi as an ecosystem. Only then, he believes, will elephants and other iconic species have a chance of survival. With sustainability at the forefront of his efforts, Ian has built critically beneficial linkages with Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife, as a result, ensuring thousands from communities surrounding conservation areas can benefit from tourism. His dedication has also seen him establish environmental education and community engagement programmes, reaching thousands of students in some of the most rural communities surrounding the Lower Zambezi National Park.” – Tusk Awards Committee Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) is a Zambian nongovernmental organization committed to the conservation and sustainable use of the local wildlife and natural resources of the Lower Zambezi through environmental protection, education, and community support. CLZ works in close partnership with Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife and safari operators throughout the ecosystem. CLZ initially deployed teams across the park in an old Land Rover from a simple base camp built on the banks of the Zambezi donated by the safari operators. Since its humble beginnings with basic support to the wildlife authority, CLZ has grown and increased its activities and efforts in the Lower Zambezi. Not only has CLZ’s support to DNPW increased substantially over the years, but the organisation now also runs an Environmental Education Programme (2004), a Community Scout Unit (2013), a Community Engagement Programme (2011), a Detection and Tracking Dog Unit (2015) and a Rapid Response Unit (2018). CLZ also hosts the annual Safari Guides Training courses and exams for the Lower Zambezi (2001). In 2011, Ian became CEO leading a team of 11 staff. Over the years the organization has

grown now employing over 70 staff. This year’s awards ceremony was, for the first time, a purely virtual event, on account of the restrictions imposed by Covid-19. The event celebrated all that can be achieved against the odds showcasing films of the five finalists in Africa and interviews with them and our pa-

trons such as adventurer & TV Personality Bear Grylls who introduced the Tusk Ranger Award. While Ian did not win the award he has won the admiration and respect of those who have worked with him over the years and his nomination is another prestigious, international recognition of Zambia’s work in wildlife conservation.

JUSTINA MUTALE REVEALS POWER SECRETS OF FEMALE WORLD LEADERS By TERENCE MISELO

“T

HE power of women in politics is a soft power”, said Kosovo’s first-ever female President, Atifete Jahjaga. Zambia’s Justina Mutale has gone ahead to reveal that power by writing a book that chronicles the leadership journey and stories of iconic female world leaders through the ages. “This book is making a timely debut at a significant moment in world history… a time in which issues of gender parity, and the empowerment of women, are taking their pride of place in global discourse”, says Senator Donzella J. James, Senate of the State of Georgia, USA. Despite growing numbers of female world leaders and changing mind-sets, leadership continues to be dominated by men. In her book, Justina Mutale argues that throughout history we have seen many powerful women across the world excel in leadership and demonstrate key characteristics that, if emulated and embraced, have the power to fundamentally change society for the better. Within her new book, “The Art of Iconic Leadership”, Justina delves into the past and present of iconic women to inspire the trailblazing leaders of the future and implore them to harness opportunities for global change. “This book is my gift to the next

generation woman, to every young woman and every girl. A gift to inspire their leadership journey and to let them know that it is possible to lead as a female”, say Justina Mutale

Justina’s specialist knowledge regarding the strategies to excel as a female leader is evident from her distinctive track record. Justina is a seasoned professional speaker, delegate, event convenor, mentor and leadership coach. She discusses her own first-hand experiences in the book, both the successes and challenges, to motivate readers. With this in mind, proceeds from the book go to the Scholarship Fund at the Justina Mutale Foundation to help disadvantaged you women and girls from rural communities in Africa access tertiary education across the globe. Within the book, which pulls together politics, gender, economy, strategy, leadership and geo-politics, Justina has identified a number of different characteristics, many of these soft skills, that she believes are fundamental for effective leadership and have been consistently exhibited by female leaders across history, including courage, compassion, resilience and purpose. She also delves into how millennials are leading differently, reflecting on Jacinda Ardern’s impressive success to date. “The entry of this book into the global literary market is both welcome and necessary… it plays its part in an enduring legacy to

inspire women and girls this century and beyond”, Says Baroness Sandip K. Verma, Chair of UN Women UK & Member of The House of Lords.

To demonstrate the power of these characteristics she showcases key female leaders in history, bringing the achievements of women across the world to the fore to show just what is possible with women at the helm. Justina recounts the reign of Catherine the Great of Russia and how she exercised her creativity to bring innovation like no other. Justina also discusses Queen Elizabeth II and the successful leadership characteristics she has embodied throughout her reign, including astute emotional intelligence. The book has a global focus and includes many women outside of the western world that perhaps readers may not have heard of, including Nkosazana Clairice Dlamini-Zuma, the first ever woman to lead the African Union Commission. She is also the first ever woman to present herself as a presidential candidate in South Africa.

seeking a comprehensive guide to the power of secrets of female world leaders. It is an ideal read for any aspiring female leader keen to learn about the past and the present, so they can be prepared to be the future and command real change. The book is available at Amazon as well as in bookstores, airports, and E-book platforms, as well as some libraries and universities around the world.

It is clear that the coronavirus pandemic has proved the effectiveness of female leadership in times of crisis, and it is essential this recognition is not lost. Justina argues that female leaders are infinitely capable and flourish given the same opportunities as their male counterparts. The Art of Iconic Leadership is the perfect read for anyone

When they appeared for plea before Magistrate Muyambango Munukayumbwa, Nchepeshi willingly admitted the charge and stated that he was using the controlled drug to cure his ear infection. On the other hand, his co accused Manenga denied any wrong doing. Magistrate Munukayumbwa entered a plea of guilty in respect of Nchepeshi and a plea of innocent for Manenga. By MULENGA MUSONDA A 22-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in the Choma Magistrate’s Court on accusations that he stole over K920 from his uncle. The accused, Nchimunya Changwe is charged with theft contrary to section 272, Chapter 87 of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia. Allegations are that Changwe, an employee of Itel stole K922 cash the property of Mr Frank Muntanga, his uncle on November 30 in Choma. When he appeared for plea before Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri, Changwe denied the allegations compelling the court to enter a plea of guilty. Immediately after the court recorded a plea of not guilty, his uncle applied that the matter be withdrawn as he had forgiven him. But the magistrate rejected the application as the accused denied stealing the money and as such there was no point of withdrawing the matter on the basis that the complainant had forgiven him. The case was adjourned to December 22 for trial and Changwe was remanded in custody. In the same court, a 45-yearold farmer appeared for explanation of the charge of murder. Allegations are that Briven Hanzuki of Choma, murdered Hanzia Hantamba on dates unknown but in the month of November. Hanzuki will appear for mention or possible committal to the High Court on December 24.

SCANTY MAIZE SUPPLY TO TRIGGER HIGH MEALIE MEAL PRICE Dear Editor,

T

HE Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) recently announced that there is a scanty supply of maize stock in the country. The low supply of maize on the market can be attributed to smuggling of the commodity into the neighbouring countries such as Malawi and Congo DR. The other reason for the low supply of maize is due to low yield because some regions did not receive adequate rainfall during the last farming season. The trickledown effect of the low supply of maize is that the price of mealie meal, our

staple food will go up. It is anticipated that the price of mealie meal next year will rise to about K200.00 per 25kg bag of Breakfast mealie meal. However, the anticipated rise in the price of mealie meal will adversely affect many people because its price will be unaffordable for most consumers. It is a well established fact that many people are wallowing in abject poverty. The only relief for people who cannot afford the anticipated exorbitant price of mealie meal is to resort to buying pamela (pre packs of mealie meal). This will be costly especially for people with big families. The panacea for the low

supply of maize is that our security wings such as the Zambia Army, Zambia National Service and Zambia Police is to seal all borders in a bid to curb the smuggling of maize into the neighbouring countries. Before the maize stock is depleted, there is need for the Government through the Ministry of Agriculture to consider importing maize from other countries. Ultimately, this will cushion the impact of scanty maize stock. From the economic perspective, the law of demand and supply states that when demand is more than supply, the prices of goods and supply will be high. On the other

hand, when supply outstrips demand, the prices of goods and supply will be low. With the scanty supply of maize stock, the price of mealie meal is likely to skyrocket in the short term as a consequence. , Zambians should therefore brace themselves for the high price of mealie meal exacerbated by scanty supply of maize on the market. To ameliorate the problem of scanty maize supply currently prevailing on the market, there is need for the government through the Ministry of Agriculture to find the lasting solutions. ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

WE are disappointed that UPND president Hakainde Hichilema through his hired mouth piece Anthony Bwalya can go to the greater lengthy even to trivialise the questions of constitutionalism as “not being important.” Mr Hichilema has once again failed us by giving us an assurance that he will be accountable to the people he seeks to lead. The basic functions of the spokesperson is to assume the proxy role to provide answers and clarity on important questions which the third party may not get from the principal. In this regard, among the pertinent questions the public has been having are the internal mechanisms in the UPND to guarantee democracy and the rule of law. The respect for the law of the land should be traced from the way their constitution is applied, and we have every reason to worry if it is applied selectively. The appearance by the two members of HH’s inner circle on the last Friday’s edition of Radio Phoenix programme dubbed, “Let the people Talk” is among such platforms HH’s proxies can be asked for clarity on pertinent questions. One sceptical listener who had a privilege of calling in to ask what the constitution of UPND prescribe as far as the tenure of office of the UPND president states. Typical of his principal’s attitude of dodging questions, Mr Bwalya blatantly disregarded the caller’s honest pursuit for the truth and “inviting him to the secretariat.” We wonder whether Mr Hichilema values the importance of being accountable to the people he seeks to lead. It is very disproportionate that the question which was asked in public on behalf of the people who share the same view can be answered in private. If Mr Bwalya failed to answer that question on the public forum, there is no way he can answer it at a very secluded and restrictive venue namely, the UPND Secretariat. In our view, that question may not be suitable to be answered or asked at a restricted place. From this, we can infer that Mr Bwalya “tactfully evaded”

Nkana FC's blessings, successes are not accidental Dear Editor, IN the spirit of "God loves cheerful givers," the Nkana Midlands Bureau took the opportunity of the festive season to join hands with Tomorrow Investments Limited to donate replica jerseys to City of Hope Girls Centre, St. Bonaventure, Lusaka. On arrival at the centre, the Midlands Bureau representatives were very well received by Sr. Prisca Mwila and her buoyant team of Catholic nuns and the girls. City of Hope heartily sang songs of praise and success

for Nkana FC. They prayed for the club and wished the team God's protection and blessings in all its endeavours. City of Hope grabbed the opportunity to share experiences of their recent participation in a tournament in Spain at which well-established girls’ soccer teams from around Europe, South America, and Asia also participated. Bubbling with confidence due to their recent European experience, City of Hope took the opportunity to send a message to Kitwe-based Nkana Queen's and sound a challenge for a soccer match to be

played as a prelude to one of Nkana FC's games against Lusaka-based premier division opponents. The City of Hope Centre looks after vulnerable girls (mainly) from surrounding communities, some of whom are in boarding and others on day-release. Managed by the Catholic Church, City of Hope Centre offers primary school, secondary school, life skills development, and TEVETA accredited tertiary training. The donation of Nkana replica's to City of Hope Girl's Centre is part of the Nkana

Midlands Bureau outreach and supporters mobilisation programme. The bureau was represented by the patron Chileshe Kandeta, vice chairman Jonas Simbeye, Grassroots coordinator Jack 'Chilepule' Mbale and ladies’ representatives Patra Kapembwa and Dora Ndubeni. In the last one month, the Nkana Midlands Bureau has also reached out to Fountain of Hope Centre in Lusaka where a similar donation was made. The Nkana replica donation initiative, which solely depends on well-wishers, is an on-going exercise and will ex-

tend to other Midlands Bureau Regions as and when resources to bulk-procure replica's come through. The Nkana Midlands Bureau is a voluntary entity of Nkana FC supporters based in Western, Eastern, Central, Southern and Lusaka regions of Zambia. If you are in the Midlands region and wish to join, contact the Nkana Midlands Bureau Secretary Dalitso Banda on on 0979904600. Membership is K50 per annum. Subscriptions of K20 per month are also encouraged to meet the needs of the bureau like operational costs and hir-

the question. This is the difference with President Lungu and his agents who purportedly speaks for him even from the Patriotic Front’s perspective. There are pertinent questions regarding his political future. As an illustration, President Lungu appreciates that the nature of his office makes his personal not to be easily accessible or ubiquitous to answer pertinent questions from the public.

Mr Hichilema As such, it would be unfair to invite every person answering genuine questions to the place of our convenience. There has been several efforts for Mr Hichilema to show intolerance to divergence views. On his social media platforms, he has blocked a number of people who staunchly criticise him. This is in his quest to create a perception that the social media patrons have unilaterally rallied behind him. We therefore see it as an act of gross irresponsibility for Mr Hichilema to dodge the genuine questions. How then does he inspire confidence that he will run an accountable Government in the event he was given an opportunity to walk the corridors of power? We saw nothing wrong in asking him about the tenure of his office and we see everything wrong in him avoiding to answer such a question. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI.

ing music systems on match days in the Midlands. For Nkana FC supporters from North-Western, Luapula, Muchinga, Northern and Copperbelt regions who wish to formally join the Nkana supporters’ fraternity, please contact the CB Bureau Secretary Skinner Moyo on 0967260011 for details. Compliments of the season to the entire Nkana family. Let us all join hands in wishing glad tidings, success, and victory for our team in their FAZ league and CAF continental matches. God bless, DALITSO BANDA, Secretary, Nkana Midlands Bureau.

Leopards maul Buildcon By MUKWIMA CHILALA

PRISON Leopards have maintained their top four position following a 1-0 win over Buildcon in their week 11 fixture played in Kabwe yesterday. Prior to the game, Leopards were on fourth place and have since moved to third place on the Super Division league. David Obash was the difference for the two sides as his ninth minute strike was all Leopards needed to add more woes to Buidlcon side. In other fixtures, Lusaka Dynamos recently signed midfielder Collins Sikombe contined with his fine form for his side as his goal was enough to seal the win for his

team as they beat Indeni 1-0 in Ndola. Stuttering Green Bufaloes and Forest Rangers shared the spoils in their fixture played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka with Chipili Mungule scoring for Buffaloes while Quadri Kolatwas scored for Rangers in their 1-1 tie.. Red Arrows are back to winning ways following their 2-0 win over Young Green Eagles in the second double header played at Nkoloma Stadium. Paul Katema opened the scores in the third minute while Felix Bulaya completed the rout in the 82 minute to hand Arrows victory. Fathi eyes winning run By MUKWIMA CHILALA

NAPSA Stars head coach Mohamed Fathi is confident that his team will continue with their fine form in the Confederation Cup as they host UD Songo of Mozambique on Tuesday. The Mozambican arrive in the country today ahead of the first leg first round fixture to be played at the Heroes Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

December 20, 2020

https://www.facebook.com/dailynationews

Fathi said he was confident that his team would replicate their form of the last two games in the preliminary round in which they saw off FC Ngazi of Comoros.
