LUNGU HAILS BIDEN, MUSEVENI VICTORIES

By OLIVER SAMBOKO

P

R E S I D E N T E d g a r Lungu has congratulated Joe Biden for being sworn in as the United States of America’s 46th President. Mr Biden was sworn in yesterday at Capitol Hill in Washington DC, alongside his Vice President Kamala Harris. President Lungu said Zambia and the US enjoy great bilateral relations which he was confident will continue under Mr. Biden's administration. The head of state also congratulated his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri

Museveni for retaining his seat in the January 14th Presidential election in that country. President Lungu said President Museveni’s victory shows the confidence and trust that the Ugandan people have in him to continue steering that country to prosperity. Mr Lungu said he shares President Museveni’s belief that poverty can only be wiped out of Africa if the grassroots are empowered to produce food for home consumption and the surplus for sale so that they earn capital. The President said the agriculture sector if well managed can end hunger in Africa as President Museveni always says. This is according to a statement issued to

the Daily Nation by Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Isaac Chipampe.

‘Amend law to allow inmates to stand as MPs’ By OLIVER SAMBOKO AMEND constitution to allow prisoners elect their own Member of Parliament who will represent their interest in the National Assembly, an exprisoner Maybin Cheelo has advised. Mr Cheelo said prisoners should be allowed to choose an MP from among themselves or someone who has been in prison in the past. “Now that prisoners can vote in a general election, the constitution should be amended so as to allow prisoners to elect one or two members of Parliament from among themselves,” he said. About 20, 000 inmates will be eligible to vote in the August 12 elections after a Constitutional Court ruling.

In this case, Dr Godfrey Malembeka, the Chief Executive officer for Prisons Care and Counselling Association (PRISCA) petitioned the Attorney General and the ECZ and the court held that the prisoners should be granted the right to vote. Mr Cheelo said following the ruling by Constitutional Court, the constitution should be amended to allow prisoners to have their own representative in the National Assembly. He said Zambia has moved from punishment to a rehabilitation prison model to ensure that those under rehabilitation become responsible citizens once they are reintegrated into society. “This can only be achieved through coming up with proper programs tailor made to ensure that those in incarceration comes out prison, better citizens who are to contribute to social and economic development of the country,” Mr Cheelo added. He called on society to stop stigmatising former prisoners as this could push them back to criminal activities.

Students insist on limiting number of poll observers By SILUMESI MALUMO

TO reduce the spread of Covid-19, there is need to restrict the number of foreign election observers in the August elections, the Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) has said. ZANASU president Steven Kanyakula said international observers from countries where Covid-19 cases were high should stay away. He said in the alternative, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) should restrict the numbers of persons from such countries. "We are, therefore, shocked that Mr William ‘Tekere’

Vedanta blocks liquidator from splitting KCM By GRACE CHAILE-LESOETSA THE Lusaka High Court has granted Vedanta Resources Holdings limited and two others, an order of interim injunction, restraining provisional liquidator Milingo Lungu from undertaking any reorganisation of Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM). In this matter, Vedanta Resources Holdings Limited, Vedanta Resources (Jersey II) Limited and Vedanta Resources Limited have sued Mr Lungu challenging the

STATE MUST BE AGGRESSIVE OVER IMF DEAL, SAYS KALUMBA By SILUMESI MALUMO GOVERNMENT needs to be aggressive when engaging the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the country is in dire need of resources to revive the economy, former Minister of Finance Katele Kalumba has said. Dr Kalumba said the pace at which the government was engaging the IMF team was not pleasing hence the need to up their game to ensure that Zambia obtains the IMF package. He said this time around there was no need to be reluctant because only support from the IMF would help improve the economic wheels of the country. Dr Kalumba said in an interview yesterday that it was important that the team from Ministry of Finance, the treasury and the Bank of Zambia gave the IMF team credible information. Dr Kalumba said the only thing which

the IMF needed from the government was the truth about the economic situation. He said the country had managed to get help from the IMF before, therefore, there was nothing different this time around. “I have said it before and I am repeating today, it is important that Government considers to engage experts who can help to talk to IMF. “We have experts who managed to engage the IMF and government can take advantage and engage these experts so that the country can obtain this IMF package. “This time around we need to work hard so that the IMF team is convinced. We really need the resources so that we improve this struggling economy,” Dr Kalumba said. He said the economy was grappling hence the need to work tirelessly to ensure the IMF package was actualised.

Vote enmasse, says Lungu By AARON CHIYANZO in Kanchibiya ALL registered voters should ensure that they vote in the August 12 general elections, President Edgar Lungu has said. President Lungu said this during a meeting with headmen from Kanchibiya yesterday. He commended the people of Kanchibiya for registering to vote enmasse. President Lungu however urged the electorate to ensure that they exercise their right to vote. “I am happy that you people registered en masse, please ensure that you vote,” he said. And during a meeting with Chief Luchembe, Senior Chief Kopa, Chief Kabinga and Chief Mpepo earlier, President Lungu requested the traditional leaders to name officials who were not working, saying that those failing to execute their duties would be chucked out. This follows a complaint from the chiefs that some challenges which were promised to be sorted out when the President previously visited the area had still not been done. The chiefs through their representative, Chief Luchembe said some roads and other infrastructure projects which were promised had still not been fulfilled. President Lungu however assured the traditional leaders that he would follow up with the relevant authorities responsible. Meanwhile, President Lungu said Government was striving to create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. He said when businesses thrive, they were able to pay necessary taxes to the Zambia Revenue Authority which the State uses to provide services to citizens.

…Don’t use cheap politics to debate economy, opposition warned

From page 1

He said in an interview that it was dangerous for politicians to always politicise economic issues because unlike politics which are cheap, the economy was real and revolved around principles and realities among other facets. “When it comes to the economy, there are a lot of stakeholders, there are the unions, you can’t ignore them and the interest of unions were

considered in this issue. “Therefore, the decision that the government makes regarding the operations of the mines is in consultation with other stakeholders,” he said. Mr. Hamududu bemoaned the fact that there is so much politics around the economy and urged politicians both in the opposition and in government to let the economic decision be founded on evidence and tested principles.

He advised politicians not to politicise every decision made by the government as doing so would cheapen the debate on fundamental economic issues. “We must de-politicise business, we must depoliticise the economy because politics and economy can’t mix, the economy will be defeated because politics is cheap and the cheap thing always defeats the real thing,” Mr Hamududu said.

HH won’t have hands on mines again, says PF By SIMON MUNTEMBA PRIVATISATION of state assets at the hands of Hakainde Hichilema and his team left hundreds of people miserable, the reason why Zambians cannot give him chance to dupe them again, the Patriotic Front (PF) has said. PF Lusaka Province Secretary, Kennedy Kamba, said Mr Hichilema, should realise that Zambians were not gullible to trust him again after what he did during privatisation. Mr Kamba told the Daily Nation yesterday that Zambia could have been a different country by now if Mr Hichilema and his selfish team did not undervalue the mining assets at the time of privatisation. “They say once bitten, twice shy. The fact is Mr Hakainde Hichilema caused the suffering of many Zambians when he got the mandate to value the assets of the mines during the privatisation process and undervalued the assets. He can never be given chance to kill this country twice,” Mr Kamba said. On ZCCM-IH taking absolute ownership of Mopani Copper Mines, Mr Kamba said Zambians were capable of running the mine, adding that Zambians were tired of being cheated by foreign investors in the mining sector. He said Zambians under ZCCM-IH were willing to redeem the mines through investment and mining development to make them viable again. “Zambians are proud of President Edgar

TIME FOR HARD WORK THE hard work has just started for Mopani Copper Mines (MCM). The mining company, which has just been acquired by ZCCM-IH must under its new management shame cynics and prove that it is not an exercise in futility. Government through ZCCM-IH had acquired 100 percent shareholding in Mopani Copper Mines in a $1.5 billion deal. There have been many sceptics who have argued that Zambians do not have the capacity to operate the mines. As Patriot for Economic Progress (PeP) president Sean Tembo said, only people with a self defeating mentality would arbitrarily oppose the move by ZCCM-IH to acquire 100 percent shares in Mopani Copper Mines. These are the doubting Thomases that must be put to shame and exonerate the government that indeed, the mining company is now in better hands. Rather than focus on the economic benefits that the mining deal has for the country, critics, especially from the opposition political parties have tried to plant a seed that Zambians are not competent to operate mines. But against a backdrop of the previous owners hell bent on arm twisting the government at every turn, and even threatening to have thousands of miners on the streets, the State had no option but to act. If anything, the disclosure by Mines and Minerals Development Minister Richard Musukwa on the future prospects of Mopani justifies the deal. Mr Musukwa said Mopani Copper Mines has a copper resource at 281 million metric tonnes at a grade of two percent with further potential for exploration and a lifespan of over 25 years, He said this means that the availability of copper and cobalt resources at this mine are guaranteed to continue for many years. The life of Mopani, he said, stands at 25 years with the prospect of further extension as more exploration is conducted. “What this means is that this entire generation will continue mining and even the generation of our grandchildren will continue to mine at Mopani. We have no doubt that Mopani will not fail as the deal has the support of the key stakeholders – the miners – through their trade unions. The unions, after having their members saved from a life of uncertain misery are not likely to allow their members to create industrial problems for the mining firm. Government’s bold move should help to give confidence to Zambians that there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel, that mining still has a future. As Economic Association of Zambia President Lubinda Habaazoka noted, those in charge of running the mine must be patriotic and ensure that set objectives are met. Indeed, there is no reason to fail when the whole nation has pinned its hopes on them.

COPPER RESOURCE - MINISTER

By SILUMESI MALUMO

MOPANI Copper Mines has a copper resource at 281 million metric tonnes at a grade of two percent with further potential for exploration and a lifespan of over 25 years, Minister of Mines and Mineral Development Richard Musukwa has said. Mr Musukwa said this means that the availability of copper and cobalt resources at this mine are guaranteed to continue for many years. The life of Mopani, he said, stands at 25 years with the prospect of further extension as more exploration is conducted. "What this means is that this entire generation will continue

mining and even the generation of our grandchildren will continue to mine at Mopani. This is important to emphasise to the Copperbelt community that may be anxious that perhaps the exit of Glencore may spell the end of the mine’s life," Mr Musukwa has said. Mr Musukwa said the new infrastructure and the rehabilitation of old infrastructure would extend the life of Mopani by 20 to 35 years. He said it was expected that there would be an annual increase in Mopani’s own source of copper production by about 40 percent. The minister said the increase in production would

make it easier to refund the loan much quicker. "It will also allow for the employment of more people at the mine. Consequently, government will stand to benefit in terms of higher taxes from the mine as well as through job creation," Mr Musukwa said. In terms of production, he said, the current production at Mopani for 2020 was 34, 479 tonnes compared to 30, 078 in 2019. He told the Daily Nation, "In other words, notwithstanding the Covid-19 challenges and the anxiety that characterised the takeover talks, the board, management and staff of Mopani have produced better than expected results.”

The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority and National Health Research Authority have been directed to ensure citizens are protected and only availed with safe remedies. Minister of Health, Dr Jonas Chanda made the directive yesterday during the covid19 update where he also said the country had more than 10,000 active cases in facilities with seven days recorded in the last 24 hours. “I hereby direct Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority and National Health Research Authority as regulators to step in and ensure the best interests of Zambia's citizenry are protected and that only safe remedies are availed to the public," Dr Chanda said. He said government remained steadfast in its commitment to end Covid 19 and was making great efforts to ensure provision of quality care for citizens.

He said government had continued to scale up capacity to test and manage Covid 19 patients. "Yet we are sadly aware of elements within our society who wish to take advantage of the current situation for their economic gain. I appeal to each of us to remain vigilant and not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of,” he said. Meanwhile Dr Chanda said in the last 24 hours Zambia record 1,434 new cases out of 11,179 tests conducted and seven related Covid 19 deaths. The cumulative number of cases, he said, now stands at 40,949, while 1,709 patients have been discharged from both our facilities and home based management. "This brings the cumulative number of recoveries to 29,775. The cumulative number of deaths is now 585," he said. Dr Chanda said currently the country had 10,589 active cases, of these 394 were admitted with 245 on oxygen therapy and 31 were in critical condition.

Mulungushi varsity insists on opening By KETRA KALUNGA MULUNGUSHI University has insisted that postgraduate students must report on Sunday, January 24, 2021 despite the rising cases of COVID-19. Additionally, the university has instructed students to report to the Great North Road Campus with Covid-19 certification. According to a circular dates January 19, 2021, and signed by registrar Gubula Siachiti, students are required to report on Sunday with Covid-19 test results that are not more than 48 hours. “Students will be required to report to the Great North Road campus on 24th January 2021 with Covid-19 test results that are not more than 40 hours old,” the circular said. However, students have

Mr Siame

complained that they would not be able to get the Covid-19 certificate within the remaining three days because it takes about a week for health authorities to issue the certificates. They have further wondered why management at the university have asked

them to report to campus at the height of the second wave of Covid-19 cases. The circular does not state what would happen to students, whose results would come out positive as the university has insisted on contact learning as opposed of online lectures. When contacted, Higher Education Ministry Permanent Secretary, Kayula Siame, expressed surprise and wondered why management at the university has gone against directive issued by her ministry to learn online. Ms Siame said in an interview her ministry has guided that all universities with classes that were in session should migrate to online learning. According to the circular, open and distance learning residential school for postgraduate students would run from January 24 to February 5, 2021.

By KALOBWE BWALYA WE ARE not fighting the New Life Christian Church, but the illegalities involved in the matter, therefore no one is above the law, Kalundu Welfare Society (KWS) secretary Maggie Nakazwe has said. Ms Nakazwe however said the response to a Mr Tembo’s utterances has now raised more concern, more so that a church is meant to be sincere and operate above board. Ms Nakazwe said New Life Christian Centre – Zoe Branch has contravened the planning procedure and process and as a result, it was issued with a stop order before Christmas 2020. Ms Nakazwe revealed that the church had no change of use that has been granted for the said plot and remains gazetted a residential plot. She said said the church has not been granted any permission or authority to operate, therefore they were operating illegally as a church under a marque. She said the church has continued to cause noise pollution on Saturdays during their rehearsals from afternoon until around 19:30 hours including Sunday service from 09 hours to around 13 hours. Ms Nakazwe disclosed that KWS is a registered entity under the Registrar of Societies, Section 7 (2) of Societies Act CAP 119 and the certificate of registration is registered under Registration No. ORS/102/35/19718, and it has 250 members on its WhatsApp group which was re-created in March 2018 and there is a committee of 11 elected residents who are their representatives. “Therefore the church has been causing stress, anxiety, distress and worry to the surrounding residents. Any pollution, including noise, is nuisance at law which is clearly outlined in the ZEMA and Local Government Acts. “We are aware that the church has appealed to local authority for their application for the Change of Land use to be considered. The community is in possession of a copy of the letter dated 04th January, 2021 from Lusaka City Council addressed to the church where it clearly stipulates that the stop order remains in force,” said Ms Nakazwe.

Seek vaccines procurement funding, African govts urged By SILUMESI MALUMO AFRICAN countries need to engage financial institutions to support Covid 19 vaccine procurement, Zambian doctors have suggested. Dr Patrick Kabwe a field epidemiologist said during the Zambia Medical Association zoom meeting yesterday, said it was important that all African countries accessed the vaccine. He said that about nine to 10 billion was needed to ensure the vaccine was procured hence the need to engage financial institutions to support the procurement. Dr Kabwe about 60 percent of African population was supposed to be vaccinated in order to be protected from the deadly pandemic. The field epidemiologist said African countries should,

therefore, ensure that finances were made available to procure the vaccine as it was critical to the citizens. He also emphasised on the need to ensure that many countries globally participated in manufacturing the vaccine so that it can be available to all countries. Dr Kabwe said currently only three countries worldwide were able to manufacture the vaccine. Meanwhile Dr Francis Mwansa an epidemiologist and national EPI manager at Ministry of Health said there was need to make information about the vaccine available to the citizens. He said by doing so, this will help people accept to be vaccinated. Dr Mwansa said this would help to vaccinate the targeted number of people to be vaccinated.

NAQEZ monitors schools for Covid prevention By NOEL IYOMBWA THE National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has embarked on a nationwide monitoring of schools to independently ascertain their readiness for opening amidst a deadly wave of Covid 19. NAQEZ executive director Aaron Chansa said between Wednesday the 20th of January and 27th January 2021, more than 2,500 NAQEZ members will physically visit more than 4,500 primary and secondary schools in all the 10 provinces of Zambia. He explained that the visits to schools by NAQEZ expects to find, among other preparations, availability and adequacy of sanitizers, infra- red ther-

mometers, running water and enough desks for the learners for social distancing . "Any school without the above items would be a serious danger to teachers and learners and after this monitoring exercise, the organisation shall immediately inform the nation of the actual findings in schools,” he said. Mr Chanda stated that it is now incumbent upon the Ministry of General Education to heavily fund schools in order to actualise the timely and important directive made by the Republican President over opening of schools next month. He said that without any financial commitment from the Ministry, the fear is that very few schools will be ready to open on 1st February, 2021.

DEFILEMENT OF A BABY IN KANYAMA DISTRESSES NGOCC By KETRA KALUNGA

T

HE defilement of a two-year-old girl of Kanyama compound by a 53-year-old man is a gross violation of the right to life, says the N o n - g ov e r n m e n t a l Gender Organisations Coordinating Council (NGOCC). NGOCC executive director, Engwase Mwale, described the act as a barbaric and evil act that has been received with deep distress by the women's movement. M. Mwale said it was

saddening that the evil acts have continued even after the sad death of the three-day old girl of Luwingu district. “It is inconceivable how a 53-year-old man can even think of forcing oneself on a twoyear-old girl. This trend seems to be continuing even after the sad death of three-day-old ‘Baby Queen’ of Luwingu district and many others whose lives have been cut short in similar circumstances,” she said. Ms Mwale said the NGOCC was disturbed at the increased cases of defilement cases. She said: “The in-

creased defilement cases, especially involving children, are symptomatic of a deeply rooted moral and psychological catastrophe in our country.” Ms Mwale however commended the alert members of the community in Kanyama who apprehended the suspect and handed him over to authorities. Meanwhile, Ms Mwale condemned, in the strongest terms, the incident in Mpika’s Chitulika village where a woman is alleged to have killed her husband, Julius Mwila, after a marital dispute.

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC

THE Socio-economic development of African countries has overcome various hardships and maintained overall stability, demonstrating resilience and vitality, says Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Mr Wang however said the Belt and Road cooperation between China and Africa, which has overcome the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and external interference, is covering most of the African continent and would surely have a brighter future. Mr Wang said as the world is facing more prominent structural problems amid the COVID-19 pandemic, African countries are eager to speed up their economic transformation and look forward to strengthening the Belt and Road cooperation with China, so as to break their bottlenecks in infrastructure, funding and human resources, and enhance their capacity for independent development.

He however observed that, during his trip, DRC and Botswana signed respectively a MOU with China on jointly building the Belt and Road, becoming successively the 45th and the 46th African partner countries to participate in Belt and Road cooperation. "First, with a focus on infrastructure construction, China will help promote connectivity in Africa,” Mr Wang said, noting that the completion of such Belt and Road projects as the Mombasa-Nairobi railway and the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway have greatly promoted the industrial development and resource circulation along the routes. And Mr Wang further said, China would continue to actively participate in Africa's infrastructure construction in such areas as transportation, energy and communications, and inject momentum into Africa's economic development. He stated that, China would further support the construction of Africa free trade area

and foster a large market between China and Africa, starting that China is more willing to share its development opportunities with African brothers. He further said China, stands ready to take the opportunity of China's construction of a new development paradigm and the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area to expand the import of high-quality African products, strengthen the connectivity of the supply and industrial chains of both sides, drive the Chinese and African markets to reinforce each other and jointly cultivate a China-Africa market boasting a population of 2.7 billion. Mr Wang who is also State Councilor said China would bolster cooperation in scientific and technological innovation to help Africa achieve leapfrog development and ready to share digital economy technology and experience with Africa and support African countries in catching up with the fourth industrial revolution.

KENYA TO CONTINUE PURSUING TRADE DEAL WITH US

Dr Anxious Masuka

Agribank restructuring on course, says Minister HARARE - The restructuring of Agribank into a land bank is on course and is expected to be completed by end of March, Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement Minister Dr Anxious Masuka, has said. Once complete, the restructuring exercise will entail that the bank would be able to provide investment support to A1, A2 and smallscale commercial farmers who have not been supported by commercial banks. Last year, the Government approved the proposal to reconfigure Agribank into a Land Bank to take up the functions of its immediate predecessor, the Agriculture Finance Corporation (AFC), which advanced short-term, medium-term and long-term agricultural loans to farmers. The new bank will be called the Land and Agricultural Development Bank of Zimbabwe. In an interview, Masuka said the restructured financial institution was expected to give farmers more comprehensive services such as mobilising private sector finance in order to contribute to job creation, food security and social security in rural areas. “That’s why we have reconfigured it to say it is not the responsibility of the Ministry to ensure farmers are taken from one point to the other towards this journey of achieving an upper middle income economy status by 2030. “But the whole Government

approach requires that Agribank as a financier be there to offer comprehensive services to the farmers,” he said. In addition, the restructuring of the bank is aimed at supporting Zimbabwe’s Agriculture Recovery Plan, which is aimed at ensuring food self-sufficiency for the country. “Very soon by March 31, they will now be called Land and Agricultural Bank of Zimbabwe and their model fits the financing of such schemes like the irrigation schemes in the country,” said Masuka. This is in view of the fact that agriculture, among other productive sectors, is crucial in realising Vision 2030 taking into account its contribution to the economy and to national security. The setting up of vibrant and diversified rural financial services, which are underwritten by a land bank or its equivalent, will be an important step which the country should take to move towards attaining an upper middle-income economy status by 2030. This is out of the realisation that smallholder farmers comprising communal, old resettlement, small-scale commercial and A1 farmers constitute 99 percent of the farming population, holding up to 95 percent of the productive land and owning over 90 percent of the national livestock herd. - THE HERALD, Zimbabwe.

AIROBI - Kenya will keep pursuing free trade deal with the United States during Joe Biden’s era, President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Tuesday. Kenyatta said the Kenya-US Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will build on the successes achieved under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) by ushering in better and bigger trade opportunities and prospects for Kenya. The President spoke when he bade farewell to outgoing US Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter who paid him a courtesy visit at the State House in Nairobi. “We appreciate what has been achieved through Agoa, but it is time we moved to much closer trade arrangements that are mutually beneficial. We will not lose focus on concluding the FTA,” the President said. On Monday, Trade Cabinet

Secretary Betty announced that the third round of negotiations for the FTA are set to resume in the coming days. “We expect to get into more rounds as the new administration settles,” Ms Maina said. Maina also pointed that Kenya is also engaging China on talks over Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) trade. The deal would allow Kenyan exporters to access Chinese market for products such as fresh produce. “We have engaged China to try and satisfy the SPS measures required to be able to export fresh produce to those countries,” she said. Maina said the government had protected the interests of Kenyan exporters when it approached the UK for an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which was concluded with a signing of the agreement on December 8, 2020. President Kenyatta thanked

nothing short of a food security and nutritional crisis,” WFP spokesman Tomson Phiri told a U.N. briefing. “This is a humanitarian disaster.” The attacks have forced 570, 000 people to flee, Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi said last month, saying he would defeat insurgents

SA wealth tax could raise R160bn JOHANNESBURG - An annual wealth tax on the net worth of South Africa’s richest people could raise as much as R160 billion and would narrow inequality in a nation where the most affluent one percentof the population own 55 percent of personal wealth, a study showed. The study, carried out by groups including the World Inequality Lab, of which Thomas Piketty is co-director, assessed personal wealth in South Africa and proposed a range of taxes on net wealth of above R3.82 million, or the top one percent of the population. South Africa is one of the world’s most unequal nations, a legacy of the apartheid system of racial discrimination that disadvantaged the Black majority and ended in 1994. The concentration of wealth is more extreme than in France, the U.S., the U.K., Russia, China or India, and has not decreased since 1993, according to the

study published Wednesday. Under the moderate tax scenario, about 350, 000 individuals would be subject to the tax, with the level ranging from three percent to seven percent depending on affluence. The top rate would apply to people with a net worth of above R146.89 million and would only be levied on wealth above that

Violence create food crisis in northern Mozambique - WFP GENEVA - Militant attacks that have forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes in Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province have created a humanitarian crisis, the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) said on Tuesday. “What is happening is

who stepped up attacks since pledging loyalty to Islamic State last year. Speaking ahead of a joint briefing by U.N. agencies yesterday, Phiri said there were limited supplies so the cost of food had soared, while access to water and sanitation was also impacted, as was educa-

tion. The insurgent group, Ahlu Sunnah Wa-Jama, staged its first attack in 2017. Known at first mainly for beheadings, the fighters declared allegiance to Islamic State in June 2019 and since then have increased attacks in scale and frequency. - REUTERS.

level. Raising R160 billion in tax would be equivalent to 3.5 percent of gross domestic product, the study said. “A progressive wealth tax concentrated on those most capable to pay would be a significant policy tool to finance debt reduction,” it said. It would spare the “most vulnerable households, thus placing South

Africa in a better position for an economic rebound.” South Africa’s economy is estimated by the government to have contracted by the most in nine decades because of the coronavirus pandemic. The study was authored by Amory Gethin of the World Inequality Lab, which is linked to the Paris School of Economics, together with Aroop Chatterjee of Johannesburg’s University of The Witwatersrand’s Southern Centre for Inequality Studies and Leo Czajka of the Universite Catholique de Louvain in Belgium. A wealth tax would face challenges, the authors said. Some rich South Africans would leave and others would find ways to circumvent it, and the amount of personal wealth targeted by such a tax could fall 30 percent, Czajka said in an interview. Still, the tax revenues would be considerable, he said. – BLOOMBERG NEWS.

FRA’S GOOD CORPORATE GOVERNANCE PRACTICES IN THE DELIVERY OF SERVICES Dear Editor,

W

HILE the various opposition politicians are on a smear campaign to dent the image of the Government, there are credible institutions which has implemented the Government policies in the manner that uphold public confidence. Food Reserve Agency (FRA) is an institution that has undergone a number of reforms from the time the PF took over Government. Lately, the Patriotic Front led Government has identified the agriculture sector as a viable alternative to stimulate and emancipate Zambia’s economic prospects. The Food Reserve Agency has been the key institution which has swiftly implemented the efforts of enhancing Zambia’s food security. The institutional reforms have been done under the tenure of FRA Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Chola Kafwabulula whose tenure has coincided with the Presidency of late President Michael Chilufya Sata and that of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. The good corporate governance model that has

been implemented at FRA can be emulated by other statutory bodies for effective delivery of public services. It is therefore imperative to conduct an appraisal of some of the reforms which Mr Kafwabulula has implemented through the delegated authority under relevant legislation, the PF manifesto and the Seventh National Development Plan among others key instruments. The principal function of FRA is to administer strategic food reserves as well as engage in market facilitation and manage the national storage reserves. Having identified the core mandate of this key institution, the reforms that has been implemented can be assessed. In order to effectively manage the strategic reserves, the institution has in the last 10 years has built the state of the art storage facilities countrywide. This has prevented the wastage of the maize from the bumper harvest in the successive farming season. Notable among the storage facilities which have been constructed includes in Masaiti and Lumenzi Districts. In order to complement this political will,

the Government under the tenure of Mr Kafwabulula has embarked on periodic maintenance of the existing storage facilities. As in December, 2020, all the storage facilities had the maize weighing 896, 000 metric tonnes which is unprecedented in the prePF era. Comparatively, 10 years ago, the storage capacity of FRA was 85 000 metric tonnes. In the meantime, there are ongoing construction of the various storage facilities which will permanently eradicate the prospects of the wastage of the maize grains. FRA is among the few public institutions that has been delivering services to the public at a subsidized cost. Even with a tight cash budget FRA has on a number of times proactively floated the cheaper maize to cushion any shortage of mealie meal and in some instances stabilizes the commodity prices. FRA has also been exemplary in the management of the financial resources which are allocated to it by the Treasury. There are a number of internal controls which have been implemented by the agency and the institution has prudently managed the resources

which it has been entrusted with. The non-incidences of Audit queries in the recent 2020 Auditor General’s report and the Financial Intelligent Centre shows the exemplary management of FRA which should be emulated by other State Owned Enterprises. The staff rules, the disciplinary code, the Public Finance Act among other instruments have been the documents of reference at all times. The procurement model at FRA has given strict adherence to the provisions of the Public Procurement Act and the acceptable International Standard procurement principles. The awarding of contracts has been done in an open and transparent manner which has virtually been malpractice free. We therefore wish to appeal to politicians to use FRA especially under the reign of Mr Kafwabulula in the last 9 years as model of running the state owned enterprises. Mr Kafwabulula has provided quality management has a ripple effect of public confidence in state owned enterprises. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI Youth Rights Activist Lusaka

Zambians are capable of running mines Dear editor, SOME of us grew up in an era where government owned most enterprises and you should not be lied to it was a wonderful era! Immediately one completed university and for example they joined the mines, a big house awaited them in Nkana East or any mining areas! ZCCM at its worst in 1990 made a profit of $180m!!!! Don’t be lied to that that was a lost era!! It was a golden era. The mistake that made in the 90s was just to sell for scrap our industries!! A company like Mopani that fetches over a $1bn was sold for less than $50m!!!! As a country we are not gangsters and can’t grab companies at will unless such companies are violating Zambian laws so it will be costly for us to buy back these companies from those willing to sell! Trust me colleagues, I have been very passionate about mining since birth because we grew up in the sector! Everyone who says we can’t run companies as Zambians should never apply for any job in a Zambian company because it’s pointless to give a job to a person that doesn’t believe in their abilities! I have seen some graduates say we can’t run companies as Zambians. Then what is the purpose of your education? Do you mean as Zambians we are inferior? Do you mean we shouldn’t employ you in Zambia because you are a failure??? I admit that those that were born post Y2K found nothing and never even saw an effective railway system for example. But we need to

understand our history very well and believe in our abilities. When we control our resources, we control our country. In Zambia we have some “renowned” people that make commentaries on the economy that have never praised any Zambian entity and always side with the foreign mines!! Those are bought people!! They are in the pockets of the exploiter!!! They should not woo you with semi wisdom rhetoric!!! These people are always praising the IMF and other foreign institutions but they have never praised trade kings or Yalelo! They have never praised Mahogany Air! For them, it’s about promoting their imagine to the outside world for the consultancy jobs aimed at looting Zambia to continue!! Before being looted, they use Zambians to do consultancies to check our weaknesses! We sell this country ourselves!! You can call us carders or whatever but at the end of the day, we only have one Zambia and we shall stand by it!!! For our stance over Zambian citizen empowerment, over protecting our image as a country, we are mocked, insulted and sidelined! All sorts of words are said to us but we remain defiant and we shall protect our mineral resources! Bad words can be said but we don’t worry because “Amashiwi ya chipuba, tayakalifya mutima”! Pessimists are already pushing rhetoric on how we should own Mopani!! They were the first to comment on the deal! Whatsapp was awash with negative comments from them. Yes maybe I personally might be uncomfortable with certain terms of the deal but overall Mopani is back as Nkana and Mufulira divisions of ZCCM IH! Zambians, we should guard jealously our mineral resources because “umulembwe wachipuba, upwila muli tumfweko”! LUBINDA HABAAZOKA God bless you

UPND MP, COUNCILLORS UNDER FIRE …L/stone residents angry By ANDREW MUKOMA

Mayor Eugene Mapuwo

R

ESIDENTS of Kamatanda Village in Simonga Ward in Livingstone have complained that area Member of Parliament, Mathews Jere, and civic leaders

have abandoned them. The residents alleged that the MP, Mayor Eugene Mapuwo, and Ward Councillor Peter Munyama had neglected them soon after their election as their representatives in 2016. Mr Geoffrey Nyambe Samba stated that, now that the election year has come, residents of

Kamatanda would be cautious of which party and candidates to vote for. Mr Samba said that this time around, the residents would not support the opposition UPND because they were fed up of being cheated. Other residents charged since 2016, the leaders they voted for had never fulfilled promises which they made to the people in the area.

They have charged that as a result, people had continued to suffer due to the challenges which they were faced with such as lack of a health facility and clean water for drinking. This came to light when PF Livingstone Constituency aspirant, Mutinta Matimba, held a public meeting at Kamatanda Village. Ms Mutinta reminded the people of Kamatanda on the im-

portance of working with the PF under President Edgar Lungu's guidance. She urged Kamatanda residents to work to elect a PF councillor, Mayor and MP so that all their challenges could be resolved. The residents alleged that since 2016, their representatives had never gone back to listen to the challenges they were facing.

Kazungula settlers cry for a clinic By ANDREW MUKOMA

G

OV E R N M E N T should consider constructing a clinic in Kamatanda area of Kazungula which will service the more than 700 households. Currently, the residents are accessing health services from Mandiya in Kazungula and Simonga under Livingstone. The residents are subjected to covering more than 15 kilometers to Mandiya and 10 kilometres to Simonga as the two places are the only nearest places where clinics are. Community representative, Mutafela Mutafela, said that in most cases pregnant women were most affected people as they were made to walk long distances to access health services. Mr Mutafela said that if only Government could consider building a clinic, people's cry would be a thing of the past. Another resident, Mr Geoffrey Samba Nyambe, requested those thpositioning themselves for possible adoption on the ruling party's ticket to help the community with iron sheets for the market shelter where people can selling their produces from. Mr Nyambe said that residents were willing to sell some of their farm produces but lacked a trading shelter.

Adopt more women, parties urged 10

‘PF GROWTH AGENDA UNMATCHED’ By NATION REPORTER

G Ms Siyanga

By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

A NON-GOVERNMENTAL Organisation, Women for Change, has challenged political parties that will contest this year's general elections to consider adopting as many women as possible. Women for Change Executive Director, Lumba Siyanga, said women were able to deliver and push the development agenda of the country. Ms Siyanga was speaking in an interview in Kitwe. Women for Change is an organisation that works to build the capacity of rural communities especially women and girls to achieve sustainable development. "A country that leaves out women in key leadership positions would not develop because it would mean that 51percent of girls and women Wednesday

are left behind," he said. Ms Siyanga advised women that would want to stand as candidates this year to start getting on the ground and make their intentions known. She said that they needed to get busy and show that they were able to represent the people in a proper manner. She observed that most women were in a habit of giving up when not adopted, a situation she said should by all means be discouraged. Ms Siyanga explained that there was no need for one to belong to a political party for them to be adopted. Women, she said, could even stand as independent candidates as long as they were well established on the ground of their respective communities. She urged the citizens to encourage and vote for women Saturday that they feel would work for 25 April, 2020 them and represent them well.

OVERNMENT has successfully ushered in an era of unprecedented development initiatives that will spur diversification of the national economy, says Kabushi aspiring candidate Tonny Mwape. Mr Mwape said in an interview in Ndola that President Edgar Lungu has put in place socio-economic policies culminating in infrastructure development, more investment in energy projects. He however said the global

slowdown as a result of Covid-19 had compounded some of the challenges. Mr Mwape said Government had introduced the Economic Recovery Programme to revamp and industrialize the agriculture sector and other critical sectors. He said he had decided to aspire for the Kabushi parliamentary constituency in Ndola because he wanted to contribute to the PF’s development agenda. “Good economic performance translates into continued tangible poverty reduction and wealth creation especially at grass root level. “This will be achieved with accountability and good per-

formance continuing to be the focus of the PF Government in order to effectively respond to current and future challenges,” he said.

“This will enable the electorate to appreciate the works of the Government and why they need to retain the ruling party to continue improving the welfare of the general populace,” He said as the nation prepares for the August 2021 general elections, it was imperative for members of Parliament (MPs) to highlight what Govern-

ment has managed to undertake. They should explain the benefits of such development projects and programmes to the heart of Zambians. “This will enable the electorate to appreciate the works of the Government and why they need to retain the ruling party to continue improving the welfare of the general populace,” he said. Mr Mwape said the President Lungu has on many occasions stressed the need for MPs and Cabinet Ministers to visit constituents. He pointed out that the PF Government would always be guided by three strategic documents,

GENERATORS

The following are the methods that can be used to increase the output voltage produced by a generator.

Learning Objectives § § § §

§ Increasing the speed of the rotation of the coil § Using stronger magnets § Increasing the number of turns in the coil

Define a generator Name the parts of a generator Explain how a generator works Compare the simple a.c generators with simple d.c generators

Example 1. Study the figure below showing a generator.

A generator is a device that changes mechanical energy into electrical energy. This simply means that a generator generates electrical energy. There are two types of generators namely a.c generator and d.c generator. The a.c generator generates alternating current (a.c) while the d.c generator generates direct current (d.c).

From the above graph, it can be noted that there is maximum voltage induced when the coil is horizontal. As the coil rotates to the vertical position, the induced voltage reduces to zero. This variation in the induced voltage results into the generation of alternating current which flows forwards and backwards.

The generator consists of the following parts: § § § § §

Simple d.c generator

Rectangular coil C-shaped magnets Carbon brushes Slip rings Commutator( split ring)

The simple d.c generator is also called dynamo. The simple d.c generator generates direct current (d.c). The simple d.c generator is made by replacing the slip rings with commutators. Therefore, the difference between the d.c generator and a.c generator is that the a.c generator has slip rings and the d.c generators has a Commutator. The diagram below shows a simple d.c generator.

Note that the slip rings are found in the a.c generator and the Commutator is found in the d.c generator. These two parts differentiates a.c generator from d.c generator. We shall now explain each of the two types of generators individually. Simple a.c generator

The simple a.c generator is also called an alternator. A simple a.c generator consists of a rectangular coil 7 between the poles of thePage C-1 of shaped magnets. The end of the coil are connected to two slips rings on the axle. The two carbon brushes press on each slip ring and through these carbon brushes, current generated is tapped.

(a) (b) (c) (d)

The generator works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. According to Faraday, when the coil rotates between the C-Shaped magnets, the voltage is induced into the coil. Thus the change of magnetic flux induces voltage into the coil. The induced voltage cause the current to flow in the coil. The graph below shows how the voltage induced in the coil varies as the coil rotates making a complete cycle.

The above graph shows that current generated from the d.c generator flows in the same direction. The commutator is split into two halves in order to ensure that current flows in the same direction.

ZIM FOREIGN MINISTER DIES FROM COVID-19

H

ARARE - Zimbabwe's Foreign Minister Sibusiso Moyo has died after succumbing to Covid-19, the government says. Born in 1960, the former army general gained international prominence in 2017, when he announced the military takeover that ousted long-serving President Robert Mugabe from power. Zimbabwe has recorded a surge in Covid-19 cases since the festive season. There have been 28, 675 cases and 825 deaths since

the virus was detected in the country last March. More than half of the cases have been since New Year's Day, Reuters news agency reports. The rise in infections has been blamed on people travelling from South Africa during the festive season. South Africa has seen a spike in cases after a new fast-spreading variant of the virus was detected in the country in November. South Africa has recorded the highest number of cases in Africa - more than 1.3 million

- and the most deaths - more than 38, 000. Moyo is the second senior government figure to die from Covid-19 in Zimbabwe. Retired general and Agriculture Minister Perrance Shiri succumbed to the illness last July. In neighbouring Malawi, President Lazarus Chakwera has taken personal blame for the recent rise in Covid-19 cases in the country. There had been a "collective sense of relaxation in adherence to Covid prevention measures among many Ma-

lawians including myself", he said last week. Malawi's Local Government Minister Lingson Belekenyama and Transport Minister Muhammad Sidik Mia died from the illness last week. Moyo died in a local hospital yesterday, President Emerson Mnangagwa's spokesman George Charamba said in a statement. Mnangagwa described him as a friend and a "true hero." "He fought his entire life so that Zimbabwe could be free," the president said. - BBC.

MADRID - At least two people have died following a blast that caused a building to partially collapse in the Spanish capital, Madrid. An initial assessment suggested a gas leak had caused the explosion, Mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida said. He told reporters a fire was still raging inside the building, which belongs to the Catholic Church and is in the centre of the city. At least eight people were injured in the explosion. An 85-year-old woman and a man were killed

in the blast, reports say. One of the injured is in a serious condition and has been taken to hospital, according to officials. Rescue workers evacuated more than 50 people from a care home next-door to the building in the Puerta de Toledo area of Madrid, but a nearby school was closed at the time of the blast. Four floors of the building were destroyed in the explosion, which could be heard in many areas of the capital. Images shared on social media showed billowing smoke and debris strewn along the street. – BBC.

Ghana opposition condemns court's election timeline ACCRA - Lawyers for Ghana's opposition leader John Mahama say the timeline for the court case addressing their concerns over December's election is unfair. Ghana’s Supreme Court yesterday set the date for the hearing of an election petition filed by the opposition seeking to annul the election

result over irregularities. All parties must file their witness statements by today and the Supreme Court will begin the main hearing on January 26. The Supreme Court said the strict timeline was to enable the hearing of the petition within 42 days as prescribed by law. But lawyers for Mahama ar-

Biden becomes 46th US president, vowing ‘new day’ after Trump tumult WASHINGTON - Joe Biden yesterday became the 46th president of the United States, vowing a “new day” for the United States after four years of tumult under Donald Trump who in an extraordinary final act snubbed the inauguration. Two weeks to the day after Trump supporters violently rampaged at the US Capitol to overturn the election results, Biden took the oath on the same very steps alongside Kamala Harris, who was sworn in moments earlier as the first woman vice president. Biden, putting his hand on a family Bible, repeated after Chief Justice John Roberts the presidential oath - that he will “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” “It’s a new day in America,” Biden wrote on Twitter before the inauguration as, in a sign of his push for unity, he prayed alongside congressional leaders at a Roman Catholic church. Biden, who at 78 is the oldest president in US his-

tory and only the second Catholic, took office amid enormous challenges with the still-raging Covid-19 pandemic having claimed 400, 000 lives in the United States. Central Washington took on the dystopian look of an armed camp, protected by some 25, 000 National Guard troops tasked with preventing any repeat of the January 6 attack that left five dead. The Supreme Court reported a bomb threat in the morning. Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, became the highest-ranking woman in US history and the first person of colour as the nation’s number two. She and her husband Doug Emhoff - America’s first-ever “second gentleman” - were escorted to the inauguration by Eugene Goodman, a Black police officer at the Capitol who lured the mostly white mob away from the Senate chambers in a video that went viral. gue that justice should not be sacrificed for speed. They had applied for a review of the court’s decision to dismiss their request for the electoral commission to answer questions about the process of declaring results. They had also applied for original copies of the statement of polls which contains

constituency results. Meanwhile in Uganda, polling stations have opened for the voters to elect city mayors and district chairpersons. Local media reported low voter turnout in the local government council elections compared to last week's presidential and parliamentary elections. - BBC.

Mali bans anti-France protest BAMAKO - Mali's authorities have banned a protest scheduled for today in the capital Bamako against the presence of the French anti-jihadist force in the country. The protest is not allowed because of the restrictions to slow down the spread of

Covid-19, Bamako governor's chief of staff Daniel Dembélé said. The ban comes after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France was preparing to reduce its military efforts in the Sahel. Macron said the arrival of

special forces from other European countries would allow France to make changes. This military presence regularly provokes expressions of animosity which have come out on social media and during several demonstrations in Bamako. Several leaders of the

planned demonstration are members of the National Transitional Council, the legislative body of the transitional period opened after the military coup of August 18, 2020 and supposed to bring back elected civilians to power after 18 months. The transition remains dominated by the military, which affirms its commitment to military co-operation with France. – BBC.

Uganda ex-Anglican Archbishop suspended for adultery KAMPALA - The Anglican Church in Uganda has suspended its former Archbishop, Stanley Ntagali, from conducting priestly duties or representing the church until further notice over adultery. Ntagali retired last year in March after 43 years in priesthood. In a statement dated January 13, on the Anglican Church website, his successor, Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba, said Ntagali had been involved in an extra -marital affair with a married woman which he had admitted. "He betrayed the office of Archbishop, his ordination vows, and the moral commitments he championed," Kaziimba added. Kaziimba said the church of Uganda was com-

mitted to transparency as well as pastoral care for those who have been affected by this situation and called for prayers for the spouses in both relationships, repentance and healing.

The Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America , Foley Beach, also issued a statement regretting the incident. "Stanley is a brother in Christ with whom I have ap-

preciated working beside in years past, and it grieves me profoundly to hear of this moral failure. It is my prayer before the Lord that he will continue down the path of repentance and that the Lord will comfort all those impacted by this sin." The retired Archbishop could not be reached for a comment about his suspension. But many Ugandans will remember him for commenting on what he saw as immorality in the country, in 2019 he was quoted in a local newspaper advising people to “control their sexual desires.” The Anglican Church in Uganda has an estimated 13 million followers. – BBC.

Leicester go top with win over Chelsea LEICESTER moved top of the Premier League by inflicting another damaging 2-0 defeat on Chelsea on Tuesday, to leave manager Frank Lampard fighting to remain in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have now won just two of their last eight league games to fall to eighth, nine points behind the leaders. Chelsea were expected to challenge for the title after a £220-million spending spree in the transfer market. But it is Leicester who are

threatening to recreate their heroics of the 2015/16 season when they shocked the world to win the Premier League. A second title in five years would be less of a surprise, despite the financial gulf between the Foxes and the traditional top six in the English top-flight, as they have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with since Brendan Rodgers took charge nearly two years ago. Lampard left two of his expensive summer arrivals in Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech on the bench, but

club-record signing Kai Havertz did return with former Leicester midfielder N'Golo Kante ruled out by injury. Kante was one of the stars of Leicester's title triumph, but Wilfried Ndidi has proved a worthy successor as a midfield enforcer and got the hosts off to a flying start with a rare goal. A well-worked corner caught Chelsea napping and even after Harvey Barnes failed to connect with Marc Albrighton's cross, Ndidi smashed in off the inside of the post from just outside the box. James Maddison then fired

off the bar and Edouard Mendy tipped another long-range effort from Marc Albrighton over the bar as Leicester dominated the opening half hour. Chelsea showed signs of life when Callum Hudson-Odoi fired into the side-netting and the visitors thought they had won a penalty when Christian Pulisic was upended by Jonny Evans. A VAR review, though, judged the foul had taken place outside the box and within two minutes it was 2-0 thanks to more dire Chelsea defending. - SUPERSPORT

Chipolopolo far from best - Micho By MICHAEL MIYOBA

ZAMBIA national soccer team coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic says the Chipolopolo are far from reaching their best despite having beaten Tanzania 2-0 in their first Group D fixture at the ongoing African Nations Champion (CHAN) tournament in Cameroon. Speaking in a post-match interview after the match at Limbe Stadium, “Micho” said he was not happy with the way the Chipolopolo played despite having won their CHAN opener. “Micho” said there is need for the Chipolopolo to adjust and focus on the crucial game against Guinea who are deemed to be a tougher opponent in Group D. The Serbian who dedicated the 2-0 win to the millions Chipolopolo soccer fans said the team will need to plan adequately to be more competitive for Guinea. “Our focus was on this match and now the win is for our supporters we now need to refocus and adjust to the situation when we play Guinea. “This is a good step but we are far from our best. There are so many areas we need to look at before our next match against Guinea,” said “Micho.” “We need to plan for Guinea. There is no opponent here who you can say I will beat them. You need to plan,” he said. And Chipolopolo midfielder Collins Sikombe who was voted man of the match said the victory over Tanzania lifted the team’s spirit going into Saturday’s game against Guinea. Sikombe said the Chipolopolo will shift their focus to preparing for Guinea who will provide another tough test for the Copper Bullets. Meanwhile, Tanzanian coach Ettienne Ndayiragije said Tanzania would not be discouraged by the defeat. Ndayiragije said the Taifa Stars can shine again and move past the group stages if they triumph in the remaining two games in Group D. Tanzania will take on Namibia in their next match slated for Saturday at Limbe Stadium in Cameroon.

NKWAZI FLY HIGH

…as Zesco and Napsa Stars suffer setbacks By MICHAEL MIYOBA and MUKWIMA CHILALA

Z

ESCO United bid to claim top spot on the MTN/FAZ Super Division table suffered a major setback after the Numba Mumamba drilled ‘Team Yaziko’ suffered a 1-0 home loss to Nkwazi in a rescheduled Week-12 fixture at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

A second half lone goal from Christopher Zulu who converted a penalty in the 57th minute handed Nkwazi a crucial win away from home. Nkwazi were awarded a penalty after Marcel Kalonda brought down Benard Kumwenda in the 18-yard box with Zulu stepping up for Nkwazi to put the ball behind the back of the net as the Zambia Polices-ponsored outfit collected the

three points. The win propelled Nkwazi to eighth position on the 18-team league table with 16 points, on par with Red Arrows who dropped one notch down the log. Meanwhile, Napsa Stars squandered an opportunity to collect a much needed three points as Forest Rangers twice came from behind to finish the match 2-2 in their rescheduled fixture played at Woodlands Stadi-

um in Lusaka yesterday. Forest Ranger's Cedric Djeugoue handed the ball inside his own box in the 41st minute as referee Rodrick Ngandu blew for a penalty which newly signed midfielder Enock Sabumukama scored from the spot kick in the resultant penalty in the 43rd minute giving Napsa an edge going into the second half. As the game returned from the break, Forest looked

more dangerous and got the equaliser in the 50th minute with Ameno Moro scoring from a set piece before Doisy Soko restored the lead for Napsa Stars in the 68th minute. The highly charged game was not free from drama and temperament as Napsa Stars midfielder Daniel Adoko was sent off in the 86th minute by referee Ngandu for a second yellow card. With only minutes left to

full time and the host side looking to collect their much needed maximum points Forest Rangers equalised through striker Webster Muzaza in the 90th minute breaking the hearts of the home fans. The draw left Napsa Stars still in the relegation zone in position number 16 but on 12 points with two games in hand while Rangers remained fifth with 20 points.
