Plot No. 5251B Mukwa Road, Heavy Industrial Area. P.O. Box 34553, Lusaka Email: dailynation@ymail.com www.dailynation.info

WHY IS HH LYING? WHAT is the United Party for National Development (UPND) president, Mr Hakainde Hichilema trying to prove by lying that heavily armed police searched his in-laws place in Shibuyunji? What is his motive for wanting to drag his innocent parents-in-law into his politics or ambition to get to State House with such a blatant lie? On Friday, Mr Hichilema posted pictures of police officers in some village where he claimed that a battalion of heavily armed police went to raid his in-laws’ homes in Shibuyunji in search of imaginary weapons. It is a blatant lie because even Lusaka Province Commissioner of Police Luckson Sakala is in the dark about such an operation involving his officers. In distancing the police from the claims, Mr Sakala wondered which police could have raided the homes to Mr Hichilema’s in-laws in Shibuyunji because he did not have any such information. Simply put, Mr Hichilema is just trying to attract attention to himself. But he is doing so in a wrong manner with fake news. There is a popular adage that “desperate means call for desperate measures.” When this is applied to Mr Hichilema, is he so desperate to win votes that he would go to any lengths to win sympathy? We find it strange that Mr Hichilema is prepared to drag his in-laws into his politics, who should actually be left in peace to go about their lives. Mr Hichilema is simply trying to alarm the nation with such claims and we feel the police should take him to task for making such wild allegations. Yes, we all realise that Zambia goes to the polls on August 12 to elect a new president, members of parliament and civic leaders. Along the way, the various political contestants are expected to go out of their way to market their credentials as to why they should be voted into office. But we do not expect any of these candidates to abandon the truth and resort to making unsubstantiated statements about imaginary situations. Mr Hichilema’s claims are not meant to promote peace in the nation but rather to create unnecessary tension. The nation has been speaking with one voice about ensuring that there is peace before and after the August 12 elections. While addressing the nation in Parliament recently, President Edgar Lungu pledged the government’s commitment to ensure the elections were free, fair and peaceful. But is Mr Hichilema’s behaviour in tandem with the nation’s desire for peace before and after the elections when he is whipping up so much animosity? He should be reminded Zambians are still in shock over the deaths of those two people shot in unclear circumstances when he was summoned for questioning at the Zambia Police headquarters. Mr Hichilema owes it to the nation to act as a leader and assume all the responsibilities that his position entails. He should stop trying to play the victim when he is the mastermind behind creating divisions in the nation. It is not just those in government who must ensure peaceful elections. Even opposition leaders must play their role. Zambians expect them to behave in a mature manner and show leadership all the time.

ZAMBIA’S UGLY CORRUPTION BLAME GAME By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE

I

N reference to the ex-Foreign Affairs deputy minister Gabriel Namulambe who said that opposition political leaders aspiring to be in power must not label those who are in government to be corrupt because they would be regarded as such when their turn comes, one gets confused that while their constituents grope around in poverty, hunger and disease, the opposition leaders, who are supposed to deal with these important issues, only care about their self-hyped flawless image, plotting schemes on how to malign their political opponents serving in government. The question is: If these opposition leaders continue with this pattern of stewardship, how long will it take for the people in their climate change calamity-ravaged strongholds get the basics of life? Their educated but unemployed youths are turning to crime, among other anti-social vices. These opposition leaders do not seem to notice this; they are too busy character-scandalising their opponents with unsubstantiated graft-accusations. What matters most for them is hitting the headlines in anti-government mainstream and social media platforms. Nonetheless, it’s good that Zambians are having more conversations about alleged corruption and the need to eradicate it from the country. It has been triggered by the recent revelations by the FDD president Ms Edith Nawakwi that UPND president Hakainde Hichilema’s conduct during the 1990s privatisation period bordered on theft of public resources and that he was lucky that he had never been arrested so far. She said Mr Hichilema should not stretch his luck too far as one day he would be made to account for the theft he allegedly committed. Followed up by the recent parliamentary Public Accounts Committee’s revela-

tions of the hearing on the US$17m drug supply scandal, the blame game being carried on by both major opposition political leaders would be laughable if it wasn’t so sad, self-serving and hypocritical. Both ex-partners of – the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) formed during the 2006 elections – as well as their cronies are guilty of corruption; that was, still is, plundering our financial resources and using the taxpayers as a feeding tree to enrich a few. Neither of the two ex-partners of UDA has the moral authority to call the other corrupt. In all fairness, both of them are jointly culpable and responsible for the billions of dollars which Zambia lost through corruption during the privatisation of state companies. The FDD leader was then Minister of Finance whilst the UPND leader was then Managing Partner at Grant Thornton and served as a privatisation adviser to the Zambian government. The Honeybee Pharmacy Limited’s scandal at the Ministry of Health is no more or no less symptomatic of corruption than the Livingstone’s Intercontinental Hotel privatisation scandal. The RAMCOZ receivership scandal is no more or no less symptomatic of corrupt practices than the Saturnia Regna Pension Trust’s inability to pay ex-BP employees’ benefits scandal or the Brenthurst Foundation’s campaign-bankrolling the UPND scandal. Cavalier politics practiced by both opposition leaders is corrupt, criminal and immoral. Ultimately the Zambian people are the ones who pay the price for corruption; in many cases with their lives. The privileged UDA’s sympathisers had previously benefitted from corruption at the expense of others in Zambia for many, many years, and continue to do so while giving lip service against it whilst they are in opposition. All they want is their turn in government to stick their snouts into the

trough. To end Zambia’s robbery and gang-raping by these parties’ zealots, discerning Zambians must maintain the political status-quo and change the ugly culture of evidence-lacking corruption accusations. To this end, Zambians must start with the constitutional reforms proposed by the National Dialogue Forum (NDF). They must enforce the laws at all times regardless of social status and political connection. They need a fair, just and equitable society built upon the pillars of merit, pragmatism and honesty. Zambia is too rich to be so poor and too beautiful to have such ugly politics! Yet, Zambia goes to the polls to elect the president, parliamentarians and civic leaders on August 12. Interestingly, as the general election draws near, the race is

turning out to be a battle of the flawless and graft-blemished contenders. Meanwhile, tempers continue to flare as presidential, parliamentary and civic candidates jostle for graft-free purity. “I am not corrupt!” each one seems to say as they forget that their real

Mr Hichilema

employer is the electorate – the graft-free people that make up the bulk of voters. One does not need to have a degree in political science to realise that opposition politicians are only hoodwinking gullible voters. They are pushing their personal agenda and fighting for their own survival. Let no Zambian voter be cheated by false claims and empty promises this time round. That begs the question: What are the electoral consequences of corruption? Known and unknown to many, democratic elections have been assumed to play a crucial role in curbing corruption among public officials. Voters, due to their general distaste for corruption, are expected to sanction politicians who misuse public office for private gains. Yet, empirical evidence is mixed, and it often suggests that the electoral punishment of corruption is rather mild. Recently, political analysts opined on why corruption might be tolerated by voters. Specifically, corruption is a complex phenomenon, often deeply-rooted in the cultural and political practices of societies. Corruption has been known to have a detrimental effect on tax-revenues, investments and economic growth, equality and poverty, and overall subjective well-being and life satisfaction. Moreover, corruption is said to erode political trust and undermine political legitimacy in a variety of institutional settings. Besides, corruption is also hard to define, because it is often entrenched in context-specific meanings. Albeit Zambians reckon political corruption to mean the misuse of public office for private gain, important questions arise. Does misuse signify that the act is a deviation from legal standards, from moral standards, or perhaps from both? Do private gains relate only to public officials themselves and their family or also to their party? Yet, Zambia’s ugly corruption blame game continues.

HH LYING - POLICE From Page 1 Lusaka Province Commissioner of Police Luckson Sakala wondered which police could have raided the homes to Mr Hichilema’s inlaws in Shibuyunji because no instruction was issued for such an operation. When queried on the matter as reported by Mr Hichilema on his Facebook page, Mr Sakala said he did not have the operation as claimed by the UPND leader. “Where did those police officers come from? Yes, Shibunyunji is in my province but I’m not aware and I never had that operation,” Mr Sakala said. On Friday, Mr Hichilema posted pictures of police officers in some village where he claimed that a battalion of heavily armed police went to raid his in-laws’ homes in Shibuyunji in search of imaginary weapons. And when contact-

ed, UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma declined to comment saying he was no longer serving in that capacity as all positions were declared vacant after the general assembly last week. Meanwhile, UPND presidential spokesperson Anthony Bwalya could not immediately comment on the matter as he was on the road travelling to Lusaka but promised to get back. But he never did.

IGNORE OPPOSITION DEMANDS – GREENS …no need to repeal Public Order Act, says Sinkamba

By IRVIN MUYUMBWA

G

OVERNMENT should discard intentions to repeal the Public Order Act because it was not an emergency despite calls from some opposition parties to do so, Green Party president Peter Sinkamba has advised. Mr Sinkamba said there is no need for government through the Ministry of Justice to repeal the Public Order Act but instead depend on the penal code whose offences are similar in nature. “You cannot push government to say bring this bill because there are several

K3m wasted in unused insecticide By OLIVER SAMBOKO MORE than K3 million public funds have been lost through failure by the Ministry of Livestock to use insecticide for the control of Tsetse flies and trypanosomiasis in Rufunsa, Luano and Nyimba, the 2019 Auditor-General's report has revealed. The audit report said 90, 000 litres of insecticide valued at K3, 278, 124, delivered in October 2017 had expired making the expenditure wasteful. "On July 27, 2017, the ministry engaged a joint venture of Share Mix Limited and Avima Pty Limited of South Africa to supply and deliver 425, 489 litres of Deltamethrin ULV Insecticide at a contract sum of K14, 420, 627 with a delivery

period of two weeks," read part of the report. The report also said the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock failed without any reasonable justification to utilise insecticides to control tsetse flies and trypanosomiasis in livestock and humans in the three districts. It also disclosed that the suppliers of the chemicals were also required to oversee the application of the insecticide in an aerial spraying operation, to control tsetse flies and trypanosomiasis but did not do so contrary to terms and conditions of the contract. The Ministry of Livestock also failed to account for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines valued at K1, 005, 397 meant for use and distribution

Let’s fight coronavirus together – MP hopeful By MARTIN AKENDE ONE of the PF aspiring candidates for the Kabwata parliamentary seat Danny Yenga has flagged off the disinfection exercise of all schools in the constituency. Under this programme, Mr Yenga is targeting to disinfect over 60 public and private schools in the constituency. Mr. Yenga said the exercise is to supplement the government's efforts in combating the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic. Speaking during the flagging off exercise

at Mkandwire Basic School where he did his primary education, Mr. Yenga said the fight against Covid-19 must not be left to the government alone but that it must be everyone's responsibility. He said the pandemic should not be politicised because it is public health issue. “Covid-19 is a public health issue and should not be treated as a political issue. We want to be part of the solution to minimise the spread of this disease. Of course we cannot eradicate it, but we can minimise its spread.” Mr Yenga said it was

During the period under review, 840, 500 doses of FMD vaccine valued at K3, 097, 100 and 100, 000 doses of CBPP vaccines valued at K183, 680 were distributed to 34 districts that were affected by the disease. However, a physical inspection of vaccines distributed to seven selected District Fisheries and Livestock Offices carried out in June 2020 revealed that 323, 000 vaccines costing K1, 005, 397 were unaccounted for in that there were no disposal details. It was also observed that Mongu Provincial Fisheries and Livestock Office did not have cold rooms to store the vaccines and relied on a third party for the storage.

important to disinfect schools in the constituency to ensure pupils are protected from the coronavirus pandemic. He has also urged the corporate world in the constituency to join hands in the fight against coronavirus. He challenged politicians to come on board to ensure the battle against Covid-19 is won. Mr Yenga said he wanted to be part and parcel of what President Edgar Lungu was preaching about in terms of delivering development to the people. He also hailed President Edgar Lungu for allowing aspiring candidates to get to the ground to appreciate challenges people are going through.

bills that have been pending and of course government has its own priorities. Even if they don’t bring the Public Order Act before parliament, we don’t think there will be any problem,” Mr Sinkamba said. This follows calls by the United Party for National Development (UPND) for government to bring back the Public Order Act to parliament for repeal with the view of levelling the political field. And Justice Minister Given Lubinda in response told Parliament last week that Government will only initiate amendments on the

much talked about Public Order Act after this year’s August 12 elections. Mr Sinkamba said instead, the government should focus more on other bills of great importance that should be tabled in parliament and have been pending for a long time instead of the Public Order Act. He said there is no need to talk about the Public Order Act which already has similar provisions as those in the penal code and therefore, the Ministry of Justice should completely do away with the act and focus on other bills in parliament. “For us we really don’t

Mr Sinkamba

think it’s much of a big deal whether or not the Public Order Act is repealed. Our proposition for a long time has been that we just leave it and operate with the penal code,” Mr Sinkamba said.

Nkana MP fumes over misuse of empowerment funds By IRVIN MUYUMBWA PATRIOTIC Front Nkana Member of Parliament Alexander Chiteme has expressed disappointment in the manner in which second hand clothes “salaula” traders at Chisokone market in Kitwe have handled the empowerment funds given to them. Mr Chiteme said it was very disappointing that even when Government was doing everything possible to ensure marketeers are not left out from the empowerment initiatives, the funds given to those at Chisokone market were mismanaged. Mr Chiteme bemoaned that some traders who were previously empowered were not investing the funds but

Mr Chiteme

pocketed it when it was supposed to be a revolving fund. And Mr Chiteme yesterday handed over 19 bales of second-hand clothes and roofing sheets to another group of marketeers at

Chisokone market to boost their business ventures. He also contributed K10, 000 towards the rehabilitation of the market shelter which he emphasised should be utilised accordingly.

Unions lobby for land for Mopani, KCM retrenchees By ROGERS KALERO MINERS who will get retrenchment packages at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and Mopani Copper Mines should be empowered with land so that they invest their money in agriculture and other sustainable ventures, Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) president Joseph Chewe has suggested. Mr Chewe said MUZ and the National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) had requested Government to consider empowering the miners with land because it was a life-long resource. He was speaking yesterday at Katilungu House in Kitwe during a media briefing. "We have seen how musicians and other artistes have been empowered and so we thought we should also make a request that those who will get retrenchment packages at KCM and Mopani be empowered with land,” he said. He also announced that Presi-

Mr Chewe

dent Edgar Lungu in his individual capacity would soon be giving out mealie meal to miners as a way of supporting those who were on half salary as a result of Covid-19 Mr Chewe said the gesture was initiated by the union after realising that among its members, some were struggling as a result of Covid-19, which resulted in closure of some mines. "Some of our members are strug-

gling to buy mealie meal because they are on half salaries, while others have had their mines closed due to Covid-19. So when we presented this matter to President Lungu, he promised that he will be giving the miners mealie meal in the next few months," he said. Mr Chewe said no one should think that the Presidential gesture was a ploy to win support because the union had every right to seek help from Government whenever need arises. "People are free to make the comments as they wish, but what I can say is that, Government recognises the union as a stakeholder and in the same way, the union will only seek Government's help when we have issues or challenges,” he said. And NUMAW president James Chansa said there was no problem in supporting the Government which had exhibited quality leadership and always listened to the cries of the miners.

COVID-19 VACCINE TRIALS UNDER ZAMRA SPOTLIGHT By KETRA KALUNGA

C

LINICAL trials on Ivermectin vaccine as an anti-parasitic drug will be closely monitored and regulated to ensure that it is not harmful to people, the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) has said. ZAMRA recently allowed clinical trials to study the efficacy of the veterinary anti-parasitic drug in the prevention of Covid-19, as was the case in neighbouring Zimbabwe and other countries. ZAMRA is set to work closely with the task force set up at the Ministry of Health to conduct vaccine trials to ensure that everyone involved in the study was protected. ZAMRA senior public relations officer, Christabel Illiamupu, said in an interview

that it would work closely with the task force to safeguard lives once trials commence. Ms. Illiamupu said ZAMRA would ensure that trials were done in line with the guidelines which included ethical assessments of trial subjects. “As we mentioned in our earlier statement, these stud-

ies are impending, they are impending studies to explore the efficacy of Ivermectin for treatment and prevention of Covid-19, meaning the studies have not yet commenced,” she said. She said ZAMRA would thoroughly assess applications from stakeholders will-

ing to conduct clinical vaccine trials in line with its mandate so that no one was harmed in the process. Ms Illiamupu said only those who meet the required standards in the clinical trial guidelines would be issued with certificates after proper evaluations. “The ZAMRA has stipulated guidelines that regulate the conduct of clinical trials and act as a basis for issuance of clinical trial certificates, some of the provisions of guidelines include, ethical assessments, insurance of trial subjects and good clinical practice,” she said. Ivermectin will only be used in approved clinical trials where participants will be closely monitored and generated evidence shall inform policy on the prevention or treatment of Covid-19.

Chief Mpepo says chiefdom no-go area for tribal campaigns By PETER SICHALI I WILL not allow tribalists to campaign in my Chiefdom, Chief Mpepo of Kanchibiya has said. Chief Mpepo said politicians should base their campaigns on issues that are affecting the people. Chief Mpepo said he will not entertain any candidate who would come to campaign on tribal lines.

"Those coming to campaign in my chiefdom should bring messages of development," Chief Mpepo said. He said his subjects are in need of development and anything bordering on tribe will not be allowed. Chief Mpepo said tribalism could bring chaos in the country. "Tribalism is what caused genocide in Rwanda, therefore it's important that we safeguard the peace that our

country has enjoyed over the years," he said. Chief Mpepo said Zambia is a Christian nation and it was important for every politician to observe peace. He said no politician will be allowed to divide the people by engaging in cheap political propaganda. And Chief Mpepo said there is need for Parliament to enact laws that would stiffen the lawagainst tribalism, regionalism and hate speech.

He said Zambians have for a long time since the introduction of multi-party politics been exposed to tribalism that risks creating disunity and must be dealt with before it divides the country more, especially at the hands of some politicians who are fuelling tribalism due to their involvement in petty politics instead of engaging in issue-base conversations.

WE WILL continue partnering with the Health Facilities to ensure quality healthcare delivery is enhanced, the Esther Lungu Foundation Trust has said. And the Foundation has donated assorted medical equipment and assorted food items to Chongwe District Hospital. In a speech delivered her behalf by Foundation Trust coordinator, Mildred Chumbwe, First Lady Esther Lungu noted the challenges that health facilities face in providing quality healthcare. The donation included: a suction machine, suction tips, assorted disposable theatre clothing, giving sets, surgical gloves, catheters, towels, Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and assorted food items for patients and the mothers’ shelter.

Ms Lungu stressed that the foundation had in the past five years made a number of donations to different health facilities across the country. She expressed hope that the donation would help the hospital to provide quality healthcare to the patients. And Chongwe district health director, Joseph Kabungo thanked the foundation for the donation. He observed that this was not the first donation that it had made to the health facilities in the district. Meanwhile, Chongwe District Commissioner, Robster Mwanza stressed that the government was committed to ensuring that universal health care was actualised. He was delighted to see organisations such as the Esther Lungu Foundation come on board to support the health sector.

Step aside, TSC chief told Mr Musenge said Mr Mhango’s continued stay in office will jeopardise the investigation as he could interfere and intimidate witnesses willing to give information to the Anti-Corruption Commission. By PETER SICHALI THE Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) has insisted that Teaching Service Commission (TSC) chairperson Stanley Mhango should resign or be placed on leave to paveway for investigations amidst corruption allegations, PROTUZ Secretary-General Kangwa Musenge has said. Mr Musenge said Mr Mhango's continued stay in office will jeopardise the investigation as he could interfere and intimidate witnesses willing to give information to the Anti-Corruption Commission. "When we appeared before the Parliamentary Committee, we were seriously intimidated and harrassed together with the BETUZ general secretary," Mr Musenge said. He said there was overwhelming evidence that Mr Mhango will intimidate witness. "When we submitted before the parliamentary committee that there was corruption at the Teaching Service Commission, we received threats from the chairperson and our fear now is that those willing to volunteer information on the alleged corruption at TSC will be intimidated," Mr Musenge said. Mr Musenge said there

were many teachers including those twho paid to get promoted who were willing to give evidence to ACC but would not be free to do so for fear of being harassed. "We are happy that ACC is investigating this matter but we are concerned with issues of intimidation therefore we are calling upon the TSC chairperson to resign or better still go on leave to pave way for investigations," Mr Musenge said. He said Mr Mhango should voluntarily go on leave if his hands are clean. The ACC confirmed it has instituted investigations into allegations of corruption in recruitments, promotion and transfer of teachers against the TSC. ACC Public Relations Manager Timothy Moono said they have received complaints against the TSC and has since instituted investigations into the matter. A union official recently told the Parliamentary Committee on Cabinet affairs that some officials at TSC have been asking teachers to pay for recruitment, promotion and transfers. Mr Musenge alleged that teachers were asked to pay between K20, 000 and K30, 000 before they are promoted to positions of DEBS and PEO.

‘Stop Nevers Mumba’s iilegal convention’ ….Registrar of Societies alerted over breach of MMD constitution

By IRVIN MUYUMBWA By JOHN KOMBE

DAILY

4

THE Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) convention slated for March 20th this year cannot proceed because there has never been any elections in the lower organs of the party to form the Electoral College, a group calling itself Operation Save MMD has demanded. And the group has called on the Registrar of Societies to take keen interest and stop MMD president Dr Nevers Mumba from going ahead with his purported convention next month in total abrogation of the party constitution. Addressing the press in Lusaka yesterday, Operation Save MMD Lusaka district chairperson Albert Phiri said the founding members of the former ruling party, are opposed to the planned convention as procedure was not followed. Mr Phiri said there have never been any elections in the lower organs of the party since Dr Mumba was brought in as president in 2012.

Dr Mumba

He said proceeding with the convention will contravene article 23 subsection (1) (2) a) b) c) and (d) which demands that intraparty elections in all organs of the party from branches, wards, constituencies, districts and provinces elect legitimate party leader “As true MMD members, we would like to challenge Pastor Mumba to tell the nation where he is going to get the le-

gitimate delegates to the convention since there have never been any lower organ elections in the party from the time he was brought in,” said Mr Phiri. Mr Phiri said it is therefore imperative that the Registrar of Societies takes keen interest in what is happening within political parties particularly the MMD and stop the anarchy by parties abrogating their constitutions with impunity. And Mr Phiri claimed that the founding members of the MMD are displeased over the dictatorial tendency exhibited by Dr Mumba on his illegal suspensions and expulsions of some members who he perceived to be political opponents. He said the final authority to expel any member of the party is vested in the national convention as per article 12 (2) and article 13 (b) (g). Meanwhile, Mr Phiri said the Zambia Police must also take interest because the purported convention slated for March 20 could put the security of the nation at risk. But MMD President Dr Nev-

ers Mumba has insisted that the convention will go on as planned because no normal member of the party would resist it. Dr Mumba in an interview with the Daily Nation also disowned the group objected to the holding on the convention next month, describing them as individuals picked from the street with no bearing on the party. Dr Mumba said such individuals are only masquerading as party officials organized by known people because records are there to show they are nowhere near the party structures. “I think everybody should be happy that we are going to the convention and if you have any sinister ideas, the convention is there for all to come and all positions are open for contestation. There is no normal member of our party who would resist the convention” Dr Mumba said. And Dr Mumba said he is not threatened by those against the convention because they are not party members.

SHOCK AS PROPHET DECLARES BULGING TUMMY NOT PREGNANCY

A

WOMAN from Kensington plots on the outskirts of Bulawayo, who thought she was pregnant because of her stomach which started swelling five months ago, was shocked when it was revealed to her by a prophet that her enormous bump was a result of witchcraft. The truth was much worse when the woman, Anesu Tswangira (20), who mistook the bulge for pregnancy, was prophesied on by Madzibaba Emmanuel Mutumwa of the Johanne Masowe weChishanu sect, who revealed that the swelling of her belly was caused by black magic. Madzibaba Mutumwa sensationally revealed that one of her husband, Mthokozisi Tshabalala’s female relatives who didn’t want her to become intimate with her husband, stole her two panties and alleg-

edly “fixed” them with juju. He revealed this on Saturday during a donation of mealie-meal to villagers, mostly the elderly, in Sihlengeni under Chief Sigola’s area, Matabeleland South province. Tswangira was among the people who thronged Madzibaba Mutumwa’s new shrine in Sihlengeni where he donated about 100 bags of mealie-meal. Things came to a halt when Madzibaba Mutumwa, who apparently sensed that something was wrong with Tswangira’s “pregnancy”, went into a trance-like state and summoned her to the front and prophesied over her. “What you’re carrying is not a baby, but you are suffering from a mysterious condition that led to uncontrollable swelling of your stomach which makes you think you are pregnant. You were cursed by one

of your husband’s female relatives who didn’t want you to be intimate with him (husband). It was after she stole your two panties which she fixed with juju. She stole the panties when she visited you and she hid them under a big rock behind your house,” revealed Madzibaba Mutumwa before he ordered four women to accompany Tswangira to her house to fetch the underwear so that he can burn them. A deathly silence engulfed the shrine a few minutes later when the women later brought the cursed underwear which the prophet ordered to be burnt as a way of removing the curse. In an interview with B-Metro a terrified and emotionally disturbed Tswangira said when the “pregnancy” first appeared she was excited and hoped to give birth to a baby within nine months. BMETRO

Traditional healer fails to resurrect dead boy A TRADITIONAL healer from Pelandaba suburb in Bulawayo tried without success to resurrect the lifeless body of a boy who drowned in a pool last week.

B-Metro caught up with Sithembinkosi Mafika (63), who is the late Paul Sibanda’s grandmother. She said after she was informed that her grandson had drowned in Emagodini pool in Pelandaba West she informed her neighbour Sibonile Mhlanga (46) who is a traditional healer. “We went to the pool and retrieved the body. He assured me that my grandson had not died, but he was just lying unconscious,” she said. A close family member who requested not to be named said: “Mhlanga convinced the granny that her grandson could be resuscitated. Mhlanga and the

granny took the body to a bush, Mhlanga prepared fire and burnt herbs while calling her grandson to life. But his bid to resurrect him failed.” Seeing that his magical powers had failed, Mhlanga

told the granny that the boy’s ancestors were not responding. “He told me that the deceased’s ancestors were reluctant to resurrect the boy and that there was nothing that he could do to resusci-

tate him,” said the heartbroken Mafika. After that Mafika reported the matter at Pumula Police Station. The body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post mortem. Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed: “We are investigating a case where a Grade Seven pupil drowned in a four-metre deep pool in Pelandaba suburb while he was swimming. “We would like to urge parents to always monitor their children and warn them never to play near any water body or at a water pool because they would be putting their lives at risk.” The granny said her grandson was doing Grade Seven at Ngubo Primary School in Old Lobengula. Man rapes step-daughter to fix promiscuous mother

A MAN from Emthunzini suburb in Bulawayo sexually assaulted his stepdaughter to spite his wife, who was allegedly having a sexual affair with a man in the same suburb. The man cannot be named so as to protect the identity of the 15-year-old minor. Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident. “We arrested a man who raped his 15-year-old step-

daughter at a bushy area near Emthunzini suburb. “The man told the minor that he had to rape her because her mother was involved in an extra marital affair with a man in the suburb,” said Insp Ncube. Insp Ncube advised rape victims to seek medical attention within 72 hours after the ordeal so as to get post exposure prophylaxis. “Post exposure prophylaxis will help in preventing one from contracting HIV

and they will also get medication to prevent unwanted pregnancy,” he said. A source said last week on Friday at around 6am, the pair went to Inyanda Farm to work in the fields in return for payment. While they were working in the farm, the stepdad told his step child that they had to take a recess and they sat under a tree. After a few minutes the dad said they had to look for firewood in the bushy area

and the unsuspecting child agreed. “While they were in the bush looking for firewood he said they had to rest under a tree. He then started to caress the minor and raped her. “After the ordeal he told the minor that he raped her because he was fixing her mother who was cheating on him with a man in the suburb,” said a source close to the family. - HMETRO

Dad slammed for being ‘selfish’ after ‘lockdown shop’ receipt sparks fury A DAD has been accused of being “selfish” after showing off his lengthy food shop receipt.

The man, Jay, known as @ jayandemalou on TikTok, attempted to make light of panic buying as he mocked his wife’s “lockdown shop” after the UK was put into its third coronavirus lockdown. In a video that has been viewed more than 2.3 million times on the platform, Jay can be seen panning down his Tesco food shopping receipt to the Star Wars opening credits music. He captioned the short clip: “Most men in the UK will understand. “When the wife says she needs a ‘lockdown shop’”. But whilst the video was supposed to be a funny jab at people who stockpile, users had received mixed opinions, with many people accusing him of “panic buying when you don’t need to”. “Lucky for those who can afford excessive shopping … Nice of them to be thoughtful and empty the shelves for those who

can’t”, wrote one person. Another said: “That’ll be all the wee pensioners going without now that the panic buying has commenced.” “Selfish comes to mind glad we are thinking of others during the pandemic,” said a third. A few people on the other hand critiqued what the family had bought. One TikTok user joked: “Am I the only one struggling to find a meal in that shopping?” Another said: “Glad you lot have the cupboard/ fridge/ freezer space for all that.” And a third said: “I love how it’s £200 of junk food and a box of Rennie” along with laughing emojis, while a fourth asked: “How many beans do [you] need?” Jay was quick to respond to a user who called him out, saying: “Show me the panic buying? That’s a family shop to last 4/5 days … we’re a big family stuck in the house … need plenty of snacks.” He then went on to say that his family “use local fruit and veg shop instead of supermarket” to buy their fresh food. - MIRROR

CASSIE SHARES HER COVID-19 EXPERIENCE By TERENCE MISELO

Z

AMBIA’S Award-winning actress Cassie Kabwita says she has learnt a number of life’s lessons after suffering from the Covid-19 which kept her grounded for over 14 days.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Daily Nation Lifestyle, Cassie said people must be cautious and believe that Covid-19 is real. “ I never expected to be among the victims of the disease as I used to follow all the guidelines but the truth is, the disease is there and it is real,” she said. “ People must stop thinking this is only a disease for a certain group of people, it is here with us and it is affecting everyone.” She said her experience with the disease was very devastating but she had to be strong to fight it especially that she is asthmatic. She said she has come out strong and is willing to share the lessons learnt from the situation. “The experience was very bad, trust me it is something I would never want to experience again,” she said. “ The lesson learnt out of this is that Covid-19 is real, it does exist, actually it is here in Zambia. This thing has come for all of us and we must take precautions.” Amongst the precautions, Cassie emphasises on exercising regularly, keeping an active mind, steaming and eating healthy besides following the laid-down preventive measures. “Take all the necessary precautions, Covid is real and it is here to stay so we need to learn how to survive in this new normal,” she advised.

Taylor Swift: ‘I’m the fourth Haim sister’

TAYLOR Swift has joked she is now officially “the fourth Haim sister”, after collaborating with the band on a remix of their track, Gasoline.

“Cancel the DNA test,” wrote the singer online. “I’m the 4th Haim sister and this song is the only proof I need”. The song appears on the new expanded version of the Los Angeles band’s album, Women In Music Pt. III. The Grammy-nominat-

ed siblings said it was their famous friend’s favourite on the original 2020 record. They noted how the new version had allowed them to “reimagine” the track. “Since we released wimpiii in June, Taylor had always told us that Gasoline was her favourite,” they posted on Instagram, around Friday’s release. “So when we were thinking about ways to reimagine some of the tracks from the record, we immediately thought of her.

“She brought such amazing ideas and new imagery to the song and truly gave it a new life.” Este, Danielle and Alana Haim then thanked the star - who recently re-versioned some of her own songs, as part of an attempt to regain control of her music - for lending her “incredible voice and spirit to a track”. Fans have been sharing the new rendition of the slow-grooving, brooding and lust-filled number widely since it dropped overnight. - BBC

School leavers must be relevant- Temwani By TERENCE MISELO

COMPLETING secondary school is not a passport to indulge in vices, school leavers can make themselves relevant by engaging in simple economic activities and charity work says 18 year-old school leaver, Temwani Zulu.

Zulu, a Lusaka-based young DJ and activist working with Andre Entertainments run by his father, believes society has evolved to a level where school leavers must not sit iddle at home but find opportunities to make them relevant in society. “ Some of the roles that I feel school leavers are supposed to play in society are that they should add economic value by either finding small jobs to venture into. Looking at the fact that the world today has gone the digital way, and soon all forms of businesses will not need people to be employed, therefore I would say they should develop a way of making money through their talents,” Temwani who is a former student of Likasa Boys Secondary said. “Those that are funny can go into Comedy or being a master of ceremony even at charity events.” Temwani says gone are the days when school leavers sat home doing nothing. “ Because of the coaching that a learner passes through in secondary school nowadays and all the available opportunities either voluntary or paid for, they should be able to use certain skills that they learnt in school to make money like making artifacts to sell, doing computer graphics designs, creating influential social media pages, doing small businesses or better still engaging in

charity work,” he said adding that he personally got involved into charity in 2016 when his father decided to take him to the Mwembeshi Correctional Facility on one of his charity events. “ Him taking me there was for me to just see how people live in prison and to teach me what happens to people who go against such and after going to Mwembeshi my heart was broken and I decided to go into the same route of helping out the needy and ever since 2016 to date charity is something that I enjoy doing,” he said. On his charity front, Temwani works under The Joy of Giving working alongside former Miss Livingstone, Loveness Hangoma. “What motivated me to go into that route was the fact that only a few people are doing such works and it is a privilege for me to venture into such events. All this came around because of the way my dad used to run up and down to pick up people’s donations for the prison and that made me realize that despite how many people make mistakes in life at times its not because they wanted but because certain things happen for a reason and that’s what has groomed me to put my hand into such.” Because of this, Temwani is organizing a big charity event on Youth Day. “ I want Youth Day to be a day that the children at Wons Ministries International Orphanage will notice a change in their lives and it’s a day I want the children to realize that they are not forgotten,” concludes Temwani adding that he and his partners will spend Youth Day at Wons and present various gifts and donations. He says he had already started mobilising the resources.

KIM Kardashian West has filed for divorce from Kanye West. The 40-year-old reality star has reportedly filed legal documents to end her marriage to the ‘Heartless’ rapper after seven years together. According to TMZ, Kim’s divorce filing states she is seeking joint legal and physical custody of her and Kanye’s four children - North, seven, Saint, five, Chicago, three, and Psalm, 21 months – and a source close to the situation has told the publication Kanye is “fine with” the custody agreement. The couple are believed to have signed a prenuptial agreement, and TMZ claims neither party is contesting the terms of the document. Kim’s divorce documents were

filed by Laura Wasser and reportedly don’t list a date of separation, instead claiming the date is “to be determined”. As of the time of writing, neither Kim nor Kanye have confirmed the news of their divorce. The ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ star and the 43-yearold rapper were reported to have hit a rough patch in their romance late last year, and it was claimed earlier this week that Kim was keen for Kanye to keep a constant presence in his children’s lives. A source had said: “He still wants to play a huge role in their lives and Kim would never discourage that ... He is no longer living at the house with Kim and the kids. When he sees the kids, he meets them elsewhere.” - IOL

T

HIS past Tuesday was World Wetlands Day, which is commemorated annually on February 2nd. This year’s commemoration was held under the theme “Wetlands and water”.

Wetlands are loosely defined as distinct ecosystems that are flooded by water, either permanently or seasonally, and include places like swamps and floodplains. Zambia has several wetlands which account for approximately 19% of the country’s total area. Eight (8) of these, including the Kafue Flats, Bangweulu Swamps and the Barotse Floodplains have been designated as wetlands of international importance under the RAMSAR convention on wetlands. In view of this, we had a chat with Mr. Mwape Sichilongo, Southern African Floodplains Regional Manager at the International Crane Foundation/Endangered Wildlife Trust in Zambia, who explained the key role wetlands play in our day-to-day life and how some of our actions are harming them.

Why are wetlands so important? Mr. Sichilongo says the importance of wetlands can be summed up in three key points. The first being that wetlands are of crucial ecological importance. He says, “They perform a variety of important ecosystem functions like providing specialized habitats where many plant and animal species that are adapted to their conditions can thrive.” He points out that some of these plants and animals are endemic (unique) to their ecosystems and cannot be found anywhere else. This is the case for the Kafue Lechwe, which only exists on the Kafue Flats and nowhere else in the world. “Wetlands are also home to large congregations of resident and migratory water birds. The Kafue Flats, for instance, are home to about 30% of the global population of Wattled Cranes”, adds Mr. Sichilongo. Another component of their ecological significance is that wetlands also support human life. “They provide building materials, like reeds and grass, used by local communities to build houses. Wetlands also provide local communities with essential nutrients from fish, plants and other animals”, he explains. Wetlands also help to regulate floods by absorbing

COMMEMORATING WETLANDS DAY WITH MWAPE SICHILONGO excess rainfall and are an important freshwater reservoir which supply water to larger towns and cities, like Lusaka. The second point is that wetlands are economically important. “They support agriculture and provide critical grazing land for livestock”, says Mr. Sichilongo. He adds, “Wetlands that have wildlife, such as the Kafue Flats, Barotse Floodplains and Bangweulu Wetlands, are also important for tourism. He reveals that in terms of fishing, wetlands like the Kafue Flats are of national importance. The Kafue Flats provides up to 20% of the national fishery requirement”, he explains. This creates employment and sustainable livelihoods for local communities and traders in big cities like Lusaka. Lastly, wetlands are culturally important. “In as much as wetlands are ecologically and economically important, they are also culturally very important”, reveals Mr. Sichilongo. “There are people and communities that live there, they perform ceremonies there, their livelihoods depend on the wetland and most importantly, their identity is associated with the character of the wetland”. An example here is the Kuomboka traditional ceremony of the Lozi people, which celebrates the movement of the Litunga from his palace at Lealui in the Barotse Floodplain to Limulunga palace on higher ground. And since the Kafue Flats hold around 30% of the global population of wattled cranes,

Zambians can be proud of holding this global heritage. What are we doing that’s harming wetlands? Wetlands are sensitive systems that depend on delicate balance, which can be upset by certain human activities. According to Mr. Sichilongo, the major threat to wetlands

across the country is that they are being exploited unsustainably. “Overharvesting of resources within wetlands is a serious issue”, he explains. “This includes overfishing and high levels of poaching for the illegal bushmeat trade, which compromises the availability of resources to the plants, animals and local

communities that depend on wetlands.” He adds, “At the moment, there’s too much poaching of the Kafue Lechwe for the illegal bushmeat market in Lusaka. As a result, the population of this unique animal is decreasing dramatically that in the last 50 years the population has shrunk by over 80%. He adds that the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW, formally ZAWA) is now warning that we deplete the Kafue Flats of all its Lechwe if we don’t change and regulate the way the Lechwes are being harvested, as provided by the Zambia Wildlife Act. Poaching is rampant across most of Zambia’s wetlands and in many cases, it threatens some endemic species, to the brink of extinction. What’s worse is that some methods of poaching like wire snaring and poisoning harm even unintended species. “Some wetlands are being drained for agriculture and people are putting up structures that are not conducive for wetlands, which means their ecological function is disturbed as they cannot keep water as they are designed to do”, says Mr. Sichilongo. He adds that another threat to wetlands is high levels of pollution from agriculture, mining and other industries, which compromises the quality of water in the wetlands. There is also evidence of overfishing in the Kafue Flats due to increased demand for fish, which is threatening fish population. Declining wet-

land quality and quantity has immediate and long-term effects on biodiversity and human livelihoods How can we use wetlands wisely? In 1991, Zambia became a Contracting Party to the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. To realize the much-desired wise use of wetlands and their resources, Mr. Sichilongo advises that, “it is important to work with all stakeholders in different sectors to define what wise-use means and to agree on rules and behaviors that will constitute wise-use, so that we reduce the current levels of extraction and exploitation which are threatening the Kafue Flats and other wetlands across the country.” To this end, the International Crane Foundation has entered in a 20-year co-management agreement with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) for the restoration of the Kafue Flats. The priorities are enhancing capacity for law enforcement, park management and restoration, and effective community engagement. The conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and their resources has immediate and long-term benefits to humankind.

WHAT BEING A DOCTOR AND DJ HAS TAUGHT ME ABOUT BUILDING WEALTH What you need to know: Summary: The fastest way to create wealth is to stop relying on your primary career alone Start a business you’re passionate about on the side. Find ways to invest in assets that accumulate value

D

R. PATRICK Mugonya Kihiu is a general medical practitioner and a managing director of the entertainment business, Cross Entertainment Sounds. He also works as a DJ I save my money through the acquisition of assets and the Sacco. I am a member of the Kenya Medical Association Sacco. Some of the assets I have paid significant attention to include land, which I buy both for development and speculation. As a young entrepreneur, I have had my fair share of financial mistakes. I have practiced medicine for five years. It was 2015 and I was aged 23. In my high school days, I had always dreamed of pursuing a career in medicine. My academic performance, especially in the

STEM subjects was impressive so medicine was my first choice. However, I knew that I would start an entertainment business somewhere along the road. I have always been very passionate about music. I started my entertainment business with about Sh250,000. When I was starting this business, I knew the exact type of service I wanted to offer. I started with a public address system, movable stage, lighting, and big screens. This incorporated end-to-end audiovisual solutions. Medicine is more of a calling than a source of income to me. When I graduated, I knew in my heart that I didn’t want to work in the fancy city hospitals. I would go to a rural area where professional medical services are hard to come by. Today, I treat and offer medical help in a small village called Kilungu in Makueni. While I could have made more bucks elsewhere, I wouldn’t trade the joy I get whenever someone who wouldn’t otherwise access medical services gets relief. I have a team that I have trained to solicit for business and handle setups for the entertainment business. I

then join them on weekends. My experience in employment and business has also taught me the value of multiple revenue streams. The fastest way to create wealth is to stop relying on your primary career alone. Start a business you’re passionate about on the side. Find ways to invest in assets that accumulate value. Breaking into the market and competing with established audiovisual companies has been tough. When I started, it was very hard to convince corporates and big brands that we could provide the same quality as other entertainment companies. With time, we have proved that we can do even better than our competitors and at more competitive rates. Capital has also been quite a challenge. Life doesn’t have a marking scheme. We are all different and have different purposes. Do what your heart loves, but make sure it is constructive and takes you forward financially, mentally, and spiritually. Above all, do not box yourself into one corner. Be versatile and go beyond your primary career to grow wealth. - DAILY NATION KENYA

CFLI, MEN’S NETWORK TRAINS 160 FEMALE RIGHTS ADVOCATES IN RUFUNSA By ARTHUR MWANSA UP to 160 people have so far been trained to advance female’s rights in Rufunsa District under the Canadian Fund for Local Initiative (CFLI) project. The initiative, Securing the Involvement of Men and Boys in the Advancement of Women’s and Girl’s Rights is being implemented by the Zambia National Men’s Network for Gender and Development (ZNMNGD). Females in the district have since welcomed the involvement and training of men and boys to be in the fore front of fighting for women and girls rights in the community. “We commend the CFLI for supporting this initiative. We have trained 40 men and 40 boys as promoters of women and girls right as a means of ending child, early and forced marriage. These advocates will reach out to other males on the importance of respecting women and girls rights. While the trained 40 women and 40 girls will sensitize fellow females to claim their

rights,” the ZNMNGD National Coordinator Nelson Banda has highlighted in an interview. The 160 female advocates have been equipped with bicycles, posters and T/shirts with messages on women and girls rights. Mr Banda has indicated that women are happy that males will now be the ones to spearhead the fight for women and girls rights. The initiative is further meant to influence girls that dropped out of school to return to school. Some of the girls that have been trained are those who dropped out of school. The ZNMNGD has noted with sadness that because of poverty some parents are forcing their children into marriages to derive financial benefits from the men and boys marrying their children. Mr Banda adds, “The girls are left with no option but to get married because some come from broken homes where gender based violence is a life style. They decide to leave their parents homes in order to find peace by getting

married. This is disturbing although the girls regard this as normal”. Most girls in the district fall pregnant and while others choose to get married at an early age due to lack of proper information about their rights to education, gender based violence and laws to protect them from child sexual abuse. The Coordinator said according to the girls, parents prefer to give priority to paying school fees for boys because they feel that boys are intelligent and cannot disappoint them as they can not fall pregnant. The girl child is left with no other choice than waiting for someone to marry her. The girls have however, recommended that working with men and boys and traditional leaders can help fight against child, early and forced marriage and gender based violence. Help without conditions Dear Editor,

SOCIAL MEDIA CAN INDEED BE A POSITIVE FORCE …Cancer patient Chama Musonda receives presidential compassion Dear Editor,

D

URING his address to the Fifth Session of the 12th National Assembly last Friday, President Edgar Lungu complained about the rampant abuse of social media. The President appealed to citizens to use their time productively, instead of mongering hate and malicious criticism on social media the whole day. “For those who are in the habit of social media abuse of any kind change; use your time productively,” the President entreated. His appeal was not in vain after all. Four days later musician Brian Bwembya, whose stage name is B Flo, rose to the challenge and demonstrated how social media can be employed as a positive force for the common good of society. On Tuesday, Mr Bwembya posted an alert on his Facebook page in which he appealed to President Lungu and United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema, among others, to help Kabwe resident Chama Musonda who has been battling lung cancer and urgently needed K60, 000 to meet the cost of treatment. Netizens responded to his SOS post like a swarm of summer bees. Twelve hours after posting it had garnered 18, 000 likes, 4, 000 comments and had been shared 797 times. And barely fours after Mr Bwembya had posted Presi-

President Lungu

dent Lungu responded with the good news on his personal Facebook page. “In the spirit of who we are as a people of faith, and guided by ethos of Ubuntu, I am pledging that I will meet all the medial requirements to cater for Ms Chama Musonda’s treatment as we all pray for God’s healing mercies,” he announced. The President’s post attracted a torrent of sympathy from the netizens, who flooded his page with warm words of appreciation and encouragement for Ms Musonda. In 13 hours the post had received 57, 000 likes, 16, 000 comments and had been shared more than 2,000 times. The few negative comments that found their way onto the page were quickly rebuked. Majority of the comments were positive.

Ms Musonda

One of the commentators, Sunshine K Kasuba, said Mr Bwembya’s post and the President’s quick response were examples of responsible use of social media. “Thank you so much, Your Excellency. May the good Lord continue blessing you and your family abundantly,” Kasuba said. Mukwima Timothy Chilala concurred: “Social media put to good use. Many thanks Your Excellency,” he wrote. “That is how it should be, Your Excellency. You have shown us that we must live for each other. Thank you for that quick response. God bless you, sir,” said Vincent Kabuswe. Bertha Musengwa wrote, “May God bless you. I have visited the Cancer (Diseases) Hospital. There are a lot of patients there. We have professional

doctors. Everyone there needs your help. Make treatment affordable even for us the poor. Thank you.” Nawa Paulsen Libku seized the opportunity to also send a distress call for his sister who is battling breast cancer. “Please, see this. Our sister, too, needs the President’s intervention, Mary Sangangala, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer,” he wrote. One of the few negative comments came from Christine Amanda Mushipi, who wrote: “Good move but I am not moved. Her case is one in a million. What about those who have not been published? Just ensure this treatment is affordable to every ordinary citizen, chapwa” But four people took her on. Henry Banda argued that government was seriously investing in the fight against and treatment of cancer and urged Mushipi to go to the Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka and see the efforts being put in the crusade against the disease. Mukela Yuyi had this to tell Mushipi: “I am moved because one life is being saved and this demonstrates assurance for more to be recognised. Journey is only one foot, then two then three… Just thanking the advocate for the love.” Mr Bwembya has commended President Lung for his prompt response to Ms Musonda’s plight. CHARLES CHISALA, Lusaka.

WHEN someone asks for help, just help them if you can. If you are unable to help, for whatever reason, be open enough to tell them that you are not in a position to help, so they can look for other options than waste their time having false hopes on you when in fact you won’t help. When you help someone, do not ask for anything in return, it is a curse, just help from the willingness of your heart and you will receive favour. If you want kudyamo for you to assist someone be open enough and tell them that you can only help them if they give you something in return than to pretend to be good when in fact you are not. When you help someone without asking for anything in return, you create a friend and you receive favour from God. You never know what tomorrow brings. The person who may be begging for money for transport, or for mealie meal, or for rentals from you today; a person who may be asking you to help them find a job today may be a person who may have more money and more influence than you tomorrow. Life is unpredictable. Nothing stays the same. Things change. Vintu vichinja. In life, anyone can make it and anyone can lose it. So if you are wise you will learn to help as many people

as you can because you just do not know who might help you or help your children tomorrow. Whatever you do, whoever you are, always remember these things: 1. As long as someone is alive, don’t count them out. They might be nothing today but remember, God is able to build anything and from nothing. The stone that the builder refused became the head-corner stone. 2. Masiku ni panyo pa tambala. Lelo si m’mawa. Things change. Not all days are Sundays. We have seen people, people who were stars become beggars on the streets. Whatever your position or possessions in life, do not ever become big headed. Lesa ni malyotola. He lifts the humble and humbles the proud. So when you have

made it in life, do not grow wings, you might end up injuring your self. 3. Every time you help someone who is really in need you create a brother, a sister, a friend for yourself and you receive favour from God. 4. No matter who you are, we all need help in one way or another; even the rich and powerful sometimes need help, no man has it all, no man is an island. Happy Sabbath and Godspeed! ANTONIO MOURINHO MWANZA, Lusaka.

Why wait for Presidential decree to do what is right? Dear Editor, THE directive by President Edgar Lungu to the University of Zambia management to ensure that there is vacant possession of the rooms occupied by former students is timely. From the onset, we wonder why the relevant institutions do not just do what is right unless the President steps in, in exercise of his parental and supervisory oversight over public institutions for them to do what is right. There are various institutions that have a tendency of waiting for the directives from the President. We will address these institutions in the course of summing up this write up. The presence of former students at various institutions of learning is a recipe for disorderliness as their presence becomes objectionable. We are made to understand that universities are institutions of learning and not a subsidised housing initiatives for the greedy former students. This is also a wake-up call

that the forensic auditing of the rooms allocated to students should be done so as to avoid the universities and colleges being recipient of Presidential directives for wrong reasons. We also request the institutions that are offering various government services to be proactive and resist attracting the attention from the President to compel them do what they are obliged to. We say so in the light of the fact that this is an election year and Presidential proclamations maybe misconstrued to be political even when they are not. As responsible citizens, we have taken note of the Presidential decree for former students to vacate their former rooms allocated to them. It is our responsibility to ensure they do not let the President down as such we will speak out whenever we suspect any Government institution undermining the authority of the President. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI, Lusaka.

M

BABANE - eSwatini's King Mswati III said he had recovered from Covid-19 after Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen sent antiviral medication to help him. The country, an absolute monarchy formerly known as Swaziland, is Taiwan's only remaining diplomatic ally on the continent, and Taipei has provided large amounts of economic and other aid. In a speech on Friday, the king said while the country awaited the arrival of vaccines, there was an antiviral drug that could be used to treat the illness, which he did not name. He said he had tested positive "for a couple of days" in

AU says Russia offers 300m doses of Sputnik V vaccine JOHANNESBURG - The African Union’s vaccine task team said on Friday that Russia had offered it 300 million doses of its Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine along with a financing package for countries wanting to secure the shots.

The Russian vaccine will be available for a period of 12 months starting May 2021, it said in a statement. The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which is responsible for marketing the vaccine abroad, said some deliveries could start in May but most would be from June. The 55-member AU hopes to see 60 percent of the continent’s 1.3 billion people immunised over roughly the next three years. But even as some wealthier nations are well into their immunisation campaigns, just a handful of countries in Africa have started to roll out vaccina-

the first week of January. "I am grateful to the president of the Republic of China on Taiwan for sending through this medication to treat me," he said, using the island's formal name in the speech posted on the eSwatini government's official Twitter account. "I do believe that my testing positive was to bring to light the discovery of this treatment. I did not announce it then but when I intended to mention it, I discovered that I was now negative." The king could have been referring to Gilead Sciences Inc's antiviral drug remdesivir, which was conditionally approved in Europe in

tion programmes. “We are grateful to receive the Sputnik V vaccines from the Russian Federation and tremendously proud to be able to offer them... for our AU Member States,” John Nkengasong, director of the AU’s disease control body, said in the statement. The AU previously said it had secured 270 million doses of AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines for delivery this year. Russia has marketed the Sputnik V vaccine globally. It has struck manufacturing deals with firms in India, South Korea and Brazil, and has pledged to supply doses to countries including Venezuela and Hungary. The offer to the AU, if delivered in full, would be among its biggest foreign supply deals to date. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron says Europe and the United States should without delay send enough Covid-19 vaccine doses to Africa to inoculate the continent’s healthcare workers or risk losing influence to Russia and China, Earlier in the week, Macron urged Europe and the United States to allocate up to five percent of their current vaccine supplies to developing countries in an effort to avoid an unprecedented acceleration of global inequality. Addressing the Munich Security Conference after U.S. President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Macron said the first step should send 13 million doses to Africa - enough, he said, to inoculate all its health workers. – REUTERS.

ANC in the dark why Police Minister went to Nkandla JOHANNESBURG - The ANC was not privy to the discussions Police Minister Bheki Cele had with former President Jacob Zuma, party Secretary-General Ace Magashule has said. Magashule responded to questions from journalists on Friday afternoon following his court appearance on fraud, corruption, and money-laundering charges. “I don’t know if he went there as a minister of police, I can’t say if he abused state resources,” Magashule said about Cele’s visit to Nkandla on Thursday. “He is minister of police, you can’t separate him from (being a) leader of the ANC.” Magashule said this in reaction to claims from opposition MPs that Cele had abused state resources to visit Zuma

Former President Jacob Zuma and Police Minister Bheki Cele. on ANC business, as Cele’s spokesperson said after the meeting that he would report back to the ANC’s leadership before disclosing details about discussions at the meeting. Cele is a member of the ANC’s national executive

committee. “As to what he went to talk to (former) President Zuma about I’m not privy to those discussions,” said Magashule. He added that the NEC had mandated the party’s officials to meet with Zuma, and he

said they have already “interacted” with him. “So that meeting will take place I’m sure once the necessary arrangements are being (sic) made. We will inform you that such a meeting will actually take place,” he said. Cele himself told reporters on Friday that he had a “broad discussion” with Zuma, but hinted that it was to prevent a “disaster” of violence. Acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni on Thursday hinted that it was about “law and order” and about the quasi-military displays by men outside Nkandla wearing camouflage gear. Tigray forces name terms for peace with government NAIROBI - Forces fighting Ethiopia’s mi litary in the Tigray region laid out eight conditions on Friday for beginning peace talks, including the appointment of an international mediator and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered air strikes and a ground offensive against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) - the former ruling party in the northern region - after regional forces attacked federal army bases in the region on November 4. Abiy declared victory less than a month later after the

TPLF withdrew from the regional capital, Mekelle, and major towns, but low-level fighting continues. Some senior TPLF members remain at large, though the federal government has captured or killed a number of former officials. TPLF spokeswoman Liya Kassa outlined the group’s preconditions for joining talks to end the conflict in a statement on the Facebook page of Dimtsi Weyane TV, a station owned by the former ruling party. Abiy’s spokeswoman and the head of the government’s taskforce on Tigray did not

respond to requests for comment. During the height of the conflict in November, the government said it would not negotiate until its efforts to restore the rule of law were complete. After declaring victory later that month, it has said it is focused on apprehending senior TPLF members who remain at large. Among the points made by the TPLF was a demand that Eritrea withdraw its forces from Tigray. Accusations of an Eritrean military presence are one of the most contentious issues in the conflict. Eritrea and Ethiopia have

both previously denied that Eritrean troops operated on Ethiopian territory. Dozens of eyewitnesses have said they have seen Eritrean troops. The TPLF also called for the removal of the interim administration appointed by the federal government as fighting raged in November. It said the officials elected in September in a regional vote that Abiy’s government called illegal should be allowed to return. In the region of more than five million people, thousands of people are believed to have died and 950, 000 have fled their homes since fighting began. – REUTERS.

with someone’s murder. When Nyinda and Kwenda appeared for explanation of the charge before Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri, they said they understood the charge read to them. Battery thief gets two-year jail term By MULENGA MUSONDA

A 32-YEAR-OLD who stole two car batteries from Choma General Hospital has been slapped with a twoyear jail sentence. Passing sentence, Principal Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo found it incumbent that Hastings Mwaanga sees the walls of a prison cell for his inconsiderate and criminal behaviour of stealing from a health institution that benefits everyone. Mwaanga was charged with one count of theft contrary to the Laws of Zambia. Particulars of the offence are that Mwaanga with another unidentified person stole two motor vehicle batteries valued at K6, 000, the property of Choma General Hospital. The theft happened on February 7, 2021 around 02:00 hours in Choma.

When he appeared for plea before Magistrate Mupemo, Mwaanga without coercion admitted the charge against him and begged the court for lenience saying his son had just passed to go to Grade 8 and he was under enormous pressure. According to the facts presented by Public Prosecutor Pearson Chilumbu, Mwaanga was apprehended around 02:00 after he was spotted under a hospital truck by some employees. Despite being a first offender and pleading guilty to the offence, Magistrate Mupemo in sentencing Mwaanga said his behaviour of stealing from a health facility that benefits everyone was an indication that he was a misfit in society. She sentenced him to 24 months imprisonment with hard labour effective February 7, 2021 when he was arrested.

Naomi Osaka wins 4th Grand Slam JAPAN’S Naomi Osaka cemented her place as the outstanding star of the women's game by beating American Jennifer Brady in the Australian Open final to win her fourth Grand Slam title. Osaka, 23, is unbeaten in major finals after a 6-4 6-3 win in Melbourne. Osaka edged the first set when Brady, in her first Grand Slam final, paid for some glaring errors in the final game. The third seed seized control from that point, racing 4-0 ahead in the second set before sealing

a deserved victory. Osaka has now won two Australian Open titles after also triumphing at Melbourne Park in 2019, with her other Grand Slam successes coming at the US Open in 2018 and 2020. She has not suffered a defeat since February 2020 after victory over Brady was her 21st successive match win. Osaka's face lit up with a wide grin, raising her racquet above her head, when she clinched the title on her first match point after Brady pumped a return long. "It feels incredible to have fans, I played the last Grand Slam without fans, to have this energy means a lot," said Osaka as she clutched the Daphne Akhurst Trophy. – BBC.

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

NKANA and NAPSA Stars will play their lungs out when they face Morocco’s’ TAS de Casablanca and Kenya’s Gor Mahia in their respective CAF Confederations Cup pre group stage second leg fixtures. Nkana who face the Moroccans at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca are the favourites to progress to the group stages having won the first leg 2-0 in Kitwe while NAPSA Stars hold a 1-0 advantage going into today’s game having won the away fixture in Nairobi. But despite having the advantage NAPSA Stars coach Mohamed Fathi who lost his father back in Egypt on Wednesday is determined to give the team a historical qualification to the group stage of the continental games. Fathi said the Pensioners are focused on picking another win over the Kenyans who were expected in Zambia early yesterday but failed to travel on time for today’s game. Meanwhile, Nkana FC coach Kelvin Kaindu has declared his charges ready to face the Moroccans despite having faced many challenges in Morocco. “Our first training we had to do it from a parking space because we did not have access to the training ground and the second training session we had to acquire our own training ground because t h e home team couldn’t provide a training pitch but so far so good,” Kaindu said. “There is a lot that is expected. We have a 2-0 advantage and it has never been easy for our teams to get positive results against teams in North Africa but looking at the performance we had we hope we will get in the field with a positive mind,” Kaindu said.
