Time to retire HH politically will be this year-GBM By NATION REPORTER
Nomination fees payment clarified By OLIVER SAMBOKO The ECZ has clarified that payment of nomination fees by candidates wishing to contest the August 12, should be done between May, 1st and 9th. This is contrary to media reports that all payments should be made four weeks before the election.
T
HE time to retire Hakainde Hichilema politically will be this year because the Patriotic Front is laying the ground for President Edgar Lungu to win the general elections, PF National Vice Chairperson for Mobilisation Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has said. Mr. Mwamba said the numerous defections of UPND members to PF in various parts of the country were clear signs that the ruling party has gained support. He said Zambians should expect an exodus of UPND members before the August elections because many were yeaning to join PF. Mr Mwamba said the
mobilization would not have any time for pleasure but continue to bring people so that the ruling party scoops the August 12 general elections. He said Mr Hichilema’s time to retire politically would be this year. “I want to tell the nation that this time around we are not going to have mercy on Hakainde Hichilema, this time around we are retiring him politically,” Mr Mwamba said. Mr Mwamba said the mobilisation team was on the ground ensuring that more people in both urban and rural areas rally behind President Lungu. He said Mr Hichilema would feel the heat because he had been abandoned by the people who campaigned for him in 2016.

THE August 12 general elections will be free, fair and transparent in line with the Zambian constitution and internationally accepted standards, President Edgar Lungu has assured. President Lungu said Government would soon start sending out invitations for the deployment of regional and international electoral observation missions to observe the general elections. He said the European Union delegation to Zambia and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) deployed an exploratory mission to Zambia from March 14-24, 2021 to assess the political environment and election framework ahead of the elections. President Lungu said this during the annual greeting of the diplomatic corps held virtually yesterday. He said the mission held fruitful discussions with various stakeholders who manage the electoral process in the country. President Lungu also said Government would ensure that law and order prevailed during the elections to enable people to freely choose their preferred leaders. He said Zambians have a
proud record of holding peaceful elections since embracing multipartyism and the government was committed to ensuring that the legacy was upheld. And President Lungu thanked the diplomatic community for the financial, technical, investment, material and moral support towards debt relief and suspension, disaster management, food security and the Covid-19 response, among other areas made by their respective countries. And in a vote of thanks, Warren Gunda, the Dean of the diplomatic corps and high commissioner of Malawi called on Zambians to understand and appreciate efforts the government was making in resolving economic challenges, and play their rightful roles, as the nation forges without leaving anyone behind. Mr Gunda said Zambia’s Economic Recovery Programme 2020-2023 would help the economy to pick up and be up and running very soon. “Tough decisions, would be made, but there is light at the end of this tunnel,” he said. And Mr Gunda said violence by political parties or whoever, must be condemned by all Zambians. He urged political party leaders to desist from manipulating the youth to adopt violence as a tool for influencing decisions.
THE NDC has expelled its vice President, Joseph Akafumba and Secretary General, Bridget Atanga and other officials who joined the UPND Alliance. NDC spokesperson, Saboi Imboela said the decision was made by the disciplinary committee on Saturday. Ms Imboela said the party would not allow any of the expelled members to masquerade as NDC associates. “The disciplinary committee sat on Saturday and decided to expel those members and central committee also sat after that to ratify the decision. Some have obviously received their letters, mail was sent to them. Those members by
tomorrow when all of them receive their letters, we will not expect any of them to represent our party in any way,” he said. MS Imboela said expelled members who would continue presenting themselves as NDC members would be reported to the police for impersonation. However, Mr Akafumba said the party would soon write to the Electoral Commission of Zambia informing them of their decision to stand on the UPND ticket in the August elections. He said contesting the elections as NDC was risky as the party had a lot of outstanding court cases. Mr Akafumba urged party members to remain focused as all the decisions had been made in consideration of their welfare.

RELEASE OUR MOTHER From Page 1
The family have since disputed the “withdrawal” of the appeal, stating that they had sat and decided to appeal against the High Court judgment. “The disappearance of our mother has sent my already sick young sister into depression and caused her to fall into a more serious condition requiring frequent hospital visits.” first born Abigail revealed yesterday. “From the time our mother disappeared, my sister’s condition has worsened and needs frequent hospital visits, which is very costly for me because I have no stable income. Speaking from Choma General Hospital where she had taken her sick sister, Abigail said the family has not seen their mother for a long time and now fear for the worst. “We haven’t seen our mother from the time she left and so I have been suffering alone taking care of my disabled sister. At the moment, we are at the hospital for urgent medical checkup because she has been vomiting pus,” said Abigail. She explained that her sister now in her mid-30s, was struck by cerebral malaria at the age of three, which left her disabled. “My sister can’t walk or eat so I have brought her for urgent medical checkup at Choma
General Hospital because the condition has worsened since our mother disapeared,” she said. Abigail also revealed that from the time their mother Pheluna left she has not been communicating with them to find out about the condition of the sick daughter and wondered what has happened to their parent. “My sister doesn’t sleep meaning she is always awake and so it means I have to also be alert at all times because I’m the only one remaining to look after her,” she said. Abigail called on well-wishers to come to the aid of the family and assist her sister get proper medical health care. Pheluna and her brother Milton have been missing after they appeared in a video denouncing their own court case in which they had sued Mr Hichilema over the acquisition of their farm. When the matter was ruled against the Hatembo because of the lapse of time, the duo were allegedly brought to Lusaka to denounce the case and further refuse to appeal the matter More recently, their brothers, Cosmas and Emmerson Hatembo complained that they had not seen their siblings and travelled to Choma to hold a funeral for the missing duo.

LOCAL TANKERS CHARGING EXORBITANT PRICES - OMCS By PETER SICHALI ZAMBIAN fuel tankers are charging more than foreign tankers as a result Oil Marketing Companies prefer foreign tankers. The Zambian tankers are not really owned by indigenous citizens but businesspersons from foreign countries.
Oil Marketing Companies Association of Zambia (OMCAZ) president Kafula Mubanga said Zambian tankers were charging $155 per metric cube when foreign firms were charging only US$120 per metric cube. Dr Mubanga said with the high operational costs that had affected most businesses, all were trying hard to work with-
in the most minimum costs available for the same output. “We are preferring foreign tankers because they are not charging exorbitant prices as the locals are,” he said. Dr Mubanga has also called for an audit to ascertain the number of tankers owned by Zambians. He said there was need for Government to audit ownership of tankers be-
3
cause most of them presenting themselves as locals were foreign owned. “Technically you will find that most of these tankers believed to be owned by Zambians are owned by Asians,” Dr Mubanga said. He said in as much as Government was keen to empower local transporters, benefits were not trickling down to the indigenous. “Can we take an evaluation and let Petroleum Transporters Association of Zambia (PTAZ) tell us who the real owners of the tankers are, because the fact that these trucks are registered in Zambian does not mean they are Zambian owned,” he said.
Electricity study time frame extended to allow for review By KETRA KALUNGA THE Electricity Cost of Service Study which was supposed to end this month has been extended to facilitate the review of the report, says Minister of Energy, Matthew Nkhuwa. It aims to establish the cost of different elements of services provided by Zesco Limited from powerr generation to wheeling and the cost of supplying different customers.
Mr. Nkhuwa said the UKbased consultants, Energy Market and Regulatory have asked for more time to facilitate for the review of the report by different stakeholders. He said in an interview that the extension period has been prompted by several challenges among them the Covid-19 pandemic and review of the report by various stakeholders. "They have requested an extension due to several challenges including the Covid
pandemic affecting the consultants and the review of the report by the different stakeholders," Mr. Nkhuwa said. He said however that the conclusion period of the report would not exceed the third quarter of the year. And energy expert, Johnson Chikwanda said the when done, the study would help minimise the mistrust among critical players in the energy sector. Mr. Chikwanda said the
document would foster an environment of trust in the industry because it would put to rest certain arguments and potential abuse amongst critical players. He noted that there has been a growing trend of blame-shifting in the sector and the study which aims to create electricity tariff benchmarks on the market would be able to address the challenge faced by key players in the sector.
INFRATEL AND AIRTEL SIGN A LONG-TERM TOWER COLOCATION AGREEMENT Lusaka: March 22nd, 2021 INFRATEL Corporation Limited and Airtel Networks Zambia Plc have signed a long- term tower colocation agreement that will allow Airtel to lease multiple installation ready towers across the ten provinces. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in Lusaka today with INFRATEL assuring Airtel of its continued service to avail telecommunication tower infrastructure to also expand capacities in already covered areas. INFRATEL’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Freelance Bwalya said in Lusaka today that as Mobile Network Operators (MNO’s) continue to transform from being communication service providers to digital service providers the need to leverage telecom infrastructure sharing was becoming stronger. “We are excited to have this MOU in place with Airtel and as you know Telecom infrastructure sharing always significantly reduces the time and capital requirement for MNOs to quickly setup and expand their coverage, “Mr Bwalya said. Adding: “Today’s signing is significant because this cements an already existing and growing relationship that we have had with Airtel, and it is pleasing to note that our part-
nership is anchored on shared values such as the promotion of use of Green Energy at tower sites and reduced environmental impact of tower structures.” And speaking on behalf of Airtel Zambia, Supply Chain Director Mr Martin Jowi welcomed the partnership and said this would enable the Company to focus its energy and resources on product and service innovation to enhance the customer experience for all Zambians. “We are delighted to be signing this MOU with INFRATEL today. And like my counterpart has said, this is a long-term agreement between the two institutions as we continue
to reach out to every corner of Zambia expanding our 4G reach,” Mr Jowi said. COMMITMENT TO PEACE BY openly asking international election observers to monitor Zambia’s August 12 tripartite elections, President Edgar Lungu has proved that he is a man of his word. President Lungu has been assuring the nation that the August 12 elections will be free and fair. He reiterated this during the annual greeting of the diplomatic corps held virtually yesterday. We feel this was an important meeting because it enables the foreign envoys get a clear picture of what is obtaining in the country than be at the mercy of misinformation posted on social media by some Zambians. The elections will not only be free and fair, but will be held in a peaceful atmosphere letting Zambians elect their leaders of their choice. But cynics have doubted his sincerity, claiming that the ruling Patriotic Front is set to rig the polls. President Lungu yesterday said Government would soon start sending out invitations for the deployment of regional and international electoral observation missions to observe the general elections. These are hardly acts that a regime that wants to rig elections would do. It would ensure that foreign observers are kept at bay. But because Zambia has a proud history of holding peaceful, free and fair elections since independence, President Lungu has shown that he is not afraid of having foreign observers monitor the elections. According to the President, the European Union delegation to Zambia and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) deployed an exploratory mission to Zambia from March 14-24, 2021 to assess the political environment and election framework ahead of the elections. It is important to note that the exploratory mission has not only been meeting with government officials but the opposition parties as well. All Zambians want a peaceful election for that is what they are used to. They want all the political parties to make a solemn undertaking that they will respect the election results as being the will of the people. Police Inspector-General Kakoma Kanganja has also promised to ensure that law and order is maintained. Mr Kanganja has also directed the divisional Commissioners of Police to engage the various political parties so as to iron out differences and reduce tension. The onus for having a peaceful election does not only lie on the party in power but the opposition parties too. They also must stress to their followers that they are also responsible for the well-being of the nation. There should be no rampaging youths of “storm troopers” reminiscent of Nazi Germany spreading terror among peaceful citizens to force them follow a particular political path. As Mr Warren Gunda, the Dean of the diplomatic corps and high commissioner of Malawi said at yesterday’s meeting, political party leaders must desist from manipulating the youth to adopt violence as a tool for influencing decisions. Peace and a prosperous Zambia is what all want.

Kambwili judgment set for May By CHARLES MUSONDA THE Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has set May 24, 2021 as date for judgement in a case National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Chishimba Kambwili is facing one count of contempt of court. Kambwili is charged for allegedly tampering with evidence relating to Mwamona Engineering and Technical Services (METS) Limited at Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA). This was in a matter for which then Principal Resident Magistrate David Simusamba sentenced Kambwili to two years imprisonment with hard labour for forgery and uttering false documents but the former Roan member of Parliament has appealed his conviction and sentence to the High Court. Particulars of offence are that on March 6, 2018 in Lu-
saka, Kambwili caused an obstruction or disturbance in the course of judicial proceedings by lodging documents at PACRA to alter details and records of METS, which were subject of active judicial proceedings. It is also alleged that the changes made were particulars of two directors Mwamba Chishimba and Carol Chansa, of which Mwamba Chishimba was changed to Mwamba Kambwili and Carol Chansa to Carol Chansa Chipande. Kambwili was put on his defence last December by Lusaka Magistrate Nsunge Chanda. In his defence yesterday, Kambwili said he was extremely shocked when he was charged with contempt of court. He said he has never been to PACRA in person to lodge any documents relating to METS and that the lodging of the documents was done by management, adding that he was
Lungu is forgiving - GBM By SILUMESI MALUMO I AM convinced that President Edgar Lungu has forgiven embattled National Democratic Congress leader Chishimba Kambwili who accused him of being a drug dealer, says Mr Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has. Mr Mwamba, who is PF national vice chairperson for mobilisation, said he was very sure President Lungu had accepted the apology because his is a leader who does not hold grudges.
He said in an interview that Mr Lungu knew that the apology made by Mr Kambwili was genuine because of the wrongs he did. "I am very confident that President Lungu has accepted that apology wholeheartedly. Mr Kambwili's apology is not a fluke, Mr Kambwili knows that his home is PF and not UPND. "UPND wanted just to use him. UPND also used me, they got what they wanted and almost got in power but thank God because the Almighty

In cross examination, deputy chief State Advocate Margaret Chitundu asked Kambwili when the said changes were made at PACRA but he said he did not know Ms. Chitundu then put it to him that according to the document before court, the changes which were made were filed on March 6, 2018. She also asked Kambwili whether he agreed with her that he first appeared before Magistrate Simusamba on March 6, 2018. In response Kambwili said he could not remember the first day he appeared before Mr. Simusamba because it was almost three years ago. Further asked whether he agreed with her that the material which was allegedly changed at PACRA affected the charges which he was facing before Magistrate Simusamba, Kambwili denied.
knew that if they got in power the country could have been in flames," he said. Mr Mwamba said Mr Kambwili did the right thing to apologise to President Lungu because the accusations were very wrong. “We all make mistakes, I have made mistakes before but if you don't apologise then you do not admit your mistakes, so Mr Kambwili has accepted his mistakes,” he said. Mr Mwamba advised Mr Kambwili to rejoin PF because everyone, including the President, would welcome him.

KAMBWILI BACKS SON FOR ROAN SEAT By CHARLES MUSONDA
N
ATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Chishimba Kambwili says his son Mwamba has a right to stand as a parliamentary candidate for Roan constituency on the opposition party ticket. Speaking to journalists at the Lusaka Magistrate Court complex yesterday, Mr. Kambwili likened his family’s political muscle to that of the Bush family of the United States of America. “If it is in the blood it is in the blood and he (Mwamba) is an individual and he makes his own choices. and he doesn’t live in my house. “He has his own family, he has given me a grandchild and he has a latitude
to make his own decisions,” Mr. Kambwili said. Meanwhile, Mr. Kambwili says he has never said that he will enter an alliance with the ruling Patriotic Front (PF). He said people’s opinions are not facts and that he did not want to comment on issues that are not there. He said there are a lot of issues surrounding the NDC and that they will only be resolved by owners of the party at the general conference either next or the other week. Mr. Kambwili said the PF has not given him an ultimatum to rejoin the ruling party.
Zambia ratifies Kigali amendment on ozone layer protection By SIMON MUNTEMBA
GOVERNMENT has ratified the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. The Kigali Amendment is aimed at tackling climate change by promoting the phase-down of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which have been found to have high global warming potential and therefore have high climate impact. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the phasedown in the global consumption of HFCs could save as much as 0.5 degree Celsius of global warming by 2045 while
continuing to protect the ozone layer. Minister of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection, Raphael Nakachinda said Zambia has become the 115th country to ratify the Kigali amendment to the Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. Mr Nakachinda said in a statement that United Nations Environment Ozone Secretariat acting Executive Secretary, Megumi Seki Nakamura has congratulated Zambia for having ratified the Kigali amendment describing it as “significant achievement”. “I am therefore elated to announce to the nation that we have become the 115th party to ratify the Kigali Amend-
ment,” Mr Nakachinda said. The minister thanked the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) for facilitating the entire ratification process and all stakeholders who made submissions to the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Lands and Natural Resources, leading to approval of its report on the proposal to ratify the Kigali Amendment. He stated that in fulfilment of Zambia’s commitment to the Vienna Convention on the protection of the ozone layer and Montreal Protocol on the Phase-out of Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS), on 29 January 29, 2021, Parliament approval the ratification of the Kigali Amendment.

The minister described the development as a milestone as the country continues to record huge reduction in Covid-19 infections as it tackles the pandemic across the country. In a press statement issued in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Chanda announced that 86 new cases were detected out of 4, 098 tests conducted, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded to date to 86, 535. He said Copperbelt Province recorded 21 new cases,
Luapula 18, Lusaka 17 Central 12, Eastern eight, Northwestern and Southern recorded four each, while Northern and Western provinces recorded one each, and zero cases reported from Muchinga Province. Dr Chanda said three new deaths were recorded across the country with two from Lusaka and one from Eastern provinces, bringing the cumulative Covid death toll to 1,182, with 651 deaths classified as Covid deaths and 531 as Covid-19 associated deaths. The minister said 61 Covid-19 patients were discharged from both the Covid-19 isolation facilities and home management, tak-
ing the cumulative number of recoveries to 83, 319. “The country currently has 2, 034 active cases, out of which 1, 910 are under community management and 124 are admitted to Covid-19 isolation facilities, “Dr Chanda stated. “Among patients admitted to isolation facilities, 90 are on oxygen therapy and 26 are in critical condition,” he stressed. He said the government places great importance on ensuring that the frontline health workforce remains adequately prepared and equipped to tackle the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and other disease burdens. -ZANIS

Indo-Zambia in K900m Covid-19 relief outlay By BUUMBA CHIMBULU
OVER K900 million has been accessed by Indo Zambia Bank (IZB) under the Targeted Medium-Term Refinancing Facility (TMTRF) meant to stimulate the economy amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) in April last year set up a K10 billion TMTRF aimed at cushioning the adverse effects of Covid-19 on enterprises and individuals, with the funds expected to be distributed for onward lending through commercial banks. IZB accessed K907 million under the facility for on-lending at concessionary rates to customers in targeted sectors, said the bank’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr Michael Gondwe. Dr Gondwe explained that the targeted sectors included manufacturing, agriculture, energy and tourism. He said this in Lusaka when releasing the bank’s financial per-
formance for the year ended December 31, 2020. “This was necessary to cushion the impact of Covid-19 on customers by extending repayments holidays, prudential reliefs, and fee waivers. “These reliefs unlocked resources that have proved vital for the survival of some of the country’s key industry players, saved thousands of jobs and ensured sustainability of the Bank’s upward trajectory,” Dr Gondwe said. Covid-19, Dr Gondwe said, had changed the world tremendously, affecting families negatively and having adverse impact on businesses across the globe. Meanwhile, IZB Managing Director, Kowdichar Shashidhar, was proud that the Bank was able to preserve its financial and operational sustainability despite shattered economic activity. Mr Shashidhar said the results reflected the Bank's efforts and commitment to the business environment characterised by the Covid-19 pandemic.

THE high levels of early marriages, early pregnancies and drug abuse among young people in Mukuni Chiefdom in Kazungula must be addressed immediately, the George and Rose Sikumba Foundation has advised. Foundation chairman, Rodney Sikumba, noted the urgent need for an intervention to curb the vices. He said the community, Government and cooperating partners should come together and find a lasting solution to the problem in Mukuni. Mr Sikumba was speaking when he officiated at the debate between the Mukuni Secondary School and Mukuni Youth Art Empowerment (MYAE). The debate is one of the programs the Board for the Mukuni Youth Art Empowerment has lined up in the quest to fight early marriages and alcohol abuse in the chiefdom and surrounding areas. He emphasized the need for the Mukuni Youth Art Empowerment board not to end at organizing a debate but continue engaging the communities on the dangers of the vices. Mr Sikumba challenged teachers at Mukuni Secondary School which starts from Grade one up to 12 with over 1,000 leaners and 56 teachers to work with the Mukuni Youth Art Empowerment. Earlier, Mukuni Youth Art Empowerment Chairperson Kachuzu Sibanje thanked the School for allowing to host the event within the school promises.

COUNTRYWIDE ROAD WORKS ON COURSE, SAYS RDA By KETRA KALUNGA
T
HE rehabilitation of several roads countrywide is progressing well after Government released K66 million towards the works, the Road Development Agency (RDA) has said. RDA Director for Communications and Corporate Affairs, Masuzyo Ndhlovu, said the ongoing repair works were aimed at keeping the wheels of the economy running. Mr Ndhlovu said in an interview that works focused more on vulnerable sections and structures of the road network.
Mr Ndhlovu
"These are ongoing works being done countrywide and we are currently making roads in Lusaka with pothole, this is being done," he said. Mr Ndhlovu said RDA has this rainy season been carrying out emergency works to mitigate any potential damage to infrastructure that would likely cause disruption to supply, delivery, and movement of goods and services. He said the government through the National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) has been releasing funds towards road repairs across the country which is undertaken by RDA in conjunction with other stakeholders among them, the Zambia National Service and the local authorities. Mr. Ndhlovu said during the 2019/2020 rainy season, the government released about K213 million to work on about 75 bridges that were washed away by flash floods in various parts of the country including and damaged road sections.
These are ongoing works being done countrywide and we are currently making roads in Lusaka with pothole, this is being done.

COVID ‘DOWNS’ KQ …National carrier blames record $332m loss on Covid-19
N
AIROBI - Kenya Airways has made a record net loss of US$332m in 2020, compared to US$118 million the previous year. The 179 percent increase in loss has been attributed to a complete shutdown in international air travel due to the
Covid-19 pandemic. The national carrier reported that passenger numbers reduced by 65.7 percent to 1.8 million in the reported year, leading to a $473m loss in revenue. “The Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 was beyond anyone’s prediction and its impact on
the industry is expected to continue affecting air travel demand for the next two to three years,” said the airline's chairman Michael Joseph. The airline laid off 650 workers last year, put the remaining staff on pay cuts, sold assets and redirected some passenger planes to cargo
business. The International Air Transport Association predicts that African airlines could lose up to $6 billion in revenues, affecting 172, 000 aviation sector jobs in 2020. Meanwhile, the government’s fear of having the National Aviation Management Bill 2020 shot down by MPs

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is set to keep interest rates at record lows when it meets this week. This is according to Finder’s repo rate forecast report, which polled 25 economists who voted unanimously in favour of yet another hold at 3.5 percent. Nedbank chief economist Nicola Weimar believes the bank has achieved the “Goldilocks” of monetary policy and it is now a matter of waiting for previously-set policies to take effect. “Hiking now would not make sense since inflation is well contained and the economy is still operating well below potential. Cutting would also not be wise as the SARB has already
done enough, the actual rate is below the neutral rate. “So Monetary Policy is stimulatory enough. It is now just a case of waiting for the policy to impact on the economy – become a stimulus rather than a cushion against tough times.” While the majority of panellists (88 percent) think the bank will and should hold the rate, a small minority (12 percent) believe that the committee should cut rates. IQ Business chief economist Sifiso Skenjana called for a 25 basis points cut. “While we are reporting a better than expected revenue shortfall, the contribution was largely on the back of a mining earnings growth and not a stabilising economic growth context. -BUSINESSTECH.

HARARE - Telecel Zimbabwe, the country’s smallest mobile telecoms firm, intends to raise fresh capital as it looks to finance expansion of its network, chairman Selby Hwacha said. For many years, shareholding squabbles have stifled growth and caused severe disruptions in services. “There are a couple of initiatives to raise capital,” Hwacha said in an interview. “Telecel is a very attractive proposition. It is the least borrowed network; it’s easier to get into a relationship with us. “That makes it attractive for equity adjustments,
joint ventures, lending but I can’t get into specifics because of non-disclosure expectations.” Telecel Zimbabwe is 60 percent owned by Telecel International, a wholly owned State-owned vehicle while the remainder is owned by Empowerment Corporation, a local consortium comprising various indigenous groups. Telecel Zimbabwe, has for many years been in a self-destruct mode due to endless squabbles among shareholders in Empowerment Corporation largely between Dr Jane Mutasa and Dr James Makamba. – THE HERALD, Zimbabwe.

Mr Kafimbwa said he was hoping that the illegal miners would cooperate with the emerald mining company. “I think we can benefit from the mining companies on various ways which include corporate social responsibility programmes. Lusaka family put on defence for assault By CHARLES MUSONDA AN Immigration officer and his four relatives have been found with a case to answer for assaulting his then girlfriend’s uncle after a dispute between the two families. Before Lusaka Chief Resident Magistrate Lameck Mwale yesterday were the Immigration officer Muleta Mutemwa and his relatives Nora Mutemwa, Francina Mutemwa, Goldwin Lufumba, and Mary Mazeze. The five have been charged with assaulting Chrisantius Changwereza, the uncle of Mutemwa’s then girlfriend Elizabeth Mulenga in July 2019. In his ruling, Mr. Mwale said the State had adduced enough evidence to sufficiently put each of the accused persons on their defence. After the ruling, the accused persons informed the court that they will not call any witness in their defence. Magistrate Mwale then told them that according to Section 209 of the Criminal Procedure Code, a person
who has been found with a case to answer and does not call any witness shall testify there and then, after which he adjourned the case to April 12, 2021 for their defence. Testifying as a last prosecution witness, Ms. Mulenga, 24, a teacher, said the accused persons assaulted Mr. Changwereza following a dispute between her family and Muleta’s relatives. She said the incident happened in Chilenje South after Muleta spent a night with her at a named lodge. Ms. Mulenga said the accused persons used fists, kicks, and cooking sticks to assault the victim. She said she was at the scene when the incident happened and that she could not do anything as they attempted to beat her as well. She said after assaulting Mr. Changwereza, they carried him outside the gate and when she followed they pushed her inside the yard. Ms. Mulenga said after the incident, she observed that her uncle had a swollen forehead, blood stains and complained of chest pains, after which he was admitted to the hospital.

Aspiring candidates inspires UPND defectors By ROGERS KALERO
WE were inspired to defect from the opposition UPND to the ruling Patriotic Front (Pf) by Chimwemwe constituency aspiring candidate Allen Banda and we now pledge allegiance to all party structures in the ruling party so that together we can set the stage to dismantle the opposition party in the constituency, former UPND Chimwemwe constituency chairperson for administration Kennedy Nyambe has said. Mr Nyambe said Mr Banda was instrumental in persuading the former UPND members to join the ruling party and had demonstrated that he was a leader with a gentle and caring heart. Mr Nyambe was speaking in an interview at the weekend after more than 300 UPND members defected to the ruling party at unique park in Kawama KCC area of Chimwemwe constituency . The defectors were welcomed by Kitwe district Patriotic Front chairman Evaristo Chilufya and constituency officials . Mr Nyambe said Mr Banda had persuaded and convinced them to join the Patriotic Front because he was a calm person and ready to discuss various issues affecting the
people in various wards of the constituency. He said , apart from being a calm and caring leader, Mr Banda also convinced them that President Edgar Lungu meant well for this country unlike some opposition leaders who thrive on lies , falsehoods and propaganda . “Well, I can’t say much, but to stress the point that the humility, caring and responsible character of Mr Banda has actually inspired us, to join the ruling patriotic front. He had time for us and ensure that we discussed various issues affecting the youths. As youths we pledge to support and respect him and other party structure of the Patriotic Front. “We will also work together to dismantle the UPND and defend President Edgar Lungu because he is a humble person who deserves to be defended by his youths from unfair criticisms ,” Mr nyambe said And when asked for a comment, Mr Banda said he will remain focused on winning hearts of the opposition members and officials to ensure increased numbers for the PF and President Lungu in the August elections. Mr Banda said the most important thing was for all the PF members to join efforts and work on various wining ways for the party.

NO MORE FIGHTS WITH COPS - UPND By SANFROSSA MANYINDA
THE United Party for National Development (UPND) on the Copperbelt has advised youths to avoid fights with the police but stand the pressure as the country heads to the August 12 general election. However, the party advised the youth to refuse to be intimidated but continue working hard in mobilising the UPND in the province. UPND Copperbelt youth chairman, Daniel Kamenga, said only sweat and sacrifice would save the country from
mismanagement. Mr Kamenga was speaking following the scene that took place in Kitwe on March 12, this year during Youth Day when UPND youths fought running battles with police leading to 31 arrests. “I understand the difficulties you go through and I can assure you that the party leadership in the province through our provincial chairman, Mr Elisha Matambo will always be there to offer support. “Be brave enough to stand the pressure and suppression from this brutal regime as we
approach election day,” he said. He advised the youth to be strong enough to not clash with the men and women in uniform who he said would want to intimidate and silence certain individuals. Mr Kamenga called on the youth to come together as a united force not to succumb to pressure till a time they would put UPND Alliance in government. He also appealed to the police to apply the law fairly without looking at faces and political affiliations when dealing with such matters.

SUBJECT: ENGLISH LANGUAGE TOPIC: STRUCTURE SUB-TOPIC: TENSES LESSON #1: The Present Simple Tense TEACHER: Anthony Simukonde
The Present Simple Tense (also called the simple present tense) The Present Simple Tense is used a lot in English. Therefore, it is really important to understand it well. Many learners have challenges with the form (or how to make it). Simple present tense with 'be' The verb 'be' is different from the other verbs in this tense. Let us take a look at 'be' first: Here is the positive form (positive means a normal sentence, not a negative or a question. This is sometimes called 'affirmative') Positive Positive Short Form I am I'm you are you're he is he's she is she's it is it's we are we're they are they're Next, here is the negative. We only add 'not'. Negative Negative short form I am not I'm not you are not you aren't he is not he isn't she is not she isn't it is not it isn't we are not we aren't they are not they aren't Finally, let us consider the question form of the present simple with 'be'. Firstly, here's the 'yes / no' question form: Yes / No Questions am I ? are you ? is he ? is she ? is it ? are we ? are they ?
Daily Nation, Educating Zambia!
If you would like to make a 'wh' question, you just put the question word at the front: Wh- Questions where am I ? what are you ? why is he ? who is she ? when are we ? how are they ? Present simple tense with other verbs With all other verbs, we make the present simple in the same way. The positive is really easy. It is just the verb with an extra 's' if the subject is 'he', 'she', or 'it'. Consider the verb 'write', for example: Positive (of 'write') I write you write he writes she writes it writes we write they write Points to Note: » NEVER forget the 's'! » For a few verbs, there is a spelling change before the 's'. For example, 'study' becomes 'studies'. » There are also few verbs which are irregular in the present simple: 1. 'have' becomes 'has' 2. 'do' becomes 'does' 3. 'go' becomes 'goes' To make the negative form, you need to use 'do not' (don't) or ' does not' (doesn't). Negative (of 'write') I do not write you do not write he does not write she does not write it does not write we do not play they do not write
I don't write you don't write he doesn't write she doesn't write it doesn't write we don't write they don't write
The question form of the present simple tense We use 'do' or 'does' before the subject to make the 'yes / no' question: Yes / No questions do I write?
do you write? does he write? does she write? does it write? do we write? do they write? Like with 'be', if you would like to make a 'wh' question, you just put the question word at the front: Wh Questions where what why who when how
do I write? do you write? does he write? does she write…? do we write? do they write?
Exercise Make the Present Simple Tense as grammatically correct as possible. 1. I ______ (be) in the shop now. 2. Sechelani ______ (play) football every day. 3. _______ (he/be) a musician? 4. They _______(go) for practice every Tuesday. 5. ______ (it/find) the weather here pretty conducive. 6. ________(they/be) on their way coming? 7. Musunganji ________ (play/not) football every weekend. 8. Why _______ (he/be) in Nakonde? 9. ________ (we/make) too much at night? 10. Where _______ (Salifyanji/work?
Answers to Lesson #36 Choose the correct word ‘some’ or ‘any’ to complete the following sentences. 1. I need a car and some dollars. 2. He would like some help. 3. Growing global vaccine gap 'grotesque' - WHO chief
G WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
ENEVA - The World Health Organisation on Monday blasted the growing gap between the number of coronavirus vaccines administered in rich and poor countries, branding the inequity a global "moral outrage." The WHO tore into wealthy nations now vaccinating younger people at low risk of developing Covid-19 disease, bluntly saying they were costing vulnerable people's lives in low-in-
come countries. WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it was "shocking" how little had been done to avert an entirely predictable "catastrophic moral failure" to ensure the equitable distribution of vaccines worldwide. The gap was "growing every single day, and becoming more grotesque every day," he told a press conference. "Countries that are now vaccinating younger, healthy peo-
ple at low risk of disease are doing so at the cost of the lives of health workers, older people and other at-risk groups in other countries," Tedros said. "The inequitable distribution of vaccines is not just a moral outrage. It's also economically and epidemiologically self-defeating. "Some countries are racing to vaccinate their entire populations - while other countries have nothing." Tedros said rich countries
were giving themselves a false sense of security. The UN health agency chief said the more transmission of the virus, the more variants are likely to emerge - and the more of those that spring up, the more likely they are to evade vaccines. Tedros said countries were in a race against time to bring down transmission and wealthy nations needed to match their promises of solidarity with action on getting vaccines to poorer nations.
Asked about the rising number of cases in Europe, where some states are reimposing tighter restrictions, fearing a third wave of the pandemic, WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan said countries had missed an open goal. He said nations were grasping at straws, thinking that simply administering lots of vaccine doses would be a "golden solution" to end the crisis. "I'm sorry: it's not," Ryan said. – AFP.
Bushiri’s legal team wants SA witnesses to be summoned to Malawi LILONGWE - Self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary Bushiri's legal team have argued during court proceedings that witnesses, whose statements appear in the extradition documents, should be summoned to Malawi. The Malawian State however opposed this, stating that this was not a trial. "The law, the way it's cast in the extradition act is for the sole effect that it is the matter of preliminary inquiry, it is not a trial, that is how the law is - we have argued that in court and it will be for the honourable court to make a decision," Malawian Director of Public Prosecutions Steve Kayuni told the media after court proceedings. The pair, who appeared in the Lilongwe Magistrate's Court on Monday, are wanted in South Africa in connection with fraud and money laundering, allegedly to the tune of R102 million. They, however, fled the coun-
try to their homeland just a few days after the Pretoria Central Magistrate's Court granted them bail of R200, 000 each under strict conditions. South Africa subsequently sent a formal extradition request, which was received by the Malawian government in December. The extradition hearing was supposed to begin and be finalised on March 8 but has been met with several delays. During proceedings on Monday, the court heard several issues being raised by the defence, namely that witnesses, whose statements are included in the extradition documents, should be summoned to ensure a fair hearing, "if indeed they do exist." The court however heard from the State that this was not a trial and, therefore, it was not necessary to bring witnesses. – NEWS24.

10 killed in mass shooting at Colorado grocery store WASHINGTON - A man seen bloodied and limping as he was led away by police in handcuffs has been arrested on suspicion of killing 10 people, including a police officer, at a Colorado grocery store, marking America’s second fatal mass shooting in a week. Chipolopolo call-up cheers Kabwe By MICHAEL MIYOBA
B
LACK Leopards midfielder Rodrick Kabwe has hailed Zambia national soccer team coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic for calling him for the crucial back-tobBack Africa Cup of Nations AFCON qualifiers against Algeria and Zimbabwe. Kabwe, 28, whose last Chipolopolo call up was in 2018 said he was honoured that he has been given an opportunity to represent the country three years after his last involvement with the national team. The former Kabwe Warriors and Zanaco FC winger who trekked to South Africa’s Ajax Cape Town in 2016 before joining Black Leopards FC said he has been working very hard
to be considered for national team duty. Kabwe, who scored a crucial goal to help Black Leopards beat Mamelodi SundownS 1-0 over the weekend said he would do his best to help the Chipolopolo triumph. He said Zambia has a chance to beat Algeria in tomorrow night’s fixture to resurrect the dream of qualifying for the AFCON slated for January 2022 in Cameroon. “We don’t need anything less than a victory. Especially since we are playing at home we have the chance to win the game so all we need to do is to go and play our game. “We need to win then we can focus on the Zimbabwe game later on. For now the focus is on the Algeria game,” said the speedy winger who doubles as

Zambia will host Algeria on Thursday night before travelling to Harare for the final Group H AFCON qualifier against Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, FAZ president Andrew Kamanga said the association has put everything in place to give the Chipolopolo a conducive preparatory environment even under the Covid-19 strained environment.
Kamanga said despite having faced numerous challenges, FAZ has managed to secure all the players that the coach needed for the Algeria and Zimbabwe assignments. He hailed Government through FAZ patron President Edgar Lungu for the support towards the team in these two important assignments. Kamanga said through support from the government, FAZ shall ensure that the team’s remuneration for qualifying is honoured as always.
Belize football team bus held up by armed gang in Haiti THE Belize Football Federation has expressed its "disappointment and disgust" after a bus taking the national team to their hotel in Haiti was held up by an armed gang. The incident occurred on Monday shortly after the squad had arrived in the country for a 2022 World Cup qualifier. Police escorting the team were forced to negotiate with the gang to allow the bus to proceed to the hotel. Captain Deon McCauley described the incident as "a moment of intense fear." "I am happy everyone is safe and I commend you guys for being brave," he added. "Let's continue to stick together and please make the best decisions when it comes to the team." An image posted on the Federation's (FFB) Facebook page showed the gang on motorbikes, wearing masks and carrying weapons. In a statement, the FFB said: "The Football
Federation of Belize takes this time to express its disappointment and disgust at an unfortunate incident faced by the Jaguars as the team was headed from the airport to the hotel in Haiti. "Despite the four-man police escort, the team bus was stopped by an uproar of insurgents with assault rifles on motorcycles and police escorts were forced to negotiate with them for the team bus to continue its journey to the hotel. "We are pleased to report that our Jaguars, although shaken by the terrible experience, are safely at their hotel." The FFB added the safety of the team was its "top priority" and had contacted Fifa and the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football over moving them to a safer environment. The team is scheduled to play Haiti in their opening World Cup qualifier in Portau-Prince tomorrow. – BBC.
a midfielder and a left back. Kabwe has appealed to Chipolopolo fans to believe and continue supporting the boys in their quest to deliver positive results in the two games against Algeria and Zimbabwe. “Football without fans is always difficult, it is not the same, but we ask them to rally behind us they can still give us support even when watching the game on TV,” Kabwe said.
Kabwe is part of the 12 foreign-based stars summoned by “Micho” who had earlier named a 33-member squad before dropping the Kangwa brothers Evans and Klings who will miss the qualifiers alongside Fashion Sakala who sustained an injury. Zambia play Algeria tomorrow then travel to Harare for their final Group H qualifier against the Warriors of Zimbabwe.
