MUMBWA FLOODS GOVERNMENT must be commended for acting swiftly to avert a major disaster in Mumbwa’s Munego area when the Kafue River bust its banks yesterday. The government was quick to mobilise the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) which immediately launched a rescue mission to save desperate citizens perched on roof tops of their submerged homes. The rescue mission was able to evacuate stranded residents to dry land, a feat that was quite successful as no one has been reported to have drowned despite the magnitude of the floods. Some families were caught unaware as water gushed into their homes forcing them to climb roof tops. The ZAF Command should also be commended for rising to the occasion through the use of helicopters from the local air force base. According to the residents, the calamity happened in the morning yesterday while some were still sleeping. Among the affected was a family of five that included a two-day-old baby that stayed on the roof for close to seven hours before the ZAF chopper rescued them. The chopper arrived at around 11:00 hours to remove the roofing sheets and rescue those that were trapped in the ceiling boards and took them to dry land. According to reports on the ground, by 15:00 hours, all the trapped families were rescued with some taken to the hospital for medical check-ups especially children under the age of five. The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has also moved in with the national coordinator, Mr Chanda Kabwe saying that a camp would be set up at Mumbwa Trades Training Institute where the displaced victims could be accommodated until the situation was controlled. The DMMU, which has often been accused by doomsayers of being used by the ruling Patriotic Front government as a campaign wing has in this instance proved its relevance. It has proved that it is the only agency that can mobilise the government machinery at short notice to provide relief when disaster strikes, natural or otherwise. And as Mr Kabwe said yesterday, "Engineers from the Zambia Army, Zambia National Service, DMMU, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, the local authority will be on the ground today to assess and find out what caused the flood because this has never happened in the district." With the Meteorological Department warning of heavy rains, the nation has already seen the damage caused in some parts of the country where bridges have collapsed or been washed away. Already in Kasama, hundreds of motorists are stranded on the Kasama-Mbala road after the temporal bridge at Milima was washed away. The bridge connects Kasama to Mbala, Senga Hill and Mpulungu. It also connects the district to Nakonde in Muchinga Province. The washing away of the temporal bridge comes at the time when the Road Development Agency (RDA) is working on the main bridge. The DMMU must therefore be always on alert because disaster always strike without warning. But so far, the DMMU has passed the test and this is what it should always be doing.

WHAT COULD DONALD TRUMP LEARN FROM HISTORY? By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE

A

S President Donald Trump’s defeat was confirmed numerous times and courts rejected his campaign’s efforts to dispute the vote count, some of his loyalists showed a growing urgency. Thousands of pro-Trump supporters in Washington and in several state capitals hit the streets in last ditch protests to save an election they believed was stolen. As darkness fell, a large group of Trump backers faced off against a mass of counter-protesters in front of the Supreme Court. The confrontation vaulted into fistfights, stab-wounds, arrests and turmoil. A week earlier, Trump supporters - some armed - gathered outside the home of Michigan Secretary of State. Georgia’s election officials – many Republicans – were also threatened with violence over unfounded claims of voter fraud. Historically, peaceful transitions of power were not a settled matter during the early days of the US republic. Elections at the state and local level occasionally spilled over into violence. As the electorate organised into opposing camps for the heated-rematch between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams in 1800, many worried about rising discord and mob violence – particularly when the final outcome remained in flux for months. George Washington’s fatherly charisma offered stability and calm in the previous elections, even as the US underwent a rapid transformation and developed a national identity.

COMPLAINTS

Thomas Jefferson’s victory marked one of the few times in US history that a government of one party would be replaced by a government of another party peacefully. But in the 1800 contest, Washington was absent, having died a year earlier. Adams and Jefferson differed sharply on a range of issues and fundamental questions about the future of the nation. It was an acrimonious, ugly affair. Jefferson’s victory marked one of the few times in US history that a government of one

Trump

party would be replaced by a government of another party peacefully. Adams was devastated; his anguish and humiliation would linger until his death. But he did not dispute the results. He did not call out the army, put guards in the White House or rally his supporters to gather their arms. In the predawn darkness of Jefferson’s inaugural day, Adams left the capital and headed home to his farm in Massachusetts. Yet today, with less than a month until next year’s inauguration, the atmosphere is tense. Instead of taking the Supreme Court’s rebuff of his challenge of the election result as the final out, Trump heightened his assault on the election process legitimacy and the federal courts. Shortly after the Court rejected the Texas lawsuit, the President tweeted “This is a great and disgraceful miscarriage of justice. The people of the US were cheated, and our country disgraced.” As the final hour approaches, will the soon-to-be-former US President change course for the nation’s good? What could Trump learn from John Adams’ history? Knowing the significance of the moment, following the December 14 certification, the electoral votes will be sent to the Capitol. On January 6, Vice-President Mike Pence will preside over a joint session of Congress to read aloud the certificates cast by electors to finalise the vote. If no members of Congress object in writing, the Senate will certify the election of the President-elect and Vice President-elect. But some Trump allies indicated their intention to challenge the electoral vote count. Both a member of the House and a member of the Senate would have to challenge a state’s electors – at that point, both houses of Congress would debate whether to ac-

cept the votes submitted by that state’s electors. For many Africans, the Electoral College system seemed needlessly complicated. For others, its lack of direct repre-

Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the US

sentation rendered US elections less democratic and unrepresentative of the people’s will. Five times in US history – including in 2000 and 2016 – the candidate who won the popular vote did not go on to win the presidency. But barring a final challenge from the Republicans, December 14 marked a last hurdle for certifying the election, making it likely that Trump’s era will end as expected at midday on January 20, 2021, when Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the US – albeit Trump reportedly told aides that he might refuse to leave the White House on that day. Worse still, if as the serving US commander-in-chief, Trump decided to declare martial law before the Inaugu-

ration Day, and let the military oversee an election-rerun, as demanded by his ardent followers. But won’t this trigger waves-of-nationwide unrests similar to those that led to the humiliating downfall of the obstinate Ivory Coast’s ex-president Laurent Gbagbo – a decade ago? Gbagbo could have gone out of his country’s State House in a suit, all dapper and with the assurance of a delicious croissant every morning, lazily lounging in a villa in any country of his choice but instead, he chose the path of indignity and humiliation – a former president trapped in a bunker-hole like a rat, sweating like he had run a marathon, wiping sweat from his armpit. That sight on international TV channels was both annoying and sad. Watching Gbagbo wipe his sweated-armpit made many Africans feel sorry for him even though they knew he did not deserve their pity. They didn’t feel sorry for narcissistic leaders like that – who brought their country to ruin just so they could stay in power for longer – did not deserve pity. Even though Gbagbo had proven to many that he was one of the worst African ex-leaders, they felt sorry for him and all the opportunities he missed to walk away a dignified man, if not a hero. It’s believed that a man should be able to stand by his convictions and defend them. But it gets to a point where the tide turns and comes at him like a Tsunami. That’s when he must walk away. That’s the lesson and hopefully Trump could learn from Gbagbo’s downfall. Most of the world saw that it was not going to end well – not for Gbagbo, not for his country. Only Gbagbo and the sycophants around him didn’t see that the end was going to be that bad. Humiliated and shamed. What could Trump learn from Laurent Gbagbo’s history?

MUMBWA DISASTER From Page 1

Some families were caught unaware as water gushed into their homes forcing them to climb on roof tops. A family of five was swept away as their home was flattened by the rushing water. The five children clung to each other for dear life and were only saved by grabbing onto tree branches as the water current took them on a wild ride. Some fainted in shock as they waited on roof tops to be rescued by the Zambia Airforce (ZAF) personnel in helicopters. Some families were trapped inside their ceiling boards as they waited for help to get through. By 15:00 hours, all the trapped families were rescued and others taken to the hospital for medical check-ups especially children under the age of five. One of the affected residents spoken to by the Sunday Nation, Mr Jason Mvula, 31, explained that he was trapped on the roof for about two hours before he was helped out by the villagers, the fire brigade and the inmates that were called to assist everyone. Mr Mvula was sleeping when he noticed water

flowing in through the windows. Alarmed, he and other family members found their way to the roof top and watch as their township was turned into a river of fast flowing water. Mr Mvula explained that the water reached window level, stating that most household properties were destroyed and others washed away while some houses have collapsed. He also disclosed that some children of the same family were even carried away by the water current but that they were later found stuck somewhere at a nearby junction. He said that some villagers tried to use banana boats to rescue the others but failed due to the strong current. Mr Mvula called on Government through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to provide the district with land and tents so that they could move from the affected area. Meanwhile, DMMU National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe confirmed that no death was recorded in the disaster. Mr Kabwe also said that the Lusaka Mumbwa road has also been affected leaving some bridges damaged due to the heavy current. “Engineers from the Zambia Army, Zambia National Service, DMMU, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, the local authority will be on the ground today to assess and find out what caused the flood because this has never happened in the district,” he said. Mr Kabwe however said that a camp was going to be set up at Mumbwa Trades Training Institute so that the victims could be accommodated until the situation was controlled.

CHIEF BLASTS BIASED CATHOLIC BISHOPS By SILUMESI MALUMO

T

HE Zambia Conference for Catholic Bishops is being too biased and unrealistic in attacking the government and police over the summoning of UPND president Hakainde Hichilema. Chief Luchembe of Mpika said no one is above the law and when the police were given information by the public, it was their duty to ensure that the person reported was summoned and what transpired where two were killed was caused by the UPND leadership’s recklessness who ignored the advice by the police not to take

cadres along. Chief Luchembe said in an interview yesterday that it was wrong for the Bishops to start condemning Government and police when it was Mr Hichilema who caused what happened because if he had heeded the advice given by police nothing would have transpired. He said the clergy needed to play the role of unifying the nation instead of causing confusion. Chief Luchembe said it was shocking that the Bishops could condemn the police and try to protect Mr Hichilema’s unruly behaviour. He said the police wanted to do their work profession-

ally but the cadres brought confusion which was unacceptable. He said it was important that the clergy stopped dragging the respected institution into politics but leave it to execute its duties professionally. “Why are the ZCCB being so biased and unrealistic in their condemnation of the government and police? They need to know that no one is above the law. What ZCCB is doing is wrong, what they need to do is to condemn the unruly behaviour of Mr Hichilema,” Chief Luchembe said. FQM salary negotiations on course, says union By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

NEGOTIATIONS for salary increments at FQM Kansanshi mine have so far reached an advanced stage and will be concluded in a few days, says the National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW). NUMAW president James Chansa told the Daily Nation in an interview that the negotiations were moving smoothly. Mr Chansa said that the obligation of the union was to make its members happy with the outcome of the salary negotiations. Mr Chansa said copper prices had gone up and that the awarding of salary increment to the miners across the country was long overdue. He also said that the miners were equally feeling the effect of the coronavirus, hence the need to motivate them to do more. Last month, unionised workers at China Non-Ferrous Metal Mining Company Luanshya Copper Mine were awarded a K750 salary increment across the board. This was after negotiations between the union and management at the mining firm for the 2021 collective agreement.

Expedite Northern province oil exploration, state urged By PETER SICHALI

GOVERNMENT should expedite the oil exploration in Northern Province so that it can contribute to economic recovery, Northern Province Chamber of Commerce president John Zulu has said. Mr Zulu said the country’s economy had been drastically affected by Covid-19 and it was important to use every available resource to grow the economy. Mr Zulu said it was unfortunate that oil explorations in the province launched three years ago have not been concluded. “Government engaged Tullow Oil to undertake

fuel exploration in the northern circuit but not much has been done in terms of updating the nation on where we are,” Mr Zulu said. Mr Zulu said oil has a readily available market and can be one of the major foreign exchange earner alongside copper and gold. “If these explorations can be concluded, then investors can be engaged to start operations and that will definitely contribute to our national Gross Domestic Product,” he said. He said there was need for the country to organise resources that will be exported to enable the country earn foreign to strengthen the Kwacha. And Mr Zulu has Government to speed up formulation of a marijuana policy. He said marijuana was one of the cash crops that can contribute to the country’s Gross Domestic Product. Mr Zulu said like oil, marijuana can help grow the economy.

By PETER SICHALI

M

AZABUKA member of Parliament, Gary Nkombo has been accused of suppressing democracy in the recently held Western Province elections to install puppets to help him topple Hakainde Hichilema, former provincial chairman, Musangu Njamba has charged. Mr Njamba said UPND national chairperson for elections Garry Nkombo has continued to suppress democracy in the region so that he can have his puppets in position to support him at the national convention where he plans to challenge Mr Hichilema for the UPND presidency. Mr Njamba said Mr Nkombo as commissioner for provincial elections allowed ineligible people to vote. Mr Njamba said four dis-

tricts petitioned the results of the district that have not been settled yet but were allowed to hold elections in the bush. Meanwhile, Mr Njamba has also accused UPND national women’s chairlady and the incoming provincial chairperson of segregation based on tribe. He claimed that the

two are getting rid of Nkoyas and Luvales from the party in the province. He has maintained that there is no democracy in UPND and he would not accept results of the provincial elections. And Mr Njamba said the UPND in the region has

launched a campaign to hound those that came from other political parties to join. Mr Njamba has described the just ended UPND provincial elections as a sham and cannot claim to be party provincial elections. “Now that they think the party is forming Government next year they want to get rid of all those that came from other political parties including PF and MMD,” Mr Njamba said. Mr Njamba said it will not be right for UPND to use people from other parties as a ladder and later dump them. Mr Njamba said he will not accept to be hounded from the party at a time it was about to form Government. “When I joined UPND, I had a car but now I do not. I had two hands now I have one, my lips were okay now they are not and now they want to get rid of me,” he said.

THE state prosecutor, Mr Nsama Nsama who was killed in unclear circumstance on Wednesday when UPND president Hakainde Hichilema appeared for questioning at police headquarters was put to rest yesterday at Lusaka’s Memorial Park. Mr Nsama was shot dead by unidentified assailants at a restaurant as the police tried to disperse UPND cadres who went to give solidarity to their president. Minister of Religious Affairs Godfridah Sumaili, Attorney General Likando Kalaluka, Patriotic Front deputy secretary-general Mumbi Phiri, Nkoloma ward councillor Tasila Lungu-Mwansa, were among the hundreds of mourners who attended the burial. And Zambia Police Service has thanked Mr Nsama’s family for interring their beloved one in a dignified manner without causing any mayhem following his death on Wednesday. Police spokesperson Esther Katongo however called on the family of the late Joseph Kaunda whose burial was scheduled for today to emulate the family of Mr Nsama to have their departed relative buried in a respectful manner and allow the investigations in the matter to be concluded. Ms Katongo said, police had received information that some people were planning to cause confusion and attack named public places under the guise of mourning. “We therefore advise all those wishing to cause mayhem to reconsider their intention as enough police officers have been deployed to ensure that there is no breakdown in law and order during this period,” said Ms Katongo.

Milima bridge washed away, leaving motorists stranded in Kasama HUNDREDS of motorists are stranded on the Kasama-Mbala road after the temporal bridge at Milima in Kasama was washed away. The bridge connects Kasama to Mbala, Senga and Mpulungu. It also connects the district to Nakonde in Muchinga Province.

The washing away of the temporal bridge comes at a time when the Road Development Agency (RDA) is working on the main bridge. A check at the site yesterday found trucks and other vehicles waiting on either side of the bridge. Kasama District Commissioner Kelly Kashiwa

who rushed to the scene explained that RDA has mobilised to do emergency works on the main bridge so that it can allow traffic. Mr Kashiwa said the RDA will compact the remaining part of the main bridge to allow for a smooth flow of traffic. He said RDA will later

continue with the works so that the bridge is perfected. Mr. Kashiwa however bemoaned the collapse of the bridge stating that the road is the main gateway for the province to Muchinga and neighbouring Tanzania. And a Kasama motorist, Mr Obby Chisala has commended the government for its quick intervention to enable the movement of traffic. - ZANIS.

TRIBAL and divisive politicians should not be allowed to rule this country, Chief Mpepo of Mpika has said. Chief Mpepo said it was important for political parties to campaign based on their ideologies and what they will do for the country once elected. Chief Mpepo said it was disappointing that some politicians have continued to advance their tribal agenda to gain political mileage. "Politicians who want to divide the country based on tribe for their political expediency will not succeed because we have always been one Zambia, one Nation," Chief Mpepo said. Chief Mpepo said people contesting in next year's elections should be preaching peace and unity. He said an election was a democratic process of choosing leaders and that no one should die in the process. "Our forefathers had already shed their blood during the struggle for independence and there is no need for us to shed blood to gain political power," Chief Mpepo said. And Chief Mpepo said political violence should have no space in the country’s political space. “We are all Zambians regardless of our political differences. We do not want our youths to beat and destroy one another’s properties. We should value life. So we are appealing for peace now, during and after the elections,” Chief Mpepo said. Chief Mpepo said police should arrest those perpetrating violence and urged the courts to impose deterrent sentences to those found guilty. He also said the police should thoroughly probe the shooting of the two people by unknown assailants in Lusaka on Thursday.

Teen mother’s confession:

I fell pregnant at a house sex party T

EENAGE sex parties are not new in Kenya. They are now just easier with easy access to smart phones and the Internet. They didn’t start with randy teenagers in Nairobi.

she recalls. She blames her foolishness at the time on the allure of seduction by grown men, teenage rebellion and ignorance on ways of the world. “Right now, I will chain my daughter to the door if I have to. I have spoken to her. I have told her how I messed up and I don’t want her to tread the same path. She has a phone with WhatsApp. All her messages come to my laptop too. She is never away from me for more than ten minutes. I have to protect her from the mess I got myself into. When she turns 18, there is nothing I can do, but for now, she knows I will kill her if she tries nonsense with men.”

Take a 30-year-old city business woman whose name we have concealed to protect her daughter’s privacy because she is a minor. The single mum got pregnant during a sex party in Kirinyaga when she was in 16 and in form two. She recalls that it all started when her cousin who was in form four asked her to escort to her boyfriend’s place when their guardians had gone to a funeral in Meru. On the way, they picked up two more girls who were also in high school. The cousin told them, “her boyfriend had some friends and they also wanted girlfriends. I thought the boys were in high school like us,” but instead they found six grown men.

She says besides her foolishness, society also allows teenagers to get lost. “The house we went to had neighbours, and they all saw us getting in, music blaring and alcohol being served, no one raised an alarm. It’s like the society has branded men who sleep with girls under 10 years as pedophiles but once a girl has breasts, then it’s OK for men to sleep with her.”

“There was alcohol, lots of it. We were told we were safe because some of the men were police officers. We got there at 10am and by midday we had relaxed enough to try a few drinks. It’s the first time I drank a popular wine. It was sweet, and two bottles got me so drunk.”

Sex parties don’t just lure girls. Boys too are roped in as one medical doctor discovered when he tracked his son’s phone to a Sh5000 per head teen party-bash which turned out to be a scene from the harem of a mad roman emperor Caligula-when he sent his nephew to check out. “I had their parent’s phone numbers but while all the mothers were concerned, the fathers didn’t see what the fuss was all about,” says the doctor based in Lavington, Nairobi.

She says she swapped multiple men, as did all the girls who attended the party. “No one forced me. I actually thought I had become a woman and I could make my own decisions. I saw myself as more mature than my agemates because serious men, who were older, had money. Some were police officers who wanted me. I could not waste time anymore with boys at school.” She and her girls were dropped home in the wee hours. When her grandmother, mother and aunty returned, “they found us asleep and didn’t think much of it since they arrived about 8pm. I attended three more such parties before schools reopened.” By the third and fourth party, she was also inviting her other friends as the retinue of men also increased. “I thought it was a good life and I was having fun, something none of my classmates could do. My periods delayed when schools reopened and by mid-term, I knew I was pregnant.” Her grandmother was a widow. She was from a single parent home. Her aunt was a single mother too.

“When they realized I was pregnant, my grandmother was calm, but my mum and her sister beat me up until I told them how it happened. When I confessed to not knowing who made me pregnant, they beat me some more as they escorted me to the house where the parties were held. My mother and her sister could not do anything to the man. They went to the police, who promised to make an arrest the next day. But the man fled and to date, I don’t know my child’s father. Three other girls also got pregnant, including my cousin who eloped and married her police officer boyfriend. She had just turned 18 so nothing could be done,”

The doctor seized his son’s phone and learnt that the party had been planned for weeks and only a few select teens were invited. The criteria included having parents without drama and those that allowed their kids time out at night. “These are parties planned with military precision and even keen parents can’t find out. They have some type of honor in keeping silent. No one rats out, no matter what,” explains the doctor. Belinda Adhiambo from Nairobi’s Kasarani area says school closure due to the Corona pandemic made matters worse. Belinda recently discovered through snooping into her niece’s phone that she and her daughter were part of the ‘16 Forever’, a sex and alcohol WhatsApp group. -standardmedia.co.ke

Kazakh bodybuilder who married sex doll reveals agony as she is ‘broken’ just before Christmas

K

AZAKH bodybuilder Yuri Tolochko, who recently married his plastic girlfriend ‘Margo’, has revealed that his wife has broken just before the Christmas holidays and is being repaired. Muscleman Tolochko said that the couple’s reunion will be a true “gift” for both of them as they plan to spend New Year together. “She is broken. Now she is being repaired. She’s in another city. When she recovers, it will be a gift for both of us,” the athlete said. The Kazakh Hulk, who claims to have been inseparable from Margo since their first meeting, has become an internet star after announcing his intention to marry the sex doll. The first picture of the unusual couple emerged on social media in May 2019, with Tolochko happily sharing all the details of their affair with his followers. The athlete had wanted to marry his plastic fiancée in the spring, but their wedding was postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions. Tolochko, who finally tied the knot with Margo last month, gladly accepts invitations to take part in TV shows where he talks about his family life. “In general, I began to be jealous of Margo. Many men would like to imagine the same. After the wedding, I decided to show her less to people, I forbade her from Instagram (I did this a long time ago). Maybe I’m being too selfish. But that’s the beauty of Margo, that I can do this to her and she won’t mind,” the bodybuilder said. -RT News

ZAM must be involved in music contracts EVENTS and music promoter Isaac Siwale has advised the Zambia Association of Musicians to take keen interest in contracts that most musicians are being offered to avoid unfairness. Speaking in an interview with the Nation, Siwale who is also C.E.O of Hustlers Events Management said he would love ZAM as a music governing body to fully get involved in artiste's contracts so that their is uniformity, fairness and professionalism. He said that he has noted with concern that some artistes getting music contracts with certain music labels could getting themselves unfair deals. " It is possible some music labels are enslaving artistes with their contracts. ZAM needs to be involved so that we have standard and professional contracts," Siwale said. He said he was happy that a number of artistes have gotten contracts and that there are music labels coming up but special caution must be taken by the artistes and ZAM.

Vesselvibes share X-mas with SOS Children By TERENCE MISELO RENOWNED music promoter and TV presenter G-Wise working with Vesselvibes music label on Christmas Day led over

10 artistes to spend a special Christmas moment with children at SOS Children's Village in Lusaka. This was Vesselvibes' special way of reaching out to the needy and celebrate Christmas with

love and sharing. Vesselvibes is an online publishing and music distribution company that has a special policy of giving back to the community. G-wise and all the artistes un-

der the label mingled with the children at SOS, entertained them and presented them with various donations that included 20 bags of Pembe mealie-meal, 40l of cooking oil, 10 medas of rice and alot more.

" What made us do this is because we bleive the community plays a big roll in supporting artistes and without them we are nothing," said G-Wise. "Among the artistes that entertained the kids today, we have

some who where in the same position as the children here with no parents." The artistes present at the event were Subbz, Gaza, Fcozee, Swagger, Rie dee, Martinez, Pizo and Nalez.

Educationist Dr Rozious Siatwambo has said establishing a special education needs unit under Great North Academy in Lusaka will bring inclusiveness among learners. Speaking in an exclusive interview following the launch of a Special Education Unit under his institution Great North Academy, Dr Siatwambo said the initiative came as a means of having an inclusive learning policy. He said it has been observed that for a long time, children living with disability have been marginalised are not given much attention to ensure quality education. "We have had such cases of such learners and it has been very difficult to handle them so with this specialised arrangement that we have, it is easy to isolate some learners," he said. Dr Siatwambo explained that the specialised unit is well equipped and has all the expertise needed to handle children with learning disabilities. "The unit is separate and away from the school setup. This was done so we could give the children maximum attention," Dr. Siatwambo said adding that although our society seems not ready to understand such establishments because of high stigma, his institution will engage in massive advocacy. He further explained that despite the unit being established separate from the main campus, there will be common programmes that will promote interaction and display of talent. "There will be a meeting point between the two schools. We will give them (children with disabilities) a slot in all areas of competition," he said. And Dr Siatwambo has urged parents to be alert and monitor children from any form of addiction. Reviewing the performance of a Rehab Centre under Great North Academy that was established in 2018, Dr Siatwambo said it was important to understand that most young people are prone to addiction and that parents should be warry of the common symptoms to seek help. Amongst the common signs of addiction among young people, Dr Siatwambo said that a child may become solitary, hygienically careless and they ask for money any how. Others have a drop in their school grade, they start avoiding eye contact, change camps of friends and so on.

IN

ZAMBIA women have historically had a quieter role in society than men and while we have made great strides in the recent decades, there are still very visible gender gaps in our country. Economic insecurity and education are catalyzing increased flexibility of gender roles and the division of labour and more and more women are entering the work force. However, there is still great disparity in workforce representation, particularly in wildlife conservation.

The Influence of Women in Conservation

Women have distinct roles, knowledge, experiences, and ideas from those of men and have a lot to bring into the conservation conversation. This is particularly important because conservation projects cannot work unless everyone in a community is involved. Increasingly conservationists are recognizing this and that the lack of equal representation of women may hinder the success of some initiatives. The enormous potential women have to contribute to conservation and sustainable development is yet to be fully explored but it cannot be denied that the involvement of women is a key component in effectively meeting both conservation and development goals. It is with this is mind that Women for Conservation Zambia was launched. Women for Conservation is an inclusive network for all women who work in or are interested in wildlife conserva-

The female voice is an important one and Women for Conservation seeks to amplify it. Not only is the female voice in Zambia important, it is also often culturally sensitive and reflective of other marginalized groups such as the youth and disabled, of whom women are often primary caregivers. Women for Conservation hosts quarterly events in and around Lusaka, that enable women (and their male allies) working in conservation and those interested in conservation to share experiences both conservation related and other topics that improve livelihoods and the environment. In existence since 2017 the network, through its series of activities has increasingly raised awareness of the various conservation efforts occurring in Zambia and the women behind them. This December, Women for Conservation ended the year with a legal game meat braai hosted to educate attendees on the dangers of the illegal bushmeat trade, the link between the illegal wildlife trade and COVID-19, as well as the availability and affordability of legal game meat in Zambia.

tion in Zambia to meet, share ideas and opportunities and support each other. Though women are very much involved in many en-

vironmental issues such as farming, water collection, general natural resource use, they are much less engaged in ‘professional’ conservation activities. Women do not have

as many paid jobs in the sector as men and those that do have historically been few and between, particularly when looking at senior management.

The illegal bushmeat trade is the biggest threat to wildlife populations in Zambia and the region, as killing methods such as snaring are silent and indiscriminate, harming many species of our Zambian wildlife.

In 2018, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife launched the “This Is Not A Game” behaviour change campaign that targets illegal bushmeat consumers with the message that the product is “illegal, dangerous and carries diseases” and alternatively promotes legal Zambian game meat from accredited suppliers. Bushmeat is unregulated, unhygienically prepared and dangerous to eat, threatening unsuspecting members of the public who may consume this unsafe product. At the event were two speakers, Thawanda Masiye, the Executive Secretary of Wildlife Producers Association of Zambia (WPAZ) and Stelia Lubasi, one of the first female legal game meat suppliers in Zambia. Both spoke of their pioneering work in Zambia’s conservation sector and the importance of preserving our wildlife by not purchasing or consuming illegal bushmeat. An important part of the work to engage more women in conservation is visibility. Speakers like Thawanda and Stelia showcase to other Zambians what young women are capable of. Leadership and inclusivity are increasingly recognized as fundamental to conservation success and these two conservationists are spearheading this mission. Women for Conservation, Zambia hosts quarterly events and can be found on facebook and instagram. To be notified of the next event kindly email Maina at maina@wcpzambia. org.

Oh yah, people mocked me for becoming thin; well others were surprised how a healthy person became sick in a short time. Within three months, I got myself back on my feet and I realised sometimes, it's only you who can rescue yourself. Later that year, I came out publicly with my status because I know and still know that there is someone out there putting up a strong smiley face but can't come to accept their HIV status.. Look, yes, taking ARVs everyday is not easy, however life can be more meaningful if you accept your status.

I remember telling Dr Sinkala Vernon to do what he can to help me and that I will be a Good girl. WHEN one of your tyres goes out, it is replaced with a tyre we like referring to as “take me home, which is actually called a donut tyre, (although a donut tyre is typically the same size as a regular tyre). The donut tyre is intended to provide you with a means of transportation so you can get to the mechanic and have your tyre changed as soon as possible. This tyre is smaller, so it can be stored inside the vehicle and save space. Most owners’ manuals have a recommended mileage for the donut tyre, with 50 to 70 km being the average. If you are driving on a donut tyre, it is best to get it replaced as soon as possible. Here are a few things to note when driving with a donut tyre: Braking, handling, and cornering is affected: Donut tyres affect the braking, handling, and cornering characteristics of the vehicle. The donut tyre is not as large as the other three tyres, which can decrease braking and handling. Furthermore, the vehicle dips where the donut tyre is mounted, so the vehicle will tend to pull where the spare tyre is located. Keep this in mind while driving so you can be better prepared for it. Drive slowly Donut tyres are not made to go as fast as conventional tires. This is because they are more compact, so the guideline is the spare tyre should not be driven faster than 50km/h. While you can drive on highways with

a donut tyre, it is safer to avoid them as you will only be able to go about 50km/h or less. Since the donut tyre sits for a while without being inspected, it is a good idea to check the air pressure once you put the tyre on your car. Another thing to keep in mind when driving on a donut tyre is that the electronic stability control and traction control sysDRIVING SLOW

tems will not work properly. Once a regular sized tire is placed back on the vehicle, both systems will work and you can drive like you did before. While they are off, keep in mind to take extra time and go a little slower to ensure your safety, and the safety of others. Emphasis is made: Driving with a donut tyre should only been done when absolutely necessary and for a short amount of time. This is your road safety tip for today! ‘TRAFFIC DESK.’ (ZP)

Millions of Americans lose jobless benefits as Trump refuses to sign aid bill PALM BEACH, Fla/WASHINGTON - Millions of Americans saw their jobless benefits expire on yesterday after U.S. President Donald Trump refused to sign into law a $2.3 trillion pandemic aid and spending package, protesting that it did not do enough to help everyday people. Trump stunned Republicans and Democrats alike when he said he was unhappy with the massive bill, which provides $892 billion in badly needed coronavirus relief, including extending special unemployment ben-

efits expiring on December 26, and $1.4 trillion for normal government spending. Without Trump’s signature, about 14 million people could lose those extra benefits, according to Labour Department data. A partial government shutdown will begin on Tuesday unless Congress can agree a stopgap government funding bill before then. After months of wrangling, Republicans and Democrats agreed to the package last weekend, with the support of the White House. Trump, who hands over power to

Democratic President-elect Joe Biden on January 20, did not object to terms of the deal before Congress voted it through on Monday night. But since then he has complained that the bill gives too much money to special interests, cultural projects and foreign aid, while its onetime $600 stimulus checks to millions of struggling Americans were too small. He has demanded that be raised to $2, 000. “Why would politicians not want to give people $2, 000, rather than only $600?... Give our people the mon-

ey!” the billionaire president tweeted on Christmas Day, much of which he spent golfing at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. Many economists agree the bill’s aid is too low but say the immediate support is still welcome and necessary. A source familiar with the situation said Trump’s objection to the bill caught many White House officials by surprise. While the outgoing president’s strategy for the bill remains unclear, he has not vetoed it and could still sign it in coming days. REUTERS.
