XPELLED National Restoration ParE ty(NAREP) President has refused to step down insisting that he was still in control because no constitutional due process was observed in arriving at his expulsion. Mr Steven Nyirenda said he was shocked to learn of the fake expulsion because he had not been charged and that provisions for the removal of president from office were clear. He was reacting to claims by a party faction that he had been expelled as president from the party. To Page 4

OVER the past few weeks, hundreds of people have been left in tears, not knowing what the future holds for them. These are the victims of shady land deals that have turned sour. They probably thought they had clinched lucrative deals from those who sold them the plots. It is a bitter lesson they have learnt, one that has been repeated countless times throughout the country. In Kitwe's Mindolo North area, developers were awoken to a rude shock as they saw theirs houses - some finished , razed at dawn. Lesson? That those who acquired the plots on land dully owned by Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) which obtained a count order to have the illegal squatters removed, have lost investment. The court did not entertain their claim that the plots were obtained legally. How can one obtain another person’s property without their consent and claim that it was obtained legally. All too often, some real estate agents hurry their customers into making irrational decisions or indeed conduct due diligence before paying for a plot. This is the predicament which has befallen many people who spend their life savings buying plots which unknown to them are sitting on water lines or simply belong to others. The demolition exercise repeated itself within a matter of days in the Ngwerere area of Lusaka. In this case, "development" had encroached on land belonging to Zambia Railways Limited. It is a fact that there is a shortage of land on the line of rail and unscrupulous real estate agents have taken advantage to con people out of their hard earned money. Although much of the blame has been helped on political cadres even the people who have been dealing with them should not be spared. In the Mindolo North saga, the victims are people who have a basic understanding of how and what it takes to acquire land. This also applied to the victims in Ngwerere . They let themselves to be cheated because they believe involved in "cutting corners" and they must realise that this never works, and it should be a lesson to the public to be wary of lucrative land offers. The would be developers should learn to deal with the ministry of Lands and the local authority. Although a lot of councils have not operated above board, the law still says they are a lawful land agents for the ministry of Lands. We note for example that government has suspended the Lusaka and Kitwe city councils to investigate irregular land deals. We hope those found wanting won't be spared. It is a shame that in most cases councilors have been implicated in suspect land deals - acquisition of residential plots to be specific. This is despite the fact that councilors have no powers to demarcate land. But in these days and age we expect people to think twice and not allow themselves to be cheated. Yes, it is good to invest in real estate but at the same time, people ought to be land smart, and not lose everything they have toiled for through out their lives.

CHINESE, LOCALS CLASH LOOMS From Page 1 The residents have installed security to guard the plot to ensure the developer does not access the land despite holding title deeds to the land. And the Lusaka City Council has confirmed that the Chinese developer had rights to the land because he had title deeds from the Ministry of Lands. However, residents of PHI area in Lusaka have blocked a Chinese firm from constructing a shopping mall near Praise Worship Centre along great east road. Jacqueline Chishimba who spoke on behalf of the residents and a PHI neighborhood watch member, said Lusaka City Council refused to sell the land in question to residents to set up a youth centre because it was under Zesco pole lines but surprisingly they had instead sold to a Chinese firm to construct a mall. Ms Chishimba said the residents would not take it lightly and they would ensure that the Chinese firm do not have access to the land. She said in an interview yesterday, it was unfair that Zam-

bians who were owners of the land were being rejected to own land and it was been given to foreigners. Ms Chishimba said the residents had a better plan of setting up a youth centre which would be more beneficial to many youths. She said that since the residents were refused to buy the land in question because it was under Zesco pole lines, the said Chinese firm would not be allowed to build the mall. We shall enforce security, she said, to ensure that the Chinese firm does not conduct any activities on the land. “We shall not allow this Chinese on this land, if it means being arrested, we shall sleep in cells because of doing the right thing. How come they refused to give land to residents who wanted to something which can benefit our youths and yet they give to a foreigner so that he can build a mall? That will not be allowed. We already have a mall here in PHI and all we want is something that can benefit our people. But now they refused giving us this land because there is a Zesco pole line. We shall not allow this foreigner to have access to it, justice must prevail,” she said. Meanwhile Lusaka City Council Public Relations Manager George Sichimba said the Chinese firm had a title deed from the Ministry of Land. He said that having the title deed means that the Chinese firm was the owner of the land in question. Mr Sichimba further said the council would hold a meeting with affected parties in order to resolve the matter.

HH ENDORSED INSULTS, SAYS CHITIMUKULU

… as Mwinelubemba says UPND leader has not apologized or distanced himself BY SIMON MUNTEMBA

T

HE failure by UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema to apologise and condemn Opposition Alliance spokesperson James Lukuku’s insults against the Bemba Paramount Chief Chitimukulu makes him complicit. Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba people has said, HakaindE Hichilema as a member of the opposition alliance has remained quiet and not distanced himself from its spokesperson James Lukuku’s unjustified insults and attacks on me because he endorsed it. And the Paramount Chief has announced that he would take leave from the media until further notice because some opposition politically-inclined media houses were twisting whatever he said to suit their sponsors’ agenda. Speaking when he was featured on Kasama Radio

on Friday, Paramount Chief Chitimukulu wondered why alliance members such as the UPND president remained quiet after Lukuku went on rampage to discredit and verbally attack him. He said the silence on the part of Mr Hichilema was an indication that he endorsed Lukulu’s utterances against him. “I was skeptical about the alliance spokesperson’s statement against me. I waiting for Mr Hichilema to distance himself from Lukuku’s statement

but he has remained quiet meaning he was in support of it,” he said. Paramount Chief Chitimukulu said he found it strange that the alliance spokesperson could verbally attack and accuse him of advocating sectarianism, regionalism and tribalism for merely encouraging his subjects to vote in large numbers in 2021 to end voter apathy in the region. Mr Lukuku, as the Opposition Alliance spokesperson, said, among several despicable

statements that, “It is irresponsibility of the highest order for the Chitimukulu to publish sectarianism, regionalism and tribalism. Being a chief is not a passport for segregating our people away from the spirit of One Zambian One Nation, and neither is it a passport for you not to expect to be challenged.” He went on to claim that Paramount Chief Chitimukulu was a PF cadre who was on the party’s payroll. Meanwhile, Paramount Chief Chitimukulu said he had decided to take leave off media until further notice to avoid being misunderstood. He said he had been advised by stakeholders such as the bishops, chiefs and the general populace to take leave from the media until after the 2021 Presidential and general elections. “This is my last time on radio and will stop publishing any article until maybe after elections,” he said.

President Lungu prods church MANDA HILL MALL CLOSED to preach peace, unity BY SIMON MUNTEMBA

BY MUYANI SINJABALE

THE Church must not abandon the God given mandate to preach love and unity to the people, President Edgar Lungu has said. The President was speaking at the episcopal installation of Dr Benjamin Phiri as Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ndola at the Cathedral of Christ the King on the Copperbelt yesterday. President Lungu in his address to the congregation said government is looking to the church to be in the forefront of sowing seeds of love and not discord. "Do not look at politicians as politicians but look at them as Zambian people not by tribe or religious lines," he said The Head of State said the church has played a significant role in reaching people in hard to reach areas in the country. "This gesture has not gone un

noticed. Government recognizes the various programmes the church has placed in the health and education sectors among others to better the lives of the people," President Lungu said. He reiterated that the church cannot afford to work in isolation but collaborate with government as both serve the same constituency. "We are bound to complement each other, government is looking to the church to foster unity and love," the President said. President Lungu said government is determined to uphold national unity and peace. And Bishop Benjamin Phiri called on the church to pray for leaders in public offices so that they receive God's grace to serve the people. He said serving people is a responsibility from God which individuals do not deserve hence the need for leaders to be humble.

BY SIMON MUNTEMBA A 39 YEAR-OLD German-based Zambian musician identified as Cassy Nyemba has been brutally beaten by her 60-year-old fiancé who later committed suicide. And Zambia’s Ambassador to Germany Anthony Mukwita expressed grave sadness at the brutal beating of Ms Nyemba who is three months pregnant. This is contained in a statement by first secretary press at the Zambian mission in Berlin, Kellys Kaunda.

Bishop Phiri said leaders need to remember that being public officers entails service to the people and God. "When we humble ourselves and obey God, we will do our best to serve God and the people. It is responsibility The Bishop pledged to work with government which he said was a great partner in serving the people of Zambia especially the under privileged. Meanwhile Lusaka Archbishop Alick Banda, predecessor to Dr Phiri thanked President Lungu for his personal support rendered towards attaining the mission of the diocese. Archbishop Banda said he is happy that the strategic plan to rebuild the diocese has helped to bring it to the current state. He urged Bishop Phiri to lead like a shepherd as this will create an atmosphere of working together.

THE Lusaka City Council has with immediate effect closed Manda Hill Shopping Mall for failing to have a working sanitation ablution block.

The closure of Manda Hill was confirmed by Lusaka mayor Miles Sampa through a Facebook posting. Mr Sampa posted on social media platforms that LCC would only open the mall when they fixed their toilets

Pregnant Zambian woman brutally beaten in German Mr Mukwita said Ms Nyemba’s boyfriend died after he allegedly jumped from the 13th floor of an apartment building in which the couple lived after violently beating her. Mr Mukwita said the violent attack against a defenseless Ms Nyemba has left him shell-shocked as gory details of how she escaped her attacker’s attempt to strangle her to death in her sleep around 9:00 hours on Monday morning emerged. He said reports under police investiga-

tion indicated that Ms Nyemba’s fiancé initially used a rope and tied it around her neck and began to violently squeeze it with the apparent aim to kill her. Mr Mukwita said the attacker then used a pillow to suffocate her but failing, he attempted to reach for a knife which gave Nyemba a slight chance at escaping. He stated that eyewitness account report that Ms Nyemba jumped from the second floor or 9 meters down and lay motionless on the ground as neighbors called for

an ambulance. “As the medics were attending to her, a man, later identified as Nyemba’s fiancé, fell down from the 13th floor of the apartment building and died instantly,” first secretary press at the Zambian mission in Berlin he said. Mr Mukwita said it was not yet known what could have triggered the entire tragic episode. Police are investigating the matter and have since called on anyone with any information that could assist with investiga-

that were currently nonfunctional. “Until further notice, potential Manda Hill Mall shoppers are advised to go to nearest malls namely Arcades, East Park Mall, Munali Mall, Levy Mall etc,” Mr Sampa posted.

the facility. He disclosed that instead of accessing maternity services at the nearby Chasefu rural health centre, pregnant women are referred to far away Kanyanga Mission Rural Health Centre for deliveries. Mr Mtika complained of women being forced to give birth at home because they cannot access maternity services nearby. "The government has built a very nice building at Chasefu rural health centre with everything inside for the women to be kept and deliver from there, but it has been turned into a white elephant," the councillor lamented.

tions to step forward. After medical examination, he said, it was revealed that Nyemba is three months pregnant, has had three of her ribs broken, sustained serious damage to the spinal code, lost some fingers, and suffered serious injuries around her waist. He said such a brutal attack on a woman happening in one of the most developed parts of the world was totally unacceptable. Mr Mukwita has called on the German government to do more to protect women beyond the efforts of law enforcement officials.

NAREP EXPLODES From Page 1

There was leadership drama in NAREP yesterday when the members of NEC announced that they had expelled Mr. Nirenda as President Soon after Mr. Nyirenda called a press briefing denying that he had been expelled because no formal process had been undetaken to arrive at the decision. He also said there was no national executive meeting held contrary to earlier reports from a faction within the party. He explained that party members had gathered at one of his premises in Roma but started arguing and fighting. In the process of trying to stop the fights, one faction reportedly left and went to hold a press briefing where they announced the purported expulsion. Mr Nyirenda rubbished reports of financial indiscipline saying the party had nothing when he joined, and it was only now that it had something worth talking about. Mr Nyirenda’s refusal to down has however thrown the party into a crisis as the Ezra Ngulube faction have insisted that he was expelled. Mr Nyirenda also said the

bone of contention was his refusal to back an opposition alliance led by UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema. He said he was initially forced to join the alliance but left because the two parties had different political ideologies. He said he remained the party president and the decision by the party hierarchy was null and void. “They are saying this was done through a NEC meeting held today (yesterday) August 15. Yes we had slated this date for a NEC meeting to resolve certain issues brought about by some members. But unfortunately this meeting did not take place due to behaviors I can only classify as cadreism and holiganism brought about by some members. “Let me clarify that the disgruntled members who have allegedly kicked me out of the party have been pushing for an alliance with the opposition UPND led by Hakainde Hichilema which I have been against because we have different ideologies,” he said. “I want to remind members of the public that, he said, NAREP is a peaceful party whose ideologies are based on principles such dialogue and not

confrontational and what we witnessed has no blessings of the party and we condemn it in the strongest terms,” Mr Nyirenda said. Mr Nyirenda said that the party was intact and advised any member who feels aggrieved to follow party structures and laid down procedures to maturely resolve issues. Early yesterday, Secretary General Ezra Ngulube announced that a party NEC meeting had resolved to expel Mr Nyirenda. Mr Ngulube told Journalists yesterday that the party arrived at expelling Mr Nyirenda after passing a vote of no confidence. He said since Mr Nyirenda was ushered in as party president he had brought confusion among the members which could not be condoned. The Secretary General said Mr Nyirenda had created factions in the party which brought confusion among members. He said Mr Nyirenda also refused to recognize elected NEC members which was against the party constitution, therefore, the party cannot hold onto a person who wanted to destroy it.

“Mr Nyirenda has not only brought confusion in the party, he has been doing things without following party procedures, has financial indiscipline. We cannot allow an individual to destroy this party. So we are directing him to bring back all the NAREP property. And we want to inform the nation that all the appointments which were made by Mr Nyirenda have been nullified. We are also urging the banks never to conduct any business that involves the party with Mr Nyirenda as doing so will be criminal,” he said. Mr Ngulube said party vice president Charles Maboshe would act as party president until the party held a convention in November next year. Mr Ngulube also disclosed that the party had suspended its national chairperson Jimmy Mubambwe for gross indiscipline. And party spokesperson Frank Sichone said the party would consider to recall former president Elias Chipimo because he had a zeal to grow the party. Mr Sichone said Mr Chipimo was still a party member and he can be recalled when the party needed his services.

Rising Covid cases blamed on mass gatherings BY SIMON MUNTEMBA

THE public has been advised against mass gatherings in high prone areas because of the increased risk of spreading the disease further. Minister of Heath Chitalu Chilufya noted that the numbers of new cases were esca-

lating because the public had continued to attend gatherings without observing health preventive measures. He emphasised the need to wear masks correctly, social distancing, avoiding crowded places, use of alcohol based sanitisers and hand washing. Meanwhile active Covid-19 cases and deaths have contin-

ued rising in Zambia with the country recording 165 new cases out of 588 tests and four deaths in the last 24 hours. Dr Chilufya announced yesterday that 165 new more COVID-19 cases and four deaths had been recorded country wide out of 588 tests conducted. The Minister said out of the

four deaths, two died from the health facility, while two were brought in dead (BIDs). He further said 96 patients were admitted in various health facilities with 70 in Lusaka of which three were in Intensive Care Unity (ICU) and 26 were dotted across the country, with 479 recoveries.

Lungu launches K470 million youth empowerment scheme From Page 1 The President said this yesterday during the relaunch of the multi-sectoral approach on the youth empowerment programmes at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. President Lungu reiterated that the implementation of empowerment programmes would not only be accessed from the ministry headquarters in Lusaka but should be accessed at district level where the youth are found. Mr Lungu further advised the youths in Zambia to seize opportunities as they were presented to them through empowerment programs. He said his administration remained committed to ensuring that it provided the necessary skills to ensure to ensure youths were able to utilize those skills to create wealth and eradicate poverty in the country. The President however, said he was aware that skills alone may not bring about the desired change, but be accompanied by other inputs and support systems such as access to land, affordable financing, start-up tools, or other materials that will help you the young people to start up a successful business. “To this end, government has allocated a total amount of K470 million for youth empowerment to the ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development targeting 150,000 beneficiaries,” he said.. The President encouraged the young people in Zambia to utilize the funds prudently as they were meant to be a revolving fund so that their

friends could equally benefit from the same. He also said he was aware of the negative effects that micro, small and medium enterprises had been facing in the wake of Covid19. As a responsible government, he said, the PF government’s job is to listen and address the issues that the youth raise. He therefore, directed the Ministry of Tourism and Arts as well as the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development to set aside funds for micro, small and medium scale enterprises in order to help their businesses to thrive. The President also directed the two Ministries to expedite the process of identifying innovative youths with viable ideas. He further implored the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development to present the necessary information to the youths on how to access the empowerment funds adding that the implementation of the funds would not only be accessed in Lusaka but wherever the youths where. Mr Lungu also appealed to the youths not to accept to be used as agents of evil and hate in the country. He indicated that youths were productive individuals who needed not to accept to be used for violence as the country headed towards the 2021 General elections. Mr Lungu said violence would not only disrupt the national peace and unity but would also destroy them in the process.

Extend NRCs issuance to Nkumbi college lecturers stage go-slow prisoners, govt urged BY PETER MALASHA

BY OLIVER SAMBOKO EXTEND the issuance of National Registration Cards to inmates in preparation for voting in next year’s tripartite elections, Prisons Care and Counselling Association (PRISCA) has asked Government. This follows a court ruling allowing prisoners to vote following the case of Godfrey Malembeka Vs Attorney General and ECZ in which the court held that prisoners’ right to vote should be upheld, prisoners will for the first time be allowed to vote in next year’s general election. PRISCA executive Director Dr. Godfrey Malembeka said Prisoners should not be left out in the ongoing issuance of national registration cards as the document was an important prerequisite for obtaining a voters’ card. He said his association was aware that mobile issuance of NRCs has commenced and strongly feels the exercise should extend to correctional facilities so that prisoners are also given the opportunity to obtain the document. Dr Malembeka said without obtaining NRCs, a lot of eligible voters in Prison will be disenfranchised adding that Prisoners just like any other citizens have the

right to exercise their democratic right to vote in the 2021 elections. He said the reduction in the number of days allocated by ECZ from 60 to 30 days for voter registration requires that the issuance of NRCs in correctional facilities should be treated as an urgent matter. Government intends to issue 1, 500, 000 national registration cards during the 2020 mobile registration exercise with the first phase running up to the second week of September covering Luapula, Northern, North-Western, Copperbelt and Eastern provinces.

A TRIPARTITE meeting between Ministry of Finance, Energy and Water Development has been convened to consider reviewing electricity tariffs for water utility companies in the country. ZANIS reports that this follows President Edgar Lungu's directive to the respective Ministries after a report on challenges affecting utility companies was submitted during a cabinet meeting on Monday this week. Speaking during a briefing

LECTURERS and unionised workers at Nkumbi International College in Mkushi have staged a goslow to press for their delayed four months salaries. The situation affected the operations of the college while students’ lessons were disrupted. According to reliable source, despite getting grant from government, the management had not informed lecturers and other workers, who had not been paid their

salaries for four months running. Mkushi District Commissioner (DC) Emmanuel Sinkonde had to rush to the scene io calm down participants of the go-slow. In an interview, Mr Sinkonde confirmed that the board and management had not paid workers for their dues. The DC said he had a successful meeting with both the union and management staff and advised that salaries should be paid immediately. Mr Sinkonde said he directed the management to

Electricity tariffs for water utilities under review when he visited Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation (NWSS) Company in Kitwe, Minister of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection, Jonas Chanda disclosed that the increased tariffs have greatly impacted on the performance of the utility companies

Dear editor

UPND MUST APOLOGISE TO THE RWANDESE COMMUNITY Dear editor,

T

HE complaint made by the UPND Leadership with regard to the presence of Rwandese businesses in Kabwe Central Province is most unfortuate considering that Rwandese have been in Zambia for many year now. We find the comment made by Mr. Isaac Kambunji, the Kabwe UPND Information and Publicity Secretary, to be reckless, careless and must be condemned as it borders on diplomatic relations with Rwanda, the United Nations. The presence of Rwandese busineses in Zambia is well documented in the history books. Such comments have a potential to cause panic, entice local residents to loot shops, businesses including homes belonging to Rwandese nationals. It is our understanding that the UPND as a party in waiting to form government, they must exhibit exemplary leadership in the way they conduct themselves when speaking on national matters. It is not anything that must be said without analyzing the consequences of such complaints made in public. What is he suggesting? Is the UPND saying

Rwandese nationals must stop their businesses in Kabwe? What point was the UPND Official trying to advance? He must be aware that Zambia is a free market economy, any nationality is free to conduct business anywhere in all the ten provinces of Zambia. Our Team of Analysts are of the view that the UPND National Leadership must clear up this mess created by Mr. Kambunji before it is misunderstood by the Rwandese community including other interested groups. Keeping quite over this matter is likely to be taken that the UPND once forming government, legislations will be enacted to restrict foreign nationals from conducting businesses in Zambia. At the peak of ritual killers about two years ago, Rwandese nationals had

their shops looted on mere suspcious that they were involved in those barbaric acts. Mr. Kambunji, is behaving like some South African nationals who complain that foreign nationals are taking away their jobs in their own countries, to avenge for that they resort to xenophobic attacks against other African nationalities. Most of us have read and seen how xenophobic attacks in the rainbow nation led to death, homeless, lost of property, displacement and many untold misery to non South African nationals living in that Country. The UPND in Kabwe must better ways of politics than targetting the Rwandese community. Zambians must compete with Rwandese, this is about having the right business mind in a competitive environment.

In conclusion, our Team is of the view that instead of complaining about the influx of Rwandese in the province, it is high time, we Zambians engaged our African brothers to learn how they manage their businesses from owning one small shop to having a wholesale shop and expanding their businesses to other provinces. Businesses run by Rwandese nationals in both residential and densely populated settlements actually have adopted so well with local people such that we have not received or heard complaints besides what Mr. Kambunji's complaint. Rwandese nationals and local people have established brotherly relationships that must be maintained. Rwandese nationals through their businesess are keeping Zambia's wheels of commerce to be rolling through and through. Mr. Kambunji and the UPND must apologise to the Rwandese community in Zambia. The UPND national Leadership need to gag and monitor what is said to the public by their party Leaders. Friday Analysis The Speech Analysis

JUST held a very successful meeting with Comrade Kaweche Kaunda representing the family of His Excellency President Dr Kenneth Kaunda. The meeting was held to iron out issues that have arisen following my comments targeted at a specific member of the Kaunda family. We have both agreed that the misunderstandings arose from the desperate efforts by some individuals to twist and manipulate the true spirit in which I issued the comments. It is gratifying that with today’s meeting, the long held family ties between the Kaundas and the Lusambos will continue to flourish. To the purveyors of fake news and propaganda, I wish to inform

Tribal politics out Dear Editor, I will be the first one to admit that there will always be some unhappy insects at every corner of our planet, Zambia included. But to resort to insulting those in power to express your unhappiness is probably the worst form of primitivity. My fear however is that as we get closer to 2021,our year of general elections, the situation might get really nasty. Many so-called political party leaders will develop loose mouths and become prized insultants. People should quickly realize that there can only be one leader in State House at a particular time. Those who think they can only earn plot one through insults should be told in no uncertain language that politics is about sharing workable ideas as the nation struggles to develop economically.

Zambia is a Christian nation which should not only observe but practice high moral standards. This also means that those who practice tribalism are equally political lame ducks which should not be entertained by all well-meaning Zambians who totally cherish peace in the nation. Zambians will not eat insults and want leaders with workable ideas to take them to the promised land. They want leaders who can help turn their abundant natural resources into money for their well-being. So as we approach 2021, my earnest appeal is to politicians to be levelheaded and practice issue-based politics. Anything else will not do because the peace we have so far enjoyed may be lost and put future generations in jeopardy. Jay Bond, Lusaka

Nakonde robbery suspected master mind remanded By MULENGA MUSONDA

JASON Simbeye the man alleged to have orchestrated a robbery and got away with over K800,000 cash in Nakonde has continued to appear in the Nakonde Magistrates Court as the Court awaits for instructions. Simbeye 31 is jointly charged with Francis Kalengo 47 of Lusaka's Matero Township with one count of aggravated Robbery contrary to section 294 of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia. Allegations are that Simbeye a resident of Chipata jointly and

whilst acting with Kalengo a Businessman of Lusaka, robbed Omari Francis out of K816,170 Cash. The charge further alleges that before or after such robbery, the two used or threatened to use actual violence on Francis in order to retain the stolen money. The alleged incident is said to have happened on 10th July 2020 in Nakonde district of Muchinga Province. When the matter came up for mention before Resident Magistrate George Banda, the State informed the Court that instructions on how to proceed with the matter had not yet been issued by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution's. The Court adjourned the matter of the two in absentia to August 21 for another mention and possible committal to the High Court. The two are still remanded in custody.

TOLL RECEIPTS FORGERY LANDS 3 IN COURT By MULENGA MUSONDA

T

HREE men in Muchinga Province have appeared in the Nakonde Magistrates Court charged with 13 Counts, among them forging Road Toll Receipts and Theft involving over $430,000. Temba Mulako, 28, an Operations Manager, Titus Kaponda, 32, his Assistant and Felix Kaonga, 31, a Messenger and all employees of Tefami Construction and Supplies are facing 13 counts of Forgery, Uttering of False Documents, Fraudulent False Accounting and Theft by Servants contrary to the Laws of Zambia. It is alleged that the 3 jointly and whilst acting together stole $430,243 and K79,593 equivalent to K7,700,000 money that came into their

possession by virtue of their employer Tefami Construction. In four counts, Mulako and Kaponda are accused of forging payment vouchers purporting that they were issued by Tefami Construction when in fact not. The two are further accused of forging Road Toll Receipts purporting that they were issued by the Na-

Man, 57 gets 25 years imprisonment for defiling neighbours’ daughter THE Ndola High Court sitting in Kasama has sentenced a 57- year -old man of Kasama to 25-years-imprisonment with hard labour for defiling his neighbours’ seven- year- old daughter. Kelvin Simutunda has been convicted on one count of defilement of an underage child, and the court described the act as shameful and puzzling. ‘’The child is not only two years out of under-five- card, but was like a day old chick which could not be feasted on until fully grown,” the court wondered. The court has wondered where some men got the continued inhuman behaviour and sexually gratified themselves with children who are meant to be cared for, rather than being defiled. Sitting in Kasama, Ndola High Court Judge in -Charge, Ms. Justice Emelia Sunkutu said she has never witnessed one cooking a day old chick and consume it. Court records reveal that the conviction was according to Simutunda’s own plea of guilty

where he informed the court his manhood wasn’t functional when the matter came up for sentencing. ZANIS reports that the court records further revealed Simutunda claimed that because of the non-functioning of his manhood, he would not have defiled a child. And the court issued an order for a medical examination to be done at Kasama General Hospital, a matter that was later referred to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka as there was no urologists at the former. A medical report revealed that Simutunda after examination was found to be suffering from hydrocele of the left testicle and nothing was on record concerning his condition before the court. “I shall proceed going by evidence on record since court is not bound by medical opinion unless it is absolutely necessary for it to do so,” Ms. Justice Sunkutu said. She said that it showed that the convict pleaded guilty before the trial court and there was no suggestion whatsoever

that he was forced into tendering plea. Ms Justice Sunkutu said the court also did not show that the convict brought up the issue of the ailment before the trial court, therefore the fact that he raised the issue of a non-functional manhood at the high court was inconsequential. She also deemed the plea by the convict in the trial court to be unequivocal and the resultant conviction was therefore proper. She said that she allowed the examination of convict in interest of justice. “Since we have not received word from the hospital to the functionality of his manhood, I find it is not prejudicial to him for me to proceed with the sentence especially if indeed this was a problem that was of great concern to the convict, he would have brought it up in the court below,” She said. And in mitigation, Simutunda through his lawyer said that he was a first offender who readily pleaded guilty to the charge Ms Justice Sunkutu said she had heard the mitigation and

tional Road Fund Agency when in fact not. Kaonga is also facing four counts of uttering false documents namely Payment Vouchers and Road Toll receipts purporting that they were issued by Tefami Construction and NRFA respectively when in fact not. In two counts Mulako and Kaponda are accused of falsifying accounting details

considered that he had pleaded guilty. She said however, she did not need to remind Simutunda of the seriousness of the offence committed as defilement took a heavier weight because it offended morals of society. Ms. Justice Sunkutu added that sexual relations were there to be practiced between people of age. “It is therefore puzzling why grown men find sexual gratification in children. There are certain things in life that are just not acceptable,” stressed the Justice. She said that even nature said no to such practices as it was uncalled for. Ms Justice Sunkutu said she was basing her judgement on the fact even when people had sex, they had it at the right age and so men like Simutunda were a disgrace not only to men, but to society as a whole. “Do not take children’s innocence away before time. A girl of seven years old is just two years out of using an under five card,” She lamented. Ms. Justice Sunkutu said that the fact that the child was seven was aggravating and thus Simutunda should walk with his head hung for the rest of his life and then sentenced him to 25-years-imprisonment with hard labour. - ZANIS.

(Payment Vouchers )of Tefami Construction. The incidents are said to have happened in the early months of 2020 in Nakonde district . When the three appeared for plea before Resident Magistrate George Banda, Mulako who is also an IT specialist was visibly seen tightly holding a criminal thriller Novel by Bestselling Crime novelist John Grisham in his hands as he entered the dock. When the Court read all the charges to them, they strongly denied any wrong doing compelling the Court to record pleas of not guilty in all the 13 counts. The matter was adjourned to August 31 for commencement of trial. The three are on police bond.

Tanzanian dragged to court for counterfeit note, drugs By MULENGA MUSONDA

A 30-YEAR-OLD Tanzanian national has appeared in the Nakonde Magistrate Court charged with possession of a counterfeit note and Marijuana. Tony Kiyando a Mechanic from Tukuyu in Tanzania is charged with possession of a Counterfeit note and Trafficking in Psychotropic Substances contrary to the Laws of Zambia. Allegations in count one are that Kiyando had in his possession a K100 counterfeit note without authority. In count two, he is accused of trafficking in 78grammes of Marijuana, a herbal product of Cannabis Sativa without lawful authority or medical recommendation. The two incidents are said to have happened on 28th July 2020 in Nakonde district. When he appeared for plea before Resident Magistrate George Banda, the accused strongly distanced himself from both allegations. Magistrate Banda entered pleas of not guilty in respect to both counts and adjourned the matter to August 24 for trial. Kiyando was remanded in custody.

‘COVID RULES NEEDED’ …as FIFA rescues federations with USD$1.5 Million By MICHAEL MIYOBA

F

OOTBALL Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Andrew Kamanga says there is need to develop new regulations which will guide how football is managed during the Covid-19 pandemic period. Speaking during the FAZ Consultative Meeting with Super League and National Division One teams ahead of the 2020/2021 season, Kamanga said FAZ had engaged the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) who would collaborate with the FAZ medical committee in ensuring that testing protocols are dealt with before the new season kicks off. Meanwhile, Kamanga said clubs will receive their allocation of the USD$1.5

By MICHAEL MIYOBA ZANACO Football Club manager, Malon Kananda has advised CAF Inter-club championships envoys Nkana, Forest Rangers, Green Eagles and NAPSA Stars to begin immediate preparations to do better in the competitions. NKANA and debutant Forest Rangers will compete in the CAF Champions League while Green Eagles and NAPSA Stars will play in the CAF Confederations Cup. Kananda who witnessed

million FIFA covid-19 relief funds that will have the first batch disbursed by August month-end. Kamanga said FIFA will send the first disbursement of USD500,000 in August while the same amount would be received in January 2021. Kamanga said the remaining USD$500,000 will be exclusively for women football development while Super League teams will receive 33% of the USD$1 Million He said National Division One teams would get 15% with the developmental and provincial leagues receiving 10%. “With regard to financial support, I am glad to report that FIFA has given all the members a grant of USD1.5 million which will be paid towards end of August (USD

500, 000) and another (USD 500, 000) will be paid in January. Then there is USD500, 000 which is exclusively for the women’s leagues. In total there is USD500,000 for women and $1,000,000 for everybody else,” Kamanga said. Kamanga said FAZ had engaged the members to ensure that they laid down the roadmap for the 2020/2021 season and avoid the pitfalls experienced during the reconvened league that was prematurely ended in Week 27. The FAZ president also revealed that the executive committee has approved the acquisition of authorized wearable GPS trackers designed to analyze and improve the quality of football for all Super League and National First Division teams Under the FIFA Forward support program.

Kamanga also challenged the clubs to ensure that they did not disown decisions that they committed during the consultative process. Meanwhile, Kamanga refuted claims from some Super Division clubs who alleged that clubs were never consulted when deciding the fate of the league which was ended prematurely with Nkana crowned Champions. Kamanga said FAZ held two meeting in Lusaka and the Copperbelt where clubs were given an opportunity to raise concerns and also make suggestions. He reminded club officials to follow the right channels when raising their concerns noting that it was unfortunate that clubs would go to the press to express their disappointments.

FORMER 400 meters World champion Samuel Matete has challenged Zambia Athletics (ZA) president Elias Mpondela to prove that he indeed was not a member of the Association. And Matete has insisted that he was a member of the Association and that he was confident of contesting the presidency in the forthcoming election. Matete wondered why each time it was election period the issues of him not being a member of the Association resurfaced when he has always been appointed to serve in other capacities.

Relentless Bayern blitz Barca to reach semis GERMAN champions Bayern Munich utterly humiliated Barcelona with an extraordinary 8-2 demolition job on Friday that sent them through into the semifinals of the Champions League.

Thomas Mueller scored twice for a rampant Bayern, who led 4-1 after 31 astonishing minutes, as Lionel Messi and his teammates were condemned to a thrashing that felt like the end of an era for the illustrious Catalan club. “We feel devastated, although shame is the real word I’m looking for,” said Barca defender Gerard Pique, adding that the historic defeat called for urgent changes across the

ZANACO as they failed to secure qualification for CAF Games, said there is need for the four teams to prepare adequately for tournaments which feature the very best of African teams. In an interview, Kananda said the four envoys should aim high as they will be representing the country to maintain Zambia’s

four slots in the regional championships. “They should aim high and they should dream but dreaming comes with a lot of planning so for me I think we shouldn’t look at Rangers and NAPSA as individual teams. These are teams which are representing the country so for us we will just

wish them all the best because by them doing well in the tournament it guarantees us maintaining the four slots we have. “They should continue with the same spirit shown in the league because the confederations and the champions league are another level so in terms of preparations they need to start

"Let him prove to us that we are not members. Just the other time he appointed me coach and today he says I'm not a member. Mr Mpondela needs to stop this gimmick he is using to bar potential candidates," Matete said . “Every member should be free to contest as elections are held every four years .What have we done not to be part of that contest. What have we done that someone should bar us from standing . I'm confident that I will be on the ballot and looking forward to the election,” he said. And Matete has maintained that elections be held in October in line with the ZA constitution. ZA president Elias Mpondela was last week quoted saying that there was uncertainty to holding elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic and that the Association had no money.

I think the Covid issue did not help and if you look at how the team played before Covid 19, the team was doing very well in the league and continental games so finishing number six in the circumstances is acceptable by ZANACO and we will strategise and look forward to the 2020/2021 season,” Kananda

SPIRITUAL PADLOCK —PROPHET SPEAKS A

LTHOUGH Christianity has had a positive impact on the socio-cultural arena throughout the world, the growth of prophecy-led ministries has witnessed increasing claims of miracle working, some of which have elicited derision from both believers and nonbelievers. Now, there is a worrying sense that certain inexplicable healing ways or miracles are chipping away moral credibility of some real messengers of God’s work. Although there is no scientific evidence that prayers can directly combat diseases, unlike members of older denomina-

tions, Pentecostal and charismatic Christians believe that any Christian of faith potentially can be a prophet or a healer who has access to miracles and wondrous signs like speaking in tongues, raising people from the dead or reversing disease. A case in point is that of Harare-based and New Revelation Ministries founder Prophet Miracle Paul who courted the attention of the public with his “miracle hanger” also known as the “magnet” that is believed to have powers to restore broken marriages. According to Prophet Paul, the hanger, just like any ordinary wardrobe hanger, could

redeem and repair relationships that appeared broken beyond hope. The hanger has seen thousands who flocked to his church giving testimonies. Goodness and Mercy Ministries founder Prophet Tapiwa Freddy is also another Harare-based prophet who waded into the fray with his “spiritual spectacles” which he claimed enables him to accurately “predict” future events as well as see people’s past events. He defended his “spiritual spectacles” anointing saying it was God’s divine power that allows people to see their past, present and future, giving congregants the ability to see the spiritual world.

Man storms naked motherin-law’s bedroom

Husband discovers wife’s affair after spotting her in the act on Google Maps WHEN Google Maps launched back in 2005, it made the world a far smaller place. The tool allows users to visit almost any location on earth at ground level - although we almost invariably end up heading straight to our own home. It also captures images of people going about their daily lives, resulting in some hilarious photo fails and a few suspicious scenes, as reported by the Express. But one man was left heartbroken when the Street View tool captured his wife with another man and exposed her affair. The images, which went viral on Facebook, shows a row of benches on a pedestrianised path in Lima, the capital city of Peru. Sat on one of the benches is a woman wearing a black top and white shirt, with a man in a white jumper laid with his head in her lap. His face is obscured from

view and the woman has been blurred out, which is standard practice on Google Maps to protect people’s privacy. But it wasn’t enough to stop the woman’s husband from recognising her when he stumbled across the scene back in 2013, spotting her familiar outfit as he explored the streets. The husband reportedly confronted his wife over what he had seen and she admitted the affair before the couple later divorced. It’s not the first time someone has been left baffled by a finding on Google Maps, after one eagle-eyed user was left in stitches when they came across a funny sight in the US - and was kind enough as to share their findings online for the rest of us to see. Unfortunately for one woman, it just so happened that the Google car drove down her road at the exact moment she took a fall while digging around in her wheelie bin.

THE end of a relationship can expose many raw emotions and it becomes worse when someone feels like they have been robbed in the name of culture. That could be perfectly true for a Bulawayo man who could not stomach being divorced by his wife of 12 years when he reportedly followed her to her rural home where upon arrival, he stormed into his mother-in-law’s bedroom while she was stark naked and demanded that she pays him back his lobola money. As if that was not enough, the disgruntled man, Artwell Homera, from Gwabalanda, before he forcibly walked on his estranged wife Sekai Timothy’s mother in her birthday suit he had also threatened to commit suicide at their homestead. What reportedly ticked him off was that, Sekai dumped A MUM was left feeling ‘sick’ after spotting a ‘ghostly girl’ peering round the door of her son’s bedroom in the background of a family photo. Alice Martin, who said she’s dismissed unexplained events in her “creepy” flat for years, had been scrolling back through photos she had taken during lockdown when one detail caught her eye. The photo, taken in April, shows Alice smiling alongside her partner Tom Brown and son Louie - but behind them there appears to be a shadowy figure with long hair Mum-of-one Alice was left with chills after looking at the snap, saying she could make out a defined facial

him after he became jobless despite the fact that she (Sekai) was the one who allegedly got him fired from one of the leading supermarket chain stores in the city where he was a supervisor. According to evidence led at the Bulawayo Civil Court, where Sekai was seeking a restraining order against Homera, the couple broke up because of the latter’s abusive behaviour. “I was customarily married to Artwell Homera and we have two children together. He assaults and insults me in front of our children calling me a prostitute. When we were still staying together, he was not paying rentals, school fees for the children or even caring for them. He would come home very drunk and started being violent such that it was no longer safe for me to stay with him. The chil-

dren were also living in fear of their father,” protested Sekai. She said they tried to involve relatives and church elders to solve their marital disputes but to no avail. Explaining how Homera started reclaiming his lobola money back, Sekai said: “I need a protection order against him because when I left for my rural home in Mutorashanga together with the children he followed us. “He was also sending abusive text messages while, threatening to commit suicide at our homestead because he paid lobola for me and that he could not lose me just like that. He even forcibly went into my mother’s bedroom while she was naked and my mother had to scream and plead with him to leave and he refused. I had to call his brother to calm the situation.”

In his response, Homera accused Sekai of cheating on him adding that she dumped him because he was no longer employed. “I am not opposed to her application. When I went to her rural home, I was following my children. I even stayed there for two months. She is making this application because I found love messages in her phone which she was exchanging with her boyfriend. What also pains me is that she is the one who got me fired from my job. She is also abusing our children by forcing them to walk more than three kilometres from their homestead to sell tomatoes,” said a livid Homera. In her judgment presiding magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu ordered Homera not to insult, assault his ex-wife and visit her rural home or where she is now staying with her aunt.

Mum left feeling sick after spotting ‘ghost girl’ in background of family photo

Mum-of-one Alice Martin says she's experienced unexplained events in her flat for years - and noticed a shadowy figure in the background of a family photo which she says resembles a little girl

shape and an object being held in her hand. The 23-year-old immediately sent the image to her sister, adjusting the brightness on the photo for a better look - and jumped when what she believes to be an eye came into focus. A self-confessed sceptic when it comes to the paranormal, Alice said she cannot explain the shape as there was no furniture or items hanging on the door where the figure appears. Her son Louie has always slept in his parent’s room as

he could “never settle” in the bedroom where the eerie figure is claimed to have appeared, and Alice is relieved to have now moved to a new home. The care assistant from Somerset said: “I see a little girl with long hair, holding something. It makes me feel on edge. “I was saying to my partner that when I saw it I got sick. It’s not a nice thing. People are saying it looks like it’s good and it’s not there to harm me, but it puts me on edge a bit.

Meet female electrician Brendah Kalungulungu By TERENCE MISELO THE thought of having a female climb ladders to the roof top to either fix an electrical fault or perform some electrical wiring service could have been impossible ten years ago. This was mainly because certain jobs were believed to have been reserved for the male. Nevertheless, Brendah Kalungulungu is living testimony that women and girls can now perform any task believed to have been maledominated. She is a qualified electrician running her own electrical business and wants to be that inspirational person to the youth. Born in a family of three, Brendah said she chose to study electrical engineering beginning at a lower level but had bigger dreams. She said she comes from a humble background and faced a number of challenges but never gave up on her dream. “With me been a second child unfortunately my siblings and I grew up in separate homes because we lost our parents at tender ages,” she said.

“I come from a humble and respectful background all ,thanks to my uncle that raised me not until things become difficult for him financially at the time I completed my Grade12 at Kabulonga Girls Secondary School.” She said after that she started looking for jobs to enable her raise some money with an aim of going for any short course as a starting point considering her financial status. “ As I always never wanted to be lazy and wait to be given anything I needed, I always believed in trying my best to make sure I’m able to get what I needed, during the time I was trying to raise some cash I heard of the sponsorship offered by African Development Bank at Luanshya Technical and Business College,” she explained. “With a strong hope of being selected, I applied to do Electrical Engineering certificate level. It was indeed God’s connection that during my time in college, I stayed focused and performed extremely well despite being laughed at for going for such a career and how funny I would look in a work suit and big safety boots.”

Brendah then did her attachments at one of the biggest agriculture companies in Zambia. “ Waking up every morning knowing I’m going to climb ladders, enter ceiling boards, work with tools and manage all electrical maintenance was overwhelming for me but I love my job and I do it with so much joy,” she insists. “After my attachment contract ended, I tried applying for employment in various companies but nothing came through then I decided to open up a page on Facebook,”Brendah the female Electrician in Zambia”.” To date her page has been helpful and her biggest platform to advertise the works she does with the hope of getting new projects. “ I must say it was the most wonderful idea that I did that because through that page I have managed to get a number of projects from clients that believed in me. All thanks to them though I have challenges as sometimes I stay for a whole month without projects. However, God has been helpful,” she said, advising her fellow women and girls to use social media for a good

purpose. She also encourages young people to take up short course as a starting point which they can build on in future. “I would like to encourage the youth out there to take up even this little courses that seem to be just certificates cause indeed there are a starting point. Don’t listen to criticism and always stay focused, never mind getting dirty as long as you are able to get a little out of your hard work,” advised Brendah saying that for her, “Electrical engineering is fun and I am always wishing I at some point, get to advance my career and hopefully one day become an Electrical Lecturer.”

area, Mr. Munyamani’s name is now a household one in the area, as his livestock and crop enterprise is feeding and creating sustainable incomes for people. A father of 15 children from two wives, Mr. Munyamani has over 300 cattle, 120 hacters of tomatoes, 70 hacters of fresh maize, an active fish pond, countless number of small livestock,a hammer mill and mechanised farming activities. According to Mr. Munyamani, he started as a small farmer in 2000, with only 25 lines of tomatoes containing 7,000 plants whose first yields gave him the motivation to expand his produc-

tion and was also able to diversify his agricultural activities. A visit to one of the Munyamani Farms, found the farmer’s first wife Margaret attending to scores of women who troop from Lusaka, a one and a half hour drive to Mulela village to order the fresh maize for reselling in the capital city. Margaret 35, explained that hard work and working collaboratively with her husband is the reason behind their success in the Agriculture sector and that apart from the present activities going on at their two farms which are just a few meters apart, they look to embark on producing many

more crops which include watermelon and pumpkins. At the time Margaret was supervising the farm, Mr. Munyamani was also at the other farm where he was supervising his 34 farm workers as they harvested tomatoes in readiness for sale the next day in Lusaka. Mr. Munyamani explained that he has been able to survive many challenges encountered in his farming business due to the diversification policy he has adopted. He says sometimes when one area of production is performing poorly; he gets money earned from the other venture to booast the affected enterprise.

Eighteen year old Sipiwe Munyamani is Mr. Munyamani’s daughter and his already in tune with the Agriculture enterprise at her parents farm and helps in either looking at the huge hacterage of either maize and tomatoes as well as livestock at the farm. The girl who says she would rather remain at the farm than in the city where he father owns a number of houses plans to study Agriculture having completed school last year. As for Mr. Munyama, his next plan is to procure a centre pivot as he plans expand his production further.

orld Ranger Day falls on 31 July each year and celebrates the accomplishments and work done by wildlife rangers around the world. It also honors the memory of those killed or injured in the line of duty.

In commemoration of this important day in conservation, we spoke to two of Zambia’s most accomplished wildlife rangers, both of whom have received international recognition for their contribution to safeguarding the country’s national parks and wildlife. Mr. Solomon Chidunuka, the current Senior Warden in Muchinga Province, is one of the country’s most celebrated rangers, with an illustrious career that spans decades and has seen him work in many protected areas in Zambia since joining the Department of National Parks and Wildlife in 1989. Some of the areas he has been deployed to include Kafue National Park, Lower Zambezi National Park, East Musalangu Game Management Area and Sichifulo Mulobezi Game Management Area, among others. One of his greatest achievements came when he was promoted to the position of Area Warden for Lower Zambezi ecosystem after working as a Park Ranger at Luangwa wildlife Sector for 11 years. “This was a period of extremely high poaching of elephants in central and western parts of Lower Zambezi where each year we could record 60 to 70 elephants poached in the area”, he said. He added “I told my officers that we needed to reduce this poaching by 10% and so I put on my boots and combat gear and started leading field patrols. By end of the

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY COMMEMORATING WORLD RANGER DAYELEPHANT WITH ZAMBIA’S AWARD-WINNING OF DURING RANGERS HOUR GOLDEN first year we only had 10 elephants poached and by third year only 3 elephants were poached.” His success against poachers and his contribution to conserving wildlife caught the attention and admiration of many conservationists. In 2017, he received the Tusk Wildlife Ranger Award, making him the first Zambian recipient of the prestigious award that gives international recognition to the men and women who face danger every day to protect Africa’s wildlife. His message to other rangers in commemorating their special day is, “Discipline, hard work and commitment towards work are very important, as you work for present and future generations to enjoy having this beautiful wildlife.”

Benson Kanyembo is another easily recognizable name in Zambian’s conservation circles, having received his Tusk Wildlife Ranger Award in 2019. He was described by the organizers of the award as “a ranger’s ranger; physically tough, incredibly hardworking and resilient without seeking recognition or reward.” He started his conservation career in 1994 with North Luangwa Conservation Project. In 1997 Benson joined the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Service (DNPWS), as a community scout. His commitment to work saw him ascended the ranks to Senior Wildlife Policer. “My most exciting moment was in 2003 when I became a qualified Wildlife Police Officer under Zambia Wildlife Authority and was selected to be one of 60 scouts that were trained to be“My most exciting moment was come the country’s in 2003 when I became a qualified Wildlife Police Officer under first Rhino ProtecZambia Wildlife Authority and was tion Unit (RPU).” selected to be one of 60 scouts This was when that were trained to become the black rhinos were country’s first Rhino Protection being reintroduced Unit (RPU).” in Zambia after Benson Kanyembo having been extinct in the country due to rampant poaching. After almost 2 decades in North Luangwa, he moved to South Luangwa National Park in Mfuwe. In 2009 he joined Conserva-

Solomon and FW de Klerk tion South Luangwa (CSL), a Mfuwe-based non-profit organization that supports community-based scouts to help the Department of National Parks and Wildlife protect the Luangwa Valley ecosystem. In his current role as Law Enforcement Advisor at CSL, Mr. Kanyembo leads a team of 65 well trained, well equipped and highly disciplined scouts who risk their lives in their daily fight against poaching, sometimes spending up to 20 days on patrols in tough conditions and harsh weather. He now uses his experience as a former wildlife police officer to identify areas where conservation organizations like CSL can assist and work with the DNPW in protecting Zambia’s wildlife and ecosystems.

“In 2019 we increased our already significant support to DNPW’s anti-poaching programs by recruiting new scouts and called for better utilizing resources which led to DNPW and CSL patrol efforts to increase by more than 100%, Snare recoveries increased by 16%, arrests increased by 43%, and there has been an overall reduction in poaching.” He has a special message for rangers and scouts, “Remain committed to your noble duty, despite the risks, hardships and limited resources to support your work.” In Mfuwe many activities including identifying and awarding the Ranger and patrol teams of the month, and a quiz on wildlife conservation have been lined up in celebration of this year’s World Ranger Day.

What is apparent from conversations with the two men is that wildlife rangers and their work are seldom appreciated, even though they are the first line of defense when it comes to protecting our natural resources and cultural heritage. Sadly, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reported that at least 149 rangers were lost in 2019 alone. Rangers play an important role in conservation as they dedicate themselves to protecting the planet’s vulnerable species and fragile ecosystems. They often work for little reward while being exposed to hazardous environmental conditions such as floods, fires, illnesses. Sometimes rangers have to face dangerous animals and even armed poachers.

‘BREAKTHROUGH’ TREATMENT SLASHES VIRUS DEATH RISK: STUDY A

N aerosol-based treatment could drastically reduce the number of new coronavirus patients dying from the disease or requiring intensive care, according to preliminary results released Monday by a British biotech firm. In a randomised trial of 100 patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19, those who received an inhaled formula of the protein interferon beta were at 79 percent lower risk of developing severe disease compared to those who received a placebo. They were also more than twice as likely to make a full recovery compared with the control group. The firm behind the treatment, known as SNG001, said the preliminary results suggested “a major breakthrough” in the pandemic. “We are all delighted with the trial results announced today, which showed that SNG001 greatly reduced the number of hospitalised COVID-19 patients who progressed from requiring oxygen to requiring ventilation,” said Richard Marsden, CEO of Synairgen. The results published Monday have not yet been peer-reviewed

and the sample size is relatively small. But if confirmed the treatment could revolutionise the way COVID-19 is dealt with in hospitals. ‘Game changer’ Interferon beta is a naturally occurring protein, commonly used to treat multiple sclerosis. Natural fight against infection It forms part of the body’s natural fight against infection, and the novel coronavirus suppresses its production in an attempt to evade an immune response. Delivering the protein directly into the lungs of patients is designed to trigger a robust immune response to the virus, even in patients whose immune system is already weakened by infection. “The results confirm our belief that interferon beta... has huge potential as an inhaled drug to be able to restore the lung’s immune response,” said Tom Wilkinson, professor or respiratory medicine at the University of Southampton. He said the trial showed SNG001 was effective in “enhancing protection, accelerating recover and countering the impact of SARS-CoV-2 virus.”

Naveed Sattar, professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow said the new treatment “could be a game changer”. “With small (trial) numbers comes less certainty on the true level of benefit, or whether benefits vary between people with differing risk characteristics,” said Sattar, who was not involved in the research. “Such work would require a larger trial but, even so, these results are very exciting.” There are currently a number of treatments available for patients hospitalised with COVID-19. Last month a Britain-based team of researchers lead by the University of Oxford announced they had successfully reduced the risk of death among seriously ill patients by administering the commonly available steroid dexamethasone. Several countries have also issued the emergency authorisation for treatment with anti-viral remdesivir. - DAILY NATION, Kenya

STUDY: Virus immunity may disappear within months

P

ATIENTS who recover from coronavirus infections may lose their immunity to reinfection within months, according to research released on Monday that experts said could have a "significant" influence on how governments manage the pandemic.

In the first study of its kind, a team led by researchers from King's College London examined the levels of antibodies in more than 90 confirmed virus patients and how they changed over time. Blood tests showed even individuals with only mild COVID-19 symptoms mounted some immune response to the virus. Of the study group, 60 percent showed a "potent" viral response in the first few weeks after infection. However, after three months only 16.7 percent had maintained high levels of COVID-

19-neutralising antibodies, and after 90 days several patients had no detectable antibodies in their bloodstream. When the body encounters an external danger such as a virus, it mobilises cells to track down and kill the culprit. As it does so, it produces proteins known as antibodies that are programmed to target the specific antigen the body is fighting, like a key cut for a particular lock. As long as someone has enough antibodies, they will be able to snub out new infections, giving them immunity. But Monday’s research suggests immunity cannot be taken for granted and may not last more than a few months, as is true with other viruses such as influenza. PLAYING THE LOTTERY Experts said the findings may change how governments plan for the next phase of the pandemic, including how they fund and organise vaccine research and development. “This is an important

study that starts to define the longer-term dynamics of the antibody response to SARSCoV-2,” said Lawrence Young, professor of Molecular Oncology at the University of Warwick, using the full name of the virus strain. “It further emphasises the need for us to better understand what a protective im-

mune response looks like if we are to develop an effective vaccine,” said Young, who was not involved in the research. James Gill, an honorary Clinical Lecturer at Warwick Medical School, said the research reiterated the need for everyone to continue taking measures to mitigate the virus spreading, particularly at the start of Europe’s holiday season. “In the same way that these patients were surprised to have antibodies to COVID19, we should NOT be surprised if any protective benefit is mild, or at least transient,” he said. “If you played the lottery and won £10, you wouldn’t immediately think that you had acquired increased natural luck, and used your life savings to buy further lottery tickets. “Even those with a positive antibody test -- especially those who cannot account for where they may have been exposed -- should continue to use caution, social distancing and appropriate mask use.” DAILY NATION, Kenya
