FOREIGN GOLD INVASION CONTINUES ILLEGALITY

Government must flush out foreigners who are illegally mining gold. The resource will be depleted if the continued illegality is left unchecked

CHIEF LUCHEMBE

By SILUMESI MALUMO THE continued gold invasion by foreigners is annoying because Zambians stand to lose out from the new mineral discovery if the scourge is not curtailed, Chief Luchembe of Mpika has said. A Tanzanian and five Zambians were arrested on Friday in connection with illegal trade of alluvial gold in Mwinilunga, barely a month after a Chinese national was nabbed for illicit miing of the commodity in Rufunsa. REFORMING INMATES THROUGHOUT the years, there have been reports of how some newly freed prisoners find themselves behind bars a few hours, or days after roaming freely. There has never been a satisfactory explanation for this “relapse” among the released prisoners. After all, when one is given a custodial sentence after conviction, the belief is that time spent locked up would give someone a chance to reflect on their conduct and make amends. It certainly brings into question the effectiveness of custodial sentences, whether they are meant to help people reform or become hardened criminals. This could explain why President Edgar Lungu yesterday directed the directorate of corrections and extension services of the Zambia Correctional Service to ensure closer monitoring of former inmates when they are discharged to assess the effectiveness of the correctional methods in use in correctional facilities. It certainly does not show that the Zambia Correctional Services is helping people change when the public reads of ex-inmates committing crimes immediately after they have been freed. Although there are no statistics to show the numbers of inmates who have failed to return to normal life, there has been a public perception that the figures could be high. The President is right to be concerned because his government has initiated policy changes to reform the manner that prisons are managed. "In 2016, my government transformed the Zambia Prison Service into a Correctional Service. This transformation was aimed at moving away from retribution against offenders, to correcting them and helping them become better citizens," Mr Lungu said. He said the benefit of this are empowered citizens with skills and leading productive lives once discharged from the Correctional Service. These are the ideals which the whole nation embraces, that those who serve time in correctional facilities come out equipped with survival skills so that they could become better citizens. While we agree that conditions in these correctional facilities are harsh, the bottom line is that those who are serious about making amends would make the best of their incarceration. This is particularly so for those without skills. They can resolve to learn a trade – carpentry for example - which could help them start afresh once they are released. Could it be that even after learning a trade inmates are not helped when they are freed? These are the points that the correctional services must look at, keeping track of ex inmates and seeing how they are being rehabilitated in society. It could be that some fail to live with the stigma associated with having served time in a correctional facility, meaning that society needs to be sensitised and help them reclaim their place in society. But definitely as President Lungu said, the Zambia Correctional Services needs to review its operations and assess the effectiveness of its reform agenda for inmates. After all, inmates have now won the right to vote and elect.

I

MAY not be the only online media reader who was shocked at seeing the video clip of a stage-managed protest by youths recorded in the outskirts of Lusaka, less than a month after so much good, contentment, happiness, and entrepreneurial empowerment had been reported as taking place in the country. What our elders of yesteryear said has been always true, that beneath every decorated grave lies a mere skull and other bones. In Zambia there is online media-influenced resistance to the PF alleged corruption and nepotism among politically-exposed families which has seemingly resulted in the emergence of rich local oligarchies. This resistance is from both the opposition and ruling parties’ sections of the political spectrum. Many, particularly the youth are disillusioned that despite having high qualifications they are roaming the streets – jobless! Look at it this way – according to the Sports and Youth Ministry officials, Youth Development Fund (YDF) has been portrayed as a success story, but this complexion was changed completely. It was blemished by the recent youth protest video filmed in the woods of Lusaka which went viral on social media. Covertly, the UPND media team was believed to be in complicit with the youthful protesters. And it was in overdrive too, trying to portray Zambia as a country where corruption has become the face of the PF-led government, hoping that its ill-intended online disinformation will eventually bring the PF government to its knees and force the ruling party out of office. Social media was thus awash with allegations of graft, stagnant service delivery in all municipalities and negative audit reports from the Auditor General, bad governance, a poor education system, rising unemployment, the rising cost of living and mismanagement of the country’s debt-distressed situation, soon-to-be-felt effects of climate change and Covid-19 crises.

How did YDF managers get it so wrong on youths’ empowerment? All seems quiet now, but when unemployed youths clamour for jobs, will they be offered entrepreneurial empowerment? Economic growth that does not include the youth is a sham and should be sceptically viewed. Obviously, President Edgar Lungu reacted quickly to the growing disaffection among the youth by tasking some of his ministers to engage youths critically to address their grievances. The ministers who were tasked for this probe, included Information Minister Dora Siliya, Sports and Youth Minister Emmanuel Mulenga, Community Development and Social Services Minister Kampamba Mulenga Chewe,

ernment in 2021. Lately, I have been wondering why it was that the youth protest organised on the same day, got more media attention than the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Government that commenced the virtual consultative and information exchange mission for Zambia which was described by the IMF team as the most important stage of its relationship with Zambia since 2017. This is all the more strange if we consider that historically, politically and socio-economically the Zambian government and IMF engagements could serve as a panacea for our unemployed youths’ predicament. If we get

Livestock and Fisheries Minister Professor Nkandu Luo, and Gender Minister Elizabeth Phiri. Approvingly, though, the question that begs honest answers is: How did YDF managers get it so wrong on youths’ empowerment? For an honest answer, there is no better place to go than what the Auditor General himself says in the reports. Clearly, though, the stage-managed protest by the youth was nothing other than a big online media-hyped public relations exercise for the UPND and its leader. Perhaps next time, the rabble-rousing duo Pilato and Maiko Zulu, should be wiser not to believe hook, line and sinker, the nice things UPND leaders were promising them – about never to treat young people as enemies to be crushed when their party, in the unlikely event, formed gov-

the Zambian government and IMF engagements right, we can get our unemployed youths’ situation right. Related to this, I have also been wondering why it was that youths should have faith in UPND, or believe that there was a consensual consciousness that looked beyond ethnic differences and individual leader’s presidential ambitions to find some scrap of common humanity? This is at a time when its young members themselves were struggling within its party-structures for lack of intraparty-initiated youth empowerment programmes – leading to its elected councillors and others massively continue defecting to PF. Moreover, why should youths have hope in the UPND that it would form government in 2021 when for nearly two decades it has failed to do so?

Albeit, in 2016 UPND politicians in Southern, Western and North-Western provinces managed to convince a significant number of young people to vote for the first time in the general elections. And there was an overwhelming first-time voter turnout in those three UPND strongholds. Whether this happened because of the ethnocentric persuasion techniques of UPND presidential candidate – Hakainde Hichilema – is a discussion for another day. But the mere fact that youths could be motivated to see politics as a vehicle for fundamental and profound change is cause for concern. Youth development is important for Zambia. Perhaps that is why young people are showing signs of being interested in politics this time around – their patience is running out with high levels of unemployment. This does not necessarily mean that they will be rushing to join political parties however – despite the choice on offer. But this has not stopped parties looking for new avenues of expression. For instance, there is evidence that Zambian politicians seem to have learnt from the American experience. Take the social networking site, Twitter, for example. President Donald Trump used it effectively to lure the youth into voting for him in 2016. Many politicians including the UPND leaders are now on Facebook/Twitter/ WhatsApp. They interact with their supporters through these networking platforms. Despite dabbling in technology and trying to appear hip, political parties must still attend to youths’ urgent needs. Top of the to-do list is creating jobs, reducing social media abuse levels and combating the Aids epidemic and Covid-19 pandemic that are reportedly claiming lives every day in Zambia – many of them young.

Foreign gold invasion continues From page 1

A Tanzanian and five Zambians were arrested on Friday in connection with illegal trade of alluvial gold in Mwinilunga, barely a month after a Chinese gold was nabbed for illicit miing of the commodity in Rufunsa. “Government must flush out foreigners who are illegally mining gold. The resource will be depleted if the continued illegality is left unchecked,” Chief Luchembe said in an interview yesterday. The traditional leader said it was high time Government took the matter seriously if the country was to benefit from the resource. Chief Luchembe said Government should not ignore the matter at hand because it would disadvantage the country from earning much needed revenue. He said the resource was the only hope to improve the country’s economy which was facing serious challenges. Chief Luchembe was concerned with the continued illegal exploitation of the resource by foreigners was a source of concerned which needed to be addressed.

He was reacting to arrests made by police in Mwinilunga involving a Tanzanian and five Zambians in connection with illegal trade of alluvial gold. Chief Luchembe said this development was saddening and that it was important that the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development took serious action against the perpetrators. “We have developed a situation in our country which is very sad in my view, we only want the President to always come in. I think we have enough constitutional offices which are mandated to see these minerals. They can do a good job without being commanded by the Head of State but I think they are too relaxed. It is absurd that we should let people illegally mine this gold which God has given us. This gold can uplift our economy, how can we come out of the economic mess if we are failing to protect our resources. “Let make an appeal to the President to make a directives to these ministries so that they start paying attention to what is happening and see what they can do,” Chief Luchembe said.

GBM calls for teamwork in PF ranks By NOEL IYOMBWA

SUPPORT efforts of structures by mobilising the party in all corners of Central Province, Patriotic Front vice national chairperson for mobilisation, Geoffrey Mwamba said yesterday. Speaking when he met mobilisation committee. members in Katuba, Mr Mwamba said their key role was to mobilise the party in all provinces so that come 2021, it wins elections. He said the primary objective of mobilisation committees was to achieve one thing, which was to win the 2021 elections. Mr Mwamba advised members to avoid infighting, saying that they should concentrate at mobilising more people. He however observed that there was a tendency by some committees of not informing district structures when going in an area for party activities. “Let’s avoid fighting within ourselves, let’s work together because we are one. There are some committee members going into mobilisation without notifying the structures in districts. It’s a good thing but let’s notify our colleagues because we are fighting for one goal. “Committees should be informing structures in districts whenever they are going for mobilisation programmes. “Western Province has done well in terms of unity and coordination, we are fighting for one goal which is for the party to get stronger so that come 2021 President Edgar Lungu gets the presidency,” he said. Mr Mwamba said the President has on several occasions urged members to unite to strengthen the party.

THE UPND is in shock that its councilors who are resigning are finding Patriotic Front as the number one choice despite its malicious propaganda, Chinsali Member of Parliament Kalalwe Mukosa has said. And Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo said he was happy and proud to serve the country under President Lungu owing to his unwavering commitment and dedication to providing decent accommodation to men and women in uniform.

Mr Kampyongo said the police officers in Mazabuka had borne the brunt of poor housing for a long time, as most of the houses in the camp were in a deplorable state. Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police, Kakoma Kanganja said the houses would go a long way in improving their work culture and motivate officers to work extra hard.

… Over mass resignations and defections of its councillors

councillors were resigning because of the ills and selfishness they had observed in the party. He said PF members were busy mobilising for the 2021 elections but not using any irresponsible or careless tactics. Several UPND councillors have resigned in the recent past especially in the opposition party’s strongholds, citing poor leadership and selfishness. And the UPND on the Copperbelt has described its members that are defecting from the party as petty and attention seekers. It’s provincial information

publicity secretary, Kennedy Kalunga said in an interview in Kitwe that the defectors were not giving a true picture of why they were defecting to other political parties but told lies. Mr Kalunga challenged the defectors to tell the truth regarding their complaints and reasons for their defections. “Our party is one that embraces and listens to everyone regardless of their position, so the issue of them not being well taken care of or not having been paid attention to is neither here nor there. “Let them give true

reasons as to why they are defecting unlike seeking attention in such a manner,” Mr Kalunga challenged. He said that their reasons could not hold water as everything surrounding their issues was nothing but fake. He claimed that most of them were defecting after losing elections at district level the situation he said was not right. Mr Kalunga also claimed that the party was aware that the ruling PF was inducing by- elections across the country, the reason he said the members were defecting due to different promises they get.

Opposition leaders selfish - YALI difficult for them to agree on one candidate. He insisted that there would be no miracle for them to turn around and rally behind one candidate. National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader, Chishimba Kambwili, said the opposition must unite and field one candidate remove the PF. Mr Kambwili appealed to the opposition leaders to unite and consider fielding one candidate for 2021. He said the opposition

was determined to unseat the ruling PF for the good of the nation. But Mr Mwanza said it was shocking that Mr Kambwili could even think that the crop of opposition leaders could come together and field one presidential candidate. Mr Mwanza said what happened in Malawi was not possible in Zambia due to selfish opposition leaders in the country. He said that Zambians still remember how the UPND and the PF formed a pact

to kick out the MMD under the former President Rupiah Banda, but failed. He said the pact crumbled because UPND president Hakainde Hichilema exhibited selfish interests at the time. “We know that everyone in the opposition especially these opposition political parties like UPND, NDC are power hungry. They all want to ensure that they are the ones who can go to State House come rain come sunshine.

Nevers Mumba’s treacherous, says Rev Lungu By KETRA KALUNGA IT is treacherous for MMD president Nevers Mumba to insinuate that only a righteous man can rule Zambian sincerely when leadership comes from God, Evangelical Youth Alliance president, Reverend Moses Lungu has said. Rev. Lungu said in an interview that according to the bible no man, including the Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) president, Dr Mumba was righteous because as humans we are bound to fall short of the glory of God. He described as regrettable and misleading the utterances by Dr Mumba considering that they were coming from a man of God. “What does he mean when he says a man upright should lead the country, no man is upright not even the most holy reverend, all human are bound to fall,” said Rev. Lungu. Rev Lungu said no man could be a President of a given country unless God allowed it. He said it does not justified for a citizen of any given country to rebel against the leadership that God had allowed to be in power. Rev. Lungu has since challenged Dr Mumba to leave the pulpit and become a full time politician because he had along the way lost the spirit of clergymanship. And Rev. Lungu has questioned the spiritual position of Dr. Mumba while holding on as MMD president. He alleged that Dr. Mumba had been using his spiritual

Dr Mumba position to push his political agenda. Rev. Lungu said the move to form a coalition party with the blessings of his church was purely to push his political ambitions which was later viewed as betrayal by members of the church. The clergy said Dr. Mumba has been the betrayer and did betray the Christian Coalition as its president at the time to the MMD. “What does he mean when he says a man upright should lead the country, no man is upright not even the most holy reverend, all humans are bound to fall,” said Rev. Lungu. He said it was this treacherous move which got him the position of Vice President to late President Levy Mwanawasa which was short lived. Rev. Lungu has challenged Dr. Mumba to lead by example as a man of God by playing a supportive role to President Lungu as ordained leader of the country unlike always antagonising his leadership.

By PRISCA LUMINGU-BANDA in Monze PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has directed the directorate of corrections and extension services of the Zambia Correctional Service to ensure closer monitoring of former inmates when discharged to assess the effectiveness of the correction methods in use in correctional facilities. President Lungu said this when he commissioned 70 Zambia Correctional Service housing units in Monze yesterday. “In 2016, my government transformed the Zambia Prison Service into a Correctional Service. This transformation was aimed at moving away from retribution against offenders, to correcting them and helping them become better citizens,” Mr Lungu said. He said the benefit of this are empowered citizens with skills and leading productive lives once discharged from the Correctional Service. Association president Augustine Mubanga said a number of contractors had failed to mobilise and start works because the mining firm had not given a clear picture on how they can operate in the new contracts. Lungu orders correctional services to review rehab ops housing units that Government must construct to address the shortage of the decent housing for security officers under the Ministry of Home Affairs. He said provision of housing and essential tools and equipment was of course expensive but however the cost of insecurity and lawlessness was worse “It is commendable that the first phase of this housing project of which 70 housing units are part of is scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2020, one year ahead of schedule. This is remarkable by any standards as phase one had 53 sites spread across six provinces and 18 districts in our country,” Mr Lungu said. The President said Government remained steadfast in delivering all the 12, 000 housing units in a phased approach to avoid choking the

Treasury. He also said the agricultural equipment was being provided to enable the Zambia Correctional Service like all defence and security institutions contribute to food production and thus enhancing food security in the country. Mr Lungu also directed the Correctional Service to increase the production of cereals and legumes that they are producing. “Boost particularly the production of wheat, maize and soya beans by no less than 100 percent by 2021/22 agricultural season,” he said. Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo said construction of houses for men and women in uniform would change the face of Monze and the country at large. Mr Kampyongo said the on-going modernisation of the

security institutions and services encompassed provision of decent housing, equipment and in-service training for officers has brought dignity to the men and women in uniform. He also warned those trying to cause anarchy on tribal lines that they risk being jailed saying no tribe should feel superior to others. And speaking earlier, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Lee Ji said the peace Zambia had enjoyed would enable it to attract foreign investment as could be demonstrated by the direct investment China has made to Zambia totalling U$1.95 from February to April 2020. Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General Dr Chisela Chileshe thanked President Lungu for his commitment to better the lives of the men and women in uniform.

Let MPs play their role, debating Bill 10 - Lusaka PF By SILUMESI MALUMO MEMBERS of Parliament must exercise their constitutional rights to debate Bill 10, dragging the matter to court will not change anything because the court has no jurisdiction to stop Parliament to enact laws, says the Patriotic Front. PF Lusaka Province Secretary Kennedy Kamba said it was wise that the Parliamentarians gave a service to the people who voted for them instead of promoting selfish interests. Mr Kamba said those who intend to take the matter to court to stop the debate of Bill 10 were wasting their time because the court cannot bar Parliament to exercise its constitutional rights to enact the laws. He was reacting to the decision by the Constitutional Court to throw out a petition by the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) and Chapter One Foundation. LAZ petitioned the ConCourt to declare that the manner in which Government seeks changes in the constitution through Bill 10 was unconstitutional and illegal. Chapter One Foundation meanwhile was seeking an order that the Minister of Justice Given Lubinda should withdraw the bill from

The National Assembly of Zambia Parliament. But the ConCourt said Parliament enjoyed the exclusive cognizance over internal proceedings hence it cannot interfere with the conduct of internal affairs of Parliament when it was exercising its constitutional mandate to legislate. And Mr Kamba said this must be a lesson to those who want to interfere with Parliament and allow MPs to debate. “We should allow the Members of

Parliament who are representing the people of Zambia to debate and choose which clauses they don’t want. They need to do what the people voted them for because this is one of their duties in Parliament. They need to enact laws on behalf of the Zambian people, let Bill 10 be discussed by Members of Parliament and the clauses they feel are not good for the Zambian people they can remove them,” Mr Kamba said.

MAN CRIES AS HE IS JAILED 3 YEARS FOR K466, 000 THEFT By MULENGA MUSONDA

I

T was an emotional moment in the Choma Magiatrates Court characterised by sobbing by family and friends of a 32-year- old man who was sentenced to three years imprisonment for stealing over K450, 000. This was in a matter where Safe Chanda, a Loans Clerk employed by MicroFinance was convicted for theft by servant contrary to the Laws of Zambia. Particulars of the offence are that Chanda and Lweendo Muyola, another Loans Clerk, stole K466, 000 cash,

Boy (13) in court for defiling toddler (3) By LUCY PHIRI

A 13-YEAR-OLD boy of Kafue has been dragged to court for allegedly defiling a three-year-old baby. This is a matter before magistrate Moffat Phiri in which the juvenile was accused of having carnal knowledge of the toddler on June 24. The baby’s mother said she is a married woman with two children, and on the fateful date she left home around 09:00hours and

went to the garden with heriIn-law and left the children in the care of one of her inlaws’ child. At around 14:00 hours she returned home and immediately started cooking. Around 18:00 hours, the child wanted to urinate but she couldn't when she told her to do so. She said the baby continued to move around refusing to urinate. "I then took her to bath her but she refused touching her private parts. I then decided to check her and

found her private part was red and swollen," she said. She said she asked her who did that to her and she said the boy put a "chidoyo" on her vagina. "In the morning, I took her to the hospital and after examinations the nurse confirmed the injuries on the private part and was immediately admitted for treatment," she said. The matter was then reported to the victim support office at the police post and the boy was apprehended.

Court denies bail to 6 heist accused By MULENGA MUSONDA

T

HE Choma Magistrates Court has denied granting bail pending appeal to six men who staged a break in and got away with over K350, 000 worth of property and cash belonging to a business house. The bail pending appeal was presented to court barely two weeks after the six defendants pleaded guilty to breaking into a building and committing a crime therein. The six were sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour and have since appealed against the sentence in the High Court. The six are Yona Mabala 38, a businessman, McCloud Milimo 38, a driver, Mike Zulu, a taxi driver, Martin Chembe Tembo, 45, a carpenter, Bright Makasa, 46, a bus driver all of Lusaka and Brian Phiri 39, a bricklayer of Ndola. between 1st and 2nd June 1-2, 2020 in Choma. When the matter came up for application of bail pending appeal before Senior Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo, defense counsel Enock Hangwemu from KBF and Partners in his submission stated that it was prudent that the six be granted bail as they have appealed against the sentence to the High Court. But the court sided with the State and said the High Court does not have a backlog of cases and the appeal will be heard in the shortest possible time. She thus denied the convicts the bail pending appeal and advised the Counsel to wait upon the High Court to go through the case and make its verdict.

DRIVER The six are Yona Mabala 38, a businessman, McCloud Milimo 38, a driver, Mike Zulu, a taxi driver, Martin Chembe Tembo, 45, a carpenter, Bright Makasa, 46, a bus driver all of Lusaka and Brian Phiri 39, a bricklayer of Ndola.

Assault case ends in reconciliation born in 1998 and that he was 17 years old. His grandfather said he wasn’t sure of his age but said he might have been born in 1998. Magistrate Chanda told Kalubwe that if he was born in 1998, he was not a juvenile and will be treated like an adult. Magistrate: Why where you not coming to court? Kalubwe: I thought the matter was withdrawn after I was released on bond. Magistrate: Did you assault the complaint? Kalubwe: Yes.

Magistrate: Why did you assault him? Kalubwe: Because of group influence. Magistrate: What did you do to him? Did you beat him? Kalubwe: I wanted to beat his friend, he got in the way and I ended up hitting him. Magistrate:Do you drink alcohol or smoke? Kalubwe: No. Magistrate: Then why did you assault him? Don’t you know that assault is an offence? Kalubwe: I made a mistake. The complainant Edward Kapamba, 28, of John How-

ard said he has forgiven Kalubwe. He asked the court to withdraw the matter saying that Kalubwe is like a brother to him. He said the two weeks Kalubwe has spent in the cells, he has learnt a lesson. Magistrate Chanda said two weeks wasn’t that long because assault is five years imprisonment. Kapamba insisted that the matter be withdrawn. Kalubwe thanked Kapamba for forgiving him and withdrawing the matter.

THOSE calling for Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya to be fired are simply pushing hidden agendas driven by jealousy and hatred. Those busy advocating for the firing of our hardworking and dedicated Minister of Health are simply exposing their hidden agendas driven by malice, jealousy and hatred. The justice system demands that the accused person will be considered innocent until proven guilty by the courts of law. One would wonder why some individuals are so excited to the extent of overtaking the courts of law. It’s very unfortunate that people easily forget that in the past we had similar cases were jealous elements that wanted Mr. Chishimba Kambwili out of the PF and Government concocted lies against him accusing him to be corrupt and so on and so forth to the extent that they pushed for his dismissal from his ministerial position and eventually out of the party. But what is so funny up to date is the fact that Mr. Kambwili has not been proven guilty for the said allegations. When President Edgar Lungu was asked at the airport whether to fire Mr Ronald Kaoma Chitotela who was at that time facing corruption allegations so as to pave way for investigations, we heard the President Edgar Chagwa Lungu responding to say and I quote “ I don’t want to lose him like I lost Chishimba Kambwili hence I won’t fire him based on rumours unless proven guilty.” Clearly, President Lungu has shown great respect for the rule of law, justice system and human rights by respecting the fact that a person is considered innocent until proven guilty by the courts of law. Having said that, I wish to categorically state that we seem to have jealous elements Chitalu Chilufya whom they now see to be a threatened by the hard work of Dr. Chilufya to their hidden agendas hence their premature excitement to have him fired from his position as Minister of Health and subsequently from the PF paving way for their hidden agendas. I wish to make my humble appeal to the PF hierarchy to say that, in as much as we are fighting corruption let us not entertain the seemingly fierce fights among our leaders which clearly has proven to me that they are now using investigative wings to bring down each other because if this is left unchecked it will have devastating political consequences ahead of 2021. Let me also remind those excited misguided political elements calling for the firing of Dr. Chilufya that we do have competent people in our courts of law and investigative wings hence the need for them to relax and not trying to interfere with the justice system. MAXWELL CHONGU, PF Die hard.

CASTOR SEED ‌Our neglected Eco-friendly indigenous industrial crop

I

T is easy to reorganise our industrial manufacturing structures and incorporate a vigorous import substitution programme with potential to grow our economy in leaps and bounds using local industrial crops. They hold greater, faster overall future eco-friendly economic development potential for the country.

$1,300

The castor seed price at 60 percent to 66 percent oil content in 2019 season went up 23 percent to US$1, 300 per metric tonne and the oil price fluctuates between US$1, 600 and US$1, 800 per metric tonne depending on purity.

When we manage to increase the numbers of employed Zambians, especially the increasing numbers of youths leaving secondary schools and universities involved in value chain production to feed our industries, family incomes, education levels, consumption and acquisition of durable goods, among other things will increase and our quality of life will improve together with social indicators that result from faster greater all-inclusive economic growth. We could have picked on several minerals starting local raw material resources available, but the world is moving away from fossil and extractive mineral resources to greener eco-friendly materials in their production and the Castor plant for its oilseed indigenous to Zambia is one amongst our many other crops at our disposal that presents us with greater, greener industry potential. We are a signatory to the 2016 UN 2016 Climate Change resolution in Marrakesh Morocco COP22. This is a follow up to the Paris Agreement of October 6, 2016. Our Zambian scientist are aware of the strong push, worldwide, to reduce consumption of fossil fuel resources in the production of polymeric materials. As such, we will benefit if we start today to embrace and base our future industry raw material demands on a new generation of renewable, eco-friendly polymeric materials. Of course, classical polymer technology as we know it today will need to be altered

in many fields including the production of raw materials, polymerisation techniques, and physical modifications of biopolymers. But we leave the technicalities to another discussion. The castor crop is a natural plant to Zambia, East Africa, and India. Zambians have not taken advantage of the castor plant and its oil which has been shaped in huge amounts in other countries. Our wild varieties grow everywhere especially, in waste dumps, wetlands and riverbanks. Our seed research and propagation scientists at Mt. Makulu Research Station and the University of Zambia already possess the tech-

nological know-how and capacity to produce high-quality oil yielding castor seeds varieties from naturally growing local wild varieties to suit Zambian conditions. Castor oil is a vibrant eco-friendly starting renew-

able raw material used in the production of numerous castor oil-based derivatives which are valued chemicals in the value chain industrial applications. There is a growing global demand and consumption of castor oil and by-products by end-user industries for manufacturing of bio-based plastics, bio-resins, bio-lubricants, biodiesel, coatings, bio skin and hair care, and in pharmaceutical applications, such as laxatives and even hand sanitisers, etc. The castor oil industry has developed significantly in the last 10 years. But since COP22 there has been increasing pressure on industries to shift existing raw materials production from petrochemicals to renewables. No doubt, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Research Development and Planning Division (I hope it exists) is up to speed and can verify the potential this industrial crop holds. The IDC will also discover that we already have research and industry technological knowhow to handle the oilseed from farmers, and we have young industrial plant designers and production experts capable of producing various derivative products to feed auxiliary local and export industries and other end users. Global castor seed output 2018/19 season was 1,2 million metric tonnes and India currently accounts for 70 percent and it expects to increase production by 88

the US. Castor seed is a long duration crop taking about six months from planting to harvesting of the seed. The castor seed price at 60 percent to 66 percent oil content in 2019 season went up 23 percent to US$1, 300 per metric tonne and the oil price fluctuates between US$1, 600 and US$1, 800 per metric tonne depending on purity. But we will need to add value and produce sebacic acid and the price will go up to US$3, 700 per metric tonne. It is clear when we start to manufacture sebacic acid-based polyamides, they will be costlier but attractive to producers since they are eco-friendlier than crude fossil oil-based products. What is required is political will investment in research and development to start growing the castor crop in Zambia at a scale larger than FISP for maize to be able to match the growing castor seed oil global consumption. The UN COP 22 protocol pledged US$100 billion to eco-friendly industrial solutions. There exist additional financing mechanisms under resolution 61 to 67 of the 2016 UN COP 22 that our Finance Minister can tap into if his predecessors have not already depleted our allocation. To produce sebacic acid should be our least of problems to solve. The basic science, chemistry and available technology is simple. Remarkably similar to traditional soap making from animal fats but using crude castor oil instead. The oil is treated with caustic soda just like in ordinary soap making but at very high temperature until saponification which leads

to the formation of ricinoleic acid, this is followed by another reaction that gives the sebacic acid and a bye product alcohol. This process yields 55 percent sebacic acid which requires purification to about 85 percent and above. The by products can be used as raw materials in biofuels production and other products.

This oxidation method qualifies for climate change funding under COP 22. It will be an eco-friendly (greener) and cost-competitive process for sebacic acid production in Zambia. Costlier technologies exist that can produce high purity sebacic acid directly by an electrooxidation process developed by Asahi Chemical and Industrial Company Limited of Japan with BASF in Germany. The process produces high purity 85 percent sebacic acid directly from readily available adipic acid in a three-step process. Notwithstanding, several other potential commercialised processes exist. So, with the political will to drive our import substitution programme with local raw materials and save foreign exchange, Castor seed crop cultivation for its oil, when used for Sebacic acid production, holds greater potential when used together with numerous by-products derived from the Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia gasification process. When these products are considered together, we start to realise the greatest strategic potential Zambia holds to start manufacturing numerous other chemicals starting raw materials that can then be used in numerous other industrial processes to manufacture a wide range of everyday use consumer products. Just a thought, Sincerely,

FIFA ULTIMATUM

Hockey adopts ‘new normal …FAZ given 10 days to resolve wrangles league By MUKWIMA CHILALA

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

F

IFA has given the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) 10 days to resolve the wrangles or risk being sanctioned. FAZ president Andrew Kamanga confirmed the development noting that FIFA has tasked the association to resolve the wrangles which halted the F A Z electi on s

which were scheduled for March 28, 2020. During an interactive session with the media yesterday, Kamanga said FAZ has informed the Ministry of Sports, the National Sports Council about the ultimatum. Damiano FC manager Damiano Mutale and Patson Lusaka sued FAZ in an attempt to stop the FAZ elections, a case which was referred to the Constitutional Court. And expelled FAZ vice president Richard Kazala, sued Kamanga and his gen-

eral secretary Adrian Kashala for contempt of court. However Kamanga said FIFA does not allow local courts to preside over football cases. Meanwhile Kamanga said FAZ is hopeful Zambia will qualify to five Africa Cup of Nations in the next 10 years. Kamanga said the association has assembled various national teams which will take Zambian football forward at both senior and junior levels. FAZ president Andrew Kamanga

Man Utd hit 5 as Vardy scores 100th EPL goal TEENAGER Mason Greenwood scored two superb goals as Manchester United hammered Bournemouth yesterrday to climb to fourth in the Premier League. Junior Stanislas nutmegged Harry Maguire to give the Cherries the lead. Greenwood, 18, equalised for the hosts with a blistering finish and Marcus Rashford's penalty put United ahead. Anthony Martial extended the advantage before Joshua King's penalty made it 3-2 - but Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes scored further goals for United. United turned on the style at Old Trafford as they scored more than four goals in a Premier League home match since a 5-0 victory against Wigan Athletic on December 26, 2011.

Having collected 21 points from the past 27 on offer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's in-form side are unbeaten in nine topflight games. In contrast, Bournemouth remain 19th and in serious relegation trouble after a fifth straight league defeat. And Norwich boss Daniel Farke says it is "unrealistic" to talk about avoiding relegation from the Premier League after yesterday's home defeat by

Vardy

Brighton. The Canaries players appeared devastated at full time as the significance of the result struck home - with Todd Cantwell remaining on the pitch for 10 minutes after the final whistle While Leandro Trossard's winner means the Seagulls are now well-placed to see in a fourth straight season in the top flight, Norwich are seven points from safety with five games remaining. Meanwhile, Jamie Vardy has become the latest member of the Premier League 100-goal club and the first Leicester player to achieve that feat after he helped his team shock Crystal Palace 3-0. Only three other players in the Foxes’ history have recorded a century of top-flight goals for the club. – BBC.

FOLLOWING Government’s guidance on how semi and contact sports ought to resume its activities, the Zambia Hockey Association (ZHA) says it will mid this month start with a small-sided league and later revert to the normal one. ZHA general secretary Thomas Mumba said they had resolved to start with a small-sided league called Hockey Five so as to keep the numbers low. Mumba said that the Hockey Five was scheduled to start in the third week of July but would later resume the normal league once the situation normalised. He said that starting with the Hockey Five was one way of helping the players regain their fitness levels due to the high intensity of the game and that it would help them keep in shape and prepare for the upcoming events. Mumba said that the normal league would still go ahead for the 2020 season but would however be a congested one due to the time left before the end of the year. “For the Hockey League what we have resolved is that we are going to start with the small league which is called the Hockey Five because we want to control the numbers. After that we are going back to the normal league that we always play,” Mumba said. The 2020 Hockey League season was scheduled to have opened in March prior to the suspension of all sports activities which was a result of the Covid-19 global outbreak. All other events on the Zambia Hockey calendar remains suspended due to the halting global hockey events.

Four suspects arrested after off-duty cop stoned to death in Khayelitsha

DAUGHTER BIDS FAREWELL TO PARENTS WHO DIED OF COVID-19 ON THE SAME DAY

JOINT funeral was held on Saturday in a church where congregants sat apart, practicing social distancing, their tears absorbed by the cloth masks covering their noses and mouths. “I love you, Mommy. I love you, Daddy… I love you endlessly and you will always be in my thoughts, in my heart and in my prayers.” This was the moving farewell given to Barry and Heidi Volkwijn by their 19-year-old daughter, Amy. The Cape Town couple died of Covid-19 on the same day. Barry, 48, a driver at Alexandra Psychiatric Hospital, died in the early hours of the morning on Sat-

urday 20 June. Heidi, 43, a respected motivational speaker and manager of services for youth and adults at the League of Friends of the Blind (Lofob), died in the afternoon. A joint funeral was held on Saturday in a church where congregants sat apart, practicing social distancing, their tears absorbed by the cloth masks covering their noses and mouths. “I’m so heartbroken that I have to say farewell to you, but so happy you will rest in eternity together,” Amy’s tribute, read on her behalf by her former teacher Anushka Daniels while she stood alongside her, continued. She previously told News24 she

Kimberly Guilfoyle, Donald Trump Jr's girlfriend, tests positive for Covid-19 THE girlfriend of President Donald Trump's eldest son has tested positive for coronavirus, US media reported Friday. Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former Fox News television personality who is dating Donald Trump Jr, had traveled to South Dakota to see the US president's Fourth of July speech and celebration fireworks at Mount Rushmore. Guilfoyle, 51, was immediately isolated after discovering she had the virus in a routine test conducted on anyone expected to come in close contact with the president, the New York Times reported. In a statement to the newspaper, Sergio Gor, chief of staff to the Trump campaign's finance committee, said: "She's doing well, and will be retested to ensure the diagnosis is correct since she's asymptomatic." He added: "As a precaution (she) will cancel all upcoming events. Donald Trump Jr was tested negative, but as a precaution is also self-isolating

and is canceling all public events." Guilfoyle is the third person close to the US president to return a positive Covid-19 test, US media reported. Others include Trump’s personal valet and the US vice president’s press secretary. The pandemic has claimed nearly 130,000 American lives and a recent resurgence “puts the entire country at risk,” top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci has said. - THE GUARDIAN

couldn’t imagine her parents separated and were grateful that “even though they are gone, they are still together”. Barry was remembered as a “gentle giant”, with a warm and kind smile. Tributes to him described him as a man of action who always sought to serve others. They described Heidi and Amy as “the loves of his life”. Both had a deep faith and were active church members. Heidi was described as bubbly and energetic; as someone who loved to talk and who always had a warm smile. She lost her sight in her teenage

years. The family described Barry as her eyes, and as an “earth angel” sent just for her. Barry studied to be a radio technician and took his first job at Lofob, where he met Heidi. Five years ago, Barry took a position at Alexandra Hospital and enrolled to finish high school. The family had started displaying flu-like symptoms last month. Barry had been hospitalised by 10 June as he had been struggling to breathe. Heidi and Amy were tested that same week. By that Friday, Heidi – a diabetic – had been admitted to the Constantiaberg Mediclinic, also battling to breathe. - THE CITIZEN

POLICE have nabbed four suspects aged between 17 and 39 on Friday, following the murder of a police officer in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase said in a statement that Constable Mzuvukile Emanuel Hlahleni from Steenberg police station was killed at his home in Khayelitsha after an argument with his partner. “It is alleged Hlahleni was allegedly stoned to death by family members of his girlfriend and some members of the community close to the family.” Nkwalase said Hawks national priority violence crimes (NPVC) teams traced and arrested the suspects which included two 17-yearold minors. All suspects are expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court next Monday on a charge of murder. - TIMESLIVE

Police arrest 35 teenagers at sex, drugs party in Homa Bay Town POLICE on Friday arrested 35 teenagers after finding them at a sex and drugs party in a house at Sange estate, Homa Bay Town. The 20 girls and 15 boys were apprehended in an operation led by Arujo Location Chief Robert Lango, Homa Bay Township Assistant Chief Duncan Odhiambo and his Arujo Sub-location counterpart Jackton Olielo.

MANCHESTER City manager Pep Guardiola provided a hypothesis on why Liverpool looked so listless in Thursday’s 4-0 thrashing at Etihad Stadium. Liverpool being thrashed ‘doesn’t really matter’Craig Burley thinks despite Liverpool being thumped 4-0 at Man City, the result “doesn’t really matter.” “I think they drank a lot of beers in the last week,” Guardiola said, “but they arrived here with no beers in their blood, which is why I give us a lot of credit.”

Mr Lango said the teenagers aged between 13 and 17 were found drinking alcohol and smoking bhang. He said several brands of alcohol were found on the floor and on a table in the house. “We found used condoms which we believe the children used to engage in sex. Six managed to escape when we arrived,” he added. “Some of the minors were

dressing up when we got to the house. They had turned the house into a brothel.” Mr Lango said a parent rented the house for her two daughters. Neighbours raised the alarm after hearing loud music. “I mobilised my team and went to the house. We locked the door and called police of-

ficers who came in a vehicle and arrested the children,” he said, adding the owner of the house was also arrested. They were all taken to Homa Bay Police Station but were later released because of lack of space. Mr Lango urged parents to closely monitor their children’s movements especially during the holidays. - THE STAR

Guardiola on Liverpool’s poor play: ‘They drank a lot of beers last week’ A merciless attacking display sparked by City scorers Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden consigned Liverpool to an embarrassing loss exactly a week after their 30-year title drought ended. The only time Liverpool’s players looked like Premier League champions was when they were given a guard of honour from last year’s winners, City. - NAHANDA RADIO

British film and TV star actor Earl Cameron dies aged 102

EARL Cameron, one of the first black actors to forge a successful career in British film and television, has died aged 102, a family friend has said. Bermuda-born Cameron, who lived with his wife in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, died after going to sleep on Friday, Martin Beckett said. Cameron first appeared on screen in the 1951 film, Pool of London, in a rare starring

role for a black actor. His other credits were the films, The Queen and Thunderball and Doctor Who. Cameron was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2009 New Year Honours. Mr Beckett said: “He had sheltered himself because of Covid and had not really been keen on going out, he had chest problems. “He’s a great character, very spiritual, very modest, we’re going to miss him. “He would never take on roles that demeaned people of colour... he was often subject of a lot of racial prejudice, but he never really got angry about it. He pitied people that couldn’t accept him.” Bermuda Premier David Burt tweeted “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of iconic Bermudian actor Earl Cameron.” Paterson Joseph, who recently starred as Kamal Hadley in the BBC’s Noughts and Crosses series, said he was a “giant man”, whose “pioneering shoulders are what my generation of actors stand on”. - BBC

SA horror movie on family tormented by demons a Netflix hit CAPE TOWN – A new South African horror production which examines a family tormented by demons has made its global debut. Directed by Harold Hölscher, the film 8 was released on June 19 and is now available to stream on Netflix. This is Hölscher’s feature-length debut and stars local actors Garth Breytenbach, Tshamano Sebe, Inge Beckmann and Keita Luna. “I was a ball of nerves, you just don’t know what to expect dropping your first film and dropping it on Netflix,” said Hölscher. “We were blown away by the responses by people and viewers. “We trended number 1 on Twitter and we were number one in Netflix’s lo-

cal weekend Top 10. The nerves have subsided and I’m very happy for us all.” The film initially premiered at the third annual Joburg Film Festival in 2019. It tells the story of a family in 1970s South Africa: William, his wife, Sarah, and his niece, Mary. “After moving into the old family home in the farmlands, the family come across a wandering man named Lazarus and who later works for them. “While Mary easily befriends Lazarus, who suffers guilt from losing his daughter in a fire, the family grow suspicious of him following a series of attacks in the area - and of whatever seems to be hiding in his rucksack. - IOL

Uncle Jah adds voice on K30m for artistes By TROY MUKUPA THE K30 million e m p owe rment fund extended towards the Ministry of Tourism and Arts is a welcome move and has come at the right time when we needed it most, said Brinken Mwema. Speaking in an interview with the Sunday Nation, Mwema best known to the entertenment world as uncle Jah said he hopes to see youthful artistes in the industry benefit from the empowerment by having access to the package. "I personally hope to see that youthful artistes benefit from this package so that our long-time dependency on music alone can come to an end. We have in the past years entirely relied on music as our only source of

income. This package can change everything for the better of the industry and the nation" He commended President Lungu and Government for the package. "It's good to note that for the first time government has looked into our plight under the able leadership of his Excellency Edgar Lungu. Thank you Mr President and we hope that this can be done in phases every after a certain period of time. We in the industry appreciate the concern from the president and if this package will be used the right way, it will benefit the right people. We haven't seen such in the past and this is why some of our colleagues resort to becoming political party musicians and involve themselves in politics coz they find refugee from politicians which is not supposed to be the case," he said He said such pleas for empowerment in the past were made by artistes but fell on deaf ears. He said the empowerment will help artistes and youths to venture into profitable businesses that can benefit both government and artistes. He urged the National Arts council (NAC) to be impartial in giving out the loans.

III

"Let this mark the beginning and not the end. Put politics aside and let us musicians make sure we come up with innovative programs that can help us pay back loans in due time so that we don't disappoint the President. Good results should come out of this empowerment so as to give confidence to the sponsors. This is a dream come true. Music is a short term career so once you misuse such a good opportunity the industry will starve," Said. And renowned Zambian musician Choklet said he hopes to see the art industry on another level after the flagging off of the empowerment scheme. "Musicians are role models and they inspire a lot of lives. Let's not rush in to getting luxury vehicles for ourselves and forget about the problems that we have undergone for the past 15 to 20 years. Let's eat chibwabwa today so that we can eat meat forever," he urged.

COVID-19 INSPIRES MUSIC PROMOTER TO SET UP KOPA GRILL By TERENCE MISELO THE Covid-19 pandemic has shown us that we as Zambians need to step up, join the entrepreneurial world with more versatility and visibility so that we can carry our country ourselves than depend on the outside world, says youth entrepreneur Joel Siwale. Siwale known in the entertainment world as Cee Jay who is a music and media manager under Iconic label said this ahead of the official opening of his new business venture Kopa Grill which opened in Ndola on Friday. This business is envisioned to be one of the biggest indigenous owned Fast Food Take Away. Siwale said that Zambians needed to take an active role in the country’s economic recovery especially during this Covid-19 pandemic. He observed that since the Covid-19 Pandemic partial shut down, many countries had shown their dependency on foreign based entrepre-

neurs and left a gap in the market that Zambians can take advantage of and fill up. “The Kopa Grill which is a youth entrepreneurship venture will create employment opportunities for youth as well as the other young people. This will help to bring ostracized youth back into the economic mainstream and address some of the socio-psychological problems and delinquency that arise from joblessness,” Siwale said. “Youth Entrepreneurship also helps youths to develop new skills and experiences and promote innovation and resilience in youth. As young entrepreneurs, I believe we are particularly responsive to new economic opportunities and trends, and will be able to better adapt to the changing market.” Siwale who is also proprietor of MEIT Technologies –ICT and Information Technology Security Consultants and working with his wife Memory Sitali says the setting up of Kopa Grill is a youth innovation that will create jobs that are so desired in this difficult economic time. He explains that the vision of Kopa Grill is to extend to different parts of the country. “There is no dream that is too big not to go head on with it, that is one of my mottos and even as I embarked on this venture, I see a Kopa Grill in every city and town,” said Siwale.

HE youth of Zambia represent a significant and growing human resource, with the potential to contribute to sustainable economic development, Andrew Lubusha has said.

Speaking in an interview with the Sunday Nation, Mr Lubusha who is PF Eastern Provincial chairperson commended President Lungu for the creation of a K30 million youth empowerment scheme which he said will help revamp the social sector. "We wish to commend His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu for pumping in K30 million towards the empowerment of Youths across the country. We celebrate his exemplary leadership as the most youth-friendly President who has contributed immensely to youth empowerment and development especially for his continuous support to the status quo" He said as the party in the province they will make necessary implementation and mechanisms for the package so that it can be accessible to

all youths regardless of which party they affiliate with. "We will make sure that the youths in the Province benefit including those that feel they do not have the said connections. We will foster a political will and enabling environment necessary to create sustainable change in the province for all regardless of Social or Political standing in society" He said they will engage all stakeholders in the Province to help make a friendly environment for the youths. "Approximately Fifty to sixty percent of Zambia’s population is aged 10 to 35 years, this explains the magnitude of labour force that is in our youths. We'll engage all stakeholders in the province to make sure a friendly environment is created to enable our Youths access opportunities in the Industrial yard currently under construction in the province. I also wish to urge the Youths not to leave the faith of our country in the hands of our leaders alone, as it is a collective responsibility of everyone to make Eastern province and Zambia greater. Munali youths making difference in agriculture By TERENCE MISELO

YOUTHS in Munali Constituency’s Kalingalinga area have vowed to stay active and contribute to economic development of the nation by engaging in agriculture.

Inspired by their area Member of Parliament for Munali Prof. Nkandu Luo, through her empowerment programme, Kalingalinga youths are making a huge difference in vegetable growing and chicken raring which they want to turn into big business. Moffat Nkoma the Kalingalinga Youth Coordinator and initiator of Kalingalinga Youth Trust that works closely with Prof. Nkandu Luo said the youths are very happy to see their progress in gardening and are willing to turn their projects into big

business. Kalingalinga has two groups under the Kalingalinga Youth Trust that are raring chickens and growing vegetables for their income. “We are trying to remove overdependence on the government and our parents. We are engaged in Agrobusiness and we want to make it big. We are teaching the youth that they can also make money without depending on their parents,” says Nkoma, who explained that the garden project came up after the youths were empowered with chickens by Hon. Nkandu Luo. “We set up the garden so that we could raise moneys to buy things like feed and medecines for the chicken. What we were avoiding was to always go back to the Hon. For support. We had to find our own means to set up an income-generating venture.” Mr Nkoma who is fully-in-

volved in training and guiding these youths on their projects said he is thankful to Bishop Mutonga for providing the youth with the land for their gardening. He advised youths to get involved in agriculture and stop blaming government for jobs. “Youths feel they can only be rich if they have the white-collar jobs. This agriculture can give them opportunities to make a lot of money,” he said. “ We have been talking with the minister and we want to go 100 per cent in agriculture. We want to register all the groups as limited companies so that it is easy to monitor the progression of these projects. We communicate with the MP; she is very involved and very supportive. We give her progress reports to get guidance from her,” he said. “What we are selling is kept by the treasure. Our aim

is to raise money and acquire our own land and create our own jobs.” Two youths involved in the project John Chela and Yvonne Nkoma the vicesecretary for the group both urged young people to get involved in income-generating activities and stop complaining.

high in admiration of our great country through human economic development and continued human to human support. It's time to be innovative, use our skills as well as put to maximum use of our talents," he said.

F you have been reading this series of articles for the last few months you may have paused and asked yourself “why is bushmeat so important all of a sudden?”. Perhaps living in a developing country such as Zambia you may question the wisdom of investing resources in wildlife conservation when so many other pressing issues persist.

To better understand the significance of Zambia’s illegal bushmeat trade and the effects it has on our country, let’s take a look at the Kafue Lechwe. This a small but iconic species of semiaquatic antelope, endemic to the Kafue Flats of Zambia. That means this species can only be found in our country and nowhere else in the world. A study released in 2019 by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) showed evidence of continued decline of the population of the species. The Kafue Lechwe population currently stands at an estimated 23,000, the lowest ever recorded for the Kafue Flats. A previous study conducted in 2015 estimated a population of 29,000 thus suggesting a 19 percent decline in 5 years. Looking back in time to the 1930s hundreds of thousands of Lechwe roamed the flats and even in the more recent 1970s populations exceeded 100,000. So, what happened? As our country’s population has grown so has its taste for bushmeat. The drastic population decline of the Kafue Lechwe and other species can now be attributed to an increase in the trade of “Nyama Ya Mu Sanga”. This misunderstood popular meal is pushing species into extinction. Illegal bushmeat is unregulated and as a result the meat is unhygienically prepared and dangerous to eat. The recent COVID-19 global pandemic has been linked to the illegal wildlife trade, which has been reported as the cause of many zoonotic diseases in humans. While bushmeat poses a huge threat to public health in Zambia it poses an even bigger threat to wildlife populations as shown in the case of the Kafue Lechwe. Zambia’s illegal bushmeat trade is a large but destructive and unsustainable in-

dustry that not only affects prey populations (food for larger carnivores) but all wildlife. A primary mode of capture of wildlife for meat, is the use of wire snares. These snares are silent and indiscriminate killers which result in significant bycatch. While intended to capture prey for human consumption, the placement of snares in protected areas often results in the capture of many other vulnerable species such as elephants and lions and wild dogs. It is now well understood that this indiscriminate poaching will lead to the collapse of prey populations which in turn results in the collapse of other flagship

populations and ultimately ecosystem degradation which affects us all. As we all know, our ecosystems are finely balanced and the collapse of one vital part of the system results in the collapse of another. As the Ubuntu adage states “I am, because we are”. Ecosystems function in the same way. Scientists have reported across the world that we will face increasingly more human disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic and environment challenges such as droughts from climate change if we continue to damage ecosystems. To put things in greater perspective. The Kafue Flats is a 6,500 square kilometre floodplain historically known to

be one of the richest wildlife habitats in Africa. The area is important for fishing, cattle grazing, sugarcane farming, and production of hydroelectric power. It not only sustains local people through hunting, fishing, and cropping but it also a direct source of water and resources for the millions of people living in nearby areas such as Lusaka. In Zambia, we cannot afford to lose the Kafue Lechwe, the Kafue Flats or the precious ecosystem balance that keeps us all alive. So, the next time you are offered “nyama yamu sanga” at a special occasion or a friend’s house, remember illegal bushmeat dangerous for you, for me and for Zambia.

Munali youths making difference in agriculture By TERENCE MISELO

YOUTHS in Munali Constituency’s Kalingalinga area have vowed to stay active and contribute to economic development of the nation by engaging in agriculture.

Inspired by their area Member of Parliament for Munali Hon. Moffat Nkoma the Kalingalinga Youth Coordinator and initiator of Kalingalinga Youth Trust that works closely with Prof. Nkandu Luo said the youths are very happy to see their progress in gardening and are willing to turn their projects into big business. Kalingalinga has two groups

empowered with chickens by Hon. Nkandu Luo. “We set up the garden so that we could raise moneys to buy things like feed and medicines for the chicken. What we were avoiding was to always go back to the Hon. For support. We had to find our own means to set up an income-generating venture.” Mr Nkoma who is fully-involved in training and guiding these youths on their projects said he is thankful to Bishop Mutonga for providing the youth with the land for their gardening. He advised youths to get involved in agriculture and stop blaming government for jobs.

“We are trying to remove overdependence on the government and our parents. We are engaged in Agro-business and we want to make it big. We are teaching the youth that they can also make money without depending on their parents,” says Nkoma, who explained that the garden project came up after the youths were empowered with chickens by Hon. Nkandu Luo. under the Kalingalinga Youth Trust that are rearing chickens and growing vegetables for their income. “We are trying to remove overdependence on the government and our parents. “Youths feel they can only be rich if they have the white-collar jobs. This agriculture can give them opportunities to make a lot of money,” he said. “ We have been talking with the Hon. Nkandu Luo and we want to go 100 per cent in agriculture. We want to register all the groups as limited companies so that it is easy to monitor the progression of these projects. We communicate with the MP; she is very involved and very supportive. We give her progress reports to get guidance from her,” he said. “What we are selling is kept by the treasure. Our aim is to raise money and acquire our own land and create our own jobs.” Two youths involved in the project John Chela and Yvonne Nkoma the vice-secretary for the group, both urged young people to get involved in income-generating activities and stop complaining.
