NATION
AMARGEDDON IS HERE
WE do not have to wait and be told officially by the United Party for National Development (UPND) that Armageddon is upon us. Its actions send a clear message that indeed, the Armageddon that UPND president Hakainde Hichilema once threatened has dawned. The brazen acts of lawlessness being carried out by UPND cadres all speak for themselves that the party has declared war against law and order. After all, is that not what Armageddon is all about, create political upheaval and make the country ungovernable? The UPND claims it is a law-abiding political organisation, but its actions show nothing to prove that. For how else could one describe last Thursday’s act of lawlessness when its militia group abducted two police officers in uniform in Lavushimanda’s Mununga area and dumped them some 20 kilometres away on the Great North Road? Even in everyday life, no one dares attack a police officer in uniform because that uniform represents the state. According to Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo, the over 30 UPND militia group comprising former senior police officers attacked, abducted and disarmed the two police officers of an AK47 rifle with six rounds of ammunition and four teargas canisters. This is a clear case of an attack on the state and we demand that the culprits must be fished out and face the wrath of the law. Never in the country’s history has a political party ever attacked and abducted police officers. He said the two officers who were badly beaten with a hammer, an axe, matchet and fists were bundled into a white Toyota Hilux double cab whose occupants included UPND Member of Parliament for Sesheke, Rome Kang’ombe. Mr Kampyongo said the firearm was handed back to the officers after they were dropped between Lukulu and Finkuli area over 20 kilometres from where they had been abducted from. “The over 30 UPND militia group went away with the six rounds of ammunition and four teargas canisters,” he said. Mr Kampyongo is right to direct the police to speed up investigations into the matter where the UPND militia group in the company of their party leader Hakainde Hichilema also assaulted innocent citizens in Muchinga Province. We know that the UPND president has never hidden his disdain for the PF government of President Edgar Lungu and his prepared to put his plans of making the country ungovernable in practice. But he ought to be warned that Zambians would not stand with arms akimbo and let him crate anarchy in an otherwise peaceful country. In Parliament on Friday, Vice President said “We hope the abduction of police officers in Mpika is not the beginning of Armageddon which has been talked about.” Speaking during the Vice-President’s question time in parliament, Ms Wina said “The abduction of the police officers is very regrettable. Mr Speaker, it is very regrettable that things like this can happen in our country and maybe this is the beginning of the stage of turbulence that we have heard about.” We have always said politics should be about winning the confidence of the public through debate and not by beating your rivals. We trust therefore that even as the country observes the national day of prayer today, Zambians will pray for all politicians and their supporters to realise that they are one people with a common destiny.

SERVING WITH INTEGRITY
ARE UPND’S FACEBOOK-BASED MILLENNIALS MEANT TO BOLSTER HH’S POLITICAL FORTUNES? By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE FOR policymaking UPND politicians, it’s easy to discount the millennial generation as lazy, footloose and obsessed with social media. In Zambia, the whole generation is derided as Yo-Bali, those who prefer to lounge at home with their aged parents, rather than embrace a more financially independent lifestyle. But such easy stereotypes belie a much harsher economic reality. And nowhere is this despondent realism more evident than in upper-class city suburbs seemingly on the verge of perpetual economic and societal change. Zambian millennials – those born after 1999 – many have confronted the 2008 global financial crisis as kindergartengoing kids and the ongoing Covid-19 crisis as grownups. But even these crises are mere bookmarks in the longer story of Zambian economic fragmentation which began with the World Bank-induced Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) and the subsequent privatisation of national assets of the early 1990s. This is a stagnation which has already resulted in a whole generation of young Zambians being without steady employment, bereft of economic independence and increasingly without hope for the future. Although Zambian millennials are more educated and skilled than their parents, two out of three workers with a short-term contract are under thirty. As a result, young Zambian adults are seemingly poorer than the previous generation. Closing this dichotomy – between the struggling younger generations and their often seemingly affluent parents and grandparents – is the biggest obstacle to fundamentally rebooting Zambia’s economy. Perhaps even more importantly, giving young Zambians a fair opportunity at economic independence requires challenging the stranglehold on political policymaking held by older Zambians. But to give millennials a fighting chance at success means confronting two bedrocks of Zambian society: an antiquated education system and a reorientation of political power away from well-heeled middle-aged and retired Zambians. The Zambian education system is exacerbating millennial struggles. Highly theoretical and based on the acquisition of general background knowledge but few life-sustaining
practical skills, the Zambian teaching system at the post-primary level is not attuned to the realities of the 21stcentury labour market. The results are either abstract or controversially obscure. This millennial disenfranchisement has caused frustration, distrust of government and a tendency to vote for pseudo-populist parties. Zambia is a society where young people are showing signs of being interested in politics once more – their patience is running out with high levels of unemployment. This does not necessarily mean that they will be rushing to join political parties however – despite the choices on offer. Known and unknown to many, the United Nations World Youth Report, released in 2007, suggested that young people around the globe were participating politically, but not in a conventional way. For example, it said the youth would rather volunteer at local clinics and schools to uplift their communities than directly campaign for a political party. This has not stopped parties looking for new avenues of expression. For instance, there is evidence that Zambian politicians seem to have learnt from the American experience. Take the social networking site, Facebook, for example. President Barack Obama used it effectively to lure the youth into voting for him. This is precisely what we are seeing mimicked by the UPND mobilisation team on Facebook, buoyed by funds from UK-based SABI Strategy Group and South African-based Brenthurst Foundation to brand the 2021 UPND presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema as “Bally-1.” Prominent among his backers has been Henry Sands the managing director at SABI, a firm that provides comprehensive communication strategies and solutions to international businesses, high-net-worth individuals and political organisations. Sands attended Birmingham University, where the UPND leader also attended to study for his finance and business strategy masters programme. Many politicians including Zambia’s President Edgar Lungu are now on Facebook. They interact with their supporters through this medium. UPND for one boasts that this has helped inject life into politics by appealing to young people. Some analysts agree. But for young people domiciled in city slums and rural settings, without access to luxuries such
as smartphones and the internet, breadand-butter issues remain the focus. Despite dabbling in technology and trying to appear hip, political parties must still attend to young people’s urgent needs. Top of the to-do list are ideas and initiatives of creating jobs, reducing levels of political violence and combating an HIV/Aids epidemic that is reportedly claiming hundreds of lives every day in Zambia – many of them young. The first thing is to realise that neither a naive UPND leadership nor its muchheralded “Bally will fix it!” campaign message will save Zambia. Such initiatives will only facilitate the existing opposition party’s policymakers clinging to top positions while the money flows from the foreign-based paymasters. Millions of dollars of investment in the regime-change agenda and online propaganda activities against the PF will change nothing, if more deepseated structural intraparty reforms are ignored. Secondly, Facebook-based millennials should refuse to accept the current status quo as the only available path for the UPND. This will mean confronting the older generations about the illogicality of such generational inequality. It means the young need to inject a sense of urgency and positive disruption into their approach to mainstream intraparty politics. It’s time for a productive movement of change that is not just the same old negative messaging stuck on repeat. For all the noise they generate, groupings like GEARS/CiSCA/OCiDA are devoid of tangible intraparty reform proposals. So what can UPND’s Facebook-based millennials do? How can they bolster HH’s political fortunes, yet existing UPND politicians are incapable of internally reforming the party because that would mean compromising their own tightly held privileges? Without age-conscious politics, UPND intraparty democracy will remain a façade behind which the rich, the corrupt and the deceitful keep exploiting the youth. Millennial netizens need to re-imagine equality at this time of reckoning before the 2021 polls. Critically, they need to re-imagine Facebook-based movements moved into action by the belief that one life is no less important than another, and no one life should be lived at the expense of another.

‘UPND MILITIA ABDUCTED POLICE OFFICERS’ From page 1
Mr Kampyongo said the over 30 UPND militia group comprising former police officers hired as body guards for the opposition leader attacked, abducted and disarmed two police officers of an AK47 rifle with six rounds of ammunition and four teargas canisters. Mr Kampyongo has therefore directed the police to speed up investigations into the matter where the UPND militia group in the company of their party leader Hakainde Hichilema recently also assaulted innocent citizens in Muchinga Province. He said the two officers who were badly beaten using a hammer, an axe, matchet and fists were bundled into a white Toyota Hilux double cab whose occupants included UPND Member of Parliament for Sesheke constituency. Mr Kampyongo said the firearm was handed back to the officers after they were dropped between Lukulu and Finkuli area over 20 kilometres from where they had been abducted from. “The over 30 UPND militia group went away with the six rounds of ammunition and four teargas canisters,” he said. In addition to the other seven casualties recorded, he said, the UPND militia group also stole various items belonging to innocent citizens valued at approximately K10, 000. Meanwhile, Mr Kampyongo has disclosed that a known opposition political party in Zambia has solicited funds from the international community to cause anarchy in the country. He said Government had information of a political party leader who was in East Africa to source for funds to carry out
criminal activities in the country, but warned that his days were numbered as the State security was on top of things. Mr Kampyongo said Government was monitoring him and would not tolerate any form of violence from his party or indeed any political party. “One political leader was in East Africa to solicit for funds for his party’s illegal activities to destabilise the country but we will not allow it. We shall not allow individuals to destabilise the country because of a few coins,” he said. The minister said one of the illegal activities lined up by a political grouping was to blow up recent procured Government’s anti-riot motor vehicles using explosives. “The source for the explosive is already established and the culprits are also known,” he said. The Minister however said the suspects scheming to damage the newly procured equipment were being monitored and very soon they will be brought to book. He however assured Zambians that Government would continue investing in the security of the country to ensure the citizens were protected and safe all the time. He reiterated that elections were not a new phenomenon to Zambians who have always endeavoured to remain peaceful. Mr Kampyongo reminded the opposition political leaders to revive their role of offering checks and balances to the ruling party and not to install fear in citizens. The Minister has also appealed to the people of Muchinga to remain calm and not seek vengeance as the Government was doing everything possible to bring to book the culprits.
State hands over gold panning certificates in Rufunsa By OLIVER SAMBOKO GOVERNMENT has handed over gold panning certificates to four gold mining cooperatives in Rufunsa aimed at formalising artisanal mining activities and to help improve productivity in the sector. The cooperatives that that have benefitted are Chomwetu, Chipeketi, Kamandu and Pokela. Officiating at the handover ceremony and launch of the Zambia Export Diversification Strategy in Gold and gemstone, Mines and Minerals Development Minister Richard Musukwa implored ZCCM-IH to invest in machinery to grow the gold and gemstone mining sectors. He said with proper machinery in place, the gold sector has the potential to create employment and help spar growth in the country’s economy. Mr Musukwa said the PF government has embarked on formalisation of mining activities on gold and gemstone to empower local people through cooperatives and ensure that the country benefit from the natural resources. The minister assured other cooperatives across the country that his ministry will prioritise the issuance licences to encourage formalisation of gold mining activities. Mr Musukwa also said Government was determined to ensure the exploitation of gold was done in a professional and transparent manner. And Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Assistant Secretary General for Programmes Kipyego Cheluget said the block will continue to support the diversification of the mining sector to grow the economy. Dr Cheluget commended the government for putting in place export diversification strategy for gold and gemstone sector which he said was key to growth of the sector.

HYPOCRITES GANG UP
By SIMON MUNTEMBA
THE known hypocrites who are supposed to join Chishimba Kambwili in jail have ganged up to cast aspersions on the integrity of the Zambian judiciary by claiming that the trial of NDC leader was not fair, Chilufya Tayali has said. Meanwhile, Lusaka lawyer Tutwa Ngulube has said NDC vice president Joseph Akafumba should stop hallucinating that convicted Chishimba Kambwili was still eligible on the 2021 race because it was “game-over” for him. Mr Tayali, the Equity and Economic Party (EEP) president said all those who were saying Kambwili’s trial and conviction was political persecution said so because they were themselves corrupt. He was reacting to remarks on one of the local newspapers attributed to Socialist Party (SP) leader, Dr Fred M’membe and UPND president Hakainde Hichilema that Kambwili’s trial was not fair and a political persecution. Mr Tayali said Dr M’membe and Mr Hichilema have ganged up to discredit Kambwili’s conviction for their own interests. “People like Fred M’membe and HH, these are the people that should actually join Kambwili in prison. So for me, I have no regards for these people who are saying it is political persecution,” Mr Tayali said. He said Dr M’membe and Mr Hichilema could not condemn the crimes that Kambwili
Mr Tayali committed because by doing so, they would be condemning themselves. “Of course the corrupt have ganged up against the judicial system. They are discrediting the judicial system because they are scared it might soon find them wanting, so they are discrediting Kambwili’s trial just to cast aspersions on the integrity of the Zambian judiciary,” he said. About HH, he said, the privatisation
issues is in public domain, the land issues, the lower Zambezi issue, all these issues are haunting him. He got rich out of taking advantage of the resources of this country. So how can they condemn Kambwili? They can never because they know that soon the law will catch up with them. Meanwhile, Mr Ngulube who is Government Deputy Parliamentary Chief Whip, said it was wishful thinking for Mr Akafumba to insinuate that Kambwili would contesting as President or any other political office while he is convicted. Speaking at a joint media briefing with the UPND which was held at Kambwili’s home in Woodlands on Thursday last week, Mr Akafumba said the convicted NDC leader would still be on the ballot paper in 2021 during the general elections. Mr Akafumba argued that despite being incarcerated, Kambwili was not barred from contesting elections next year. But Mr Ngulube who quoted article 100 (2) h of the constitution of Zambia, said Kambwili’s conviction in the Lusaka magistrate’s court disqualified him from contesting as President or any other political office. He said Kambwili could only contest if the conviction slapped on him by Lusaka Magistrate David Simusamba was overturned by a higher court on appeal. He said on this basis of being a convict, Kambwili could not even be allowed by the Electoral Commission of Zambia to file in nominations.

Patients’ eviction riles hospital
By GRACE CHAILE- LESOETSA
THERE is nothing that hurts so much as to throw a critically ill patient outside the hospital and the nation needs to rise to this inhumane treatment, says TMS Hospital Limited board chairperson Elias Mpondela. And Mr Mpondela said TMS Hospital is not the borrower of the K18 million debt owed to First Capital Bank but the owners of the building MKP who put it as the third party mortgage. He said MKP borrowed the K18 million to finance the Heroes estate project which was a joint venture with the National Housing Authority. On October 12, bailiffs pounced on TMS Hospital over the alleged debt owed to First Capital Bank. In an interview, Mr Mpondela said it was unfair that TMS Hospital found itself as a third party, evicted when it had nothing to do with the case. He said TMS Hospital has been a customer of the bank for over 14 years since it began its operations in Zambia and wondered why they had to be treated in such a cruel manner. “They have been paying K175, 000 per month to the bank as their tenant. And we have been banking with them for over 14 years and we give them good turn over as TMS Hospital. We were
given two days to vacate the building without a consideration that we are a health institution and the health of the patients is a priority,” he said. Mr Mpondela said being a public health facility, First Captial Bank could have given them at least a three months’ notice. “How do we remove technical equipment, staff, business and the patients? How do you remove patients who are sleeping on a bed getting treatment? This is unfair,” he said. “They could have at least given us three months, we are not objecting to the fact that we had to move. We went to the court to ask for time while we were paying rent. Do you remove the tenant that is paying rent, why? Just to get out the business, this is abuse. . Do we create a precedence for any health facility that defaults to be treated in such a similar manner, is this fair,” Mr Mpondela said. He said they had even written to the ministry of Health to intervene. On September 30, Justice Wilfred Mwila vacated the injunction granted to TMS Hospital restraining First Captial Bank from evicting them from the premises. Mr Justice Mwila said the bank had given the hospital ample notice and time to get their affairs in order and locate on an alternative property for the hospital.
GOVERNMENT has announced that the commemoration of the Day of National Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation in Lusaka has been moved from the Mulungushi International Conference Centre to the Lusaka Showgrounds. Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs Godfridah Sumaili disclosed this in a press statement issued on Friday. Reverend Sumaili stressed that the changes are for Lusaka Province and that all details of the commemoration scheduled for today remain unchanged. The Minister has since advised the general public to join in the prayers and adhere to prescribed Covid-19 health and safety guidelines. President Edgar Lungu is today expected to grace the commemoration of the Day of National Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation while the Vice President will be in Chipata. Meanwhile, Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) president, Nevers Mumba has called on the church to use the National Day of Prayer to reconcile different groupings in society such as political parties. Dr Mumba said everyone, including political players should genuinely engage and seek forgiveness of one another. He also challenged Church leaders tasked with the responsibility to spearhead this year’s prayers to go beyond the usual commemorations and reach out to marginalised communities affected with different afflictions. – ZANIS.

He has since asked Zambians to remember him in prayers. “Most importantly as the nation will no doubt recall that I lost my first wife Hope Makulu Banda to cancer and as fate would have it, my wife Thandie Chilongo Banda is a cancer survivor. “Therefore, her counsel, encouragement and support borne out of her own experience after having successfully battled this type of disease is a great source of inspiration and comfort to me,” Mr Banda said. HE police in Lusaka are contemplating banning traffic snap checks following continued reports of corrupt activities by officers on the ground. Traffic police officers in Lusaka have made it a business to extort money from motorists through mounting roadblocks beyond stipulated hours. Zambia Police Road Traffic Division Superintendent, Yoram Phiri, warned that the lawlessness by some traffic officers would force the service
to abolish snap checks. Mr Phiri said the high command was aware about the unbecoming behaviour of some traffic officers, saying that more than one check point was mounted on the same stretch. “Some officers shift from one point to another on Kafue road,” he said. Mr Phiri said that as a result some motorists were inspected more than three times as the officers were on the same route but at different points. He observed that this was inconveniencing motorists, especially those delivering goods and services and warned that failure to follow directive
would result in banning snap checks. Mr Phiri advised police officers to communicate with each other before mounting snap checks to avoid having close check points. “Like I said last time, police officers are not allowed to mount check points for a long time but only snap checks, but what we have heard is that they simply shift to another place but same route along Kafue Road, they move from one place to another. “If they not adhere to rules from the high command to run coordinated snap checks the plan will be to cancel these snap checks until it is well organized,”
UPND plans ‘mischief’ in Mpika By OLIVER SAMBOKO THE UPND plans to cause trouble in Mpika when their leader Hakainde Hichilema appears before Police for questioning on Tuesday, it has been learnt. Meanwhile, Home affairs minister Stephen Kampyongo has warned that government will not entertain any form of violence or trouble regardless of who perpetrates it. UPND deputy national youth chairman Gilbert Liswaniso said in a statement that has been circulated on party social media platforms that they would organise a convoy of over 1, 000 vehicles to escort Mr Hichilema to Mpika where is being sought by police.
“This time around, HH is not going alone, a thousand cars from all over the country will join him and as we drive along, more and more cars and buses will follow us,” he warned. Mr Liswaniso also called all members of the party across the country and those in the diaspora to hold peaceful protests wherever they maybe be. He accused the PF Government of abusing the police against the opposition while leaving PF supporters and cadres enjoy unfettered protection of being above the law. He said the party was aware that the summoning of Mr Hichilema was instigated by the PF who want to harm him
No voter must be left out, LAZ tells ECZ By SIMON MUNTEMBA THERE is need for the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ to ensure that no eligible voter is disenfranchised from voting on account of processes, and that everyone must be carried along including prisoners, says the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ). And LAZ honorary secretary, Sokwani Chilembo said the association was deeply concerned with the continued countrywide electoral violence. In a statement to the Daily Nation, Mr Chilembo disclosed that LAZ had paid a
so that he does not appear on the presidential ballot in next year’s general election. But Mr Kampyongo said he would not allow the UPND to move with a thousand vehicle convoy. Speaking at a press briefing yesterday Mr Kampyongo said, “not under my watch, I will not allow UPND to move with a thousand vehicle convoy”. He advised Mr Liswaniso to be a law abiding citizen and not to promote anarchy because he risked being “smoked out” from wherever he may be hiding. The Minister said it was sad that some political parties were daring government and when it acted, they claimed the civic space is shrinking and play victim.
courtesy call on the ECZ on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at which a number of critical issues surrounding the electoral process were discussed. Following the said engagement, he said, a 20-member delegation of LAZ led by its president Mr. Abyudi James Shonga, met with the ECZ and the Zambia Law Development Commission at Mulungushi International Conference Centre on Friday, October 9, 2020 to review the proposed Bill on voting by prisoners in the forthcoming general elections. “LAZ reiterates the need for ECZ to ensure that no eligible voter is disenfranchised from voting on account of processes, and that everyone must be carried along, including prisoners, subject to the guidance offered to ECZ by LAZ,” Mr Chilembo said. Meanwhile, Mr Chilembo condemned the continued countrywide electoral violence and urged the ECZ to take necessary steps to curb the worrying culture of electoral violence.
Well Done Lungu - Mwata Kazembe
…as he welcomes the ECL-MPEC to Luapula PARAMOUNT Chief Mwata Kalembe of the Luba Lunda people of Luapula Province has welcomed the Edgar Chagwa Lungu Multipurpose Empowerment Cooperative in his chiefdom. Mwata Kazembe said that President Edgar Lungu’s support to the downtrodden was appreciated. He was speaking when ECLMPEC national coordinator Ms Evelyn Banda and her team paid a courtesy call on him at his Kazembe palace in Mwansabombwe. Mwata Kazembe said he would ensure all his deserving subjects participated in the
programme and applied to access the various empowerment packages offered by the ECL-MPEC. The traditional leader urged the ECL- MPEC national coordinator and her team to ensure that they work with all traditional leaders in Luapula to ensure a smooth implementation of the empowerment programmes. Meanwhile, Ms Banda thanked the Mwata Kazembe for his commitment to improving the welfare of his subjects by partnering with the ECL-MPEC. Ms. Banda said that the ECL-MPEC aims at
empowering not less than 50 cooperatives per constituency in the province. Ms Banda said that the Edgar Chagwa Lungu Multipurpose Empowerment Cooperative considers traditional leaders as key stakeholders in the implementation of its programmes. “We hold you our traditional leaders in very high esteem and we are very cognizant of the fact that you play the most important role in the lives of our people in the grass roots” Ms Banda said. - SMART EAGLES.
he said. Some traffic officers have defied the directive from the high command and were mounting road blocks especially on highway roads instead of undertaking snap checks. Police officers have continued mounting roadblocks along Kafue road specifically between Chilanga and Makeni areas. One of the motorists, Kelvin Siame, said that the police officers were inconveniencing motorists and creating congestion. He said that police should instead monitor traffic flow along the road rather than being on the actual road.
Secure borders, Govt urged By SIMON MUNTEMBA THE apprehension of 12 illegal immigrants of Ethiopian origin who were apparently being trafficked along with others to an unknown destination is a reminder that human trafficking is still rife and Zambia therefore should tighten its security at entry points countrywide, Peter Chanda has said. Mr Chanda, who is New Congress Party president was reacting to a news report that the Immigration Department in Nyimba had apprehended 12 illegal immigrants of Ethiopian origin while 15 others, including six Zambians accompanying them were on the run. The 27 Ethiopians were reported to be on their way to South Africa when the mini bus they were in belonging to Fleetwood School of Chipata fell into a ditch while trying to escape the Kacholala police check point in Nyimba yesterday. One of the apprehended Ethiopians revealed that the driver wanted the Ethiopians to use a bush path while he and five other Zambians pass through the police checkpoint to reunite at a later point. In September this year, an additional 26 Ethiopians enroute to South Africa were apprehended in a suspected human trafficking case in Nyimba. Seventeen-year-old Abdilwas Ahmed of Halaba in Ethiopia said that he and 25 others were apprehended by immigration officers in Nyimba as they were trying to cross into neighbouring Mozambique. But Mr Chanda wondered how many such trips have gone undetected. He said in an interview that in as much as Zambia was an accommodating country, the nation could not continue to allow illegal entries into as such compromise national security. “While we welcome Ethiopians and indeed other foreigners who want to visit our country or use it as a transit point to their destination, they should use legal channels for entry,” he said. He said that was the only way Zambians would ascertain as citizens that they were not exposing themselves to wrong elements capable of planting discord or indeed criminals who would end up terrorising them. Cancellation of Ndola mobilisation rally right move Dear Editor, THE Students Mobilisation Coordinator’s office welcomes the decision by the Patriotic Front national mobilisation committee chairman Mr Richard Musukwa to cancel the Copperbelt Province mobilisation rally which was planned for yesterday at Musa Kasonka Stadium and was to feature two South African musicians. We also wish to acknowledge the efforts of provincial mobilisation committee chairman Bowman Chilosha Lusambo for his efforts in growing the party on the Copperbelt. As a matter of fact, we note with great appreciation the reasons cited by all concerned stakeholders including the ministry of Health for guidelines on prevention of the Covid-19 under the prevailing circumstances. The students’ mobilisation team is committed to ensuring adherence to all the conditions set out in the prevention of the worst consequences. We also wish to acknowledge the concerns raised by our local artists who feels it’s time to recognise them and give them an opportunity to profit from such concerts. We further urge all students to remain calm and wait upon the new dates that will be set by the stakeholders for our participation in mobilisation activities. IBRAHIM KABWE MWAMBA, National Students Mobilisation Coordinator.

Unbeaten Everton hold Liverpool
EVERTON came from behind twice to maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League in a Merseyside derby thriller as Liverpool were denied a stoppage-time winner by the video assistant referee. Sadio Mane put the visitors ahead in the third minute but they were furious soon afterwards when a wild challenge by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford on Virgil van Dijk, committed after an offside decision, saw the defender having to go off injured with VAR failing to review the tackle. Everton, who had won their previous seven games in all competitions, equalised swiftly at Goodison Park when Michael Keane headed in a corner from the outstanding James Rodriguez. - BBC
‘DON’T GIVE UP’ …Shonga urged to fight on to redeem his career By MICHAEL MIYOBA
Z
A M B I A Sports Fans Association patron Peter Makembo has urged Zambian international striker Justin Shonga not to give up his blocked move to Europe by South African giants Orlando Pirates who blocked his move to Europe before dumping him at Tshakuma FC. And Makembo has hailed government for pledging to support Chipolopolo coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic in his quest to redeem Zambia’s chances to qualify for the 2022 Camerron Africa Cup of Nations. After he was unveiled as one of the new players at South African premiership side Tshakhuma FC, Shonga said Pirates blocked his move to Europe before dumping him at Tshakuma FC. The former Nkwazi FC striker said his move to Tsha-
kuma FC was planned by Orlando Pirates as he did not know anything about it until he was called into the Pirates office by the chairman Irvin Khoza. "I think this move was already planned by Pirates because I didn't even know I was coming this side because I already had other plans with my own agent," Shonga told the media after being unveiled in Polokwane on Thursday. “The plans I had, I wanted to leave South Africa and I wanted to go to Europe. Clubs were waiting for me but unfortunately Pirates never wanted to release me by that time. "By the time Pirates released me, the window period was closed in Europe." However, Makembo urged Shonga to stay focused and work hard at his new club to gain the coach’s trust at national team level. Makembo said the former Nkwazi striker is a talented young players who can redeem himself following the numerous challenges he faced at Orlando Pirates where he spent the 2019/2020 season without a goal as he was mostly on the bench. “Shonga should not be discouraged by the move from Pirates to the new team from
Limpopo. Let him use the opportunity given to show that he can still be called for national team assignments because he is a Chipolopolo player,” Makembo said. “The move may affect him psychologically but if he impresses at Tshakuma FC, European clubs will still come for him and he will be able to win back his position at the national team,” Makembo said. Shonga, faced disciplinary action at Pirates before last season's bio-bubble along with Thembinkosi Lorch after they were found guilty of breaching club protocols. Meanwhile, Makembo has hailed President Edgar Lungu for supporting the growth of sports through the Ministry of Sports which ledged to assist Chipolopolo coach with everything he may need to prepare the team for the AFCON qualifiers against Botswana next month. Makembo acknowledged that the Serbian needs everyone’s support including the fans to deliver positive results. He reaffirmed his associations’ commitment to support the Chipolopolo during the crucial back to back AFCON qualifiers against Botswana set for next month.
Copper Queens step up Cosafa preps By MICHAEL MIYOBA THE Zambia senior women national team has intensified preparations for the 2020 Cosafa Women Championship set to kick off on November 4 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. And speaking during an interview after a morning training session at Edwin Imboela Stadium yesterday, Copper Queens coach Bruce Mwape said the team is in good shape with no injuries. Mwape said the team’s target is to win this year’s regional competition after winning silver at the 2019 edition. “The plan is to come back as winners because we have participated in the COSAFA for many years and reaching the final last year was an indication that we can also be champions for the COSAFA tournament. “This time around, people are expecting us to win the competition because of being the champions representing Africa at the Olympics. All our fans are expecting us to start on a good note buy winning the COSAFA,” Mwape said. Mwape said the Copper Queens will play two friendly matches with local clubs as they prepare for the Cosafa tournament. Meanwhile, the Shepolopolo coach said two foreign stars in Barbra Banda and Rachel Kundananji could join the team after the leagues in China and Kazakhstan finished. “We have Barbra in China. The league just ended and if she comes next week we will be able to look at her fitness if need be she will be included in the team that will go to south Africa and even with Kundananji it is the same story she might join the team,” Mwape said. Zambia will compete alongside hosts South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Comoros Islands, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, while East African team Tanzania will participate as the guest nation. The group stage draws for the championship will be held on October 20 and the eight participating teams will be split into two groups of four and challenge for a place in the semi-finals.

FATHER ‘RAPES, IMPREGNATES’ DAUGHTER, BLAMES A BAT
A
KWEKWE man has been arraigned before the courts for allegedly raping and impregnating his biological daugh-
ter. The man, whose identity cannot be revealed to protect the victim, but is from Chiwundura, allegedly raped and impregnated his 19-year-old daughter. He was arraigned before Kwekwe Magistrate Ms Mildred Matuvi facing rape charges. He was remanded in custody to October 24 for provision of trial date. Prosecuting, Ms Ethel Bhumhure told the court that sometime in June this year, the accused person and the complainant were staying together at a farm near Kwekwe.
One day he alledgedly sneaked into the complainant’s bedroom, Ms Bhumure told the court. While in the bedroom, the accused person allegedly sneaked into the blankets where the complainant was sleeping. He then threatened her with death if she dared scream before going on to rape her once. The accused person temporarily left the room before returning after some minutes and raped the accused person twice. After the act he threatened her with death and left the room. The matter came to light when the complainant visited her aunt who discovered that she was pregnant. She was taken to hospital for tests
where she was discovered to be 20 weeks pregnant. The matter was then reported to police leading to the arrest of the accused. The accused in his defence left the court in stiches after he claimed to have gone mad after going after a bat. “She saw a bat and screamed for help and I quickly rushed to her rescue. The bat however disappeared into darkness and we went mad. I ended up sleeping with her as I thought I was in my bedroom. We did it three times, I remember. But soon after she regained consciousness that is when I discovered I was in the wrong room,” the accused told the court. - THE CHRONICLE.
Cambodian farmers deploy scarecrows to ward off virus ARMED with a stick, a floral-shirted scarecrow with a plastic pot for a head stands guard in front of a rural Cambodian home — a sentry erected by superstitious farmers to ward off the coronavirus. Known as “Ting Mong” in Khmer, the creatively rendered scarecrows often pop up in villages that have been hard-hit by infectious diseases like dengue or waterborne diarrhoea. “I’ve set up Ting Mong to prevent the coronavirus from threatening my family,” says farmer Sok Chany, 45. She has two posted in front of her wooden stilt home in Kampong Cham province, about 110 kilometres (70 miles) northeast of the capital Phnom Penh.
The other is dressed in camo-green and has a stick propped like a rifle across its hay-stuffed chest. “It is our ancient superstition to set up Ting Mongs when there are dangerous diseases or to avert evil,” she
tells AFP. The majority-Buddhist kingdom has a strong strain of animism incorporated into the daily lives and rituals of Cambodians, with many believing that spirits are tied to places, animals
and things. Ting Mongs are meant to ward off evil spirits wishing to bring harm to an unsuspecting family by spreading disease. In Sok Chany’s Trapeang Sla village, no chances are taken — an effigy is tied to the gates of nearly every home, though constructed with varying degrees of effort. Some are elaborately dressed in military uniforms or floral pyjamas, while others simply have stuffed bags with sunglasses perched on them for a head. Farmer Ton Pheang stuffs old clothing up the arm of his Ting Mong, who is dressed in a bright pink shirt and has a helmet for its head. . - AFP
Jilted man threatens to kill wife with lightning WHILE many people are happy that the rainy season is upon us, a woman from Ntabazinduna is living in fear of losing her life after her estranged husband threatened to kill her by lightning while in her house. Rhoda Dlodlo from Madlelenyoni Line claimed her ex-husband Elias Zondo from Dobha Line in ward 5, also in Ntabazinduna, threatened that he had the power to send lightning to kill her as punishment for deserting him. In a desperate bid to stop Zondo from carrying out his chilling threats, a fearful Dlodlo approached the Bulawayo Civil Court and sought a protection order against him. “I want a protection order to be granted against my ex-husband Elias Zondo. We parted ways because he was an irresponsible man.
He was failing to financially support me. He is a drunkard and would drink beer from morning till late at night. “He would come home very drunk and start insulting me with vulgar language. On 17 September he followed me to my sister’s house where I’m now staying. He came armed with an axe and knobkerrie and was
threatening to harm me. “He also threatened to bewitch me saying he was going to send lightning to kill me together with those I’m staying with. He is also coming late at night at our home and lies in wait in the yard. He is a very dangerous man and I now feel insecure that he can harm me together with those people I’m staying with,” said Dlodlo.
Zondo didn’t, however, refute his ex-wife’s accusations. He said he carried out the threats in a bid to force Dlodlo to reconcile with him. “Yes, I followed her to where she is now staying because I wanted her to come back home so that we can stay together. I was hurt that she deserted me so that is why I followed her to her place of residence. This is also because I didn’t expect her to leave me just like that,” protested Zondo. His efforts to reconcile with Dlodlo seemed to have been dampened after the presiding magistrate Nkosinomusa Ncube sternly ordered him that for the next six months he should not to go to her house without her consent or to behave in a violent manner towards her. - B METRO
Chubby dog put on strict diet after getting hilariously wedged in doggy door A CHUNKY dog who made the most of pigging out on KFC and steak while his owner was away has been put on a diet after getting stuck in a door and ripping it clean off its hinges. Owner Charmaine Hulley got Drax two years ago, when she gave the poor pup a home after he was found living on the streets looking frightened and malnourished. She said when she first bought Drax home he was too scared to look at anyone or eat, but fast forward to now and the problem is long gone, with the dog indulging in his new life of luxury. He transformed from skin and bones into a healthy figure, but recently Charmaine headed off to live with her mum for a few months for personal reasons. She left him and her three other rescue dogs in the care of her partner Taylor, who due to working long hours said he ended up feeding Drax “a lot of human food, steak and KFC”, as reported by LadBible. Drax’s weight gain was cruelly exposed when Taylor visited Charmaine with the dogs and Drax got the doggy door wedged around his body while trying to fit through. In his defence, the door at Charmaine’s mums house is intended for little dogs, but his owners admitted even the one at his own home in Australia is getting “a bit snug”. - MIRROR

‘Hand washing now more important’ By NOEL IYOMBWA
OCTOBER 15 is Global Handwashing Day, a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.
This year’s event was organized by Water Aid in partnership with Peoples Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia and other cooperating partners. The Member of Parliament stated that the global pandemic has shone a light on the importance of washing hands, meaning the day now carries extra relevance. And Water Aid country representative Pamela Chisanga condemned the local authorities for the role they play in ensuring that there hygiene. HEN talking about job searching in Zambia, one of the lines you are certain to hear is “you need to know someone to get a job.” This is especially true for sectors like environmental conservation, where networking and making important professional contacts are often the most important component of a successful job search.
While this may not be issue for established professionals who are just looking to move from one organization to another, it is certainly a mammoth task for students and those looking to join the conservation space. Without anyone to give them proper career advice, it is easy for students studying various courses within the field of conservation to feel a little lost and disillusioned. That is why in August 2018, Wildlife Crime Prevention and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife launched Zambia’s first Conservation Careers Fair, a platform for students to interact and connect with established professionals who work in various conservation organizations. The Conservation Careers Fair aims to cultivate an environment that encourages inspired young Zambians to participate in conservation and to show them that conservation can be a rewarding and viable career path. The inaugural event, which was held at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, brought together over 20 conservation organizations and more than 500 students from the country’s top universities and colleges. Due to the increasing need for more networking opportunities for Zambia’s next generation of conservationists and the overwhelming responses that followed the 2018 event, the Conservation Careers Fair is now an annual event. In keeping with the Covid-19 times where major events are happening virtually, this year’s Conservation Careers Fair was held online through Facebook Live and YouTube. The Virtual Conservation Careers Fair 2020, held under the theme: Adaptability for survival – for job seekers & organizations, opened with a keynote talk by Ministry of Tourism and Arts Permanent Secretary Dr Auxilia Ponga. In her address, the PS called on the youth to
CONSERVATION CAREERS FAIR: Inspiring Zambia’s Next Generation of Conservationists
identify opportunities and bring refresh approaches to solving the many conservation challenges that Zambia faces. “We face rapid population growth, expanding agriculture and infrastructure, and globalized demand for natural resources. All of these are exciting potential careers paths. One exciting thing about
this year’s event is that it was not a one-day affair. It was spread over a period of four days from Monday 5th October to Thursday 8th October, with morning and afternoon sessions. The sessions featured inspirational talks and career advice from prominent local and international conservationists, spotlight exhibitions of some
of the wonderful efforts being made by various conservation organizations to protect Zambia’s ecosystems and the wildlife they hold. The sessions also featured master classes given by recruitment experts on topics like “Everything you need to know to get the job”, “Got the job, now what?”, which provided an insight into employment opportunities for young Zambians. Zambia faces many conservation challenges that require young minds and a fresh approach. This makes inspiriting and boosting the confidence of bright young Zambians, the future of conservation, cardinal. For this to happen, young people need to know what a career in conservation looks like, who their potential employers are and some of the pressing issues the conservation sector is grappling with. Some of the challenges facing conservation require an interdisciplinary approach. That is why when we talk about jobs in conservation we are not only referring to traditional professions like ecology and environmental education. It is becoming increasingly common to find lawyers, communicators, teachers, marketers, veteri-
nary doctors and many others from different professions rendering their expertise to the conservation sector. Some of the inspirational talks shared at the 2020 Virtual Conservation Careers Fair include “From the African Savannah to Capitol Hill” a chat with Jimmiel Mandima - Deputy Vice President of Conservation at International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), “The business of conservation: private sector wildlife management” a chat with Chanda Mwale - Operations Manager at Wildlife Producers Association of Zambia, and a Masterclass on Getting the Job: Everything you need to know about CVs
and Cover Letters by Emma Harvey. Anyone who is passionate about protecting Zambia’s ecosystems and its abundant wildlife can access these inspiring and insightful video resources on the Conservation Careers Zambia website and on its Facebook and YouTube pages. In addition to the Conservation Careers Fair, which has become an unmissable calendar event in the Zambian conservation space, Wildlife Crime Prevention teamed up with ARC Zambia to create a dedicated jobs board were job seekers can find the latest conservation and environmental jobs within Zambia and the region.

ZAMBIA’S UNSUNG HEROES: Chola Mwitwa’s dream of a greater Zambia slowly comes to life (Part 2)
H
E is a man on a special mission – to promote excellence in Zambia by focussing on quality and productivity improvement in every sector of the country’s social and economic sector.
His patriotism, and commitment to improving the quality of local products, transforming the workers’ mindset towards hard work, creativity, and innovativeness is unflinching. Mr Chola Abel Mwitwa, 61, heads one of government’s smallest units but tasked with a huge responsibility of ‘planting’ a culture of Continuous Improvement in work processes and innovation amongst the people and organisations. He is very hopeful that that dream would become a reality soon. He boosts of placing Zambia on the world map of countries promoting quality and productivity improvement and making it the first African country to compete and mint Gold Prizes at the International Convention on Quality Control Circles (ICQCC) in 2018 in Singapore. Today, we publish the last segment of the recent interview with the KAIZEN Institute of Zambia (KiZ) Chief Executive Officer, conducted by reporter Mwansa Pintu. What role do you hope to play, as KiZ in Zambia’s transformation towards attainment of Vision 2030? KAIZEN Institute of Zambia Limited hopes to play an important role in Zambia’s transformation towards attainment of 2030 vision. As you know we at the Institute transformation is at the heart of everything we do. This is because the very management methodology we are promoting, KAIZEN, in Japanese means Change for Better or simply continuous improvement in English. We therefore see KAIZEN playing an important role in Zambia’s transition a prosperous middle income country status by 2030. Our vision is that by 2030, we should have an economy that is competitive, self-sustaining, dynamic and resilient to any external shocks, supports stability and protection of biological and physical systems and is free from donor dependence. In addition, it should have stable social and cultural systems that support human capital formation. Among other things, the nation Zambians aspire for, should be characterised by 21 aspirations that are specified in the 2030 Vision: We have looked at the 21 aspirations that Zambia will be characterised by 2030 and established that the KAIZEN Institute of Zambia Limited can play a pivotal role in the attainment of the following 6 aspirations: 1) (e) Diversified and balanced and strong industrial sector, a modern agricultural sector and an efficient and productive services sector; 2) (g) Technologically proficient, fully able to adapt, innovate and invest using its human and natural resources; 3) (i) Sustained high and increasing productivity levels with regard to every factor of production; 4) (l)Exemplary work ethics, honesty, high human and ethical values, quality consciousness and the quest for excellence; 5) (r) Decent work opportunities that ensure respect for fundamental
human rights and principles; 6) Safe and secure social environment. We see Kaizen contributing significantly if supported to play a greater role. You know the goal of Kaizen is to drive ongoing improvement. Kaizen drives people to participate in improving their own processes by identifying forms of waste and elimination them through Value Stream Mapping. This type of Kaizen often is used to drive a cultural transformation because it requires everyone to think about improvement every day, everywhere. Through Quality Control Circle (QCC) activities, kaizen Contribute to the improvement & development of the enterprise, respect for humanity and build a happy workplace which is meaningful to work in and display human capabilities fully & eventually drew out infinite possibilities. QCC is defined as A Quality Control Circle is a small group consisting of first line employees who continually control and improve the quality of their work, products and services. QC Circles operate autonomously, which creates empowerment of all levels of organisation to tackle issues around Quality, Cost, Delivery, Service and Safety. You have so far successfully worked with various companies/organisations to them improve quality and productivity. Kindly tell us about three or four of those companies and how exactly they been transformed after embracing the KAIZEN concept? Since inception the KiZ has worked with over 70 organisations from both the private and public sector with varying degrees of success. These include Toyota Zambia, Strongpak Limited, Kafue Steel, Zambia Revenue Authority, ZESCO Limited, Road Development Agency, Californian Beverages Limited, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Local Government, ZamLeather Limited, Kanyama, Chawama and Choma Level One Hospitals, HITACHI Construction Machinery Limited. Let me just highlight a few of the results obtained by the organisations that have embraced Kaizen Ministry of Health through Team Cheetah reduced Tender Evaluation time from 45 Days to 21. Imagine the implication of this. The time taken to evaluate tenders had a direct effect on the time taken to complete procurement
and in turn time taken to complete projects including delivery of medicines. Zamwood Furnishers, one of the SME outfits in Livingstone, engaged in the manufacture of wooden products, has embraced Kaizen and has managed reduce in-process delivery time from 3.5 Hrs. to 2 Hrs in less than six months. This project aimed at Eliminating non-value adding activities in the production process in order to reduce in-process delivery time and increase production volume. ZESCO Livingstone, through Kaizen activity reduced the number of Faults by 39% within three months. Imagine the benefits to customers, both individuals and corporates in the communities, and businesses that depend on electric energy. Business such as Saloons, Metal Fabricators, Barbershops, etc would work slightly longer hours servicing their customers and resist closure. Zamshu, a footwear manufactur-
ing division of Zamleather Ltd, and a fully owned subsidiary of Zambeef Products PLC, has been implementing Kaizen for some time now. Through Kaizen, the company is using it to maintain Zero Defect rate and improve their leather processing and routine machine maintenance. This has led steady production growth, more distribution channels opened across the country, product quality has improved to international standards, the company is now supplying Zesco Limited and Lusaka water and sewerage company with their quality safety shoes and the company is now supplying PEP with a variety of School shoes. Chilanga Town Council ( T e a m Perfectors) has embraced K A I Z E N and within one year managed to reduce the unin-
spected business premises from 43% to less than 10% as well as the reduction of the time taken to issue the fire certificate from 14 days to 7 days through the elimination of non-value adding steps in their processes. This was achieved through development and adherence to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is This enable the council adhere to the law and increase revenue collection from increased number of inspections. What is the certification by KiZ all about and what does it entail? As you be aware, one of the functions of the Institute is Kaizen Training and Certification. This is done in order to ensure the quality of Kaizen provision. To ensure quality, we have developed a Kaizen training curriculum with support from JICA Experts that is above what you find in Africa and the Assessment Criteria. We provide this training step by step from level 1 to 4 and thereafter Total Quality Management (TQM) from level 1 to 2. We would be commencing training this year in November beginning with Kaizen training level 1 and 2. Do you, as KIZ, have any specific goals or targets as regards the attainment of a more productive and quality work culture in Zambia? Yes, we have, how can we not have. Our goal to give equal opportunity to every Zambian to benefit from Kaizen. We also have a five plan in which we shall strengthen the Institute to be Centre of Excellency in the promotion of out Golden Tringle of KAIZEN to serve Zambia and the Region. In this plan, though now affected by Covid 19, we intend to introduce KAIZEN in all 10 provinces of Zambia by end of next year, train over 1000 people over 5 year period deploy Kaizen in over 300 organisations within the coming five years.
