…our members are targeted for arrests By SIMON MUNTEMBA UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has complained of his senior party officials and supporters’ arrest during elections time. Mr Hichilema said his party members were being denied their democratic

right to freely sell their message to the electorates. In a statement, Mr Hichilema who demanded for the immediate release from custody of their party deputy Secretary General Patrick Mucheleka and his colleagues from incarceration said the UPND was treated unfairly whenever there were elections.

“Each time there has been elections anywhere in the country, our senior party officials, supporters and members have been targeted for arrest with a view to intimidate and prevent them from carrying out their democratic right to freely exercise their freedom to sell their message to the electorates,” Mr Hichilema said. DICTATORSHIP OR ALLIANCES

THE UPND has attitude issues which must be addressed if they hope to regain the trust of its alliance partners. The party is coming out as more of a dictatorship than an entity willing to give and take in order to create alliances that last. It is shocking that for a party with hopes of forming government, is not willing to bend to accommodate interests of alliance partners. Sean Tembo, the former Opposition Alliance spokesman, has no kind words for the UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema’s attitude towards alliance partners and his assumption that every leader must bow to his dictates without receiving anything in return. From the PeP leaders condemnation of the UPND, one can deduce that only those who are willing to subordinate themselves will work with Zambia’s main opposition party. This is because Mr Hichilema has no regard for any party or indeed any other leader’s opinion. This is definitely not the spirit of an alliance, more so, one which aims to promote unity of purpose. There can hardly be unity when alliance partners are treated as minions whose opinion must be approved by the superior partner, in this case, Mr Hichilema. A loose definition of an alliance is a grouping representing parties with different interests but with a common goal. It is baffling therefore that a person involved in an alliance would be so rigid that alliance partners are forced to leave. So far five alliance members have left the group. This inability to accommodate views and ideas of others is what has rendered the UPND under the leadership of Hakainde Hichilema ineffective at retaining friends even in alliances which they form. From PeP leader, Sean Tembo’ s narration, the UPND is not looking for equal partnership, but people to dominate. Mr Tembo observed that the UPND is looking for friends to escort their leader to State House and not to share power. In this context, he describes mr Hichilema as selfish and weak because a strong leader would not mind sharing people or indeed fulfilling a gentleman’s agreement on power sharing. Consequently, Mr Tembo feels that Chishimba Kambwili who, is aspiring to be Hakainde Hichilema’s running mate will soon bite the dust. And to shield her party from embarrassment, NDC national spokesperson, Saboi Imboela, has said her party was not in any alliance with UPND but it was just a mere partner and not looking to be the running mate. It is not really surprising that the NDC would want to come out this way because they are trying to save face in case this alliance does not work as Mr Tembo predicts. If UPND was not willing to allow PeP to contest just one constituency and a ward as an alliance partner, what do the other alliance entities hope to gain from this grouping?. Mr Tembo in a statement said in his political blackmail, Mr Hichilema and his followers have been advancing ‘defacto alliances’ in which they want every other opposition political party to agree with them and work in concert with them, failure to which such a political party is a surrogate of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF). He said Mr Hichilema was now seeking to create a defacto alliance with National Democratic Congress Party (NDC) leader Chishimba Kambwili in his favour to get to State House. “He wants us to rally behind him for free and escort him to State House. Even politically naive people like embattled Chishimba Kambwili who think that Mr Hichilema will make him his running mate will soon bite the dust,” Mr Tembo said. Mr Tembo who obviously took exception to being accused of being a PF surrogate, further described the UPND leader as, “But being politically weak and selfish is not the only handicap for Mr Hichilema, he also has an inflated sense of being smart. He falsely believes that he can outwit his political allies. But his attempts to outwit his political allies are so shallow that they usually border on crookedness.” In all this war of words, what stands out is that the UPND has selfish traits which are unacceptable in an alliance. Arrogance and a know-it-all attitude will not win the party friends. Fore warned is forearmed.

SERVING WITH INTEGRITY

THE FLAWED COPYCAT LEADERSHIP STYLE OF NEVERS MUMBA

By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE

NEW hope MMD president Nevers Mumba is always caught up in one controversy or the other, but he became even more contentious when he attempted to justify his claims that the election result in the recently held Lukashya parliamentary by-election were not a true reflection of what transpired on the ground. He embarrassingly alleged that his party had overwhelming evidence of the rigging that happened in favour of the PF candidate, Mr George Chisanga, adding that if not checked, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) together with the PF would plunge the country into chaos especially in the 2021 general elections. Demonstrating his lack of judgement, he also accused the PF of setting up an Information Communication and Technology (ICT) centre in Lusaka whose function was to manipulate the election result next year. The MMD leader also called for the overhaul of the current ECZ and put in place new leadership that would deliver a credible, free and fair election next year. Perhaps emboldened by the Malawian Head of State’s day-return official visit to Zambia, the MMD leader alleged that in its current form, the ECZ was compromised, and called on all political stakeholders to take keen interest in the matter and demand for change at the electoral body when most of the Zambian people felt that it was unacceptable and unnecessary to do so. So, did the MMD leader’s actions smack of sedition? Not quite. But for many observers like myself, who passionately support Pentecostal reverends moving into politics, especially in Africa, the MMD leader, turned out to be a huge disappointment to many. Thankfully, a first Pentecostal president had just emerged in Malawi’s Lazarus Chakwera. Known and unknown to many, Nevers Mumba attended the swearingin-ceremony of the newly-elected president of Malawi. He was invited to the ceremony as a special guest to the

president-elect. He was the only foreign dignitary at the ceremony that saw Malawi install the sixth president. The fact is PF politicians are, at worst, just a little uncomfortable at the astonishing publicity of this kind of evangelic turn of events. But at best they are actually rather grateful that the likes of Malawi’s Lazarus Chakwera were in the country on an official state visit. This is because the main goal of the Pentecostal churches is, officially at least, benediction and salvation of poor souls rather than political agitation. They believe God appoints leaders and Christians are duty bound to pray for them. If Zambia is suffering from a scarcity of good leadership then it is God’s design. All of this puts the MMD leader in an interesting position. Although on the surface a devout Pentecostal televangelist, who has the keen ear of Malawi’s incumbent president, it has been said that he would prefer to copy and paste the bouncing back to power in Malawi of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) which in his view, offers hope to the MMD in Zambia. This is believed to be connected to his unmistakable copycat leadership style of antagonism towards the ECZ and ruling party officials whom he accused of rigging the just-ended parliamentary by-elections. In response, the PF said that it was planning to take the MMD leader to court following his allegations that the ruling party rigged the recently-held Lukashya parliamentary by-election. But analysts say this is a symptom of the MMD leader’s flawed copycat leadership style. He wants to copy the seemingly idyllic leadership lifestyle of Dr Chakwera. This may result in short-term success, but rarely will it yield the lasting impact that comes only from a deeper study of great leaders. So how can the MMD leader avoid falling into the copycat leadership trap? Whilst there is certainly nothing wrong with recognising the great style and achievements in others, one does need to exercise some caution to not simply become a mimic or copycat. Effective leadership requires more than simply

tracing the steps of those role models one regards as successful. If the MMD leader was to think about the great leaders he had worked for in the past invariably they were leading political parties to new levels of growth, breaking into new support bases or holding vote-rich share during times when everyone else was going emptyhanded. They were bringing people and talents together to reach new levels of political performance and they weren’t doing this by simply copying what everyone else around them was doing. If Nevers Mumba can’t find his own voice, he’ll end up with a vocabulary that belongs to someone else, mouthing words that were written by some speechwriter or mimicking the language of some other leader who’s nothing like him at all. If the words he speaks are not his words but someone else’s, he will not in the long term be able to be consistent in word and deed. He will not have the integrity to lead. Undeniably, copycat behaviour is ultimately both self limiting and unsustainable. Whilst the MMD leader can definitely learn from those around him, he ultimately needs to make it relevant to his own teams and political agendas. Failing to find his own voice and style risks him as being kept small and perceived as disingenuous or lacking in confidence and/or capability to do what he was elected to do. Truly successful leaders have achieved their success by distilling their own core values, experiences and exposures and matching them with environments that embrace these attributes. Combined with a very strong and clear understanding about what it is they need to do and deliver to be successful they have learnt to master the art of really ‘showing up’ with authenticity and purpose. All in all, as long as Zambia continues to operate in a political climate of volatility, uncertainty, change and unpredictability the need for unique leadership will not cease. Opposition elements and those new to political leadership in the country would do well to remember this.

HH protests arrests From page 1 He said the intolerance to dissenting opinions should not drive the ruling party into destroying the country’s cherished heritage by abusing government machinery such as the police and other institutions, which he said was unacceptable and must come to end. Police have, however, insisted that only law breakers were arrested. Northern Province Police Commissioner, Richard Mweene recently said the UPND deputy secretary and two other officials were arrested and charged for alleged aggravated robbery and malicious damage to property. And New Congress Party president, Peter Chanda said Mr Hichilema must not cry foul for deliberately breaking the law. Mr Chanda said, “Hakainde Hichilema has been advocating for lawlessness among his members and when the law catches up with them, he should not cry foul. Let him just change for the better and become a law abiding citizen.” He also advised Mr Hichilema to tame his supporters who always want to take the law into their own hands during elections. “HH must also tame his unruly supporters who always want to take the law on their hands during elections if they are to avoid being arrested,” Mr Chanda said.

Mpenzeni calls for peace By CHARLES MUSONDA PARAMOUNT Chief Mpenzeni of the Ngoni people has called on politicians to safeguard Zambia’s peace and unity ahead of the 2021 general elections. Chief Mpenzeni has also appealed to fellow traditional leaders not to be divisive but to embrace and safeguard everyone. Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Chief Mpenzeni appealed to politicians not to engage in campaigns of insults because use of vulgar language in unacceptable as it leads to violence. He called on fellow chiefs across Zambia to work with the government because they cannot work with a government that is not yet born. “The government of the day is the one responsible for provision of essential services like medical facilities,

education and national development. When there is hunger in the nation people look up to the government of the day for help. “So let’s respect the government of the day and if all those aspiring for leadership come into office we will respect them. President Lungu and his government should be given chance to work so that they can concentrate on their responsibilities. I am not saying this because President and I come from Eastern but there is need for respect for authorities. If someone is voted as a leader there is need to respect him,” Chief Mpenzeni said. He also thanked President Lungu for appointing Christopher Mvunga as Bank of Zambia Governor, saying he too should be given chance to work. He said Mr. Mvunga’s appointment is exciting news and came as a surprise. Chief Mpenzeni called on Mr. Mvunga to respect and consult people as he executes his duties as head of the central bank because he cannot work effectively alone.

Home News By SANFROSSA MANYINDA THE demolition of houses by Mopani Copper Mines has attracted criticism of vice President Inonge Wina who has chided the company for the wanton destruction. Mopani, she said, had no right to evict people from their pieces of land when it was already in the process of abandoning the land through its pending plans to place the company under care and maintenance. The Vice President said it was unconscionable that families were left homeless when their houses were on Tuesday last week demolished by a combined force of State police and Mopani Copper Mines officers in Kitwe's Mindola West on allegations that the piece of land belonged to the mining giant's farm. She was speaking when the affected developers expressed shock that Mopani was claiming ownership of the land which was given to them by the council after following the due process as well as obtaining title deeds from the Ministry of Lands in Ndola. At the time of the demolition, the developers had a court injunction to prevent Mopani from demolishing their structures which was however disregarded claiming that it was not a real one. And the mining giant confirmed that it undertook the demolition exercise in order to secure a small piece of its land which had been encroached. "We cannot see how Mopani can act in such an inhuman manner at the same time it is in the process of leaving many people out of employment.

VICE PRESIDENT CONDEMNS MOPANI DEMOLITION

Vice President Inonge Wina What happened is extremely inhuman and we are saddened that Zambians are suffering at the hands of fellow Zambians as well as some foreign investors," she said. The Vice President maintained that government would not allow man-made disasters that were costing government huge sums of money to continue occurring, hence the call for such acts to stop. She also advised institutions that order for such kind of demolitions to always dialogue

and consult before giving a go ahead. She maintained that demolishing structures without notices in the middle of the night while people were sleeping was an infringement of human rights which should not be tolerated by anyone. She however warned the citizens to be on guard and not to be swindled by some individuals who purport to have legal documentation of pieces of land they may be selling when, in fact not.

Mr Kambwili

EMBATTLED politically naive Chishimba Kambwili who is aspiring to be Hakainde Hichilema’s running mate will soon bite the dust, opposition Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) president Sean Tembo has predicted. But NDC national spokesperson, Saboi Imboela, said her party was not in any alliance with UPND but it was just a mere partner. Mr Tembo has accused Mr Hichilema of being not only weak but a selfish person who could not willingly give away even a single constituency or ward in return for the support of any alliance partners. Mr Tembo in a statement said in his political blackmail,

"We call upon security enforcement officers whom we have the confidence in to arrest such characters and if they fail, we will conclude that they are compromised," The Vice President said. She said that there was need to bring sanity in the governance of the country before people could start taking the law into their own hands. And Ms Wina assured the 499 flood and demolition victims that are currently housed at Hellen Kaunda School grounds and Buchi Hotel that government would continue with the feeding programme until they were settled. She later visited the place where the victims would be offered land and relocated in Mufuchani area. The Vice President is on a three day working visit in Kitwe district. Kitwe city has of late witnessed frequent massive demolitions of properties alleged to have been built on illegally obtained pieces of land. Recently, about 150 households from Luyando Community Association had their houses demolished by Mopani Copper mines in Mindolo North after the mine claimed that the community had encroached on its land.

BETUZ nods inquiry on privatisation By PETER SICHALI

THE commission of inquiry on privatisation is long overdue and will provide answers to many questions on process, Basic Teachers’ Union of Zambia (BETUZ) has observed. BETUZ spokesperson, Henry Sinkala, said the commission of inquiry was a perfect idea so that those who were innocent could be exonerated through the findings. On the other hand, he said, those who took pecuniary advantage during the

privatisation process should be visited by the long arm of the law. Mr Sinkala said privatisation would also provide a platform to clear some people while certain matters of national importance would be amicably rested. He said Commission of inquiry on privatisation was not a witch-hunt as it was being perceived by people some people. “This a positive stride by the Republican President,” Mr Sinkala said. And Zambia Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) Muchinga province Coordinator,

Kasanda Nondo, thanked President Edgar Lungu for listening to calls from a crosssection of society. Mr Nondo said commission of inquiry would answer several questions and ensure that those that dubiously benefited from process were brought to book. “Zambia has enough laws and agencies to deal with corruption of yesterday, today and tomorrow. It is good the President is listening to all sides on Privatization debate,” Mr Nondo said.

Mr Hichilema and his followers have been advancing ‘defacto alliances’ in which they want every other opposition political party to agree with them and work in concert with them, failure to which such a political party is a surrogate of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF). He narrated that having worked with Mr Hichilema as chairperson of the media affairs committee as well as the

chairperson of finance committee for the Opposition Alliance, he decided to quit because he realized that it was just benefiting the UPND. Mr Tembo said after investing all his effort and sacrifices, Mr Hichilema was not willing to allocate some constituencies and wards for PeP to solely contest in in 2021, as part of the Opposition Alliance package. “He point blankly told us that since UPND is more popular than PeP, the best he can offer is for our candidates to contest on the UPND ticket! To us, this amounted to dissolving our party and joining the UPND, which was contrary to our understanding and expectation from the Opposition Alliance. So l told Mr Hichilema that l will be withdrawing my party from his Alliance, and so we left,” Mr Tembo said. He said Mr Hichilema was a

weak and selfish guy who lacked the mental strength and prowess necessary to kick out the ruling party in 2021. “But being politically weak and selfish is not the only handicap for Mr Hichilema, he also has an inflated sense of being smart. He falsely believes that he can outwit his political allies. But his attempts to outwit his political allies are so shallow that they usually border on crookedness,” he said And today, he said, despite being politically weak and yet selfish and crooked, Mr Hichilema feels that he is entitled to Sean Tembo’s political support. How dare you sir! Just like Sata and his then PF fought and beat MMD, you sir need to fight and beat PF by yourself. “While we were being attacked by Paul Moonga and his thugs along Cairo Road, you sir were lying on your couch at your home

busy tweeting. And today, you feel that you are entitled to our support as you seek to fight the Electoral Commission of Zambia on very flimsy matters? Well, you sir can go to hell,” Mr Tembo said. But Ms Imboela said the NDC had its ideologies which it stood for and it had made clear that it was just a partner and not to support UPND ideologies. In an interview, Ms Imboela said the two parties had not discussed at any time that NDC leader Mr Kambwili was to be adopted as 2021 running mate for Mr Hichilema. She said Mr Tembo was misplaced and should know that partnership did not mean that Mr Kambwili should become UPND 2021 running mate. The national spokesperson said, “In this partnership NDC has it demands and UPND has its demands and all must be respected. “So far we don’t have any problem with our partnership with the UPND. We have worked well unlike what Mr Tembo is talking about,” she said.

‘FORFEIT ILLICITLY ACQUIRED ASSETS’ By SILUMESI MALUMO

Chief Chikwanda

Chikwanda counsels Hamusonde By PETER SICHALI

CHIEF Hamusonde's claims that President Edgar Lungu and the ECZ are stealing people's votes are irresponsible and should be condemned by all peace loving Zambians, Chief Chikwanda of Mpika district has said. Chief Chikwanda said the continued smear campaign against the ECZ are unfortunate and should not be tolerated. Chief Chikwanda said the invalidation of old voter's register does not amount to rigging of 2021 general elections. He said the continued attacks against the ECZ has potential to put peace and security of the country at risk. The Traditional leader said there was nothing illegal with invalidation of the old voter's register and the online preregistration does not amount to stealing of votes for 2021. Chief Chikwanda said ECZ is an autonomous body that should be allowed to operate independent. "The unnecessary attacks against the Electoral Commission of Zambia are a recipe for chaos and therefore should be condemned," he said. Chief Chikwanda said it was the responsibility of all Zambians to safeguard the peace the country has been enjoying. He said Chief Hamusonde as a traditional should be in the forefront of preaching peace as opposed to issuing statements that have potential to put the country on fire. Traditional leaders should be in the forefront of preaching peace therefore statements that are detrimental to the peace and security of the nation should be avoided," Chief Chikwanda said.

K250,000 heist suspected mastermind faces judgement By MULENGA MUSONDA The Choma Magistrates Court has set date of judgment for a man accused of being the mastermind of the K250,000 heist. In this matter, Yona Mabala 38, a businessman, McCloud Milimo 38 a Driver, Mike Zulu a Taxi Driver, Martin Chembe Tembo 45 a Carpenter, Bright Makasa 46 a Bus Driver all of Lusaka, Brian Phiri 39 a Bricklayer of Ndola and Modern Maambo 34 a Taxi Driver of Chisekesi and Davie Banda stood charged with breaking into a Building and Committing a Felony therein. Particulars of the offence are that the eight jointly and whilst acting together broke into the Office of Ludy Investments with intent to commit a felony and stole therein K247,940 Cash, a Safe and a Central Processing Unit all valued at

K 376,440 the property of the named Ludy Investments. The heist happened between 1st and 2nd June 2020 in Choma district of Southern Province. When the eight appeared for plea before Court earlier, they all admitted to breaking into the Office and getting away with the cash and other items except for Maambo and Banda (alleged Mastermind) who strongly denied the charge. The six were earlier sentenced to five years each with hard labour and trial for the other two commenced before Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri after it was reallocated. When the two appeared for continued defense, Mabala defended his friends by stating that they knew nothing about Heist and that Maambo was just used as a driver and paid K2,000 for his service. Mabala in cross examination by Public Prosecutors Catherine Sakala and Charles Chinzai vehemently denied ever telling the Police that Banda was the mastermind of the Heist. The matter will come up on October 16 for Judgment.

ALL institutions and national assets which were unjustly acquired during the privatisation in 1990s should be forfeited back to the state, Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has said. YALI president, Andrew Ntewewe, said during the probe into the privatisation there was need to identify institutions and national assets which were acquired dubiously to be forfeited without fail. Mr Ntewewe said these can be done like the way Zamtel which became Lap Green but it was later reversed and repossessed by the state and turned into a national asset. He said during a media briefing yesterday, “And now we are here again faced with institutions and assets which if found to have been unjustly acquired need to be forfeited back to the state just as Lap Green was repossessed. “Indeed the issue of coming up with a commission of inquiry was to conduct

Mr Ntewewe

a postmortem and learn from it and the purpose of doing things in the right manner if we shall have any occurrence of

privatisation again,” he said. Mr Ntewewe said all the institutions and assets which were stolen by acquiring them in dubious ways belonged to Zambians and needed to be given back to them. “For us as YALI we are championing the commission of inquiry for the interest of Zambians so that the stolen assets be given back to them,” Mr Ntewewe said. He also said some named church mother bodies and the civil society want to gang up in order to discredit the issue of coming up with a commission of inquiry. He questioned their motive to do that and which people were they protecting by trying to discredit the entire process. “Whose interest are you trying to discredit this work? We have impeccable information some church groupings and civil society organisations are ganging up trying to discredit the process. So who are those insulting us behind the issue of instituting the commission of inquiry, speaking for,” Mr Ntewewe said.

‘Attack on ECZ recipe for anarchy’ ZRA warns By PETER SICHALI OPPOSITION’S smear campaign against the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is a recipe for chaos as the country heads for general elections next year, Inter Africa Governance Network Executive Director Maurice Malambo has said. Mr Malambo said a smear campaign against a governance Institutions was an assault to democracy and a clear indication that the opposition has no regard for the constitution. Mr Malambo said the smear campaign against ECZ was as result of failed attempts by opposition and its imperial master to capture the institution like they had done in other public Institutions such as the ACC and DEC. “Having failed to capture the Electoral Commission of Zambia there is now an attempt to smear the commission with incompetence and accusation of failure to execute its mandate,” Mr

Malambo said. He said the ECZ had not been making unilateral decisions but was doing so in consultation with stakeholders such as political parties. Mr Malambo said decision such as nullification of old voters’ register was supported by law and basic reasoning. “The Electoral process Act clearly mandates ECZ to carry out continuous voter registration and validation of the voter’s register,” Mr Malambo. He said it was the responsibility of the ECZ to ensure that elections were conducted under a valid voters’ register. He said there was need for all well-meaning Zambians to come on board and defend the ECZ against agents of the imperialists. Mr Malambo said it unfortunate that the opposition was now extending politics to ECZ, an institutions mandated by law to conduct elections.

Mr Mumba (right) touring the road works on the Mokambo road

Mokambo road needs toll gate - MP By Rogers Kalero

Government must consider putting up a toll gate on the Mokambo road which was being constructed by China Geo Engineering Corporation and financed by national Pensions Scheme Authority (NAPSA). Kantanshi member of parliament Anthony mumba made the proposal when he toured the road rehabilitation works which he described as impressive. Mr Mumba, in whose constituency the road is located, said government should consider putting up toll gates on the road which once competed would connect Copperbelt to Northern province

through Luwingu and Kasama. He said the putting up of the toll gate on the road would help plough back the funds which NAPSA would use to rehabilitate it “I Am impressed with the road rehabilitation works on Mokambo road and I can say China Geo Engineering Corporation is doing a good job. Mr Mumba also said once completed the road would also help to support agriculture in Murundu and Minambe areas which were great agricultural areas of Kantanshi and Mufulira in general. He said the agricultural produce of farmers in Minambe and Murundu will have easy access to the market once the road rehabilitation was

completed. He said he was grateful to President Edgar Lungu and the Patriotic Front government for ensuring that the road rehabilitation was revived despite facing challenges in the initial project. “This road is critical to the farmers in this area and also to other business sectors. This road once completed will present a lot of business opportunities to farmers and other people,” he said. And one of the farmers in the area, Bwalya Martin Musonda said he was grateful to President Edgar Lungu for the project, saying previous governments like UNIP and the MMD had neglected the road, but the PF had managed to work on it.

smugglers By ANDREW MUKOMA

ZAMBIA Revenue Authority says it will not tolerate any forms of smuggling as the borders in the regions open The Authority says that concealing or smuggling of any product is a crime in Zambia. Commissioner Customs Sydney Chibbabbuka said that the seizures of smuggled and concealed products which the institution has been doing is part of the stepped up efforts by the authority to curb the vice. Commissioner Chibbabbuka was speaking during the donation of 259 cases of 2 litres of cooking oil worth K200, 000 to 14 institutions in Southern Province at the Livingstone Port Office. The donated cooking oil was smuggling into the Country through Kazungula Border. “I am warning importers to desist from the practice of smuggling and other forms of tax evasion that deny revenue to the government,” he said. “ZRA will seize and forfeit any goods which have not been fully declared to the state,” Mr Chibbabbuka said. He called on stakeholders to support the institution. And speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Livingstone Central Hospital Senior Superintendent Dr Kachimba said that it was unfortunate that institutions are benefiting from what wrong doers are doing. Dr Kachimba, however expressed gratitude to ZRA for the gesture. Among the benefiting institutions are Livingstone Central Hospital, Zimba Mission Hospital, Maamba Hospital, Choma General Hospital, Monze General Hospital, Maramba Old People’s Home and SOS Children’s Home. Others are Mukusa Minor Seminary, Kwatu Children’s Home, Lushomo Trust Kazungula, Lubasi Orphanage, Ebenezer Orphanage, Youth Community Centre and Namwiyanga Mission.

MAN ‘WINS’ MARRIED WOMAN By MULENGA MUSONDA

A MAN dragged to court for allegedly marrying a married woman will have her all to himself after the Court ruled in his favour. In this matter Hastings Hambulo 43, sued Alick Munsaka, 60, in the Choma Subordinates Court claiming K20, 000 in compensation from him for committing adultery with his wife from whom he had been on separation with for more than four years. According to facts on record, the plaintiff testified that he married Josephine Chimbwete in 2001 through customary marriage and the two have been blessed with four children.

He said in 2014 the two separated, but in 2016 when he tried to mend the marriage his in laws told him that the matter should be taken to Court. He testified that the following year he was accused of impregnating his daughter. “It was during my Court appearances in 2018 for Incest that I learnt of my wife’s marriage to Munsaka and he himself confirmed it to me,” he said. Hambulo stated that he sued and Munsaka was ordered to compensate him with K7,500 plus costs but the order was later overturned. “I was advised to sue my in-laws for giving away my wife into marriage,” he said. But in defense, Munsaka insisted that his marriage to Chimbwete was lawful

When the matter came up for judgement before court, Senior Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo dismissed the appeal after establishing that the defendant married Josephine innocently without knowledge that she was still married to Hambulo. The Court stated that Hambulo should have sued his Wife’s parents for receiving Lobola if at all she was still married to him.

Stop insulting Lusaka Province youth chairman general Daniel Kalembe

Dear editor,

ABOUT POLITICAL BLACKMAIL BY HH: A CASE OF DEFACTO ALLIANCES Dear editor, There is this narrative which UPND President Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his followers have been advancing; that every other opposition political must agree with them and work in concert with them, failure to which such a political party is a surrogate of the ruling Patriotic Front political party. I want to categorically state that we do not agree with such a narrative as it constitutes political blackmail by seeking to create a defacto alliance in favour of the UPND. Mr Hichilema further postulates that all opposition political parties must unite in order to remove a ruling party and that it is irresponsible and unpatriotic for us in the Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) to seek our own identity by standing on our own. But the question that l wish to pose to Mr Hichilema is; did he, together with his UPND unite with PF in 2011 to kick out the MMD Government of the day? Or did Mr Hichilema and his UPND advance their own agenda in 2011 in the same way that PeP is seeking to advance its own agenda in 2021? 2. As Patriots for Economic Progress, we are not averse to political alliances. In fact, we strongly believe in the need for political alliances as a vehicle for growth of our party as well as for the ultimate benefit of the Zambian people. However, any alliance must be mutually beneficial to all parties. An alliance should not just benefit one political party. Each party should make some sacrifices, which constitutes an investment into the alliance, in order to make an alliance work. When we joined the Opposition Alliance with 13 other political parties about 2 years ago, those were our expectations. At that time, we were willing to make certain critical sacrifices such as forfeiting to stand as a presidential candidate in 2021 so as to rally behind Mr Hichilema’s candidature, and also work hard to push the Opposition Alliance agenda in the public domain as well as help mobilize financial resources for the Opposition Alliance project. I was both the Chairman of the Media Affairs Committee as well as the Chairman of the Finance Committee for the Opposition Alliance and l worked tirelessly in both roles. As

Chairman of the Finance Committee and within a period of a week, l was instrumental in organizing the Opposition Alliance end of year Fundraising Dinner at Intercontinental Hotel in December 2018, at which we raised more than K1 million for the Alliance. As Chairman of the Media Affairs Committee, l was instrumental in gallivanting from one Media house to another to advance the Opposition Alliance, all at the expense of the PeP agenda. Anyone who understands politics will tell you that Media and Finance are the backbone of any successful political movement. And l handled both of these critical roles with impeccable diligence and competence. But after investing all this effort and sacrifices, Mr Hichilema was not willing to allocate some constituencies and wards for PeP to solely contest in in 2021, as part of the Opposition Alliance package. He point blankly told us that since UPND is more popular than PeP, the best he can offer is for our candidates to contest on the UPND ticket! To us, this amounted to dissolving our party and joining the UPND, which was contrary to our understanding and expectation from the Opposition Alliance. So l told Mr Hichilema that l will be withdrawing my party from his Alliance, and so we left. 3. However, it is evident that Mr Hichilema expected myself and PeP to continue advancing the UPND agenda even though PeP was no longer in an alliance with his party. Our view is that in the absence of a political alliance, there is no compulsion by any party to advance another party’s interests. The concept that the opposition must, by default, unite to kick out a ruling party is inherently flawed and is not shared by even Mr Hakainde Hichilema himself, because he clearly did not unite with PF in 2011 to kick out the then MMD Government. To the contrary, Mr Hichilema walked away from the PF-UPND pact. Sata and his PF solely beat MMD and kicked them out of office. But since today it benefits Mr Hichilema, he wants to advance a narrative that PeP has a duty and responsibility to help him kick out PF and

that if we do not do that, then we are surrogates of PF. And yet, he is not willing to sacrifice a single constituency or ward in return for our support.

4. My view is that Mr Hichilema is a politically weak guy and he knows it deep down his heart that he does not possess the mental strength and prowess necessary to kick out a shrewd and brutal ruling party like PF. He knows that he needs the support of people like myself. But Mr Hichilema is not just a weak guy, he is also a selfish guy. He is not willing to give away even a single constituency or ward in return for the support of people like myself. He wants it all to himself. He wants us to rally behind him for free and escort him to State House. Even politically naive people like embattled Chishimba Kambwili who think that Mr Hichilema will make him his running mate will soon bite the dust. Now, these two attributes of being politically weak and yet selfish puts Mr Hichilema in a catch 22 situation. For his political career to succeed and for him to enter State House, Mr Hichilema will need the support and assistance of strong political players. However, those strong political players will be unlikely to offer their support pro bono. They will want some form of power sharing of sorts, which Mr Hichilema, by virtue of his inherent selfishness will be unable to grant. Just like he was unwilling to allow any alliance member to contest even a single seat in 2021, and wanted everyone to be under the umbrella of his faltering UPND party. 5. But being politically weak and selfish and not the only handicap for Mr Hichilema. He also has an inflated sense of being smart. He falsely believes that he can outwit his political allies. But his attempts to outwit his political allies are so shallow that they usually border on crookedness. For example, in 2016, Mr Hichilema allegedly entered into an alliance with three other political parties. The leaders of these three political parties were allegedly requested not to file as presidential candidates and in return, Mr Hichilema and his UPND would support

the candidature of their MPs in selected constituencies. For sure, these three political leaders kept their end of the bargain and did not file as presidential candidates. They in fact are said to have gone on the presidential campaign trail with Mr Hichilema. However, when time came for Mr Hichilema to keep his end of the bargain, he decided to allow his party to file candidates in all constituencies including those he had allegedly promised to reserve for his allies. His then allies told me that Mr Hichilema’s excuse was that he had been overruled by his party, the UPND and that there was nothing he could do about it. In my view, such alleged conduct on the part of Mr Hichilema does not amount to outsmarting his political allies, but amounts to being crooked.

6. And today, despite being politically weak and yet selfish and crooked, Mr Hichilema feels that he is entitled to Sean Tembo’s political support. How dare you sir! Just like Sata and his then PF fought and beat MMD, you sir need to fight and beat PF by yourself. We at PeP shall also seek to fight and beat PF by ourselves. It is each man for himself and God for us all. In fact, you sir and your UPND have never supported us in any way, shape or form in our fight against the PF. We have challenged the PF and it’s Government in four cases in court (all of which we won by the way) and you sir never allocated us any of your lawyers among your large army of lawyers, and neither did you contribute a single Ngwee for our legal fees. We undertook 13 successful protests against the $42 million fire tender scandal and you sir never sent a single one of your UPND members to come and give us solidarity. While we were being attacked by Paul Moonga and his thugs along Cairo Road, you sir were lying on your couch at your home busy tweeting. And today, you feel that you are entitled to our support as you seek to fight the Electoral Commission of Zambia on very flimsy matters? Well, you sir can go to hell. Sean Tembo - PeP President

General DANIEL KALEMBE has proved to be the best ever Patriotic Front Party Lusaka Province YOUTH CHAIRMAN with excellent leadership qualities that has given youths of Lusaka Province the freedom to contribute without any intimidation, furthermore he his the first Provincial Youth Chairman in the history of PF to organize a seminar for our Youth structures in Lusaka Province to orient them about youth leadership. General Kalembe has also shown and proved his desire to reconcile and unite the YOUTHS in Lusaka Province so that we all work together in the best interest of the PARTY PF and President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. General DANIEL KALEMBE is well known by many for his quiet persona, humbleness and calmness even in situations that may lead to extreme provocation. However lately I have observed people taking advantage of his humbleness and calmness to the extent of openly insulting him in Public. Yesterday’s audios were a certain misguided Political novice was heard insulting our very own Lusaka Province YOUTH CHAIRMAN GENERAL DANIEL KALEMBE to the extent of saying he will sexually engage Mr. KALEMBE in prison once locked up together has surely forced me to react because such sentiments are unZambian. Let me firmly warn the person behind those voice notes that General Kalembe is our current Provincial Youth Chairman with a huge following which will not just seat and watch our leader being insulted in such a manner. Freedom of expression and speech can be guaranteed, however the freedom after that speech or expression can never be guaranteed depending on how you used it. You can not be accusing our Provincial Youth Chairman to be a murderer and yet claim to be PF. I wish to advise the person behind those voice notes to retract and apologize to avoid unnecessary conflicts and divisions in our party. Let me also confidently warn those in a habit of insulting General Kalembe that we are very much capable of rounding you up all of you once a directive is given. Lately it looks like our quietness and humbleness has been misunderstood of being cowards. We accept positive criticism but not insulting and bringing out unfounded allegations meant to destroy our Provincial Youth Chairman’s reputation. MAXWELL CHONGU PF DIE HARD

...as South Africa name squad to face Chipolopolo

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

Z

AMBIA National Soccer team coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic could be poached as he is deemed as one of the potential coaches to succeed Pitso Mosimane at Mamelodi Sundowns FC. Goal.com reports that Micho understands South African football and its players and he could be tempted to replace Mosimane if given the chance by the club's president. However Micho would have to resign as Chipolopolo coach just like Mosimane to get the job at Sundowns or Sundowns would be compelled to compensate the Football Association of Zambia for the Serbian

to switch camp. Micho enjoyed a two-year stint with Orlando Pirates before quitting the job to join Egyptian giants Zamalek in August 2019. He was fired by Zamalek a few months into his contract, before FAZ gave him a two year deal with a monthly package of US$25000 as a Chipolopolo tutor. Micho would have to beat competition from Jose Ramon Alexanko the former Barcelona player who is the current Sundowns technical Director and Manqoba Mngqithi who has been with the Sundowns for six years as Mosimane's assistant. Others are Benni McCarthy who is currently unattached to

any team since leaving Cape Town City last year. Former Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol who left South Africa unceremoniously in 2011 after he wasn't given a contract extension by Pirates despite guiding them to a domestic treble is also among the potential candidates to replace Mosimane who resigned to join 'top Egyptian club', Al Ahly. Meanwhile South Africa National soccer team coach Molefi Ntseki has named a 25 member squad for Bafana Bafana's international friendlies against Namibia and Zambia to be played in Rustenburg later this month. The Chipolopolo boys will face South Africa on October

ZA sets date for Elective AGM By MUKWIMA CHILALA

THE Zambia Athletic (ZA) has set December 19 as the date for its highly anticipated elective Annual General meeting (AGM) to be held in Lusaka. In a notice circulated to members, ZA General Secretary Davison Mungabata says the decision was arrived at in line with article 10.6 (g) of the ZA constitution. Mungambata said that article 10.6 says that the term of office shall be four (4) years and the elections shall be held every four (4) years at the Annual General Meeting in the last quarter of the year or the first quarter not later than 31 March and no official shall hold two offices/posts. He notes that the Zambia Athletics therefore was informing all affiliated clubs and Provincial Area Boards in good standing,

Mungambata

“The agenda according to article 6.3 are Credentials, Previous Minutes and Matters Arising, The President’s Annual Report, Annual Audited Accounts,”

“The elective annual general meeting, as planned in in the 2020 calendar of activities, will be held on December 19, 2020 in Lusaka. "The agenda according to article 6.3 are Credentials, Previous Minutes and Matters Arising, The President’s Annual Report, Annual Audited Accounts,” Mungambata said. He said submission of the budget for the following year will also be considered at the AGM which will consider

amendments to the ZA constitution regulations and rules when applicable. "Also to be discussed is the determination of the schedule of fees of ensuing year, the appointment of Bankers and Auditors. And Mungambata said that a suitable venue that will meet the Covid-19 National Guidelines will be announced later. He notes that should they encounter any problem in the preparation of the elections, the ZA Executive will consult the affiliates on the possibilities of having election next year according to article 10.6(g) of the constitution. Incumbent president Elias Mpondela is seeking re-election while Olympian Jonathan Chipalo and former World 400 meters hurdles champion Samuel Matete are set to challenge Mpondela should they meet the requirements.

11 in the second of three international friendly matches that will see Zambia host Malawi on October 7 at National Heroes Stadium before travelling to Nairobi to face Kenya on October 13th.

Mourinho says no revenge mission ahead of Man Utd trip JOSE Mourinho brushed aside suggestions that he would be on a revenge mission when he takes his Tottenham side to Manchester United on Sunday. One of his first matches in charge of Spurs was a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford last December, but the Portuguese said he had no "bad feelings" towards his former club. "What's that? Revenge? I won so many times at Old Trafford as Man United coach and as an opponent coach," he said at his pre-match press conference. "Revenge for what? Nobody treated me badly there, everyone was so nice to me, I don't have enemies there, I don't have bad feelings. Revenge for what? It's just a football match

I want to win." Mourinho said his Tottenham side would have "no excuses" against United in their fourth game in eight days, after booking their place in the Europa League group stages on Thursday. The Spurs boss, sacked by United nearly two years ago, has previously complained about player welfare and said their efforts have been "inhuman" but he is gearing his side up for one last push before the international break. - SUPERSPORT

JESUS ARRESTED IN RUSSIA

S

TOLEN in Malawi, arrested in Russia for organising an illegal religious bloc. He has been arrested together with ‘His Simon Peter’.

Sergei Torop who declared himself as Jesus has been arrested in Russia following a special operation in Siberia where the self-proclaimed Son of God was targeted like a dangerous thief or criminal by officers armed to the teeth. Media reports indicate the Russian Jesus is a former traffic police officer – not as a carpenter as it were in the biblical times, a profession He might have chosen to suit modern times. He did not say why he set-

tled for profession before he setting a cut in Siberia that he has run for the past 3 decades. “Helicopters and heavily armed officers stormed communities run by Sergei

Torop, known to his followers as Vissarion, and arrested him and two of his aides” reports the Guardian newspaper in the UK. The paper says His charges include “organising an illegal

religious organisation” called the Church of the Last Testament that he founded in 1991 following his “awakening”. He, however, denied being God. “I am not God. And it is a mistake to see Jesus as God. But I am the living Word of God the Father. Everything that God wants to say, He says through Me” he told the paper in 2002. The investigative team also says the cult “extorted money from followers” who were also subjected to “emotional abuse”. Torop who is 59 years old has been arrested together

Woman exchanges wedding vows with dead man THE vow “until death do us apart” does not exist in her vocabulary. Jessica Padgett, a woman in the US decided to exchange wedding vows with her dead groom at his grave. The groom, Kendall Murphy (27), was tragically killed in a car accident nine months before the wedding. Kendall was a volunteer firefighter from Montgomery, Indiana and had responded to a crash on a rural road. His colleague, Colby Blake (26) was driving another fire engine and responding to the same emergency. Just as Kendall was reaching in to his vehicle to get his protective clothing, he

was hit by the fire engine Blake was driving and killed. “I wanted to still celebrate

our wedding day, even though he wasn’t physically there with me. I wanted

memories of the day that we were supposed to have in my dress,” Jessica, 25, told the BBC. But she decided not to cancel the big day. Instead, on 29 September, Jessica put on the white dress she’d chosen for their wedding and she gathered family and friends. Having the wedding day is part of the healing process for Jessica and her family, she says. The photographer the couple had originally booked for their wedding took the pictures and immediately went viral when they were posted on Facebook by the photographer. - Malawi24.com

UNHOLY COMMUNION: Pastor and wife tangle in church

A 43-YEAR-OLD man is demanding back his lobola after discovering that his

40 year old wife has been sleeping with a pastor “before and after each Sunday

service”. The man, identified as Lucas Jobe, says his wife would go to church early in order to sleep with the pastor before each service. She would then stay behind for another “round of special prayers”. The affair, reports the Daily Sun, has remained a secret for over eight months. It only became public after another member of the church decided to snitch. Jobe who hails from Gauteng in South Africa says he could not believe his ears when story of the affair between his wife and a pastor at his church was laid naked before him. “I didn’t believe the story.

I confronted my wife and she denied it at first, but she confessed after a long argument” Jobe told Daily Sun. Lucas wondered how the pastor could preach knowing what he had done. “I wonder how it felt for my wife to sing and read the holy book knowing what she’d done before church. They’re evil.” But Jobe’s ex-wife says she only cheated because her ex-husband was unavailable unlike the pastor who “listened to my problems and gave me good advice”. She, however, pleaded for “a second chance” saying she is very sorry for her entanglement with the pastor.

with his right hand man, Vadim Redkip who served in the same role like the biblical Simon Peter. Vladimir Vedernikov, another of his disciples, was also arrested. Followers of the Russian Jesus celebrate Christmas on 14 January, the day of Vissarion’s birth. It is currently not clear whether this Jesus will be executed – on the cross or tbrough an electric chair – by the Russian authorities if found guilty. Meanwhile, the thieves who stole Jesus in Malawi are yet to be arrested. The Jesus, stolen at a Catholic Church in Balaka district, has not been recovered. - Malawi24.com

According to reports published by one of the local radios on its Facebook, a baby born last night asked his mother to prepare him prepare so he could eat leaving villagers in shock. “TA Makanjira whose area boarders the Mozambique place where this is alleged to have happened says he also instructed his subjects to abide by the instructions” said ZBS on its post. According to the report by the media house, the baby died hours later. - Malawi24. com

Man, 41, loses ‘unprecedented’ legal bid for parents’ financial support A 41-YEAR-OLD man has failed in a legal bid to force his wealthy parents to continue financially supporting him.

A qualified solicitor with mental health disabilities, the man said his parents “nurtured his dependency” on them but reduced support as his relationship with them deteriorated. His lawyers said the judge had powers to order parents to provide support based on laws relating to marriage and children. But the judge ruled he had “no case”. Sir James Mumby said in a ruling following a remote family court hearing that the claim was “most unusual” and as far as he knew “unprecedented” . Neither of the parties were named, but the judge said the man lived in London and his parents in Dubai. Although the man has a degree in modern history, is a qualified solicitor and has a master’s degree in taxation, Sir James said he has “various difficulties and mental health disabilities” and has been unemployed since 2011. His parents have supported him, allowing him to live in a flat in central London that they own, and until recently paying the utility bills. But the judge said: “The relationship between the applicant and his parents, in particular, it would appear, his father, has deteriorated and the financial support they are prepared to offer has significantly reduced.” The man’s lawyer, Tim Amos, said his parents are “very wealthy” and could comfortably pay any support the court might reasonably order. Mr Amos characterised the parents as having “nurtured his dependency on them for the last 20 years or so” and now “seek to cast that dependency onto the state”. Lawyers for the parents disputed this account. Sir James dismissed the case on legal grounds, saying the court had no jurisdiction to grant his claims under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, the Children Act 1989, or under human rights law. The man’s lawyer had argued that the provisions in these laws allowing the court to order payments to support young children could also apply to adult children – if they were undergoing education and training, or if they had special circumstances such as a disability. But the judge pointed out that these provisions only applied when a court order for financial support has already been made when the child is young, and when the parents are not living with each other – which was not the case for this man. He said the law was clear that an adult child “should not be able to take his parents to court to obtain finance”. The judge refused permission to appeal. - NEHANDA RADIO

MONGST the tribulations and challenges of this year, we weren’t even sure that the Fuchs Elephant Charge 2020 would take place. Darkest of depressions for the Elephant Charge committee who have looked forward to the annual event since 2008. Could it be that this year would be cancelled?

Luckily the COVID pandemic in Zambia has started to ease off over the past few months and our movement and gathering restrictions lifted to the point that a socially distanced Elephant Charge looked like it might be possible. The Elephant Charge were keen to go ahead in any workable way, adhering to all protocols, most importantly to continue to support our conservation beneficiaries in Zambia, such as the “Chongololo” Conservation School Clubs. Many of the projects that the Elephant Charge supports rely on significant funding from the tourism industry whose income has reduced immensely. So somewhere in mid-August 2020 the final decision to put our foot on the pedal was made. This year’s offroad 4x4 challenge event was met with huge enthusiasm from teams. Although we did have a few less vehicles than 2019 understandably, the 2020 event saw 23 teams enter from all over Zambia. The course set by the committee this year was in the valley of the Kawanga River, off Chifwema Road approximately two hours from Lusaka. With sandy hills, rocky riverbeds and precipitous ravines as obstacles the teams set off at 7am from their first checkpoint hoping that they would see it again before 3pm in order to complete the course in time. We have initially started with George Compound where we occasionally distribute mealie-meal, cooking oil, salt, chickens, meat and other food stuffs to vulnerable people. Our plan is to eventually spread out this service to other compounds in the capital city where access to food is a very big challenge to most households. My target group are persons 70 years and above because such people are usually neglected by society and have no siblings to care for them as they are either dead or just don’t care at all. You will find that a 70 year-old woman has several grand children left her dead children to look after. The unemployed woman has to struggle to find food, clothes and school requirements for them. That’s where the food support to such households become handy. How do you manage to find the foodstuffs to donate to the vulnerable? Finding foodstuffs has indeed been a challenge but over time, a number of people and organisations have come on board to support me every once in a while and made the work easier. Intact, when I started the project, I was not sure that I would manage the task because it seemed a very difficult undertaking. However, I was able to find my way through as God had a hand in it. People always say, “wherever there is a will, there is a way.” Various people and organisations have come to my assistance

with donations of foodstuffs, at my very time of need. Others have always requested to be my permanent partners in this charity project after I explained my passion and plans to them. For instance, the Muslim Community in Zambia has been giving me beef and food bumpers durung Ramadan to donate to the poor. How much support do you receive from your family in your work? I am lucky to a very supportive husband who encourages me all the way. My children are equally supportive of my project. What makes you really happy in life? I become very happy when I put a smile on a hopeless person’ s face and they begin to praise God as a result of the help given to

them. This is because such people have either received something they did not expect or have eaten food they thought they could ever afford. I get so much encouraged and motivated to help more people when I see people start praising God as a result of my works.
