CAUTION IS KEY THERE is a danger that as countries ease restrictions in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic, caution might be thrown to the wind. Countries around the world have been in virtual global lockdown regarding travel. This has resulted in airline companies grounding their fleets. Another sector that has suffered heavily has been the hospitality industry with hotels closing their doors and millions of workers losing their jobs. However, for land-linked Zambia, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought its own problems, notably cross-border trade and the general movement of goods in and out of the country. Thankfully for Zambia, Government from the onset has been pro-active in protecting citizens from infections that could have been brought from outside travelers. And yesterday, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Dr Kennedy Malama assured that Government would not relax in its efforts to enforce strict compliance to the health guidelines. Government must be commended for this approach because even as Zambia and her neighbours lift certain restrictions, people might think it is okay to resort to the old ways of doing things – unhindered travel. But we are glad that Government has assured that it won’t be leaving anything to chance but was working tirelessly to enhance surveillance and ensure that adherence to guidelines agreed by SADC are achieved. We are particularly concerned about the border areas with Tanzania where our northern neighbour refused to introduce any effective preventive measures, arguing that Covid-19 did not exist. We recall that even when Nakonde was placed under total lockdown early this year, the other side of the border had nothing of that, it was life as usual there. Our southern neighbours however have been consistent in enforcing Covid-19 preventive measures and do not pose much danger. But Dr Malama’s statement yesterday is encouraging. “We are closely working with our colleagues in Tanzania and our teams in Muchinga Province so that we enhance surveillance and ensure adherence to guidelines which SADC agreed upon.” Dr Malama said SADC agreed that all individuals entering any country must have two Covid-19 negative certificates. He said: “We know that cross border route continue to be a risk so we agreed as SADC region when someone is coming into Zambia, they must come with two Covid-19 certificates. We appeal to Zambians travelling within the region not to let their guard down but cooperate fully with the health authorities. This is especially so for those who travel to South Africa on business. Although South Africa has eased restrictions, including travel, it is important that people abide by the health guidelines as it was one of the worst affected countries. President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africa will move to Alert Level 1 of the lockdown at midnight today. This will see larger gatherings being permitted, along with international travel. This is the core reason why Government must be commended for assuring the nation that now is not the time to relax. Caution must continue to be the catchword.

SERVING WITH INTEGRITY

THE RETURN OF FDD LEADER EDITH NAWAKWI By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE THE political epitaph of FDD president Edith Nawakwi, Zambia’s only female presidential contender, began to be written four years ago. This started after her third attempt to become Zambia’s first female president floundered at the polls in which she was a gender-based favourite. Ms Nawakwi lost to the more fancied Edgar Lungu and some of her aides were contemplating her political retirement, with her star fading fast in Zambia’s political galaxy – but not anymore. Are Zambians blind/deaf to the patently obvious? Amazingly, a number of events conspired to give Ms Nawakwi a muchneeded political lifeline. Key among them was UPND president Hakainde Hichilema’s failure to declare interest during the 1990s privatisation process of Intercontinental Hotel in Livingstone, which saw him benefitting personally when he was engaged to serve the interests of the government. Ms Nawakwi did not rise to the centre of Zambia’s politics by sheer dint of luck but by playing bare-knuckled politics informed by an ability to sniff at opportunities and pounce on them when the prospect arose. The UPND leader is under fire, nay unending bombardment, in the political arena for his ill-fated decision to sell the hotel to a lower bidder, Sun International Zambia Limited which was a subsidiary of Sun International South Africa. Predictably, things have turned out rather ugly for Mr Hichilema. Others long cautioned him against the headlong rush into the sale of Livingstone’s Intercontinental Hotel to a bidding company in which he had vested interests. The synopsis of the timeline of Ms Nawakwi’s allegations that were made against him regarding the sale of the hotel, which he’s consistently failed to refute were that he was appointed as Zambia Privatisation Agency (ZPA) negotiating chairman for the sale of the hotel around July 1997 and that while he was ZPA negotiating chairman, he incorporated Sun International Zambia Limited on November 18, 1997 and in March 1998, he sold the hotel to a company that he had incorporated and in which he was a director. Now the ugly aftermath of the sale

of Livingstone’s Intercontinental Hotel is threatening Mr Hichilema’s political survival. He wants to focus on graftfree socio-economic issues as 2021 elections draw closer. But the folly of conflict of interests in the sale of the hotel in Livingstone keeps making the headlines. The UPND leader has fudged, ducked and dived, but no, the story about his nefarious and venal behaviour just won’t go away. Indeed, the recent events showcased Ms Nawakwi’s political savvy and the ability to cash in her chips at the opportune moment. This skill has revived the woman and thrust her back into the national limelight of the country’s politics. As expected, Ms Nawakwi is using every response from the UPND leadership as an opportunity to repackage herself as the alternative unblemished opposition leaderin-waiting. While inaction seems to be dogging the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Ms Nawakwi is openly using ACC’s missteps to reboot her political profile which four years ago had all but vanished. Besides, Zambia’s next general election has been fixed for August 2021. It will elect the seventh president of the country, and probably see a change of guard at State House in terms of ideology. Mr Hichilema, the man widely tipped by his Facebook/WhatsApp/ Twitter-based supporters and UPNDcompromised civil society to become the seventh president, is having a particularly rough time. Ms Nawakwi’s allegations of impropriety that were levelled against him regarding the sale of the hotel in Livingstone have added to his woes. Undeniably, President Lungu’s recontesting in next year’s election and the battle to challenge him is turning out to be a high stakes battle. Already the key contenders have seemingly hit the campaign trail, but the man the Facebook/WhatsApp/Twitter-based punters have put their money on is having a rough time. The UPND leader, self-hyped as Zambia’s most affluent opposition politician, says he will run on the agenda of fixing the ailing economy, but even before his campaign moves into full gear, all hell has broken loose. And this is thanks to Ms Nawakwi, the ex-Minister of Finance at the

time Mr Hichilema participated in the privatisation of government assets. Her tell-all disclosure of a litany of wrongdoings was clearly aimed at crippling Mr Hichilema’s campaign even before it started. The motley array of graft-related accusations left many Zambians and Mr Hichilema’s closest supporters, especially those in the Tonga-ethnic community, in shock. Ms Nawakwi painted the UPND leader, in her allegations, as unworthy of high office, and cited many examples to explain why. No wonder she caused a political storm as the accusations gave Mr Hichilema’s opponents a field day. Besides, she was seen by many as a breath of fresh air in an environment of foul odour. Mr Hichilema’s supporters, however, were furious, and mounted a counteroffensive to turn her, into an item of national scorn. That her allegations exposed Mr Hichilema’s underbelly and sapped his chances of appearing on next year’s election ballot paper is a matter of worry for the UPND. Was it why he chose the legal route to sidestep and downplay Ms Nawakwi’s serious accusations via the High Court? Yet, Ms Nawakwi was unrepentant and declared that she would not apologise to the UPND leader for calling him “a criminal who personally benefitted from the privatisation programme.” Ms Nawakwi’s raft of graft allegations, if it stands the Hichilema court challenge, her anti-graft strong sense of déjà vu might have compelled her. And this appears to be what exactly might happen, judging from her unwavering self-confidence and experience in a similar court challenge of 2001, when she was charged in the “Chiluba thief” case. Zambia police released the outspoken FDD politician after charging her with defaming Dr Chiluba. The defamation charge carried a maximum jail term of three years. But Ms Nawakwi was undeterred and told reporters just before turning herself in to the police: “I am ready to go to jail over this because I have evidence to prove my allegations.” Thus, her return in the limelight begs the question: Did she hitherto privatisation preside over Zambia’s treasury without a whiff of corruption?

Tongas sue HH CHICKENS OUT OF ZNBC They are also demanding that the British Government and the World Bank should fund the repatriation of the affected people to Zambia, saying this will enable the victims regain their dignity and status. Team leader for the group, Moses Haaketa said the case regards the forceful removal of the valley people from their ancestral land to resettlement centers in Zimbabwe. He said the International Criminal Court in the Hague, Netherlands, has since allocated the matter with case number OTP-CR-301/19, a copy that has been given to the British High Commissioner to Zambia Nicolas Wolley, President of the World Bank, David Malpass and his Board of Directors. Mr Haaketa said the Public Protector of Zambia and the Speaker of National Assembly of Zambia Dr. Patrick Matibini have also been informed of the decision. “Acting in terms of article 18 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People’s (UNDRIP) as offshoots of the displaced people, we decided to take up a decision to fight for justice,” Mr Haaketa said. He also said the actions by the British Government and World Bank was a gross violation of United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People’s (UNDRIP), resolution 61/295 -1/2 of June 29, 2006 article 10 and ICCPR article 12 repatriation of community members back to their land. Mr Haaketa said the decision to report the matter to the International Criminal Court follows failure to get intervention from the Pan African Parliament and SADC on the plight and injustice facing the people of the valley. ‘We further wrote and engaged the former African Union, the then President Dr. Abdel Fattah el-sisi and the AU Secretary General Mr. Moussaka Faki unfortunately, we received no response from their offices,” he said.

Mr Shimunza

Own-up, foul-mouthed HH and UPND told By JOHN KOMBE THE UPND must not shield their president Hakainde Hichilema, but advise him to apologise for using vulgar language in public, says Movement for National Transformation (MNT) president Daniel Shimunza Mr. Shimunza said in an interview that defending a wrong was not the best way to respond to unwarranted vulgar language. He said the language used by Mr Hichilema in Lukashya while campaigning was unpalatable and must not be sugar coated. He said the UPND was wrong to suggest that the language used was acceptable because it was an idiom in Southern Province. “An idiom in Southern Province may not be befitting in another area and as such politicians must regulate their language according to their audience,” Mr. Shimunza said. He emphasised that

civility in politics was not negotiable and must be enhanced. Mr. Shimunza also observed that the language of both the ruling Patriotic Front and UPND was not based on ideology, but rivalry. He was quick to point out that the rivalry between the PF and UPND was very rife and was resulting in such vulgar language. He stressed that the two biggest political parties must show leadership and base their arguments on ideas. He noted that political parties must show civility in their politics to promote unity in the country. Mr. Shimunza also observed that the voting pattern in the just ended parliamentary by-elections in Mwansabombwe and Lukashya was a clear indication of what will prevail in the 2021 general elections. He said that this kind of voting must not be the trend as it had the potential of promoting regional politics.

…”I can’t be interviewed on privatisation process as matters are in Court”

From page 1 In a letter dated September 10, 2020 and signed by Secretary General Stephen Katuka, the party had demanded an appearance by Mr. Hichilema to rebut allegations raised by FDD president Edith Nawakwi and others. But on the day of the interview, the party changed its positions and made representations to ZNBC management. They said Mr Hichilema was unable to present himself to the ZNBC interview as the matters he intended to discuss were now in a court of law. The UPND team led their chairperson, Mutale Nalumango, Charles Kakoma, journalist Clayton Hamasaka and two lawyers, instead said the party should be given a choice of picking a person to represent the party. By SILUMESI MALUMO THE Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has unearthed an illegal cigarette manufacturing scam at the boundary of Kanyama and Makeni compound in Lusaka. Last night a combined team comprising ZRA, the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), Immigration Department and the police raided a place named Mango Investments Tobacco Limited for suspected conspiracy to defraud the government through illegal importation, manufacturing and distribution of cigarettes. The compliance check immediately reviewed suspected serious tax evasion, intellectual property infringement, concealments and misclassifications. ZRA Corporate Communications Manager, Topsy Sikalinda, told the Sunday Nation yesterday that during the operation, it was discovered that the company was manufacturing and packing cigarettes without affixing ZRA cigarette tax stamp. Mr Sikalinda also said it was noticed that the company also manufactured suspected counterfeit brands of cigarettes

The many matters raised by Ms Nawakwi and others, have demanded answers from Mr. Hichilema on the role he played in the privatisation process. There are strong allegations that Mr. Hichilema as consultant and evaluator, grossly profitted from the privatisation process by under-valuing state assets, selling state assets to himself and his associates, failing to declare commercial interests and failing to make disclosures in assets that he was interested in or his associates. Mr. Hichilema, as lead Consultant and Evaluator for the Zambia Privatisation Agency (ZPA) was involved in the sale of Musi-O-Tunya Intercontinental Hotel, the sale of ZCCM non-core assets such as Lunsemfwa Hydro and ZCCM Power Division (CEC) sold to five ZCCM senior executives.

As CEO and Managing Partner of Coopers and Lybrand and later Grant Thornton, Mr. Hichilema was liquidator of the agriculture bank, Lima Bank that had various assets including farms. His firm also appointed Mr Christopher Mulenga as Receiver Manager for RAMCOZ in Luanshya, a process marred in allegations of plunder and looting. ZNBC wanted to interview him on all allegations including how he acquired former state farms and his recent acquisition of a Kalomo farm that has seen farmers evicted from the land. But lawyer Mulambo Haimbe told ZNBC that Mr. Hichilema could not be interviewed on any matters related to his role in the privatisation process as this, he claimed, would be contemptuous to the court process.

ZRA snuffs out illegal smokes plant

Mr Sikalinda branded in a foreign language. He said the company was making import declaration of empty cartridges for cigarettes when in fact they were importing already manufactured

No importation of edible oils, we’ll produce our own - ZNFU By KETRA KALUNGA in Mkushi ON behalf of the farmers, we say no to the importation of edible oils, we will produce our own for this country, Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has said. ZNFU president, Jervis Zimba wondered why the country was still importing cooking oil when it produces enough soybeans, sunflower, and cotton. Mr. Zimba said now is the time that the country ensured that anything that was produced locally was not imported to grow the market to the local products. “This country can grow a lot of soybeans, we can grow a lot of sunflower, cotton then why are we importing edible oils in this country,” he said. Mr Zimba was speaking in Mkushi on Friday during the 2020 National Wheat Harvest at Chobe Agrivision Farm graced by President Edgar Lungu. And Mr. Zimba commended the Ministry of Agriculture for its earlier pronouncement that it would stop the importation of potatoes and onions because the country was producing enough. He also said ZNFU would soon engage the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to ensure that any meat products that are produced locally are not imported. “How can we be importing sausages, bacon from Spain and Italy and yet we have our own pork? We can manufacture our own, we will break the forces and any hindrances that we’ll come across,” said Mr. Zimba.

cigarettes. Mr Sikalinda said according to the Customs and Excise Duty Act Cap 322 section 108A of the laws of Zambia, manufacturers of cigarettes for the Zambian

market were required to fix cigarette stamps issued by ZRA to help in curbing smuggling and easily identified illegal products on the market. He said ZRA had intensified monitoring of all business premises working with other law enforcement agencies. He explained that the company has also been importing already manufactured but unpackaged cigarettes, as empty cartridges, which are duty free, but later repackaged at the illegal Kanyama factory. “The ZRA is also sensitising the public by going to places like markets especially COMESA market on the dangers of dealing in illegal cigarettes and how to identify them. Any cigarette pack without a ZRA stamp on it is illegal and should not be sold on the market. Such negative vices create price distortion on the market that result in tax revenue losses for the government and the people of Zambia,” Mr Sikalinda said.

We’re not leaving anything to chance – Health PS By SILUMESI MALUMO WE are not leaving anything to chance, we are working tirelessly to enhance surveillance and ensure that adherence to guidelines agreed by SADC are achieved, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Kennedy Malama has said. Dr Malama said SADC agreed that all individuals entering any country must have two Covid-19 negative certificates. He said: “We know that cross border route continue to be a risk so we agreed as SADC region when someone is coming into Zambia, they must come with two Covid-19 certificates. “We are closely working with our colleagues in Tanzania and our teams in Muchinga Province so that we enhance surveillance and ensure adherence to guidelines which SADC agreed upon. He said during the Covid-19 routine update yesterday in Lusaka, that the government shall continue taking necessary measures to ensure that it rumps up testing so that surveillance was well linked to testing. Meanwhile, Dr Malama said “Let me mention that we didn’t record any Covid-19 related death in the last 24 hours this therefore maintains the number of related deaths to 329, 110 deaths due to Covid-19, 12 Covid-19 associated deaths and seven deaths being reviewed for classification. He however said the country recorded 48 new Covid-19 cases recorded out of 1, 210 cases tested bringing the total cases to 14, 070 cases.

Re-opened schools must be clean, says Kantanshi MP By ROGERS KALERO

WHEN schools open tomorrow, they must be disinfected so that they are clean, and safe after closing for a long time due to the ravaging effects of Covid-19, Kantanshi member of Parliament Anthony Mumba has said Mr Mumba said apart from disinfecting the schools, managements at various schools in the constituency should ensure that they follow the Ministry of Healthy guidelines on how to curb the spread of Covid-19 Mr Mumba was speaking yesterday at Pamodzi Secondary School in Mufulira when he donated disinfectants to secondary schools in the constituency to prepare themselves to fight the Covid-19 as they open for classes. He said the Covid-19 has seen people losing jobs, closing businesses and incomes, but the best thing was to soldier on “This Covid-19 has hit economies worldwide but we should not succumb to it, but continue to soldier on. This is why I thought I should put you in a right mode to curb the spread of the pandemic by donating these disinfectants. “I believe that, as schools open, they should be well prepared with disinfectants and also ensure that they follow the Ministry of Health guidelines, Mr Mumba said Mr Mumba also said he had bought materials for the school’s home economics department to be producing face masks as another initiative to ensure all the pupils have masks. “I am so grateful that the school management and parents have always supported me every time I come with an initiative. It is for this reason that I have bought materials for the schools to start producing face masks,’ he said. And speaking earlier, Mufulira District Education Board Secretary Elizabeth Ng’onga said she was grateful that President Edgar Lungu had allowed the reopening of schools and managements of various schools should put everything in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Covid increasing child marriages rate - Lungu By OLIVER SAMBOKO PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has warned that social and economic hardships caused by the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) may force parents and guardians in many economically distressed countries to marry off their girls as a response and coping strategy to the pandemic. The head of state has since called for the rejuvenation of global efforts among world leaders to develop measures that would eliminate harmful practices such as child early and forced marriages by 2030. President Lungu said the Covid-19 had the potential to increase the rate of child marriages in many countries as the world continues to fight

President Lungu the pandemic. President Lungu said this through a virtual message in a statement read on his behalf by Gender Minister Elizabeth Phiri at the annual high level

75th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 75) on Child Early and Forced Marriage and the Covid-19 Pandemic side meeting. The Head of State said child

marriages had continued to deny girls their basic fundamental rights and chances to be children and be able to choose when and whom to marry, including living a life free of violence and sexual abuse. He said Child Early and Forced Marriage largely interrupted the girl child their right to school as well as robbing them of the opportunity to advance their careers and vocational training. President Lungu said the vice of Child Early and Forced Marriage ultimately denied the girl child the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the development of their communities and society as a whole.

Dear Editor, ZAMBIA has in the recent past witnessed a surge in incidences of spousal killing. The situation is worrisome. In a nutshell, spousal killing is a scenario where the husband murders the wife and vice versa owing to marital disputes. Spousal killing can also involve people in an intimate relationship. The reasons for spousal killing are many and varied. The reasons may include infidelity, petty jealous and lack of premarital counselling. The spousal killing can also be attributed to the husband's failure to provide basic needs such as food for his family. Whatever reason compounded the spousal killing, the bizarre incident is not justifiable. Why taking your spouse's life over marital conflicts? An amicable solution must be sought to avert the high incidences of spousal killing. However, there is a need for premarital counselling for the people contemplating marriage. The church leaders should be involved to conduct the premarital counselling sessions. This is important in that it empowers the would-be married couples with the necessary knowledge on how best to resolve the marriage turbulences. Communication is also an important tool that can be used to resolve the marital conflicts that might arise. When there is no communication, it becomes difficult to addressing some problems in the marriage. Every marriage has some marital conflicts. How you resolve them is what is important. Our local newspapers carry stories of spousal killings. This is not a good thing as it depicts the degradation of morals in the nation. Moving forward; there is need to address the incidences of spousal killing among couples. Marriage was not meant to be a burden. ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

In a nutshell, spousal killing is a scenario where the husband murders the wife and vice versa owing to marital disputes.

UPND POPULARITY ARTIFICIAL, STILL REGIONAL

Dear Editor,

THE recent victory of the Patriotic Front has not only strengthened its dominance over the ever losing UPND, by and large, it has significantly put the last nail on the UPND coffin in the northern block. The zeros UPND got at the notorious Kalito and Sesa polling stations has vindicated our claims that UPND only has artificial popularity in the northern region. Unlike the PF which has been accepted in Western and North-Western provinces, the support for UPND tilts in one known region. This is the definition of a regionally inclined political party. It is ostensibly correct to assume that even the accredited UPND polling agents and the people spearheading their campaigns voted for the PF candidates. The wind of continuation is blowing in the direction of the PF and President Edgar Lungu is certainly headed for a second term. The decision to vote the PF is not only the fulfillment of democratic processes, it is the renewed hope that the PF still remains the party of first choice and there is no alternative that can suitably replace it. We also note that the opposition politicised the death of the late PF MPs as they made reference to the incoherent reference to bill 10. As though that was not enough, the boiled hearts of electorates who were in the mourning mode were further provoked when UPND life president and five-time losing Presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema insulted the bemba-speaking people in their language and at home ground. This is in addition to the many unanswered

questions relating to the role that Mr Hichilema played in the privatisation process which relegated many breadwinners into disgraced destitutes. The conduct of Mr Hichilema is unheard of for the person aspiring to be elected as republican president. Indeed, such reckless actions by Mr Hichilema could only end all forms of political cooperation between Mr Hichilema and all aggrieved electorates. While they may bring disproportionate claims that by-elections are insignificant to the general elections, we would like to remind the proponents of such self-comforting claims that a university student who consistently fails the continuous assessments is destined to fail the final exams. Therefore, the examples of previously won by-elections is circumstantially distinguishable from the PF. It is rational that the Zambians emulate the people of Lukashya and Mwansabombwe constituencies especially Kalito and Sesa polling stations in Lukashya and Mwansabombwe respectively were UPND got zero votes. There is no doubt Mr Hichilema is in dire desperation for the bemba-speaking vote. It is our prayer that the UPND will not get more than 1, 000 votes in a PF stronghold and we will take this to audit our footsteps. Lastly, we do not take the support for granted. Our President Edgar Lungu takes your vote as a debt. You will be repaid by fulfilling all campaign promises. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI, Youth Rights Activist. Chingola.

Government should pay benefits to retirees Dear Editor,

RETIREES who rendered valuable service to the country during their working life have become destitute. This is as a result of the government's failure to pay them terminal benefits. Some of the affected retirees were retired ten years ago for instance. The worst part being that some retirees died before they could be paid their terminal benefits. This is not right. The gist of the matter is that it is the expectation of every employee to get his or her terminal benefits after retiring from active employment. The problem of delaying to pay the retired civil servants on time has been trending year in year out. In light of this sad state of affairs, there is need for the government to put in place certain mechanisms so that the retirees are paid on time unlike what is prevailing; the retirees flocking to their former work places to press for their money. In light of the poor economic state of Zambia, the delay to pay the pensioners on time ultimately causes more suffering owing to the high cost of living. These retirees don't have the purchasing power to enable them meet their basic needs like food for instance. There are over 12, 000 retired civil servants waiting to receive their terminal benefits. Realistically speaking, this is not a small number. The government should find amicable solutions to ameliorate the problem of not paying the retirees on time. The Minister of Justice, Mr Given Lubinda is on record of having assured the retirees last June that the government had disbursed K500 million earmarked for paying the retirees. To the contrary, Mr Lubinda can't give the reason to justify the nonpayment to the retirees despite his assurance. The way forward is that the government through the Ministry of Finance should mobilise and release money towards the payment of the retirees' benefits. The retirees have been waiting for their money for so many years. They have been reduced to beggars after rendering their service towards the development of the country. E. PHIRI, Lusaka.

Chipolopolo Under-15 ready – Mbewe By MICHAEL MIYOBA

ZAMBIA Under-15 national team coach Chisi Mbewe says his boys have shown a lot of determination to be declared ready for the Eight-Nation ‘Vlatko Markovic' Invitational Tournament in Croatia. Speaking in an interview before departure for Croatia yesterday, Mbewe said it hasn’t been an easy task assembling a team of talented youngsters after the technical team received more than 500 kids who had applied for trials. Mbewe said the youth tournament in Croatia will act as a foundation for the junior Chipolopolo as they

develop their football careers. "I would say this is the first step for these young boys to compete in this Under-15 competition. I believe that in the way we have prepared, the boys will do their level best," Mbewe said. "I feel we should also train these guys to compete and be able to have a winning mentality all the time so that it also sticks in their DNA as they are growing." "But again, we always emphasise when we are working with the Under-15 - our main focus is in developing the players," he added. And speaking when he saw off the players, FAZ president Andrew Kaman-

ga thanked their parents for releasing them to experience their first international outing as footballers. "On behalf of the FAZ executive, I would like to thank the parents for allowing their children to travel particularly that we are having the tournament under difficult conditions with Covid-19 around us. So hats off to the parents and as FAZ we will continue relying on their support," Kamanga said. "To the boys, we hope that your journey will be successful and you will also succeed in the tournament because we remain confident that you are going to represent the country well." The team, led by FAZ Tech-

nical Director Lyson Zulu, Chipolopolo coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic, his local assistant Oswald Mutapa, two medical staff and team manager, Chizengu Lukama will make a stopover in Egypt where they will play young Zamalek in a friendly match. Zambia will start their campaign against North Macedonia on September 23 before facing Bosnia and Herzegovina the following day. They will wrap up their Group B run against Romania on September 25. Other countries participating in the tournament include hosts Croatia, Qatar, Montenegro and Bulgaria.

‘FIFA ON TRACK’ By MICHAEL MIYOBA

F

OOTBALL Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Andrew Kamanga has expressed excitement at the new FIFA rules adopted during the 70th FIFA Congress held virtually. FIFA has adopted wide ranging rules that defines eligibility of players who desire to switch nationalities and Kamanga is happy about the possibilities provided by the newly adopted eligibility re g u l a t i o n s for international players. The new rules deal with acquisition of new nationa l i t y, nationality

entitling players to represent more than one association, stateless individuals and change of association. “There was also the issue of eligibility for players to change national teams which has seen introduction of stateless individuals who can now choose which national team to play for,” Kamanga said. Kamanga also said the Congress approved the 2021 budget. The FAZ boss who attended the congress that was held virtually says he was happy that the congress tackled various issues like the approval of financial support to the membership amounting to US$1.5 billion. Kamanga said the money that was coming under the banner the Covid-19 relief package would have to be accounted for. “I am very happy with the way the congress went. Firstly the meeting

was held virtually arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. FIFA has shown the way by adapting quickly and the Council decided to amend the FIFA Governance Regulations to allow committee meetings to be held by video conference in a virtual format,” Kamanga said. “Arising from those changes a Congress may be held in person, by teleconference or by any other means of communication.” Meanwhile, the FIFA Congress has voted to approve two sets of regulatory amendments. In line with the new global situation, the FIFA Statutes and the Standing Orders of the Congress were amended to allow future FIFA Congress meetings to be held remotely. And FIFA president Gianni Infantino sent out a message of encouragement to all 211 of FIFA’s

member associations (MAs) who attended the congress via videoconference on Friday as the FIFA Congress convened remotely for the first time ever. Meeting online during the global pandemic, with the football landscape looking very different to the backdrop to the previous Congress in 2019, Infantino restated FIFA’s support for the football community. He lauded the FIFA Council’s June decision to make available up to US$1.5 billion, largely funded from the organisation’s solid financial reserves, in order to support the MAs through the FIFA Covid-19 Relief Plan, which has already seen over 150 MAs submit funding applications. “FIFA is not facing a crisis, but football is... The money goes where it has to go: to football, and to help football,” said Infantino.

“On behalf of the FAZ executive, I would like to thank the parents for allowing their children to travel particularly that we are having the tournament under difficult conditions with Covid-19 around us. So hats off to the parents and as FAZ we will continue relying on their support,”

The golf tournament hosted by Lafarge Zambia as part of charity aimed supporting vulnerable communities was held on Friday at Chilanga Golf Club and officiated by Minister of Sport Youth and Child Development Emmanuel Mulenga. Mulenga noted that even under the new normal, sport continues to play a vital role in contributing to economic development of the country. He commended the club leadership for partnering with the corporate world in utilising their facility for humane cause away from the primary goal of promoting sport for heathy living and talent development. “I thank Lafarge for being a long term partner in sport development. I also appeal to other businesses to emulate Lafarge in supporting and implementing Government’s effort in uplifting the living standards of our vulnerable people,” Mulenga said. And Lafarge chief executive officer Jimmy Khan said the company had maintained commitment to its corporate social responsibility programmes. and that the Chilanga community remained steadfast. Khan said that proceeds from last year’s golf day event had been able to enroll over 83 junior golfers in the junior programme and that many were showing signs of becoming excellent golfers.

MADALA I

F you’re in love with someone, at least, be kind enough to pepper their name with proverbial sweet words. A Bulawayo woman broke her old sweetheart’s soul when he found out that he was saved as madala (old man) in her phone. For ‘madala’ Francis Moyo who never thought how his number was saved, however, became a big deal for him when he accidentally saw it in his live-in friend Sicelo Mhlanga’s phone. Madala Francis from Robert Sinyoka in Bulawayo who also apparently expected something more affectionate such as ‘babe, sweetie and honey’ flew into a rage and allegedly pummelled his lover of two years until she fell unconscious. According to reports on Saturday

afternoon, the couple were at home when Moyo misplaced his phone and he took his lover’s phone so that he could call it. It is reported that when he called his number, he was shocked when he discovered that he was saved as Madala. “Moyo who thought the way he was saved didn’t communicate any sentimental attachment started shouting at his lover. When he asked her to find out what it meant, Mhlanga simply looked at him and started stammering. “As she was trying to cook up an excuse, Moyo who was not prepared to buy any of her explanations repeatedly assaulted her with fists all over the body,” the source who claimed had intimate details of the incident recounted, adding that

Moyo expected something more romantic. The source further said after he repeatedly assaulted her, she became unconscious and was later rescued by neighbours. “All along people thought Moyo was a kind man who did not raise his hand on his lover who was always complimenting him saying he was a tiger in bed,” said the source. The matter was reported to the police, but Mhlanga later withdrew the charges at the instigation of her relatives who claimed Moyo had apologised to them. When approached by B-Metro both Moyo and Mhlanga wouldn’t share their problem saying: “This is a family matter. It shouldn’t be discussed with newspapers.” H-METRO

Cop loses uniform to thieves A POLICE officer based in Bulawayo was left clutching thin air after a thief opened his car and stole his uniform. The incident happened last week on Thursday at corner Fort Street and 8th Avenue. The unfortunate cop, Noar Munongowera, is stationed at DHQ Suburban. A source who is close to investigations said on the

day in question Constable Munongowera was travelling along Fort Street when his car developed a fault. He parked his car, a Honda CRV at corner Fort Street and 8th Avenue. “He opened the bonnet of his car and checked what could have been the problem. While he was still fixing his car thieves pounced on his car and stole a satchel contain-

ing riot trousers, webbing belt and a grey shirt,” said a source. The source said the accused person then ran to a Corolla registration number AHE 7235 which was parked a few metres away from his car. “He got inside the Corolla and they sped off with the satchel,” said the source close to investigations.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Commerce Department said it will issue an order Friday that will bar people in the United States from downloading Chinese-owned messaging app WeChat and video-sharing app TikTok starting on September 20. Commerce officials said the ban on new U.S. downloads of TikTok could be still rescinded by President Donald Trump before it takes effect late Sunday as TikTok owner ByteDance races to clinch an agreement over the fate of its U.S. operations. ByteDance has been talking with Oracle Corp and others to create a new company, TikTok Global, that aims to address U.S. concerns about the security of its users’ data. ByteDance still needs Trump’s approval to stave off a U.S. ban. Commerce officials said they will not bar additional technical transactions for TikTok until Nov. 12, which gives the company additional time to see if ByteDance can reach a deal for its U.S. operations. “The basic TikTok will stay intact until Nov. 12,” Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told Fox Business Network.

Commuter uses snake as face mask THE commuter and his reptilian mask, which was wrapped around his neck and mouth, were seen on a bus from Swinton to Manchester on Monday. One passenger, said she thought the passenger was wearing a “funky mask” until she spotted it slithering over hand rails. The eyewitness, who asked to remain anonymous, said she found the incident “really funny”, adding the animal did not seem to be bothering any of her fellow passengers. She said: “No-one batted an eyelid.” Transport for Greater Manchester said a snake was not a valid face covering.

Using a face covering on public transport is mandatory, except for children under the age of 11 or those who are exempt for health or disability reasons. A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said: “Government guidance clearly states that this needn’t be a surgical mask, and that passengers can make their own or wear something suitable, such as a scarf or bandana. “While there is a small degree of interpretation that can be applied to this, we do not believe it extends to the use of snakeskin – especially when still attached to the snake.” -BBC.

Woman with 'Britain's biggest boobs' says her 32NN cups are so big she can't drive LEIA Parker says her huge breasts are "her thing", and are now part of her identity and a key part of how she earns money. And while she loves her 32NN cups, she faces day to day struggles including not being to drive or run, and having to sleep with a pregnancy cushion. They also attract a lot of

negative comments, especially from men, including people who have said her mother should be ashamed of her. But Leia, from Twickenham, south west London, has no regrets about going under the knife five times and splashing out £10,000 for her perfect breasts - and she loves her new figure.

Trump to ban TikTok from app stores

She believes she is the proud owner of “Britain’s biggest boobs,” and claims they earn her up to £10,000 a month through modelling gigs. Leia, who is 5ft 3in, said: “I’ve had five boob jobs. I paid for two myself, which cost a total of £10,000, and the others were paid for by other people. - Mirror

The order will not bar transactions with WeChat-owner Tencent Holdings’ other businesses, including its online gaming operations, and will not prohibit Apple, Google or others from offering TikTok or WeChat apps anywhere outside the United States. - REUTERS

T

HE Zambian fashion and modelling industry has been facing a number of challenges ranging from low incentives for models to cyberbullying.

Models and several other players in the industry have been constantly labelled ' uncultured' and worse still, called 'prostitutes'. However, a few courageous and determined individuals have gone against all odds to prove modelling is as good a profession as any other provided one is focussed and hard working. One such an individual is model, designer and brand influencer Mercy Mukwiza. She has been in the industry for some time now and she is also business owner and National Director for Miss Supranational Zambia. The Daily Nation Lifestyle talks to Mercy about her career and aspirations. NATION LIFESTYLE: Who is Mercy? Give us a brief background about yourself. I am a Zambia model/ entrepreneur born in Kafue raised in Livingstone and Lusaka. I was born in a family of eight with two brothers and three sisters. Growing up, I always knew that I was not cut out for an 8 to 5- hour kind of job, so I used every opportunity I got to help my grandma with her business as a learning experience. This is where I would say I learned some of the things I know about running a business today. After college, I worked for a bank just to gain experience on how things work in the corporate world. And when I felt the time was right, I jumped ship and started my first business. On the other side, I always did modeling jobs as a hobby that sometimes paid. Of course, this hobby ended up to be something that sometime put food on my table and created the persona that everyone has now come to know as Mercy Mukwiza. NATION LIFESTYLE:What are your professional qualifications?

I have a diploma in management studies and a degree in development studies. NATION LIFESTYLE:Tell us how you found yourself in the fashion industry and what exactly do you do? The fashion industry is something I just stumbled upon, which initially started out as a hobby. I represented Zambia in two major beauty contests, Miss International 2014 and Miss Supranational 2019 where I was placed Top 10 social media influencer out of over 80 contestants. NATION LIFESTYLE:What have been your challenges? Zambian organizations have the habit of exploiting creatives. Most organizations will not pay you what you deserve to be paid, that’s if they even pay you at all. I have had people who approach me to work with them and are offering me K400 in food coupons. Which I find very insulting honestly. So, I am tempted to ask if I look hungry(laughs) NATION LIFESTYLE: As a model in Zambia, what are your thoughts about gender violence and cyberbullying? As a victim of cyber bullying, I think it’s very disappointing that there are no laws set up to protect people from cyber bullying. Zambians in my opinion have little or no regard for mental health and the impact that cyber bullying has on it. Words hurt! People need to be more responsible and should be held accountable for what they write on social media. NATION LIFESTYLE: What are your future plans in this fashion industry and how can Zambia do better as country? As National Director of Miss Supranational Zambia, I would like to offer something to the Zambian beauty queens that was never given to me. A support system and formal training. We need more corporate bodies to be involved, huge dimes of money are generated from the fashion industry in other countries, there is no reason why it should be any different in Zambia. NATION LIFESTYLE: Any messages of encouragement to young people out there? You are perfectly capable of achieving anything you want if you put your mind to it. Never let anyone tell you otherwise! And if they do.... use that as your fuel to prove them wrong! NATION LIFESTYLE: What's your view about people who think models are prostitutes and can't have decent marriages? I think that people who marry modeling to prostitution are ignorant and they need to get an education. Your job has nothing to do with whether or not you can make a decent wife, just like every other job in the world, prostitution included. Celebrities agree to ' Smart' drinking By TERENCE MISELO LOCAL celebrities Slapdee, Salma Sky, Bobby East, Wezi Heart Sound, El Mukuka, and Sebastien Dutch have endorsed the campaign to drink responsibly being promoted by Zambian Breweries. The artistes have taken a Smart Drinking pledge in which they will help promote responsible alcohol consumption. Zambian Breweries last

week launched a vigorous awareness campaign against irresponsible alcohol consumption, following the rise in negative beer-related incidents in Zambia. The campaign, dubbed # Re s p o n s i b l e To g e t h e r, will tackle binge drinking, underage drinking, illicit alcohol, drinking and driving, and gender-based violence. This was kicked-off with the company signing a memorandum

of understanding with Lusaka City Council. ZB Country Director Jose Moran launched the awareness campaign in his message to commemorate this year’s Global Beer Responsible Day (GBRD) on September 18. “As Zambian Breweries, we dream big! Therefore, on this special day, we officially launch our vigorous awareness campaign on smart drinking, or sim-

ply put, responsible alcohol consumption,” Mr Moran announced. He explained that the campaign, which would run until the end of 2020, sought to sensitise beerlovers on making smart drinking choices. “The #ResponsibleTogether campaign aims to build awareness among consumers on smart drinking choices and promote evidence-based understanding of the benefits of these choices,” he said. Mr Moran noted that the campaign would highlight the dangers of alcohol abuse and inspire action towards responsible alcohol consumption. “For us, responsible alcohol consumption means drinking in moderation and not letting alcohol run your life or your relationships,” he explained. Mr Moran urged beer-lovers to avoid drinking and driving in order to arrive safe and sound. “You can drink, but please don’t

drive; find someone sober to drive you instead,” he said. The Zambian Breweries country director also called for an end to alcohol-related gender-based violence and underage drinking.

Chanda Na Kay thrill East Point

By TERENCE MISELO

THE famous budding rap duo Chanda Na Kay from Copperbelt on Friday night held its first-ever public performance at East Point Discotech in Lusaka’s Kabwata area. The show was also the club’s official opening following a long break imposed by the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. The Kopala-based duo became popular during the COVID-19 restrictions and have never had a chance to do a public performance. It was therefore inevitable that East Point management chose the lads to have their first interaction with Lusaka fans who specifically enjoy the duo’s music style. Chanda Na Kay have won the hearts of many with their Kopala lingua and style. They are lyrically gifted and their music chemistry is amazing. Most of their songs have enjoyed massive support and airplay to make them gain instant fame. This is the more reason their show was well attended and packed to capacity. This show was also briefly attended by Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa who stormed the stage and showed his dance moves to the satisfaction of the audience. Show hosts KingSuli and Copperbelt’s Jerahyo Inc had difficult times to calm the huge crowd that came to show support to Chanda Na Kay. The hosts, both known for entertaining stage antics made

sure the event packaged nicely as they offered some supporting artistes to showcase their skills with music handled by renowned DJ 800. It was a big moment when Chanda Na Kay stormed the stage. The audience went wild as the two lads unleashed their anthems ‘Chilowe’, ‘ Mbo’ and ‘ Ah nde

twa’. The audience responded positively as the party went on. Amongst artistes that came to show support included Mampi, MozB, Yellow Man and more not forgetting King Deza and the American Soldiers. The show closed around 02:00 hours.

TopStar aids Covid-19 Isolation Facility By NOEL IYOMBWA

THE treatment of COVID-19 cases requires various strategies to manage the psychological treatment of patients admitted to isolation wards across various health facilities. “Once patients are admitted to the isolation wards, the process of recovery is not just about being given medicine but also the psychological aspect of treatment,” said Dr Phallon Mwaba, District Health Director for Mazabuka when he received a donation of a Smart TV and decoder from TopStar Communications Company Limited for the COVID-19 Isolation facility. Dr Mwaba expressed gratitude for the gesture and urged other corporate companies to emulate TopStar in assisting to provide access to information and entertainment to the patients and members of staff who are confined to the isolation facility with just phones as

tools for communication. “This donation will play a big role in psychological treatment of our patients and they will now have access to news and information not only in Zambia but across the world,” he said. And TopStar Public Relations Manager Joy Chula said as a Public Signal distributor, the company had the responsibility to distribute signal to all parts of the country and ensure that Zambian households had access to information and watch affordable TV. Ms. Chula said through this donation, every patient in the isolation facility at the district hospital could have access to local news and information, as well as follow what was being done to help raise awareness of COVID-19. “As a public signal distributor it is our responsibility to make sure that TopStar distributes signal to every part of the country so that people can

access information through digital TV. “Patients deserve to have access to news and information as a way to raise awareness that COVID-19 is real and for them to see what is happening across the country,” she said. Ms. Chula also said as the function of a signal distributor was necessary and significant in the communication and media space, it was important that TopStar puts in place measures that will keep digital television broadcasting operational for the general public to receive signal and access information during the pandemic and support to the Mazabuka District Hospital isolation facility was one of them. “TopStar understands that the accuracy of information weighs much in our fight against the pandemic, thus we will actively cooperate with relevant Government Departments and Agencies to deal with and control the current situation, “she said.

LTHOUGH wild dogs were once found throughout Africa, they have now disappeared from most of their geographic range, with recent estimates suggesting that they have lost nearly 90 percent of their habitat.

Zambia is one of only six countries that still support viable populations of the African wild dog, with the Luangwa ecosystem estimated to have the largest population of dogs in the country followed by the Kafue ecosystem. We spoke with Thandiwe Mweetwa, a Senior Ecologist and Community Educator at the Zambian Carnivore Programme to understand the benefits that wild dogs bring and the challenges the species faces. One of the benefits of having wildlife, especially large carnivores, is that they attract tourists. Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park has earned itself a reputation as one of Africa’s foremost wildlife viewing destinations, with wild dogs being one of the “must see” species for many tourists. “When we think of charismatic megafauna, what comes to our minds is usually lions, leopards, elephants and rhinos but dogs are quickly rising to become a profile species that many tourists want to see and Zambia is quickly gaining the reputation of being one of the few landscapes where you have a strong chance of seeing them,” says Thandiwe. Aside from tourism, wild dogs also have immense ecological value. “Dogs are among the five species of large carnivores that exist in Zambia, so they play a unique role in influencing ecosystem structure and function”, says Thandiwe. Wild dogs and other predators are critical in maintaining healthy ecosystems as they remove vulnerable prey, such as the old, injured and sick, leaving more food for the survival and success of healthy prey animals. They also help slow down the spread of diseases by controlling the size of prey populations. Thandiwe identified a number of challenges facing wild dogs in the Luangwa ecosystem, many of which result from human activities. “One of the key issues affecting wild dogs here has to do with the illegal bushmeat trade.” The illegal bushmeat

PLIGHT OF THE AFRICAN WILD DOG park and surrounding game management areas, where most wire snares are set”, says Thandiwe. Apart from threats arising from the illegal bushmeat trade, the African wild dog has also been a victim of false myths. “Historically, dogs have been persecuted in many places because of the false perception that they are vicious killers.” While African wild dogs are excellent hunters and often take down prey larger than themselves, they are not known to attack humans. The International Union for Conservation of Nature

trade is a major threat to the survival of wild dogs and other large carnivores in Zambia for two reasons. The first is loss of prey base due to rampant poaching to sustain demand for illegal bushmeat. Over the years, poachers have hunted prey species like impalas, which are an important food source for wild dogs, to near extinction, leaving wild dogs without food. And as their prey base rapidly declines, wild dogs are finding it difficult to sustain themselves in large numbers. The second threat that comes from the illegal bush-

meat trade is indirect bycatch, where wire snares meant to trap bushmeat species like impalas, catch species that are not targeted like lions, hyenas, leopards, wild dogs and sometimes even big animals like elephants. Thandiwe explained that wire snaring is particularly dangerous to wild dogs because they are constantly moving across huge territories, covering distances of up to 20km per day, which increases their likelihood of being caught in a wire snare. “Dogs are also vulnerable to snaring because they usually move between the national

reports that the population level of African wild dogs is in a likely irreversible decline, making them one of the most endangered predators on the African continent. The Zambian Carnivore Programme has been championing the conservation of Zambia’s large carnivores and the ecosystems they reside in through the use of scientific data such as population dynamics and DNA sampling to ascertain threats as well as to identify possible interventions. ZCP also works with local communities through awareness activities that aim to dispel dangerous myths about carnivores as well as to educate the community on how to coexist with carnivores, including the charismatic African wild dog. While the population of African wild dogs is on the decline in many countries, Zambia still has sizable numbers. This is the right time for us to put in place measures that will ensure the species not only survives but flourishes. The pioneering work done by the Zambian Carnivore Programme and its partners the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and Conservation South Luangwa is commendable and this is a fight we must all join.

‘BREAKTHROUGH’ TREATMENT SLASHES VIRUS DEATH RISK: STUDY A

N aerosol-based treatment could drastically reduce the number of new coronavirus patients dying from the disease or requiring intensive care, according to preliminary results released Monday by a British biotech firm. In a randomised trial of 100 patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19, those who received an inhaled formula of the protein interferon beta were at 79 percent lower risk of developing severe disease compared to those who received a placebo. They were also more than twice as likely to make a full recovery compared with the control group. The firm behind the treatment, known as SNG001, said the preliminary results suggested “a major breakthrough” in the pandemic. “We are all delighted with the trial results announced today, which showed that SNG001 greatly reduced the number of hospitalised COVID-19 patients who progressed from requiring oxygen to requiring ventilation,” said Richard Marsden, CEO of Synairgen. The results published Monday have not yet been peer-reviewed

and the sample size is relatively small. But if confirmed the treatment could revolutionise the way COVID-19 is dealt with in hospitals. ‘Game changer’ Interferon beta is a naturally occurring protein, commonly used to treat multiple sclerosis. Natural fight against infection It forms part of the body’s natural fight against infection, and the novel coronavirus suppresses its production in an attempt to evade an immune response. Delivering the protein directly into the lungs of patients is designed to trigger a robust immune response to the virus, even in patients whose immune system is already weakened by infection. “The results confirm our belief that interferon beta... has huge potential as an inhaled drug to be able to restore the lung’s immune response,” said Tom Wilkinson, professor or respiratory medicine at the University of Southampton. He said the trial showed SNG001 was effective in “enhancing protection, accelerating recover and countering the impact of SARS-CoV-2 virus.”

Naveed Sattar, professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow said the new treatment “could be a game changer”. “With small (trial) numbers comes less certainty on the true level of benefit, or whether benefits vary between people with differing risk characteristics,” said Sattar, who was not involved in the research. “Such work would require a larger trial but, even so, these results are very exciting.” There are currently a number of treatments available for patients hospitalised with COVID-19. Last month a Britain-based team of researchers lead by the University of Oxford announced they had successfully reduced the risk of death among seriously ill patients by administering the commonly available steroid dexamethasone. Several countries have also issued the emergency authorisation for treatment with anti-viral remdesivir. - DAILY NATION, Kenya

STUDY: Virus immunity may disappear within months

P

ATIENTS who recover from coronavirus infections may lose their immunity to reinfection within months, according to research released on Monday that experts said could have a "significant" influence on how governments manage the pandemic.

In the first study of its kind, a team led by researchers from King's College London examined the levels of antibodies in more than 90 confirmed virus patients and how they changed over time. Blood tests showed even individuals with only mild COVID-19 symptoms mounted some immune response to the virus. Of the study group, 60 percent showed a "potent" viral response in the first few weeks after infection. However, after three months only 16.7 percent had maintained high levels of COVID-

19-neutralising antibodies, and after 90 days several patients had no detectable antibodies in their bloodstream. When the body encounters an external danger such as a virus, it mobilises cells to track down and kill the culprit. As it does so, it produces proteins known as antibodies that are programmed to target the specific antigen the body is fighting, like a key cut for a particular lock. As long as someone has enough antibodies, they will be able to snub out new infections, giving them immunity. But Monday’s research suggests immunity cannot be taken for granted and may not last more than a few months, as is true with other viruses such as influenza. PLAYING THE LOTTERY Experts said the findings may change how governments plan for the next phase of the pandemic, including how they fund and organise vaccine research and development. “This is an important

study that starts to define the longer-term dynamics of the antibody response to SARSCoV-2,” said Lawrence Young, professor of Molecular Oncology at the University of Warwick, using the full name of the virus strain. “It further emphasises the need for us to better understand what a protective im-

mune response looks like if we are to develop an effective vaccine,” said Young, who was not involved in the research. James Gill, an honorary Clinical Lecturer at Warwick Medical School, said the research reiterated the need for everyone to continue taking measures to mitigate the virus spreading, particularly at the start of Europe’s holiday season. “In the same way that these patients were surprised to have antibodies to COVID19, we should NOT be surprised if any protective benefit is mild, or at least transient,” he said. “If you played the lottery and won £10, you wouldn’t immediately think that you had acquired increased natural luck, and used your life savings to buy further lottery tickets. “Even those with a positive antibody test -- especially those who cannot account for where they may have been exposed -- should continue to use caution, social distancing and appropriate mask use.” DAILY NATION, Kenya
