BEMBA POLITICIANS WARNED
Vol. 6. Issue 2702
Mr Augustine Mubanga
By ROGERS KALERO
POWER hungry Bemba politicians have been warned against unprincipled alliances and a proliferation of parities for the sake of getting into power without thinking of consequences. And a member of the ukusefya pa ngwena Copperbelt committee has said most of those who have formed political parties with individual char-

acters are not interested in developing the nation and improving people's lives, but only interested in pushing personal agendas. Mr Augustine Mubanga said the proliferation of political parties formed by people who have failed to serve under one individual was a clear indication of selfish and greedy people who are more interested in power than serving the interests of the people. Two Coronavirus survivors re-infected By SIMON MUNTEMBA
TWO people who had recently recovered from Covid-19 have been re-infected, Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya has disclosed. This is barely 24 hours after Dr Chilufya cautioned the Covid-19 survivors against laxity in adhering to preventive guidelines against the pandemic or risk being re-infected. The minister on Friday warned that there was evidence of re-infection among people who have recovered from Covid-19 because they were not immune to the pandemic. To Page 3

COVID-19 VICIOUS IS the coronavirus letting up or just giving the nation a false sense of ease? The pandemic seems to have a mind of its own and will definitely not give us a break any time soon, what with reports of re-infections now surfacing. Yesterday, Health Minister Dr Chitalu Chilufya disclosed that two people who had recently recovered from Covid-19 have been re-infected; a sobering development for anyone who thought the virus was done with this country or letting up. We may have a 90 percent recovery rate from Covid-19, but it would appear that this will be negated by re-infections if these are not contained promptly. This quagmire is not only for health personnel to contend with but also ordinary Zambians to worry about and reflect on the way everyone has casually responded to efforts aimed at combating the pandemic. There are some key questions that the nation needs to deal with. Why are majority Zambians ignoring safety measures when these have been made known to everyone in all manner of communication medium available? The Ministry of Health in conjunction with the Ministry of Communications and Broadcasting has mounted a spirited campaign to sensitise people on the dangers of Covid-19 and how each individual can protect themselves and others. The message is simple and unambiguous. Stay safe by staying home unless it is absolutely necessary. Wash your hands, sanitise and avoid handshakes and most importantly, practice social distancing, which means avoiding crowded places and observing more than a metre distance from the nearest person. In furtherance of this, government closed all public and private schools, bars, night clubs to mention but a few. Apart from the readmission of examination classes, all other pupils have not been allowed to attend class. So one would wonder where we are going wrong as a nation that the pandemic should start reappearing in people that have been healed. One would have assumed, that those who have recovered from Covid-19 would have developed some sort of immunity. Alas, this is not the case and this is what makes this disease deadly and a force to be reckoned with. On Friday, Dr Chilufya had cautioned the Covid-19 survivors against laxity in adhering to preventive guidelines against the pandemic or risk being re-infected. The minister warned that there was evidence of re-infection among people who have recovered from Covid-19 because they were not immune to the pandemic. Speaking during the routine update on Covid-19 yesterday, Dr Chilufya announced that the country had for the first time recorded 2 cases of re-infection of the virus since the outbreak of the pandemic. One would have thought that having gone through the torturous experience of a Covid- infection, survivors would be more careful and guard against re-infection. Perhaps this will now serve as a lesson for everyone that no one is safe and no one is immune. This is sad especially for the health care workers who have been breaking their backs fighting to save lives. Now they will have to worry not only about new cases, but re-infections and how to care for everyone. Government should not relent but continue pushing the message on safety measures. This is the only defence that the country can be sure of. Let us all practice social distancing. Crowding in public places should not be allowed.
HH committed a blatant crime on sale of Musio-OA-Tunya Intercontinental Hotel "He was a listed Director of Sun International Zambia and he did not disclose his interests" By SEAN TEMBO
I
WAS very happy when l heard that the UPND Party President, Mr Hakainde Hichilema was going to be featuring live on a special Hot FM program to provide further explanations to allay the allegations that had been leveled against him by Honorable Edith Nawakwi, the Party President for FDD, who at the time of privatization was the Minister of Finance under the FTJ Government. Like l have always said, these allegations of misconduct against Mr Hichilema are very serious, especially given his position as an aspiring President of this Republic. That is why l was not agreeable with Mr Hichilema’s initial approach of seeking to downplay these allegations by responding to them using Facebook and Twitter memes. I have always insisted that Mr Hichilema needed to explain himself in the same detailed manner that Honorable Nawakwi made her allegations. And am sure that l am not the only citizen that demanded for him to explain himself in detail. You see, the assets which Mr Hichilema is alleged to have misappropriated are national assets, and as a bonafide citizen of this Republic, that makes them my assets too. So l have every right to pursue this matter to its logical conclusion. The fact that l am a practicing Statutory Auditor, Chartered Accountant and Insolvency Practioner, gives me a privileged position to better understand the issues of corporate governance that are at play here. I would be failing in my duties as a citizen of the Republic if l did not use my privileged position of being qualified and experienced to actually help in explaining this national matter to my fellow citizens who might have the knowledge to understand it by themselves. That is the reason why l have written two articles on this matter since it arose last week, and this one is a third of such an article. When l wrote my last article a few days ago, Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s lawyers had just written a demand letter to Honorable Edith Nawakwi. In that demand letter, they also sought to explain, on behalf of their client, three specific allegations. The first allegation was that Mr Hichilema had bought his Kabulonga house from Lima Bank which he was liquidating, the second was that he had undervalued RAMCOZ assets during privatization and the third was that during the sale of Mosiotunya Intercontinental Hotel, as Negotiating Chairman, he had ignored higher bids of $26m, $20m and $10 and instead sold the hotel to a lower bidder Sun International Zambia at $6.5m, which lower bidder he was a director in and has remained a di-
rector in. Like I indicated in my previous article, based on the explanations that Mr Hakainde’s lawyers had proffered on his behalf in the demand letter to Honorable Nawakwi, my view was that Mr Hichilema had reasonably been exonerated on the first and second issue, but not the third issue involving the sale of Intercontinental hotel. And so, during his Hot FM program yesterday, my attention was specifically directed on what his explanations would be on the last issue, and not necessarily the first and second issues. Although the interview started a bit later than scheduled, l made sure that l remained glued to my two-band radio. I was happy to note that Mr Hichilema was very prepared for the interview. He did not only provide detailed and specific explanations, but he also backed up his assertions with documents, which was very commendable. However, this was only with regard to the Kabulonga House and RAMCOZ issues. On his sale of the intercontinental Livingstone hotel, Mr Hichilema failed to explain himself for the second time. Mr Hichilema’s argument regarding his sale of Intercontinental Hotel is that he was not a SHAREHOLDER of Sun International Zambia, which bought the hotel. However, the allegations are not that he was a shareholder but that he was a DIRECTOR in Sun International Zambia at the time that him as Negotiating Chairman for the Zambia Privatization Agency decided to sale Mosiotunya Intercontinental Hotel to Sun International Zambia at a lower purchase consideration of $6.5 million when they were other higher bids including $26 million, $20 million and $10 million. During his entire protracted interview on Hot FM, Mr Hakainde Hichilema did not at any given time deny that he was the ZPA Negotiating Chairman in the sale of Mosiotunya Intercontinental Hotel in Livingstone. Neither did he deny that he sold the hotel to a lower bidder of $6.5 million when they were higher bids of up to $26 million. During the entire interview, Mr Hichilema did not deny the allegation that he was a Director in Sun International Zambia Limited which is a subsidiary of Sun International South Africa, and which was incorporated in Zambia on 18th November 1997. Neither did he deny the allegation that the process to sale the hotel started as early as July 1997, no that the sale was only concluded around March 1998. The summary of the timeline of the allegations that were leveled against Mr Hichilema regarding the sale of the hotel, which Mr Hichilema failed to refute yesterday are that he was
appointed as ZPA Negotiating Chairman for the sale of the hotel around July 1997 and that while he was ZPA Negotiating Chairman, he incorporated Sun International Zambia Limited on 18th November 1997 and in March 1998, he sold the hotel to a company that he had incorporated and in which he was a Director. To be continued tomorrow My view is that these are very serious allegations regarding his conduct in the sale of the hotel, which Mr Hichilema failed to categorically deny yesterday. He would do well if he answered them at his earliest opportunity. The people of Zambia would like to know; was he the ZPA Negotiating Chairman in the sale of the hotel? Did the sale of the hotel commence around July 1997? Did he incorporate a company called Sun International (Zambia) Limited on 18th November 1997? Did he, as ZPA Negotiating Chairman sale the hotel in March 1998 to a company called Sun International (Zambia) Limited which he had incorporated a few months earlier, for a lower price of $6.5 million when they were higher offers as high as $26 million? Now, let me address Mr Hichilema’s arguments regarding his role in the sale of the hotel. His first argument is that the Sun International offer came with a $50 million dollar investment promise. However, we are told that the Sun International offer was not the only offer that came with a promise of reinvestment. All the other offers came with comparable reinvestment promises, so there was nothing unique about the Sun International reinvestment promise. Mr Hichilema’s other argument is that the sale of the hotel to Sun International (Zambia) Limited is one of the few privatization success stories because it had remained operational up to now. Well, firstly there are plenty of the privatized companies which are operational and robust today, including Zambian Breweries, Zambia Sugar, ZANACO etc., and secondly the fact that a privatized company is robust and operational today does not excuse the illegality that might have taken place in its privatization process. The third argument that Mr Hichilema puts forward is that he was not a Shareholder in Sun International (Zambia) Limited. Like l earlier said, l have been very keenly following this privatization issue since it caught momentum last week and l don’t know of anyone who has accused Mr Hichilema to have been a shareholder in Sun International (Zambia) Limited, but a Director. So the quest by Mr Hichilema to answer an allegation which was not leveled against him and instead ignore one which was, is akin to that student who walks into an
exam room and finds that none of the things that they had studied have come in the exam. So in order to show the examiner that they at least know something, they just begin to answer questions that have not been asked in the exam, simply because that’s all they can manage to do. Allow me to now address the issue of whether the fact that Mr Hichilema was not a shareholder of Sun International (Zambia) Limited but only it’s Director would still mean there was a conflict of interest or not. The answer is a definite YES. There was a conflict of interest. The only question is whether Mr Hichilema declared interest or not. My take is that he most likely did not, because if he had, he would have been gleefully waving the declaration in front of the camera during his interview yesterday, in the same manner and fashion that he was waving his title deed for the Kabulonga house. The next question is whether such apparent conflict of interest would amount to a criminal offense or whether it is just an ethical and moral issue? Well, section 11 of the Zambia Privatization Act Cap 386 of the Laws of Zambia states “if any person is present at a meeting of the Agency or any committee of the Agency at which any matter is the subject of consideration and in which matter that person or his immediate family or his professoinal and business partners, is directly or indirectly interested in a private or professional capacity, he shall, as soon as is practicable after commencement of the meeting disclose such interest and shall not, unless the Agency or the committee otherwise directs, take part in any consideration or discussion of or vote on, any question touching on such matter”. Indeed, section 11 of the Zambia Privatization Act, Cap 386 of the Laws of Zambia above is very clear. Therefore, if Mr Hichilema did not declare interest, which l doubt he did, then he possibly committed a criminal offense. If indeed he committed a criminal offense in the sale of Mosiotunya Intercontinental Hotel in Livingstone, the next question is what are the penalties? Well, this question is answered by section 48 of the same Act, which states “a person who knowingly falsifies any information or KNOWINGLY DOES NOT DISCLOSE ANY MATERIAL FACTS or solicits for his own use or as agent of any other person any confidential information relating to the privatization of a State Owned enterprise shall be guilty of an offense and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding fifty thousand penalty units or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, or to both”. There you have it.

BEMBA POLITICIANS WARNED From Page 1 Mr Mubanga was reacting Chief Chikwanda’s recent remarks on the proliferation of Bemba-led political parties as an indication that Bembas were greedy. In an interview in Kitwe recently, Mr Mubanga said those who want to be in leadership to improve people' s lives must be ready to serve under some one because development is attained by a culmination of strengths, ideas and other issues. "So any person who is not ready to be led then he is not
interested in pushing the developmental agenda, but wants to be on top to lead others and push his own personal agenda. "So it is not correct to think that all those who form political parties have an agenda for development and improving people's lives. No, others form political parties to advance or push personal agendas," Mr Mubanga said. Mr Mubanga said those who want to push any developmental agenda will always humble themselves, exchange ideas and solutions on how best to deal with challenges and problems in the communities. And an opposition leader has advised fellow politicians to scrutinize people they wanted to team up with. New Congress Party (NCP) president Peter Chanda said political parties would be going against the principle of good governance by joining an alliance with the sole purpose of .
Physical fitness routines key, says Prof Goma By JULIET MAKWAMA
THE Zambia Non-Communicable Diseases NCDs Alliance has called for increased public spaces for recreation to encourage physical fitness among populations in view of increased NCDs. Alliance chairperson Fastone Goma is concerned over increasing occurrences of NCDs and people not having a physical activity routine. Non-communicable diseases have been identified as a major public health concern with significant social and economic implications in terms of health care-needs, loss of productivity and premature deaths. Among the common non-communicable diseases in Zambia are diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular conditions among others. Professor Goma says Zambia needs these public spaces as they will go a long way in tackling the health burden of NCDs which is too huge.
Prof Goma says space is needed for people to engage in physical activity in order to reduce the risk of NCDs among the Zambian population. “Everyone especially the young ones need to incorporate exercise into their normal routines to promote good health and walk ways to encourage people to walk around are needed,” Prof Goma said.

POLITICAL parties participating in the Mandombe Local Government by-election should conduct peaceful campaigns ahead of the polls, Chief Mphuka of the Chikunda people of Luangwa District has appealed. The traditional leader emphasised the need to embrace peace and unity during the
campaigns to ensure that the by-election runs smoothly. Chief Mphuka said this in an exclusive interview with ZANIS in Luangwa yesterday. “What I want is peace, and people to vote peacefully, let us put our hands together and see that the elections go well,” he said. He urged the candidates vy-

In the 2020-2021 rain season, the country is likely to experience dry spells across the country especially over Luapula, Muchinga and Northern Provinces including the Northern Districts of eastern province and increased chance for floods and flash flood prone areas,” he added. Mr Kafwaya notes that the government has continued to invest in modern automatic data collection equipment to aid the process of weather forecasting and mitigating the impact of climate change. He disclosed that the government has added 110 Automatic Weather Stations to the old 39 Manual Weather Stations across the country. He stated that it is important to note that in every season dry spells occur in the middle of the rain season and sometimes

Zambia to receive normal rainfall THE country is likely to receive normal to above normal rainfall during the 2020-2021 rain season, the Ministry of Transport and Communication has announced. Minister of Communication and Transport, Mutotwe Kafwaya says some parts of the country will however, experience prolonged dry spells like North-Western, Muchinga, Luapula and Northern Provinces. ZANIS reports that Mr Kafwaya said this during a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday, adding that the 2020-2021 rain season is likely to be fully started by end of November 2020, while some areas will receive rains much earlier. Mr Kafwaya has since advised farmers to safeguard their harvested crops properly to avoid damage, as rains may begin earlier than expected in some parts of the country like North Western, Luapula, Northern, Copperbelt and some parts
Mr Chilangwa stated that government had this year released K 1.7 million for the maintenance of the road which links Milenge to Samfya district. He tasked RDA to make the road passable before the onset of the rainy season. And Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Charles Mushota ordered RDA management to take swift action to ensure the officers on site
double up their efforts. Mr Mushota noted that a good road network is key in developing the area hence the urgent need to work on the road. "The money government released is for the rehabilitation of the road and not for your hefty allowances. Ensure you put all the machinery in place and start doing proper works," he added. Meanwhile, Acting RDA Luapula Province Regional Manager Bernard Zulu clarified that ideally, the workers are supposed to work on 700 metres per day Mr. Zulu said he will sit the officers down and ensure they improve their work culture and do proper graveling of the Milenge-Kasanka road.

Set up privatisation court - Sinkamba By SANFROSSA MANYINDA
T
HE opposition Green Party has called on the Chief Justice to evoke article 133 sub 3 of the constitution of Zambia which requires her to constitute a special court to urgently deal with the privitisation matter. The party says the court should be instituted to specifically deal with privitisation matters, among other criminal matters, that took place between 1992 and 2020. The party has since written to the chief justice and copied the President of the republic of Zambia so that he could facilitate the establishment of the court. Party president Peter Sinkamba told a media briefing in Kitwe that this was the only way the matter could be dealt with once and for all. Mr Sinkamba said that this was the time for the President to show his seri-
ousness on the fight against corruption. He said that it was time for him to get practical on what he has been preaching by facilitating the establishment of the court which may deal with the matter quickly compared to the high court. “We have been observing the heated debates that have been going on for the past two weeks and what we are seeing is scary and dangerous. Tempers have been rising which we feel if we are not careful, will set the country on fire," he said. Mr Sinkamba said there was need to find the way forward on the issue that would benefit the whole country. The opposition had noted with concern that there was no clear agenda to get the matter sorted out. He said such a situation if allowed to continue without quick interventions was placing the country's peace at risk given the way people were reacting on the matter.
Illegal Kasama Clinic closed By SIMON MUNTEMBA
KASAMA Municipal Council (KMC) has with immediate effect closed a clinic that was illegally operating in Chitamba Compound. According to Kasama Town Clerk Zakeyo Mbao, the closure was effected following a tip-off from the residents over the illegality that has been going on at the named house which the owner has been using as a health facility. Mr Mbao identified the owner of the closed clinic as Dr Gerald Chishimba Ng’onga of Chitamba Compound. He said during an im-
promptu operation at the named house, a team of health inspectors from the KMC, Ministry of Health as well as officers from the Health Professions Council of Zambia and the Zambia Police Service found people seated outside waiting to be attended to by the doctor. Mr Mbao said the owner could, however, not produce any permit that allows him to operate as a health facility contrary to the Public Health Act Cap 295, the Food and Drugs Safety Act No. 7 of 2019 and the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019 of the Laws of Zambia “During inspection, it

SOUTH FARMERS SHUN FRA By NATION REPORTER
SOME farmers in Southern province have opted to sell their maize to briefcase buyers instead of the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) following a directive from UPND top officials. This came to light on Friday when FRA executive director Chola Kafwabulula inspected maize sheds in Chikankata district. But a UPND Councilor has described as nonsense any political interference in the purchase of maize by FRA from farmers, which is aimed at preserving national food security. According to Mr. Kafwabulula, of the 3.3 million metric tons of maize Zambia recorded in the 2019-2020 farming season, Southern province produced 488,000 metric tons but the FRA has so far bought only 9,000
was revealed that sanitation at the premises is poor. There are no proper toilets for people to use and no running water. Further, the facility has no proper room for the storage of medicine as well as no mechanism to dispose of waste. “There was no waiting area and neither did people have face masks nor observing social distance,” he said. He said the local authority would not condone any form of activities within its jurisdiction that put the lives of the people in danger. Mr Mbao appealed to the general public to report all suspicious and illegal activities so that appropriate action could be taken.
tons in the region. A source who sought anonymity told journalists that soon after farmers finished harvesting their maize in April this year, Chikankata MP Kabwe Chrispin Mwiinga allegedly urged them on a local radio station not to sell their produce to the agency on grounds that it paid late, fertilizer was expensive, and that government allegedly did not care about them. "Since this is the opposition stronghold most farmers listened and they have since been selling their maize to briefcase buyers," the source said. But UPND Malala ward Councilor Ian Namakala apologized to Mr. Kafwabulula for the farmers' move not to sell their maize to the FRA. Mr. Namakala also thanked government for enabling people of Chikankata
to buy maize from the FRA during the hunger situation following a drought in the previous farming season. He said he is worried that the farmers in the district do not want to sell their maize to FRA after benefiting from the agency during the hunger situation when most people were feeding on wild fruits. He said he does not tolerate the nonsense of political interference in the purchase of maize by FRA from the farmers. "There is no way you can you can politicise this issue which can help a lot of people. You can politicise other issues but not this one which is independent. "Only a few months ago we had a hard time when everyone struggled up and down looking for food. FRA helped us to buy maize from the Kaleya shed in Mazabu-
ka at K111 per 50 kilogram bag of maize and by then some people were selling maize at K300 per 50 kilogram bag. We should learn to appreciate as farmers," Mr. Namakala said. He further disclosed that he is also one of the farmers that have sold maize to FRA in the current crop marketing season and has since been paid all his money. But when contacted for a comment, the Chikankata lawmaker said it was not true that he urged people to sell their maize to FRA. Mr Mwiinga said it was up to the farmers to sell their produce to any organization or person they wanted. “It is not true. Besides, I am not the one who was farming those maize on their behalf to have control over then. I don’t talk ill about other organisations,” he said.

Mwakalombe urges youth to form cooperative 5 health posts unveiled in Mafinga By JOHN KOMBE
CHONGWE Member of Parliament, Japhen Mwakalombe has challenged youths to engage in productive activities that would improve their lives. Mr Mwakalombe has implored youths in the district to form cooperatives in order for them to benefit from youth empowerment schemes which have been made available by government. He said this yesterday when he addressed artists during a Presidential Youth Empowerment Fund Scheme meeting
for artist in Chongwe themed "understanding the value of art and culture-Art and Humanity". Mr Mwakalombe said forming cooperatives would enable youths in the area to combine and share business ideas which will help them to uplift their livelihood The one day symposium was attended by Artists based in Chongwe, youth cooperatives and other youths from Chongwe who displayed different artistic works such as curving and paintings. The Lawmaker also donated three welding machines to three youth cooperatives each worth
K30, 000. 00. He observed that youths were the leaders of today and as such must make every effort to be productive. He stressed that government was resolved to ensure that the youths were empowered. He said that this was why government had released substantial sums of money for youth empowerment programs. He therefore challenged the youths to form cooperatives in order for them to access the available funds. And deputy director in the ministry of youth and sport, Cade Chikobe stressed that the youth
empowerment programs were not discriminatory. He said that every youth was eligible to apply for any available empowerment program regardless of political affiliation. Mr Chikobe encouraged young people to work closely with the ministry to access the fund. And National Arts Council (NAC) chairperson Patrick Samwimbila commended government under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu for empowering artist in the country with a K30 million revolving fund.

Speaking during the official opening of a health post at Choma, Mr Siwale said it was the PF government's desire to take health
care services closer to the people. Mr Siwale said Government had constructed two stateof-art hospitals in Thendele and Muyombe that are projected to serve up to 110, 000 people in the district once commissioned. He said the health facilities that Government had constructed
at a huge cost would reduce maternal-related deaths. NGOs SILENCE OVER INSULTS AGAINST WOMEN WORRYING Dear Editor,
T
HE foul language which has been flying around against women and youth politicians who expressed their own views on the era of privatization leaves much to be desired. The gross intolerance and abuse against Government Spokesperson Honourable Dora Siliya, Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) leader Edith Nawakwi and other Youth voices has been received with gross intolerance. Even my sister Mutale Mwanza has been at the receiving end of cyber bullying for merely doing her job, yet the proponents of press freedom seems to surrender her to the intolerant players. It is a fact that Ms Mwanza raised a questions about HH's unexplained wealth within the scope of her duties. This has been combined with other supplementary threats to youths who have been told that they will be persecuted in the unlikely event the known losing Presidential candidate Hakainde Sammy Hichilema became President. We are concerned that neither the women Non-Governmental Organizations nor the human rights activists have come to censure that hate speech the women and youths
Ms Nawakwi alike have fallen to victims. The same observations have received equal prominence to the youths who have been intimidated for merely exercising their fundamental freedoms of expression. Where are organizations such as OCIDA, Action Aid, NGOCC, CISCA, GEARS initiative, etc. when UPND supporters take turns in rapping the Republican Constitution in so far as it provides for freedom of expression through unpalatable language? We are wondering why the various CSOs can give us this dead silence yet
Ms Siliya they blow loud trumpets when our youth colleagues fall into conflict with the law. For instance, we are all witnesses to the way suspended Eastern Province PF Youth Chairman has been condemned by some CSOs yet the same energy cannot be utilized to come to the defense of patriotic youths who are merely exercising their fundamental freedom to scrutinize those who are aspiring to become Presidents in this country. Why has the esteemed organizations established for the noble cause abandoned us at
this hour of need? It is clear the UPND is the Anti/Youth/Women movement which is bent at creating the artificial shortage of youthful resources in their ranks and file with a view to creating space for recycled and finished politicians who crossed floor from PF and MMD to hijack UPND. We are happy that there is a user friendly political party PF with the Youth oriented leader in our fit and able leader of the Christian and Democratic Republic of Zambia. This is why we appreciate the goodwill by President Lungu who has embraced the all-inclusive approach for youths and women. This is the reason most well-meaning youths and women finds comfort to associate with President Lungu and the PF. This has therefore renew our vigor to see the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Bill no. 10 of 2016 which will institutionalize the participation of youths and women in the decision making processes. The opponents of Bill 10 want the women and youth presence in the decision making positions. Marvin Chanda Mberi Youth Rights Activist Lusaka
I spent my mid-morning listening to Mr Hakainde Hichilema belabor to explain his role in the privatisation saga and like many, I was left wondering what that was all about. I was waiting for him to explain step by step what happened in the sale of the hotel. I waited in vain. Now I also got shocked when he started talking about the Patriotic Front government wanting to kill him. Mwebantu sure, kill him for what? In Zambia there are no such killings. Sometimes people really over rate themselves, Ba HH please no one in PF wants to kill you. If you misbehave, yes you can be arrested. Stop maligning the President by mentioning his name in such foolish imaginations of yours. But this exaggeration of killing plots should stop. This man should stop inflaming his cadres by feeding them with such fake information. The issue at hand is the sale of the hotel, in which the former Finance Minister, Madam Edith Nawakwi has chal-
lenged the UPND leader. That is where he should exert his energies in explaining. Now that Madam Nawakwi says she is ready for him in court, I am also excited to hear what will come out from there. Al last now the nation has a chance to get to the bottom of this privatization saga. We want to know what transpired and if some people got undue benefit from the process. This is what we are looking forward to not these fake nonsense about killings. Chrisantius Changwereza Lusaka businessman and PF sympathizer
Make hay while the sun is still shining Dear Editor
10 years ago, Chris Zumani Zimba, Saboi Imboela, Kangwa 'Jason Kabanana' Chileshe and myself embarked on an ECZ, UNDP sponsored Anti-Violence campaign. We engaged famous musicians to come up with songs, jingles and make media appearances to sensitise and educate youths against political violence. I remember the tension between the Kopala artists and the Lusaka artists during the first workshop we held at Mika Hotel. You could feel the rivalry between Marky 2 and Slap Dee who were both leading 'their staples' of the likes of Afunika and Ruff Kaida. The likes of JK, Malembe, Suwilanji, OC, CQ, Dalisoul, Black Muntu, were in attendance and mostly were playing the role of elderly statesmen trying to downplay and ease the tension. During one of my speeches i professed my love and respect for King Dizzo and King Buga and i encouraged them to take a leaf from order artists like JK who have used their talent to not only make a name for themselves but to make a fortune and do great things with their lives. Like any real hip hop head, i enjoyed the beef between Slap D and Macky 2 because it pushed them to be more aggressive creatively in a bid to out-rap, out-sing and out-sell each other. I reminded them that the music industry in Zambia is still young and it is hard to make
a killing out of music. 10 years later i admire how these two young gentlemen have grown into brothers and arguably two of the most happening and most consistent artists of our young generation. These gentlemen have built music empires and they have used their brands to venture into other businesses. Today, we are happy to see Slap making cash off commercials and Buga making his paper as an entrepreneur. We are happy seeing these guys making hit after hit and pushing the boundary beyond Zambia. To young and/or upcoming artists such as Yo Maps, Chanda Na Kay among many, you can all draw some valuable lessons from guys like Dizzo and Buga and learn how to survive in the game. Music is very competitive and it is not easy to stay relevant for a long time. Look at big artists such as Boyz 2 Men, Westlife, MJB and many others, where are they now? Many are still releasing very good music but their fan base has terribly shrunk, they are no longer 'relevant'. My advice to young and upcoming musicians is make your money now while you are still hot, invest it wisely and venture into other things. Don't allow the fame and fortune get to your head, trust me it doesn't last forever before you know it there will be someone else hotter than you. God bless you. ANTONIO M. MWANZA

A MAKENI Oriental compound woman has sued her neighbour’s mother in the Kanyama local court for calling her stinky and wants compensation. Judith Phiri, 50, a widow of the location in question sued Josephine Mando, 60, a house wife of the same locality for calling her a stinky woman. Facts before the court are that the two live on the same house block popularly known as Mudadada when on unknown date in August, 2020, Mando’s daughter told some security officer in the compound that, Phiri was selling unauthorised famous locally brewed vodka called Kachasu to her husband and that she should be chased from the residence. Phiri told the court that she had no problems with Mando’s daughter until she reported lies to the security in the residence over kachasu brewing.
I am not a witch - marketeer By EPHRAIM CEASAR.
A JOHN Lainge compound resident has dragged her neighbour to Kanyama local court for calling her a witch after she lost her marriage. Facts before the court are that the two are neighbours and their children play together even do sleep overs. Other facts are that in July 2020, the plaintiff lost her marriage to another woman because of her careless mouth. Florence Manenga, 40, a marketeer, of John Lainge compound sued, Sharon Mutale, 38, a marketeer of the same locality for calling her a witch. Manenga told the court that when her marriage ended, Mutale celebrated with her other friend who told her that she did not deserve such a good man.
Manenga said, Mutale was heard by their mutual friend saying she had put something in her lotion which made her husband hate her and called her a witch. “Nkani ili so uyu Mutale enzo uza mzathu wininagu Joyce ati in ndine mfwiti elo ni thukana that’s why ba muna banga banini siya, manje ine nifuno ziba kuti evidence yau mwfiti wanga ilikuti,” Manenga said She added that even her fellow marketeers told her that Mutale was saying she was a witch that’s why she sold more than her friends. In her defence Mutale denied calling her a witch and that the only reason Manenga had brought her to court was because she had started seducing her husband. Mutale said she trusted Manenga for a long time because the two have been
friends for a long time but she was shocked when she noticed that after her marriage ended she started wearing short skirts whenever her husband is around. “Chamene chati leta kuno, ni issue yakuti uyu mzanga ine sininani vi kambeko vau mfwiti koma uyu afuna ka yamba chibeleshi kuli ba muna banga, ba muna banga ngati bali pa nyumba ndishi azambo bwela bwela mu ma mini kuti amuna bang aba mufune,” Mutale said. Magistrate Mubukwanu Matalak dismissed the case on the grounds that the key witness was not before the court. He said cases of witchcraft were difficult to pursue because often there was no evidence, and worse still, in this case it was hearsay and no actual words being told to the plaintiff.
Phiri said that on unknown day in august due to anger she started shouting in the compound without mentioning names and later reported to Mando’s son inlaw about the incident. “Nkani ili so ine nima gulisako moba, then ndine neba wa mwana wa aba amai Doreen Mando, so mwamuna wake ama gulako moba kuline,so iyo day nina dabwa ba security ba bwela kuni yofya ati bazani
pisha ngati sinileka ku gulisa moba, then ninakalipa nouza mwamuna wa Doreen then next aba ba Josephine bana bwela kuni uza ati ine ni nunka ku moyo,” Phiri said. Phiri added that Josephine said she had a very bad smell on her body which make men stay away from her and wanted compensation for such remarks. In her defence Josephine Mando denied ever telling
Phiri that she stinks instead she shouted randomly in the compound. Mando said the reason she shouted was because her daughter was terribly beaten by her husband because Phiri had told him lies. “Ine nina shout ache pa chipanda kaili mwana wanga ana bwela kunyumba ni ovimba na blood , after namu funsa ana Kamba ati ba muna bake ba mumenya, why ati amai Phiri bakamba ati ine ndiye nima mwesa ba muna banga (Doreen Mando) nidye pe ine manje mai wake nina kalipa no yenda che ku shouta.” In passing judgement Magistrate A. Michelo refused to qualify the case as a compensation issue and advised the two families to reconcile because it lacked proper evidence. The court added that Phiri must stop brewing the illegal vodka or she will one day be arrested for producing products not safe for human consumption.

TAILOR SUED OVER UNPAID CHILD FEES By EPHRAIM CEASAR.
A LUSAKA Garden House resident has dragged the father of her baby to Kanyama Local Court for failing to pay K500 child support as agreed. Mwape Musonda, 26, a student at City College, has sued the father of baby, Moffat Njobvu, 38, a tailor, of Kanyama west for failing to pay the agreed K500 monthly fee as child support. Musonda narrated before the court that in 2018, Njobvu had agreed to be paying K500 as child support monthly but since 2020 he has not given her any money
without proper reason. Musonda said Njobvu stopped her from going to court because he was a married man but agreed to be paying child support monthly. “When I gave birth in 2018 this man agreed to be supporting me and the child but later he changed and said since its just damage he will only support the child, I said ok no problem then my sister told me to go to court to have a written agreement upon hearing that he stopped me and said he will be paying K500 monthly child support,”said Musonda.
She added that there is a written document between her and Njobvu which obligates him to the K500 agreement of child support. Upon viewing the document, the court asked Nbjovu to defend himself from the matter and show why he was refusing to honour his side of the agreement. Njobvu denied refusing to pay the monthly child support saying he had continued to honour his promise because that’s his child. He said the problem was that every time the two had an argument Musonda, told him the child was not his and that one day the real fa-
ther would beat him. “I’m a learned man even if I’m a tailor, this child here is my flesh and blood, there is no way I can refuse to support her, the problem is that this lady has been saying very hurtful things towards me over the child, she is always angry at me as if I don’t tell her that I’m married that’s why I had stopped paying,” And magistrate Mubukwanu Matalaka told the two that there was a binding document in place and was signed in the presence of both families therefor the agreement would continue. The magistrate told Njobvu to continue paying the child support fees and that he was free to sue Musonda if he was not sure as to whether the child was his. The court also added that Musonda must come clean on who the real father of her child was or take a DNA test and stop bothering Mr. Nbjovu.

Steven Kapopo, 38 a businessman, told magistrate Betty Malupenga that he runs a grocery shop at Lusaka City market. Matalaka asked, Msumuko to say his side of the story and defend himself from such claims by his wife. Msumuko told the court that the reason he drinks too much alcohol is because he wasted over K10,000 trying to educate his wife but that she kept on failing. He said he wishes the money he spent on her was diverted to other things like building or helping his old mother in the village. MAN RAPES, IMPREGNATES STEPDAUGHTER
A
37-YEAR-OLD man from Rangemore suburb in Bulawayo who proposed love to his 15-year-old stepdaughter and was turned down has been arrested after he raped her on several occasions and impregnated her. A family insider who spoke to BMetro on condition of anonymity said the mother of the minor had left her in the care of her step- father when she visited her rural home. The source said sometime in July 2019 the stepfather proposed love to the minor but she turned his proposal down. After that the man hatched a plan to abuse the minor. Two days after the proposal while they were sleeping the paedophile called out the name of the minor prompting her to wake up. “He invited the minor to sleep with him in the same room. The un-
suspecting minor slept on the floor while he slept on the bed. During the night the man sneaked into her blankets and raped her once,” said the worried source. The source went on to say sometime in September last year while the minor’s mother had gone to college where she is pursuing her studies the man woke up during the night and tip-toed to a room where the 15-year-old was sleeping. “He got into her blankets and raped her once and after the act he returned to his bedroom,” said the source. The source said sometime in March this year the man left his wife at their rural home and when he arrived at their house at around 8pm he ordered the minor to take farm produce from the vehicle into the kitchen. “He grabbed her and raped her in
the car,” said the source. The source said on 30 August the complainant’s mother arrived from where she had gone to sell her stuff and she realised that the minor was pregnant. The source said she asked her who impregnated her and she dropped a bombshell revealing that she was impregnated by her stepfather. The mother reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the man. Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said: “We strongly urge parents or guardians never to leave their children in the care of a male relatives or any male because every man has a potential of raping. We also urge members of the public not to sweep such matters under the carpet but to make a police report as soon as possible.” - B-METRO
Granny throws child into 16-metre well IN a heart-rending incident a 67-year-old granny threw an 11-year-old child into a 16-metre deep well after she found her fetching water from her well at Norwood Farm in Gutu, Masvingo province. The incident that has put Eunice Shangwa in the firing line with villagers happened last week on Saturday. A source close to investigations said an 11-year-old girl went to fetch water at the farm in question with her younger sister aged three. “While they were fetching water Shangwa who is the owner of the well arrived and accused them of fetching water without her permission. The granny beat the 11-yearold with a stick all over the body,” said the source. After thrashing the minor, the source said, she threw her into the well. “The fuming granny lifted the child and threw her into the deep well and instructed
the younger sister to report to her parents that she had thrown her sister into the well,” said the source. The source said the child rushed home and informed her parents. Sensing danger the granny went into hiding. The girl’s parents informed other villagers who rushed to the well and saved the child from
the jaws of death. “Villagers rushed to the well and found the child crying inside the well. Luckily she was not submerged by the water and they saved her. She was rushed to Gutu Mission Hospital where she is being treated. She is complaining of painful ribs and knees,” said the source. Masvingo deputy police
spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dewa confirmed the incident: “We urge community members to value the sanctity of life and refrain from taking the law into their hands. We appeal to members of the public to assist us with information that could lead to the arrest of Shangwa.” - B-METRO
White university professor in US admits she has lied for years about being black A WHITE academic who specialises in African American history has admitted pretending to be black throughout her career. Jessica Krug, who is a professor at George Washington University, made the shocking confession in a online post made on Medium on Thursday. In the post titled ‘The Truth, and the Anti-Black Violence of My Lies’, she wrote: “To an es-
calating degree over my adult life, I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness.” The 38-year-old had previously described herself as an ‘unrepentant and unreformed
child of the hood’. But it has now been revealed that she attended the fee-paying exclusive Barstow school in Kansas City. She was described by her former classmates as ‘very political’ and is said to have identified as a ‘white, Jewish girl’ One of her former peers, who did not want to be named, told Mail
Online that Jessica boycotted prom and planned a flag burning while at the school which she graduated from in 1999. Anna Anderson, Jessica’s current neighbour in the Bronx, told the website the academic would call her ‘white trash’ and tell her she was ‘gentrifying the neighbourhood’ by going running.
Mum, 29, filmed carrying one-week-old baby in bag to take him ‘for a walk’
Stunned passers-by said the mum was 'singing a lullaby to her bag' in Kyiv, Ukraine, before she was stopped by the police. The mother said 'she put the baby into her bag because she did not have a pram'
BIZARRE footage shows a mother being stopped by police after she was seen carrying her one-week-old baby in a bag. The unnamed woman, 29, was criticised after she said she was taking her newborn boy “for a walk”. Shocked passers-by in Kyiv, Ukraine, said the mum was walking along the street and ‘singing a lullaby to her bag’. A witness told local media: ‘’The woman behaved weird and I started watching her. Then I heard a baby crying. The next moment, I realised the cry was coming from her bag. ‘’I approached her and asked if I could look in the bag. She said ‘no’ and hurried away. I reported the woman to the police.’’ The video filmed by an onlooker shows officers stopping the mother then pulling the baby out of her bag. The mother can be heard saying to cops: ‘’Leave him [the baby] alone. He is alive. He is fine.’’ However, some witnesses whose voices are heard in the background expressed concerns about the child’s well-
being. ‘He could suffocate in the bag,’’ a concerned woman said, while another commented: ‘’The child is wrapped in a winter jacket. He is all wet.’’ According to reports, the temperature was 30С (86 F) at the moment of the incident. The officers reportedly put the baby in the back seat of their car and called an ambulance. The child was taken to hospital and is now under constant medical monitoring, say local media. Police officer Maksim Kravchuk told: ‘’We looked into the woman’s bag and saw the newborn inside. ‘’We put the child into our car while we were waiting for an ambulance. ‘’The mother behaved aggressively toward us.’’ Explaining herself to cops, the mother said ‘she put the baby into her bag because she did not have a pram’. The woman, who has six children, also said ‘she recently came to Kyiv from the city of Odessa hoping to find a job’. She faces a fine for not fulfilling parental duties, police said. - MIRROR

MUSIC can be used as a tool that can bring many souls to Jesus, gospel artiste Chris Jimmy Sikwese has said. Born in Luanshya’s Mpatamato, Sikwese also known as JimmAfrika kick-started his music career under the name Vybo. JimmAfrika is a Christian enthusiast and strongly driven by scriptural values. He started doing music in 2009 and is now working on building and perfecting his craft. “Music is an art, it is life, I see no difference between music and breathing. I breath in rhythms and the Pumping action of the heart is called a beat.” JimmAfrika has worked with the likes of JB, Church Ulukuta, Bupe Cholwe, Kesia Diwa and Joy-Joy. “When I talk of my future in music, I don’t express it in heights because my success is in turning a soul to Christ.”he said. He has done different tracks and released a new single titled, “Teti Ndabe” produced by Church Ulukuta, which features Church himself and Milzic from Team Ulukuta. The song simply talks about how people pretend to be who they are not and later fail to maintain, but even with that, God has been faithful and has seen us through all issues. He said his song has been well received and it’s serving its purpose. “My music is not just a fun of singing but it is Ministry, Just as a pastor preaches, encourages and teaches on the pulpit, so do I in songs and Instruments. “Without music, I may not reach out to that one soul that needs to hear my voice to change,” he said.
Beyoncé donates US$1m to support black-owned businesses LONDON - Beyoncé is donating $1 milion to blackowned businesses in celebration of her birthday. The ‘Black Is King’ star turned 39 on Friday, and as an early birthday gift from the singer, she announced this week she plans to give the hefty sum to the National
Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP), to help support small black-owned businesses. Beyoncé made the donation through her BeyGOOD charity initiative, and announced the news in a statement on her website, which read: ‘’Proud to announce $1M in additional funds from Beyonce to help black-owned small businesses. Round two of funding opens this month with our partner, NAACP.’’ NAACP also released their own statement, in which they said they are ‘’proud to partner’’ with BeyGOOD, and revealed that the $1 million donation would split into grants
of $10 000 each. They said: ‘’NAACP Empowerment Programs is delighted to administer a meaningful program in partnership with BeyGOOD’s Black-Owned Small Business Impact Fund to assist our small business communities that have been directly impacted by recent events across the country. The grants in the amount of $10,000 will be offered to Black-owned small businesses in select cities to help sustain businesses during this time. The NAACP is proud to partner with BeyGOOD to help strengthen small businesses and to ensure economic empower-
ment for Black businesses.’’ Beyonce’s latest charitable deed comes after she recently reached out to fellow pop star Katy Perry, following the birth of her daughter Daisy Dove. The ‘Halo’ hitmaker sent Katy - who has her daughter with her fiancé Orlando Bloom - a $250 bouquet of flowers to celebrate her first foray into motherhood. Taking to her Instagram Stories, Katy shared a snap of the bouquet and wrote: ‘’Ily [I love you] @beyonce’’ She also snapped the gift card, which read: ‘’Congratulations to the new addition to your family! Beyonce.’’

MUSICIAN Kantu Siachinjili famously called Kan2 has decided to quit music to concentrate on her professional life. “I want to take this time to thank everyone that has supported my music career. My musical journey has been nothing but amazing because you all cheered me on even when times were hard. You may not know this, but music healed my soul,” she said in her farewell message. “To help mend broken hearts and strengthen people through my music has been a great blessing, one I will always treasure. Unfortunately, everything must come to an end. I’ve decided to give way to other things in my life and so I have to say goodbye.” The artiste who also recently bade farewell to spinsterhood, announced last week that she is doing her last album as an exit project. “I will however put out one beautiful album as a gift to those who have loved and supported my music. It will be a little something for you to remember me by. I will forever cherish y’all,” she said. Her “gift” album is titled “Breathe”. “Life is a journey and along the way we make mistakes. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, we lose and sometimes we win. We get our hearts broken, we cry, we heal. We are all fragile beings and deserve to be loved despite our flaws. But through it all, we should never forget to ‘Breathe’,” she advised in a bid to explain the album. However, fans and music followers have welcomed Kantu's decision with mixed feelings. Others believe she will be back sooner than later while some feel she needs her moment to advance her professional career. Musician and former radio DJ Danny Peddle wishes Kantu well as he believes some careers like Law do not really mix well with music. “We have seen the likes of Kachaka, Kanji and now Kantu move this direction.Wishing you the very best Kantu and may your 'last' project be a bomb so that it pulls you back,” said Danny describing Kantu as an amazing talent. “Indeed this sector will miss your beautiful voice, God bless you girl. It's time for you to go get them and hope we see you sitting on that powerful panel of judges,” added Danny.

27-year-old Zindaba Mwanza a former television personality famously called ZiZi recently graduated in Finland with a masters in international economics. Zindaba began his early television career as one of ZNBC Kids TV presenters at the age of 11. He later on joined Muvi TV at the invitation of Brian Mwale and the late Augustin Lungu. While there, he produced and presented youth programs including Zkids news and Teen Fusion. After leaving Zambia, ZiZi got his bachelors degree in Cyprus. In 2016, his team won the regional finalist position at the Hult Prize Clinton Global Initiative competition in Dubai. This was a universities global startup competition. He later became an assistant regional marketing manager at the Cyprus international University then moved to Finland where he worked with UNICEF Finland as a regional team leader while pursuing his masters. ZiZi’s international successes led him to his current role working at Mercedes Benz in the United States. Zindaba has also received leadership and achievement awards in Zambia, Italy, Cyprus and Finland. In 2018, for example, he represented the Finnish University of Oulu at the United Nations Youth Assembly in New York where he received yet another global youth ambassador award. The Nation Lifestyle caught up with Zindaba who shares more on his dedication to academic excellence in the following interview. 1. What motivated you to stay dedicated to education? Even though I come from a humble background, My parents always encouraged us to pursue education. My immediate young brother Kwame is studying medicine at CBU and will be completing his studies next year my sister Bessie is in her third year of Law school at UNZA, my two young brothers Lizwe and Shuko are following their passion too training to be professional soccer players while at school and our youngest sister also Siphiwe also wants to study medicine after school. Our father is an intellectual and our mother is the most hardworking woman I know. So that combination enabled us to take school seriously. 2. How did you acquire your education?
Both my bachelors and master’s degrees have been financed by scholarships and My parents were financially supportive during my studies. 3. What prompted you to study in Europe not Zambia? I wanted to get international exposure because I was aiming for a global career. So, I knew I had to seek opportunities abroad in order to start that journey. Plus, the scholarship offer helped me decide. 4. What do you hope to do now? I’ve gotten some job offers to work with some companies in the US and Europe but I am looking into doing work that can benefit my country. My Master’s thesis was a research on the role that external debt burden plays in economic development for a country like Zambia. Alongside my Finnish Professor, Marko Korhonen, I explored possible solutions to the debt financing challenges that Zambia faces today. I want to do more work on that as I continue with other professional engagements. 5. What stories of encouragement do you have for Zambian youth? My words of encouragement to my fellow youth in Zambia are: - Don't give up on your dreams - Keep pushing - G e t up early - Work hard I read a lot of books. Young people need to develop the habit of reading selfhelp books. Check the people you
spend the most time with. En-
sure that you can learn something valuable from them and they can learn something valuable from you. When I was in university, my closest friends were Salim Mbarouk, Jane Nakasamu, Semba Kamuliwo, Chipala Chimboni, and Natasha Hara. Salim is a Tanzanian friend who is now the CEO of Prefab housing in his country. Jane is the CEO and President of Greenbelt Energy which is a green energy company in Zambia. All my other friends mentioned are accomplished professionals in their industries. When I was lagging behind my friends would call me and remind me to get serious because we have goals that needed to be met. Get a mentor, it doesn't have to be someone close to you, you can read about them, watch their videos or listen to them on radio, find someone you admire follow that person closely and replicate what they do. I am sure you've noticed so many names being dropped in my journey and that’s because I’m who I am today because many people who believed in me.

NCREASINGLY, the Ministry of Tourism and Arts has been encouraging local communities and chiefdoms to set up community game ranches. Simalaha Community Conservancy in Mwandi Western Province, the country’s first successful community-based conservation initiative, has been identified as a model that can be replicated in other regions.
There are a number of benefits that can come from a community-led approach to managing and protecting natural resources like wildlife. Community conservancies allow chiefdoms to take ownership of their own destiny, as they make it possible for indigenous Zambians to participate in game ranching. Communities can partner with private companies to open safari lodges for local and foreign tourists or to provide live animals and meat for sale. In a 2013 report for the Wildlife Producers Association of Zambia, Dr Peter Lindsey estimated that game ranching, crocodile farming and the game capture and trading industries have a combined turnover of approximately USD15.7 million per annum. The high demand for legal wildlife products like game meat, combined with the fact that commercial game ranching is yet to take off in Zambia, means there is potential for community conservancies to reap maximum benefits and contribute to the creation of a sustainable wildlife economy. Conservancies can help reduce destructive poaching and the illegal bushmeat trade which is a major problem that causes wildlife declines and undermines economies and livelihoods. One of the challenges with the current model of conservation in Zambia is that many communities feel wildlife belongs to Government. Community conservancies can change this since local communities will own wildlife and directly benefit from it. They will want to conserve it and be more inclined to report poachers as poaching would be seen as stealing from the community. This is exactly what Namibia is witnessing in its conservancies, where it is reported that less than a third

the case of conservancies, this means training community members to be wildlife scouts and to carry out regular patrols to monitor wildlife.
Tourism and other related activities can also create jobs and revenue. Community conservancies can therefore create meaningful employment and contribute to improving household incomes and livelihoods. Employment creation and other financial returns that local communities can generate from conservancies can help to increase their resilience to droughts and other effects of climate change. This is particular important since Zambia has been experiencing unpredictable weather patterns lately, with adverse effects on agriculture. Community conservancies can also promote a sense of ownership of wildlife among community members, which is an incentive for communities to also take ownership of conservation efforts and to manage wildlife and other natural resources sustainably. The best way to safeguard Zambia’s wildlife will be to empower as many communities as possible. In this regard, community owned game ranches and conservancies are a great idea because they prove that we can use conservation as a tool to fight poverty while also helping to conserve our precious wildlife resources.
