on the cover...

We threw it back a few years for the cover after seeing that the Michigan Holstein Association has had a publication for more than seven decades. Originally called Holstein Michigander, we decided to honor that longevity with a cover from 1949. In those days Carnation Perfection Triumph and Montvic Rag Apple Chief were popular sires, linebreeding was a good thing and a high production average was 13,000 lbs of milk. We welcome Indiana breeders again this year with a subscription to the magazine and thank them for their advertising support. This issue is filled with sale ads, annual meeting activities and spring and summer show info. Have a great and productive spring!

From the MHA President Reed ’s Ramblings

Hello there,

Having just been elected president of the Michigan Holstein Association on Sat., Feb. 11., Melissa Hart informed me my first article for this magazine needed to be completed by Tues., Feb. 14. I know for some this would be simple task. For me writing has never come easy, but thank the Lord for spell check, and a few editors who slapped some lipstick on this pig. (I am sure the nuns from my childhood at St. Paul Catholic School are looking down on me and laughing about this.)

My parents, Isabel and Earl Reed, bought a farm in 1948 where they milked 20 grade cows and raised nine kids. After high school I purchased my first registered cows—it wasn’t much but it was a start. My wonderful wife, Elaine, and I raised four great children. When they were young, our friend, Michele (Gilna) Lennamen, involved them in the Dairy Go-Getters 4-H club. Our family has been showing in county, state, and national shows ever since.

My first term as president began with a successful Michigan Holstein Association Annual Meeting, held at Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mt. Pleasant. The structure of the annual meeting with the addition of a virtual sale and consignments was new this year and I thought it turned out great!

The activities kicked off on Friday, Feb. 10 with our first virtual sale, put on by Chad Kreeger and his crew. Our sales committee, lead by George Bush, provided consignments. Michigan Dairy Cattle News Editor, Melissa Hart, dug through our archives

to display the MHA’s old magazines and photographs. It was great to see young and old alike put their phones down and look through these historic documents. Of course, the beer was cold and that was pretty good also.

The following morning began with a very nice breakfast and a thought provoking talk from Kim Bremmer of Wisconsin on being an informed and involved producer. The presentation was followed by the Michigan Jersey Cattle Club and Michigan Holstein Association meetings. The highlight of the MHA meeting was honoring our friends during the awards ceremony. This year we had the pleasure of honoring Max Dunseth with the Distinguished Service Award. Joe Kulhawick gave Max a nice introduction and Max offered some introspective thoughts on his years as a MHA representative. Max then presented our Master Breeder Award winner, Gary Wieber, and the Wayne Webster Young Breeder Award winner, Adam Preston.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this annual meeting a success! Please feel free to contact me or any of the board members and let us know what you think.

Looking at the year ahead, we have an outstanding young board that wants to “moove” this organization forward. The committees are invigorated and are proposing many new ideas. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to work in this environment.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone for electing me to this position. I thank my predecessor, Brent Moyer, for his time and dedication over the past three years. His innovative ideas have been a driving force in many successful endeavors, such as the Golden Ticket fundraiser and numerous others. I would also like to thank Suzanne Tuttila for her 20 years of dedicated service to the Michigan Holstein Association. Lastly, I want to thank those that have come before us and put us in such a great position, both structurally and financially.

I don’t know what Sister Rosemary thought about this column, but it was better than getting whacked with her ruler.

Thanks again and until next time, may the sun shine upon you and the wind be at your back.

STEVE REED President, Michigan Holstein Association

From Your President Michigan Junior Holstein

As we move into the springtime, the Michigan Junior Holstein members are excited as ever for spring show season and all the fun events and opportunities we have planned!

The junior board of directors just completed our sixth annual Holiday Cheese Sale and had another successful fundraiser, selling just under 350 total boxes. We added some new improvements and options to our sale and it went very well. We would like to give a special thank you to everyone who purchased from our sale and for their continued support of the Michigan Holstein juniors.

We recently held our spring basket silent auction at the Holstein and Jersey annual meetings. Thank you to everyone that bid on items, we appreciate all of the contributions! We also had a group of junior board members attend and enjoyed listening to the speaker and taking in everything from the MJCC and MHA meet-

ings. Additionally, we look forward to seeing juniors in the show ring at the spring show again! MJHA will also be hosting a spring showmanship practice before the spring show for any juniors to fine tune their showmanship skills

It is also that time of year to start thinking about the National Holstein Convention. The convention will be hosted in Lexington, KY from June 23-27 this year. If a junior would like to attend and participate in a contest, MJHA helps in covering the cost of the trip. If you are interested in attending and competing in a contest, please contact a MJHA board member or myself at adalee.thelen@gmail. com. The deadlines for these contests are April 1 and May 1.

Be sure to like and follow our Facebook page to stay up to date on all the Michigan Junior Holstein Association’s future opportunities. We are looking forward to the upcoming events we have planned and are even more excited to see you there!

Thank you for your time,

NEW GENETIC OFFERINGS FROM HOLSTEIN MARKETPLACE SIRES

“By breeders, for breeders” is more than just a slogan for Holstein Marketplace Sires. It encompasses what the program stands for – keeping Registered Holstein breeders at the heart. Holstein Marketplace Sires aims to provide breeders with a way to easily share genetics from their bulls with other producers nationwide.

Marketplace Sires highlights a diverse lineup of elite bulls for high GTPI, balanced type, and increased components, who trace back to strong cow families. The program aims to provide superior genetics while simultaneously showcasing the phenomenal breeders they come from and providing them with a way to retain full ownership of their animals.

Holstein Marketplace Sires has recently added two new genetic options to their lineup, including 712HO01020 Genosource Gameday Hype-ET. Hype comes from an all-star maternal line including Miss America, Shauna, and Missy, and is +3021 for GTPI, +1080 for NM, +1531 for M, and +175 for CFP.

“Hype is an elite sire for production and components, while having exceptional type and udders and maintaining adequate frame size. He has an exciting sire stack and a full pedigree that directs back to the Rudolph Missy family,” shares bull owner Jeff Jauquet of Jauquet Holsteins Dairy in Pulaski, Wisconsin.

Another bull in the lineup is 712HO01019 K-Star AftermathET, owned by a long-time Holstein Association USA Herd of Excellence, Koester Dairy Inc., in Dakota, Illinois. Aftermath boasts stats of +2992 GTPI, +100 F, +55 P, +902 M +0.4 DPR with tremendous type at +1.84 PTAT and +1.95 UDC backed by 10 generations of VG or EX!

The Koester family notes, “Aftermath is a great udder improver with a modern sire stack, super components, positive DPR, and moderate frame. The first three maternal dams behind Aftermath have all been stars in our herd, not only classifying great but rising to the top of our herd for their fat and protein production!”

Another popular genetic option at Holstein Marketplace Sires

MANDI KIPP

is 712HO01018 Golden-Oaks Tango-Red, the #1 PTAT Red bull in the US. Tango traces back to one of the most famous red cows in the world, Tang, whose maternal line includes Tobi Ex-96 3E and Tina EX-95 2E.

“Tango is true to our breeding program with his breed-leading type numbers, combined with his style and physical makeup,” says Lucas Moser from Golden Oaks. We feel Tango can add a lot to the type side of a herd and has great potential to make future show heifers and cows.”

These outstanding genetic options, along with several others, are available for purchase through me, your regional sales representative, or online at www.holsteinusa.com/marketplacesires.

Michigan Holstein Association ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES

February 11, 2023 Mt. Pleasant, Michigan

Meeting called to order at 11:01 am by President Brent Moyer. It was noted that the call to meeting was in the Winter MDCN. Brent thanked Kim Bremmer for her Ag Inspiration presentation this morning. Brent introduced Mandi Kipp from HAUSA and Greg Lavan from AJCC. Brent announced that MHA hired a new Executive Secretary in October 2022 and introduced Carrie Delong.

The 2022 Annual Meeting minutes are printed in the meeting booklet for membership to review. John Lehman made a motion to accept the minutes as presents, supported by Jess Jakubik and motion passed.

Financial reports were printed in the magazine. The totals were erroneously miscalculated. Motion made my John Lehman and supported by Drew Rupprecht to accept the financials presented with corrections. Motion passed. It was highlighted that the Golden Ticket helped offset funding for the summer show.

Adalee Thelan gave the report for MJHA. They also conducted a silent auction for baskets during last evenings sale and this morning breakfast. Winners were announced prior to the start of this meeting.

Melissa Hart gave an update on the MDCN. She first thanked Kelly Raterink and Malissa Reed (membership committee) for their work on planning the annual meeting. Highlights include that Indiana Holstein Association is providing subscriptions to their members and we are seeing an increase in breeder advertising from Indiana members. Melissa announced the Jersey Cow of the Century and Holstein Cow of the Decade winners. Brent thanked Melissa for her hard work in making the MDCN a successful magazine.

Membership report was printed in the magazine. There is a vacancy for Vice President and three open director seats on the board. It was noted that Allison Schafer resigned from the MHA board effective January 1, 2023. Kelly Raterink and Lauren Siver’s director seats are up for election.

The nominating committee presented the following nominations: Jessica Jakubik for Vice President, Kelly Raterink and Lauren Siver for directors at large. Nominations from the floor were opened. Joe Kuhlhawick was nominated for Vice President, Ethan Haywood and Moss McCauley were nominated for directors’ seats. Motion was made to close vice president and director nominations, supported, and passed. Motion was made to nominate Steve Reed as President and vote by unanimous ballot, supported and passed.

Voting for Vice President and directors were completed by ballot and results as follows: Vice -President - Jessica Jakubik. Directors at Large – Lauren Siver and Kelly Raterink. Ethan Haywood was voted in as Director at Large to finish out Allison Schafer’s term. Motion made to destroy ballots, supported, and passed.

Steve thanked Brent for his past three years of leadership as President of MHA. Brent’s forward thinking and vision has resulted in successful changes for MHA.

Sale Report: Brent thanked George Bush, Dave Bennett, and Lauren Siver for working on the online sale that was held last night. Chad Kreeger stated that the high seller was $4025 and the 39 lots

averaged $2614. There were registered bidders from over a dozen states.

Brent asked the membership what direction they would like the sale committee to go with future sales. Much discussion followed that included the following.

• Having a good mix of group lots and individual show prospects

• A team to assist consigners with videos/picture editing for online sales and advertising

• Having a tag sale

• Online sale pictures and videos need to have clean animals in a clean area (not meaning clipped)

• Producers need an outlet for cattle, group lots of 8-12 work well.

Nicole Vanderploeg and Lauren Siver gave the Show Committee report. They announced the spring and summer shows for 2023 and presented the All-Michigan Holstein and All-Michigan Jersey awards.

By-law changes that were sent out in January with membership renewals were presented.

The first change presented was a new amendment. In the event of MHA dissolving, an endowment through Dairy Memorial Scholarship at MSU will be created in the name of MHA for students with dairy interest. Discussion followed and a motion by John Lehman and supported by Tom Atherton to add to the amendment without a new dairy organization being formed. Motion passed.

Motion made by Drew Rupprecht and supported by Lauren Siver to add the following amendment to the by-laws: In the event of MHA dissolving without a new dairy organization being formed, an endowment through Dairy Memorial Scholarship at MSU will be created in the name of MHA for students with dairy interest. Motion passed.

Motion made by Drew and supported by Eric to change the dues by-law to increase the base membership rate to $50. Motion passed.

Joe Kuhlhawick presented Max Dunseth with the Distinguished Service Award.

Max Dunseth presented Wayne Webster Outstanding Young Breeder Award to Adam Preston. Max also presented the Master Breeder Award to Gary Wieber.

Beth Rupprecht presented Ethan Haywood with the Jersey Outstanding Young Breeder Award.

Mandi Kipp announced herd awards and gave an update from HAUSA.

Meeting adjourned at 1:15 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

7 Spring 2023 Michigan Dairy Cattle News

From the President’s Pen Indiana Holstein Association

Greetings Fellow Holstein Breeders, I trust you have made it through the Christmas blizzard cold blast. Rough couple days but we all survived. I may be premature and naive, but I like to believe spring has started to peek its head around the corner.

I will remind you we have a new Secretary/ Treasurer Shawn Zollman. I appreciate his being willing to serve and welcome the vision, and the thoughts and ideas he is bringing to the position and board.

If you missed it and I believe too many of you did, our Indiana State Holstein annual meeting was on January 21st at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. It was nice to see everyone and a chance to regain our focus on state association activities. Your new association officers are as follows President Roger Hibschman, Vice President Doug Wicker, Secretary/ Treasurer Shawn Zolman, Executive Committee Member Jordon Eby, Executive Committee Chair and Past President Greg Peters.

Our juniors are trying to get geared up and field a junior and senior quiz bowl team at the National Convention in Kentucky. I wish them well and am super excited about all this energy. Rich Nisen is heading the virtual coaching duties with Denise Settles organizing the extra arrangements.

Mark your calendars for the State Holstein Sale on April 29th at the Whitley County Fairgrounds at Columbia City. Micah Matlock, Gene Settles, Greg Peters, Doug Wicker, and Rich Nisen are the committee members and contact people for this special event.

State junior and senior Holstein Show is June 8th and June 10th respectively, also at Whitley County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds will be open for tack to arrive on June 6th. Also on June 7th we will have the privilege of hosting the State FFA and 4-H judging contest. This is a cool thing as it puts us in contact with a great group of kids, parents, and schools. It also allows us to compensate financially as well. So please be generous and agreeable when asked if your cattle can be in the judging contest on the 7th. Any and all paid members are encouraged to attend and participate.

As we head into the 2023 calendar year, I am preparing a list of committees and looking to involve our State Holstein board members, association members, and Holstein enthusiasts on these committees. Many hands create better outcomes so be prepared to roll up your sleeves and dig in to share the load.

If you have any questions or concerns, I am always available.

WHAT IS THE MHA GOLDEN TICKET OPPORTUNITY?

It is an opportunity you do not want to miss! This is your chance to help us celebrate and promote the breeders in Michigan and their high-quality calves. Proceeds will benefit our junior and show programs.

Want to be involved?

MHA members can enter their Registered calves born 09/01/21-04/30/23. All breeds owned by paid MHA state members are eligible. State members can nominate a heifer using the form below. All entries must be received by May 1, 2023. A Nomination Fee of $25 covers GTO and All Michigan Show entry. Entries received before March 15, 2023 (deadline for spring show entries) are eligible to show in the 2023 spring show and recognized as a nominee. Owner is responsible for sending entry into office. When entering your calf, you are committing to the calf potentially being selected as the winner. Committee reserves the right to refuse any nomination.

There will be 125 lottery tickets printed, and 123 of them will be sold for $100 each. The remaining two tickets will be auctioned off to benefit the Michigan junior programs. This auction will be held at the Michigan Dairy Expo in July and the tickets

auctioned off will automatically be in the top 12 drawing. When and where will the drawing be held?

The drawing will be held on July 23 at our 2023 All-MI AllBreed Summer Show prior to the selection of the Junior Champion. Annual MeetingsThrowing It Back for

After

The Michigan Holstein Association (MHA) and the Michigan Jersey Cattle Club (MJCC) revisited a former format for their annual gathering when they met at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant for an All-Breeds sale and joint annual meetings on February 10-11, 2023. It was a standing room only crowd as they gathered to honor breeders and conduct the business of the associations.

On Friday evening, a capacity crowd gathered for the Michigan Holstein AllBreeds Sale that was held online and garnered an average of $2614 on 39 lots with a gross of $101,982. The high seller was lot 3 at $4025, a first choice of four September 2023 Unstopabull calves out of Luck-E Jordy Kricket-Red-

ET EX-94 EEEEE. She is a member of the 2022 All-American Red & White Produce of Dam and the Grand Champion of the MidEast Fall National Red & White Junior Show and was consigned by Daniel Olson of Lena, WI. This sale generated bids from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, New York, California, Iowa and Kentucky and was managed by the Michigan Holstein Association and Kreeger & Associates, LLC.

Saturday morning kicked off with breakfast and speaker Kim Bremmer of Ag Inspirations. Bremmer spoke about the importance of producers knowing their facts and making their voice heard in an age of misinformation

about American agriculture.

After 30 years of service to the area as the Holstein Association, USA sales representative, Max Dunseth retired and was honored with the Distinguished Service Award from MHA. Gary Wieber of Fowler was awarded the MHA Master Breeder Award while Adam Preston of Quincy was honored with the Wayne Webster Outstanding Young Breeder award. THIS IS A SYSTEM THAT HAS DEFINITELY PAID FOR ITSELF

“I believe CowManager has helped profitability in a couple of ways. On the nutrition side, if we see a ration that the cows don’t react to like we thought they should right away, and we see a drop in eating or rumination, we can make a change pretty quick. Also, with cows that show early signs of sickness, instead of them going off milk, we are able to catch them right away and keep their production and health going well. This is a system that’s definitely paid for itself. You can see it pretty easily just looking at records year-over-year on treatments, sick cows and cows leaving the herd.”

From the Jersey Desk

Michigan Jersey Cattle Club

We recently met in Mt Pleasant for our annual meeting. This year we partnered with Michigan Holstein Association and offer a stand alone annual meeting featuring an online sale with social hour, a guest speaker, and an integrated annual meeting. We appreciate MHA work and forethought in planning this successful event.

The sale featured 12 jersey cattle offered up by our members. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the jerseys will come back to MJCC to help us support future opportunities for our members.

We welcomed Ethan Haywood to the board. Ethan is a bright young breeder who has a keen eye for good Jersey cattle and has helped his farm focus on breeding for high genomic animals. He’s hoping to make an appearance with some cattle at upcoming shows to try his hand at showing. Welcome Ethan!

Lauren Siver, a familiar face to many, has taken the helm as

989-640-6913

Vice President as Allison Schafer stepped down to focus on her farm. Thank you, Allison, for your service to the board.

Last summer our secretary/treasurer resigned. At the beginning of the year, the MJCC board decided in order to maintain our strong working relationship with MHA we would utilize the same secretary/treasurer they had hired. Please welcome Carrie Delong as our acting secretary/treasurer.

We are looking forward to winter ending and whirlwind of shows and sales beginning.

As always feel free to reach out to myself or anyone on the board if you have ideas of ways we should be engaged as a club. Or if you ever have questions. Have a blessed spring.  Beth

The board voted to ask Carrie Delong to be their Executive Secretary of which she agreed.

Advantage Livestock, LLC Delivers Benefits in Barn, Show Ring

Sarah Dillon of Southern Michigan was intrigued when she first saw exhibitors administering MagnaWave treatments at dairy, beef and swine shows. “I had to learn more,” she said.

MagnaWave treatments have been around since the 1970s, developed and first used by NASA to relieve pain and maintain muscle and bone density in astronauts. The therapeutic magnetic fields deliver relaxation and healing without medicine or the poke of a needle. The equine industry was an early adopter of the technology within the livestock industry; however its benefits are rapidly being observed in other species, including use for humans among chiropractors and holistic medicine practitioners.

Dillon noticed the visible relief and freedom of movement an animal gained, often after only one treatment. “Before and after results are remarkable,” she said. “Maybe they got banged up on the trail-

er, or during loading and unloading. They may be moving from standing on concrete to standing on a pack at a show, and it just disrupts their system. The whole change not only disrupts the muscular system, but a lot of time, digestion and appetite, too.”

MagnaWave treatments can help with overall wellness - and Dillon has personal experience to verify results. After treating a heifer prior to a recent show, she said, “I’ve never had an animal put on a nicer fill.” The results she has seen through observation, training and use of the equipment have been both consistent and positive.

Sharing the benefits to other livestock producers is her goal through Advantage Livestock, LLC. Whether it is for show-ring purposes or as an avenue to restore health and vigor to an animal that never leaves the farm, she is excited to help all livestock owners relieve suffering in the animals under their care.

MagnaWave processes go far beyond the show ring. Treatments can help break up mastitis tissue and relieve cows with udder edema, restore normal mobility in calves born through traumatic dystocia and even restore vigor in some downed-cow cases.

Dillon is a certified and insured MagnaWave PEMF practitioner, having completed hours of training and practice. Her service area includes Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, and she can also rent or sell MagnaWave machines. Off-season services include treatments to build larger ribcages, and pre-show services may be useful in adjusting loin issues to correct stride and gait, treat injuries and increase feed intake.

The Advantage Livestock, LLC off-season schedule is quickly filling up. Call her for an appointment at 517-398-1521, contact her on Facebook through www.facebook.com/sarah.polingdillon or email her at poseycreekfarms@gmail.com.
