religious piety and impiety, people have enjoyed straddling society’s boundaries. The most popular theory about the ‘modern’ April Fools’ Day is that it began to take shape in late 16th century France. At that time, there was a switch to the Gregorian Calendar under Charles IX. Prior to this there had been a New Year’s week (March 25thApril1st), and under the Gregorian system, New Year’s Day fell on January 1st. As with any change (shhh no-one mention Brexit) there was some resistance, and many people stubbornly refused to accept the new system, continuing to celebrate New Year on April 1st. The origins of April Fools’ Day are lost way back in time but like many traditions it probably has a number of historical roots. There was certainly a Roman festival called Hilaria which took place around the time of the spring equinox. There was also a Medieval ‘Feast of Fools’ although that took place at the beginning of the year. Throughout history there seems to be a tradition of transgressing boundaries during such celebrations: whether male and female, low class and high class,

These people were ridiculed and labelled ‘fools’ by the general populace and were often the butt of jokes and pranks. They were known as poisson d’avril, or April fish, possibly because a naïve young fish is easily caught. Over the years the custom of prank-playing spread to the general population and eventually to Britain, where schoolboy pranks are still the order of the day, so watch out! By Tom Hancock

How safe are your online interactions? Remember these five tips:

It’s easy to share our lives with the world today. It only takes a few clicks to share those special moments with family and friends. Social media has been a lifeline for many during the pandemic. But the Information we share may end up being available to a far wider group than our immediate social circle, and with hundreds of millions of users online, unfortunately some of these people may have sinister agendas. By sharing information about our lives, we offer potential criminals the opportunity to gather useful information about us. Even information which seems harmless may be a useful to criminals looking to perpetrate a scam.

Friendships - When accepting friend requests be cautious. Do you know whether their profile is real, or could it be fake? Manage your privacy settings – Only share information with people in your network. Check the settings regularly in case there are any changes. Never divulge personal information - Be suspicious of anyone who asks you for your information that may be used to identify you, such as a social security number. Change your passwords frequently - . Choose a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. It’s best to use different passwords for each account. Close old accounts - Don’t risk leaving personal data in an old account. Close accounts that you don’t use and delete as much personal information from them as possible. By Kate McCarthy

That’ll be a NO then! I meet lots of people who find themselves overloaded, or in uncomfortable situations because they find it very hard to say “no” to people around them. I bet you know someone who takes on more than they’re physically or mentally capable of from time to time and then feels angry or frustrated at the person that they feel overloaded them. You’ll find these people in most workplaces… often demonstrating what’s called passive aggressive behaviour …you can recognise them by the ‘tuts’ they utter… the eye rolls… the complaining behind the bosses backs (but never to their faces). This type of person feels that other people should somehow magically know what is reasonable for them to take on and not to ever put them in a position where they might have to use the word they recoil from … the ‘NO’ word. For many people this word appears to represent confrontation and challenge.. why is that? As with all behaviours that cause us distress as grown-ups the root of resistance to the ‘no’ word is usually in childhood. If you were raised in a home where children were ‘seen and not heard’ then it’s hardly surprising that to express an opinion, or to disobey an instruction was indeed seen as confrontational. Children brought up in this way often end up at extremes of the spectrum: either perfecting strong minded, even argumentative attitudes to people in around them, especially those in authority or at the other extreme, become totally submissive, unable to stand up for themselves or exercise their right to have an opinion. The reality is that everyone, no matter what their upbringing, can say no if the request

made of them is outrageous enough. It’s a fine balance between the degree of discomfort we’ll feel by refusal compared to the discomfort felt by carrying out the request. And where this balance lies for one person who feels like they have a right to say no will be in a very different place than for the person for whom refusal is extremely uncomfortable. Let’s look at an example. Say you live reasonably close to an airport and a close friend asks if you would give them a lift to catch a plane… if you were able to say yes, you would wouldn’t you? But what about if it was a round trip of more than an hour and their plane was at 7am and you had to be at work for 9am? You may feel that this is not a reasonable request for a friend to make, but whether you do or don’t, some people will feel able to say “no” and others will create a silly amount of stress for themselves by doing the journey, often grumbling to themselves about how difficult it is. A helpful strategy if you would like to feel able to exercise your right to say ‘no’ more often is to try the “no, but..” approach. This allows you to feel like you’re helping without having to just roll over when someone asks you .. It’s simple and in the example I’ve used here, sounds like, “no I’m not able to take you at that time, but I can give you the number of a great airport taxi firm that we’ve used before..”, or maybe,”I can’t take you, but I am able to pick you up..”. You are demonstrating that you want to help in whatever way IS reasonable for you. Next time someone makes a request that you feel is unreasonable, notice how you feel about the prospect of refusing it and maybe you could try countering with a “no….BUT….”.

We have seen a real difference in the comments from our parents between the first lockdown reactions and the second one! We are seeing many more parents and grandparents calling in to arrange a free assessment for their children during this second lockdown and, as always, we ask them why they believe it necessary for Kip to help their child at this time. By far the most responses include parents noticing something specific their child is finding difficult, like fractions, and also a bit more awareness that the child’s academic level seems lower than they thought. They can see for themselves that the levels have slipped back in academic ability, confidence and concentration. For the first time parents had to be teachers and couldn’t help but be much more aware of progress and the difficulties whilst doing so.

them and often just lean across and help each other with the little problems. Secondly, interest in doing the work is reported as getting noticeably harder to achieve. Many parents said that motivation was low, despite much more targeted work from teachers, and that they were finding they needed to negotiate with their children. ‘You do school work for an hour then you can watch TV or play on the computer.’ Thirdly, they could see the lack of motivation first hand. They noticed that the level of concentration was down from the first lockdown, with the child being very easily distracted so work took much longer to complete.

So how is this second lockdown so different from the first?

We start with a free assessment so we can tailor their individual plans exactly to their learning needs and styles. This forms the basis for an individual learning plan for each child. We use a mix of one to one support and independent learning time and include structure, pace and challenge to the lessons we give. We find that combination improves concentration and selfesteem. Immediate feedback of their success gives the students confidence and a positive attitude to errors. Helping them to achieve their potential is our aim!

Firstly, parents noted that during the first lockdown their children would settle down to work set by their teachers and do it by themselves. It even allowed working parents a little time to get some of their own work done! The children would come and ask if they got stuck but basically they were still in the classroom mode of having a go by themselves first. It is all about confidence. During this second lockdown, parents reported that their children wanted them to sit next to them, help them with everything and check that they were ‘doing it right’. They reported a significant lack of confidence to just ’have a go’. Many children were looking for constant reassurance as they feared they were ‘not as clever’ as their friends. In the classroom most children are aware of who is doing what around

So what can we do at Kip?

International Jazz Day - April 30th

International Jazz Day brings together schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz. Jazz began in the early twentieth century in New Orleans, in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The port of New Orleans meant the area was a melting pot of different nationalities and their musical influences: Spanish folk music, French military band music, Ragtime, European ballroom dance music, and Blues music all had an impact on the birth of Jazz. Jazz wasn’t written down in the same way as classical music; the styles and tunes evolved as they were passed on by ear. Black musicians in particular, were for the most part not classically trained, and began to express themselves through jazz. These musically agile instrumentalists and singers improvised around a main melody, often the popular folk and blues tunes of the era, creating a rich and exciting new blend of sound.

Although the ‘Jazz Age’ was in the 1920s, jazz never went away, it evolved through various incarnations. Talented soloists like Louis Armstrong pushed jazz in the direction of virtuosic improvisers, weaving their music around each other. Swing was a smoother, more easy-listening sound, popularised by the pianist and composer Duke Ellington. This was followed in the 40s and 50s by the Latin influences of Dizzy Gillespie, who collaborated with other musicians to bring jazz into the mainstream. Charlie Parker pioneered modern jazz (be-bop) which challenged many listeners with its complex experimentations in rhythm and harmony. Miles Davis on the other hand developed a more gentle, understated style. Free jazz ignored all the previous rules and constraints on harmony and structure which many people disliked. During the past 50 years jazz evolution has accelerated through jazz fusion – which fuses jazz solos with other musical styles - and acid jazz, which draws on soul, funk, disco and hip-hop. Well known pioneering acid jazz groups include 'Jamiroquai', and ‘The Brand-New Heavies'.

COMPUTER TIP Current Scams Scams are a really easy way for rogues to try and get your money and here are a few recent ones that are circulating. An automated phone call from Amazon asks you to confirm you’ve just ordered a £1200 iPhone. An email says you’ve got a delivery but there’s a fee to be paid. Some company says you’ve been overcharged and are due a refund. So what are they after? Variously, for you to click an email link, press a phone button and connect to a premium rate service or give them your bank or card details. Usually you won’t be fooled but occasionally it coincides with what you might be expecting and sounds very credible so beware! These are not the ways that authentic organisations work.
