Floodtide Navigate An exploration of music, tide, people & places, Floodtide makes music from the movement of tidal water. A submerged sensor gathers information from tidal flow that is converted into musical notation, read from screens or mobile phones and played live by musicians. Created by composer and yachtsman John Eacott, this is a live and ever-changing portrait of the local tide. No performance of Floodtide is the same, with the music being constantly affected by environmental factors such as wind, air pressure, rain, and even passing boats. “John Eacott’s Floodtide is a very unusual, and probably important, piece of music. The fascination in the music is exactly the non-intentionality behind it: musical events are not decided by the composer or players. Something that closely models natural processes is at work here, says composer and journalist Steve Beresford. On New Moon, March 2015 Floodtide Navigate set sail from Antwerp on a five-month journey on the 46ft yacht Jacomina. Using the boat as a base the project is making weekly tidal sonification performances of waterways in conjunction with local performers and arts organisations. Additionally, a residency programme has facilitated collaborating artists, musicians, writers, coders and scientists to spend a week aboard. Having visited locations in Belgium, France and Spain, Jacomina sails from La Coruna to Padstow, before visiting the Bristol Channel for BIG Green Week.

Here, in Bristol, John will run a series of workshops for local musicians to play music generated by the tide, and there will be a performance of Floodtide by Bristol groups from the #Lovethefuture Hub daily at 1pm from 15-19th June. www.floodtide.eu Twitter | @floodtidemusic Facebook | floodtidemusic

RATHBONE GREENBANK INVESTMENTS

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE Following the financial crisis, it’s safe to say that many people have a negative impression of the financial services industry. But away from the skyscrapers and the stereotypes, a small team in a leafy corner of Bristol are hard at work investing people’s money ethically so it makes a positive difference in the world. Rathbone Greenbank Investments, an investment manager not a bank, was established in 1997 as a way for people to invest money in an ethical way. They now have over 1,300 clients and currently invests over £700m on their behalf according to their ethical concerns and interests. “We were pioneers of a new concept in ethical investing,” says John David, head of Rathbone Greenbank Investments (pictured) and a Rathbone employee of 14 years. He explains that the pioneering element of their service means “looking at both sides of the coin” by avoiding investments in the so-called “sin stocks” (gambling, alcohol, pornography, guns) – a well-established practice known as “ethical screening” – while moving the approach on by seeking out companies active in positive areas, such as renewable energy or fair trade, or which conduct their business in an ethical manner. And this isn’t an add-on, a moral corrective to a darker side. “Ethical investing is all we do,” says Perry Rudd, head of ethical research at Rathbone Greenbank. “We only manage portfolios with an ethical and sustainable focus.”

28 - BIG GREEN WEEK 2015

While the primary service the team offers is on the investment side, they are also happy to engage with companies. Rathbone Greenbank recently co-sponsored and was a driving force behind a resolution put forward by shareholders in BP and Shell, calling on them to do more to address the risks of climate change. Despite the bad rap that some parts of the financial services industry have faced in recent years, it is reassuring that a team like Rathbone Greenbank exists to allow people to use their money to encourage positive behaviour and change, to invest using their heart, not just their head. Join Rathbone Greenbank at their event, Investing in the Future on Thursday, June 18th. Find out more on page 42.

Rathbone Greenbank Investments is delighted to announce Sir Tim Smit KBE, co-founder and Executive Vice Chair of the Eden Project, will be the keynote speaker at its ‘Investing in the Future’ event, taking place on 18 June 2015 at the At-Bristol science centre. Tim’s presentation will be followed by a series of short talks by prominent local figures involved in creating a more sustainable future, including: • • • • •

Juliet Davenport – CEO & Founder, Good Energy Plc Merlin Hyman – Chief Executive, Regen SW Lisa Jones – Soil Association Nick Sturge – Centre Director, SETsquared Bristol John David – Head of Rathbone Greenbank Investments

Each speaker will bring their particular perspective to the debate, looking at how their organisations are meeting the diverse challenges of investing in the planet’s future for generations to come. Tickets for the event are priced at £10 and include lunch and refreshments. The day is also hosted by Amy Robinson, Network Director of Low Carbon South West with a special guest appearance by Mayor George Ferguson.

The solar success story continues Easton Community Centre, Hamilton House, Knowle West Media Centre, South Bristol Sports Centre, The Folk House, The Mill - these fine establishments are already benefiting from solar panel installations from Bristol Energy Cooperative (BEC). Could your building be next? BEC was formed in 2011 by a number of community groups across the city. We invest in renewables across the greater Bristol area.

• The building users benefit from cheap green energy.

Since we started we’ve raised around £250,000 through community share offers for our installations.

We are now finalising our third share offer for a further portfolio of solar on community and commercial buildings. If you’d like your building to be added to our installation list, visit www.bristolenergy.coop/potential-partners.html or phone 07503 372 689.
