T HE GREEN GU IDE TO BRISTOL AND BAT H Welcome!

Contents

The aim of the new Green Guide to Bristol and Bath is pretty straightforward: to provide you with an easy-to-use directory of those businesses in the local region that are trying to do their bit to save resources, reduce waste, use less, pay suppliers a fair rate and give the consumer genuine value. That’s not too much to ask, surely?

Days Out ......................................................2

Inside you’ll find shops selling fairly traded goods, grocers selling local, organic and GM-free food, low-impact days out, charity shops, renewable energy suppliers and cafés, bars and restaurants that specialise in local, seasonal food. Oh, and plenty of ways to get around both Bristol and Bath without having to shell out for fossil fuels.

For Arts’ Sake

Sarah Thorp is our guide for Bristol’s annual Arts Trails

A

projects for the European Green Capital or painted a sheep for the Shaun in the City trail. North Bristol Artists even produce their own Bristol Impressions calendar.

rt trails celebrate the fantastic artistic creativity on offer in our city.

Taking place over various weekends throughout the year, they feature hundreds of Bristol artists, showing work in their homes, studios and public venues. This is a great opportunity to stroll around a leafy area such as Clifton, Totterdown, Easton or St Andrews, admire the excellent views (often reflected in the art), meet many of our finest local artists and discuss their work. It’s a chance to buy unique pieces at a reasonable price or just have a browse in a relaxed, social setting. From the exhibitor’s side, a trail is a fantastic way to sell art direct to the public and a useful way to gain feedback. Many professional artists have begun their careers this way. Collaborative art ventures are often started through the trails, as artists find it more fun way to share the experience of opening up their homes to visitors. Many of the artists from the trails worked on art

Interestingly, each art trail has its own flavour, reflecting the locality. Many art trails host community events, workshops or children’s activities. There may be musical or theatrical performances and there is certain to be plenty of homemade cake on offer. Art trails are best followed on foot and each one has a free map, which can be picked up in the area or downloaded. If you see something you like but can’t commit to buying on the spot then artists’ details are on the art trail websites and many of the artists are represented year round in Bristol’s art galleries, pop up shops & co-operatives. Sarah Thorp is a North Bristol Artist and owns Room 212 which is part of the North Bristol Art Trail and shows work by over 100 Bristol artists. www.room212.co.uk

CAFÉS AND RESTAURANT S Bristol and Bath have a huge range of great restaurants, cafés, sandwich shops, burger bars and takeaways. Many of them use locally grown veggies, organic and free-range meat, sustainably-sourced fish and are doing their bit for the planet by recycling, reusing and keeping an eye on their carbon footprint. From breakfast through to dinner, whatever your mood, however thick your wallet or deep your pockets, if it’s values rather than just value you’re after, then look no further than Food Made Good to guide you to the very best eateries in the area.

Food Made Good is the only rating system that means you don’t have to park your principles in the cloakroom. And it’s about more than just the food. So,

whether free-range eggs are a must, you have a real bee in your bonnet about food waste, or want to see your waiter paid a decent wage, then look out for the Food Made Good stars. Think of them as the Michelin Stars of Sustainability, rewarding excellence for people and planet. And food lovers in Bristol and Bath really are spoilt for choice. Whether it’s coffee and a sandwich, fish and chips, a Sunday roast or a Michelin star blow out – there’s a huge menu of options to choose from. Start the day with coffee and mushrooms on toast at one of the many Boston Tea Party cafés dotted around the area. You see, rather than bin the ‘waste’ coffee grounds, those clever people at Boston Tea Party send them to Dartmoor Prison. There the prisoners use the grounds as the secret ingredient to help grow their mushrooms, which are then sent back to be cooked for the lucky customers at Boston Tea Party. You see sustainability is all about smart, innovative thinking, helping to make the food taste that little bit better. Take a short journey out of the city and you’ll soon find yourself in the rural calm of The Ethicurean in Wrington. Situated in a beautiful walled garden, the restaurant takes full advantage of the fabulous array of fruit and vegetables on the doorstep. For those with a taste for a drink – look out for the homemade spirits.

[8]

Now out in the Mendips and within a stone’s throw of Blagdon and Chew Lake, it’d be a shame not to find room for tea in the organic garden at Yeo Valley HQ. Or, hold out for sustainably sourced fish and chips on the banks of the lake at Salt & Malt, the baby sister of the Michelin Star Pony & Trap. Look out for one of Bath Ales’ pubs if you like to combine locally brewed ale with your food.

And if you can’t face stepping out of the front door get a take away from The Thali Café and you get a lovely reusable tiffin tin – none of those plastic or foil containers cluttering up the local landfill site.

Back within the city limits, among the top rated Food Made Good restaurants to visit, consider Poco (what they don’t know about local produce and making delicious use of every last scrap of it isn’t worth knowing), Bordeaux Quay which, despite its city centre location, is growing apple trees and herbs on its terrace, or go for a classic bacon sandwich at Friska – free-range of course. Vegetarian? Then head to The Canteen, where the non-meat options take pride of place atop the menu.

www.foodmadegood.org

There’s a huge smorgasbord to choose from: you’ve no excuse not to turn your passion into action. Find out more - and find a full list of local Food Made Good eateries at

fresh-range: a fresh approach to food shopping Something very exciting is happening in the field of locally produced, sustainable food. For just over a year now, farmers, fishermen, makers and bakers in and around Bristol and Bath have been selling their fresh produce through a new, local online store - fresh-range.com fresh-range makes it easy for you to choose the freshest foods from dozens of local producers and have them delivered to your door. HOME ENERGY People are increasingly feeling the social & economic benefits of a greener lifestyle, but sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start, says Andy

O’Brien of the Bristol Energy Cooperative

Home energy is a great place to start when reducing your carbon footprint. There are many things you can do, from reducing your consumption and using more energy-efficient appliances, to switching to a greener energy provider. National organisations like the Energy Saving Trust and Bristol-based Centre for Sustainable Energy can provide lots more information, but we are also lucky in

having many home grown organisations in the area that are inspiring and supporting individual action. These include Bristol Green Doors, Transition Bath, the local energy cooperatives, and the Bristol Energy Network. The European Green Capital award is a recognition of much that is happening already, and plans for Zero Carbon Bristol are providing a focus for the longer-term challenge. There’s no better time to find out what’s available, and this section of the Green Guide to Bristol and Bath lists many of the people who are here to help. 10:10 provide a handy introduction to reducing your carbon footprint at www.1010uk.org/articles/very-roughguide-your-carbon-footprint

Community Action on Energy Bristol Energy Network is an umbrella organisation for all community energy groups and activities in Bristol and the surrounding area. Community energy groups run a range of projects; installing solar panels on community buildings, helping people make their homes warm and energy efficient through insulation, draught-proofing and other measures, and working with people on low incomes to help reduce their energy bills. In 2013, BEN produced the Bristol Community Strategy for Energy which provides a roadmap to creating a city where everyone has access to affordable low-carbon energy, with active communities across the city generating a significant amount of their energy need. If your community has an interest in developing community energy projects or you would like to get involved contact us on coordinator@bristolenergynetwork.org / 0117 934 1432

Did you know that lowering your thermostat by 1˚C can reduce your energy consumption by up to 10%?

Warm Up your home energy advice from Bristol City Council s a council we have a responsibility to support the people of our city A - and one of the ways that we can do this is by making their homes cheaper to run while adding value to their properties. The council’s

Warm Up Bristol scheme is a four year initiative designed to do just that. With help from a £7.3m grant from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and Energy Company Obligation subsidies from EDF, we’re helping thousands of householders to improve their homes. We give advice on energy saving measures and the grant funding that’s available to help people finance home improvements. We have 45 energy improvements on offer ranging from solid and cavity wall insulation to double glazing, draft proofing, solar PV panels and even new boilers. The scheme has been running for a number of months now and we have already helped over 1,000 households. Our goal is to install around 30,000 energy saving measures over the next four years but we also want to empower as many people as possible to understand energy efficiency and cut their energy bills for good. Even something as simple as turning your heating thermostat down by one degree in the winter months, could save a household up to £65 a year. Combine that with a few other measures like loft insulation and draft proofing and you are sure to notice the difference when it comes to paying your energy bills. There really is something for everyone, so get in touch and find out how your home can be made cosier and more cost-effective via the Warm Up Bristol website or by phoning 0800 107 4100. www.warmupbristol.co.uk [33]

Glorious Gloucester Road! Sarah Thorp goes shopping on ‘The Last Great British High Street’

S

hopping local, supporting independent traders and enjoying the social elements of the high street have always been the backbone of retail and this ethos needs to stay strong in order to sustain economic recovery. As a highly creative city, Bristol’s shops stand out as imaginative, socially engaging and environmentally aware. Our city is buzzing with art, music and community events and this is reflected on our high streets. Gloucester Road is a prime example. Called The Last Great British High Street by The Independent, and credited as the longest street of independent shops in Europe, the road meanders up from Stokes Croft, uniting the areas of Redland, St Andrews, Bishopston and Horfield. Unlike high street chain stores, these independent shops give a wealth of choice, sourcing from markets and local suppliers to bring fresher produce with less packaging and carbon footprint. A fantastic mix of cafés, restaurants and bars adds to the colour and vitality of the road, with a good bus service day and night.

Until recently the main attractions of Gloucester Road petered out with the incline of Pigsty Hill. However, a burst of new shops provides more attractions further up the road. These artisan traders have tucked themselves in besides the family-run butchers and bakers to create a social hub with tubs of flowers and lots of local art. Known as Glos Rd Central, traders keep the shops, community and local green spaces interconnected through the local papers, social media and free events such as the North Bristol Art Trail, Christmas Party, Mayfest and BIG Green Week. Gloucester Road is a vibrant example of how shopping can be more than a schlep to the supermarket. Instead, a pop to the shops becomes a full-day family excursion. Supporting our local traders means keeping our high streets alive, maintaining a friendly neighbourhood and positive future for us all. Sarah Thorp is Chairperson of Glos Rd Central and owner of Room 212, a shop & gallery of Bristol artists. www.glosrdcentral.co.uk www.room212.co.uk

Bagging a Bargain in Bath! take a look at what’s on offer in Bath’s many independent stores

B

ath is one of the UK’s top locations for a spa break or a spot of retail therapy, with an excellent mix of independent shops and well-known high street brands. Yet it’s also home to some quirky gift shops, imaginative homeware stores, delicious delis, fabulous galleries, jewellers, antiques emporiums, arts and craft shops and well-regarded independent bookshops. Unlike the bustling shopping hubs many of us are used to, shopping in Bath is very pleasant experience: much of the city centre is pedestrianised and, with most shops in easy walking distance of each other, the city is easily explored on foot. As an added bonus, there are plenty of delightful cafés, pubs and restaurants should you need to take a break from all of the shopping. Walcot Street, Bath’s bohemian arts quarter, offers vintage and retro clothing, stunning interiors shops, great food and is home to the city’s only co-operatively

owned pub, The Bell. At the other end of the city, the new SouthGate development hosts more than 50 shops, from major names to London-based boutiques, and round every corner you’ll find something to interest and delight. Late in the year the city becomes a magical place for festive shopping, with the Bath Christmas Market offering over 150 retailers in their distinctive, Swiss-style chalets packed with handmade gifts and local produce. A foodie’s haven, Bath is home to the UK’s first regular Farmer’s Market, which takes place each Saturday in Green Park Station, and a number of excellent delis as well as the thriving and historic Guildhall Market, with traditional stalls selling local food, household goods, deli products and just about everything else you could need. The Bath Guildhall Market is the oldest shopping venue in the city: trade has taken place on this site for the last 800 years.

A former biology teacher, Jenny’s paintings often reflect her love of the South West coastline and the British countryside. She adores her hometown of Bristol and her signature cityscapes, featuring hot-air balloons and Clifton Suspension Bridge, are a familiar sight locally.

Jenny recently painted two Shaun the Sheep statues, part of the Shaun in the City campaign to raise money for sick children: Lambmark Larry, in Paddington Station and Baa-loon on Sion HIll, Bristol. Jenny’s work can be bought in galleries all over the South West - including Room 212 on Gloucester Rd, Bristol - as well as online. She has a growing range of limited edition prints & greetings cards and she also undertakes commissions!
