EDITORS LETTER
ETIHAD REGIONAL EDITORS LETTER
DEAR READERS, This spring heralds great novelties, the first, you may have already noticed, is our new Etihad Regional label with which we have started to operate following a partnership with Etihad Airways, the well know national air line company of the United Arab Emirates. A partnership that we are very proud of and that stands as a reward for the Darwin Airline staff, for the passion and the drive they have put into their work since the day our company was born a little more than ten years ago. This collaboration also implies the support of a large structure and opens the way to important future developments. A new page in our history, that will allow us to offer you new travel experiences, more connections and a high added-value service. A clear indication of this important evolution will be the impending enlargement of our fleet, with the addition, between now and June, of four new ATR72-500 aircraft, with our new Etihad Regional uniform – comfortable airplanes that we are sure will make your journey and your flight experience with our company even more pleasant. This fleet extension will support the rapid expansion of our network with two new important routes connecting Switzerland to Germany and France. The first route is Zurich-Leipzig, for business and leisure trips to the vibrant Saxony town, cradle of German literature. The second route connects Geneva and Toulouse, the French ville rose, named so after the typical colour of its ancient buildings. We are also working on our summer routes… but we’ll keep that as a surprise for our next issue. We invite you to follow us as always and hope to see you soon on our next flights,
We wish you a pleasant trip.
Buon viaggio.

Bon voyage .
Gute Reise.

Liszt Festival 20.03/26.10.2014 – Austria, Raiding Child prodigy, piano virtuoso, heartthrob and enchanter of Europe’s concert halls: Franz Liszt was one of the most dazzling musical personalities of the Romantic era and the composer of a gigantic oeuvre. Staged in the province of Burgenland the Liszt Festival Raiding 2014 will present a superlative programme of concerts. Johannes und Eduard Kutrowatz, the artistic directors of the Liszt Festival Raiding, have set a variety of focuses for 2014 at the Liszt concert centre: a cycle of piano works, a cycle of orchestral and chamber music works, a cycle of songs and vocal works as well as commemorative concerts. These will be presented in four blocks in March, June and October. The Franz Liszt Concert Hall contains about 600 seats and can be found in the town of Raiding, the birth place of Franz Liszt. All of the contributors had a common objective: the realization of the criteria of “Sight, Sound and Experience.” Chocoa Festival 28 /31.03 - The Netherlands, Amsterdam The four-day festival at Amsterdam's Scheepvaartmuseum examines the origin, production and taste of quality chocolate. The Port of Amsterdam is one of the busiest cocoa ports in the world, so it’s fitting to celebrate chocolate in all its bean-to-bar glory at Het Scheepvaartmuseum (the National Maritime Museum). Just like wine, chocolate has nuances that can be learned through serious tasting. Rubens. The Triumph of the Eucharist 25.03/29.06.2014 - Madrid, Spain, Prado The exhibition focuses on both a major restoration project at the Museum and on the importance and outstanding quality of Rubens’s paintings. It analyses one of Rubens’s most important projects: the six panels on “The Triumph of the Eucharist” commissioned from the artist by Isabel Clara Eugenia in 1625. 8

Cologne Literature Festival 12/22.03.2014, in Various interesting venues in Cologne The city of Cologne hosts Europe's largest literature festival, presenting internationally renowned authors. The festival is famous for its unusual locations and events; you can listen to crime stories at the Cologne police headquarters, or enjoy poems on a ship. During two weeks, the lit. Cologne offers a highclass mixture of international and German-speaking authors. In addition readings of the classics, the festival offers a wide range of cross-genre events, which create links between theatre, music film and the visual arts. METRO Group Marathon Düsseldorf 27.04.2014 - Düsseldorf The METRO Group Marathon Düsseldorf is a always true sightseeing run: be it the Tonhalle concert hall, government palace or the trade-fair centre – the 42.195 km stretch is not only one of the fastest in Germany but also one of the most attractive. Thus runners may take in the world-famous Königsallee, pass the modern MedienHafen with buildings by such internationally renowned star architects as Frank O. Gehry and ready themselves for the final sprint along the Rhine promenade that presents a view of the Schlossturm (palace tower) and Rhine Tower. Esprit Montmartre. Bohemian Life in Paris around 1900 until 01.06.2014 - Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt A notorious district in Paris’s 18th arrondissement held special appeal for a number of the most well-known modern artists: Montmartre. “The quarter resembles a huge studio,” a contemporary critic wrote in the 1890s about the hill on what was then the city’s outskirts. Having preserved its original rural flair, it represented a counter-world to the mundane Paris of the “belle époque.” The Schirn exhibition has set out to convey a sense of the special Montmartre atmosphere. More than two hundred works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Suzanne Valadon, Edgar Degas and others will lure visitors into the milieu of the Parisian “bohème” around the turn of the century.
Weimar 01.04/30.11.2014 - Bauhaus Museum Weimar and various venues The city of Weimar is the birthplace of the Bauhaus movement, which revolutionized architectural and aesthetic concepts in the 20th century. Originally created by students, the Bauhaus Walking Tour project is integral part of Weimar’s cultural landscape. The tour guides show visitors what it means to study, learn, live and have fun at this unique university with its eventful history.
The End of the 20th Century until 30.03.2014 - Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin “The future wasn’t any better before” – in an exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, artists show how they imagine the future. Artists imagine it as catastrophic, paradisial or eternally redundant. In the early 1980s Joseph Beuys already rang in The End of the Twentieth Century with a sculpture consisting of a lift truck, basalt steles and pallets, and this work has given the exhibition its title. “The best is yet to come”, sang Frank Sinatra in 1959, which is the exhibition’s subtitle. The show has been mounted mainly with works belonging to the collection of the businessman Erich Marx. Among the core pieces are works by Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol. There are also works by artists of the younger generation. 11

BERLIN: YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW

ermany’s capital represents a kaleidoscopic bridge between past and future, and the city embraces the very latest trends in architecture, fashion, design and art. Today, all its past tragedies and humiliations notwithstanding, Berlin appears to be brimming with youthfulness and optimism in the eyes of millions of its residents, visitors and guests of various kinds, all drawn to its unique appeal. The city gives the impression of being vital and dynamic: a throbbing metropolis that is always on the move. That said, in ways that are impossible to explain, one can still sense that the city has suffered enormously and known devastation frankly unthinkable in other urban areas, and that perhaps it is just this suffering that has given the city the drive to regenerate and reinvent itself. Paradoxically enough, in this city reduced to rubble during the war, largely rebuilt and now sporting architectural showpieces erected over the last ten years that have made it in many ways unrecognisable, history is always present, and that of the last century above all. The key word for Berlin is “memory”: the memory of a frightening past that lives on, as a warning. Yet, despite its attachment to its history, Berlin lives the present intensely and simultaneously strains towards the future. “Berlin,” wrote Karl Scheffler in 1910 – and his words would prove prophetic – “is a city condemned forever to becoming, and never to being.” Those words still ring true, as can be seen in the various urban and architectural transformations that have gradually changed the face of the city. From imperial-era buildings with their busts of the Roman emperors and classicising columns, embodying the Prussians’ dream of Berlin as a “new Athens”; through the interlude of the desolate urban wasteland, a legacy of the Second World War; to the

post-1989 architectural reconstruction, the prophecy fits, and also suits the cultural and artistic ferment that has made Berlin the trendiest city in Europe. “I want to wake up in a city that never sleeps,” goes the world-famous song dedicated to New York, but it could easily apply to Berlin as well. One look at Alexanderplatz at 6 a.m. will suffice: one would expect to see a few stragglers on foot, yet it could be the middle of the day, instead, with people going back and forth, streetcars and buses full, passengers entering and pouring out of the nearest station. Despite the remarkable distances (the city covers an enormous area, 892 km2), it’s a pleasure to walk in the city and enjoy it at one’s leisure. Looking around,

every street, intersection or building treats the eye to evocative glimpses, totally unexpected perspectives and odd corners. It’s also reassuring to know that getting lost is well nigh impossible: wherever you are in the city, the television tower (Fernsehturm), 368m high, is always visible and enables the most bewildered tourist to get his or her bearings. Just as soon as the Berlin Wall started to come down in 1990, blow by blow, the construction sites appeared, with bulldozers in action and hundreds of cranes dotting the city skyline. It was too good an occasion to pass up: redesign the layout of a major city by making use of an abundance of open areas that had appeared overnight. Imaginations ran wild,
and examples of this creativity abound. The Jewish Museum was designed by Daniel Libeskind, with a deliberately jagged shape, and irregular openings in the surface that allow fractured light into the interior and create dramatic spaces that allude to the Final Solution. Libeskind divided the building into three parts: the Holocaust axis, ending in a pitch-dark tower with just one slit in the wall to provide light, and cold, concrete walls, giving visitors the sensation of being in a lager; the axis of Continuity, or the history of Judaism in Berlin (packed with items connected with the culture in any way and often interactive exhibits,
allowing visitors to take part in the city, watch screenings, experience the traditions of Jewish dining, weddings, and culture, with the screams of wartime in the air); and the axis of Emigration. The German Historical Museum, designed by I.M. Pei, is located inside a historic grouping of buildings formed by the Zeughaus, the Altes Museum, the Neue Wache, and the nearby museum facilities on the Museum Island. It is distinguished by its signature glass-enclosed spiral staircase. Even the interior of the Reichstag – the building housing the German Parliament, which has preserved its façade built under Wilhem II – has been completely restyled by the architect Norman Foster. The centrepiece of the entire ren13

ovation is the large glass dome added to the existing building, which rises above the façade to become the focal point of the entire design, at the centre of which, inside, is an enormous inverted cone covered with 360 mirrors that reflect natural light into the parliamentary chamber below. The place where most of the recent buildings have gone up is Potsdamer Platz. A vital traffic hub during the early decades of the 20th century, the square lost its purpose when the Berlin Wall was built, and when the Wall came down it was left as a vast, desolate expanse. No longer. The square is now a veritable open-air showcase for contemporary architecture. In 1991, a competition was announced for the redesign of the entire area through the creation of offices, entertainment and cultural venues, and commercial and residential buildings. The world’s leading architectural firms responded, and it was Renzo Piano who was handed the project, the overall urban planning
scheme and artistic supervision of the entire complex. He himself designed eight of the buildings, while the others were entrusted to world-class architectural firms. The result is stunning. Three separate areas define the area, Daimler City (1998), Sony Center (2000) and Besheim Centre (2004): 19 futuristic buildings, all in all, that somehow refer back to traditional construction models, in a play of light, colours, shapes and materials that are all very different, yet perfectly integrated. Five minutes away from Daimler City, the Kulturforum includes the Philharmonic by Hans Sharoun, the Neue Nationalgalerie and the Gemaldegalerie. The Kulturforum hosts some of the most significant figurative art collections in the world, bringing together works from East and West Berlin in an enormous number of rooms. With its ultra-modern feel, the square which contains the Gemaldegalerie and the St. Matthew’s Church makes the church seem to be out of place, although it has stood there since

the mid-19th century. Beyond Potsdamer Platz, if one proceeds on foot in the direction of the Brandenburg Gate, a sort of labyrinth soon appears. This enormous outdoor space is covered with myriad reinforced concrete slabs (2,711 of them!), all of equal length and width but varying in height, from a few centimetres to over two metres, and arranged in parallel rows divided by narrow walkways. This is the Me-
morial to the Murdered Jews of Europe designed by Peter Eisenman. Once in the maze, visitors experience discomfort. The physical space is deliberately minimal, with room for one person at a time. One’s field of vision becomes narrower and narrower as one presses on; this must be the feeling of utter solitude that the prisoners in the camps must have experienced. Anna Martano Grigorov

BERLIN: GESTERN, HEUTE UND MORGEN

The Quadriennale Düsseldorf would like to convey an atmosphere of high spirits; it would like to move the fine arts out of the White Cube and onto the streets – attracting people who may not have taken much of an interest in art or museums up till now. rom The Quadriennale Düsseldorf is a fine arts festival that has taken place every four years since 2006, in each case for a period of several months. Since 2008 it has been under the responsibility of the Quadriennale GmbH, whose sole shareholder is the State Capital of Düsseldorf. The management team of the Quadriennale GmbH comprises Hans-Georg Lohe and Angela Eckert-Schweizer. Under a jointly developed guiding theme, the city’s foremost art museums, exhibition spaces and galleries conceive unique exhibitions, presentations and an extensive supporting programme. Partners from other sectors are invited to participate in the festival. The first Quadriennale took place in 2006 under the theme “The Body in Art” (attracting 380,000 visitors), followed in 2010 by “Presence in Art” (250,000 visitors). The guiding theme for the Quadriennale in 2014 is Beyond Tomorrow, for the realisation of which the State Capital of Quadriennale Düsseldorf has set aside a budget of more than four million Euros. From 5 April to 10 August 2014 the museums and art institutions will explore visions of the future as expressed in art, science and technology. metropolis while maintaining a critical distance; registering the contemporary mainstream without succumbing to it – these aspirations are what account for the art festival’s special dynamic, and also its strength. The Quadriennale Düsseldorf is a journey of discovery that not only leads to novel experiences and insights but also blazes a new trail every time. The story begins with an elector and his extravagance. In the 17th century Johann Wilhelm II, Elector PalatinateNeuburg, resides in Düsseldorf, a devoted connoisseur of the arts. He acts

as patron for painters and sculptors, has an opera house built, founds a drawing school, and indulges his passion for collecting. He is particularly enamoured of Italian, Flemish and Dutch Renaissance and Baroque painting. When Jan Wellem dies in 1716, he leaves the city not only a legacy of immense debt, but also a world-famous art collection: the “Quadriennale Düsseldorf Paintings Gallery”. Quadriennale Düsseldorf becomes one of the centres of the European Baroque and increasingly attracts the attention of artists from all over the world. In the early 19th century a veritable artis-
tic migration sets in, with painters and sculptors from Scandinavia, Russia and even Iran converging on Quadriennale Düsseldorf to study at its famous Art Academy. The painting technique of the Rhineland school is seminal particularly for genre and landscape painting. And the Quadriennale Düsseldorf arts scene soon gains a reputation far beyond the city’s borders. In 1829 the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen is founded here, the oldest art association in Germany. And Ratinger Strasse develops into the Rhineland’s first street of art galleries.
AN ENTIRE CITY DEVOTED TO ART The Story of the Quadriennale Düsseldorf
On this picture, Düsseldorf skyline with Rheinturm and Neuer Zollhof, Opposite page, above, a poster of the Quadriennale Düsseldorf.
Between 1819 and 1918, some 4,000 painters can be counted as part of the Quadriennale Düsseldorf School. Many of them take what they have learnt here back home with them, thus generating important impulses for the development of painting in the 19th century. They lay the groundwork for the major role Quadriennale Düsseldorf still plays today as a centre for the arts. After the First World War, the avantgarde of the 1920s sparks a flourishing arts scene in Düsseldorf, which comes to an abrupt end in the 1930s when the Nazis rise to power. What then happens on Düsseldorf’s post-war art scene in the early 1960s thus has the impact of a liberating coup: Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke conceive a style known as “Capitalist Realism”; the ZERO movement tries to overcome materiality; and Joseph Beuys gets himself fired as professor by trying to give everyone free access to the Art Academy. The galleries and museums are swept up in the energy field of the Quadriennale Düsseldorf artists and attract the avant-garde to the city on the Rhine. Gallery owner Konrad Fischer thus presents Minimal and Conceptual art in the late 1960s, long before these currents have even been heard of elsewhere in Europe. And Werner Schmalenbach, founding director of the Kunstsammlung Nord- rhein-Westfalen, establishes during his tenure from 1962 to 1990 the only state collection in Germany specialising in modern art. The dynamism continues unabated during the 1980s and 90s with several exhibitions that cause an international sensation. Among them are Kasper König’s “From Here – Two Months of New German Art in Düsseldorf” and Jörg Immendorff’s famous “Café Deutschland. Adlerhälfte” (Café Germany: Eagle Half). With newly opened and established institutions, such as Museum Kunstpalast and NRW-Forum Quadriennale Düsseldorf(1998), Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen K21 Ständehaus (2002), and KIT – Kunst im Tunnel (2007), the museum and exhibition landscape has expanded by leaps and bounds over the

the art festival Quadriennale Düsseldorf. This gives the major museums and exhibition spaces as well as the Art Academy an opportunity to demonstrate over a period of four months just what drives them, what moves them – revolving around a main theme that would be too broad for a single institution to tackle, but which all can productively address together. A theme that each museum or art space can approach in its own way – while also building conceptual bridges to the subject matter explored in the other exhibitions. What makes the Quadriennale Düsseldorf so bold and somehow “different” is that it does not follow the contemporary formula for success of so many other art festivals. Instead, it focuses in closely on a theme that is relevant both to society and art theory: as reflected in various epochs and filtered through different disciplines and attitudes. Chicca Magri

Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs Tate Modern - London, 17.04/07.09.2014 Henri Matisse is a giant of modern art. This landmark show explores the final chapter in his career in which he began ‘carving into colour’ and his series of spectacular cut-outs was born. The exhibition represents a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see so many of the artist’s works in one place. The exhibition marks an historic moment, when treasures from around the world can be seen together. Tate’s The Snail 1953 is shown alongside its sister work Memory of Oceania 1953 and Large Composition with Masks 1953 at 10 metres long. A photograph of Matisse’s studio reveals that these works were initially conceived as a unified whole, and this is the first time they will have been together since they were made. Matisse’s famous series of Blue Nudes represent the artist’s renewed interest in the figure. 21

Indeed, back in the 1500s women were trying to imitate Elizabeth I’s slender figure by squeezing themselves into the tightest of corsets, while today it’s the new princess, Kate Middleton, who represents a fashion icon for thousands of young women who approve of her simple elegance. ful place in the pantheon of world style icons. Just as students took to the street in protest and pop-rock music was born (with the Beatles leading the way), London spawned key movements in the history of fashion, like the mod style or pop. This was the time when the designer Mary Quant, a fashion force in London since the 50s, entrusted Twiggy, slender style icon and Andy Warhol’s muse, with launching the first mini-skirt. In the heyday of the great youth revolution, a reaction against the austerity that had been the legacy of two world wars, women wore bright colours in new styles and fabrics, and fashion announced one’s social status or one’s belonging to a specific art or music movement. It’s no coincidence, then, that Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 film Blow Up, one of the pictures that best reflected these epic changes, featured an anti-hero who was a fashion photographer, and even looked like the London portrait photographer David Bailey. It was in ‘Swinging London’ in the magical Sixties the first in-
dependent bands appeared, most of which gravitated around King’s Road in Chelsea or Carnaby Street in Soho, the eclectic neighbourhood that is still on the fashionistas’ shopping itinerary today. Moreover, from the mid-60s onwards, British colleges started to turn out an impressive number of fashion designers. Thanks to the determination of personalities like Muriel Pemberton, Madge Garland and Janey Ironside, fashion came into its own in London academia, which only a few years earlier hadn’t even considered fashion design to be on an equal footing with its other degree programmes. Today, institutions like the Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art enrol thousands of talented youths from all over the world, and their alumni include figures of the calibre of John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Phoebe Philo. In the early 70s, there were just a dozen or so big names in English fashion, and they included designers such as Zandra Rhodes, Mary Quant, Bill Gibb, Antho-
ny Price and Jean Muir. Then, with the rise of the punk and new wave counter-culture in the late 70s and early 80s, the British capital racked up a few more points in its favour, creating a powerful and radically innovative style that would leave its mark on haute couture as well. The well-known designer Zandra Rhodes would bring the punk look to the catwalk in 1977, while the 35-yearold Vivienne Westwood opened her first shop in King’s Road in a joint business venture with her partner, Michael McLaren, the manager of the legendary punk band Sex Pistols. Her boutique would change its name, and its own look, many times over the years, but today it is still at its original address in 430 King’s Road, in Chelsea, where a large clock, the arms of which, disarmingly enough, spin counter-clockwise, welcomes fashion victims from around the globe. This is World’s End, Vivienne Westwood’s eclectic boutique whose styles are on display on the covers of glossy magazines the world over. In the decades that fol-

seventy world-renowned designers will be showing their wares on the runways, while in the splendid setting of Somerset House there will also be an exhibition of the creations of over 150 designers. The following week, another event devoted to the retail trade, the Fashion Weekend, will be held in London, this one open to the public. There are also a number of ‘unofficial’ shows taking place at other venues in the capital during
Fashion Week, such as “On|Off” and “Vauxhall Fashion Scout”. Moreoever, every year the capital hosts a lot of events devoted to hairstyling and make-up professionals, such as the International Make-up Artist Trade Show in June and the Salon International in October. Walk through the streets of the British capital, and it’s obvious: creativity is in the air at all times. Every neighbourhood, even as it constantly evolves, keeps its fashion identity intact, from the glamour of the West End and the speciality shops of Chelsea to luxury boutiques in Mayfair and the eclectic appeal of Soho, Camden Town and Shoreditch. London offers myriad opportunities for professionals in the fashion, beauty and design fields, as its many specialised training institutes attest. Gustave Doré (1832-1883).The Power of the Imagination until 15.05.2014 - Musée d’Orsay - Paris Gustave Doré was one of the most prodigious artists of the 19th century. They lived in the underground tunnels during the weeks which preceded the Arras offensive. On 9th April 2014 in the early hours of the morning, 97 years later, in front of the Memorial wall of the Wellington Quarry, a ceremony of remembrance will take place. This ceremony is a tribute to the British soldiers who took part in the Battle of Arras. 27

ité de l’espace is located at the heart of Toulouse, the European Capital of Space, which, with the Midi-Pyrénées Region, counts nearly 12,000 employees in the field of Space. Supported by the main organisations in the field, Cité de l’espace is in an ideal situation to offer the public a chance to discover a human and scientific adventure which changes every day. Cité de l’espace is at the crossroads of many professions and missions. Sharing advances in Space and astronomy as widely as possible, inciting people to learn more, inspiring vocations, serving as a “sounding board” for the Space industry, witnessing news from Space and astronomy, participating in the tourist appeal of Toulouse and its region: such are the roles of Cité de l’espace. To that end, it relies on a dense network of partners in all aspects of its missions: cultural, scientific, industrial, educational, tourist. Cité de l’espace is constantly changing to keep up with changes among its visitors and in Space Cité de l’espace offers opportunities to discover activities in Space and astronomy today in response to new expectations of the public, whether they are simply curious or already in the know, contemplative or active, children or adults. Obviously, Cité de l’espace has main-

tained the key elements that made for its success: full-size spacecraft to experience the reality of Space and feel like an astronaut, audiovisual shows to take the public to the confines of the Universe and its simulators to help share the Space adventure with young and old alike. Cité de l’espace organises meetings and events to enable visitors to experience Space, astronomic and cultural events live. At Cité de l’espace, visitors, as players in their discoveries, will have many different experiences and have fun discovering Space and its latest news. Entirely scripted and staged, visitors’ itinerary is based on six main themes or stories and as many sets. After 15 years of existence, Cité de l’espace completely rethought and renovated its permanent exhibitions in 2012, in both form and content: 2,000m2 dedicated to the human adventure in the stars. The itinerary begins in the sidelines of Space, as if visitors were entering a Launch Centre where rockets are sent off into Space. In this setting, both realistic and entertaining, curiosity is stimulated on all sides by various experiments and situations to entice them into discovery. The way rockets function, their origins and assembly of the Ariane 5 launcher throughout Europe are presented simply, through various experiments. Visitors can watch rocket
launches all over the world and act as Space engineers participating in different missions. They can each follow this itinerary as their own rhythm, naturally, in a fun way, alone, with the family or friends. Like a VIP with privileged access to a centre for building satellites and rockets, the public can discover how and with what precautions these devices are prepared for launching. Manned missions in Space are shown, in particular with a genuine Russian Orlan spacesuit and the amazing reconstruction of a clean room, the protected place for assembling satellites. Landmark Space archives and a gallery of portraits of pioneers of the Space saga complete this display. The second stage in the itinerary shows the Earth from Space. The public can realise that We, Earthlings, are all astronauts... And our spaceship is the Earth! Do we realise that the atmosphere is our spacesuit and for the moment we are in a very beautiful and fragile spaceship? Such awareness is broadly promoted by observing our planet from Space: satellites offer a view of the Earth that helps us better discover and understand it. Moreover, Space activity brings us new services every day: satellite applications. Fishermen, farmers, rescuers, caregivers and many more, all use satellites daily in their jobs. Here it is pos-
sible to test these services in very compelling sets. Pôle-Météo (the weather station) allows to discover meteorology and meet a weather forecaster. The services provided by satellites obviously include weather forecasting. Thanks to the presence of a meteorologist from Météo-France permanently in this exhibition area, and satellite images in real time, you can understand how to weather forecasts are made today. During the visit, you can even become a weather forecaster with the TV Studio, where you can record your own weather report, then watch yourself on television! Take the atmospheric lift to reach Space and explore the different levels of our atmosphere and reproduce weather phenomena live with images of cyclones, storms, etc, to understand why they form. In the exhibition area Quai du Système Solaire (Embarking for the Solar System), visitors have a first stopover at an altitude of 400km with the International Space Station, ISS. They can enter a full-size reconstruction of the ISS European Columbus module, a true laboratory and home in Space currently orbiting around the Earth. Visitors discover the daily lives of astronauts or try to devise a balanced meal with the strange dishes used in Space. The journey then continues towards our natu29

WROCLAW, THE RED BARON’S BAROQUE CITY Business, culture, night life, sports of all kinds, and… gnomes, in abundance! ts Polish name may look a little mysterious. You probably know it as Breslau (the German name), an art capital with a population of 640,000 in southwest Poland, in Lower Silesia, the region that belonged to Germany from 1741 until the end of the Second World War in 1945. Breslau started out as a Bohemian stronghold at the intersection of two trades routes: the Via Regia and the Amber Road. Its name derives from Vratlislaus I, duke of Bohemia, who ruled over the city in the tenth century. From Vratlislavia the name changed to Prezla, Preslau, Breslau and, finally, Wroclaw. Wroclaw’s airport, on the other hand, is named after the Polish scientist Nicolaus Copernicus, who proved that the sun was at the centre of our solar system. It ranks fourth for air traffic in Poland, after Warsaw, Krakow and Danzig. And speaking of aeronautics, the Red Baron himself (Manfred von Richthofen, the legendary fighter pilot) was born in Wroclaw, and the city can boast a variety of other famous residents,

such as the military theorist Carl von Clausewitz, Aloïs Alzheimer, who lent his name to the illness he discovered, and the philosopher Edith Stein. Wroclaw is a youthful, vibrant city that harbours the ambition of becoming ‘the new Prague’, thanks to its art collections and its role as an important economic hub, strategically located between Berlin, Prague and Warsaw on the main transEuropean transport axis linking Brussels and Kiev. The Oder River is its link to the Baltic Sea, and canals connect it to Berlin. Thriving industries include mechanics and metalworking, electronics and the railroads, and since 1989 the city has also become a key financial hub. Economic and business growth is also the byword when it comes to Wroclaw’s automobile industry, consumer goods, electrical engineering, finance, the healthcare industry and logistics. Foreign investors of the calibre of Toyota, Whirlpool, Fagor Electrodomesticos, Volvo, Bosch, Siemens, Allied Irish Bank and 3M all take advantage of the low-
cost labour and the existence of a welleducated, technology-savvy population. Historically, Poland, Austria, Prussia and Germany have all contended for control of this major port on the Oder River, near the Sudeten Mountains and in the middle of a fertile agricultural area, with its mild climate. Over the course of centuries, a large group of ethnic Germans settled in Wroclaw. In 1241, the city was invaded by the Tartars and burnt to the ground. After the Second World War, it was annexed to Poland, in accordance with the Potsdam Agreement, and given the Polish name of Wroclaw. But history and industry are just part of the story. At its core, Wroclaw is a Baroque art capital, full of life by day and by night. Over two hundred bars, clubs and restaurants around the Market Square cater to an impressive calendar of festivals and other cultural events. Wroclaw was a Uefa Euro 2012 host city and will also be hosting the World Games in 2017. Sports, in fact, have a high pro-

Live music can be enjoyed in sophisticated venues such as the Firlej, Eter and Puzzle, while the old city hall is home to one of Europe’s oldest restaurants, the Piwnica Świdnicka. Every year, in the second weekend in May, Wroclaw throws its own all-out three-day beer festival (Festiwal Dobrego Piwa). On the 2014 events calendar, there’s the PPA (Singing Actors’) The-

In addition, the city can boast a great variety of theatres and theatre groups, including the Wroclaw Opera House, the Puppet Theatre (Teatr Lalek) and the Contemporary Theatre (Teatr Współczesny), as well as opera and film festivals. Oddly enough, Wroclaw has a surprising mascot. the site on which the Kurhaus stands. Everything here speaks of serenity and harmony with the surrounding environment. The renovation work was intended to lend a modern touch to the original building and furnish it with all the comforts of our age, while preserving its naturalistic spirit. Everything has been planned and developed according to geomantic principles: the materials chosen for the interior are the same as those on the exterior of the building – water, like the natural spring water and waterfalls that shape the environs; wood, which stands for the birches and forests surrounding the building; fire, represented by the many chimneys; earth, which inspired the stone inserts; and metal, which recalls the precious natural resources of the local spring water.

he City of Zagreb has a prolific history dating back to the Roman times. It emerged out of two medieval settlements, Kaptol, and neighbouring Gradec, and in 1094 the name ‘Zagreb’ first appeared in writing when the diocese of Kaptol was established. In 1242 Zagreb became a free royal town and in 1669, the Jesuits founded the first Academy resulting in the founding of the University of Zagreb. In 1776, the Croatian Government moved from Varaždin to Zagreb and Zagreb acquired it’s first mayor, Janko Kamauf, in 1851. After Croatia gained independence in 1991, Zagreb became the capital city, emerging as the centre for business, academia, culture, art and sports. What Zagreb has to Offer One can visit the open-air markets such as Dolac and Britanac, visit the many flea markets, stroll through the city and admire the Baroque architecture and influence apparent everywhere. One can take in the sights of the old Upper Town, and take various tours and listen to the colourful history of the city’s residents, past and present. rooftops on the many promenades available. If seeking what is on offer in retail, there are quaint little boutiques and high street stores, riddled throughout the centre of town, or one can go to any of the many shopping malls scattered around the city, such as Kaptol Centar, Arena Centar, City Center One East and West, and Avenue Mall to name just some of them. The gastronomical diversity has also become a focal point for foodies, where one can dabble in the tastes of both traditional domestic cuisine and international. Zagreb has a broad selection of restaurants presenting some of the most wonderful native and foreign dishes and there is something to satisfy every palate. Being a café culture, there are many squares and streets full of coffee shops and bars, eminating the favourite Croatian pass-time of drinking coffee, and good coffee at that. From Ban Jelačić Square and its impressive building which is home to the City Café (Gradska kavana), to Cvijetni Square to Tkalčićeva Street, there are places catering to all tastes, many with an outside area for those who like to see and be seen.

Where to Eat One can find a range of culinary delights in the city, from traditional native foods to world cuisine. The new concept food of ‘Binimoto Sushi’ is taking Zagreb by storm, as well as the Asian fusion food of ‘Wok Matija’, offering fresh lunch alternatives to eat in or take out at decent prices. For the more elegant meal offering, the restaurant ‘Tač’ is one not to be missed, perched up on a hill on the west side of Zagreb, it has been voted the best restaurant in Zagreb, offering Istrian and continental Croatian cuisine. ‘Tač’, depending on the time of year and what is in season, offers Istrian asparagus, truffles, wild rocket lettuce, Istrian beef (boškarin), Dalmatian loin (pečenice), prosciutto ham, kulen-sausage, venison sausages and other specialties. Another not to be missed is the restaurant ‘Vinodol’, a renowned restaurant in the centre of town which offers, besides its famous lamb and veal, a variety of national
specialties such as creamy broccoli or boletes soup, home made pasta with truffles, pastry rolls with cottage cheese, Dalmatian-style rib steak, grilled trout with almonds, royal pancakes, and more. ‘As’ is a restaurant and hotel, situated in the beautiful green setting of Zelengaj, a fewminutes drive from the centre of town and it offers superb fish dishes. At Dolac Market there is the ‘Bistro Amfora’ which offers quality fish and seafood fresh from the market that day. Found downtown is also the chic ‘Bon Appetit’ restaurant, located on the top floor of an office block where the sights of Zagreb can be taken in whilst enjoying dinner. For those with a sweet tooth ‘Slastičarnica Zagreb’ is a delight for the tastebuds with mouth-watering cakes and desserts. There is the classic ‘Vincek’ on the main high street Ilica, and also ‘Torte i to’, located in several places in Zagreb where a cake and a coffee are the norm when in town. Maya Ruff Faullend

A sweeping career retrospective of Russian abstract artist Vassily Kandinsky - until 27.04.2014 - Milan, Palazzo Reale The exhibition consists of over 100 works from the artist, tracing his career from his early days in Russia through to his tenure at the influential Bauhaus school in the 30s, right up until the end of his life in France. Renowned as the first artist to create purely abstract compositions, Kandinsky developed his own visual vocabulary that combined influences ranging from folk art and music to children’s drawings. Viewers can witness the artist’s chronological transformation.
Easter in Italy Italian Festivals and Celebrations for Holy Week - Good Friday and Easter Week Processions Solemn religious processions are held in many towns on the Friday or Saturday before Easter and sometimes on Easter Sunday. Many churches have special statues of the Virgin and Jesus that play a big part in the processions. The statues may be paraded through the city. Parade participants are often dressed in traditional ancient costumes. Enna, in Sicily, has a large procession on Good Friday, with more than 2,000 friars dressed in ancient costumes. Trapani, also in Sicily, is a good place to see processions, held several days during Holy Week. What's believed to be the oldest Good Friday procession in Italy is in Chieti in the Abruzzo region. The procession with Selecchi's Miserere played by 100 violins is very moving. Frida Kahlo 20.03/31.08.2014 Scuderie del Quirinale - Rome The Scuderie del Quirinale hosts a magnificent exhibition on the life and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), a symbol of the artistic avant-garde and of the exuberance of Mexican culture in the 20th century. The exhibition explores the art of Frida Kahlo and her ties with the artistic movements of her time, from Mexican Modernism to international Surrealism, analysing their influence on her work. There can be no doubt that the legend which has grown up around the life and work of Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) has now reached global proportions; the unquestioned icon of 20th century Mexican culture and the seductive subject of a Hollywood movie, Frida Kahlo's contribution to contemporary culture comprises one of the most inextricable tangles of art and life of the whole of the 20th century. 46
Léger 1910 - 1930. The exhibition is dedicated to the French painter Fernand Léger: a mixture of cubism, modernism, avant-garde in the art of Léger, not only a painter but a sculptor and filmmaker too, considered one of the forerunners of the pop art. A great chance for all contemporary art lovers to understand the European avantgarde of the first part of 1900.

TURIN, A PLEASANT SURPRISE own to earth by nature, pragmatic by choice. Once everchanging form necessity, but today just for the pleasure of it. Just a few definitions to define the essence of Turin, capital of the Piedmont Region, which still today maintains the low profile image it has always given of itself. At a first glance, Turin is grey, cold and unattractive, an emblem of Italy’s 1960s economic boom. Cradle of FIAT and top class industries, first class university, today it is not only the “City of action” as it used to. The 2006 winter Olympic Games, an event that placed Turin under the world’s spotlights, made the city conscious of its possibilities and its touristic appeal. This event prompted the city to change course, to embrace the opportunity of a new challenge. The delicate post-Olympic phase was faced with a business-like approach, and today, despite the economic crisis and the uncertainties, Turin is one of the most visited Italian cities. Different from Rome, Florence and Venice but still able to seduce with its own personal charm. The first signs of the new course date back to 2000, the year in which Turin’s historical symbol, the Mole Antonelliana – designed 150 years ago by the talented Alessandro Antonelli – became the “temple” of the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, despite the many reservations. A pioneer of the Seventh art since the end of the 19th century, custodian of the rare pre-cinema of Maria Adriana Prolo, featuring the very “effective” set up by the Geneva architect François Confino, today one Italy’s best loved Museums. More than eight centuries of the Savoia rule, a dynasty of French origin that in 1563 transferred its headquarters from Chambéry to Turin and in 1861 made Turin the capital of the United Italy, have given the city a unique and distinguished style. We have only to take a walk along the twelve kilometre long arcade that unfolds across the historical city centre to perceive the sense of nobility and an-

cient elegance of Turin’s enviable artistic and architectural heritage. Step by step, from Piazza Castello along Via Po as far as Piazza Vittorio and the natural hilly backdrop; or along via Roma and the cobblestone pavement of the aristocratic Piazza San Carlo… everywhere the stylistic compactness of Turin’s Baroque style stands out. Interpreted by great architects such as Guarino Guarini, the Modenese abbot who designed the airy volumes of the San Lorenzo e Filippo Juvarra church, the architect from Messina who designed the majestic Reggia di Venaria – one of the pearls in the Savoia Residencies circuit part of the Unesco Heritage – and of the dome of the Duomo, designed to accommodate the Holy Shroud. On the Bicentenary of the birth of San Giovanni Bosco, there will be a new and much awaited ostension of Holy Shroud from Easter to August 2015. Every year Turin is rich of surprises. The fame of the Quadrilatero Romano is well established, the area around Via Garibaldi that outlined the original Roman castrum, a lively maze of alleys and small squares with restaurants and cafes open till late at night, or the new Polo Reale which radiates from the Piazza Castello, emblem of the Savoia power (www.poloreale.beniculturali.it).
Here, with a single ticket, we can relive pages and pages of the city’s history, with the adjoining Biblioteca that preserves the Leonardo drawings, the Armeria Reale (considered to be the most beautiful in Europe), Palazzo and Giardini Reali and the new Galleria Sabauda that recently moved with a new setup in the new Manica of the residence, not to mention the Museo Archeologico that has among its masterpieces the Roman silver found at Marengo. Palazzo Chiablese too has been added to this itinerary. In January, the Palazzo inaugurated service and exhibition spaces, where until the end of April the exhibition ‘Doppio sogno. Pittura e scultura al polo reale di Torino’ welcomes visitors on a journey through a collection of 20th century paintings. All these sites are close to the imposing Palazzo Madama, the residence designed by Juvarra, which rose from the original Porta Pretoria, with its curious medieval garden recreated in the moat, that in its Museo d’Arte Antica summarizes the evolution of Turin from the Roman era to the modern day. Palazzo Madama is one of the pillars of the Fondazione Musei Civici (www.fondazionetorinmusei.it), an institution also coordinating the activities of GAM, the prestigious Modern art gallery, of the Borgo Medievale, that faithfully repro-

Close by, is Turin’s Egyptian Museum (second only to the one in Cairo) that in 2015 will have completed its restyling and set up renovation in time for the Milano Expo2015 where Piedmont will also take a prominent part, little more than a thirty minute train ride from the designated headquarters. Those who feel taken aback by this over dose of culture and history in the “serious” Turin are sure to find other more mundane pleasures around the city! Pleasures of the palate, to start with: in the well-known restaurants and in the “piole” (old taverns that still survive today in the hidden spots of the historic centre of the city) and at the Balon, the traditional flea market, for example. Or in wine bars frequented by the young, a Turin version of Parisian bistros. The historic cafés are typical subalpine glories, bearers of a tradition that numbered more than one hundred between the 18th and 19th century, traditional meeting places (like the tiny Mulassano or the refined Platti) where patriots and intellectuals used to meet, now perfectly in tune with modern times. A pause for coffee, or to sip an aperitif or a Turin special vermouth, or to enjoy the reborn “bicerin” so much liked by Dumas (a hot drink with cof-
fee, cream and chocolate), all accompanied by fine patisserie. Not to mention hot chocolate, a delight served in a cup, a typical Turin tradition that has been handed down for years. The once occasional exhibitions and events now follow each other nonstop throughout the year. In spring the important Torino Jazz festival (this year from 25 April to 1 May) offering free and paying concerts. In summer, more music, classical this time, at the Festival dedicated to Mozart. During the fall, Turin is home to Mi-To, Settembre Musica, and in November, art in all its forms takes centre stage, with Artissima, one of the most important contemporary art exhibitions in Europe and Paratissima, a showcase for emergent artists. A theme also used by Luci d’Artista which paves the way for the events for old and young during A Torino un natale coi fiocchi (a Christmas events programme) and until January fills the city with lights designed by well-known authors. This will be the backdrop for Torino incontra Berlino (Turin meets Berlin) programmed until November 2015. A rich and interesting programme.

EXPO MILANO 2015: THE SWISS PRESENCE Expo Milano 2015 is centrally important for Switzerland because of its geographical, cultural and economic proximity to Italy. The Swiss participation is a unique chance to present Switzerland with its cultural and geographical diversity, its research capacity, innovativeness and economic potential. rom 1 May to 31 October 2015 the Expo will take place in Milan on the theme of nutrition. The right to sufficient, secure and healthy nutrition is a major challenge worldwide, one that Switzerland is tackling in research and development projects and in its activities in the agricultural and food sectors. The organisers expect about 20 million visitors, with 25% (5 million) coming from abroad, 40% of them (2 million) from Switzerland. Already 80 countries have confirmed their participation. The Federal Council regards the Expo in our neighbouring country Italy as very important. Italy is our second largest trade partner, and Switzerland is Italy's eighth largest partner. The volume of bilateral trade in 2011 amounted to about CHF 35 billion. The total budget for Switzerland's participation is CHF 23.1 million. Presence Switzerland has already received

a few major commitments. The cantons of Graubünden, Valais, Uri and Ticino as well as the towns of Basle, Geneva and Zürich have confirmed that they will make a joint presentation in the Swiss Pavilion, provided that this is approved by their respective parliaments. A number of companies have already promised to support the Swiss presentation in Milan. Other leading companies have also expressed strong interest. They will make definite commitments after the decision by the Swiss Parliament on the credit for the Swiss participation at Expo 2015 in Milan. By means of its presentation in Milan, Switzerland aims to raise its profile in Italy and to increase bilateral cooperation in the area of infrastructure as well as in the fields of politics and the economy, especially the food sector. The Swiss participation will communicate an image of Switzerland's
diversity and will clearly point out its strengths. A study of the image of Switzerland carried out in 2011 in Italy showed that Italians are more critical of Switzerland than of other countries and that their image of Switzerland is dominated by stereotypes. The Swiss Pavilion The central focus of the winning Confoederatio Helvetica“ project is the global availability and distribution of food. The project also prompts visitors to reflect on their own consumption behaviour. The aim is to present Switzerland as attractive, responsible and showing solidarity in connection with the theme of food. The Swiss Pavilion will be located in a favourable strategic position close to the Italian pavilion. The framework programme „Verso l’Expo Milano 2015“ To ensure a more long-term presence

The aim is to strengthen bilateral relations and to raise the awareness of the Italian public about Switzerland’s innovativeness and its cultural and
linguistic diversity. The Pro Helvetia programme “Lombardia transalpina 2014” will also be included as an important element in this framework programme. The opening of the Gotthard base tunnel in 2016 will also be a valuable platform for continuing the close co-operation in the framework of the World Exhibition. Andrea Arcidiacono

PLAYING AT THE ROMA ACQUASANTA GOLF CLUB Rome offers golf lovers 8 golf courses with 18 holes and up, so a golfer who has come to the Eternal City to see the sights should by rights also find the time to play the 18 holes at the Acquasanta Golf Club. The very first golf course built in Italy, back in 1903, alongside the Appian Way Park, combines archaeological ruins from ancient Rome, majestic pine trees, and the gorgeous greenery of the Roman countryside. An unforgettable 18-hole experience in a uniquely beautiful setting, especially that of the 7th hole. ho really ever thinks of Rome when considering a golf holiday? Very few, statistics say, perhaps because the Eternal City is so lovely, with its array of sights and artworks and its absolutely unique setting, that it seems frankly inappropriate to come to a place like Rome just to play golf. It’s a matter of sensory overload, with a tourist’s appetites sated by seeing the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, St. Peter’s Square, the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican and its famed museums, the ubiquitous traces of Imperial Rome dotted throughout the city, as well as – for the romantics – the Span-

ish Steps and Piazza Navona. That said, for those who’d like to combine a tour of Rome with a round or two of golf, even for just a half day at a time, we can highly recommend a number of golf clubs, since many premier golf courses are conveniently located near the centre of Rome. With its eight 18-hole-plus golf courses, Rome has what it takes to be tapped for a marvellous, richly rewarding week of golf and sightseeing. And the city’s mild climate all year long, with its golf courses in pristine condition partially thanks to the weather, certainly gives Rome a leg up in the rankings of golf tourism
destinations. Scattered inside and just outside the city’s ring road, with some only minutes away from the centre, Rome’s golf offerings, featuring modern and historic venues, are tempting indeed. As we said at the outset, golf itself came to Italy in 1903, right on the Appian Way, at the Roma Acquasanta Golf Club, a must for golfers when in Rome, with its 18 holes on an undulating expanse of green with stunning views of the surroundings. The Roma Acquasanta Golf Club’s address is 716 Appian Way, and its name comes from the neighbourhood called Acquasanta, or “holy water”, af-

ter what the ancients believed to be the healing properties of the water gushing from the spring located near the present golf course. The setting is breathtakingly Roman: century-old umbrella pines line the fairways, not far from many of the holes, and the undulating terrain is dotted with pines and cypresses around the well-manicured fairways, crossed in places by the Almone River, sacred to the ancient Romans; the reasonably-sized greens are fast yet demanding. The relatively short golf course, 5,854m-long, par 71, is overlooked by the Club House, which surveys the valley where the course is sit-

uated, and is a lovely building itself, with its fine workmanship and its colours that match those of the traditional Roman country homes nearby. Without a doubt, Acquasanta, with its superb setting, is the most gorgeous golf course in Rome. The seventh hole, with its dogleg measuring 489m from right to left, is spectacular; no where else in the world can you see the century-old pine trees and lush greenery that forms the backdrop to the arches of the Claudian aqueduct built in 52 A.D., rising majestically in the background. But every inch of the Roma Acquasanta golf course is steeped in history: it was laid
out in an important archaeological area, on the spot where Herodes Atticus, tutor to the emperor Marcus Aurelius, had built an enormous villa in the second century A.D. It would hardly be surprising, indeed, if a stray ball landed outside the fairway and alerted the experts to some uncharted ancient ruin. The last few holes on the course outdo everything seen before in this unforgettable corner of the Roman campagna, and all holes lead to the Club House and its umbrella pines, the spectacular end of a historic golfer’s itinerary that is in a class by itself. Crafted by the world’s greatest architectural minds, Saadiyat Cultural District in Abu Dhabi is set to become an internationally renowned arts hub, featuring the Zayed National Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Performing Arts Centre, with the following opening dates: Louvre Abu Dhabi in 2015, Zayed National Museum in 2016 and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi in 2017. Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), the entity behind the Saadiyat Island development in Abu Dhabi, confirmed that these institutions are strategic components of the Abu Dhabi Government’s

vision for the Emirate and this timeline has been finalised in close coordination with its partners and advisors, Agence France Muséums, The British Museum, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The Abu Dhabi Executive Council stated that “the museums of the Saadiyat Cultural District will help to establish Abu Dhabi as one the world’s leading tourism and cultural destinations, and will encourage communication between different cultures.” HE Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of TDIC commented on the significance of the announcement saying: “Saadiyat Cultural District will create a cultural destination that will repeatedly attract visitors from the world of arts and culture. The museums will facilitate the development of cultural leaders and experts through education and employment. In turn this will integrate culture and arts into the daily life of the community, assisting to value, sustain and preserve the cultural heritage.” TDIC explained that due to the immense magnitude of the Saadiyat Cultural District, careful planning has been undertaken to ensure the sustainability of the institutions. These opening dates give each museum sufficient time to establish its own identity on the local and international cultural stage. Born of an agreement between the governments of the United Arab Emirates and France, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will display paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, manuscripts and objects of historical, cultural and sociological significance from the ancient to the contemporary. It will be a place of education and dialogue between the cultures, bearing a humanistic and universal message. Spanning millennia, the works of art on display will originate from societies and cultures all over the world, but universal themes and common influences will be highlighted to illustrate similarities and differences arising from shared human experience transcending geography, nationality and history. Designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Jean Nouvel, Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to be the first Universal museum in the Arab World, and will showcase
art from different civilisations and cultures. The most distinctive feature of Louvre Abu Dhabi is its 180-metre diameter dome, with intricate perforations, designed to resemble rays of sunlight passing through date palm fronds and diffusing light below. Acquisitions for the permanent collection of the Louvre Abu Dhabi have already been announced. More pieces of art are currently being revealed in a public programme, Louvre Abu Dhabi: Talking Art Series in the form of a series of nine monthly lectures at Manarat Al Saadiyat, the art and exhibition center already opened in the Saadiyat Cultural District. An institution conceived as a place for discussion, learning, and inspiration, Zayed National Museum will tell the story of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s life, while exploring the history and culture of the UAE. Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Lord Norman Foster designed the museum and its distinctive towers are reminiscent of the wing tips of the falcon, a powerful symbol of the cultural heritage of the UAE. Zayed National Museum will have seven permanent gallery displays as well as a temporary exhibition programme and library. TDIC is currently completing a series of research trips with the British Museum involving meetings across the nation’s seven Emirates with UAE experts and institutions. The visits have revealed a wealth of information and artifacts stretching back as far as 2000 BCE that will support the compilation of other relevant resources for the museum including documents, film, images, sound and archival material. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is lied to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, which promotes the understanding and appreciation of art, primarily of the modern and contemporary periods, through exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications. The global network that began in the 1970s when the Solomon Guggenheim Museum, New York, was joined by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, has expanded to include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (opened 1997), the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin (1997– 61

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be a museum that promotes the understanding and appreciation of contemporary art, architecture, and other manifestations of modern and contemporary visual culture from an international perspective. The museum will support a transnational curatorial program of art and visual culture from the 1960s to the present with a strong focus on art from

LAUSANNE: SPORT IS MY BUSINESS fter doing without its Olympic Museum for roughly two years – the museum that opened in 1993 and has been an emblem of the city ever since – Lausanne, the City of the Five Rings, can head into 2014 safe in the knowledge that it’s got its history back. The fourth-ranked Swiss museum in terms of visitors reopened last December after undergoing a complex, radical restyling, providing this pleasant city on the sunny shores of Lake Léman (better known as Lake Geneva), framed by the Alps and the rolling Lavaux vineyards, and a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2007, with a newfound burst of adrenaline.

Just half an hour by train from the Geneva airport, this small capital of the Vaud region is also the cradle of sports and the Olympic movement, thanks to the French baron Pierre de Coubertin who almost singlehandedly relaunched the spirit of the ancient Olympic games in 1894 and founded the International Olympic Committee (Ioc). To protect this movement/ideal/institution from the perils of the First World War, the baron moved its headquarters and archives from Paris to Lausanne in 1915. And in a crescendo of celebratory events, after that of the 150th anniversary of De Coubertin’s birth in 2013 – although the baron is buried in Lau-
sanne’s historic Bois-de-Vaux cemetery, his heart is interred in a monument at ancient Olympia in Greece itself – the reopening of the Olympic Museum is a fine excuse for holding the centenary of the Ioc in Lausanne, which falls in 2015 – another selling point for the Swiss city, candidate for the Youth Olympic Games in 2020. Multimedialism, technology and interactivity: these are the hallmarks of the new museum (www.olympic.org/ musee), spread over 3,000 sq m, with over 1,000 exhibits on three different themed levels. The first retraces the history and evolution of the modern-day Olympic movement in society and the

Sport since 2006; a bronze statue in its garden, “Perpetual Motion” by Shu Duofo, embodies the dynamic spirit of Lausanne. Sports are much more than an ideal, however, in this city of just 136,000 inhabitants that thinks like, and acts like, a large metropolis. Dynamism is in the Lausanners’ DNA, and so is the ability to organise dozens of high-profile competitive events month in and month out. Between 1998 and 2012, 26 European or world championships in a wide range of sports were held here, and hotly-anticipated international sports events every year include Athletissima (July 3, www.athletissima.ch ) and the Lausanne Marathon (October 24, www.lausanne-marathon. com ), with over 14,000 runners signing up for the last edition. Counting the economic spin-off, the business of sports generates 198 million francs annually. Yes, the small capital of the Canton of Vaud is a real dynamo, in perpetual motion. Sports and the arts team up with Lausanne’s quite evident political vocation as well; the city supports 70
everything that is eco-sustainable and safeguards its residents’ health and environment. The city’s far-sighted energy policy made it the first European city to earn the “European Energy Award ® Gold” in 2004 and again in 2009. The lake is an open-air gymnasium, with its waters fit for swimming, diving, and sailing, on solar poweredboats, should that strike your fancy, or steamboats with their retro appeal. Walking in the city centre means hiking up and down its paved mediaeval streets, where most people are on foot or on bicycles, with the result that every stroll saves you a toning workout at the gym! The alternative is Lausanne’s ultra-modern, driverless underground, which takes passengers from the lakeshore at Ouchy to the crests of the hills circling the city. Few can resist the temptation to board the trains with their bikes, skates and skateboards, and then ride back down from the end of the line on their own wheels. This year, Lausanne’s devotion to the environment materialises in the return of an event that comes roughly every
five years, one of its most popular. Lausanne Jardins (www.lausannejardins. ch), is an international exhibition, now going into its fifth edition, which is an occasion to showcase not just the decorative appeal of urban greenery, but also its educational and social aspects. And Lausanne can boast 350 hectares of parks. From June to October, going by the name Landing in 2014, Lausanne Jardins will serve as the testing ground for close encounters between the plant world and today’s urban reality. An international competition selects the teams that will design 25 parks or gardens all over the city. Architects, landscape architects and designers from around the world are presenting their own projects: green installations; innovative garden solutions, public or private; ways to enhance the urban experience. When the event is over, a few of these 25 projects will not be dismantled but will become permanent additions to Lausanne’s greenery, boosting its considerable botanical holdings and setting the city’s architecture off to its best advantage.

over 50 museums of which 14 are dedicated to art. The museum of fine arts, the Kunsthaus Zurich, boasts a significant collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs and video installations. In addition, it has an extensive and unique collection of works by Alberto Giacometti. Another highlight is the Rietberg Museum, one of the leading centers of non-European art, particularly from India, China and Africa. And just a stone’s throw from Zurich’s main station, the Swiss National Museum contains the country’s most comprehensive collection of exhibits related to Swiss cultural history. Within its over 100-year-old walls, reminiscent of a fairytale castle, history becomes alive as visitors gain an insight into how previous generations lived, thought and felt. The Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s shopping mile, has contributed largely to the city’s reputation as a hot-spot for shoppers. The pedestrian-friend-
ly shopping zone is one of the most beautiful shopping areas in Europe with countless top addresses for international fashion labels, jewelry and watches. However, it is just one of the places where you can shop till you drop. Adventurous and curious visitors often come across local brands where they least expect them. Urban labels from Zurich inspire the fashion-conscious and create sensations far beyond Switzerland’s borders – as has for example the cult label ‘Freitag’, with its unique style of bags and accessories. Zurich’s Old Town with its medieval gilded houses and contorted, narrow lanes offers an attractive backdrop for world-class cultural entertainment. A tour of the ‘Niederdorf’ lets visitors experience Zurich’s multifaceted past. The double towers of the Grossmünster for example are a Zurich landmark. According to the legend, Charlemagne built the towers at the

In this picture, Bellinzona by night, Canton of Ticino. The Montebello castle is part of the extensive fortifications originating from the 12th to the 15th centuries, which are now part of the Unesco world cultural heritage.
f the eleven Swiss sites that have made it onto the list of Unesco World Heritage sites, two are found in the Canton of Ticino. One is an ensemble of castles in Bellinzona, inscribed on the list in 2000, since the fortified ensemble of Bellinzona is an outstanding example of a late medieval defensive structure guarding a key strategic Alpine pass. The other is Monte San Giorgio, added to the Unesco list in 2003 (with Unesco status extended to the portion of the mountain in Italy in 2010), the motivation being that this site is the single best known record of marine life in the Triassic period, and records important remains of life on land as well. Three Castles of Bellinzona The fortified ensemble of Bellinzone is a unique example of European architecture erected in defence of the feudal structure guarding a key strategic Alpine pass. The Bellinzone ensemble is the sole remaining example in the entire Alpine region of medieval military architecture, comprising three castles, a wall that once closed off the whole Ticino valley, and the ramparts which surrounded the town for the protection of its citizens. Bellinzone owes its origins to its strategic position controlling access, via the Ticino valley, to the main Alpine passes into the Milanese, i.e. the whole north of Italy. In the 10th century, Bellinzone formed part of the possessions of Otto I, founder of the Holy Roman Empire. The earliest constructions still extant probably date from around this period. Around the year 1000, the castle and the county were granted by the emperor to the Bishop of Como. It was at this period that the interior of the castle of Castelgrande was divided up to accommodate houses, turning it into a small fortified town. In the 12th century, Frederick Barbarossa took possession of the fortress. The town grew up gradually around the citadel and the fortifications were improved. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, the town expanded around the castle. The Castle of Montebello was built around 1300 and soon incorporated into the system of fortifications. The Castle of Sas-

so Corbaro built in 1480 to the south-east of Castelgrande. Bellinzone became part of the state of Milan under the rule of the Visconti, who strengthened its defences considerably and began the construction of a wall running from Castelgrande to block the Ticino valley: the wall was known as the Murata. At the beginning of the 16th century, Bellinzone fell to the confederates, and the fortifications lost much of their importance but were not destroyed. In 1803, Castelgrande was used as prison and an arsenal. The modern town developed at the expense of the ramparts. In 1882, the arsenal was extended. In the 20th century the major restoration work began. The Castelgrande is the largest of the three fortresses and dominates the town from its rocky eminence with its two towers, known as the White and Black Towers respectively. The spacious interior is divided by internal walls radiating out from the Black Tower into three courtyards. The White Tower, to the east, is surrounded by its own set of fortifications, known as the Redoubt. The arsenal consists of a series of massive buildings on the western side of the south courtyard. The enceinte has two chapels, but only their foundations still survive. Montebello Castle lies on a rocky spur to the east of Castelgrande, with which it is linked by the town walls; unlike Castelgrande, it is surrounded by deep moats. Its core is the central keep, from the end of the 13th century, which was given additional protection in the form of new defensive walls in the mid-14th and late 15th centuries. Sasso Corbaro Castle does not form part of the defensive perimeter of Bellinzone: it covers a vulnerable approach route. It is square in plan, the keep jutting out on the northeastern corner and rising slightly above the level of the crenellated walls. Some two-thirds of the original line of the Town Ramparts still survive, with interval towers, but the gates have disappeared. Monte San Giorgio Monte San Giorgio is a pyramid-shaped, wooded mountain, which lies south of

I SITI UNESCO IN CANTON TICINO

Lake Lugano in Ticino Canton. The site contains internationally important fossil remains from the Middle Triassic period. San Giorgio lies within an area identified as a Landscape Protection Zone under Swiss law. The Mid Triassic rock succession rests on older, Permian volcanic rocks exposed on the north face of Monte San Giorgio. The Mid Triassic sequence consists of approximately 1,000 m of reef limestones, dolomites and bituminous shales which formed in marine conditions on the margins of the Triassic 'Tethys' Ocean. The exceptional fossil interest within the sequence arises because of the presence of five distinct, fossiliferous formations, the 'Grenzbitumenzone', the Cava Inferiore, Cava Superiore, Cassina Beds and the 'Kalkschieferzone'. The sequence records life in a tropical lagoon environment, sheltered and partially separated from the open sea by an offshore reef. A diversity of marine life flourished within this lagoon, in-

cluding reptiles, fish, bivalves, ammonites, echinoderms and crustaceans. A stagnant and undisturbed seabed provided ideal conditions for the preservation of these animals, when they died and fell to the sea floor. Today, fossils are abundant and exceptionally detailed. Because the lagoon was near to land, the fossil remains also include some landbased fossils including reptiles, insects and plants. The fossiliferous rock succession is exposed in Switzerland on Monte San Giorgio as well as in the immediately adjacent area of Italy, in the area around Besano. Fossils from the mountain have been known to science for over 150 years. The vertebrate material includes particularly spectacular specimens, including large, articulated skeletons up to 6 m in length. Complete skeletons include ichthyosaurs, nothosaurs, placodonts, and the remarkable 'giraffe-necked' saurian, Tanystropheus. The land-based fauna is more restricted, but includes a significant and
unique complete skeleton of the archosaur, Ticinosuchus, the first complete skeleton from this group to be discovered in the northern hemisphere. Although it is primarily of geological significance, Monte San Giorgio also displays other natural values, as well as cultural links between the geology and the life of the local community. Noteworthy features include dry meadows on limestone subsoils that are home to plant populations not found elsewhere in Switzerland or in the entire southern Alpine zone of Italy. The site is rich in fungi and has 37 of the modern vertebrate species on the national Red List, 21 of which are protected under the Berne Convention. Monte San Giorgio is unique in the world as the best single fossil record of Triassic marine life. The strict, systematic and continuous scientific research that has been carried out for over 75 years in Switzerland and Italy, almost exclusively by the universities of Zurich and Mi-
lan, have resulted in a remarkably complete and coordinated record of the site. The site is in the ownership of three different local communes. Around 10% is cultivated, privately owned land, mostly near Meride and Riva San Vitale. The presence of five distinct fossiliferous levels provides the opportunity for comparative and evolutionary studies through time. Other significant Triassic fossil sites of equivalent international importance provide evidence of terrestrial, rather than marine life. The quantity and quality of fossil biota enables interpretation of species evolution, palaeo-environments and landforming processes that existed 200 million years ago. The site provides a record of marine life during a critical period in vertebrate evolution on Earth, and has an importance that extends beyond representation of life in the Triassic 'Tethys' Ocean, to provide a global reference point for comparative studies of evolution.

of the event. There will be plenty to write about! To mark the 200th anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between Russian and Switzerland, the ambassador of the Russian Federation will be the patron of the event. A complete Russian polo team will be arriving from Moscow (all players are members of the President Polo Club,
Moscow). Saturday night will be entirely Russian-themed and titled “Russia meets Switzerland”. The Poloclub Ascona and championship sponsors will be inviting everyone to a “Russian night” on the polo field. Just like last year’s Indian-themed event, this year will have Russian decorations, food and, of course, drink. It is our firm intention to fascinate our guests
POLO IN ASCONA From 18 to 20 July 2014, an international polo championship will be held for the fifth time in the Ticino. With Hublot as headline partner, Engel & Voelkers, Styger & Partner, Podium, Bentley by Loris Kessel, FIPA Yachten and many more prestigious sponsors, this promises to be a truly high-class event.

Most polo activities are concentrated in Moscow and its two polo clubs. Imported Argentinian polo ponies, employment of Argentinian professionals and grooms, and the organisation of championships (even in the winter) has caused the sport to de-

FOCUS ON PRIVATE BANKING BSI’s forecasts for private banking in 2014 ounded in Lugano in 1873, BSI is the oldest bank in the Canton Ticino, currently managing assets of 89.4 million francs (as of 30 June 2013). As far as private banking is concerned, BSI’s advice for 2014 is to build up portfolios that are highly diversified by asset class (cash, bonds, stocks, or commodities), while supplementing them with investments that have asymmetric return profiles (convertible bonds and structured products). “When buying bonds, our best advice is short-term investments and diversified investment vehicles (funds) so absolute return strategies can be adopted,” suggests Franco Polloni, Head of BSI’s Private Banking Division for Switzerland, and he points out that, compared to 2013, this year the yield spread on the markets should be lower: “the emerging stock and bond markets are showing clear signs that they are undervalued with respect to developed markets. Local currencies have already taken a big hit, and the central banks are responding by raising rates to fight speculation and allow for all the macro adjustments needed. So the emerging markets are once again seeing the creation of those ‘carry’ and ‘value’ conditions that are expected to attract investor confidence, even if not in the immediate future.” BSI also reports that, for the first time in months, with the financial market corrections taking place over the past few weeks, U.S. government bonds and gold are once more safe-haven investments. As for those private investors who are wondering whether or not they should increase their ‘risk sharing’ for their own portfolios, Franco Polloni points out that stock market valuations are less of a good deal than they used to be; overall, returns on investments in those markets were positive in 2013. “In 2014, the Fed will gradually eliminate the monetary stimuli while keeping official rates at zero. We can there-

fore predict a positive trend for the stock markets, but there will be no more double-digit yields. There will be many more corrections, and more sizeable ones. It’s a good idea to wait for adjustments of at least 10% before increasing the risk for one’s own portfolios.” As far as the most promising investment sectors for 2014, BSI mentions cyclical stocks (industrial, technological and financial), rather than the defensive ones on the stock listings, and predicts that the emerging markets should recover as the year goes on, while after the fall in gold prices in 2013, gold will once again represent a solid investment opportunity. Looking ahead, BSI stresses the fact that the valuations for the U.S. stock markets are higher than those for other countries, as Franco Polloni explains: “In the U.S., stock shares rest on profit levels that are even now well above trend, while in Europe and Japan, corporate profits are still below
2007 levels, especially in the eurozone’s peripheral countries. In any case, the crisis is easing in the eurozone, and some countries are implementing reforms in the labour market and products themselves. Moreover, starting from such low levels, the upside potential for profits is higher for the countries in the eurozone and Japan than it is for the U.S., and consequently the comeback potential for their stock markets is higher as well. As far as as the bond component of an investor’s portfolio is concerned, it’s a good idea to choose short-term maturity profiles and also be very selective when deciding which companies to invest in. On the high-yield stock front, our best advice is highly diversified funds that invest in short-term stocks.” Franco Polloni also points out that there are “two elements that make the search for high-dividend stocks less attractive. On one hand, with bond yields improving, there is less inter-

est in the fact that dividend yields are picking up. On the other, over the past year investors have been willing to take more risks, and they’re looking at more speculative non-dividend stocks.” Lastly, Polloni suggests that the rotation from bonds to equity that started a year ago will continue in 2014 as well. “Retail investors, for their part, will continue to boost their asset allocation in stocks, given the fact that their portfolios are still mostly bondheavy. By contrast, institutional investors and pension funds will continue to be attracted to investment in bonds, and will exploit the higher yields to guarantee that their assets and liabilities match up on their balance sheets.” Elena Steiger Left, Franco Polloni, Head of BSI’s Private Banking Division for Switzerland.
