Planting for the Next Generation Many of us in recent years have been introduced to the concept of invasive insect pests — think Spotted Lanternfly, Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, or the Emerald Ash Borer. These insects are brought in from different areas of the world, often inadvertently in shipping containers, and end up spreading widely across the United States because they lack predators to keep them in check, or they have the ability to expand aggressively. Did you know that the same thing happens with plants? Believe it or not, the difference with invasive plants is that they are often introduced to the U.S. deliberately by well-meaning people and horticulturalists. Invasive plants exist in the northeast for various reasons, such as agriculture, or simply because they are very ornamental. (Yes, because we think they are pretty!) Even the ubiquitous weed, the dandelion, is not native to North America, having been brought over on the Mayflower to be used for medicinal benefits (and maybe to make wine, too). All non-native plants are not necessarily invasive. Some non-native species play nicely with others and do not wreak havoc on their new home environments. They are often not as adapted to the area as their native counterparts and may require more care or watering. More and more, those of us in the plant industry learn the benefits of native plant material, and each year, more and more native species become available in the nursery trade. In contrast, more truly invasive plant species are banned from being propagated and sold. Banning invasive species is a trend I applaud and that myself and other Gasper employees champion here at Gasper. Native species provide so many benefits. They tend to be better adapted to survive in our climate, which means less watering and fewer chemicals needed for them to thrive. They also provide food, pollen, and nectar for our native bees, birds, and wildlife. We have a great article on page 42 to help you with some suitable native replacements for common invasive plant species, and I’m sure that our nursery associates would be happy to point out native selections on your next visit. As many of you might know, last December, my husband Dave and I brought a beautiful baby into the world. Dave and I are also avid hikers who love to be out in the natural environment whenever we can. As new parents, we, of course, want the best future for our baby, which includes taking care of the environment. So in honor of Earth Day, which we celebrate this month, next time you are in the Garden Center, I would encourage you to think about taking home a native plant species, such as Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia) which is one of my favorites.

Colorful Annuals What are Annuals? Plants classed as annuals are those which complete their life cycle within one year, or are not winter hardy. Annuals are some of our most useful garden flowers. Within a rainbow of available color choices, an almost endless supply of forms and sizes, and the ability to bloom the entire growing season; annuals have a place in any garden.

Best Time to Plant If at all possible, plant in early morning, early evening, or on a cloudy day. Avoid planting during the hottest part of the day. This protects newly planted annuals from having sun stress as they’re settling into their new environment. If you choose to tackle planting chores in the evening, you will give plants the overnight period to adjust to their new surroundings.

Mix the Soil Mix a good compost like Bumper Crop Organic Soil Builder with soil you place in a bucket. Use a ratio of 1 part Bumper Crop Organic Soil Builder to 2 parts removed soil. Mix in 4 heaping tablespoons of fertilizer per 1 gallon of soil. Use an organic probiotic fertilizer like Dr. Earth Rose and Flower Food. Mix the soil thoroughly inside the bucket.

Watering When all of your annuals are planted, water them with a gentle spray. This will water the plants without disturbing them. If you notice the next day that the soil has settled and exposed some of the roots, add more soil around the roots. Annuals tend to have shallow root systems so you may need to check them for dryness more frequently than other types of plants.

Continued Care Your annuals will need daily water for about a week to be established, then water as necessary. Many annuals want water daily, where others can skip a day or two. The water needs of your annuals vary with the weather, the season, and sun exposure. You must make appropriate adjustments as the weather changes.

Vegetable Growing Tips Light: Full Sun — most veggies like at least eight hours of direct sun per day. Soil: Healthy, rich soil is the key to a successful and productive vegetable garden. A soil test will give you an idea of your soil fertility and pH. You can add soil amendments and fertilizers to your soil until it is up to par. Plants: If it is your first garden, it is usually best to pick four or five types of vegetables and grow them well, rather than to try to cram everything into a small space. However, if you start with spring lettuce then you can sow another crop (such as summer beans) in its place following harvest. Water, Weed, and Feed: Newly seeded beds will need frequent watering, but more established crops can get by on one to two inches of water per week. Tropicals love to be center stage in any arrangement with their tropical foliage (Palms or Elephant Ears), their showy flowers (Hibiscus or Mandevilla) or their heady fragrance (Gardenias or Jasmine). We think that the addition of that tropical plant palette is the quickest way to make your backyard living space feel like you are vacationing at a tropical resort.

Since we have to keep our tropical plants in containers in the Northeast it is very important to remember that they need to be fertilized during the summer months. Tropical plants require different nutritional needs than other plants, to keep them deep green and healthy. We use Dr. Earth Palm, Tropical & Hibiscus Fertilizer. This blend is designed to meet the exacting requirements of tropical and subtropical plants. During the growing season (April through August) you should fertilize at least once a month. Remember, your plants have no way to obtain nutrients outside of the pot. At the end of the summer, if you have space indoors, you can treat tropicals like a house plant and bring them inside. Otherwise, tropicals should be treated like other annual plants and replaced each spring and summer. Treat yourself to the alluring scents and blooms of Lilacs

ilacs (Syringa) may bring cherished memories of our grandmothers who cared for a lilac shrub, and that nostalgia factor may be one of the reasons you may plant one in your own garden. Whatever the reason may be, lilacs are some of the hardiest and most fragrant flowering shrubs that we can use in our gardens. They come in shades of purple, pink and white and in varying heights up to ten feet tall. Most only bloom for a few weeks each year, but some new varieties are re-blooming, such as ‘Bloomerang’. Lilacs prefer full sun, and you will get the most blooms and a better fragrance from your blooms in full sun. They attract butterflies and hummingbirds and make good cut flowers. The common lilac, Syringa vulgaris, blooms in the northern

states for two weeks from mid-spring to late spring; right around Mother’s Day. However, there are early-season, midseason, and late-season lilacs, which, when grown together, ensure a steady bloom for at least six weeks. Have you ever driven down a country road and seen a random lilac bush or two? These are most likely from a house or farm that is no longer there from the last century. Lilacs are known for their long lives and hardy nature and many live to be more than 100-years-old. Because of this, many often survive longer than the home of the gardener that planted them. If you don’t have one in your garden, give one a try. They give you a show for your eyes with the colorful blooms and treat your nose with their sweet scents.

What is an invasive plant?

hen a plant is labeled invasive, it means that the plant has been determined to spread aggressively to the detriment of the environment in which it is planted. Often invasive plants are non-native species that lack natural predators to keep them in check or are just able to out-compete native species. This often becomes an issue because the plants are able to grow out of control and often form large masses of only the invasive species. Like Maiden Grass? Once a very popular ornamental grass, Japanese Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis) has been found to spread aggressively in Pennsylvania natural areas via its seed.

This reduces habitat and food sources for native species of animals, birds, pollinators and insects. Invasive species are often some of our worst weeds and can become maintenance nightmares for homeowners, think Canada thistle or nut sedge. Not all invasive plants are ‘weedy’. Sometimes ornamental species with very showy flowers or leaf color are introduced and grown for the nursery trade and unfortunately turn out to be invasive. Use this instead: Panicium virgatum ‘Northwind’ (switchgrass) Panicium is a North American native tall grass. It likes both wet and dry soils in full sun. It is a stiff, columnar grass with its seed panicles able to reach up to 6' tall. Other varieties of Panicium to try include ‘Heavy Metal’ which has a bluish tinge and ‘Shenandoah’ which has a reddish tinge to its blade tips.

Loved by homeowners for its red leaf color, this non-native shrub is now invading our native PA forests and has recently been banned for use in Pennsylvania. Plus, it has thorns! I mean, who really wants to deal with finger-pricking thorns every time it needs to be pruned?

While Weigela is not a native alternative, it is not known to be an aggressive spreader. Weigela ‘Spilled Wine’ has a dark reddish leaf color that is reminiscent of barberry. It is a petite shrub only growing 2' high by 2–3' wide and is covered with bright pink, tubular flowers in the spring. Other varieties to try include ‘Wine & Roses’ which is a large-sized shrub ‘Midnight Wine,’ ‘Fine Wine,’ and ‘My Monet’ which has a variegated leaf.

This shrub is famous for its flaming red fall color, but there is nothing pretty about how it is spreading in our native woodlands. Other downsides of this shrub include that it really has only one short season of interest and often gets way too big for where most homeowners plant it.

Native Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Alice’ has amazing fall color. It also has large showy flowers that persist throughout the summer season into the fall and attractive exfoliating bark. While the variety Alice can get rather large (up to 8' tall), smaller varieties such as ‘Ruby Slippers’ or ‘Munchkin’ allow for use in smaller scale gardens.

Another native shrub, Physocarpus ‘Coppertina’ may not have significant fall color, but it does have beautiful burgundy-colored foliage the rest of the time, plus large white flowers in the late spring. ‘Coppertina’ is also a large-scaled shrub (up to 8' tall) but other varieties to try include ‘Ginger Wine’ and ‘Summer Wine’ which have a slightly more compact growth habit (5–6' tall).

Clethra is a native shrub that has fragrant blooms in late summer. It flowers even in shade conditions and can take average to wet soils. Hummingbird is a compact-sized version (2–4' high × 3–4' wide) with showy white flowers that attract butterflies. Variety ‘Ruby Spice’ is a larger shrub with pinkish-red, fragrant flowers.

SPRING IS AN EXCELLENT TIME TO PLANT A TREE

Flowering Trees Cornus florida is the scientific name for the dogwood tree

standout amongst spring flowering trees is our native flowering dogwood, Cornus florida. Cornus florida is one of those multi-season performers with beautiful large white or pink flowers in the spring and a strong red-reddish purple fall color. Our native dogwood also supports wildlife with autumn red fruit that many bird species adore, plus it has an interesting alligator skin textured bark. In the wild, it grew as a small understory tree in our eastern forests, and so it prefers to be planted in part sun or dappled sun conditions. Unfortunately, this understory tree has been attacked by several blights and diseases that have almost decimated the populations of the straight species of Cornus florida in the northeast. Luckily for us, horticulturalists have bred many cultivars of Cornus florida that we carry in the nursery that has proven to be more disease resistant. Varieties in the Cherokee series, such as ‘Cherokee Princess,’ have all the advantages of the parent tree but fewer issues. Cornus kousa, or the Kousa dogwood, is another popular flowering dogwood available in our area, although not a 48

native species. Cornus kousa flowers a bit later than the native C. florida, and so it is distinguishable because it flowers with its leaves on. Kousa dogwood flowers are a bit pointier, like a four-pointed star. Its bark is also very different, with the Kousa dogwood having a multi-colored exfoliating bark. Kousa dogwoods produce large red bumpy fruit in the fall, but the birds do not care for them. Kousa dogwoods also are more tolerant of being planted in full sun and drought. Maybe the best of both worlds is the Stellar Series of hybrid dogwoods, like Cornus ‘Stellar Pink’. These varieties are hybrids of Cornus florida and Cornus kousa and have the best characteristics of each parent, including better disease resistance and vigorous growth. DID YOU KNOW that the large white petals of the dogwood flowers are not petals at all? The actual flowers are the small, yellowish-green heads at the larger ‘flower’ center. The white petals are bracts — modified leaves surrounding the true flower. Poinsettias are another example of a plant with colorful bracts.

The pots obtain these unique finishes after they are fired for eight days at temperatures reaching up to 2300 degrees. The temperatures inside the kilns will vary from spot to spot, and this variation in the temperature is what gives each piece its own unique color and finish. The firing process makes our pieces some of the most weather-resistant planters in the world, and this uniqueness is what makes the demand for each piece so great. Each piece is a unique work of art, no two can possibly be the same.

A Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) in flight carrys insects on its way to its nest. Barn Swallows love the insects that we humans consider pesky, especially mosquitoes, gnats, and flying termites. Bird Houses Most birds breed in the spring and early summer and require a sheltered space to safely raise their young. Other birds do not nest until later in the season, but they will still use available houses as a refuge from predators, cold temperatures, and poor weather both prior to and after breeding.

Despite this, the benefits of poly sanding — holding the sand in place, cutting down on weeds, stopping ants from nesting and aesthetically getting to choose the color of your joints to match your patio — made poly sanding a must have with every patio. A Backyard Love Story We fell in love with this house for its backyard. It was the outdoor space we envisioned for our kids,” remembers homeowner Amanda M., “but the deck that surrounded the house was a complete mess, with rotted out wood that made it dangerous.” When we first met our homeowners, Adam and Amanda M., it was immediately apparent how important it was that their two young kids, now three-and-a-half and oneyears-old, had a great outdoor space to grow up in. It was also apparent that the couple loves to entertain, so it made perfect sense that one of the first things they wanted to tackle after they moved into their new house was to create an amazing outdoor living space. 106

After calling Gasper, they met at their home with sales designer Erik Freeman and spent a lot of time discussing their vision for their backyard. Amanda and Adam found Erik very receptive to their questions and feedback and soon were very comfortable letting his creative expertise take over. “The process was fluid. Erik got our vision and came back with a 3-D model which enabled us to see the design,” Adam explained. Amanda noted,

HREE DIFFERENT outdoor rooms combine to create Adam and Amanda’s outdoor living space: a covered lounge space under the new roof, a dining and cooking area on the uncovered portion of the deck and a comfortable seating area around the fire pit at the patio level.

OW CUTE IS SHE? The benefit of using a composite wood decking is that we did not have to think twice about letting her crawl around on the new deck (TimberTech® PRO® Legacy Collection in Tigerwood). These boards feature a complex blend of hues, natural board-to-board color variation, and a hand-scraped texture that offers old world charm.

“We added on a lot of things throughout the process. I changed my mind a lot, and Erik was very patient and easy to work with.” The design for the new deck included a large attached roof structure, cook station,

It is always very comfortable, especially with the ceiling fan,” Adam relates. “I had always wanted a pizza oven,” shares Amanda. So she was super excited when Erik came back with a cook station design that included a spot for a coordinating pizza oven. It has become a fun amenity, especially when they entertain. The most surprising amenities that the couple has come to appreciate truly are the access storage drawers and the built-in trash and recycling center. “We initially pushed back that we did not need drawers or the trash center, but we’re glad we followed Erik’s suggestion on this. I never thought about it, but it is something we use all the time,” shares Amanda. Timing on the project was perfect as the job finished up right before the pandemic started, giving the family the ideal space to get the kids outside as well as a good place

for Amanda to work from home, which she frequently does. The new composite decking material is also great for their small kids as their son can play with his toy trucks on the deck, and the baby can crawl around without safety fears such as splinters. “I would highly recommend Gasper. I thought it would be fairly simple just to build the roof and deck, and it turned out to be much more involved than I realized. So having someone like Erik who was able to walk us through the process and the timeline made a difference to us,” confesses Amanda. “When we first started, we had an idea of what we wanted but did not know how we were going to get there. So hiring a company like Gasper was the absolute best decision we made because they were able to support us through every decision and bring their skilled and extremely helpful employees to the table,” adds Adam.
