CELEBRATING FAMILY When Kelly and I met in High School, we had no idea what direction life would take us. We were close friends even through college. After college, Kelly and I started dating, and now are approaching our 3rd wedding anniversary this December. We always talked and hoped for starting a family our own. We are so excited to now be celebrating the recent birth of our beautiful baby girl, Lucy Della Gasper on April 8th. Since I was young, I always knew that I wanted to be a father. I always envisioned having a big family of my own, and it helps that my own family was tight-knit growing up and that I have entered the family business. Kelly and I were thrilled when we found out we’d be starting our own family, even if I knew her birth was going to be in the height of Gasper’s busy season! We planned absolutely everything possible leading up to Lucy’s birth. The nesting period seemed to last forever and seeing as Lucy was 11 days late, it was rough. We were anxious with anticipation of her arrival, and Kelly was getting extremely restless because we had nothing left to do at home…except wait for our bundle of joy. People tell you everything you need to know and do leading up to the birth, but nobody can tell you how you’ll feel during the actual delivery. With all the planning that we did before her birth, I had no idea what to expect once the doctor said Lucy was ready to make her debut. Once she did arrive, it was like the world stood still. The most memorable moment for me was watching Kelly cradle our perfect little girl in her arms singing her lullabies. I still get emotional thinking about that moment to this day. Being in a family business, people naturally expect us to plan our child’s future and dream of having them in the business as well. Lucy is a part of the next Gasper generation, but I’ll be happy with whatever she chooses to do in life. With my family and I being so close, I can’t wait to teach Lucy how valuable family is. We are so lucky that Lucy was born into incredible families like Kelly and my own. It’s reassuring to know that since her birth, she has been so deeply loved and she will have great people to depend on, her entire life. Kelly and I couldn’t be more grateful for all the kind messages, words of wisdom and support over the past month. Kelly and I are both truly elated about starting this brand new chapter in our lives, and that Gaspers is growing in the most meaningful way possible.

When our homeowner, Kelly C., who had grown up in Southern California purchased a modest property in Pennsylvania to be close to extended family, she knew that having an outdoor living space that recreated a California/Nantucket style was really critical to her. As she turned her attention to renovating the existing yard, she knew that she wanted a comprehensive design that made sense—where she could eat out and grill during the summer, and she wanted a pool. Being from California, she realized that she never had been without a pool and she missed it. Unfortunately, she was in a similar situation that many homeowners find themselves in. Her property had a small allowable building envelope, limited impervious coverage (impervious refers to paved surfaces that do not let water pass through), and various other site restrictions such as existing utility lines and a large seepage pit that were making it a real challenge to design the new pool and pool house that she was hoping to build. Kelly and her husband, Jim, had spent almost a year working with builders and architects trying to figure out how to make it all fit to no avail. Jim started to feel that they should move to a bigger property. However, Kelly was adamant that she did not want to move. Luckily, one day when she was feeling particularly frustrated, Kelly received a Gasper catalog in the mail and decided to call us. Gasper Sales Designer Erik Freeman met with Kelly and Jim on site to discuss their vision for their property. Erik was up to the design challenge, but knew it wasn’t going to be easy. The steeply sloping backyard was going to require substantial retaining walls and

A series of three windows were designed to allow food and drinks to be passed from the interior kitchenette to the pool area quickly. It also helps to keep wet floors (from swimmers) to a minimum.

The wet-laid bluestone pool decking is modest in size due to the site limitations but still provides plenty of room for teak chaise lounges.

The ambient glow from the pool house lighting makes for a very attractive focal point to the yard. Large lanterns placed on the pool coping and on the pool retaining wall add to the ambiance. The high vaulted whitewashed ceiling and the crisp white and blue color scheme that was selected for the pool house interior by Liz Walton, (www.lizwaltonhome.com) scream coastal living. The painted white brick fireplace is very elegant and because it is gas, also simple to use.

careful attention to grading. In addition, the buildable space where the design elements could be placed was extremely tight. Working with landscape architect, Christina Reeves, Erik was able to present a concept drawing within a few weeks. In addition, a 3D model was created to help Kelly and Jim envision exactly what the backyard would look like. “I was blown away by Gasper’s presentation,” remembers Kelly and they decided to move forward with the project. In the design, the large retaining walls were not a detriment; instead they became a major focal point of the pool. Three weirs fall from the walls directly into the pool. The pool house is the ultimate back yard retreat. There are areas for comfortable seating in front of the stone fireplace with space for a large screen TV above the mantle. The bar seating and kitchenette make entertaining simple and convenient. Air conditioning makes the pool house comfortable on the hottest of days and radiant flooring makes it cozy on chillier nights. Large glass, multi-slide doors allows the pool house to be completely open on the poolside. Now her daughter and husband negotiate over who gets to use the pool house. Since Jim does a lot of remote business in the evening, he often goes out to the pool house, fires up the fireplace, puts on the coffee maker and enjoys the peaceful space while working. Kelly’s daughter uses the poolhouse to chill after school. During construction, Erik acted as the project manager and guided the project through the arduous permit process. He also coordinated with other design and construction professionals on site, such as the pool contractor and interior designer Liz Walton. “Erik was so professional and conscientious. He did a great job of managing our expectations as well as just getting everything done.” recalls Kelly. “I have worked with a lot of architects and designers, and I am very discerning. Gasper was very professional, they always followed through, and I am so happy with the end results. People can’t believe how much space is in the yard now,” she continued. Closer to the main house, the old concrete patio was updated with wet laid random rectangular bluestone and edged with a new cook station, featuring a Lynx appliances such as a grill, outdoor oven and exterior rated refrigerator and ice maker. Bar top seating supplements the large teak dining table.

Kelly’s daughter and uncle converse over drinks in the pool house. Having a stocked kitchen inside the pool house is convenient and allows pool guests a sanctuary without the need to enter the main house.

The wall facing the pool opens completely with multi-slide glass doors when the weather is agreeable. When closed, the large open expanse of glass still provides that important view of the pool. Air conditioned for the hottest summer humidity the pool house is always a pleasant temperature.

The fire pit is located in the upper yard area and overlooks the pool and pool house. The view is particularly stunning after dark when the pool house and subtle landscape lighting emit a warm glow. Fire and landscape lighting are great ways to extend your time in your landscape into the evening hours.

Jim and Kelly relax around the fire with family and good conversation. This wood burning fire pit is simply comprised of a ring of boulders. An informal patio of irregular flagstone steppers in lawn give a steady base for the Adirondack chairs, but contrast with the formality of the lower pool and patio areas.

WEDDINGS

More and more couples are deciding to host their wedding in a backyard for a more unique and intimate feeling. But just because it is in the backyard, does not mean it can’t be as fabulous as an indoor wedding venue! Take Peter and Angela Y. for example. When their son Jonathan and fiancé, Emily announced their engagement, they decided to build a space in their backyard to host the wedding. Peter often hosts company picnics at his home and he and Angela have two younger children who could also potentially use the space, so it felt like a great investment.

The happiness and emotions of this day, shined through regardless of the forecast. Here Peter embraces his son, Jon, with wife Angela looking on.

It was very important that the space be dual functional; able to be used for events yet still appropriate for everyday use. Gasper’s design included a custom outdoor pavilion which most days it is used to shade a dining table. The day of the wedding, the pavilion was used by the bride and groom to take their vows, then by the string trio to provide music during the reception, and lastly as a dramatic setting for the couple’s first dance. The lower bluestone patio became the dance floor and the upper patio, which featured a linear gas fire pit, became the cocktail tent. The space was also designed to house two large tents.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES Whether you’re hosting your child’s birthday party or a special “decades” party, the event will be much more exciting in a backyard space specially designed for entertainment. Mamma Cat Update Since our 2018 spring circular, many of our loyal customers have stopped by the store asking for an update on Momma Cat. Well, you ask, and we deliver! To those who aren’t familiar with her story, one of our team members discovered a beautiful black & white cat with kittens in our barn last spring. Her kittens were adopted by some loving Gasper employees, but “Momma Cat” decided to call the Gasper Garden Center her home. You’ll regularly find Momma Cat lounging in our furniture department. This is her way of showing customers how relaxed they can be laying in a new outdoor chaise or couch. She’s also got a knack for picking very comfortable pillows, that seems to be her expertise. Don’t ask her about the lanterns or pottery though. She was told those are off limits. During the warmer months, Momma Cat loves to explore the tropicals and lower annuals to see what kind of new arrivals she can get a sneak peek at. She tries to get a look before the nursery associates get out the watering hose, that’s her signal to leave. She takes her snoozes between her adventures right behind the registers, so you might get a glimpse of her there. If there is ever a time we need to call for Momma Cat, employees know to use her favorite song which is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. She thoroughly enjoys having people serenade her while giving her treats or cuddling with her. Since she’s joined the Gasper family, Momma Cat has been adored by all of our employees and shoppers visiting the garden center. Plants classified as annuals are those which complete their life cycle within one year, or are not winter hardy. Annuals are some of our most useful garden flowers. With a rainbow of available color choices, an almost endless supply of forms and sizes, and the ability to bloom the entire growing season, annuals have a place in any garden. The best time to plant an annual is in early morning, early evening, or on a cloudy day. Avoid planting during the hottest part of the day. This protects newly planted annuals from having sun stress as they’re settling into their new environment. The leaves of plants will yellow and brown as they age. When this happens, it is best to cut them off. This reduces debris buildup in the pond, provides more room for new growth, and improves the appearance of the pond.
