Meet Gasper’s New Mascot

BARN CAT & KITTEN RESCUE One busy day this past spring, our furniture delivery man Bob, who I like to call Billy-Bob as not to be confused with the many other “Bobs” here at Gasper (including my husband and son), went into the furniture storage portion of our barn. He heard rustling noises and quiet murmuring cries. Low and behold, he was approached by a small, thin, white and black cat purring loudly and obviously very hungry. As Billy-Bob began to explore further, he found, tucked tightly in between the coco-liners and cardboard, a litter of five adorable kittens. Of course, being the caring man that Billy-Bob is, he proceeded to pick up the whole kit-and-caboodle and place them safely in a big, tall cardboard box. Soon, word and cell phone pics of the little cat and her kittens circulated like wildfire throughout the company. The love spread quickly, too. The little cat was named “Momma Cat” and became a frequent visitor in and around the Gasper property. Within a few weeks, and when they were old enough to be on their own, each one of the five kittens was adopted by one of our wonderful employees. But this is not the end of the story for this friendly little barn cat and her family. The staff at Gasper’s started to feed Momma, which was the big “welcome sign” for her to hang around. One evening at closing time she was just outside the door of the store. I scooped Momma up and put her right inside the store, giving her some water. She seemed to love being there. She even was invited into the office and at one point, jumped right up on to Bob Gasper’s lap and fell asleep. I soon took Momma to the veterinarian, made sure she had a clean bill of health, got her up-to-date on all her shots and had her spade. She sleeps all day by the registers or by the office reception desk with one of her favorite people and spends each night in the store. We are thinking of putting her on the payroll here at Gasper’s since she has become such an asset and a cozy morale booster to the entire Gasper team! Please look for our super-friendly ‘Momma’ cat next time you stop in at Gaspers (if she is not hunting mice out in the barn.)

 Know Your Zone and Your Frost Date Gasper’s nursery is located in zone 7A. This means winter temperatures in our area can possibly fall to 0-5° F. If you live north or south of us, you can find your zone here: http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov It is also helpful to know when there is a possibility of frost in your area. At Gasper’s, we know that after October 15th, there is a high possibility of a killing frost. A killing frost occurs when temperatures dip below freezing long enough to damage tender annuals and plants.  Protect or Dig Tender Plants & Bulbs Before your frost date, it is a good idea to protect, move, or dig tender plants and bulbs that you are hoping to save. Protect tender plants that can remain outdoors such as figs, with burlap and shredded leaves. Non-hardy bulbs, such as cannas and dahlias, can be dug and stored in a cool dry space such as a cellar. Tropical houseplants that have been summering outside on a porch or patio should be given a good drenching shower from your garden hose to remove insect/pest tag-alongs and then moved back inside. Flowering annuals such as begonias and geraniums can be brought in and enjoyed through the winter months near a south facing window.  Remove Annuals and Trim Back Perennials Remove and discard tender annuals from the garden before frost to avoid the black mush that will happen if they freeze. Trim back perennials. Dispose of any diseased or pest-infested plant material. Other trimmings can be composted. Try to leave items that might provide visual interest or food for wildlife. Ornamental grasses or perennials with interesting seed heads such as black-eyed susans, add interest to the fall and winter garden.

 Remove Weeds and Other Invasive Species Do not let weeds or other invasives hang out in your garden. Physically removing visible weeds during your fall garden clean-up gives you a head start on reducing your garden’s exposure to weed seeds. Some weeds such as dandelions germinate in the summer, overwinter in your garden, and then flower the next spring, so removal in the late fall helps to disrupt its growing cycle. Dispose of all weed material off-site and not in your home compost pile because it will not get ‘hot’ enough to sterilize weed seeds.  Trim with Caution Pruning often stimulates new growth and if that new growth does not have time to ‘harden off ’ before colder temperatures, it can be harmed or damaged. Avoid pruning evergreens in the late fall/winter, except to remove damaged or diseased branches. If you prune flowering shrubs at this time, you may risk cutting off dormant buds and next year’s flowers. Pruning some woodier perennials such as sage and lavender late in the year may even hinder winter survival. Typically, early spring or just after flowering is the best time to prune most shrubs.

 Wilt-Pruf your Broad Leafed Evergreens Your plants need water even during their dormancy. Usually water is available during winter storms and thaws. Broad leaf evergreens such as laurels, hollies, boxwood and rhododendrons are particularly vulnerable to drying, harsh winter winds especially when grounds are frozen. Winter damage can result in dry, brown leaves the following spring. This is particularly important for new plantings since their root systems are not fully developed. Spraying these vulnerable plants with an anti-transpirant such as Wilt-Pruf, can provide some protection against this type of winter damage. Wilt-Pruf is a clear coating that is sprayed on leaves to help reduce moisture loss under times of water stress and we have found it effective on reducing winter burn. We recommend spraying your plants 2-3 times in late fall/early winter.  Heavily Mulch Newly Planted Material We recommend putting an extra few inches of mulch around the root balls of certain new plants. Crape Myrtles, laurels (Cherry and Schip) and Hollies all benefit from the extra mulch. Just remember to rake away the extra mulch in the spring.  Check for Good Drainage on Containers Most of the containers we sell at Gasper are frostRESISTANT, not frost-PROOF! The best way to help your pots make it through the winter is to make sure they have excellent drainage. It is a key essential to make sure that the drainage hole of pots that you are going to leave outdoors is clear of debris. Products such as pot feet or pot risers can help raise the pot off the ground, giving a few inches of clearance and therefore better drainage.  Shred and Stock Pile Fall Leaves Fallen leaves can create great natural compost, mulch and fertilizer for your lawn and planting beds. Thick piles of whole leaves can smother a lawn, and under some situations can both inhibit water and air to getting to your plant’s roots. It is important to shred your leaves before using them. There are many leaf shredding tools on the market, but the easiest method may be to run over them with your bagging lawn mower. Shredded leaf composts, which are also called leaf molds, are great natural mulches and are easy to make with a little bit of time and patience.

Instructions: Preheat your oven to 350º Lightly grease a small baking dish. Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until the grease has mostly rendered, but the bacon is still very soft, about 3 minutes. Remove and pat dry with paper towels; set aside. Stir together the cream cheese, green onions, bell pepper, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl until combined. Divide this mixture onto each chicken breast. Fold the breasts in half, and wrap with 2 slices of bacon. Secure with toothpicks as needed. Place into the prepared baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven until the chicken is no longer pink in the thickest part, 30 to 35 minutes. Remove the toothpicks before serving.

How to Store Your Outdoor Furniture Gone are the days when you had to place your outdoor furniture in a shed, garage, basement, or attic to store for the winter months. Today, quality aluminum, iron, wicker, and teak pieces may be stored outdoors simply by covering with outdoor protective furniture covers, eliminating space-storage issues. Outdoor protective covers are machine washable and offer several sizes for all shapes and configurations of furniture pieces. To store a complete dining set you may simply purchase one cover to act as a sombrero, covering the dining table and tucked in chairs rather than cover individually. However, there are some mosaic glass table tops that should be sealed with a protective paste wax before covering, or brought inside and stored flat in a dry area to avoid cracking due to extreme low temperatures. It is always best to ask your salesperson their recommendations.

FALL FERTILIZATION Have you thought about your fall lawn fertilization? Often this final, important step in the care of your lawn is forgotten. Fertilizing in the fall is a critical part of your lawn renovation and enables the lawn to survive through the winter. The best time to apply a fall fertilizer is October into early November. As the days get cooler, the grass will start storing the nutrients the fertilizer provides. The benefits of fertilizing your lawn in the fall include increased and deeper root growth, a richer, darker-green color into late fall, a pleasant tan - (instead of white grass leaves) - in the dead of winter, an earlier spring green-up in the spring and much less disease and drought issues next year. PREVENT THATCH BUILD UP Thatch is a layer of dead and living shoots, stems, and roots that develops between the grass and the soil surface. Thatch build-up begins when turf produces organic debris faster than it can be broken down. How To Prevent Thatch Build-up 1. Choose a turf grass type (family) that doesn’t produce as much thatch. Perennial Ryegrass and Tall Fescues are primarily bunch-type grasses that spread through tillering, not rhizomes and do not produce significant thatch build-up. Kentucky Bluegrasses tend to produce thatch, because it does spread through rhizomes, but this isn’t a problem when the soil that the lawn is grown in is well managed and healthy. 2. Balance your pH and increase microbial activity. Thatch accumulates when soil conditions don’t have enough thatch-decomposing organisms. Acidic soils inhibit these microorganisms, resulting in rapid thatch build-up. Soils that contain large amounts of clay or sand may contain low populations of soil microorganisms that decompose thatch. Compacted soils and soils with poor structure also contain low microbial activity and are subject to thatch build-up.
