Wow, what a year for exterior furnishings at Gasper in 2022! It is so exciting for me to finally have enough space to show all of our furniture products under one roof. Looking back to early 2022, the new Exterior Furnishings Studio was not something we were considering. At the time, we were simply looking for an additional warehouse facility to manage a large amount of stock we had purchased when we stumbled across a vacant store property in Furlong, PA. This property was truly a diamond in the rough. Not only did it come with
adequate warehouse space, but it was just a fifteen-minute drive to our Richboro Home & Garden Showplace, AND it had high visibility on the muchtraveled York Road (Rt 263).
While we were not looking to open another store, let us say it was an opportunity we could not refuse! As with all diamonds in the rough, it did need some polish. Luckily, we had the full strength and labor of Gasper’s entire design and construction team behind us. In a short eight weeks, we were able to transform the whole store (inside and out) into the new Gasper Exterior Furnishings Studio, which opened to great fanfare in April 2022.

We’ve been busy polishing a diamond in the rough
The response from the community has continued to be overwhelmingly positive. The new store allows us to have furniture on the floor yearround, enabling our customers to buy early and not experience delays with their product.
Speaking of delays, I believe that we will start experiencing what I hope is a return toward normality when it comes to ordering and delivery times of outdoor furniture in the 2023 season. Wait times will decrease, and availability will be on the increase. Pricing has already started to level out because freight charges and container costs have finally stopped
skyrocketing. These factors will create a more positive atmosphere for consumers looking to purchase outdoor furniture this season.
In addition, we are adding three more furniture manufacturers to our already extensive 2023 lineup: Tuuci, with unique umbrellas in styles you are going to absolutely love; Windward, a great furniture line that is handcrafted in the USA; and our new Gasper Elite collection which is an exclusive line of furniture that I have personally curated just for the Gasper clientele.
The Exterior Furnishings Studio has truly become a designers’ showcase,

On occasion I throw large dinner parties where I need to seat a lot of people, but usually it is just my immediate family. What do you recommend other than buying a huge table or multiple tables we can push together?

My go-to recommendation for clients that need flexibility is an extension table. Extension tables easily expand to accommodate additional diners. The one shown on the opposite page by Kingsley Bate has two self-storing butterfly leaves that increase the length of the table by almost 3 feet, and when fully extended can accommodate up to 12 guests. The QR code will take you to a short video where I show you just how easy it is to open and close the extension.
Another idea would be to incorporate other seating options into the furniture design of your space. For example, oversized coffee tables or fire tables can provide guests with room to set down a plate or glass. Poufs and/or ottomans are another piece that offers flexibility as they can either be used as extra seating or as extra serving surfaces depending on what your need is.

VERY VERSATILE
The Pavone cantilever is suited for large seating areas. With an easy-to-operate crank mechanism, the umbrella and the shade are held by a high-quality aluminum structure that is rotatable, reclining, and retractable.
Luckily for current outdoor furniture customers, pandemic-caused supply chain issues have finally started to resolve. We even predict that in 2023, custom furniture wait times might finally return to pre-pandemic lengths. Unfortunately, this was not the case for our featured project homeowners, Bruce and Jeanne M.

Their furniture story began back in the spring of 2021, soon after they contracted with Gasper Landscape Design & Construction to renovate their 23-year-old patio. They had friends who highly recommended Eli Hymer, Gasper’s Exterior Furnishings guru, so Jeanne scheduled a complimentary consult with him to plan how to furnish the new patio. Due to the overgrown boxwood hedge, the old patio configuration only had room for a dining set. Once the hedge and associated planting bed was removed and replaced with
The patio renovation by Gasper Landscape Design & Construction (below) included removing an old concrete paver patio that had begun settling and replacing it with a new wet-laid blue-stone patio. The new patio design replaced an old boxwood planter bed with a guard rail and doubled the usable space on the patio, providing room for both dining and seating.
a guardrail, the new patio had room for both a dining AND lounge area. As often happens with busy couples, Jeanne took the lead on meeting with Eli without Bruce, and together, she and Eli produced a furniture design.
They selected a teak extension table by Kingsley Bate for the new dining area. Extension tables are a great option for empty-nesters like Jeanne and Bruce because they only need the extra seating space when all the kids and their families are over. At all other times, the table can be more intimately sized.
Frances Swivel Rocker Lounge Chair from Kingley Bate (left) might just be one of the most perfect lounge chairs that we carry. The chic, sloped arm is relaxed yet sophisticated. It has deep and comfortable luxurious cushions and the frames are constructed from all-weather wicker and sturdy bases of solid teak hardwood. PLUS, it rocks and swivels! What more can you ask for?
The Bellino 60"×30" rectangular fire pit by Ebel (above) has the sleek, modern look of concrete but is rust-proof, powdercoated aluminum which is a lot lighter and gives you more flexibility in how you place it in your landscape. The convenience of gas makes this fire pit extremely easy to use; it takes a standard 20 pound propane tank which slides in and out via a hidden panel door.
One of the most important and significant improvements to the existing patio was to redo a set of stairs that had become unsafe to use due to settling. The new Gasper-built masonry steps (right) are wider, provide for a landing mid-flight, and are well-illuminated during the evening hours thanks to LED lighting that is incorporated just under each stair tread.

Eli suggested continuing with the Frances collection in the patio lounge area and proposed a deep-seated, cushioned sofa and two matching swivel rocker lounge chairs. He assured Jeanne that Bruce would find them to be the ‘perfect chair.’ Here’s the kicker: at the time, Eli did not even have a sample set on the showroom floor for them to sit in, and it would be a seven to eight-month wait until their actual set arrived. This insanity was the state of the furniture market up to even a few months ago, but Jeanne and Bruce knew they were in good hands and went for it. “We completely trusted Eli to the point that we didn’t even see the furniture before it arrived,” confides Jeanne. “We knew he had good taste, and he assured us that if we were unhappy with the set after it arrived, he would exchange it.”
Fast-forward eight months to early 2022, the patio renovations were complete, Eli had come out to tweak the arrangement after it had been delivered, and Jeanne and Bruce were finally able to sit on their new furniture. And, as Bruce tells it, he sat in the chair and proclaimed, “Eli, you were right. This IS the perfect chair!”
To top it all off, Jeanne and Bruce added two large, 14-foot cantilever umbrellas (by Treasure Garden in anthracite frame with cast silver sunbrella fabric) to the patio. The umbrellas shade the entire patio, which otherwise would be in full sun, and make it much more livable. Jeanne and Bruce could not be happier with their new Gasper patio. “We are out there more than ever,” Bruce shares. “We were very pleased from the very beginning. Natural teak will weather to a beautiful silver patina which complements the blues and grey colors found in the full-range wet laid Pennsylvania bluestone patio. The Kingsley Bate Hyannis rectangular extension table (above) expands from seating for six to seating for twelve. For more information on this table see our video on page 23. The styling of the cushioned Frances dining chairs matches the adjoining deep seating set, with their all-weather wicker backs and teak hardwood frames.

At Gasper, one of our favorite gardening musthaves is Bumper Crop, an organic soil builder that has a million and one beneficial uses for our gardens. We like to add a 2-3" top dressing of Bumper Crop to our vegetable gardens and work it in every spring before we plant.
Owner Bob Gasper uses it religiously in his own garden and planters every year. Even our professional landscape crews generously add Bumper Crop while preparing landscape beds or when planting anything from annuals and perennials to trees and shrubs.
We like Bumper Crop because it is a balanced blend of aged wood fiber, cured compost, aged bark, lobster meal, worm castings, kelp, and dehydrated poultry manure. It is also inoculated with mycorrhizae which are microscopic fungi that studies have found have a beneficial relationship with plant roots which makes it particularly important for new plantings.
Regular use of soil amendments can help build the organic content in your soil which helps to reduce compaction, improve the quality of clay and sandy soils, and allows water and nutrients to move throughout the soil structure more efficiently, better reaching plant roots. The compost and manure components of Bumper Crop also act as a gentle fertilizer, adding needed nutrients. We have Bumper Crop available in 1 sq. ft. and 2 sq. ft. bags. See page 15.

Sure you can watch a lot of birds just by looking out of your house windows, but hopefully these little feathered friends will lure you to go outside. While outside you will be moving around, breathing fresh air and this will lift your mood and help your body. If the sun is out you can soak up some vitamin D too! Set up a chair outside and watch the birds from there, invite a friend over to watch with you. Kids also love to watch the birds and getting them interested early helps them appreciate nature at a young age. Add different feeders with different food options for different bird species to visit your yard.

The bluebird went from being as common as the robin, to being so rare that birders were sure of its inevitable extinction. There were many reasons such as loss of habitat, pesticide use, and influx of the house cat. But the main reason was the arrival of the House Sparrow and the European Starling to America, who are extremely aggressive and compete for the same nest locations.
With the help of many programs, the bluebird is a story of successful conservation. These bright blue birds are a cheerful sight to see, and they eat those pesky bugs around your yard. It is a win-win; so set up a bluebird box to invite these birds into your yard. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get them nesting right away, it might take them a season or two to find your box. Offering up some mealworms may help attract them to your yard. Fresh water is always welcome when you feed birds.
