We are happy to report that Gasper is continuing to grow — and we don’t only mean as a business! This November, we were blessed with our fourth Grandchild, Robert Kolton Gasper III , born to our son Bob and his wife, Kelly. It is our sincerest hope that baby Bob will one day have the hope and freedom to join his two sisters and cousin in the Gasper family business. It is very gratifying to realize that the small landscaping business we started 35 years ago is still going strong, providing for our family, our grandkids, and our family of valued employees. As we plan for the future of the Gasper family of companies, we're happy to report we broke ground and started construction on our newest venture, the new home of our Landscape Division, operations department, and an expanded Bucks County Hardscape & Building Supply. The new 27,000 sq. ft. building is slated for completion later this summer. We can barely wait for the final walk-through as it has been a long time in planning. The property is located only 10 minutes away in the Mearns Road Business Campus near the Revolution Ice Gardens Ice Rink. Due to loss of habitat and natural predators, the deer population has reached problematic numbers in many of the communities that Gasper serves. Throw in damage from rabbits and groundhogs and many gardeners may feel like giving up entirely. There are some strategies to keep browse damage to a minimum. The first strategy is to select plants that are known to be deer- and rabbit-resistant Now unfortunately very few plants are 100% deer proof as sometimes animals in different areas eat different things. Generally, resistant plants have either rough, thorny stems, a bitter taste, or strong scent. Check out page 14 for our listing of some of the most deer-resistant annuals. Look for these symbols throughout this book for deer and rabbit resistant planting suggestions. For more comprehensive listings, try your local extension offices.
The next strategy is fencing. Unfortunately, this can often be expensive, unsightly and often impractical as deer can jump as high as eight feet and rabbits and groundhogs are famous for digging under fencing.
After fencing, the next means of protection would be to try deterrents and sprays. Repellents can be divided into two groupings: direct and indirect repellents. Direct repellents repel through bad taste and often contain a bittering agent. Indirect repellents repel through sight, smell, or sound. Used together, these repellents work by reducing the attractiveness and palatability of your plants, making them undesirable to deer and rabbits. FOR

An annual plant lives for only one growing season. Annuals typically flower and bloom throughout their entire growing season — usually late spring through late summer, then die when it gets cold. They will not regrow again.
Annuals are great in containers and in your garden! Add to your existing perennial garden for extra color and bloom time.
Gasper is perfect for all my gardening and outdoor needs. They have a wide variety of products and their staff is very knowledgeable. I look forward to returning again!
If at all possible, plant in early morning, early evening, or on a cloudy day. Avoid planting during the hottest part of the day. This protects newly planted annuals from having sun stress as they’re settling into their new environment. If you choose to tackle planting chores in the evening, you will give plants the overnight period to adjust to their new surroundings.
Mix a good compost like Bumper Crop Organic Soil Builder with soil you place in a bucket. Use a ratio of 1 part Bumper Crop Organic Soil Builder to 2 parts removed soil. Mix in 4 heaping tablespoons of fertilizer per 1 gallon of soil. Use an organic probiotic fertilizer like Dr. Earth Rose and Flower Food. Mix the soil thoroughly inside the bucket.
When all of your annuals are planted, water them with a gentle spray. This will water the plants without disturbing them. If you notice the next day that the soil has settled and exposed some of the roots, add more soil around the roots. Annuals tend to have shallow root systems so you may need to check them for dryness more frequently than other types of plants.
Your annuals will need daily water for about a week to be established, then water as necessary. Many annuals want water daily, where others can skip a day or two. The water needs of your annuals vary with the weather, the season, and sun exposure. You must make appropriate adjustments as the weather changes.

Sizing Up the Flats Most standard nursery flats measure about 21-inches long by 9½-inches wide by 2¼-inches deep. The number of flowers or other plants in a flat can vary according to the size of the plants or the pots in which they’re planted. There are 32 cells in a regular flat

A Super Flat is the same size as a standard nursery flat, but deeper and made up of 18 large cells. This allows each individual plant to grow larger. So your super flat plants are older and more established plants than then the plants in your standard flat. This will give you a head start in the growing season by approximately 3–4 weeks. PER FLAT

Partial sun or partial shade is probably the most confusing category. The two terms are fairly interchangeable. These plants prefer 4 to 6 hours of sun a day and would be happiest getting their sun mostly in the morning and/or late afternoon with shade through the middle of the day.
Dappled Shade
Dappled shade refers to areas where there is a mixture of sun and shade, generally because a large leafy tree is overhead.
We know how severe of a problem deer browsing is for many of you. Please note that no plant is 100% ‘deer-proof’. A starving deer with eat anything! Generally, these ‘resistant’ plants either have rough, thorny stems or a bitter taste or strong scent.

Light: Full Sun — most veggies like at least eight hours of direct sun per day.
Soil: Healthy, rich soil is the key to a successful and productive vegetable garden. A soil test will give you an idea of your soil fertility and pH. You can add soil amendments and fertilizers to your soil until it is up to par.
Plants: If it is your first garden, it is usually best to pick four or five types of vegetables and grow them well, rather than to try to cram everything into a small space. However, if you start with spring lettuce then you can sow another crop (such as summer beans) in its place following harvest.
Water, Weed, and Feed: Newly seeded beds will need frequent watering, but more established crops can get by on one to two inches of water per week. To conserve water and reduce the need to irrigate, mulch your soil with several inches of straw or shredded leaves. Side benefit: the mulch
will also suppress weeds. As for feeding, quick growing crops like radishes and lettuce won’t need supplemental fertilizers if grown in fertile soil. Long-term veggies like tomatoes, winter squash, and eggplants, however, will appreciate a boost several times over the growing season. Give them an occasional dose of a water-soluble organic food to support growth and encourage the biggest harvest.

Organic gardening is a gardening style that is much more in tune with the natural environment, working in conjunction with more natural ways to fertilize, reduce weeds, and to minimize insect damage to plants, without the use of chemical or synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. While gardening with organic techniques and products is a good practice for your entire yard, it is particularly important when growing food that you intend to eat. Organic gardening often has the reputation of being extremely labor intensive. Luckily now there are so many good organic products that we carry at Gasper Home & Garden Showplace that can make going organic much easier.

Weeds are the bane of every gardener but there are many organic weed control product options that can help you win the battle. It is important that any pest controls, whether organic or not, are used judicially and to address specific issues as to not harm the many beneficial insect species that are helpful to your plants and garden like bees, pollinators and other species that help naturally control pest species like ladybugs and parasitic wasps.
To control Japanese Beetles and their grubs try St. Gabriel’s Organic Milky Spore Powder or Safer Brand Japanese Beetle Traps.

If you love the tropical vibe, you must already be in love with palm trees. Wherever they grow they give tropical beauty to that place naturally. The lava glazed pottery we import from Vietnam continues to remain one of the hottest categories among the pottery we offer at Gasper. A unique Vietnamese glazing process produces the beautiful colors and textures that are also extremely durable. The Vietnamese glazes are 100% handmade and applied. The pots obtain these unique finishes after they are fired for eight days at temperatures reaching up to 2,300o Fahrenheit.

What does this mean?
When thinking about the best way to winterize planters, there’s one thing everyone should realize: freezing water expands and is capable of cracking steel. It is therefore impossible to produce pots that are 100% frost-proof. The amount of water contained in the pot determines its durability. Our planters are manufactured with the best quality materials and with the greatest of care. They are subject to strict quality controls, and with proper care, they will withstand the winter months.
The best way to make your planter frost resistant is to make sure the bottom hole is clear of debris. Fill the bottom of your planter with packing peanuts, clean drainage stone (20-30% high) or use an Ups-aDaisy planter insert. If you use the drainage material be sure to cover it with a quality landscape fabric. Then fill the rest of planter with quality potting soil. Place your planter on a hard surface or raise up on pot feet or riser. Replace all of your potting soil each spring, unless you are leaving shrubs in the planter year round. If you are leaving shrubs in your planter year round, try to replace some of your potting soil each early spring. This will help with drainage.
The best plan is to store both plant and the pot is in a dry, sheltered place. If the planted pot is to be left outside, then the pot must have excellent drainage. Raise the pot off the ground to allow the water to drain and prevent it from freezing. We recommend placing a planted pot under a covered location and you can determine the amount of water that your planted pot will need (don’t let your plant dry-out over winter). Take care to prevent water from gathering in empty containers by storing upside down or with a cover, or store in a shed or garage.

Gasper’s Bucks County Hardscape & Building Supply offers several different options when it comes to poly sand for new patios or for redoing your existing joints between your pavers. There are many different poly sands on the market but it is important to choose a high-quality poly sand to ensure you are getting the most time out of each application that you can.
Newer poly sands have come out on the market that have made poly sanding much easier and safer for the do-ityourselfer. Older poly sands had cement or non-translucent polymers that made it difficult for even a seasoned professional to apply without leaving a white residue behind known as poly haze. Despite this, the benefits of poly sanding — holding the sand in place, cutting down on weeds, stopping ants from nesting and aesthetically getting to choose the color of your joints to match your patio — made poly sanding a must have with every patio.
Now we have newly formulated poly sands that have clear polymers and special additives that help keep the sand in place while sweeping so there is less dust. These are Alliance Gator Maxx G2 and SRW Z3 poly sands, both are excellent and the two brands offer a better selection of colors to choose from. Both are approved for larger joints, rain safe in 15 minutes or less, and can be used in pavers laid over top of concrete slabs with the proper preparation.

Kevin and Lisa had a very simple patio and an existing pool, but they didn’t have any shade, which made being anywhere except in the pool or in the house pretty unbearable during the summer. They wanted to deal with a reputable company. So they took the recommendation of their neighbor, who was very happy with the recent work Gasper had completed for them, and made an appointment to meet with Gasper Sales Designer Bob Gasper. They reviewed the Gasper proposal and did not even bother interviewing other companies. “Bob was great to work with. He was very hands-on at a very busy time in his life (he was a new father). He was very attentive and open to changes,” remembers Lisa. “It was nice to deal with a company we had confidence in. I didn’t feel stressed at all when construction started.”
The number one priority to Kevin and Lisa was a roof to provide the shade they needed, and the new Gasper-built pavilion, with its beautiful vaulted ceiling, has proven to be so much more. “It feels like a room — just without walls. I say it is one of the coziest rooms in the house!” shares Lisa. She likes to sit in the pavilion to enjoy the yard, hear the birds, and feel the breeze. On the other hand, Kevin likes to come outside and watch the Phillies during the summer months or
the Eagles in the fall on the large outdoor TV that was mounted over the new masonry gas fireplace. One unique feature of the design, by Gasper Landscape designer Nick Lupinacci, is that the fireplace is placed at one of the pavilion corners on an angle. This allows the view from the pavilion to the pool to be unimpeded and gives the space two amazing focal points. Plus, it helps everyone keep an eye on the kids while they are in the pool.
Everyone wants to be where the food is, and the location of the new masonry cook station with its bar counter means plenty of seating for guests to gather around the cook or to sit around the large dining table in the outdoor dining room area of the patio. Lisa feels the new paver patio ties together beautifully, and the pavilion makes the whole yard function better. “We have more use of the area during the summer and year-round because of the roof.”
Lisa tells us that sometimes she comes out by herself in the morning and sits and looks around because it is so peaceful. As she describes it, “Coming out back is like a little vacation during the week. It is our own little retreat. It is so private back here; you feel like you are in your own little world.” Or as we like to describe it, “Outdoor Living Perfected”. Either way, mission accomplished. What can we create for you?

The grill, exterior refrigerator, and trash and recycling center are all professional grade Lynx appliances.
The Gasper-built fireplace (right) is placed at one of the pavilion corners on an angle and features a large screen outdoor TV to watch your favorite team. The deep seating set is both beautiful and comfortable, and because it is part of Gasper’s Value collection, it is also easy on the wallet.

I am considering adding Adirondack chairs to one of my outdoor areas. I see they are available in both wood and in polymers which material would you recommend?

First of all, excellent choice, I love using Adirondack chairs when designing outdoor seating for my clients. Its simple iconic design, with its reclined back and seat, makes the Adirondack chair one of the quintessential outdoor chairs for relaxing and comfort. Not only are they super comfortable even without cushions or pillows but their heavy construction makes them very stable and not susceptible to blow away in windy conditions (like down at the shore).
And you are right about the availability of the chair in different materials. At the Exterior Furnishings Studio in Furlong, we have Adirondack Chairs available in hardwoods such as teak and Ipe, but our bestselling material is marine-grade polymer and let me tell you why. With the marine grade polymer furniture, you are getting a chair with almost no maintenance; it is not going to fade or degrade over time. Plus, I really like some of the newer neutral colors available in the polymer lines that really do a great job of mimicking wood.
