Colorful chrysanthemums (or Mums as they are affectionately called) are one of our favorite harbingers of fall. C ome in an array of colors: reds, golds, pinks, purple, burgundy, & whites M ums love the cooler weather of the fall. L ong lasting: mums typically will last for 3–6 weeks. M ums can tolerate light frosts. M ums look best with other fall displays such as hay bales, pumpkins, and ornamental grasses. I always know it's fall when the goldenrod starts to bloom — it's the kickoff to the season. I hike frequently and there’s tons of goldenrod along the trails. It’s a beautiful sight walking through fields of gold!

Tricyrtis hirta (Toad Lily) A late blooming, orchid-like flower with purple spots, it grows in the shade with long arching branches covered with flowers. The common name of this plant is Toad Lily — they don’t attract toads, but I sure wish they did because I love having cute toads in the garden to eat bugs.

hen plants are transplanted in their dormant phase, they are less likely to experience transplant shock. The cooler fall temperatures and increased rainfall means that newly transplanted plants are less stressed and easier to care for. In addition, just because the

6 Essential Tips for Fall Lawn Care E

Make sure your grass stays healthy through the winter months

stablishing a lawn properly at the start is the best way to have future success. Even lawns that have started as a sod installation require annual care and fall rejuvenation. This is a relationship, not a one-and-done process. The best time of year to newly seed or over-seed a lawn is fall. The temperatures are typically moderate, nights are cooler and rainfall more consistent. All these conditions are what turf grass prefers. Typically, in our area the best time of year to work on fall lawn care is between the end of August to the middle of October. 1. Control Weeds Broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions, chickweed, and henbit germinate in the cool, moist weather that occurs between September and October. The germinated weed seeds overwinter as small plants, then rapidly grow and flower with the arrival of warm, spring weather. Use weed killer, such as Lawn Weed Control, to control actively growing weeds in your lawn. If you apply Lawn Weed Control and plan on seeding in the fall, you must wait 30 days to seed post-application. 2. Remove Excess Thatch Remove excess thatch by using a metal rake or a de-thatcher machine. Thatch is a layer of organic matter consisting of stems, dead grass, and leaves, that builds up above the soil and below the crown of the grass blades. Excess thatch can block access to air, water, and nutrients on your lawn can also harbor disease-causing fungi and insects that weaken and ultimately kill your grass. 3. Aerate Compacted Soil Core aeration removes soil plugs from your yard, therefore creating space in the soil for air, water, and necessary nutrients to travel to your lawn’s root system. A core aerator can be rented from most garden centers or hardware stores. If you’re looking for an alternative to heavy and unwieldy aerators, Jonathan Green Love Your Soil® naturally loosens compacted soil and increases necessary airflow to your lawn’s root system. 4. Over-seed a Thinning Lawn Take advantage of the fall season’s warm soil temperatures, ample moisture, and cool nights to thicken-up a thinning lawn with Jonathan Green Black Beauty® Grass Seed mixtures. A black beauty lawn can grow roots up to four feet deep, are naturally dark green in color, and have a waxy coating on the blade to help prevent damage from disease and insects.

Feed Your Lawn Cool season grasses like to be fertilized twice in the fall — one application in early fall (late August to September) and another in late fall (late October to November). The first application helps strengthen weak or brown spots from summer and the second helps to protect your lawn against winter disease. Make sure your second application occurs before the ground freezes. Try a fertilizer rich in both potassium and nitrogen such as Winter Survival Fall Lawn Fertilizer. 6. Remove Leaves Leaving piled-up leaves on your lawn blocks necessary sunlight for new grass seedlings. Remove leaves from your lawn by using a leaf blower or a rake. For newly seeded lawns it is best to use a leaf blower, as a rake may damage or hinder new seedlings from growing. A great option for handling fall leaves is to add them to your compost pile. Will the contractor do most of their own work? Is the contractor a single individual who sub-contracts a majority of the work out to others or does the contractor do most of the work inhouse? Do they have the man-power necessary to get your project completed in a timely manner? At Gasper, we employ various experienced landscapers, carpenters, masons and horticulturists as part of our Gasper team to ensure the work is completed to the quality and consistency we demand. For the work that we cannot do

he driveway is something our homeowners use and see every day so adding the Belgian block edging and aprons was a very practical design decision. It tidies up the edges of the red stone driveway but still maintains that old farmhouse feeling. Plus, it provided a clean base material for Ken to wash the cars.

ur homeowners wanted a more finished but not less rustic look for their classic Pennsylvania farmhouse in this issue’s Gasper-built featured project. Our Homeowners Ken S. and Sarah B.

The Project This project was completed in 2 phases. Phase 1 involved adding granite Belgian block aprons and borders at the old stone driveway entrance, as well as at the house, barn and garage. Phase 2 involved redesigning their outdoor entertainment space to include a new irregular bluestone patio, cedar pergola, a natural stone cooking station and fire pit patio.

estled into the woodland edge, the main seating area of the patio overlooks a wooden foot bridge. The bridge traverses a fairly significant drainage swale that was transformed into a dry riverbed with large boulders, river jack stone and water tolerant plantings, making something that was strictly utilitarian into something beautiful.

Elegance CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 MAKING HISTORY The shed and chimney were original to the property. The previous owners had turned the chimney into a small grill. Gasper’s design enlarged the cooking area but incorporated the existing chimney into the new counter space, creating a beautiful (and historic) feature for the new patio.

The new project enhanced our property and not just in increasing the value of the house, but it made me feel that it is almost out of a fairy tale … it is just what we had envisioned. — SARAH B.

THE BURDEN OF POUF Outdoor pouf stools are so fun and versatile on the patio. They can be used as extra seating around the fire table, ottomans for the casual seating, or even as extra end tables. Plus, they add a bit of flare, with their colorful fabric.

LASTING IMPRESSION Cedar is a naturally rotresistant wood which is why it is used so frequently to build outdoor structures such as this pergola. This pergola is already starting to patina into a beautiful silvery-grey color.

DESIGN PATTERNS It’s okay to use different paving patterns to designate different areas. Here the more formal random rectangular pattern of the PA bluestone paving is used to define the dining area, and the more informal irregular pattern is used to connote a more natural feel on the rest of the patio. The clay brick border ties the two paving areas together.

MAKE YOUR BED A planting bed was left at the base of one of the posts because the homeowner would like the pergola to eventually be covered with living vines, creating additional shade as well as adding to the natural feel of this patio.

A QUICK EXIT Figuring out how to drain stormwater off your patio is important. Here we designed a scupper into these beautiful natural stacked stone walls. A scupper is a small opening at the base of the wall that allows stormwater to exit through the wall. It is a utilitarian necessity, but it also creates an attractive feature on the outside of the wall.
