Denton Public Library was Awarded the Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet Exhibit!

The Explore Earth exhibit will focus on local earth science topics as well as a global view of our changing planet. The exhibit is part of the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) led by the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute. Exhibit partners include the American Library Association, the Lunar and Planetary Institute, and Afterschool Alliance. Explore Earth is supported through a grant from the National Science Foundation. Classes listed with a globe support the Explore Earth exhibit. South Branch Library will host the exhibit from April 6 to June 2 this year!

Recycling with SCRAP

Perot Museum’s TECH Truck

Engage in hands-on, makerbased science, engineering, technology, art, and math (STEAM) experiences that foster creativity and confidence. The TECH truck will bring interactive discovery directly to the library free to the public. Best for ages 8-12. Minecraft: Extreme Weather!

Plate Tectonics

Proof that science can be exciting! Learn how the earth moves under your feet with this interactive event made possible by a partnership with Explorium Denton. For ages 5-8. Protecting Water Quality in Denton

Learn about the many aspects of monitoring/maintaining water quality in Denton’s streams. We will illuminate the connection between activities of individual landowners/ citizens and the effects those activities have on the quality of receiving waters that feed Lake Lewisville. Lake Lewisville is one of Denton’s sources of drinking water that needs to be protected. We will discuss the various forms of pollution and how Denton is working to minimize/ limit these pollutants. Preschool Music Class

Music is a great way to positively influence your child’s development and get them excited about learning. Wildlife Detectives

Want to learn how to be a wildlife detective? Join Park Ranger Danielle Bradley for this fun and informative program that teaches how to use observation skills to find traces of animal activity, followed by an optional short track-hunting hike. Ages 5 and older. Wed 3/16 Emily Fowler 3 p.m.

Raptors of North Texas

Day and night the raptors are on patrol. Their mission: to find a meal. How do they do it? Discover their unique adaptations to hunt in woodland areas, wetlands, and prairies. Raptors of different species and sizes will be used to demonstrate their capabilities. Best for ages 5 and up. Tickets will be available one hour before the show. Thurs 3/17 South Branch 3:30 p.m.

Denton Public Library Closings (all three locations) The Libraries be closed March 27 for the Easter holiday. Regular hours will resume on Mon, March 28. Emily Fowler Central Library will be closed Fri, April 29 - Sun, May 1 for Jazz Fest. Regular hours will resume on Mon, May 2. North Branch Library and South Branch Library will remain open during Jazz Fest. The Libraries will be closed on Mon, May 30 for Memorial Day. Regular hours will resume on Tues, May 31.

Robots Everywhere!

STAAR Wars: Reading Comprehension Activities

May the reading force be with you! This program series is designed to strengthen reading skills covered on the STAAR assessment for grades 3-5. Children are invited to participate in a variety of fun learning activities conducted by a certified teacher. Pajama StoryTime and Stuffed Animal Sleepover

You’re invited! Join us for an evening of StoryTime fun dressed in your favorite pajamas! Stuffed animal friends can stay for a sleepover at the library. Get pictures of the fun times your stuffed animal had the next day! Ages 1-5. Tues 3/29 North Branch 7 p.m.

Homeschool Science Club

Explore chemical reactions using simple household ingredients in this hands-on science class for children ages 6-11. Registration required. Thurs 3/10 Emily Fowler 2:30 p.m.

“What’s for Lunch?” Predators and Prey

Join Park Ranger Danielle Bradley to learn all about predators and prey and how they work together to keep the ecosystem in balance. For Ages 5-10. This program supports the Explore Earth exhibit on display at South Branch Library April 6-June 2. 4/14 Emily Fowler 4:30 p.m.

Montessori Preschool STEM

Come try your hand at these preschool science experiments from certified Montessori instructor Cassidy Fuess. Children will experiment with a variety of projects and materials that will help them explore science and the world around them in a child-directed manner. For ages 3-6. Animal Hunts at the Library: Giant Anteater Teddy Bear Parade

It’s time for the Teddy Bear Parade! Bring your teddy bear for a bear-y fun StoryTime. Then, join the parade around the library and the park (weather permitting). Ages 1-6. Wed 3/23 Emily Fowler 11 a.m.

Family Yoga

Join yoga instructor Kristina Prokopchak and learn standing poses, sun salutations, breathing, relaxation techniques, and interactive yoga games. Homeschool Science Club: Flappy Bird

In some cases, free tickets are distributed one hour prior to a program at the hosting library. This is common when attendance historically has filled a venue to capacity. We also ask that individuals with special needs and groups of six or more call before an event so that we can provide the best possible library experience.

For Adults Book Bites: Book Lovers Club

Love manga? How about sci-fi? Maybe mysteries are more your thing. Come to the library after class to hang out with other book lovers and talk about what you’re reading now. Chopped: Teen Edition

Calling all chefs! Come compete in the library’s own version of the TV cooking show Chopped. Techie Teens Homeschool Teen Gaming Club

Homeschool Coding Club

Robotics (2-part class)

Get some hands-on robotics experience! This class will help you get started in the fascinating field of robotics by showing you how to configure and program a robot. Intro to Makey Makey

3D Printing for Teens

Explore electronics and invention by building and creating with LEGOs and littleBits, electronic modules that magnetically snap together. For ages 8-17. Registration required. Tues 4/19 North Branch 6:30-8 p.m.

ESL & GED Classes

Chess Class

Breastfeeding Support Group

Catharine DeMore, a Certified Lactation Educator Counselor, and Susan MacKenzie, IBCLC, RN, CPN, RLC, will introduce different topics related to breastfeeding, followed by discussion. Mothers are encouraged to breastfeed during the meeting. Older siblings are welcomed. There is no cost to attend. First Wednesday of the month. North Branch 10-11 a.m.

Exploring Western Philosophy

Explore the foundations of Western thought from its earliest beginnings in an interactive class with Dr. Eva H. Cadwallader, professor of philosophy, Emerita. No charge to attend. Thursdays North Branch 4-5:30 p.m.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

VITA is a United Way of Denton County program that provides free tax preparation and e-filing services for low-to moderate income families and individuals with an annual income of $50,000 or less. VITA is made possible by partnership with the Internal Revenue Service and North Branch Library. A variety of adult and youth magazines from various years will be available for free. If you have any old magazines to get rid of, leave them for others to take! Magazines left at the end of the day will be recycled in an effort to help keep Denton green! Sat 3/26 Emily Fowler 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Advocating for Children Workshop

Attend this workshop, featuring Victoria Calvin with CASA of Denton County, to learn how to make a difference in a child’s life. Learn how to recognize the signs of abuse and neglect, communicate and build relationships with youth, and become an advocate for children who need help. Wed 3/30 North Branch 2 p.m.

Register to learn about volunteering at the library! All volunteers 16 and older must pass a background check.
