Summer Reading Club, a national literacy initiative for all ages, begins in June! Join us for a series of events and read throughout the summer to earn prizes. This year the theme is: “On Your Mark, Get Set… READ!” Register at any of the three branches to participate.

Karate Demonstration

Mid-Summer Outdoor Concert

Gregg the Balloon Guy

Gregg brings his amazing magic show and balloon twisting talents to the library. Gregg has worked in six different countries and was even the official balloon twister for Hello Kitty Land in Japan! DCT Roadshow “On Your Mark, Get Set… READ!”

It’s show time! Actors from the Denton Community Theatre offer this unique, interactive program that promotes reading during the summer. Experience Story Theatre where actors perform live stories and songs and invite audience participation. Made possible by the Texas Commission on the Arts. Ages 5 and older. Family Chess Challenge

This is your chance to challenge Alexey Root, a former U.S. women’s chess champion. Dr. Root will play 10 chess players simultaneously. For Children Read to Rover

Give your child an opportunity to practice reading one-on-one with a certified therapy dog. This program is made possible by a partnership with the Therapy Pals of Golden Triangle. Pipdilly’s: Escape from Couch Potato Land

Bursting with energy, this fantastical musical comedy with original songs, imagination games, magic, and circus skills shows kids it is “cool” to lead active, healthy lives. The Pipdillys get their audiences up singing and dancing! Grossology: Owl Edition

You can learn a lot about a species if you study their diet. Let’s learn what an owl pellet really is and together we’ll dissect owl pellets and discover what animals an owl eats. LEGO Builders Club

Spanish StoryTime: Maracas

Oh, For Goodness Snakes!

A Very Hairy StoryTime

Humane Heroes

Young Novelists

For Children Andy Mason’s Bilingual Music Concert

Award-winning children’s musician Andy Mason will perform his original music that has entertained families in the Southwest for over 10 years. Mother Goose Time

Bring your baby to these classes promoting infant and caregiver bonding through stories, songs, and activities. For infants as old as 18 months and their caregivers. Tuesdays South Branch 9:30 a.m. Fridays North Branch 9:30 a.m.

Baby and Toddler StoryTime

This program for children age 3 and younger is designed to promote literacy and caregiver bonding through books, songs, and finger plays. Wednesdays North Branch 7 p.m.

StoryTime

Join us for interactive preschool classes that use stories, songs, and puppets to build early literacy skills and prepare children to learn to read. For children ages 1-5 and their caregivers. Calling all Star Wars fans! Join us for the sixth annual Star Wars Celebration. Meet members of the 501st Legion in authentic costumes (bring your cameras). Splish Splash StoryTime

Join us for a special StoryTime with Water Works Park by the pool, then enjoy splash time. Admission is free, but guests must leave by 10:45 a.m. or pay park admission. Fridays Water Works Park 10 a.m.

Toddler Play Time

One small step for man… led to a world of possibilities. Adventure into space and learn about satellites from Kubos, a company that sends nano-satellites into space. Stay to create your own crater. Best for ages 5-8. Thurs 7/28 South Branch 3:30 p.m.

Music is a great way to positively influence your child’s development and get them excited about learning. In these classes you can boost your child’s independence, social-emotional skills, early language, literacy, and self-control through their love for music. Ages 1-5. Registration is required. In some cases, free tickets are distributed one hour prior to a program at the hosting library. This is common when attendance historically has filled a venue to capacity. We also ask that individuals with special needs and groups of six or more call before an event so that we can provide the best possible library experience.

Learn the basics of coding with Rey, Finn, BB-8, and all your favorite Star Wars characters. This is a self-paced lesson in coding, but staff will be present for one-on-one assistance. Ages 7-10. Registration required. Tues 8/2 The Forge at North Branch 2 p.m.

Critterman: Extra Furry

James Wand’s Secret Agent Magic Show

Nerdy Nom-noms: Cupcakes

Calling all Whovians, Gryffindors, Star Wars fans, and more! Unleash your nerdy sweet tooth and come to the library for a cupcake decorating contest. Pokémon Club

Escape from the Library

The evil librarians have trapped you and your friends in an endless cycle of Dewey Decimal lessons and shushings. Do you have what it takes to escape their clutches? Random Fandom: Star Trek Comic Book Arts and Crafts

Comic Book Heroes vs. Villains

Are you a hero or a villain? Which is the best superhero and supervillain match up? Celebrate the light and dark side of comic books with superhero and supervillain-themed crafts and activities. Ages 11-16. Tues 6/21 Emily Fowler 3 p.m.

After Hours Retro Comic Night

Cowabunga, dude! The library will be closed and the teens will take over. We will take a trip back to the 80s with the Ninja Turtles, X-Men, The New Teen Titans, and more. Pizza will be served to keep up our energy as we rotate between a S.H.I.E.L.D. laser tag training academy, making candy sushi, games, and an art station. Registration required. Come celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek! Explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, vote for your favorite Captain, and other Star Trek-themed activities. Go where no one has gone before. Costumes welcome! Ages 11 and up. Wed 8/10 Emily Fowler 3 p.m.

Back to School Water Balloon Wars

Back-to-School Crafternoon

Techie Teens Coding Club

Learn how to code, collaborate on coding projects, and help others learn to code at this primarily self-directed, weekly gathering. All coding languages and skill levels welcome. For ages 8-17. Thursdays The Forge at North Branch 2-4 p.m.

Makey-Makey, Summer Breaky

In this 2-day workshop, you’ll learn the basic ins and outs of Makey Makey invention kits. We’ll use our creativity and computer skills to design interactive games to get not only our brains involved but our whole bodies as well. Ages 10-17. Tues 6/14 & Wed 6/15 South Branch 3 p.m.

3D Printing for Teens

Learn how to use a 3D printer and get certified to use the Library’s 3D printer. Ages 11-17 only. Registration required. Tues 6/28, 7/26 The Forge at North Branch 3 p.m.

Tiny Robots

Turn a small wind-up toy into your own personal tiny robot with crafting supplies. Registration is required. Ages 10-16. Fri 7/29 Emily Fowler 4 p.m.

Electronics Camp (4-day class)

Learn about electronics in our 4-day camp. You’ll learn what electricity is, how batteries work, what basic electronic components do, how to create working circuits, and more! Computer Camp (4-day class)

Learn how computers work in this 4-day camp. You’ll learn how to count like a computer (in binary), how computers “think”, what the components inside a computer do, and more! Robotics Camp (4-day class)

Learn about robots and programming in this 4 day camp. You will program a robot to move, wire it to detect obstacles, do experiments, and more! Chess Night

Exploring Western Philosophy

Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group

Breastfeeding Support Group

Catharine DeMore, a Certified Lactation Educator Counselor, and Susan MacKenzie, IBCLC, RN, CPN, RLC, will introduce different topics related to breastfeeding, followed by discussion. Professor’s Corner: a Discussion Group Devoted to Literary Texts

This series is made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Medicare Fraud and Abuse: Do You Know What to Look For?

Preserving the Harvest

Turning 65 Workshop

Alan Lomax was a field collector of folk music in 20th century America. His recordings are archived at the Library of Congress.
