n the anniversary issue of DIAMOND Luxury Culture we welcome you as our guest of honour – and there are so many reasons to celebrate in the pages of this fifth issue.

In our first year we have turned the spotlight on the most fantastic launches, stunning hotels, watches, cars and desirable jewellery, innovations from market-strong brands, but also from new names, whose high quality launches have merited our attention. We have assessed all of their unique qualities to bring you the very best of international luxury.

With our editorial maturity achieved, and at exactly the right moment, there will be a change of tactics: from this issue on, DIAMOND Luxury Culture is a quarterly publication. This adjustment will privilege leading articles and will allow a better highlight of the subjects that are so near to our heart and that support, once again, the connection between Portugal and Angola. ‘Variations autour de La Longue Marche’ é o resultado da visão do artista argentino Julio Le Parc, uma metáfora acerca do método criativo cíclico, da sua longa carreira e da própria condição humana.

Mestre na arte óptica e cinética, deste convite resulta a colaboração de Le Parc na quarta edição do Hermès Éditeur, apresentando dez séries de seis lenços únicos, numa edição exclusiva de 60 peças.

Cada lenço de 90 cm. de lado é único e conquista uma nova interpretação a cada utilização, consoante a forma como é usado, sobressaindo o volume virtual e o movimento tão característicos da arte cinética.

The Hermès Carré silk scarf has gained in movement. ‘Variations autour de La Longue Marche’ is the result of Argentinean artist Julio Le Parc’s vision; a metaphor about the cyclical creative method, about his long career and about the human condition as such.

A master in optical and kinetic art, this invitation resulted in the collaboration with Le Parc in the fourth edition of Hermès Éditeur, presenting ten series of six unique scarves, in an exclusive edition of 60 pieces.

Each 90x90 cm scarf is unique and conquers a new interpretation with every use, depending on how it is used, highlighting the virtual volume and the movement so characteristic of kinetic art.

Confirming the expertise of the craftsmen at Hermès, printing the scarves, using the ‘edge-to-edge’ technique, was the major challenge to overcome. The collection is only available on the brand’s official website. One silk scarf, countless journeys.

ançado em 2014, o perfume La Panthère, da Cartier, pretendia evocar uma mulher independente, graciosa, mas também rebelde quanto baste. Exactamente a mesma personalidade de Jeanne Toussaint, a musa inspiradora de Louis Cartier, directora criativa do departamento de joalharia da casa francesa entre 1933 e 1970.

A Toussaint, conhecida como ‘la panthère’ no seu círculo de amigos, é atribuída a autoria da introdução da pantera no bestiário da Cartier. Muitos anos depois surge a fragrância floral La Panthère, a reinterpretação do tema pela perfumista Mathilde Laurent.

O aroma renova-se agora numa versão mais leve, desvendando uma outra vertente do acorde floral felino original, simultaneamente magnético e luminoso. À imagem do perfume, a nova fragrância combina as notas brilhantes da gardénia ao almíscar aveludado. A versão Eau de Parfum Légère revela uma nova composição onde entra ainda a flor de Tiaré, que confere uma subtileza adicional à composição.

Quanto ao frasco, é uma verdadeira jóia concebida ao redor do perfil de uma pantera esculpida à base de ângulos rectos, directamente no vidro. A essência da mítica Pantera da Cartier.

aunched in 2014, La Panthère perfume, from Cartier, was designed to evoke a woman who is independent, graceful, yet also rebellious when required. Exactly the same personality as Jeanne Toussaint, the inspiring muse of Louis Cartier, and creative director of the jewellery department of the French house between 1933 and 1970.

Toussaint, known as ‘la panthère’ to her friends, is attributed with having introduced the panther into Cartier’s animal universe. Many years later, came the floral fragrance La Panthère, the reinterpretation of the theme by perfumer Mathilde Laurent.

The aroma is now renewed in a lighter version, revealing another side to the feline flora of the original, both magnetic and luminous. The new fragrance adds sparkling notes of gardenia and velvety tones of musk to the image of the perfume. The Eau de Parfum Légère version also reveals a new composition, featuring the introduction of tiaré flower, adding additional subtlety.

As to the flacon, this is a veritable jewel, designed around the profile of a panther and sculpted in right angles directly on the glass. The essence of the mythical Cartier panther.

Q

uatro obras inéditas levam a artista Joana Vasconcelos à ‘Grande Praça’ do hotel-resort MGM Macau, que faz da arte um dos seus principais atractivos. A reflexão sobre o papel de Macau na história dos 500 anos das relações entre a China, Portugal e o resto do mundo é a temática desta exposição.

As obras da série ‘Valquírias’, de grandes dimensões, foram criadas especificamente para aquele espaço. A inspiração veio do mar e da relação entre os dois países, iniciada no século XVI após um pedido do Imperador Ming, que convidou os mercadores portugueses a fixarem-se no território, iniciando os negócios internacionais.

Da instalação destaca-se ‘Valkyrie Octopus’, a obra central de proporções monumentais, que se senta sobre o grande aquário e se interliga a este e a outras três esculturas de chão da série ‘Tetris’ através de braços têxteis. Em harmonia com a arquitectura do MGM Macau, as esculturas são revestidas a azulejos, em tudo semelhantes aos motivos, temas e padrões da azulejaria portuguesa e hispano-árabe. Atravessados por formas orgânicas que convidam à interacção com a obra, incorporam bancos, para que os visitantes façam também eles parte da estrutura.

Coerente com o seu estilo pessoal, a utilização de têxteis e adereços de diferentes origens, combinados com técnicas artesanais, como o croché, bordados de Nisa ou canutilhos e os tecidos industriais são a verdadeira assinatura de Joana Vasconcelos. A estes materiais, juntaram-se ainda milhares de luzes LED, que contribuem para a espectacularidade da instalação. A apreciar até 31 de Outubro deste ano.

our previously unreleased works take artist Joana Vasconcelos to the ‘Grande Praça’ of the MGM Macau hotelresort, which has made art one of its main attractions. The theme of this exhibition is Macau’s role in the 500-year history of relations between China, Portugal and the rest of the world.

The large-dimension works in the ‘Valkyrie’ series have been specifically created for this venue. They were inspired by the sea and the relationship between the two countries, which took off in the 16th century after Emperor Ming invited Portuguese merchants to settle in the territory, thus initiating international trading.

A highlight of the installation is the central work ‘Valkyrie Octopus’, of monumental proportions; it sits above the large aquarium and is linked to this and three other floor sculptures of the ‘Tetris’ series through textile arms. In sync with the MGM Macau’s architecture, the sculptures are covered with tiles, featuring motifs, topics and patterns of Portuguese and SpanishArab ‘azulejo’ tiling. Featuring organic shapes throughout, and incorporating benches, visitors are invited to interact with the work, so that they can be part of the structure too.

In line with her personal style, the use of textiles and ornamentation from different origins, combined with craft techniques such as crochet, Nisa embroidery or trimming and industrial fabrics are Joana Vasconcelos’ trademark style. These materials are joined by thousands of LED lights, which add to the spectacular feel of this installation. To be enjoyed until October 31 this year.

PORTUGIESER REVIVALISTA Revivalist Portugieser

A história da linha Portugieser, da IWC Schaffhausen, remete os seus apreciadores para o começo da século XX, aquando dois comerciantes portugueses encomendaram à International Watch Co. o fabrico de um relógio de pulso com a precisão de marcha dos cronómetros da marinha. Em 1939, respondeu-se a este pedido montando o ‘grande relógio de pulso‘, transformado a partir de um movimento de relógio de bolso.

Passaram 75 anos desde que este pedido foi, enfim, tornado realidade. Para assinalar a data, foi lançado o modelo Portugieser Corda Manual Oito Dias Edição ‘75th Anniversary’, uma edição comemorativa que relembra o design do primeiro modelo.

Nesta edição foram utilizados os atributos icónicos da família Portugieser: os algarismos árabes, os ponteiros foliformes finos, a escala dos minutos caminho de ferro e o pequeno ponteiro dos segundos, na posição das 6 horas. Como derradeira homenagem, foi ainda incluída a indicação de reserva de marcha para oito dias, característica que dá o nome ao novo modelo.

Limitada a 175 exemplares em ouro vermelho de 18 quilates com mostrador prateado; e a 750 exemplares da variante em aço com mostrador preto, ambos são complementados por bracelete em pele de aligátor da marca de sapatos italiana Santoni. Peças de coleccionador que vai querer exibir no pulso.

The history of the Portugieser range, by IWC Schaffhausen, takes us back to the beginning of the 20th century, when two Portuguese businessmen commissioned from the International Watch Co. a wristwatch that would match the precision of a marine chronometer. In 1939 they responded to this request, creating a large wrist watch, developed with the movement from a pocket watch.

75 years have now passed since this request was turned into reality. To mark this date, the Portugieser Hand-Wound Eights Days Edition ‘75th Anniversary’ model has been launched, a commemorative edition that recalls the design of the first model.

In this edition the iconic attributes of the Portugieser family have been embraced: the Arabic numerals, the fine leaf-shaped feuille hands, the railway-track chapter ring, and the small second dial, at 6 o’clock. As a finishing tribute, an eight-day power reserve display has been included, a feature reflected in the name of the new model.

Limited to 175 watches in 18 carat red gold, with a silver plated dial; and to 750 watches in stainless steel, with a black dial, both are complemented by an alligator leather strap from Italian shoe brand Santoni. Collector pieces that you are going to want to display on your wrist.

Reflecting Angola

L

ino Damião é mais que um pintor – é um angolano que absorve o quotidiano caluanda, sem se deixar embrenhar por estilos demasiadamente cuidados ou fixar exageradamente na técnica. Usa a pintura, a fotografia ou a gravura, pinta traços, distorce figuras e fá-las transmitir a mensagem pretendida com simplicidade. Pinta ‘o que vê, sobre o quotidiano das pessoas, o que vem na alma’, com as cores quentes de quem é natural de um país ensolarado.

Nascido em 1977, o seu percurso nas artes começou cedo. Foi através do pai, fotógrafo do Jornal de Angola, que começou a interessar-se pela imagem, por desenhar. O primeiro prémio chegou em 1989, o Prémio de Pintura na União Nacional de Artistas Plásticos. Já depois disso, frequentou o curso de desenho no Barracão.

ino Damião is more than a painter – he is an Angolan who absorbs the Luanda day-to-day, without letting himself become too engrossed by overly careful styles or exaggeratedly fixating on technique. He uses painting, photography or engraving, paints lines, distorts figures and makes them convey the desired message in a simple way. He paints ‘what he sees, about people’s daily lives, what comes from the soul’, with the warm colours of someone from a sunny country.

Born in 1977, he embarked on his journey in the arts at an early age.

Influenced by his father, a photographer at the Jornal de Angola, he began to take an interest in images and to draw. His first award, the Painting Award from the União Nacional de Artistas Plásticos (UNAP), came in 1989. After this, he attended the drawing course at the Barracão.

Mais tarde, na UNAP, fez o curso de pintura e a primeira oficina de gravura. Foi membro-fundador da cooperativa Pró-Memória dos Nacionalistas, grupo que reunia nomes conhecidos das artes da nova geração. Com o objectivo de relembrar os grandes nacionalistas através de trabalhos colaborativos, da experiência enriquecedora ficam as mostras, a participação na Bienal em Cuba, Salvador e Porto. É ainda membro da União Nacional dos Artistas Plásticos de Angola.

Ainda jovem, era presença assídua no ateliê do pintor Vítor Teixeira (Viteix), mentor com quem entretanto fez duas exposições, em Angola e Joanesburgo. Recorda a interacção com uma geração mais experiente de artistas como Viteix, cujo ateliê era transformado em sala de aulas de pintura.

Later he took a painting course and the first engraving workshop at UNAP. He was a founding member of the Pró-Memória dos Nacionalistas cooperative, a group composed of well-known names in the arts from the younger generation. With the goal of recalling great nationalists through collaborative works, this enriching experience resulted in exhibitions, taking part in the Biennale in Cuba, Salvador and Oporto. He is also a member of the National Union of Visual Artists of Angola.

As a youngster, he was a constant presence in the studio of painter Vítor Teixeira (Viteix), his mentor, with whom he has since done two exhibitions, in Angola and Johannesburg. He recalls the interaction with a more experienced generation of artists such as Viteix, whose studio was transformed into a painting classroom.

Nos primórdios, Lino brincava com sombras e contornos a preto-e-branco. Hoje, os estilos com que mais se indentifica são o figurativismo, por vezes o surrealismo. Utiliza as técnicas que forem necessárias para retratar as cenas simples que vê e que deseja perpetuar: a pintura em acrílico sobre tela, mas também sobre papel, a serigrafia ou a xilogravura são apenas meios para atingir um fim.

Nos seus trabalhos reconhece-se a vida familiar do povo angolano.

Faltam muitos dedos para contar as exposições individuais e colectivas em que tem participado ao longo dos anos: Exposição Colectiva Artistas Angolanos (2014), 1.ª Paragem: Lisboa (2012), I Festival Literário ‘Rota das Letras’ de Macau (2012), Na Boca do Povo (2012), Feira de Arte Contemporânea de Lisboa (2010), I Trienal de Luanda (2007), entre tantas outras. O seu percurso tem também ligação ao jazz, através da produtora j.j.jazz, que realiza, desde 1990, os mais variados espectáculos na cidade de Luanda.

Viajar é, para si, uma forma de mostrar o seu trabalho. Em Portugal há alguns anos, o país facilita a comunicação com a Europa e com os países além-mar. Por Lisboa, a sua última exposição, ‘Luanda – Construção e Desconstrução’, no final do ano passado, reflecte mais seriamente acerca da cidade de Luanda e das mudanças que tem observado, a transformação da cidade dos bairros à paisagem citadina que tão bem conhecia.

De Angola para o mundo, Lino tem obras em colecções públicas e privadas de todo o mundo. Para esses países, já não precisa de viajar. A sua obra fala por si.

In his early days, Lino played with shadows and contours in black and white. Today, the styles with which he most identifies are figurative art, and sometimes surrealism. He uses the techniques that are necessary to portray the simple scenes he sees and wants to perpetuate: acrylic paint on canvas, but also on paper, screen printing or woodcut, are merely means to an end, to portray the family life of the Angolan people.

Lino has participated in numerous solo and collective exhibitions over the years: Angolan Artists Collective Exhibition (2014), 1.ª Paragem: Lisboa (2012), 1st ‘Rota das Letras’ Literary Festival of Macau (2012), Na Boca do Povo (2012), Lisbon Contemporary Art Fair (2010), I Trienal de Luanda (2007), among many others. His career has also been linked to jazz through producer j.j.jazz, who has been putting on a wide variety of shows in Luanda since 1990.

Travel is, in itself, a way of showing his work. In Portugal for some years, the country facilitates communication with Europe and overseas countries. As for Lisbon, his latest exhibition, ‘Luanda - Construction and Deconstruction’, held at the end of last year, reflected more seriously on the city of Luanda and the changes he has observed, the transformation from a city of neighbourhoods into the cityscape he knows so well.

From Angola to the rest of the world, Lino’s works are part of public and private collections around the globe. He no longer needs to travel to these countries. His work speaks for itself.

Aclamado por chefs e críticos gastronómicos internacionais, os presuntos da marca são fruto de uma tradição centenária e de uma melhoria constante.

O leve processo de salga, permitindo a perfeita conservação das peças, é uma das características essenciais do presunto Joselito.

Mas, bem antes da salga, vem a preocupação com a matéria-prima – o porco ibérico –, criado em plena natureza, numa floresta de carvalhos e sobreiros, alimentando-se das bolotas encontradas no próprio ecossistema. Para que este seja preservado, são plantadas cerca de 70 a 80 mil árvores por ano. As características desta alimentação rica em ácido oleico e antioxidantes fazem do produto um alimento mais saudável que os demais presuntos.

No processo que leva ao produto final, cada estação do ano tem as suas especificidades: no Inverno, as peças são colocadas em secadores naturais, para que a perda de água seja promovida; na Primavera e Verão, faz-se a sudação do presunto, que fará com que a gordura penetre nas fibras musculares; já no Outono, começa o envelhecimento da peça, em adegas debaixo da terra – e aqui ficará por vários anos. No caso do Jamón Joselito Vintage, a cura iniciou-se em 2006 e só este ano terminou.

oselito is a name that, as soon as you know it, you won’t want to forget it. Acclaimed by chefs and food critics around the globe, the brand’s hams are the result of a centuries-old tradition and of ongoing improvement.

The light salting process, allowing the perfect preservation of the meat, is one of the essential characteristics of Joselito ham. But, way before the salting comes concern for the raw material – the Iberian pig – raised in oak and cork tree forests, feeding on the acorns found in this ecosystem. In order for this ecosystem to be preserved, 70 to 80 thousand new trees are planted each year. Their diet rich in oleic acid and antioxidants make this particular ham healthier than other products.

Each season plays its part in the process leading to the final product: in winter, the hams are placed in natural driers, in order to promote the loss of water; in spring and summer, the ham is sweated, causing the fat to penetrate the muscle fibres; autumn sees the beginning of the hams being aged in cellars below the ground, where they will remain for several years. The ageing process of the Jamón Joselito Vintage for example began in 2006 and only ended this year.

The ‘Baúl Joselito Vintage’ is a limited edition of the Joselito collection, and is dedicated to all travel lovers. The brand has recreated the classic travel trunk, containing its most exclusive products (the Jamón Joselito Vintage), a ham knife by Porsche, an embroidered apron, a manual about how to cut and preserve the ham and a cookbook by Ferran Adrià.

Open since 2008, the chocolate factory, faithful to traditional methods, believes that the difference of the chocolates it makes can be felt in the taste and in the experience offered by each of them.

These chocolates, freshly produced each day, and with the wide range of Belgian Callebaut chocolates as their base, result from the creativity of a team passionate about chocolate, striving to create the perfect chocolate with each new creation. Respect for chocolate is law here: without rushing the process it is given time to cool down, and there are no added preservatives or chemical additives.

The simplest sensory stimulation can awaken the creative process of a chocolate. Chef António Marques focuses on the best way to transmit an experience through flavours. The Ubud Monkey Forest isn’t far away, if you take the Jalan Monkey Forest road, which crosses the main street, and head south. This Hindu temple complex and nature reserve is home to hundreds of long-tailed monkeys. Já revitalizado de corpo e mente, outro templo imperdível é o Pura Saraswati, construído no final do século XIX. O seu nome provém da deusa hindu Dewi Saraswati, da arte e do conhecimento. Aqui poderá assistir a danças tradicionais balinesas que têm lugar à frente do santuário central.

Na mesma rua encontra também o Puri Saren Agung, o pequeno palácio de Ubud, onde a família real da cidade morou até 1978 e onde moram agora os seus descentes. É palco de actuações semanais de danças tradicionais.

Mesmo em frente, outro marco da cidade: o Pasar Seni, o mercado tradicional de arte, que se estende por dois pisos. Recordações feitas à mão, como máscaras, esculturas, tecidos pintados ou entalhes em madeira, mas também artigos de cozinha ou alimentos, de tudo um pouco pode ser aqui encontrado. Chegue cedo e regateie, é um costume instaurado.

Imperdível é também Goa Gajah, ou o Caverna do Elefante, reconhecida também como Património Mundial da UNESCO. Para entrar, há que passar pela boca de um demónio, esculpido na pedra.

Ao atravessar não encontrará elefantes, mas sim estátuas, fontes e jardins de uma beleza estonteante. É obrigatório o uso de ‘sarong’ (uma veste utilizada para cobrir as pernas) para entrar na caverna.

Cedo irá perceber que a fé move o povo balinês. Há rituais religiosos a cada esquina e oferendas colocadas em frente às casas, lojas e templos.

With your mind and body revitalised, why not pay a visit to another must-see temple, Pura Saraswati, built at the end of the 19th century. Its name comes from the Hindu god of art and knowledge, Dewi Saraswati. Here you can watch traditional Balinese dancing, performed in front of the central sanctuary.

In the same road you’ll also find the Puri Saren Agung, the small palace of Ubud, where the royal family lived until 1978 and where the family’s descendents live now. This is also the venue of weekly traditional dance performances.

Right opposite you’ll find another of the town’s landmarks: the Pasar Seni, the traditional art market, developing over two floors. A little of everything can be found here, from handcrafted mementoes, such as masks, sculptures, painted fabrics or wooden carvings, to cooking items or food. Get here early and haggle a bargain, according to local custom.

The Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave, is also a must-see attraction, and equally recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. To enter it, you have to pass through the mouth of a demon, sculpted in the rock. You won’t find any elephants when you get inside, but you will find statues, fountains and gardens of breathtaking beauty.

Visitors to the cave must wear a sarong to enter.

You’ll soon notice that faith is what moves the Balinese people. There are religious rituals on every corner, and offerings placed in front of houses, shops and temples. The Viceroy Bali hotel is pleased to give you lessons on how to make an offering to the gods, using coconut palm leaves.

ngola Fashion Week (AFW) celebra, uma vez mais, a criatividade e o encanto da moda angolana e internacional. Em três dias repletos de convidados VIP e na presença de um público seleccionado, o tema do evento, o Imbondeiro, permitiu aos participantes desenvolver uma conversa a partir da árvore mítica, simbolizando a angolanidade.

O evento foi preparado ao pormenor, com o apoio de arquitectos e decoradores que planearam as várias áreas de lazer, entretenimento e activação de marcas. Adriana Birolli, Débora Montenegro, Rafael Zulu e Josie Pessoa foram os modelos e actores convidados a desfilar nesta edição do AFW. Over three days packed with VIP guests and before a select audience, the event’s theme, the Baobab Tree, allowed participants to develop a conversation from the mythical tree and symbol of ‘Angolaness’.

The event was prepared in fine detail, with the support of architects and decorators, who planned the various leisure, entertainment and brand activation areas. Dos desfiles, as tendências predominantes a anotar são a utilização arrojada da cor, dos acessórios e dos cortes ousados. A Closet, presente pela segunda vez no AFW, mostrou a sua aposta nas linhas horizontais e verticais e nas cores fortes, como o azul, o vermelho e o branco – simbolizando o mar, a paixão e a cultura – para a Primavera-Verão de 2016, traduzidas em peças-chave como os calções, os vestidos e os blazers.

Patrícia Valente, responsável pela marca, explica como esta se apropriou do tema geral do AFW, trazendo para o palco a sua visão, à qual chamou Globalização: ‘A Closet quis interligar a ideia do patriotismo e nacionalismo que foi beber ao tema geral do Angola Fashion Week, ao mesmo tempo que pretendeu reforçar a ideia da internacionalização através do tema que escolheu especificamente para o seu desfile’.

Standout trends within the fashion shows included the bold use of colour, of accessories and of daring cuts. Closet, present for the second time at AFW, revealed its designs in horizontal and vertical lines and strong colours, such as blue, red and white – symbolising the sea, passion and culture – for springsummer 2016, translated into key elements such as shorts, dresses and blazers.

Brand head Patrícia Valente explains how it adopted the general AFW theme, bringing its vision to the catwalk, calling it Globalisation: ‘Closet wanted to intertwine the idea of patriotism and nationalism inspired by the general theme of Angola Fashion Week, at the same time as intending to strengthen the idea of internationalisation through the theme it specifically chose for its show’.

Closet commercial director and fashion designer Pedro Baptista adds that ‘the development process behind the pieces is based on different markets uniting and interacting, bringing people and merchandise of similar yet varied tastes together, suggesting that globalisation also has a conscious, responsible and supportive role to play’.

Christophe Claret é uma das poucas marcas de alta relojoaria suíças que tem colocado nos últimos anos algum do seu talento ao serviço de um certo tipo de mulheres que não se contentam com o simples relógio que se limita apenas a indicar as horas e os minutos.

Um dos maiores especialistas em relógios complicados do mundo, a Christophe Claret decidiu há alguns anos deixar de produzir somente para alguns dos nomes mais sonantes da relojoaria suíça, iniciando uma colecção de modelos assinados com o seu próprio nome.

Perita numa das complicações mais exigentes, a repetição de minutos, a marca logrou transpor uma série de barreiras técnicas que permitiram a construção de modelos excepcionalmente elaborados, destacando-se três relógios capazes de reproduzir mecanicamente as regras do póquer, do vinte-e-um e do bacará. Mas para o génio irrequieto do seu fundador, Christophe Claret, isto não bastava.

Entre as centenas de ideias que trabalha continuamente na sua cabeça, Claret acalentava o desejo de construir algo especial dedicado a um público feminino que a marca ainda não tinha tocado.

hristophe Claret is one of the few Swiss luxury watch brands to have used some of its talent in recent years to serve a certain type of woman, who is not content with a simple watch limited to just telling the time. One of the world’s leading specialists in complicated watches, a few years ago Christophe Claret decided to stop merely making watches for some of the biggest names in the Swiss watch industry and embarked on a collection of his own models.

Expert in one of the most demanding complications, the minute repeater, Claret managed to overcome a number of technical obstacles, enabling the construction of exceptionally elaborate models, highlights of which include three models able to mechanically reproduce the rules of poker, blackjack and baccarat. But this wasn’t enough for the restless genius of its founder, Christophe Claret.

Among the hundreds of ideas continuously playing through his head, Claret harboured the desire to create something special dedicated to a female audience that the brand had not touched on yet.

O primeiro projecto, que ficou conhecido como Margot, teve um sucesso instantâneo junto do público e acabou também por ser reconhecido, em 2014, pelo júri encarregue de atribuir os Óscares da relojoaria. O Grand Prix d´Horlogerie de Genève, conhecido pelas siglas GPHG, galardoou o Margot com o prémio máximo na categoria de relógios femininos complicados. Uma decisão perfeitamente compreensível considerando a verdadeira façanha que o Margot, com as suas pétalas de malmequer retrácteis, tinha alcançado. O relógio não só era esteticamente muito bem conseguido, como a sua complicação inédita na forma do eterno jogo do ‘bem me quer, mal me quer’ apelava de uma forma romântica às mulheres a que se destinava.

Mas o sucesso pedia um sucessor pelo que, em Junho deste ano, a Claret apresentou a mais recente flor do seu jardim, o Marguerite.

Sobre o mostrador desta verdadeira jóia evoluem duas borboletas (macho e fêmea) ao redor de um malmequer simbolizando o passar do tempo, as horas e os minutos. Mas o encanto não se fica por aqui.

O espaço ao redor do malmequer, cujo centro é um rubi, alterna entre os números três, seis e nove, e uma mensagem que, a pedido, surge como que por magia revelando a frase “Il m’aime passionnément” (Ele ama-me apaixonadamente). Um truque de magia, totalmente mecânico, a que qualquer mulher terá dificuldade em resistir.

The first project, known as Margot, found instant success with the public and was also recognised by the jury of the 2014 watch making ‘Oscars’, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, also known as GPHG. The Margot watch was awarded the top prize in the ladies’ complication watches category at the event.

A perfectly understandable decision considering the feat that Margot had reached with its retractable daisy petals. The watch was not only very pleasing to the eye, but its unprecedented complication in the form of the eternal game of ‘he loves me, he loves me not’, romantically appealed to the women it was intended for.

But success demanded a successor and so, in June of this year, Claret presented the latest flower from its garden, Marguerite. The display of this true gem features two butterflies (male and female) surrounding a daisy symbolising the passage of time, indicating the hours and minutes. But there’s more to its charm than this.

The space around the daisy, which boasts a ruby at its centre, alternates between numbers three, six and nine, and a message appearing on request, as if by magic, revealing the phrase “Il m’aime passionnément” (He loves me passionately). A magic trick, fully mechanical, which any woman will find hard to resist.

cientista, geógrafo e viajante alemão Ferdinand von Richthofen foi o primeiro a atribuir-lhe o nome pela qual, hoje, todos a conhecem. A Rota da Seda foi, durante perto de dois milénios, o maior eixo cultural e comercial que o mundo alguma vez testemunhou, sendo ainda hoje sinónimo de exotismo, aventura e viagens a terras distantes. A seda, o produto pelo qual os ricos e poderosos da Europa e também do mundo árabe pagavam qualquer preço, foi escolhida como símbolo dessa imensa rede de comunicação terrestre.

Mas a seda não era o único produto que viajava com as longas caravanas de camelos. Nos alforges viajam também especiarias, linho, tapetes, porcelanas e as jóias mais preciosas. Uma história com séculos que a Piaget quis contar através de uma colecção de alta joalharia que celebra a Rota da Seda e o universo abrangente de cidades e culturas que a antiga rota englobava.

erdinand von Richthofen, German scientist, geographer and traveller, was the first to baptize it with the name by which all know it for today. The Silk Road was, for nearly two millenniums, the biggest cultural and commercial axis that the world has ever witnessed, being as of today synonym for exoticism, adventure and voyages to distant lands. Silk, the product so valuable to the European rich and powerful elite, but also to the Arab world, was chosen as symbol of this immense network of terrestrial communication.

But silk was not the only product that travelled inside the long camel caravans. They also carried spices, linen, tapestries, porcelains and the most precious of jewels. á uma década atrás, a MB&F (Max Busser & Friends) inaugurava uma nova era da relojoaria independente ao lançar o seu primeiro modelo em colaboração com o relojoeiro Peter Speake-Marin. O HM1 (Horological Machine Nº 1) estreava uma colecção e um estilo que tem deixado uma marca indelével em todos os apreciadores da alta relojoaria que não são imunes à inovação e à criatividade sem limites.

Ao magnífico turbilhão central inaugural sucederam-se o HM2, HM3, HM4, HM5 e HM6.

Cada um distinto entre si, mas perfeitamente reconhecível em relação ao género e estilo imposto pelo fundador da marca, Max Busser, e das equipas que os conceberam e construíram.

Pelo meio surgiu a linha ‘Legacy Machine’, destinada a um apreciador mais cioso de uma certa relojoaria tradicionalista, pelo menos no que respeita à aparência exterior das caixas. Ao Legacy Machine 101, sucedeu o LM Nº 1 e o LM Nº 2 e ainda uma sucessão de criações artísticas inovadoras integradas numa colecção baptizada com o nome de ‘Performance Arts’ na qual o relógio, como puro medidor do tempo, não ocupa necessariamente uma posição de primeira linha.

decade ago, MB&F (Max Busser & Friends) heralded the start of a new era in independent watch making, launching its first model in collaboration with watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin.

The HM1 (Horological Machine Nº 1) debuted a collection and style that has left an indelible mark on every fan of luxury watches, wooed by innovation and limitless creativity.

The magnificent inaugural watch, with its raised central tourbillon, was followed by the HM2, the HM3, the HM4, the HM5 and the HM6. Each one different from the next, but perfectly recognisable with regard to the style imposed by the brand’s founder, Max Busser, and by the different teams that have designed and built them.

Along the way, the ‘Legacy Machine’ range came into being, designed for watch lovers more mindful about traditional watch making, at least when it comes to the outer appearance of the cases. The Legacy Machine 101 was followed by the LM Nº 1 and the LM Nº 2, and also by a series of innovative artistic creations featuring in a collection going by the name of ‘Performance Arts’ in which the watch, as a pure measurer of time, doesn’t necessarily play a leading role.

Ao todo, as criações deste verdadeiro ‘think tank’ relojoeiro totalizam 23 modelos, se excluirmos as variações de materiais utilizados para a construção das caixas. Destes, o 23.º modelo comemora uma década de uma performance criativa que, no que se refere à alta relojoaria e ao género criativo e inovador imposto pela MB&F, não tem paralelo na história da relojoaria. Antes de Max Busser criar a MB&F, apenas um restrito número de relojoeiros, entre os quais se destaca a Urwerk e Vianney Halter, se atreviam a transpor as regras clássicas que pauteiam a alta relojoaria, mas nunca com a extensão e o grau de inovação estética evidenciado pela MB&F. O HMX pode não ser a criação mais atrevida saída dos ateliês da marca genebrina, mas representa, sem dúvida, o coroar de uma década incrível que transformou o panorama relojoeiro contemporâneo.

Concebido como uma evolução do HM5, o HMX mantém a estrutura que lhe deu forma reforçando, no entanto, a imagem vintage que o associa aos carros desportivos das décadas de 60 e 70.

O modelo integra um sistema de indicação digital de horas saltantes e minutos deslizantes impressos sobre discos que, por sua vez, são ampliados e projectados numa posição vertical através de dois prismas.

A luz que entra através da cobertura transparente da caixa ilumina não só o topo do mecanismo do HMX como ainda se projecta sobre os prismas de forma a melhorar a legibilidade do conjunto.

No verso do relógio, a MB&F inscreveu sobre a massa oscilante misteriosa, responsável pelo carga automática do movimento, a frase ‘A creative adult is a child who survived’ (Um adulto criativo é uma criança que sobreviveu). A frase espelha na perfeição o credo criativo que norteou ao longo de mais de dez anos o fundador Max Busser.

Será pouco provável que alguns dos quatro grupos de 20 exemplares com caixas em titânio ou aço esteja ainda disponível. A ideia para esta peça comemorativa era disponibilizá-la ao valor de custo àqueles que apoiaram a marca ao longo dos dez anos da sua existência. Esgotada a possibilidade de adquirir um exemplar, restam os modelos futuros que sairão da mente irrequieta e sempre criativa de Max Busser, um homem que continua a contagiar tudo e todos com uma forma diferente de ver a relojoaria que, afinal, é mais arte do que outra coisa.

All in all, the creations from this veritable watch making ‘think tank’ number 23 models, excluding variations to materials used when constructing the cases. Of these, the 23rd model commemorates a decade of creative performance, which, when it comes to fine watch making and to the creative and innovative genre imposed by MB&F, is without parallel in watch making history. Before Max Busser created MB&F, only a restricted number of watchmakers, including standout names such as Urwerk and Vianney Halter, ever dared to break with the classic rules governing fine watch making, but never to the extent and level of aesthetic innovation revealed by MB&F. HMX might not be the most daring creation to have come out of the brand’s Geneva-based studio, but it represents, without a doubt, the crowning piece of an incredible decade that has transformed the contemporary watch making scene. Designed as an evolution of the HM5, the HMX retains the same structure, while reinforcing the vintage image associating it to sports cars from the 60s and 70s.

The model features a bi-directional jumping hours and trailing seconds system, displayed by dual reflective sapphire crystal prisms with integrated magnifying lenses. The light entering through the transparent top of the case not only illuminates the top of the HMX mechanism but also projects onto the prisms, so as to make reading the time easier.

MB&F has etched the words ‘A creative adult is a child who survived’ on the back of the watch. The phrase perfectly reflects the creative credo that founder Max Busser has presided over for more than a decade. It’s highly unlikely that any watch from the four groups of 20 units with either titanium or steel cases is still available. The idea behind this commemorative piece was to make it available at cost price to those who have supported the brand throughout its ten years in existence. So if this model is thus no longer available, we’ll just have to wait for future models to come out of the restless and ever creative mind of Max Busser, a man who continues to infect everyone with his unique vision of watch making, which is more art than anything else.

festa de aniversário do restaurante aura, situado em pleno Terreiro do Paço, em Lisboa, convocou seis centenas de convidados, personalidades das mais variadas áreas. O cocktail ‘dînatoire’ foi salpicado por momentos musicais, que deram o mote e encorajaram à boa disposição e interacção entre os convivas.

O início da festa foi marcado pelos sons quentes do piano e saxofone de Gustavo Teixeira. A festa far-se-ia, porém, pela noite dentro, desde o interior do aura, que oferecia uma tentadora oferta de doces e acepipes, mas, e especialmente, desde a sua esplanada, a paredes-meias com uma das maiores praças europeias e num edifício centenário e carregado de história, com uma vista privilegiada sobre o rio Tejo. Carlos Medeiros e Fabrice Marescaux, anfitriões e proprietários do aura, juntaram-se à celebração de mais um aniversário do espaço cujo grande intento é partir dos sabores tradicionais portugueses, elevando-os a novos patamares gastronómicos.

ix hundred guests from all fields of life came to celebrate the anniversary of the aura restaurant, located in Lisbon’s Terreiro do Paço. The ‘cocktail dînatoire’ was peppered by musical moments, which set the tone and ensured guests were in the mood to party and mingle.

The beginning of the party was marked by the warm sounds of Gustavo Teixeira’s piano and saxophone. In this historic setting, in an old building stood next to one of Europe’s largest squares, boasting spectacular views over the River Tagus, the celebrations continued well into the night, inside the aura, where guests were offered a tempting selection of sweets and delicacies, and in particular, on its terrace. Carlos Medeiros and Fabrice Marescaux, hosts and owners of the aura, joined in the celebrations for another birthday of their restaurant, the main purpose of which is to take Portuguese flavours to new gastronomic heights.

Demostrando esta mesma dinâmica, o grupo Cantares Alentejanos juntou-se à cantora lírica Yolanda Soares – que entrou no recinto num fabuloso Aston Martin, acompanhada de Carlos Medeiros – e aos The Guest, para que não faltassem notas musicais a esta noite especial.

E porque não há aniversário sem bolo, o que marcou este aniversário foi muito especial: subiu ao palco uma réplica de um bolo que integra um dos quadros da exposição ‘Banquetes Improváveis’, oferecido pelo próprio pintor Júlio Quaresma, cuja entrada foi recebida com um brinde colectivo com champanhe. O verdadeiro bolo, esse foi oferecido a uma instituição de apoio aos sem-abrigo, em Lisboa.

Após cantar-se os parabéns e serem feitos os últimos agradecimentos da noite, a festa continuou com os sons ritmados do residente DJ Zuca, que animou os convidados até ao último minuto da celebração, numa amena noite de Verão.

True to this dynamic, the Cantares Alentejanos group joined opera singer Yolanda Soares – who arrived at the venue in a fabulous Aston Martin, accompanied by Carlos Medeiros – and The Guest, to ensure that music was a constant presence on this special night.

And as there is no birthday without cake, the one marking this birthday was very special: a replica of a cake appearing in one of the paintings within the Banquetes Improváveis [Unlikely Banquets] exhibition, offered by the painter Júlio Quaresma himself, took to the stage, while champagne was being served to all the guests. The real cake was given to an institution supporting Lisbon’s homeless.

After Happy Birthday! had been sung and the final thanks of the night were expressed, the party continued to the rhythmic sounds of resident DJ Zuca, who entertained the guests until the party’s last minute on this balmy summer evening.

In 1914 it moved to the Rua 31 de Janeiro, the city’s centre for luxury shops, into a building later classified as a ‘Building of Public Interest’. After years of growth and further establishing itself in Portugal’s northern region, with the opening of another shop right in the centre of Oporto, in 2008 it turned its attention to Lisbon, opening a store on the prestigious Avenida da Liberdade.

Apresentado no evento Tabletop Show, mostra para profissionais na área da decoração de mesa, em Nova Iorque, será a terceira parceria da marca com nomes consagrados no mundo da moda internacional, após Christian Lacroix e Marcel Wanders.

A inspiração para os motivos florais chegou de um trabalho elaborado pelo estilista de alta costura em 2006. Do vestido da colecção Primavera/Verão desse ano, criado propositadamente para a revista Vogue, chegam os contornos floreados; a elegância dos tons corais foi conferida por ser esta uma das preferidas do estilista. Da colecção fazem parte, além da gama completa de mesa, um serviço de café e de chá.

fter Coralina the perfume, comes Coralina the new dinner service, created by Vista Alegre in collaboration with Oscar de la Renta. Launched at the Tabletop Show in New York, an event for professionals working in the table decoration industry, this is the brand’s third partnership with established names in the international fashion world, after prior collaborations with Christian Lacroix and Marcel Wanders.

The floral motifs were inspired by a piece appearing in the haute couture designer’s Spring/Summer 2006 collection. This dress, especially created for Vogue magazine, lends the service its floral contours, while the elegant coral hues are a favourite of the designer. In addition to the full dinner service, the collection also includes a coffee and tea service.

tradição já não é o que era. Esta reinterpretação do tradicional traje de noiva de Viana do Castelo é o resultado de 900 horas de trabalho manual, 50 metros de seda natural, renda, veludo preto, o típico coração de Viana bordado e cerca de 70 mil cristais Swarovski.

O costureiro portuense Fernando Lima assina esta peça icónica, inspirada nas festas da Agonia e nascida da vontade de criar um ‘vestido de noiva monumental’. É a primeira peça de um projecto que dará novo glamour aos trajes regionais portugueses e pode ser apreciada no ateliê do costureiro. Para já, não se encontra à venda, apesar do interesse que tem suscitado.

radition is not what it used to be. This reinterpretation of the traditional wedding dress of Viana do Castelo is the result of nine hundred hours of manual work, 50 meters of natural silk, black velvet, the typical embroidery of Viana’s heart and about 70 thousand Swarovski crystals.

The Oporto-born designer Fernando Lima signs this iconic piece, inspired by the Agonia festivities and created with the purpose to design a ‘monumental wedding dress’. This is the first piece of a project that will give a new glamour to the regional Portuguese garments and can be appreciated in the designer’s studio. For now, the dress is not for sale, in spite of the interest raised.

rês segundos é o tempo estonteante que demora o 488 GTB a ir dos 0 aos 100 Km/h e a velocidade máxima ultrapassa os 330 Km/h. O irmão mais novo – e mais rápido – do Ferrari 458 Speciale foi apresentado no Salão de Genebra.

Mas nem tudo é velocidade: o motor, um V8 a debitar 680 cavalos às 8000 rpm, surge 40 anos depois do primeiro modelo, em posição central recuada. Muitas melhorias foram adicionadas, ao nível dos sistemas de controlo do veículo e electrónico, que farão da experiência de conduzir o 488 GTB a melhor de sempre.

De design escultural, este modelo é o mais eficiente, aerodinamicamente falando, de todos os Ferrari alguma vez produzidos, com uma eficiência de 1,67, sendo um record da marca. Atentos a todos os pormenores, os engenheiros aperfeiçoaram até o som do motor, criando um ruído mais límpido, robusto e facilmente identificável.

primeira do país do seu género’, lê-se num dos primeiros anúncios publicitários da loja Casa Havaneza, datando de 1905.

Nessa altura, já a loja tinha sido inaugurada há 44 ou mesmo 50 anos – a data da abertura da primeira loja perde-se no tempo, variando entre as datas 1861 ou 1855.

Numa altura em que não existia ainda a icónica Brasileira, a nata lisboeta reunia-se no Chiado, entre o Grémio Literário e a Casa Havaneza. Esta relação privilegiada com a elite intelectual da época estará para sempre descrita nas páginas de tantos livros de Eça de Queirós, Norberto de Araújo ou José Cardoso Pires.

he first of its kind in the country’, is the sentence we can read in one of the first advertisements of the Casa Havaneza, dating back to 1905. By then, the store had been opened for 44 or even 50 years – the date of opening of the first store is lost in time, being set in 1861 or 1855.

By the time there was still no iconic Brasileira café, Lisbon’s “cream” gathered in the Chiado, between the Literary Guild and Casa Havaneza. This privileged relationship with the intellectual elite of that time will always be described in the pages of many books

150 anos após a abertura das suas portas, o nome mantém-se tão actual e coerente como nesse tempo. O tabaco de origem cubana – os chamados ‘puros habanos’ – tinha já nessa altura uma qualidade superior, servindo de mote ao nome da loja.

Hoje, Casa Havaneza é ainda sinónimo de competência, um profundo conhecimento do mundo do tabaco e uma experiência envolvente.

A loja original, na Rua Garrett, colocava à disposição várias marcas de tabaco, charutos (inclusivamente o charuto de vintém, ‘a glória da casa’) e cigarros, e era importadora exclusiva do papel para tabaco ‘Zig-Zag’. Distribuía, também exclusivamente, o tabaco de onça da ‘Companhia de Tabacos de Portugal’. Rapidamente se tornou um estabelecimento de referência. Da sua rica história conta-se ainda o facto de ter acolhido o primeiro posto de telégrafo público do Chiado e de ter sido até dependência do Banco Burnay, na época em que Henry Burnay era arrendatário da tabacaria, por volta de 1864.

O cliente entrava no banco e tanto podia pedir um empréstimo, como comprar um charuto cubano. Durante a crise de 1876 anunciou-se mesmo que seria possível trocar notas e moedas por ouro na loja.

A Casa Havaneza é um pedaço da história viva de Lisboa, multiplicado a cada nova loja aberta. Nenhuma visita à cidade estará completa sem uma passagem pela mítica Havaneza.

150 years after opening its doors, the name remains as current and consistent as at that time. Cuban tobacco – the ‘puros habanos’ – already had by then a superior quality, serving as a motto for the name of the store. Today, Casa Havaneza is still synonymous of expertise, a deep understanding of tobacco in the world and an engaging experience.

The original store, in Rua Garrett, presented a number of tobacco brands, cigars (even the ‘vintém’ [old Portuguese coin] cigar, ‘the glory of the house’) and cigarettes, and was the exclusive importer of ‘zig-zag’ paper for tobacco. The store was also the exclusive distributer of rolling tobacco of the ‘Tobacco Company of Portugal’; it quickly became a reference commercial business rich in history. It hosted the first post of the Chiado public telegraph and was a dependence of the Burnay Bank, by the time Henry Burnay was a tenant of the tobacco shop, circa 1864. The customers came in the bank and could both apply for a loan or buy a Cuban cigar. During the 1876 crisis it was announced that it would be possible to exchange banknotes and coins for gold in the store.

Casa Havaneza is a piece of living history of Lisbon, multiplied in each new store opened. No visit to the city is complete without a stop at the mythical Havaneza.

t can be said that La Mer is the joint creation of Max Huber, an aerospace physicist and NASA scientist of German origin, and nature itself. The search for a miraculous formula started off as a personal quest. After a laboratory accident resulting in burns all over his face and hands, Huber started to work on a remedy to minimising the scarring, as he was unable to find anything in medicine or contemporary cosmetics to meet his needs. That was back in 1953.

Rich in nutrients, its ingredients included sea algae, vitamins and minerals, as well as citrus oil, eucalyptus, wheat germ, alfalfa and sunflower. The special sea algae, found off the Californian coast (USA), is sustainably harvested just twice a year, when at its most enriched, and then sent on to the brand’s laboratories.

This is followed by a bio-fermentation process using energy in the form of sun and sound, which aids in processing the active ingredients in the primary broth. This chemical process allows the sea algae to break down to obtain a concentrated version of the active ingredients it contains. And so Crème de La Mer came into being, acclaimed from the outset as the regeneration miracle from the depths of the sea.

Na gala, para a qual são convidados apenas os finalistas de cada uma das categorias, foram conhecidos os trabalhos vencedores dos galardões. Uma cerimónia em que a celebração dos bons trabalhos na área gráfica foi uma constante.

DIAMOND Luxury Culture took home two prestigious awards at the 24th Papies ’15 gala, held at the Figueira da Foz Casino last May. The event, organised by doPapel magazine, aimed at the graphic community, welcomed some 300 figures from the field and applauded work in categories such as magazines, newspapers and packaging.

Assessing creativity and execution in competing Portuguese graphic projects, the jury highlighted DIAMOND Luxury Culture magazine with the Grand Prize in the Printing and Lamination category and an Honourable Mention in the Magazine category.

Only at the gala event, to which only the finalists in each of the categories are invited, were the winning works revealed. A ceremony in which the celebration of exceptional works in the graphic design field was a constant.
