nhancing original beauty is the raison d’être of DIAMOND Luxury Culture Magazine. And we use the word ‘original’ on purpose, with both its meanings: authenticity, but also creativity, innovation.

To celebrate the latter, we want to share DIAMOND’s newest distinction with you, right in the first few pages: a major award, received at the Papies ‘16 gala, which praises the publication’s graphic quality at a national level.

The North of Portugal is our destination in this issue. After a refreshing dip in the pool of The Yeatman, awarded many times for the beauty of its location – an original sin. Salão Preto e Prata do Casino Estoril foi o local eleito para a 25.ª gala dos prémios PAPIES, no passado mês de Maio, com organização da revista doPapel. Uma casa cheia aplaudiu os melhores trabalhos do último ano na área da comunicação gráfica. A DIAMOND Luxury Culture Magazine destacou-se ao conquistar o Grande Prémio e uma Menção Honrosa, ambos na categoria Revistas.

A celebração, que reuniu os finalistas de 23 categorias distintas, iniciou-se com a exposição de todos os trabalhos submetidos a concurso e de um momento de networking, seguido de um agradável jantar no polivalente salão do Casino Estoril. Inês Gonçalves e Herman José tomaram as rédeas da gala, apresentando com boa-disposição e humor os trabalhos que se destacaram no último ano, aos olhos do júri do evento, constituído por profissionais da área da comunicação gráfica, procedendo a uma avaliação ‘cega’ dos trabalhos submetidos.

Ambos os prémios alcançados pela DIAMOND Luxury Culture reforçam a qualidade da publicação, precisamente numa fase em que a revista fortalece a sua presença de Norte a Sul do país. Estes prémios são reunidos a outros dois, ganhos na gala Papies de 2015, demonstrando a evolução e a qualidade crescente da publicação.

rganised by doPapel magazine, the 25th gala of the PAPIES Awards was held in the Preto e Prata hall of Casino Estoril in May. A full house applauded the best works in graphic communication from the last year. DIAMOND Luxury Culture Magazine was distinguished with the ‘Grande Prémio’ award as well as an honourable mention, both in the Magazines category.

The celebration gathering finalists from 23 different categories began with an exhibition of all the works submitted to the competition and some time for networking, followed by a pleasant dinner in the multipurpose hall of Estoril Casino. Inês Gonçalves and Herman José took the reins of the gala, presenting, in a fun and humorous way, the works that stood out last year, according to the jury made up of professionals in graphic communications, which had made a ‘blind’ assessment of the submitted works.

Both the awards won by DIAMOND Luxury Culture reinforce the quality of the publication, precisely at a stage in which the magazine is strengthening its presence up and down the country.

These awards join two others, won at PAPIES 2015, underlining the evolution and increasing quality of the publication.

Partindo do fascinante símbolo da serpente, sinónimo de vida e de renascimento, já aplicado em instrumentos elaborados na década de 1920, os metais e as pedras preciosas enriquecem e imortalizam as peças.

A The Ultimate Serpent Limited Edition 1, edição limitada a uma caneta, a nível mundial, é a peça incontornável desta tríade. Um método de montagem especialmente desenvolvido para a Montblanc permite a presença de um diamante de cerca de 6,15 quilates na parte superior da tampa. Preenchem o corpo da serpente, em ouro rosa sólido de 18 quilates, 1950 safiras azuis e ainda 153 diamantes cortados individualmente. No aparo é gravada a cabeça da cobra, onde dois rubis concedem o brilho do seu olhar. Pesando ao todo 130 gramas, com 99 gramas de ouro, é a maior quantidade do metal a ser colocado numa caneta-tinteiro. Um objecto de desejo incomparável.

ontblanc, the brand that constantly reinvents the world of writing instruments, is marking its 110th anniversary with the Montblanc Heritage Collection Rouge & Noir, The Serpent, composed of three limited edition pieces.

Epitomising Montblanc’s innovative spirit, these pieces combine writing with fine jewellery. Based on the fascinating symbol of the serpent, a synonym for life and rebirth, which already appeared in instruments created in the 1920s, these pieces are enriched and immortalised by metals and precious stones.

The Ultimate Serpent Limited Edition 1, limited to just one pen in the entire world, is the essential piece of this triad. A method specially developed for Montblanc allows a 6.15 carat diamond to be set in the cap top. 1950 pavé-set dark blue sapphires form the serpent’s body, which is handcrafted in 18 carat, solid rose gold, and then additionally set with 153 individually cut diamonds. The nib is engraved with the snake’s head, with two rubies brightening up its gaze. Weighing 130 grams in total, of which 99 grams are gold, this is the largest amount of metal used in a fountain pen. An object of desire like no other.

Angola Vista is a project that explores each Angolan province from a documentary perspective. Namibe was the first to be photographed

orge Coelho Ferreira é português, mas basta falar em Angola e os olhos brilham com a emoção de voltar a viajar. Fica até nervoso se está muito tempo sem regressar à terra que considera sua há muito e que fotografa de Cabinda ao Cunene. A sua aventura fotográfica começou por um projecto documental, nos idos de 2007, filmado no sul de Angola, no qual iria retratar a rota dos comerciantes no deserto. ‘Iniciei a rota com a intenção de produzir um documentário filmado. Fui afortunado pelas pessoas que conheci, que me mostraram a província e que partilharam factos, histórias, costumes da região pela perspectiva de cada uma. E foi com o Álvaro Baptista [parceiro neste trabalho] que andei a conhecer o interior do Namibe até à foz do Rio Cunene, por paisagens que pareciam mudar o seu aspecto de dez em dez quilómetros.

Durante o percurso e no meio do Parque Nacional Iona parámos no seu Omauha Lodge, local fantástico pela luz, envolvência e pelos sons da vida que este parque já recuperou. Foi aqui que nasceu o Angola Vista, um projecto de fotografia documental que tem como fim produzir um livro por província’, conta à DIAMOND. Destes dias relembra as ‘refeições mágicas, comidas dentro de uma enorme pedra, na sala de jantar’ e a facilidade com que a cultura, as tradições e costumes da terra o arrebataram.

orge Coelho Ferreira is Portuguese, but just talking about Angola is enough to make his eyes shine with the emotion of going travelling again. He even gets nervous if he spends too long away from the land he has long considered his and which he photographs from Cabinda to Cunene. His photographic adventure began with a documentary project back in 2007, filming in southern Angola, where he went to portray the merchants’ route in the desert. ‘I began this route with the intention to produce a film documentary. I was lucky with the people I met, who showed me the province and shared facts, stories, and customs of the region, each from their own perspective. And it was Álvaro Baptista [partner in this work] with whom I got to know Namibe’s interior down to the mouth of the River Cunene, through landscapes that seemed to change their appearance every ten kilometres. During this trip, in the middle of the Iona National Park, we stopped at its Omauha Lodge, a fantastic place for the light, surroundings and for the sounds of the wildlife that this park has already recovered. This is where Angola Vista came into being, a documentary photography project, which aims to create a book for each province,’ he tells DIAMOND. From these days he recalls the ‘magical meals, eaten inside a massive rock, in the dining room’, and the ease with which the culture, traditions and customs of the land stirred him.

O Namibe é a primeira província a ser eternizada pelos disparos de Jorge e musa inspiradora do primeiro de 18 livros de fotografia a serem produzidos. Cada fotografia é acompanhada de um texto em Português e Inglês. Além deste livro, foram já editados outros três, referentes ao Kwanza Sul, Huíla e Huambo; Benguela está já na calha. Sobre o que o move, explica: ‘A minha intenção como autor é procurar pontos de interesse de beleza únicos e próprios das províncias, como obras de arquitectura, históricas e actuais; formas de vida comunitárias e os seus hábitos; paisagens rurais e urbanas; e vida animal e natureza. A forma de apresentação é em tom de viagem pelos vários locais fotografados, fomentando, assim, o interesse de os conhecer por parte de quem lê o livro, proporcionando um cartão-de-visita deste país de uma interminável beleza.’.

Em busca das mais belas paisagens angolanas, o fotógrafo, que é também consultor de sistemas de informação, acampa ao ar livre e está dias a fio longe da civilização. Tudo para chegar aos mais inóspitos locais, guiado pelo amor pela terra que sente sua. Angola é, para si, um projecto para toda a vida.

Namibe is the first province to be eternalised by Jorge’s shots and the inspiring muse for the first of 18 photography books to be produced. Each photograph is accompanied by a text in Portuguese and English. Apart from this book, three others have already been published, featuring Kwanza Sul, Huíla and Huambo, while Benguela is already in the pipeline. When speaking about what drives him, he explains: ‘My intention as an author is to find interesting beauty spots unique to the provinces, such as historical and current works of architecture, community ways of life and their habits, rural and urban landscapes, animal life and nature. Presented as a travelogue through the various photographed sites, thereby fostering in whoever is reading the book an interest to get to know them, providing a calling card for this country of an endless beauty.’

In search of the most beautiful Angolan landscapes, the photographer, who is also an information systems consultant, camps outdoors and is far from civilisation for days on end. All in order to get to the most inhospitable places, guided by the love for the land he feels is his. For him, Angola is a lifelong project.

he exhibition ‘Fashioning the Reign: 90 Years of Style from The Queen’s Wardrobe’, held in three of the queen’s official residences, throughout this year, rediscovers Britain’s history through fashion.

Landmark events during her reign and, thus, in the nation’s history, items of jewellery, accessories and dresses make up this largest-ever exhibition of Elizabeth II’s belongings.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse (Edinburgh, Scotland), Buckingham Palace (central London, England) and Windsor Castle (Berkshire, England) have been chosen to present moments and items created by famous designers, worn by the Queen, from childhood to the present day, in a total of more than 150 outfits.

As peças exibidas em cada palácio foram seleccionadas tendo em conta a própria história que aí se desenrola. Assim, no palácio de Buckingham, onde muitas celebrações familiares e Estatais têm tido lugar, encontram-se conjuntos usados em celebrações familiares, cerimoniais e militares – lá encontrará modelos usados na sua juventude, o vestido do seu casamento com o Duque de Edimburgo e o vestido da sua coroação. No palácio de Holyroodhouse, a utilização do tartã, o axadrezado escocês, nas vestes reais será notória, enquanto que em Windsor são exibidos vários vestidos elegantes, usados em eventos oficiais, e outros, joviais, exibidos pela rainha em pantominas no castelo, por altura da II Guerra Mundial.

Nome incontornável e indissociável da casa real inglesa e desta exposição é o de Norman Hartnell, costureiro britânico que acompanha Isabel II desde a década de 1940 e que assina muitos dos vestidos exibidos, como o vestido do casamento (1947), o vestido usado na sua coroação (1953) ou o vestido que usou na investidura de Carlos como Príncipe de Gales (1969). Um dos mais ricos e belos vestidos de noite, usado por Isabel II numa visita de Estado à Tailândia, em 1972, usando seda branca e cristais, lantejoulas, missangas e diamantes cravados, é também da sua autoria. Em 1997, Hartnell foi condecorado pelos seus serviços à casa real.

Das jóias apresentadas em Buckingham salta à vista um alfinete em ouro com um rubi e diamantes, desenhado por Andrew Grima, oferecido pelo seu marido a Isabel II. O designer de jóias foi o único a ser premiado na categoria Design Elegante com um The Prince Philip Designers Prize, em 1966.

Inaugurada no Palácio de Holyroodhouse a 21 de Abril, dia em que se comemorou o nonagésimo aniversário da rainha, a exposição estará patente até Outubro de 2016. Seguem-se a abertura no Palácio de Buckingham, em Agosto, patente até Setembro, e do Castelo de Windsor, em Setembro próximo e até Janeiro de 2017.

The pieces on display in each residence have been selected according to the history of the location itself. Thus, at Buckingham Palace, where many family and state celebrations have taken place, there are pieces worn at family, ceremonial and military celebrations – items worn in her youth, the wedding dress she wore for her marriage to the Duke of Edinburgh and her coronation dress. The Palace of Holyroodhouse shows royal robes in Scottish tartan, while Windsor Castle displays various elegant dresses, worn during official events, as well as other, jovial ones, worn by the Queen in pantomimes held at the castle during World War II. A name inextricably linked to the royal house and this exhibition is that of Norman Hartnell, a British couturier designing for Elizabeth II since the 1940s, responsible for many of the dresses on display, including her wedding dress (1947), her coronation dress (1953) or the dress she wore for the investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales (1969). One of the most refined and beautiful evening gowns, worn by Elizabeth II on a state visit to Thailand in 1972, made of white silk and crystals, sequins, beads and encrusted with diamonds, was also created by Hartnell. In 1977 the designer was knighted for his services to the royal house.

A highlight of the jewels on display at Buckingham Palace is a gold brooch with a ruby and diamonds, a gift to Elizabeth II from her husband, and designed by Andrew Grima. The jewellery designer was the only one to be awarded The Prince Philip Designers Prize, in the Elegant Design category, in 1966.

Opened at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, April 21, the queen’s ninetieth birthday, the exhibition runs until October 2016. The exhibition at Buckingham Palace will be open from August to September, while the exhibition at Windsor Castle will open in September and run until January 2017. A unique and historic exhibition.

Por isso, ao primeiro restaurante do grupo, o Romando Sushi Caffè, situado na marina de Vila do Conde, somou-se o Romando, com uma cozinha tradicional portuguesa. Mais tarde completa o trio o Romando Privé, firmando o desejo de servir ‘as melhores e mais diversificadas cozinhas do mundo’, a tradicional portuguesa e a milenar cozinha japonesa.

Mas é o Romando Privé, inaugurado em Agosto de 2015, o mais diferenciado dos três espaços. Partilhando da mesma localização do restaurante Romando, em Árvore, Vila do Conde, este no primeiro andar, a decoração intimista e contemporânea é inspirada no conceituado champanhe Dom Pérignon, sendo o único restaurante parceiro da marca, não só em Portugal, mas na Península Ibérica.

O preto e o dourado contribuem para a aura de exclusividade sentida, bem como o ambiente a meia-luz e os espelhos. É o bar a componente mais proeminente do restaurante, com o balcão colorido em mármore ónix, retroiluminado.

Romando is a name that doesn’t go unnoticed in the north of Portugal. Comprising three restaurants, and a recently opened seasonal beach eatery, it came into being in 1990 as a family business. Rosa and Armando, whose combined names created the brand name, are the original owners and their project is continued by their children.

From early on, the desire to diversify could be felt. Therefore, the group’s first restaurant, Romando Sushi Caffè, located in the marina of Vila do Conde, saw the addition of Romando, with its traditional Portuguese cuisine. Later the trio was made complete with Romando Privé, embodying the desire to serve ‘the best and most diverse cuisines from the world’, traditional Portuguese and age-old Japanese cuisine.

Romando Privé, opened in August 2015, is however the most distinctive of the three places. Sharing the same location with Romando restaurant, in Árvore, Vila do Conde, taking up the first floor, its intimate and contemporary decoration is inspired by the prestigious champagne, Dom Pérignon. This is the only partner restaurant of the brand, not only in Portugal but in the entire Iberian Peninsula. Black and gold, the dimmed lighting and mirrors create an aura of exclusivity. With its backlit counter made of coloured onyx marble, the bar is the restaurant’s most prominent feature.

O evento exclusivo Sunset Fashion by Micaela Oliveira contou ainda com um jantar degustação de seis pratos elaborado pela chef Lígia Santos, com harmonização vínica do enólogo Carlos Macedo e Cunha.

O cocktail de recepção deixava antever o espectáculo que ali se seguiria. Num palco exterior, Micaela Oliveira apresentou criações exclusivas, entre elas vários vestidos de noiva e também leves e coloridos vestidos de Verão.

Após o desfile, os convidados deixaram-se guiar pelas criações da chef Lígia, que arrecadou o prémio de primeira Masterchef de Portugal e que é também criadora e directora do Club masterCOOK. Foram apresentados pratos como salmão gratinado com bouquet de espargos e vinagreta de citrinos, acompanhado de vinho branco, da região do Douro, ou um carpaccio de novilho com lascas de parmesão e rúcula, acompanhado por vinho tinto das regiões do Douro e Dão. Para terminar com um toque doce, a tarte de requeijão e framboesa com coulis de frutos silvestres foi combinada com um vinho do Porto Tawny.

n a welcome to summer, designer Micaela Oliveira chose Sunset House, in Vila Nova de Famalicão, for her latest show. The exclusive Sunset Fashion by Micaela Oliveira event also featured a six-course dinner prepared by chef Lígia Santos, with wine pairings conceived by oenologist Carlos Macedo e Cunha.

The cocktail reception served as a taster for the show that was to follow. Micaela Oliveira presented her exclusive creations on an outdoor stage, showcasing several wedding dresses, as well as light and colourful summer dresses.

After the show, guests were treated to the creations of chef Lígia, winner of the first series of Masterchef in Portugal, who is also the founder and director of Club masterCOOK. The dishes served included salmon gratin with a bouquet of asparagus and citrus vinaigrette, accompanied by white wine from the Douro region, or beef carpaccio with parmesan shavings and rocket, accompanied by red wine from the Douro and Dão regions. To finish things off with a touch of sweetness, the raspberry ‘requeijão’ cheese cake with a mixed berry coulis was paired with a Tawny port.

A night that had all eyes feasting on the beauty of the designer’s creations, the prime location of Sunset House and the edible art work of Lígia Santos.

TRO Perfume Concept é o nome de uma perfumaria à parte, situada em plena Avenida da Liberdade e, no entanto, abrigada dos olhares de quem passa. Hugo Banha, o fundador da loja, faz as honras da casa e guia-nos neste espaço singular. Desde logo que a decoração em preto e ouro, o atendimento à porta fechada e a aura de exclusividade que envolve a loja revelam que, aqui, algo de sui generis acontece.

Começamos, obrigatoriamente, por observar os perfumes de marcas internacionais que recheiam os expositores. São várias as aqui representadas, marcas de nicho vendidas ‘em registo de exclusividade, em Portugal’, ressalta, com visível satisfação. Os perfumes massificados em nada se comparam aos da OTRO, quer nos ingredientes utilizados, quer na metodologia artesanal da junção destas essências raras e de qualidade superior. Aliás, nem a forma como estes são recomendados ao cliente. Para bem aconselhar há que conhecer e perceber o que o cliente pretende da fragrância. A personalidade e a ocasião específica influenciam também a sugestão que é feita. Esta primeira abordagem com o cliente facilmente poderá prolongar-se por algumas horas. É um serviço complexo, prestado por uma equipa jovem e em constante formação. Para que o cliente possa desfrutar da experiência na plenitude, uma pausa na esplanada permitirá ‘limpar’ o olfacto enquanto degusta uma taça de champanhe.

TRO Perfume Concept is the name of a unique perfumery, located right on the Avenida da Liberdade, and yet sheltered from the looks of those passing by. Its founder, Hugo Banha, does the honours and guides us through this inimitable space. From the outset the black and gold décor, the service behind closed doors and the aura of exclusivity surrounding the store reveal that, something unavailable anywhere else is happening here.

We begin, of course, by looking at the perfumes from international brands, filling the display cabinets. There are many represented here, niche brands sold ‘nowhere else in Portugal’, he says, with visible satisfaction. Mass market perfumes cannot be compared to those available at OTRO, either in terms of the ingredients used, or in terms of the artisan methods employed when combining these rare essences of superior quality. Or, indeed, in the way they are recommended to the customer. To give good advice, you have to know and understand what the customer wants from the fragrance.

The personality and the specific occasion also influence the suggestion that is made. This initial approach with the customer can easily take a few hours. It is a complex service, provided by a young team enjoying constant training. In order for the customer to enjoy this experience to the fullest, a break on the terrace will allow their sense of smell to be ‘cleansed’, while enjoying a glass of champagne.

Regressando aos aromas, encontramos na OTRO verdadeiras obras-primas, como frascos de perfume da Atelier des Ors, com flocos de ouro que se fixam à roupa e à pele; ao lado, a colecção de Clive Christian, marca que cria o perfume mais caro do mundo, o No1 Passant Guardant; noutro expositor a colecção de aromas da Join The Club, que ao perfume alia um cartão exclusivo de sócio do restrito clube JTC, tão limitado que nem Hugo nos conta mais acerca das iniciativas levadas a cabo pela marca.

Além da perfumaria, a joalharia é também outra das áreas em crescimento. As peças ricas e originais são desenhadas de acordo com especificações dadas pelo cliente e elaboradas por um designer italiano, no Porto. Não têm marca, porque a ostentação não é o objectivo destas peças – é, sim, a beleza e a originalidade.

A Golden Concept, marca sueca perita em personalização de aparelhos móveis, é representada em Portugal e em exclusivo pela loja. Daqui já saiu um telemóvel cravejado a diamantes, com o nome do cliente, cuja identidade fica no segredo dos deuses. É simples perceber que a OTRO não é, de todo, uma marca acomodada. Nascida da experiência consolidada no mundo do luxo e pensada ao pormenor para se destacar e para se superar continuamente, está direccionada ao futuro. Apenas meses após a abertura já se planeia o próximo desafio. Para já, o forte é mesmo a perfumaria. Porque ‘vender um perfume é uma arte’ e os clientes estão cada vez mais curiosos em desbravar outros mundos olfactivos.

Returning to the fragrances, we find true masterpieces at OTRO, such as perfume flacons from Atelier des Ors, with gold flakes that stick to clothes and the skin; next to these, the collection from Clive Christian, the brand that makes No1 Passant Guardant, the most expensive perfume in the world; another display cabinet holds the fragrances from Join The Club, which comes with an exclusive membership card for the restricted JTC club, so restricted that not even Hugo will tell us more about the brand’s initiatives.

Besides perfumes, jewellery is another of the growing areas. The fancy and original pieces are designed according to specifications given by the customer and executed by an Italian designer in Oporto. They do not have a brand name, because ostentation isn’t the purpose of these pieces, rather beauty and originality.

Golden Concept, a Swedish brand specialising in the customisation of mobile devices, is exclusively represented in Portugal by the store.

One example of the pieces made here is a diamond-studded mobile phone, with the customer’s name, whose identity is under wraps.

It is easy to see that OTRO is by no means a typical brand.

Created from consolidated experience in the world of luxury and meticulously formulated to stand out and to continually excel, it is designed for the future. Only months after its opening, plans are already underway for the next challenge. For now, perfumery is its strength. Because ‘selling a perfume is an art’ and customers are increasingly curious about discovering other olfactory worlds.

Verdadeiros feiticeiros, partiram de uma gema assimétrica, no seu estado inicial, cuidadosamente trabalhando-a durante um ano, até que esta se tornasse no diamante que hoje abrilhanta a peça de joalharia. Para complementar o design, foram escolhidas ervas-garfo (erodium malacoides), flores de eleição de Jane Seymour, criadas por mãos sábias, um trabalho de algumas centenas de horas.

O anel, e a sua dicotomia de acabamentos brilhante/mate, foi visto pela primeira vez num jantar privado em sua honra no restaurante CÉ LA VI, em Singapura, aquando da visita da actriz para liderar a peça ‘The Vortex’, no Jubilee Hall Theatre dentro do Raffles Hotel.

Após este vislumbre, a peça torna-se parte integrante da colecção do grupo russo World of Diamonds, que a criou. Tem sido exibida em vários eventos privados no país desde então.

Quanto ao seu valor, o grupo afirma ser ‘inestimável’, também pela sua associação à premiada actriz, condecorada como Oficial do Império Britânico, e por ser uma peça única. O director, Karan Tilani, vai mais longe e afirma que o anel é uma celebração, ‘apenas comparável a um iate de luxo ou a um bilhete até à Lua.’. Mas, nesta venda, nem tudo se resumirá ao valor: o comprador terá de obedecer a um conjunto de critérios estipulados pela World of Diamonds – o que apenas o torna mais apetecido aos olhos dos interessados.

he name of this platinum, rose gold plated ring is The Jane Seymour, celebrating the career of the famous British actress. The ring is magnificently adorned with a rare 2.08 carat, cushion cut diamond of the ‘Fancy Vivid Blue’ category, with a VS1 degree of clarity, which was mined in Russia and brought to life by the hands of craftsmen in Geneva, Switzerland. Starting with an asymmetric gem, in its initial state, the masters carefully worked on it for a year, until it became the diamond that today brings sparkle to this piece of jewellery. Erodium malacoides, Jane Seymour’s favourite flowers, were chosen to complement the design, crafted by expert hands, in a work lasting a few hundred hours.

The ring and its dichotomy of brilliant/matt finishes, was first seen at a private dinner in Seymour’s honour at the CÉ LA VI restaurant, in Singapore, during the actress’s visit to perform in lead role in the play ‘The Vortex’, at the Raffles Hotel’s Jubilee Hall Theatre.

After this short glimpse, the piece became an integral part of the collection of Russian group ‘World of Diamonds’, which created it. It has been displayed at various private events in the country since then.

As for its value, the group states this to be ‘priceless’, as it is a one-off and because of its association with the award-winning actress, who is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Director Karan Tilani goes further, saying that this ring is a celebration, ‘comparable only to a luxury yacht or a ticket to the moon’. But in this sale, not everything will come down to value: the buyer will have to fulfil a set of criteria stipulated by World of Diamonds – which only makes it more attractive to those interested.

Titanium, zirconium, sapphires, amethysts, tsavorites, rubies, spinels and black diamonds help in the metamorphosis of the jewellery pieces, emerging in the shape of a flower. Zirconium is in fact a newcomer in the world of Chopard, making its first appearance ever in this collection.

uito se debate no campo da relojoaria a falta de interesse do público feminino por relógios mecânicos ou, num patamar acima, por relógios mecânicos complicados. Apesar de a indústria relojoeira suíça fazer um esforço considerável ao apresentar, ano após ano, propostas sedutoras neste âmbito, o facto é que é muitíssimo raro vermos uma mulher com um cronógrafo, calendário perpétuo, turbilhão ou mesmo um repetição de minutos, opções que se incluem, afinal, na lista de complicações de eleição do universo masculino que muitas marcas se esforçam por adaptar ao gosto da mulher contemporânea. O sucesso desta abordagem ainda está, diga-se, por provar.

here is much debate in watchmaking about women’s lack of interest in mechanical watches or, at a higher level, in complicated mechanical watches. Despite the Swiss watch industry, year after year, making considerable efforts to come up with seductive designs in this area, the fact is that it is extremely rare to see a woman wearing a chronograph, perpetual calendar, tourbillon or even a minute repeater, options, which, after all, figure on the list of choice complications in the male world, which many brands seek to adapt to the tastes of contemporary women. How successful this approach will be, remains to be seen.

Mas há um nome que parece querer trilhar de forma consistente um caminho diferente neste campo. A Van Cleef & Arpels é uma casa de visita incontornável para quem se aventure pela famosa Place Vendôme, em Paris. Nome de relevo no campo da joalharia desde 1896, a Maison francesa destaca-se por inúmeros atributos, entre os quais a criação em 2006 de um novo género de relógios baptizado com o nome de ‘complicações poéticas’. Peças que não descuram nenhuma das características estéticas que fazem dos relógios-jóia um sucesso entre o público feminino, mas que apresentam um elemento sedutor adicional que contribui de forma marcante para a história que cada jóia deve contar, e onde o tempo se esconde ou brilha ostensivamente ampliado por pedras preciosas.

Entre diamantes e safiras coloridas, estes relógios acrescentam efectivamente uma outra dimensão à simples indicação das horas e dos minutos. É o caso do Lady Arpels Ronde des Papillons apresentado este ano em Genebra durante o Salão Internacional de Alta Relojoaria (SIHH). Trata-se de um relógio com caixa em ouro branco e bisel decorado com diamantes, capaz de manifestar sobre o mostrador em madrepérola um inesperado ballet aéreo protagonizado por uma andorinha e um grupo de três borboletas coloridas.

Dançando alternadamente em círculos, as três borboletas aparecem e desaparecem por detrás das nuvens, marcando em sucessão a passagem dos minutos, enquanto que uma andorinha, símbolo portentoso de alegria, se encarrega de marcar as horas. Um ballet alado, no qual a Van Cleef & Arpels demonstra toda a vitalidade da natureza e expressa a passagem do tempo com a poesia única desta casa joalheira.

Mas por detrás deste movimento primaveril esconde-se uma complexidade mecânica surpreendente que inclui horas saltantes e retrógradas, indicação de minutos de velocidade variável e a possibilidade de desencadear a animação mecânica a pedido. Características que ditaram a necessidade de desenvolver um sofisticado movimento especificamente para o Lady Arpels Ronde des Papillons.

A designação ‘complicações poéticas’ assenta, assim, que nem uma luva ao estilo da Van Cleef & Arpels e representa inequivocamente um género de relógio capaz de seduzir a mulher contemporânea que, a partir de agora, deverá olhar de outra forma para os chamados relógios complicados.

But there is one name that seems to consistently take a different path in this field. Van Cleef & Arpels is a must-visit shop for anyone passing through the famous Place Vendôme in Paris. A major name in jewellery since 1896, the French house stands out for countless attributes, including their 2006 creation of a new genre of watches named ‘poetic complications’. Timepieces that do not neglect any of the aesthetic characteristics that make jewellery watches successful with the female audience, but which feature an additional seductive element that significantly contributes to the story that each jewel should tell, and where time is hidden or shines ostentatiously, amplified by precious stones.

Between colourful diamonds and sapphires, these watches effectively add another dimension to simply telling the time. This is the case of the Lady Arpels Ronde des Papillons, presented this year at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva. A watch with a white gold case and a bezel decorated with diamonds, adorning the mother of pearl dial with an unexpected aerial ballet featuring a swallow and a group of three colourful butterflies.

Alternately dancing in circles, the three butterflies appear and disappear behind the clouds, marking in succession the passage of the minutes, while a swallow, portentous symbol of joy, is responsible for marking the hours. A winged ballet, in which Van Cleef & Arpels demonstrates all the vitality of nature and expresses the passage of time with the jewellery company’s unique poetry.

But behind this spring scene hides a surprising mechanical complexity which includes jumping retrograde hours, variable speed minutes and the possibility to set off the mechanical animation on demand. These features ensure the need to develop a sophisticated movement specifically for the Lady Arpels Ronde des Papillon.

or Luísa Bernardes and Nuno Pestana, luxury possesses the power to save us. The founders of NOL Jewellers, a partnership (of a personal nature too) started 20 years ago, now present the pieces responsible for this redemption.

From a workshop-studio in Lisbon, with service behind closed doors, NOL took its first step towards the internationalisation of its limited and unique pieces by presenting them in Mexico. When the time came to unveil them at a national level too, they chose Torres Joalheiros, in its store located on the Avenida da Liberdade, to do so.

As três colecções de excepcional beleza expostas no primeiro andar da joalharia concentravam o interesse dos presentes. Pérolas, diamantes, ouro branco e amarelo, pedras como safiras e ónix e a forte inspiração nas formas da natureza cativaram também o nosso olhar. A colecção Saviours, composta por peças que ‘salvam da banalidade’, mostram know-how e uma ousada junção de materiais, com o uso ostensivo de pedraria. Por outro lado, a colecção Organic ‘salva do que é artificial’, usando materiais orgânicos, inovando nas formas e nas dimensões, arriscando diversas combinações.

Bastante distinta das colecções anteriores, a Euphoric, que ‘salva da banalidade’, coloca em relevo cores, mestria aliada a uma diversidade de pedras preciosas, resultando em jóias que exigem tempo para ser totalmente apreciadas.

The three collections of exceptional beauty, on display on the jewellery shop’s first floor, grabbed the attention of those present.

Pearls, diamonds, white and yellow gold, stones, such as sapphires and onyx, joined by powerful inspiration from natural shapes, also provided eye-openers. The ‘Saviours’ collection, consisting of pieces that ‘save you from banality’, reveal know-how and a bold combination of materials, with the ostensive use of precious stones. The ‘Organic’ collection, on the other hand, ‘save you from artificiality’, using organic materials with innovative shapes and dimensions, while risking various combinations. Quite different from previous collections, ‘Euphoric’, which will ‘save you from predictability’, highlights colour and mastery combined with a variety of precious stones, resulting in pieces which require some time to be fully appreciated.

Boldness, sophistication and creativity are the main raw materials of this jeweller couple, who choose to express themselves through the luxury of their creations, which they hope to see progressing from the Jewellery category to the Art category. And as art is international, their expansion will soon continue to countries such as India, Morocco and the United States.

Massimo Bottura, 53 anos, dirige um restaurante há 21 anos, com o qual conquistou três estrelas Michelin. Avillez lidera o Belcanto, que arrecadou recentemente o prémio de Melhor Restaurante Internacional do Ano, atribuído pela revista Condé Nast Traveller. Bottura encabeça o Osteria Francescana, conquistando o prémio de Melhor Restaurante do Mundo de 2016, entregue pela The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy (o Belcanto ocupa o 78.º lugar nesta lista). Ambos partem da cozinha tradicional do seu próprio país para criar uma ementa digna de arrecadar os mais distintos galardões culinários do mundo.

osé Avillez, 36, six restaurants, first Portuguese chef to win two Michelin stars. Massimo Bottura, 53, has been running a restaurant for 21 years, during which time he has won three Michelin stars.

Avillez is head chef of Belcanto, which recently won the award for Best International Restaurant of the Year, awarded by Condé Nast Traveller magazine. Bottura heads the Osteria Francescana, which won the World’s Best Restaurant 2016 award, from The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy (Belcanto ranks 78 on this list). Both are based on the traditional cuisine of their home countries, creating a menu fit to collect the world’s most distinguished culinary awards.

Para o chef italiano, a arte é a motivação por detrás de todas as suas criações e está obrigatoriamente presente no restaurante, situado na mítica cidade de Modena, no centro-norte de Itália, onde confluem tantas marcas de automóveis de topo. As 12 mesas, distribuídas por três salas adornadas com peças de arte contemporâneas, são o palco por onde passam conceitos e se transmitem emoções.

Ambos autores de livros de sucesso, entendem a cozinha como meio de comunicação da identidade colectiva gastronómica de um povo, sem que haja estagnação. Será este o ingrediente essencial das cozinhas de ambos os chefes? Bottura resume: ‘Comida não é só a qualidade dos ingredientes, mas também a qualidade das ideias’.

For Avillez, it is quality and daily consistency that make a restaurant stand out from others. Portugal’s past and its rich history are the inspiration for his six restaurants – five located in Lisbon and one in Oporto – using new techniques and unique creative ways of serving, in a constant evolution. As for Bottura, he bases his creations on Italian cuisine, reinventing, subverting and improving these flavours. In a country with strong culinary roots, the chef finally gets the applause of national and international critics, reinforcing the idea that the magic formula is ‘to always look to the past, but not in a nostalgic way. With nostalgia, we do not evolve,’ he believes. After opening another restaurant in Italy, he has opened Ristorante Italia Di Massimo Bottura, in Istanbul, Turkey, his first establishment outside his country, the menu of which also consists of Italian flavours.

Chiado is the location of choice for the chef Avillez’s Lisbon restaurants. Belcanto has been in existence since 1958, under his

guiding hand since 2012. Ten tables are framed by a stylish and sophisticated atmosphere, in tune with the romanticism of this historic neighbourhood of Lisbon, inspiring the haute cuisine that is served here as a ‘form of expression’, each dish containing its story, exciting, surprising. For the Italian chef, art is the motivation behind all his creations and is of mandatory in the restaurant, located in the legendary city of Modena, in central-northern Italy, where so many top car brands have their home. 12 tables are distributed over three rooms, decorated with contemporary pieces of art, setting the stage on which concepts and emotions are performed.

Both authors of successful books, they understand cuisine as a means of communicating the collective culinary identity of a people, without there being stagnation. Could this be the essential kitchen ingredient of these two chefs? Bottura summarises: ‘Food is not only the quality of its ingredients, but also the quality of the ideas’.

The Palazzo Fendi has been reborn, in the heart of Rome. The 17th-century building, Fendi’s headquarters since 2005, retains its impressive façade. apis Lapidem’, pedra sobre pedra, é o nome de um conjunto de projectos de joalharia académicos, desenvolvidos pelos 43 alunos da licenciatura em Design do Produto do Instituto Politécnico de Viana (IPVC). Aliando o ouro trabalhado através da técnica milenar da filigrana ao granito amarelo de Mondim de Basto, Trás-os-Montes, as peças oferecem às matérias-primas mobilidade, versatilidade e elegância. Na imagem, o projecto GENESIS, desenvolvido por Catarina Viana, Diana Capelo e Filipe Correia. As peças foram apresentadas ao público num desfile de moda em Mondim de Basto.

Combining gold, crafted using the ancient filigree technique with yellow granite from Mondim de Basto, Trás-os-Montes, it boasts mobility, versatility and elegance to the pieces. Cada um deles presta homenagem a um continente distinto e é aí leiloado: em Nova Iorque, a 10 de Setembro deste ano, continuando para Hong Kong, a 1 de Outubro, e finalizando em Londres, a 16 de Novembro.

Antes ainda, as peças poderão ser contempladas numa exposição itinerante que passa por Nova Iorque, Singapura, Londres e Paris.

Os conjuntos são compostos por um baú de viagem, elaborado à mão e assinado pela Hermès, uma cópia dos primeiros baús dos anos 1920 e 1930; uma garrafa-decantadora e quatro copos em cristal, peças sopradas, cortadas e gravadas inteiramente à mão na cristaleria Saint-Louis; uma pipeta em ouro branco, da Puiforcat; e ainda um livro com a história deste conhaque. Ao todo, estiveram envolvidos 50 artesãos que dedicaram cerca de mil horas à elaboração de cada peça.

A The Film Foundation, fundada por Martin Scorsese e outros grandes nomes do cinema, reserva e restaura filmes clássicos, preservando a herança cinematográfica para as gerações vindouras.

Sobre esta parceria, Scorsese afirma ser ‘uma excelente forma de destacar os programas de preservação, educação e exposição da fundação. Sem importar onde ou quando um filme foi feito, seja um século ou uma década atrás, a fundação compromete-se a garantir que todos os filmes sobrevivam para que sejam desfrutados pelas gerações futuras.’

ouis XIII cognac, by Rémy Martin, begins yet another long journey to celebrate the first expeditions, in the 1870s. Three very special lots have been created for a unique project – L’Odysée d’un Roi. Profits go to The Film Foundation.

Cellar master Baptiste Loiseau has created an exceptional and unique blend for these special decanters. The house of Hermès, art deco silversmith Puiforcat and Saint-Louis, one of Europe’s oldest glass and crystal manufacturers, have created the unique pieces composing these lots, which will be auctioned by Sotheby’s.

Each of these pays tribute to a different continent and will then be auctioned there: in New York, on September 10 this year, then in Hong Kong on October 01, and finally in London, on November 16. Before that, the pieces can be admired in a travelling exhibition, passing through New York, Singapore, London and Paris.

The sets are composed of a travel trunk, designed and handmade

by Hermès, a copy of its first trunks from the 1920s and 1930s; a decanter and four crystal glasses blown, cut and engraved entirely by hand by glassware manufacturer Saint-Louis; a white gold pipette by Puiforcat; and also a book about the history of this cognac. In total, more than 50 craftsmen have been involved in this, dedicating over one thousand hours of work to each piece.

The Film Foundation, founded by Martin Scorsese and other great names of cinema, reserves and restores classic films, preserving cinematographic heritage for future generations. Scorsese declares this partnership to be ‘a great way to highlight the foundation’s preservation, education and exhibition programmes. No matter where or when a film was made, whether a century or a decade ago, the foundation is committed to ensure that all films survive to be enjoyed by future generations’.

um problema que afecta, maioritariamente, o sexo masculino.

A calvície, expressão frequentemente usada para designar a alopécia androgenética, manifesta-se em cerca de um quarto da população masculina a partir da adolescência e após os 50 anos estima-se que 75 por cento dos homens tenham algum grau de alopécia androgenética. As soluções não são definitivas, sendo importante conhecer, em primeiro lugar, as suas causas.

A alopécia androgenética é o resultado, essencialmente, da estimulação continuada dos folículos por hormonas, nomeadamente pela testosterona que, por um mecanismo de transformação em dihidrotestosterona, ou DHT, estimula a célula da matriz do cabelo e conduz este a uma miniaturização progressiva, ou seja, na transformação de um folículo terminal, grosso e pigmentado, num folículo velo (‘penugem’). A calvície não tem, portanto, origem numa diminuição significativa do número de cabelos, mas antes numa redução drástica do seu tamanho e pigmentação. Este fenómeno ocorre apenas na zona do alto do crânio onde os folículos são, aparentemente, mais sensíveis à acção desta hormona. As áreas laterais e a zona posterior são sistematicamente poupadas.

Este fenómeno tem uma incidência marcadamente familiar e, por questões genéticas, é frequente acontecer numa família em que os antepassados apresentaram tendência nesse sentido, quer do lado paterno, quer materno. As repercussões podem sentir-se no campo estético, podendo a alopécia causar perturbações no plano da auto-estima; ou no campo médico, devido à falta de protecção do couro cabeludo – a incidência de radiação solar pode dar origem ao aparecimento de lesões pré-cancerosas ou mesmo evoluir para cancro cutâneo.

Quanto a soluções, se miniaturizado o folículo, recorre-se ao transplante capilar, precisamente colhendo folículos na área posterior. O grande desafio está na prevenção e minimização deste fenómeno através da inibição da acção da testosterona no folículo.

Isto é conseguido numa grande maioria dos casos com o tratamento preventivo com algumas moléculas, nomeadamente a finasterida, que tem resultados surpreendentes a médio e longo prazo em mais de 80 por cento das situações. Poderão ser associados outros tratamentos tópicos complementares, como minoxidil, serenoa repens, cafeína, entre outros, com o propósito de melhorar a estética capilar, a circulação local e trazer aportes nutritivos à estrutura capilar, de forma a obter-se um resultado satisfatório mais rápido, ao mesmo tempo que o crescimento do cabelo é estimulado.

Há quem viva obcecado pela ‘nudez’ do couro cabeludo, anunciada progressivamente, a cada espreitadela no espelho; há também quem deixe a natureza seguir o seu curso. Em ambos os casos, cuidar da sua saúde capilar é essencial.

his is a problem mostly affecting males. Hair loss, the expression often used to describe androgenetic alopecia, presents itself in about a quarter of the male population from adolescence and it is estimated that after the age of 50, 75 percent of men show some degree of androgenetic alopecia. There are no definitive solutions, which makes it of prime importance to know what causes it.

Androgenetic alopecia is essentially the result of the continued stimulation of the follicles by hormones, and in particular testosterone, which through a mechanism of transformation into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, stimulates the cell of the hair matrix and drives it to progressive miniaturisation, i.e., the transformation from a thick and pigmented terminal follicle into a vellus follicle (‘downy’). Therefore hair loss does not come from a significant decrease in the number of hairs, but rather a drastic reduction of its size and pigmentation. This phenomenon only occurs on the top of the head, an area where the follicles are apparently more sensitive to the action of this hormone. The sides and the back are systematically saved.

Due to genetics this phenomenon markedly runs in families, often occurring in a family where ancestors showed a tendency in that direction, either on the father’s or the mother’s side. As a consequence, the affected may suffer from lowered self-esteem, due to aesthetic aspects, but also from precancerous lesions, which can even develop into skin cancer, caused by solar radiation due to the lack of protection on the scalp.

The solution for miniaturised follicles is the transplantation of follicles from the back area to the top. The major challenge however lies in the prevention and minimisation of this phenomenon through inhibiting the action of testosterone in the follicle. In the vast majority of cases this is achieved through preventive treatment, with certain molecules, in particular finasteride, which shows surprising medium and long-term results in over 80 percent of cases.

This can be combined with complementary topical treatments, such as minoxidil, saw palmetto, caffeine, among others, in order to improve the appearance of the hair, local circulation and to bring nutrients into the capillary structure, so as to obtain a faster satisfactory result, while hair growth is being stimulated.

Some people obsess about their ‘nude’ scalp, progressively showing, with every peek into the mirror; then there are those who let nature take its course. In both cases, taking care of the health of your hair is essential.
