GERHARD NENNING WAR EIN HERAUSRAGENDER ÖSTERREICHISCHER SKIRENNLÄUFER DER 1960ER-JAHRE. ZWAR WAR IHM DAS GLÜCK DER MEDAILLEN BEI OLYMPISCHEN SPIELEN NAICHT HOLD, DOCH KONNTE ER BEI WELTMEISTERSCHAFTEN ZWEI MAL SILBER UND EIN MAL BRONZE ERREICHEN.

enning wurde schon als Kind in den Skiclub Arlberg aufgenommen, wo man auch bald sein Talent erkannte und förderte. Bald gewann er Jugendmeisterschaften, wurde aber Ende der 1950er Jahre vom Verletzungspech verfolgt. In den 1960er Jahren kehrte er aber in vollendetem Stil zurück, fand Anschluss an die internationale Spitze und feierte 1961 den ersten großen Sieg im Slalom des Hahnenkamm-Rennes von Kitzbühel. Erfolge in Abfahrt und Kombination schlossen sich an, bei den Weltmeisterschaften 1962 holte er schließlich Silber und Bronze. 1963 wurde er österreichischer Meister und gewann wichtige Rennen, darunter die Lauberhorn-Kombination in Wengen. Bei den Olympischen Winterspielen 1964 erreichte er gute Platzierungen, jedoch keine Medaille. 1965 holte er Siege in

St. Anton und Nordamerika. 1966 gewann Nenning erneut und holte seinen dritten Abfahrtsweltcup-Sieg in Aspen. Die Weltmeisterschaften 1966 verliefen enttäuschend und auch 1967, als der Weltcup eingeführt wurde, reüssierte er hier nicht. Schlussendlich konnte er sich im Abfahrtsweltcup als viertbester Athlet etablieren und gewann österreichische Meisterschaften. 1968 entwickelte sich dann zu einem der erfolgreichsten Jahre für den großen Stilisten. Siege in Wengen und Kitzbühel brachten ihm große Freude und Anerkennung. Bei den Olympischen Winterspielen konnte er seine Form nicht ausspielen, er gewann in diesem Jahr aber den Abfahrtsweltcup und wurde im Gesamtweltcup Vierter. Die folgenden Jahre verliefen nicht zur Zufriedenheit und er beendete seine Karriere 1970. Der erfolgreiche Skirennläufer aus Lech am Arlberg verstarb bereits mit 54 Jahren. n

A look at the successes and challenges of an exceptional Austrian athlete of the 1960s

GERHARD NENNING Gerhard Nenning was an outstanding Austrian ski racer during the 1960s. Although winning an Olympic medal was not his destiny, he did succeed in scoring two silver medals and a bronze medal in world championships.

enning was accepted into the Arlberg Ski Club when he was still a child, where his talent was quickly recognized and encouraged. He soon captured junior championship titles, only to be plagued with injuries in the late 1950s. In the 1960s, however, he returned in consummate style, joining the ranks of the international elite and celebrating his first major victory in the Hahnenkamm slalom race at Kitzbühel in 1961. Victories in Downhill and Combined followed, and he ultimately captured silver and bronze at the 1962 World Championships. In 1963 Nenning became Austrian champion and won major races, including the Lauberhorn Combined in Wengen. He achieved good placings at the 1964 Winter Olympics, but did not bring home a medal. In 1965 he scored victories in St. Anton and North

America. Nenning won again in 1966, taking his third Downhill victory at the World Cup in Aspen. The 1966 World Championships were disappointing, and again in 1967, when the World Cup was instituted, Nenning didn’t fare well. In the end, he was able to establish himself as the fourth best athlete in the Downhill World Cup and went on to win Austrian championships. The year 1968 turned out to be one of the most successful years for this stylistic great. Victories in Wengen and Kitzbühel brought him great satisfaction and accolades. He was unable to perform to his potential at the Winter Olympics, but he won the Downhill World Cup and finished fourth in the overall World Cup that year. The following years did not prove successful and Nenning retired from racing in 1970. The accomplished ski racer from Lech am Arlberg died at n the age of 54.

Als es zum Probeschuss kommt, hat Max die siebte Kugel geladen. Er legt an, zielt und drückt ab … Freischützen gibt es auch in Vorarlberg. Im Bregenzerwald auf der Schnepfegg – einer Anhöhe oberhalb von Schnepfau – soll ein Schütze, laut Sage, mit dem Teufel im Bunde gestanden sein. Mit einem Schuss auf ein Kruzifix habe er sich treffsichere Freikugeln erkauft und damit jedes Wild erlegt, verewigt in einem Gemälde in der Auer Kirche. Bregenzer Festspiele 17. Juli – 18. A small village in Germany shortly after the Thirty Years' War: The clerk Max is in love with Agathe, the daughter of the local forest ranger. But in order to be able to marry her, Max has to comply with the custom of winning a shooting contest - an unrealizable task for the man. The war veteran Kaspar is also aware of the challenge and persuades Max to join him at midnight in the Wolf's Gorge to cast "free bullets" that never miss their mark.

By shooting at a crucifix, legend has it that he bought himself unerring "free bullets" and used them to bag any game he shot at, a folk tale that has been immortalized in a painting in the church in Auer. Michael Moosbrugger, der 1996 die Verantwortung für das Traditionshaus übernommen hat, erzählt, dass die klösterliche Tradition auch heute noch einen Einfluss auf die Betriebsführung ausübt. Nicht nur, dass man gemeinsam nach der Ernte das Einbringen der Ernte mit einer Segnung und dem traditionellen Martinigansel feiert, sondern dass der Geist der Zisterzienser in vielen Entscheidungen ein wichtiges Leitmotiv bietet. The cultural Heritage of Austrian Wine

One of Austria’s oldest and richest-in-tradition wine estates will celebrate its 850th vintage with the 2020 harvest. The history of Schloss Gobelsburg is closely interwoven with that of the Cistercian Order, which spread from Burgundy throughout all of Europe and arrived at the Danube in the twelfth century. In the year 1171, the monks of Zwettl Abbey obtained a farmyard at the foot of the famous vineyard Ried HEILIGENSTEIN near Langenlois. That year saw the cornerstone laid for a tradition that would then grow and flourish over hundreds of years.

he Renaissance chateau with its baroque accretions nestles picturesquely into the gentle terraced vineyards of the Danube River Valley. When travelling from Vienna and coming upon the first vineyards at Fels am Wagram, the attentive visitor will notice hilly landscapes moulded from a soil called loess, in which the flagship grape variety of Austria – Grüner Veltliner – is cultivated predominantly. Approaching the estate, the impressive terraced vineyards of Ried HEILIGENSTEIN arise on the right, its expression best characterised by the Riesling that grows there. Historians are keenly aware of the significance of this vineyard site, which is not only unique in Europe for its geologic makeup, but also occupies a historically pre-eminent position in Austria’s viticultural landscape. Arriving at Gobelsburg, visitors are immediately aware of the eye-catching ensemble constellation, which reaches back through history to pre-Celtic habitation some 4,000 years ago. Entering the inner courtyard, one is immediately embraced by a sense of security. A sundial shows that even in modern times, the Cistercian leitmotif of ‘simplicity & strictness’ most definitely retains its relevance. The door to the wine cellar creaks open, and automatically upon entering one breathes the characteristic & familiar cellar aroma that remains so difficult to describe. The visitor proceeds

onward through corridors hundreds of years old, past wine in barrels & bottles, until arriving at the core of the cellar facilities – a cloister whose centre serves as a fountain of light, air and water. Michael Moosbrugger, who took over management of this traditional house in 1996, tells us that the monastic ways still exert their influence on operational matters today. Not only that folks celebrate the yield of the harvest together after picking, and feast on the traditional Sankt Martin’s Day goose, but also that the spirit of the Cistercians remains an important influence on many decisions. And at the wine tasting in these historic chambers, one begins by becoming acquainted with the classic wines of the Danube Valley – Gebietswein (regional wine), Ortswein (village wine) and Riedenwein (harvested from individual vineyards) serve as points of focus for the estate. There is also a series of specialties that demands attention as well. The fine red wines of the Pinot family, or the sweet wines – but their classy sparkling wines (Sekt) are now also numbered among the best that Austria has to offer. And then the subject ‘Maturity in Wine’ receives special attention in the line of wines known as TRADITION.
