Can you believe it’s halfway through summer? Another month, another article! I am super proud that all of you continue to fulfill your tasks and responsibilities for Key Club, keep it up. Don’t forget to continue attending service events because service never stops. It was great to see some of you at the Lakewood Block Party as well! Hopefully you guys enjoyed some of the local restaurants’ food and the wonderful firework show. Thank you Monkeys for coming all the way out to Lakewood to volunteer. Last but not least, thank you Historians for your monthly article submissions. Remember to attach at least 2-3 service photos and a personal experience from a member. I can’t wait to see and meet more of you guys at future events.

My Key Club Story How did you get involved with Key Club? Share your experience!

When I joined key club as a freshman, I was a nervous, shy person. I was actually scared when I went to the first meeting because never have I seen so many people in one room and when they did the cheer, I was even more intimidated. Then I went to my first event, the Long Beach Marathon. I went and saw the dedication in which so many members showed. It drove me to love and become involved with Key Club in ways I never thought I would. Then I went to DCON 2014 where I realized that Key Club isn't just a small club, it is a worldwide organization that is changing the world. I saw the impact we had on the Eliminate Project. My love for Key Club grew. As I continue my high school life, my key club story will not end. Key Club is an amazing organization that has led me to love volunteering more and more at every event. Jessica Doan, Lakewood I joined the club during my sophomore year of high school. I really didn't want to join, but my friend was actively involved and obviously passionate about this that he eventually dragged me into one of their summer DCMs. I still really didn't understand what the club was after the DCM, but he was really persistent about me joining. He invited me to a lot of the meetings in the beginning of the year ,but I didn't go to many of them until he grabbed me by the shoulders and pulled me into the classroom. From there I became more and more involved with what the club was doing especially in our own school. I became really interested in it and the President made it a fun experience for all of us. Ever since I've joined I realize that this club affects people across the globe in ways that most people never think of and it is a way to bridge the gap that separates us. I love it because of the way that it binds us in a bond that ties us together, especially because of the social distances at that high school level. The people that I've met, they are amazing and there is not really anybody quite like them that I've ever met. If there's any mistake I've ever made in high school, it is that I didn’t join this club sooner. Gilberto Luis Peraza-Martinez, Warren

Lt. Governors Message

Hey Green Monkeys! Long time no see! I hope you all have had a restful and wonderful month of July. Thank you to everyone who came out to volunteer at the Lakewood Block Party. It was great to have another division service event and see everyone's faces. We have reached the most hours and funds raised this past month so far, woohoo! Keep in mind that August is approaching and September will be here in no time. Start planning with the club you serve the first meeting and goals for the year. Keep continuing to have events throughout the summer as well. As for an update with the division shirt, it is almost finalized and will be shown at the next DCM which will take place on July 26 at the Bellflower Kiwanis Hall from 4pm to 6pm. See you guys at the Joint Social on July 21st with 13 South from 5pm to 8 pm!

Julie Trinh Division 13 North Lieutenant Governor 2015-2016

Hey Monkeys! I'm Christie Lee and I will be serving as this term's Spirit Coordinator. Words cannot describe how excited I am to watch our division grow as a family and expand. I currently serve as Cerritos High School's Spirit Chair which will allow me to devote my time to spread cheer for service throughout our community. I want our division to win the Spirit Stick during Fall Rally and be the group of Key Clubbers who show how much we love Key Club through spirit battles. If you ever see me around don't be afraid to stop by and say hi, or even ask how I feel! I would love to get to know all of you. If you love cats then we will automatically be best friends. Let's have a great year monkeys!

MEET CERRITO’S PRESIDENT

Hello and my name is Nathan Edwards and I am the current President for Cerritos High School Key Club. When I'm not serving alongside my Green Monkeys I enjoy running, basketball, eating, and watching Netflix! I love Key Club with a passion because the feeling of helping my community gives me a sensation like no other. My favorite event of the year is Fall Rally because of the unlimited hugs and terrifying rides! On the other hand, my favorite volunteer event is ACH Bingo, where we attend a weekly Bingo session with the elderly and assist by calling out the letters and numbers. I'd love to hear about your club's events and activities, so feel free to contact me at nathanke24@gmail.com for any information about my school's club or something you'd like to share! Each President will have a chance to have their own page. Check every month to see who will be featured!

Lakewood Block Party

On July 27, 2015, Green Monkeys had the opportunity to enjoy a spectacular firework show after a day of volunteering at the Lakewood Block Party. Held once every summer, Lakewood residents enjoy a pre-Fourth of July with their families near the Lakewood Mall. Volunteers helped at local restaurants’ booths and children’s game booths. Our very own Lieutenant Governor Julie Trinh also promoted Round Table Pizza by dressing in a pizza costume. Thank you to those who attended. Hope you guys had a fun time!

Monthly Recognition Club of the Month: Huntington Park

Lt. Governor’s Message: As Lieutenant Governor, I appreciate all the time and effort my Monkeys put into service. For this past month, Huntington Park has worked so hard to raise almost $1,000 for the American Cancer Society through bake sales. In addition, although they live pretty distant from the Lakewood area, they never fail to miss an event. I am extremely proud to present this recognition to them!

Officer of the Month: Bethany Nguyen, Warren Wow I’m so ecstatic to receive officer of the month, it’s such an honor! I can’t wait to bond with all of the leaders and create new memories with all of you guys. I just know 2015-2016 is going to be filled with not only good times but positive learning experiences. I can’t wait to serve with you all!

Member of the Month: Ritchy Lam, Lakewood Member of the Month? I never would've expected this. As a member of such an amazing division, it's quite surprising that I would be chosen for such a commemoration, but nevertheless I'm very honored. I hope to continue to serve Division 13 North in the same way and continue to contribute my time and spirit to Key Club.

Relay For Life, 2015 Energized to proceed with Huntington Park Key Club’s highly anticipated, influential tradition that provides an educational, sentimental, and determined atmosphere constructed of a mesmerizing unity between communities of ambitious adolescent volunteers and potential leaders and experienced adults and survivors, the evolving individuals that represented our club indulged in such spectacle by portraying their own interpretations of fun and incorporated their philosophical expressions in the fight against cancer, establishing a unique experience impacting the community. Comprehending that the community event consisted of various organizations and groups walking around a track at a local baseball field for twenty-four hours while obtaining funds through the activities offered at each booth, the expectations and anticipations pertained by the participating members, evolved from the experiences previously projected and the goals we compromised prior to Relay, motivated H.P. Key Club to walk acknowledging that its efforts are appreciated and express the D13N Green Monkey Spirit roaming within our characters, despite the overwhelming heat. To satisfy our goal of $700, our club sold various pastries, including chocolate chip cookies, brownies, carrot cake, banana bread, and cupcakes. Eventually, a couple of members carried some pastries around the entire event to produce more sales and advertise our club’s booth and overall participation. Huntington Park Key Club raised $995.59 for the American Cancer Society, stimulating a sensation of accomplishment.

Interpretation to Influence Indulging in various physical activities, offered by the committee operating the entire spectacle, that ajared the opportunity for all the participating organizations to express their evolving definition through impacting interactions, the summer volunteers comprehended the dynamics that provide stability and innovation to the club while obtaining and projecting D13N Green Monkey Spirit, incorporating strength and communication to the relationship existing between the members and the board. Assuming the evolving mentality and inquiry of an active character constructed of aspirations to revolutionize the definition of unity and community service, the individuals that volunteered to participate in Relay For Life with the Huntington Park Key Club invested their time and efforts not to express a statement of accomplishment but to relieve other individuals from enduring unnecessary, unfortunate incidents of cancer by deriving philosophy of hope and potential, stimulating evolution to the international movement.

The Green Monkeys of Artesia High School collaborated with the Ninjas, D13 South, to help set up and maintain a cheerful environment in the National Association of Elementary School Principals Race. Many of the Key Clubbers arrived to the race in the early hours of the day to set up and clean up before anyone could start anything. Key Club cheered on the runners during the race while also recording and keeping track of scores;. Afterwards, water was distributed to everyone who had participated in the race. The Green Monkeys did not only distribute water, but food as well such as bananas and other snacks to feed the hungry runners. We would like to give a humongous thank you to everyone who participated in the race and helped set up because elementary schools will give the children of our community a more suitable environment to learn and grow.

Submitted by: Nikita Advani The Lakewood Block Party is an annual event that the whole community looks forward to! With several types of food and game booths it was an event no one wanted to miss! Being just like a carnival, key clubbers worked several booths and concession stands and got to jump in the jumpers once their shift was over! Our Key Clubbers had an especially great time helping at the food booths by collecting tickets and helping take orders! Over all it was a fun filled event for a whole family and for the volunteers.

This past month we set up a booth for Key Club's Relay for Life at Cerritos College. Here we sold fresh fruit cups, from these sales we raised a little over $300 dollars!

Submitted by: Jennie Vong On June 13, 2015, Lakewood Key Club volunteered at Lakewood High School. Relay For Life is a life-changing experience that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, to remember loved ones lost, and to fight back against the disease that has already taken too much. Volunteers contributed by hanging up banners around the track field, carrying tables for setup, putting up signs with motivating quotes, and registering people into the relay. This was an unforgettable experience getting to take part in such an amazing cause. It was very nice to see those who came out to support as well as cheering them on. Later on, DCM and OTC was held at Lakewood High School where Lakewood Key Club sold ice-cream to fundraise for Relay For Life and raised about 70 dollars!

Submitted by: Bethany Nguyen On July 10th, Warren Key Club built trash cans that will be distributed throughout the entire city of Downey. Sacrificing sleeping in, they worked all the way from 8 in the morning to 12pm. They volunteered by putting trash cans together, making sure that everything is secured and ready to go. The event took place right next to Independence Park, where they steered clear from the hot sun! Trash cans were built in order to provide more opportunities for people to throw away their trash instead of littering. Which will result in a cleaner city and keeping Downey beautiful. Hopefully, the percentage of littering will decrease because there will be trash cans in every corner in the city of Downey.

Submitted by: Christian Alvarez On June 13th, John Glenn Key Clubbers attended DCM and OTC training held at Lakewood High School. Everyone had the opportunity to learn of positions they were either interested in or currently were. Also, during club updates we announced we will be doing future events such as the Disney Run, Wet N Wild 5k Race in La Mirada, and much more which will help our club flourish into growth and success. Recapping last month, our duct tape event at school helped our club become well known and showed what our purpose was. Students were informed that our purpose is to help the community in any way possible. Throughout the event, we raised money for the Eliminate Project.

For a while now, Downey Key Club has been volunteering every month at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital. Between the buildings, there is a playground and grill where patients are welcome to join together and have a barbecue. They have a chance to get some fresh air and eat some great food. Every month we send a couple of people to help set up and cook burgers and hot dogs for the patients and their families. We also get to interact directly with them and it is an awesome feeling to see the smile on their faces when you serve them their food.
