buddy system

3

Why is there a buddy system? The purpose of it is for neighboring clubs to share service project ideas and work together in local event. It also helps create a bond between the two schools and for the members to know each other more. The schools will be able to update each other and possibly do service events together.

OU OU AH AH OU OU AH... Hello monkey! I hope our first month together has been exciting and marvelous for everyone! We have already swung forward so much in our journey together this term. In order to do so we must all take the initiative to inspire our fellow key clubbers and dare to do more. There is so much love and strength with our division that we as a team can aspire towards our goals. If we haven't met before, my name is Julie Trinh, and I attend Lakewood high school. I enjoy long romantic walks on the beach‌ as I clean it. I also enjoy going on hikes, visiting museums and of course attending tons of concerts. My journey began at the beginning of my freshman year and here I am today, beyond honored to serve as your Lieutenant Governor. With my full heart and passion I want to make sure that Division 13 North is recognized for all the hard work that its monkeys do. Hello Green Monkeys! My name is Ansley Tran and I will be serving as your Division Executive Assistant for the 2015-2016 term! I am currently a junior and the Immediate Past Club Secretary at Lakewood High School. I am so blessed and thankful to be able to serve on the Division Leadership Team for our division; I am so excited and I look forward to an amazing journey and adventure we will all be embarking on this term. Together, we can make our community, and the world, a much better place. We will be able to make so many people smile with the service we will provide; we will make better and change so many people's lives, and also inspire many others. Serving as your Executive Assistant, I will do my very best to lead you all with the rest of the Division Leadership Team. Annddddd, a little bit about myself: I like spending time with my family and friends, traveling, taking pictures, listening to every genre of music (except country), watching anime and shows like Parks and Recreation, playing piano, writing, and learning new things. Let's make this term a great one; I hope Key Club will continue to make a difference in your life and in others' as it did mine. anSLAY (Ansley N. Tran) Division 13 North Executive Assistant

My name's Gilberto Luis Peraza-Martinez. I'm from Warren Key Club and I love this club! This club is inspirational on a level that some high schoolers will never associate themselves with. I joined the club being really skeptical about what the club was really about. Now though, I know this club, Key Club, is driven by the desire to be of service. I'm excited about the incoming term and what the current DLT will do for this Division. Besides Key Club I'm also a football player of Warren High School. I have 3 siblings, two older twin sisters and one younger brother. I'm in love with website design right now and want to go to Cal Poly Pomona to major in Computer Science. I'm very grateful for the opportunity that Key Club has afforded to me and I intend to work hard alongside Julie, Ansley, and Stephanie as your 2015-2016 DLT! Hey monkeys! I look forward to serving you this term as we swing forward. If you were there at Conclave, you know that my goal is to implement the acronym " F.O.R.W.A.R.D" which stands for Focus, Organization, Recognition, Widespread service, Aspire, Reaching, and Daring. You know what monkeys do! They swing FORWARD! If you ever need any help whether it’s with a problem your club is facing, advice, questions and anything else, don't ever be afraid to text, email or tweet me; how ever you want to reach me. I know this year will be unforgettable as we monkeys make our own history and leave a legacy to be remembered forever. Julie Trinh Division 13 North Lieutenant Governor

I hope you all are excited for the 2015-2016 term as much as I am! As my soon-to-be last year of Key Club, I am honored and thankful to spend the next year alongside this amazing team. I never thought during my freshman year I would be here, as DNE. Thank you to Julie and Ansley for encouraging me to take on this task. To new memories, progression, and SERVICE! On Friday March 13, 2015, Key Clubbers met in the afternoon at the Anaheim Hilton and Sheraton Hotel for a fun-filled, information packed, weekend. D-Con was a place to celebrate and learn more of what Key Club was about. Key Clubbers had the opportunity to attend Seminar Sessions that talked about a variety of subjects including “How to BEE a Leader”, “Magic of Marketing” and much more. Friday evening included a Service EXPO where members got to learn new project ideas, buy pins, and meet new and old friends. Also, Key Clubbers attended the first General Session that ended with a performance by Up with People. Saturday morning started with a healthy breakfast followed by a Caucus Session, where Delegates evaluated the qualifications of candidates for different positions. Non-delegates got to attend the next two General Sessions and more Seminar Sessions. The third General Session was dedicated to multiple recognitions, awards, and election results. The night ended with Governor’s Ball where Key Clubbers got to dance and jump… A LOT. Members also had the option of doing alternate activities. Sadly, Sunday came and many got Post D-Con Depression already. The final General Session was led by Jacqueline Tsang, District Governor, where she gave her farewell address and transferred her position. The Retirement and Installation Ceremony were held to honor the Immediate Past Governors and their Elects. D-Con is definitely one of the events a Key Clubber MUST attend, at least once! It’s a wonderful feeling to be surrounded by such bright, spirited people who are so devoted to Key Club. It is also very inspiring to hear about many peoples’ stories and their journey. If you have the chance, don’t miss out next year! It will be held in Sacramento, CA.

“DCON 2015 was a heartfelt experience. With intertwined feelings of happiness, sadness, and ridiculous feelings I can't explain, I am absolutely amazed by the amount of key moments that inspired me to remember this DCON in particular. Being my third and last DCON, I cried my heart out not only for that it was my last, but it was for the first time in forever that I actually felt accepted and loved. I truly felt like I wasn't alone.” Reginald Del Rosario, Lakewood DCON was completely and utterly overwhelming; seeing the sheer amount of spirit that people have and the love they harbor for community service. My third DCON, was inspiring, amazing, and all sorts of wonderful! I spent the entire weekend with people who love to serve. I laughed, cheered, and danced, waking up every morning with my voice hurting because I was always screaming so much the day before. One thing I loved about DCON was its ability to inspire me and make me feel like I can make a difference in this organization. I came out inspired, not only by the leaders I met and spoke to, but also by the dedication, sincerity, and kindness of all of the CNH members! PDS is so strong right now… Bethany Nguyen, Warren

“As my first and last DCON experience, it was amazing. I was able to meet new people and learn new things. Overall, it was a great experience. It made me regret not going all my other years so I suggest Key Clubbers to go!” Phaleap Pheakdey, Norwalk

Angulie’s Joint dcm To Spring Into the New Term, our LTG Julie held a joint DCM with D13S Ninjas’ LTG, Angelica Roxas which was held on March 28, 2015 at the Bellflower Kiwanis Hall. With over 130 attendees, the day’s itinerary was packed with a variety of things to complete before the day ended. At the DCM, usual club updates were given, each division’s DLT was announced, members were recognized, multiple games were played, and ice breakers were done. Some highlights include: rap battles where Angelica and Crystal Kem were challenged by Carlos Medina from Lakewood High and Julie was challenged by Jason Sun from Poly High. Also, the LTGs interacted with the members by having them choose from a small bucket to perform a random act such as running around the room so that the LTGs could answer a question which is how we got to know them better. Furthermore, Angelica and Julie popsicle sticks were used by members to guess which LTG does what such as saying “YOU STRESS ME OUT!”. Attendees were also able to hear #ANGULIE sing a short duet to Drake’s “Hold on, We’re Going Home.” The day ended with delicious food and a few videos of each division. Members also got to dance thanks to Reggie’s speakers. Thank you to all the schools who brought food and coming out, we had 8/9 schools of D13N attend. Also, thank you to Marawin Chheang from D13S for his amazing videos, Louanne and Donatie for letting us use their projector, and Jelean Barrientos for the cute banner.

Submitted by: Luis Gonzalez Last Saturday Huntington Park Key Club attended the 2015 Kiwanis One Day event in sunny Downey. The street faire provided the perfect venue for children and teens of all ages to come and learn about all types of important safety information. Huntington Park members were in charge of the pedestrian safety booth. A few of our members were enthusiastic cars racing on a chalk drawn track to simulate busy traffic while two members were crossing guards. It was nice to see young children learning the importance of obeying the "stop" and "go" signs. Entire families were having fun and crossing the road safely as well. We had tons of fun going down the kraken and seeing all the attractions. Any time when the local Key Clubs come together is sure to be a fun time! Can't wait for the next event!

Warren High School’s Key Club, along with many other Key Clubs, has taken initiative and have become a part of the non-profit organization Project Happiness. March 20, 2015 was the International Day of Happiness. In order to celebrate such a joyous occasion, WHS Key Club had to do something spectacular. We decided to decorate our school hallways with streamers and posters in order to bring joy to our fellow peers and faculty. Many Key Clubbers answered our call to action and dedicated their afternoon on March 19, 2015 to decorate our halls. They did a spectacular job. The next day, our student’s reactions were all worth the time and effort. Many students came up to us and thanked us or asked us about our posters. Not only did we bring happiness to our peers, we also brought awareness for happiness. Many people did not even know that there was a Day of Happiness. I am happy to report that WHS Key Club had such an important role in bringing into awareness the importance of happiness to our school.

Submitted by: Kelly Rueda On April 10, Norwalk high school's Key Club went to feed the homeless at the Midnight Mission in Los Angeles. They volunteered from six to eight in the morning. Although it was a tiring mission for the key clubbers to do so early in the morning, they enjoyed every minute of it. Also, Norwalk Key Club has been helping another club named Millennium with recycling. Not only does the recycling help fundraise the club, but it is also environmental friendly. The recycling occurs on campus and anyone in the club, or out, is welcomed to join. The recycling that takes place on campus is approximately an hour of community service.

Submitted by: Jennie Vong For the month of March, Lakewood Key Club volunteered at the Arc Walk for Independence alongside Division 13 South. The event took place on March 21, 2015 where many of the walkers participated to walk either one or three miles around Stonewood Center in Downey. This walk was designed to raise funds for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Volunteers woke up early to help put up colorful banners to motivate walkers, set up the chairs, and blow up balloons. Many volunteers also walked either one or three miles to support individuals with disabilities and to show respect that they are beautiful in their own way. The outcome was a success as well as the participants in the walk who came out to support.

Submitted by: Jose Castillo This month, the new board members of the South Gate High School Key Club had the opportunity to attend the 69th Annual D-Con in Anaheim on the 13th, 14th and 15th of March. As we left the school, most board members already knew what to expect because it was their second term, while the other new board members did not. Upon arriving to our hotel, the board members settled in their room and went to the first sessions of the afternoon. Each board member headed their separate ways to attend the sessions that would best train them for their positions. Following this came the evening dinner, and the first general session of the evening, in which we were welcomed and began learning what the purpose of attending D-Con was, followed by a performance, and ending with chants and cheers. The following day, was filled with more sessions, and every person with a key club position was moving from room to room, like busy “Bees”. All the sessions were helpful in their own way, such as “Dealing with Personalities”. The 2015-2016 South Gate High School Key club This session helped our members understand that there Board Members would be people with different personalities such as an analytical, who focus on things going according to plan. Lunch gave us time to relax and it was then followed by a second general session, in which the new international board members were introduced and congratulated by all key clubbers. After we were dismissed, we headed to our last few sessions until dinner. Following dinner, was another general session, and afterward we headed to our rooms to prepare for the dance, which was the highlight of the night. Over all D-Con was a new experience for a few members, and a re-living experience for others. South Gate High school Key Club president was asked about what the environment was like at D-Con and responded with ”D-Con was full with people that gave a very energetic environment.”, a true statement, as D-Con was buzzing with energy, informative, and an enjoyable event the incoming Key Club board members of South Gate High School Key Club.

Helping the Community

Kiwanis One Day Bike N’ Roll Festival teens were able to help out on the organization of the community event. Many key clubbers in particular decided to help out with booths. Our fellow green monkeys decorated, organized and most of all helped out at safety booths. The Bike N” Roll festival took place in the parking lot of Downey High School. Many key clubbers had the opportunity to socialize and meet new people. Key clubbers from Division 13 were exemplary role models for children. In the booths, teens gave presentations on what kind of safety the booth focused on. The booths depicted great examples of rules for safety. Most of the teens were either presenting the ideas of a particular safety or gave children the opportunity to try the safety equip-

The booths consisted of many different types of general safety. In particular some booths focused on fire safety, dog safety, pool safety, and pedestrian safety. Of course, the main focus was on bike safety but all the types of safety were important. Our booth’s topic was pool safety. Myself and fellow key clubbers got the chance to present and demonstrate what pool safety was. For all of us this was a learning experience because we were able to learn so much from these children. Also, key clubbers were looked up to as well. Myself and my peers asked the children if they knew the rules regarding pool safety. Most kids were aware of the rules. Or task as key clubbers was to pop quiz them on 5 easy questions. Every kid was unique they all were able to answer the questions but some had different reactions. I really enjoyed observing the kids and their reactions were priceless. Some were shocked, serious or goofy. Anyways myself and my peers were privileged with the opportunity to educate these kids. It felt great because we shared the knowledge that our community has given us by giving it back to these children. Some were either shocked, serious, or goofy. As a key clubber I can say that we fulfilled our expectations. We helped out our community within our own will. Because we wanted to, not because we were forced to. This event helped me improve my social skills. Honestly I was nervous before the presentation. But I knew that part of giving back to the community isn’t always easy but can be done with perseverance and dedication. These children were excited, full of emotion and looked up to us. That made me feel proud. It was an indescribable feeling. It felt like the world made sense and our purpose on earth, was to be key clubbers and serve the community. This service event was very fun. As a club from John Glenn High School we put on our best behavior to represent our alma mater. At the same time we got to enjoy each others company while making new friends. The moment that made all the hard work worth it was at the end of each presentation. The kids had enormous smiles on their faces after trying on the life jackets. Some needed help so we did help them but eventually they all individually accomplished the tasks. Once they were done we praised, rewarded, and gave them a high five. It was an awesome experience getting the chance to help our community out and at the same time, have fun. We all supported each others as key clubbers do and accomplished our tasks.

The Arc Walk was held on the 21st of March at Stonewood Mall and hundreds of people showed up to support people with mental illnesses. There were different distances consisting of a 1 or 3 mile walk/run at different speeds. All around the path were inspirational posters that motivated us to complete the run. Runners were also handed water and music was played by the Doty Middle School Band when we were passing the Middle School. After completing the run, people were given food and went to encourage all the runners who were yet to complete the event. When the walk was finally over, volunteers helped take down everything from chairs to booths and helped stack them to make the worker’s job easier.

A few Key Clubbers participated at the Cypress Recreation Egg Hunt. They volunteered by helping with the egg hunt, face paint, and the various booths at the event. It was a successful day of volunteering. The Key Clubbers were able to help out with the activities and crafts. They interacted with little children and helped them with the aid they needed. The crafts included helping children color an Easter crowns and Easter eggs with dabbing painting tools.

Artesia High School Key Club participated at the Kiwanis One Day celebration for bicycle safety. Our key clubbers helped out children with bicycle safety so that they will always be aware of their surroundings. Kiwanis One Day provided an opportunity for children to experience bicycle safety with bikes and helmets provided. Key Clubbers also had the opportunity to bond with the younger side of community creating an image of responsibility for the children. We felt as if we were getting closer with the community. At the end of the day, kids were able to have fun learning bicycle safety as well as us having fun with volunteers and each other.

What’s ELIMINATE? The Eliminate Project was created to eliminate Maternal/ Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). The disease steals many lives of innocent babies and women each year. It is caught when women are not immunized and when unclean equipment are used. When an umbilical cord is cut with an unclean blade, deadly tetanus spores infect it, causing it to spread throughout the baby’s body. The effects of the disease are horrible. Newborns suffer painful convulsions and become extremely sensitive to light and touch. Kiwanis and UNICEF have joined forces to help eliminate MNT!

Solution? To prevent more cases of this disease, it does not cost much. Vaccines, syringes, safe transport and storage, education of communities, training of health workers and more are required. It costs roughly $1.80 to protect women and their future babies with just three vaccine doses!

What can you do? 1. Spread awareness and educate your club! 2. Plan your week 3. Educate and inform your audience 4. Make it happen! 5. Gather funds and donate it to: The Eliminate Project: Campaign Office Kiwanis International Foundation 3636 Woodview Trace Indianapolis, IN 46268 USA
