There are plenty of opportunities for you and your club to take action during this time. Thank you to all the historians for their efforts into submitting their articles and all you monkeys continuing to do service, especially during AP season. Reminder to the historians, please send in your articles every 10th of the month by 6 pm and attach a visual that displays service. Thank you, stay tuned!

Kiwanis Club Division 13 Lt. Governor Message

My name is Chien J. Wang and I am your Lt. Governor for Kiwanis Club Division 13 for 2014-2015. My year is half over and I can tell you it has been one of the most fulfilling times in my life. The pace is fast. The excitement level is through the roof. And I get to meet the most wonderful, service minded young people. It’s ironic that while in high school, I was never invited by anyone to join Key Club, yet I’m the Key Club advisor for Norwalk High School, Cerritos High School and Artesia High School. I have been a leader in everything I do post high school. So it’s never too late to develop yourself into a leader. In order to succeed in school or in life, you will need the same dedication you show in Key Club. You must approach the things that are important to you with passion and conviction. Sometimes it is not the smartest person who succeeds. Often times, it is the person who wants it more! Key Club participation is a great predictor for success in life. Join for the fun, the friends, the service projects that we all do together. In doing so, you are already laying down the foundation of success for life! I hope I get to meet many of you in my remaining months as your Lt. Governor. Please come up and say hello if you see me at various events.

Chien J. Wang Kiwanis Division 13 Lt. Governor

MEET LAKEWOOD’S PRESIDENT

Hey there! My name is Jasmine Nauta, and I am happy to say that I am Lakewood Key Club's president for this term! I have been in this club since the beginning of freshman year, with not a single clue of how big this organization is, or how spirited it would be. I am so excited to serve a wonderful club that has definitely made a difference in our world and community. Lakewood's new board and I will provide numerous opportunities that we hope will inspire a love for what Key Club does and we can do together! I hope to give back to the club an amazing experience to make friends and to serve others. By coming and working together throughout the year, we are going to make a difference in our home, school, and community. Let's make this a spirited year, and Gooo Woood! Each President will have a chance to have their own page. Check every month to see who will be featured!

April DCM For the month of April, DCM was held at Warren High’s library. Members came out as well as new officers of different schools. There were club recaps, introduction to the buddy system, and a service project! Since it was almost Eliminate Week, attendees worked on a service project where they made birthing mats. This was possible by members bringing recycled plastic bags where they were cut and then tied into a ball so they could be sent out. These birthing mats prevent pregnant mothers from coming in contact with dirt which is one of the ways to contract tetanus. After everyone finished their part, everyone made a big circle to play icebreakers such as “I love my neighbor who…”. Certificates such as Officer of the Month and Club of the Month were also given out!

Member of the Month

There's not much to say of course besides being ecstatic and grateful for such an award. Personally I like to contribute with ideas that are just... original. Far fetch some may say, it's all just in the moment. I'm honored that our Lieutenant Governor chose me and I'll make sure to prove my worth to her and to Division 13N.

Officer of the Month

Being our division's Officer of the Month made me feel proud of doing what I do for our club. This title really encouraged me to stay on my toes with anything Key Club related because it made me realize that what I do for our club really does make a difference. I now feel ultimately motivated to do bigger and better things with my school's club that will truly show our club's potential and that will put my skills as a leader to good use. In all, I am highly honored to have been chosen as officer of the month and I WILL make sure that I live up to that title for the rest if the year, along with the rest of my club!

Club of the Month

It was an honor being awarded Club of the Month. It was challenging to keep up with all the Key Club festivities and study for our AP test. We are constantly learning how to be a better club for Norwalk and we recently voted on a new Secretary because our former one moved schools. Being Club of the Month affected us in a very positive way and we want to continue to do our best and be great leaders. We are currently raising money for the Eliminate project and Relay for Life.

Submitted by: Jose Castillo South Gate High School Key Club participated in the Walk for Hunger on April 18, 2015, an event in which 8 miles are walked to raise awareness of hungry families in our communities. Along the way, we made stops at five churches which the Huntington Park Food Bank contributes to. The day began at Saint Mathias Church. Some people arriving early, others a bit late, but despite arrival time, we were all ready to begin the walk. While waiting for the walk to begin, we offered some snacks such as fruit and water; everything to have energy for the 8 mile walk. As a majority of the volunteers began to arrive, we were greeted by organizers of the event, and we began the walk. It was perfect weather, and we were all energetic while walking, shouting to honking cars, and waving our poster. When we arrived at our first stop in South Gate, we were greeted by a pastor, listened to a small speech, were offered more snacks for the road, were blessed with a prayer, and we then continued walking. During the walk, I had the opportunity to hold the leading banner for the walk along with the board members of the Huntington Park Key Club. As we continued, the weather got a lot hotter, and the sun beamed down on everyone, making most us hot and somewhat sweaty, but despite the heat all of us continued walking. Arriving at our second stop, most of us began to feel tired, but we were greeted happily and we left to complete our walk. Along the way multiple cars began to honk as a way of support, which seemed to give people more energy and excitement to continue walking. We continued, and as we walked towards our final stop, at Salt Lake Park in Huntington Park, some of us began to walk faster because they wanted to rest, and as we got closer, some even began to run to tents that were at the end where we were greeted with applauses and more snacks to replenish our energy. The walk was a successful event where multiple people participated. Everyone enjoyed themselves and some even gained a new experience with it.

Submitted by: Cindy Tenorio On April 1, 2015 Warren High School Key Club members gathered around at the Downey First Baptist Church for some Easter fun. Our members had the amazing opportunity to hide eggs for the 2014 Easter egg hunt. After the eggstravaganza, our members were able to look at the happy faces of the kids searching for the eggs full of treats! Our members had the best time hiding the eggs and seeing how happy the kids were running around hunting down the eggs. Warren High School Key Club looks forward to working with the Downey First Baptist Church again next year for the Easter Egg Hunt!

On April 18, 2015, Huntington Park Key Club participated in the Walk for Hunger. Members completed 8.2 miles to fight for hunger. It was an exhausting, but relieving experience. Our club raised $475 together, even the smallest things can make the biggest of change. Also, our club managed to collect and donate 83 cans. It was really great because South Gate Key Club participated as well and we got more familiar with them forming a close Green Monkey bond. Sharefest is a great organization that gathers volunteers to dedicate their time and talents to meet tangible needs at schools, churches, and much more. At Huntington Park Elementary they were organizing the school and decorating. We had a chance to label books not quite the best of category, but it helped out the teachers organize their books from least difficult to most difficult. It was really fun and we met a lot of parents that take notice in their children’s lives. They also thanked us for contributing to their children’s school. It felt good helping out.

Every Friday, The Huntington Park Key Club participates in the distribution of food at a local church. I try my best to go to as many of these events as I can. The past two weeks of the church distribution (the 8th and 1st) has seen an increase of people going for food. The members’ jobs are to distribute the food in even amounts to everyone who pass by. We are always very enthusiastic to help the church since it’s near our school, meaning that the people we are helping are neighbors and friends. The food distribution helps the families that pass by supplying them with sufficient amount of food for the week, which means quick action and a lot of member participation is required. On Saturday the 9th, our Key Club helped at a local shopping center to set up and facilitate a mother’s day event in which children were given supplies to make cards and plastic flowers for their mothers. The event was very fun since interaction with the children and their mothers was required, many of whom were excited for the event. Our jobs were to set up the event, give commands on how to make the flowers, facilitate the arts and crafts being done and to clean up the area once the event was over.. Many of the children we were helping got very creative with their creations. It was also great to know that the projects being done were going to be delivered as gifts to mothers for their special day on the 10th.

Submitted by: Alyssa Jarnetta Artesia High School Key Club members recently had a desire to help out around our school campus. Our key clubbers decided to help create a cleaner, "greener" atmosphere by going around campus and picking up trash. We also gave teachers the opportunity to have their classrooms cleaned. This activity was especially exciting for our green monkeys because it was a personal campus clean-up that helped us better our own school. Because we helped out our own school, we also got to experience the benefit and results of our service. It was also a nice event because it helped create a more secure bond between our members, our campus, our staff, and our students. In addition, in efforts to help Project Eliminate, our Artesia Green Monkeys helped create jars to distribute throughout the school in attempts to raise money for the fund. After Eliminate week, we are going to donate the money.

The Bubblefest was a 2 week event aimed at educating early elementary age kids through fun activities. Volunteers were placed in different areas to assist guests at the Discovery Cube. They answered any questions, held doors for people with strollers, and gave directions. Volunteers also helped man the various bubble related educational activities at stations, and made sure that the kids were safe and having a fun time. It was an overall exciting experience that kept us busy throughout our volunteer shifts.

Submitted by: Kelly Rueda This month, Norwalk high school's Key Club helped Millennium Club with their annual EcoRally. We set up a booth informing the guests about water conservation and the on-going drought in California. We set up a game and gave out prizes such as rubber duckies. We also helped the Art Club with their projects for their upcoming event: Artrageous. We helped make flowers for an elephant and plaster for a Russian doll.

Appreciating Nature’s Beauty At the Arbor day event on the corner of Taffy street and Gard Ave., teens were able to plant trees for the community, learn about trees and the ways we key clubbers can help the environment. Key Clubbers were able to learn about the various different kinds of trees. Some trees need less water than others. By knowing this factor we knew which trees to plant and not to plant. This also helped the drought situation in California. That way we can save water that doesn’t need to be wasted. My fellow peers were put into groups, they were put into a group with Norwalk High School’s avid club. With everyone’s teamwork 54 trees were planted in total.

Together we can all make a difference for our planet earth that provides us with many resources. We can all agree that helping is a great feeling. My fellow peers group planted 4 trees separately. Everyone was able to learn about how much work, dedication and sacrifice it takes to plant trees correctly. It might seem easy at first but it does take hard work to get the job done correctly. The group leader, a former community volunteer, let us know that for every tree they take out to use for paper, wood, etc., they plant two more trees. That way we can give back to earth for letting us borrow its resources.

Learning about Nature We learned so much about nature during Arbor day which was great. Being Key Clubbers, we’re always open to learning new things, helping out in any way we can and most importantly, making new memories through bonding. We learned that nature is simply amazing. At first we were given a demonstration on how to plant the different types of trees because they all require a different plantation. Then, we were placed in groups with little help to see if we had developed the skills on how to plant these trees. In the end, we were tested by our group leader to see if everything went smoothly and if the tree was planted correctly. Therefore the tree could nourish and grow. This event was a great experience where we all got to learn about trees, nature and each other. Helping is awesome.

Submitted by: Jennie Vong On April 12, 2015, Lakewood High Key Clubbers volunteered at the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House Walk for Kids at Shoreline Park. Participants walked around the Walkers Village which helped raise money and awareness for the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House. The walk provides housing, comfort, care, and support to sick children and their families that stay at the house with a common goal: to stay together when their child is receiving needed medical care. Our members gathered at 8:30 AM to get to their designated spot where they got to cheer on runners and walkers. With provided pom-poms and horns, they motivated participants and greeted them with enthusiastic chants, “SU-P-E-R, SUPERSTAR IS WHAT YOU ARE!”, “G-DOUBLE O-D, J-O -B, GOOD JOB!” including many more were chanted. It was nice to see participants enjoy themselves with their family and friends while passing by and smiling when they were cheered on.

Submitted by: Earl Dubongco Every month in Downey, there is a clean-up where volunteers from all over the city come together. Key Club, Kiwins, and Builders Club have been participating for quite some time now and have been a key part to keeping our hometown squeaky clean. It usually begins in the morning around 9 AM and ends at 10 AM. Each month a new location around the city is picked and volunteers come together to clean. At the end of each clean-up, there is also a raffle where someone has the chance to win one of five $25 gift cards. It is a great event where you can meet a bunch of new, friendly people and gain a new experience to learn what Key Club is all about. In addition, Downey Key Club has been collecting hygiene products for LA on Cloud 9 which is a non-profit organization that supplies the homeless, less fortunate, and their pets. We have recently opened up the donations to the whole school and partnering with other clubs on campus to get even more products. We have placed an ad in our daily announcements so we expect to have more donations come in. By the end of this year, we hope to be able to donate all we have saved up to those in need.
