Wooooohooo! School’s out and we have finished another great term of Key Club. Doesn’t mean we stop there! Let’s continue serving our communities. There are so many opportunities to do so just keep looking! Hopefully you all studied hard and aced your finals. It was a pleasure to meet some of you at May DCM and at OTC. Thank you those who made these first few months of my DLT term a great one. You historians have done a great job turning in articles! Members, continue to attend events so I can take pictures of your beautiful faces. Without all of you, there would be no newsletter. Also, thank you to those who attended my Historian workshop with D13S DNE Marawin Chheang at OTC. I hope you all take the information you learned and grow as a leader and maybe even take on a new role!

Summer .. Summer .. Summer!!! Summer is finally here monkeys! I hope you all ended the school year well and aced all those finals. We have a fun, jam-packed summer ahead of us. Thank you everyone for attending officer training conference. It took so many weeks to plan and we're glad everyone was able to enjoy it. I apologize for the line getting in, but to ensure your safety, it was for the best. Both teams put in so much work and effort so if you see a DLT member, presenter, or task coordinator; thank them for all their hard work! Being able to present was an honor and I can't wait for more joint events. We'll be looking into and planning one for the summer. Don't forget to sign up for the Lakewood Block Party on June 27th! This is a super fun event where I'll be working the 3:30-6:30 shift, so I hope to see you all there. Don't forget to have service events and projects throughout summer and start planning for the school year ahead. Talk to you soon, thank you monkeys for all that you do!

MEET NORWALK’S PRESIDENT

Hello my fellow green monkeys!! My name is Louanne Santos and I am proud to be Norwalk High's current president. I truly enjoy serving my club. I have an amazing cabinet that I LOVE working with. It would have been more difficult to accomplish the tasks we achieved without working together. We are currently working on our Relay for Life booth event on June 27th to 28th and slowly recruiting more members to our club. My cabinet and I are thrilled to plan service events and fundraisers for the next school year. We also plan on collaborating with our buddy school, John Glenn. I'm very excited to serve this year's term and being more active throughout this year. It is really our ambition to change the way our school perceives Key Club because we are definitely more than just a service club. Each President will have a chance to have their own page. Check every month to see who will be featured!

MAY DCM

May DCM was held at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, CA on May 30, 2015. Green Monkeys did their monthly club updates, and then enjoyed ice cream which was followed by an icebreaker. Members were separated into three groups by the color of balloon tied to their ankle. The goals included running against an opponent and eliminating other players. After, anyone was allowed to pie their fellow members, officers, and DLT with a donation of a dollar. D13N was able to raise $40 for the EliMiNaTe project. Awards were also distributed for monthly recognition which included South Gate Key Club for Club of the Month, Anfernee Abad from Artesia for Officer of the Month, and Christie Lee for Member of the Month. Thank you to those who attended. We hope you had a great time!

Officer Training Conference took place at Lakewood High School on June 13, 2015. Many Ninjas and Green Monkeys united to learn more about Key Club and officer positions while meeting new people. The day began as DCM for both divisions. After, members got to play Kahoot! where they were tested on how much they knew about Key Club and their own division. Attendees got to enjoy fried chicken, cole slaw, mac n’ cheese, and some ice cream for a donation of a dollar. OTC had three sessions. Workshops included Key Club 101, Recruiting and Retaining Members, and Preferred Charities and Fundraising. D13S LTG Angelica Roxas, D13N LTG Julie Trinh, and D19N LTG Carolyn Chang also acted out different scenarios which showed the importance of communication and medical forms. Thank you to everyone who attended. Hopefully you guys learned new things or were reminded of information, and will use it in the future with your club or your role in Key Club! Thank you Lakewood High School for letting us use the campus, Carolyn Chang for coming out to present, and our Kiwanis Advisors for always supporting us!

Monthly Recognition Club of the Month We thank you so much for this award and look forward to the upcoming school year ! Our club is slowly transitioning but with the help from fellow key clubbers and wonderful LTG we are excited for this school year. We would like to thank our amazing advisor as well for all the support. We look forward to working with everyone and bonding more this summer

South Gate Key Club Officer of the Month I am so thankful to receive such an outstanding award. I couldn't have done this without the members I serve and the board that I work with. Also to our current Lieutenant Governor Julie Trinh for always checking and helping out through the work my club put in. I will definitely keep the work up to serve and help more people throughout my term!

Anfernee Abad, Artesia Key Club Member of the Month I can't explain how grateful I feel for receiving this . I love Key Club and it's little things like this that remind me that what I'm doing through this club is allowing me to contribute to the community I live in. CLUB RECAP

Submitted by: Jose Castillo This month, our South Gate Key Club had the honor of attending our sister Key Club’s installation dinner. We welcomed the new board and bid a farewell to the old board which some of us had the pleasure of working with the previous year and wished them luck on their academic future as well as with their future service to their community. Those who attended from South Gate Key Club were: our advisor Mr. Putnum, President Ashley, Vice President Assistant Natalie, and Editor Jose. Arriving at the dinner we were happily welcomed and greeted by the incoming board. As we sat down at our table, we saw how much effort was put into the dinner. Admiring the ornaments on the tables and the decorations on the stage, we were excited to witness the welcoming of the new 2015-2016 Key Club board for Huntington Park. A few minutes into the installation, we had dinner. After, the former HP Key Club President greeted us and gave a brief speech. Then, awards were presented to the former members celebrating the hard work that they put throughout all their years of Key Club, and we wished them good luck on their path to success. The incoming board members were also presented awards for their hard work that they have put into their club, and we wishing them good luck as well as they will be taking over Key Club. Overall, it was honor to attend the HP installation and greeting a new board into service which will do a great job with key club and providing service to their community.

Downey High Key Clubbers participated in Relay for Life at Downey Adult School. The event was created to celebrate the lives of those who battled cancer. Also, people have the opportunity to interact with cancer survivors and learn how cancer has affected them. Here we raised money by hosting events that appealed to children such as finger painting and bean bag tosses. As we all know, raising money for cancer is extremely important in order to combat against such a horrid disease that has taken many lives. In conclusion, attending this event was a heartwarming experience for all the members that were able to attend. Also, our club participated in a clothing distribution event which was an amazing experience simply because it was unique and different. During this event, members were able to help give out clothes to the less privileged. We were extremely excited to attend this event because it was new to our club. Luckily, it was successful and our members that attended were happy with their service. After this, we are glad to say that we will be helping out with this groups; usual food banks that happen every Thursday.

Submitted by: Bethany Nguyen Warren High School kicked off this month with our very first annual banquet! Many members were recognized for their hard work and dedication throughout the year with awards such as most hours, most spirited, servants heart award, and so much more. It was a bittersweet moment as we then said goodbye to our seniors and the old board, wishing them the best on all their future endeavors. Passing down the key, we installed the new board for the 2015- 2016 term. Our first ever banquet was definitely a success, everyone had a great time! Good luck to the new board as you all achieve the goals you have set for the club, but most of all, have fun! This past month, we held our Installation dinner where the upcoming board was installed and the old board retired. We also presented our wonderful Key Clubbers with their rewards and thanked them for their commitment and hard work. Also, every FriSubmitted day of each month, we hold a food distribution where we distribute foods to those in our community who need a simple meal each day. Sometimes we even get chocolates as a thank you from the local church and do not forget Relay for Life a very important event that involves time, commitment, and a Key Clubber’s love for service. We are so close to reaching our goal which is $700! We are on our pursuit to surpass it. We are currently planning a Shakey’s Night (whom which you guys are all invited), a yard sale, a few bake sales, and much more.

Submitted by: Kelly Rueda For this past month, Norwalk Key Club participated in Operation Beautiful. The goal of Operation Beautiful is to end negative self talk. Key Clubbers wrote positive messages on sticky notes and stuck them on the school’s bulletin board. We hope that these messages brought confidence and positivity to those who read them. Also, Norwalk Key Club raised $180 for the Eliminate Project by selling fresh fruit cups that were available to everyone at school such as staff and students.

Submitted by: Nikita Advani Shoot for a Cure is a 3 on 3 Basketball tournament done in order to raise money for the leukemia and lymphoma society. With 16 regular teams,4 advanced teams and 6 courts we were on a tight schedule to play all the games! Volunteers worked as scorekeepers, referees, or helped tally the wins! The event was spirited and everyone was rooting and watching for their team to win! Even when teams lost, they still stayed to support their opponents and watch the excitement amongst the crowd and during the games. With over $400 raised, overall it was a spirited and exciting event that brought basketball players from our school together to play for a good cause!

Beach cleanup is a service event that we encourage our Artesia Keyclubbers to join in. Last beach clean up occurred in Seal Beach on May 16th from the early morning for everyone to enjoy! After giving Seal Beach a cleaner look, our monkeys had a bonding session in order to know each other better. Beach clean up is a great way to connect with the world and people that care for the environment to be a bit better for everyone!

On May 29, 2015, Lakewood Key Club volunteered at Mark Twain Elementary. Twain Day is an end of the year celebration for all of the students, staff, and Twain families to enjoy. There was free food distributed, music provided to lighten the mood, and an unforgettable time with the volunteers. Volunteers worked at game booths that were set up for many students to play. Many activities included, “Ring a Bottle”, “Duck Pond”, “7/11”, “Can Knockdown”, and “Ball and Bottle Toss”. Volunteers repeatedly reset each game for the next kid in line to play and gave out treats such as candies, pencils, and toys for their winnings.

Raising Funds for Eliminate

Hard Work Pays Off

Creating Memories

During this month we didn’t have many service events going on. As students, we have all been really busy trying to finish the semester with fabulous grades. Regardless, we still managed to host a service event at our school, John Glenn High School. We discussed about possible ideas that we all had in mind as a club. Our first idea was to come up with something fun that everyone could enjoy. Originally, our possibilities consisted of a pie in the face and duct taping someone to the wall. As a club, we were all really excited because we knew that we would enjoy these events and so would everyone else. For some reason we were not able to do the pie in the face but that did not discourage us. We went with our second option and decided to do it. In the end, the event was for a great cause which was fundraising for Eliminate. As Key Clubbers, we proudly took this event on and made it possible with our perseverance and dedication. We stuck to one of our main skills as a club which is teamwork. We made sure to promote the event as much as we could by making flyers, posting around the school, and announcing the event on social media. Even though we waited to last minute because of the lack of time, the results were amazing. We made more than what we expected to make. All of the proceeds go to “Eliminate” which is a cause that supports maternal neonatal tetanus that is supported by Key Club internationally. As a club, we achieved our goal and were content with the events’ amazing results.

As Key Club members, we all had a job. All of us individually performed a different task. We worked hard to plan the event and get approved by the school. Our original idea of duct taping people to the wall, for fundraising purposes didn’t get approved by the school. We were a bit dispirited at first but then we realized that the idea was not safe. So we revamped our original idea and came up with “Duct taping someone to a chair”. We all worked hard to plan the event and make it happen. Without my fellow Key Clubbers, this event would not have been possible. They were very hard working and on top of everything. I made sure to stay in contact with them just in case they needed any help acquiring the supplies, but they had it all under control. My amazing spirit coordinator got in contact with our amazing drama teacher, Mr. McLoy, and let him know what was going on and what the purpose of the event was. He replied to us with a smile and helped us incredibly. He volunteered and brought a lot of attention to the event with his warmhumorous spirit. Without him, this event would not have been possible either. He even told us that we could borrow some of his tape if we ran out of our own. He helped bring people to the event and showed how much fun it can be duct taping someone to a chair. In the end, JGHS students had a lot of fun duct taping the volunteers meanwhile at the same time helping Eliminate through donations. Students were allowed to choose any kind of tape that they liked by donating $1 for a strip of tape. The event resulted in success and the hard work definitely paid off. W we were all very satisfied and content that we were able to accomplish our goals.

As a club, we are tremendously proud. This event helped us grow and to get to know each other better than before. Even though we worked really hard into getting everything organized, the result showed us it was worth all the hard work. Students were having fun duct taping Mr. McLoy, Emily, and Jonathan. From the looks of my fellow Key Clubbers, I can tell that we had a great time. The event was a success and we hope to host it again next year. Therefore more people can see what Key Club is about and how fun it can be to be a member. We all worked hard, but we also have lots of fun. Furthermore, creating everlasting memories. During this month we did not have as many events as we have had in the past. Because of that we have been searching for service events around our community. We have searched in the Norwalk library and have gotten in contact with the activities director. There are many events that will be going on and that we will be a part of. Serving our purpose of community service and the importance behind it, we are all very excited and cannot wait to announce the events that will be coming up in the future! Many of them will take place in the Norwalk city during the summer. These events will be a fun and great experience so that we can grow as a club.
