VINCENT’S LETTER A monthly message from your Lieutenant Governor What’s splashing D04E? I hope everyone has been staying safe and healthy throughout quarantine. Make sure to continue to keep in touch with your family and friends, especially through this pandemic. Although goldfish supposedly have short-term memory, please continue to always remember how hard the people around you are working to make this place an even happier place. Even yourself! Give yourself a pat on the back or a day off sometimes. I am so proud of your continued efforts in promoting and attending the various division events that our Division Leadership Team has been working hard on throughout quarantine. Without your service and attendance, Key Club would be nothing. Always remember your importance! In recent times, I would like to address the current situation regarding the movement surrounding Black Lives Matters. As I wrote in the recent Division Instagram Post, I want to assure you that our Division will continue to support these movements and the overall fight against racism. Key Clubbers have always supported and demonstrated the core values of inclusiveness and caring. In doing so, we want to make sure that our black friends, family, and acquaintances are also cared for. During these pressing movements in history, we must fight together and pave the path for a brighter future. Make sure to donate, stay educated, and fight for these important movements! As I said at Conclave, “we’re gonna make history!”

LET’S CHANGE AMERICA FOR THE BETTER. TOGETHER.

In terms of upcoming events, make sure you look out for a Beach Boomba alternative during the summer and other fundraisers! Our DLT has been making various service events for you to continue supporting our division. Take full advantage of these events while you have more time on your hands. Stay Strong! Serving the most GOLDEN division, Vincent Vu

AMBER’S LETTER A monthly message from your Division News Editor Hi everyone! It’s your DNE. School’s finally over, and it surprisingly went by a lot quicker than I expected. I didn’t even realize when the last week of school was until it was actually the last week of school! Good job to everyone surviving and adapting to the new changes that came with quarantining, especially those dreaded AP exams; however with the current quarantining, we are unfortunately unable to do as many events as we want. Even though we are limited, it does not mean we have to stop what we are doing as a division and what we do within our home clubs! I hope that many of you are putting your creative minds to work and thinking of ways to keep getting involved and being active.

“ ”

JUST KEEP SWIMMING.

Just like Dory had said in Finding Nemo, let’s all continue swimming and do our best to continue to serve our community! Moving on, this past month, Division 4 East has held a few events which were ones that I was able to attend. They were so much fun! Please take a look at the next slides to see what we have been doing, and please look forward to more events soon! Stay safe and healthy, Amber Dang

MAY DCM By: Jolyn Le | Villa Park

Despite the hectic schedule that online learning has been placing on students, many were able to make it to the virtual May DCM! The meeting was held on May 27, 2020 and lasted around thirty minutes. Having a virtual call was incredibly fun to see all the friendly faces that joined. We discussed exciting news and it was truly great to see people from all over the Division. Many new board members and club members who may have joined into the meeting, including me, got to witness their first DCM.

First off, the Lieutenant Governor discussed the new Division Leadership Team! There were so many bright and amazing students that earned their new roles in the DLT. The Zoom meeting also included announcements of the upcoming, potential service events like Freerice! Finally, the T-shirt design for this next school year was released and although it is sad to see the previous one go, the 20202021 design was beautifully drawn as well.

7

The Division Club Meeting ended at 3:30 PM, but most participants in the call stayed for the service project as well! The service project was to create a thank you card, digitally or hand drawn, to the first responders and healthcare workers. Though the experience for the meeting over a Zoom call was different and new, the event was one to remember!

FREERICE SERVICE EVENT By: Jolyn Le | Villa Park

From time to time, who doesn’t want to play some trivia games? Especially when you can earn service hours for it. A division service event that was introduced this month was definitely entertaining for many of those that participated. To participate, you must download a free app called Freerice! Anyone can play and earn 10 grains of rice (points) per correct answer, with the best part being to earn service hours and help the World Food Programme! The categories to choose from are diverse in topics and it takes little time out of your day to learn something new. The game is quite addicting and a great game for the time to pass by as everyone is trying to social distance as best as they can. Some surprising facts I’ve learned are words like ‘sapience’ means wisdom and the capital of Norway is Oslo. Slowly, global hunger could be diminished with the help of everyone and using Freerice is an easy way to start. It takes simply 30 minutes per day to earn a hundreds or even thousands of grains of rice. Although the limit amount of hours to receive service hours is 5 hours, many members continued to utilize Freerice in fighting global hunger. As of June 7th, 2020, the Villa Park Key Club group in total has earned 91,820 grains of rice. A great amount of time and dedication was put out to donate grains of rice. It is quite impressive to see how much progress and impact one high school Key Club has created in a short amount of time!

CLUB RECAPS CRANES FOR A CURE Diego Sahagun | Foothill For our Cranes for a Cure event that occurred on June 10th, members were to create many origami cranes as a basis of a goal to reach 1000 cranes, the event being based on the Japanese legend. Each member got together on a discord meeting to learn and create multiple cranes. They would also record the number of hours it took to make their cranes on a Google form.

COVID-19 ARTICLE SERVICE EVENT Canyon An important goal that we have at Canyon Key Club is to really advocate the safety precautions that were instilled to keep us safe from the current virus. We asked our members to discuss the question below in order to show others that despite the other movements that are occurring simultaneously, this pandemic is something that is still happening, and it continues to affect us as of right now.

How has this current pandemic affected you and others around you, and what can we do as a community to uphold safety precautions? “This pandemic affected me extremely at first and for my family as well. It was very unexpected that everything closed including the place that we go to everyday, the school and gym. We had to adapt to it and I'd say right now, we do not mind staying at home, but still really miss being able to go out to all the other places without worrying. We were able to pick up some new skills and hobbies which is the benefit that we did not make time for before, but now are able to. I assume other students have adapted to online school and remote learning which might happen for the incoming school year. As a community, I believe that we must make it mandatory to wear face mask, not just a one layer thin cloth to cover the mouth and nose, but an actual face mask. Many of us still should be quarantined and follow social distancing in my opinion.” ― Brooke Nguyen (senior) “The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many challenges both to me and my family. We were never expecting this to come and affect us in such a big way. It has caused me to change and adjust to the new normal for quite some time. I have to now do classes online where I do not learn as effectively, do my own track practices at home, and have to FaceTime my friends which isn’t the same as talking to them in person. These things have all impacted me and my family in a negative way but I know that as a result of this we will be stronger people and be more aware of sanitation. We have been washing our hands more often, wiping and spraying things down, and just paying more attention to the small details that we may have looked over before the pandemic. By now, my family and I have adjusted to this new way of living and continue to follow CDC guidelines (social distancing, face masks, etc.). Overall, this world wide pandemic has made a huge impact on all of us but I know that in the end we will all learn and be even better people.” ― Ben Nguyen (sophomore)

GOLDFISH OF THE MONTH School:

FOOTHILL “This month, Foothill Key Club has expressed dedication and hard work in their weekly tasks. They have constructed different service project ideas such as Cranes for a Cure, as well as attending all of the events. They show a lot of enthusiasm and their board has done an excellent job in making the home club a fun and energetic atmosphere. After watching their bulletin editor work, I can see that they have solid communication skills amongst one another and finish their tasks on time, if not already early. I am proud of their hard work and I can’t wait to see where they take the club this term!” ― Lieutenant Governor Vincent Vu

Officer:

KATELYN KIM (OSCA) “Being the first introduced to her through her DLT interview, I could see that although shy, she demonstrated an eagerness to grow and learn. As a club secretary, she continues to work hard and is constantly revising anything that she can, so that she is able to display only her best work. Her work with the MRF is unremarkably integral to the success of her home club, and I see a bright future ahead of her within her Key Club journey. As an EA, she is growing to speak more and be more confident in her own abilities. I am super proud of her progress and can’t wait to see more from her.” ― Lieutenant Governor Vincent Vu

12

Member:

SOPHIA CHUN (OSCA) “As a member, Sophia has been instrumental in shaping her home club. She is always doing her best to communicate and help me with it comes to any DLT task. Sophia is constantly demonstrating excellence in her daily tasks, and I know that she’ll continue to serve her home, school, and community to her upmost ability.”

― Lieutenant Governor Vincent Vu

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
