ADVERTISING SALES JOURNALISM IS AN INTERESTING thing and you are never quite sure what you’ll write about next
or how it will go until a story catches your eye and suddenly a light bulb goes off and you are off and running on the keyboard. For this issue, I stumbled on a peculiar story that centers on a man, his love for sailing, and a particular fondness for puffins. I spoke with Paul Heiny, a UK writer, and sailor who documents his adventures in good-humored books for other boaters but also for the boating illiterate. In his most recent book, “Farewell Mr. Puffin,” Heiny documents his journey with a good sense of humor and an honest portrayal of his mistakes and victories as he navigates new waters to the freezing north and Iceland. As this is the last magazine for 2021, I wanted to share a story that would catch your imagination and your sense of adventure. Sea will be back in 2022 with a new set of stories, boats, and journeys to share with all of you. Thank you for reading, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and I look forward to seeing you in 2022. As always please feel free to reach out to me at seaeditor@goboating.com or at jdarling@ goboating.com. Cheers! Jordan Darling

The forward master cabin optional layout offers access to the large foredeck area—a design solution usually found on much larger luxury yachts. All layouts have the option of an aft crew quarters. The first two options allow for a full-beam midship master stateroom, a premium offering for a yacht of this size. In the day area, close attention is paid to ergonomics and the use of space. The large lateral windows provide an impressive amount of natural light and expansive views. The well-appointed galley, located near the stern, provides a seamless transition to the aft cockpit thanks to the complete absence of steps—creating a single space for both indoor and outdoor living. The large hydraulic swim platform, spacious foredeck lounge area, hot water deck shower, and abundant storage, add to the list of comforts.

SOUND SYSTEMS THIS IS A BIT convoluted, so bear with me. The end is worth it. When we did the office floors, all the computer stuff got put on the dining room table for a couple of weeks with all the other office stuff. I believe the computers must have been getting it on in the middle of the night as when we had all the new furniture assembled and ready to have the stuff put back, my cables and other equipment looked pretty frazzled, while ML’s were just where she put them in color/biographical/identifiable order in a box. Mind you, I followed orders as to where she wanted things to be put. This included new extension cords and breaker extensions. Once everything was set up, and there were no wires left over, I started tie strapping everything nice and neat. You must be aware that I was doing this on my back, using one hand, so if you looked at it, you’d say “Pretty damned good!”,
but not “WOW!”She wanted “WOW!” so The Short One scooted under the desk, proceeded to pull stuff apart, removed breaker extensions that were too long, replaced them with shorter ones, and tried to remember how the OMC tie straps worked. I had many thoughts, ALL best kept to myself, which I did, as I meandered out to the shed to rearrange the full beer bottles for quick access. It wasn’t long before I was beckoned. “My speakers don’t work.” “Did they work before you took everything apart?” “Remember I told you they sounded funny?” “Oh, absolutely! Did you tell me 10 minutes ago? Everything is a blur before that.” “Wiseass.” “Okay, let me try.” “No, I’ll show you.”

“Do you want me to help--or not?” “Okay, go ahead.” I sat down at her desk and checked the volume via the screen. I was able to go from 0-100 and mute. The screen speakers worked okay. I checked the computer driver. It was set for speakers, not headphones. All okay. Power was on at the auxiliary speakers according to the little green light, but nothing emanated from them or the boom-box speaker under the desk. I went to my computer and checked my speakers by going to Google and typing in boat engine sounds and logging on to a 1000HP drag racer. No question: my speakers worked finnnnnnnnnnnnne!!!!!! All 5:2 in the screen, two small ones, one boom-box. I checked the wiring: one small speaker attached to the desktop via USB; one small wire from it to the other small speaker, and a large wire to the boombox. I looked at her setup: one wire from the screen to the computer, one wire from one small speaker to the other speaker, and one large one to the boombox. I said, “The problem is you are missing the input to the small speakers which power the boombox.” “What did you do with the wire?” “If you took it all apart, and you put everything in a box, then perhaps YOU should tell me what YOU did with the wire.” Note to self: if you have the right to keep silent, do it. So, we went up to the attic and found the green wire that carried power from the desktop to the boombox and small speakers (her small speakers didn’t have the extra wire that mine do, and as far as I know, her small speakers and boombox have NEVER worked) and I plugged it into the desktop, which I could easily reach. The boombox, I couldn’t, so she went under the desk to plug the other end into the boombox as I went to Google, logged onto boat engine sounds, clicked on the one with the 1000HP drag racers, turned on the small speakers, and told her to plug in the boombox, whose volume adjustments--base and treble--we’d never looked at. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination, but I can tell you that last night and today when I say something, she gives me a blank look before saying “Huh? Did you say something?” At least she lost her hearing listening to something choice.

Schmitt & Ongaro Primus Wheel The Primus is made using unified investment casting, the solid 13-1/2” or 15-1/2” wide 316L stainless steel wheel exceeds ABYC P-22 and ISO 8848 standards. It is available in polished or powder-coated black stainless steel and in three-spoke configurations: solid, open slots or with decorative UV-resistant black Santoprene™ inserts. The latter option extends above and below the spokes for vibration reduction and a bespoke appearance. All spoke versions have slightly chamfered edges for a safe, comfortable feel. Standard on the powdercoated models, a popular optional enhancement to the stainless steel Primus is the Control Knob. rine, so it won’t leave a residue nor damage surfaces. It’s safe for use on fiberglass, paint, vinyl, plastic, carpeting, and wood, as well as sailcloth, canvas, and most other fabrics. Moldaway powerfully eliminates mold, mildew, and algae. It’s equally effective on dirt, blood, and stains from food and beverages. A powdered formula, Moldaway becomes active when mixed with warm water. Its ratio is two tablespoons per quart of water. The surface to which Moldaway is applied should be cool and the solution allowed to stand wet for 10 minutes, or longer for stubborn stains. Then, it’s rinsed. The mixture stays active for up to 10 hours to help tackle big projects. A 22 oz. container costs $14.98. Moldaway is available at https://shurhold. com/.

Bio-Based Metal Polish Many metal polishes use harsh acids and substances that are hazardous to the environment. Bio-based Metal Polish from Iosso is different. A USDA Certified Biobased product, it’s safe to use around water and other sensitive ecosystems—not to mention people with chemical sensitivities, children, and pets. Made in the USA, Bio-based Metal Polish meets the stringent requirements of the California Air Resources Board (CARB). While safe to use, the formula is powerful. It quickly removes oxidation, tarnish, surface rust, and water spots from stainless steel, chrome, aluminum, brass, bronze, and copper. It’s perfect for cleaning heat bluing off chromed exhaust pipes. Not just for metal, this versatile product also eliminates black marks on porcelain, as well as road tar and oil from Plexiglas, hard plastic, and painted surfaces. Bio-based
Metal Polish is concentrated and contains no silicone or carnauba waxes. Using it is simple. A small amount of the creamy paste is rubbed onto the surface with a soft cloth then buffed off by hand or machine. Along with restoring the metal to a high shine, it leaves a protective coating that lasts for months. A one-pound container of Iosso Bio-based Metal Polish costs $25; five pounds is $90. SmartPlug On a vessel, 50 amps are enough to power to run a microwave or A/C unit. It’s also more than enough power to melt the housing of a traditional twist-type marine shore power connector and inlet. The revolutionary SmartPlug cord set overcomes the inadequacies of this old technology to deliver a safer, simpler, and more secure 50A 125/250V electric supply. Unlike twist-type connectors with their thin corrosion-prone blades, the SmartPlug uses a robust pin and clip design that provides over 27 times the metal-to-metal contact. This lessens electrical resistance and reduces the potential for arcing and overheating. It is the safest shore power cord set on the market today.SmartPlug 50A cord sets are available in 25’ and 50’ lengths. Prices start at $730.50. Versions in 16A, 30A, and 32A configurations are also available. If the boat is not already equipped with a SmartPlug inlet, users can purchase an upgrade kit with an inlet and connector. The inlet is available in stainless steel, black, white, or gray to match any boat décor. Superior IP56-rated gaskets ensure a watertight seal. SmartPlug is available online at https:// smartplug.com/.

MEXICO REPORT
By CAPT. PAT RAINS
Map of Mexico showing fast & slow routes, holiday stops, airports.
HOT FOR THE HOLIDAY’S ITINERARY AS WE WEST COAST boaters prepare to depart our home ports along
the chilly northern Pacific, I suggest a robust Mexico cruising itinerary. Let’s call it “Hot for the Holidays.” For your southbound escape during November, December, and January, this itinerary is ideal for eight-knot powerboats with longer legs (ample fuel tankage). Pack away your foul-weather gear Santa, because quick as a wink this holiday itinerary gets you and your elves down south into those 85-degree tropics.
HOT for the Holidays We’re going to dash down Baja, zoom across to the mainland, and continue coasting south as quickly as possible until making 12 SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021
a big U-turn at Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa. There we begin slowly gunk-holing our way back northwest while working on our tans in bathing-suit weather. Why so far south, so fast? Because parts of the Sea of Cortez are colder in winter than most first-time cruisers (and their guests) expect. Screaming Blue Northers can keep all boats pegged down for days on end. We’ll initially bypass Los Cabos and La Paz, but we’ll stop there after water temperatures warm up. How fast? This hot-paced 8-knot itinerary gets you from Ensenada non-stop to Los Cabos in four days, then across and down to Ixtapa in three more days. If you plan to depart the U.S. about Nov. 10 –
Ixtapa is an excellent place to stop, make a U-turn to begin holiday cruising north. Marina Ixtapa has fuel and a haul-out yard, while nearby Zihuatanejo is a legendary cruising stop. (Pat Rains photo)
Barra de Navidad (Christmas Bar) makes a pleasant holiday landfall thanks to Marina Isla Navidad, Grand Bay resort, two lagoon anchorages, and the funky beach town known as “Barra.” (Pat Rains photo)
Isla Ixtapa is uninhabited, just a few beach cantinas within swimming distance in this north cove. (Pat Rains photo)
Las Hadas Marina at Manzanillo is fantastic, a great alternative to Barra, if the ‘21-22 Panama Posse headquarters have scooped up all the slips. Manzanillo has about eight separate anchorages along the bay’s north shore. (Pat Rains photo)
15, you can defrost that stateside turkey in time for a Thanksgiving feast with tequila gravy by the holiday. However, start making your marina reservations now.
ITINERARY Ensenada Entry: At 60 n.m. south of San Diego, get your boat and crew swiftly cleared into Mexico during a two-day stop at Ensenada at the handy CIS port-clearance office. Boaters will find one fuel dock, three marinas, two boat yards, and ample banks, cell-phone stores, and provisioning opportunities. Soak it up Santa, because Ensenada offers the last yacht services you’ll see for about 850 n.m. Now hook up your reindeer and make all speed southeast for your “dash down Baja.” Turtle Bay: Scoot non-stop down the blustery Pacific coast of the Baja California, Norte to arrive at tiny Turtle Bay, about 320 n.m. from Ensenada. Turtle Bay provides the region’s only reliable all-weather overnight anchorage, and it’s so remote that it has no port officials, just a tall pier where you can top off with diesel. However, Turtle Bay is an optional stop. If you’re carrying ample fuel and enough crew to rotate watches safely, you might opt to zoom on by. Don’t worry about missing anything here right now, because later, when you have to dash back north, you’ll see way more of this rather dreary coastline than you might wish for. Santa Maria Bay: About 235 n.m. down the coast, if you only need an overnight rest stop, consider undeveloped Bahia Santa Maria just north of Magdalena Bay. The easy in and out anchorage spreads across the north end of the bay. No fuel or water here, just
a rest stop in prevailing northwest winds. Stop ‘n Go at Cabo: What!? Not hang out at legendary Cabo San Lucas? Nope. The intrepid holiday voyager will glide quietly into the outer anchorage, drop the hook for a good night’s sleep and be ready to depart after the morning weather reports. You do want a good weather window to scoot 360 n.m. southeast and make landfall off the mainland near Barra de Navidad. Cross to Navidad: From Cabo San Lucas we head southeast, heading about 127-degrees for 360 n.m. At an average of eight knots, this crossing should take about 45 hours. During our last 85 n.m. we’ll gradually close with the craggy coast. We’ll make landfall at 19°11.657’N, 105°50.091’W, or about 1.5 n.m. offshore of a bold detached rock pinnacle called Cabeza Navidad. If you departed Cabo San Lucas at 10:00 a.m. on a Monday, you should arrive here about sunrise on Wednesday. Barra de Navidad: About 10 n.m. east is the small resort of Barra de Navidad, or Christmas Bar. December 2 through 7 about 100 cruising boats with the Panama Posse will fill this port for their southbound seminars and kick-off party. So, now might be a good opportunity to fuel up and unwind in a full-service slip at elegant Marina Puerto Isla Navidad, or drop the hook in the port’s two lagoons. “Barra” is an excellent place to pick up fly-in guests at nearby Manzanillo airport. Coastal Point Hop: It’s only 200 n.m. down to Ixtapa, so let’s SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021 13

run this coast non-stop by staying about 1.75 to 3.75 n.m. off these points of land: Punta Campos (Manzanillo), Cabeza Negra, Punta San Telmo, Punta Piedras Blancas, Punta Lizardo, Bufadero Bluff (Caleta de Campos), Punta Manglar (Puerto Lazaro Cardenas) and Punta Tracones. U-Turn at Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo: Finally, let’s relax here for the first holiday in a long season. Marina Ixtapa has 600 slips to 160’ LOA, a 90’ end-tie fuel dock, a 100-ton sling lift, chandlers, groceries, spas, boutique shops, an 18-hole golf course, and nice condos. Ixtapa’s beach hotel zone was built in 1975, while the marina was carved out of a jungle lagoon. At least one crocodile still haunts the marina docks, so keep Fido safe. Although this marina generates year-round world-class sportfishing tournaments, it caters to power and sailboat cruisers from November to April. Zihuatanejo Bay lies only seven miles southeast by boat is a world apart in ambiance. No marina, but five small coves line this one-mile enclosed bay backed by steep jungle hills. Just past the striped municipal pier, you’ll find Playa Principal anchorage, the port captain and Navy office, and most of the historic fishing town. City buses whisk us back to Marina Ixtapa. Thanksgiving: Don’t count on buying a decent fresh turkey down here; it’s a uniquely American holiday. Before leaving home, we bought frozen turkey breasts and legs, packed them in a cooler with dry ice. When ready, thaw slowly and marinate them in a mango tequila sauce. Roast or grill your T-bird on deck or the dock on November 25. U.S. expats traditionally gather to share their gratitude and sea stories. Start North? If we want to spend winter holidays on the Gold Coast or Costa Alegre, Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta are good choices. To get an early start cruising back north let’s anchor overnight at uninhabited Isla Ixtapa. With a weather report of flat conditions to get us 70 n.m. up the coast, we’ll lay a course for Caleta de Campos, say 8.75 hours. Caleta de Campos: Anchor in the NW half of this pretty halfmoon bay to gain shelter NW of the flat breakwater and easiest access to the coco palm-studded dinghy beach. Stairs go to the pleasant town (also called Bufadero Bluff) atop the hill. Ask a panguero guide to show you the Cara de Nixon on the rocky shore. 14 SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021
Any excuse for a potluck: Thanksgiving and the December holidays find ex-pat boaters gathering to share good food and Mexico sea stories. (Pat Rains photo)
Cabeza Negra 65 n.m. (8.25 hours) up the coast is a black, double-sided headland with a beach anchorage on both sides. Locals said the name refers to a black bull with stubby horns; each beach has a reef to avoid on approach. The north side is usually calmer for overnighting off the small coco-palm beach. Manzanillo Bay 45 n.m. (5.75 hours) up the coast could occupy an active family for a month: fairytale Moorish architecture wows guests at Marina Las Hadas, but so do eight anchorages, beach cantinas, diving reefs, sailfish fishing, lagoon kayaking, shopping, provisioning, charming historic town, and the international airport to drop off or pick up guests. Famous Gold Coast stops northbound are Barra de Navidad, Melaque, Tenacatita, Careyes, and Chamela Bay before we round Cabo Corrientes. Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay: So vast are the amenities that 2,000 boats berth year-round: four marinas, two boat yards, two fuel docks, and gorgeous Puerto Vallarta all gracing the bay’s 20-mile north shore. Daytime temps are 75 to 85-degrees in December, January, and February. Get off the boat in PV for cultural adventures like the Chocolate Workshop, Art Walk, Jungle Zip Line, or Tequila Factory tour. Lower Sea of Cortez Circuit: Now that you’ve caught up with warmer weather, I suggest you make this counter-clockwise circuit Puerto Vallarta, north to Guayabitos, Chacala, San Blas, Isla Isabela, Mazatlan, Altata, and the marina at Topolobampo. Here you can take a train up through the Copper Canyon. Then cross 115 n.m. to Puerto Escondido’s fine marina and begin cruising south via Agua Verde, Los Gatos, Evaristo, Isla San Jose, and the Espiritu Santos Islands to end at La Paz. May the spirit of joyous holidays guide your course this winter.

A SENSE OF
Adventure Curiosity AND A DOSE OF
BY JOR DA N B . DA R LING

Paul Heiny Photo
URIOSITY OFTEN DRIVES us to the most fasci-
nating of places and on some of the grandest adventures.
For one man it drove him to the arctic waters of Iceland in a Victoria 38 sailboat in search of answers to satisfy his curiosity about the volcanic island to the north and to see some peculiar seabirds along the way. Paul Heiny is a sailor and well-known broadcaster and writer out the United Kingdom who turns his sailing adventures into digestible novels for sailors and non-sailors alike. In his most recent book, “Farewell Mr. Puffin” Heiny documents his travels from the east coast of England to the crisp northern waters of Iceland and the lack of the peculiar puffin that is so native to colder northern waters. Heiny began his journey in his coastal village on the east coast of England where he stumbled across a set of documents from the 12th and 13th centuries recording a trade route that saw roughly 150 boats running the coast of England up to Iceland and back each year. “I thought crikey in the 1200s 1300s how the hell were they navigating and it suddenly came me it’s not that difficult,” said Heiny. “Because none of the hops, if you go from England to Scotland to the Orkney Islands to the Faroe Islands to Iceland, none of the hops are more than 200 miles so you know you’re only 36, 46, 48, hours out of sight of land really. Because Orkney is very high, Scotland is very high, Faroes are very high, and Iceland is very high if you had a compass you would be hard-pressed to miss them. So, I thought that was very interesting and that is the route that I took. The route these 12th and 13th-century boats would have taken.” Iceland is a Nordic island nation defined by its dramatic landscape that is littered with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, and lava fields. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean just outside of the Arctic Circle it is home to an estimated population of 400,000 and has become a bit of a tourist attraction in recent years with experts forecasting 700,000 tourists will visit the island by the end of 2021. Heiny found it rather curious that the island had become such a tourist destination and drawn to colder climes and a desire for a new adventure packed up his sailboat to head north. 22 SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021

“There are two things that inspired the journey really,” said Heiny. “Iceland is a peculiar place as in over the last ten years or so there has been the most incredible tourist boom...So first I was just curious because from where I live on the east coast of England it is not a million miles to get to Iceland but I was very curious to see what all the fuss was about… The other reason I wanted to go is that if you are sailing from the south coast of England once you get to Lands End where Britain ends so to speak before you hit the Atlantic Ocean you have a choice to make you either turn left and that takes you south to warmer waters and eventually towards the equator. If you turn right you end up going to northern climes it is not all that far from there to the Arctic circle and I have always been drawn to the rather bleaker and somewhat colder places than I have to the hotspots.” Heiny also found that he would draw inspiration from his fondness for the particularly strange and socially isolated puffin. A peculiar bird, the puffin has a small black and white body with tightly packed feathers, allowing them to survive in colder climes and a colorful beak. The bird spends their winters at sea and only comes onto land to mate, where they meet up with their partner who they will keep their entire adult lives. They are rather popular on the west coast of Europe and particularly in Iceland. The puffin’s numbers have taken a dramatic decline inspiring Heiny to center his book partially on the puffin’s lifestyle and its connection to the sea. Heiny made the journey south around Cape Horn a few years ago in an 18,000mile journey, documented in his book “One Wild Song”, after making the trek south in the stifling heat he found the journey into crisper northern waters refreshing but not without its challenges. “The technical aspect of sailing up in Iceland is that you have to be fairly self-sufficient in your boat,” said Heiny. “It is a highly civilized place but it doesn’t do yachts it doesn’t understand sailboats.” With a lack of marinas and other amenities for cruising in Iceland, boaters need to have a sense of self-sufficiency. Heiny did say that if a boater was having engine troubles they could probably find what they are looking for and someone to fix it but other than that you will need to do things on your own. Heiny also recommends that sailors have good respect for the colder climate. Leaving Grimsey Island on the north coast Heiny
and his crew were surprised when the wind shifted and they were hit with winds that carried an arctic chill. “We thought well it is just a normal rather cool day back home,” said Heiny. “But after about an hour or so of this we felt like we were getting a deeper kind of cold somehow it got right through to our bones and we suddenly realized hang on a minute this could easily be the early stages of hypothermia.” Heiny and his crew pulled into harbor quite late at night in the rain and although survived the wind chill they were reminded how easily they could have been caught on the wrong side. Follow Heiny and his crew on their journey north in his book “Farewell Mr. Puffin.” The book has been declared a love letter to puffins and northern climes like Iceland with a good undertone of humor. “There are several themes to this book on is the place themselves how event though they are separate islands quite a way a part they do have links,” said Heiney. “But what is really important in the sailing books that I write is that I am always very honest about what goes on.”

THE PORT OF SAN DIEGO SECURES FUNDING FOR EEL GRASS RESEARCH
2020 San Diego Bay Eelgrass Inventory Update
The funding will be used to study eelgrass carbon sequestration in forty different parts of San Diego Bay.
SAN DIEGO — The Por t of San Diego recently secured $150,000 in funding from the United States Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration META program to study eelgrass carbon sequestration in San Diego Bay. The cooperative one-year agreement will take a look at how eelgrass stores carbon and how it can support the efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. “Eelgrass is an extremely important habitat in San Diego Bay it is kind of the base of the food chain,” said Eileen Maher director of environmental conservation and aquaculture blue technology program.“...It is a native habitat throughout the northern hemisphere it is definitely the base of the food chain but also helps with clean water quality...we are studying it now because of the potential to sequester carbon out of the atmosphere which helps reduce greenhouse gases.” San Diego Bay supports 17 percent of all eelgrass in the state and half the eelgrass found in Southern California, current literature suggests the eelgrass can hold up to four times more carbon than terrestrial plants, making it a huge benefit to the atmosphere and the future of mitigating carbon emissions in the port, according to Maher. The study will take core samples from 30

roughly forty locations in the bay in both Navy and Port property taking into account the different habitats available in the bay. “We are going to be taking core samples,” said Maher. “...And we are going to be looking at aspects of these core samples so we will look at depth which carbon is being absorbed based on the depth of the sediment we are looking at how much carbon is absorbed in the eelgrass roots and how much carbon is absorbed by the eelgrass plant itself, and we are going to be looking at different areas like north bay because there is deeper water different water from South bay and taking that into account for our study.” Maher said that the initial agreement with the MARAD was for $500,000 but with the first installment of $150,000 the Port is hoping to establish a baseline and then continue to go back over time to do additional testing and establish an accurate record over time. Maher said that the project fits in well with other established Blue Economy Incu-
bator Projects like ECOoncrete, which installed a series of interlocking tide pools in January of this year using an environmentally sensitive low carbon concrete mixture tailored for the San Diego Bay marine environment and serves as a potential replacement for riprap. “This melds right into our incubator projects,” said Maher. “...We are looking at projects that have a lot of multiple co-benefits, our projects like ECOncrete, where we are able to show that if we can take out the hard surface structure and replace it with still a hard structure but mimic the tide pool it brings in different animals and different muscles and algae. It is providing that environmental benefit.. and so if the eelgrass project is sequestering a lot more carbon than we think it might be which would be great and it will help us limit our emissions in the bay.” To learn more about the Port of San Diego Bay’s Blue Economy Incubator program see https://www.portofsandiego.org/ waterfront-development/blue-economy.

OCEANSIDE HARBOR UNANIMOUSLY TURNS DOWN PUBLIC SAFETY MODEL PROPOSAL
The proposal for the new model would include the fire department and lifeguard staff and require the harbor to hire a private company for nighttime security.
The current Police Departmentbased model for Harbor public safety was implemented in 2009 and costs the harbor $2.5 million yearly. By: JORDAN B. DARLING OCEANSIDE — On Sept. 9 the Oceanside Harbor and Beaches Advisory Committee 32 SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021
met for a special meeting to hear the staff recommendation for the Harbor Public Safety Service Model, where they unanimously voted against the draft and sent city staff back to the drawing board. In Aug. 2020 city staff assembled an informal working group of Harbor stakeholders, that included staff from various city departments, two current members of the Harbor and Beaches Advisory Committee, and two Harbor stakeholders. The group met three times to discuss options
and presented their original findings at the March, 15 meeting. The proposal was presented then presented to the public by Jonathon Borrego the deputy city manager for the city of Oceanside at the Sept. 9 meeting. The proposal included: 16-hour dedicated water and landside lifeguard coverage from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and a minimum of two lifeguards including a boat operator and rescue swimmer on 16 hours shifts this included a staff change by adding a lieu-

tenant and two sergeants; 24-hour fire and paramedic coverage that would extend beyond the harbor into a larger coastal area between the harbor and Oceanside Boulevard, west of the I-5, the cost would be split between the city and harbor; water rescue duties between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. would be provided by a firefighter/boat operator assigned to the coastal squad and a lifeguard rescue swimmer that would be assigned to overnight call back duty; the police department would be provided in the same manner as the rest of the city on a call by call basis with the cost falling on the harbor via its annual lease payments; the Harbor District would be responsible
for hiring a private security service to provide overnight security duties including parking lot patrols, restroom checks, and dock checks. The proposed project would cost approximately $3.4 million and about $900,000 of the costs would be absorbed by the City’s General fund resulting in an estimated $2.56 million direct cost to the Harbor District, about $60,000 more than the Harbor’s current public safety budget. To offset the proposal recommends bringing the Harbor District’s annual lease payment up to current market rates. During the meeting, several members of the public spoke about the plan to raise the lease to current market rates and raised concerns about the similarity between the situation in Oceanside and the one in Dana Point, which is currently undergoing a slip rate increase that has several boaters concerned about losing their slips. Many boaters and the committee questioned the term current market rates and what the rates would be based on. Oceanside is a smaller harbor than the surrounding harbors with an annual median income of $72,697 in 2019 compared to Dana Point at $99,409 and Newport Beach at $127,223. Boaters then questioned why the harbor was responsible for paying for police and fire services that would cover places outside the harbor, Borrego said that because the harbor is considered a special district and has historically paid for these services. Borrego also said that the harbor is the only special district in Oceanside. In the end, the council voted to unanimously turn down the proposal and sent staff back to the drawing board with a couple of requests, that they look into previous public safety models, including models that included a harbormaster, explore an option to independently outsource, and consider what is best and most cost-effective for the harbor. The Harbor and Beaches Advisory Committee will meet again on Oct. 18 for its regularly scheduled meeting.

WAR HEROES ON THE WATER WELCOMES VETS ON OCT. 1
The WHOW closing Ceremony at Avalon includes the participating yachts gathering for a symbolic flyover paying tribute to all our veterans
War Heroes on the Water will host 100 veterans on 37 donated yachts for two full days of sport fishing near Catalina. By: JORDAN B. DARLING NEWPORT BEACH — War Heroes on the
Water will host their annual charity fishing tournament benefitting wounded war veterans and the non-profit Freedom Alliance the first weekend of October. The annual event is in its fourth year and has reached a new milestone by supporting 34 SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021
100 veterans from around the country to attend the event and will include an all-female boat for the first time. The grass-roots tournament got its start in 2018 when Founder Anthony Hsieh decided to create the event based on his experience fishing with veterans in Cabo San Lucas. The trip made a lasting impression on Hsieh from the admirable attitude of the veterans to the healing effect being out on the water had for them. “He knows how wonderful this country is he knows how great it is and he knows why it is,” said Rod Halperin, an organizer for War Heroes on the Water. “He appreciates these brave young men and women
that put themselves in harm’s way to protect our freedoms...He said you know what I want to host these guys… he saw that it made a difference to these guys.” In 2018 the organization hosted the first tournament off of Catalina with 12 boats and 27 vets out on the water and the event has continued to flourish since. The event starts with a small reception on Friday night as the veterans, found through Freedom Alliance, arrive for the event. They are given the opportunity to get to know one another and bond a bit before being out on the water. Saturday the heroes receive a warm welcome from guests at a welcoming party in
The 2021 event will kick off with a performance of the National Anthem and color guard salute to the flag. Tournament yachts and supporters gather around in anticipation of the performance
Newport Beach at Hsieh’s home before they board their assigned yacht and head out on the water for the sportfishing tournament that starts directly at 12 a.m. on Sunday. “When we say War Heroes on the Water, we don’t joke around about the on the water part and that is still the case,” said Halperin. Vets will stay aboard the yachts from Saturday afternoon until a closing ceremony in front of Avalon, which includes a fly-over of World War Two planes and a small celebration on the Avalon’s pier where anglers can weigh in their catches and enjoy a night in Avalon. Tuesday evening will conclude the event with an awards ceremony at the Newport Country Club, where anglers will receive awards based on categories like type of catch and weight. Halperin said that the event allows veterans to step away from the day-to-day struggles and challenges to enjoy the time out on the water bonding with the new and old friends and shows them that they are supported and appreciated. “It has always been a very poignant moment particularly this year with the situation that is going on with the military vets that have served in Afghanistan they are having a tough time so this is really good for that,” said Halperin. War Heroes on the Water and Freedom Alliance team up each year to provide this event free of charge to veterans. Freedom Alliance provides the hard funds to run the event but War Heroes on the Water tries to get the majority of things donated or at a lower cost, from items for a silent auction that raise money for Freedom Alliance to the yachts that are lent out for the veterans to use. “They pay out anything we need, the hard cost to operate this event the airline tickets we have you know hotel rooms to stay for the vets we do some catering things like that but we do our best to get everything donated or at cost or reduced,” said Halperin. “...Everybody is kind enough to provide advertising and other publications like that and if everyone just kind of pitches in to lower the cost so that every four dollars we bring in goes directly to Freedom Alliance and to support their services.” Aside from the team-up event with War Heroes on the Water, Freedom Alliance is a non-profit support group that provides services to veterans in need, whether it is financial support when they are struggling or outdoor events like the tournament. Part of this event is raising money for Freedom Alliance and the veterans they support, the goal this year was to raise $1 million and not only has the goal been reached but War Heroes on the
WHOW yacht crews work hard to put their vets on the fish. This group had a busy day full of tuna and dorado.
Water plans to surpass it. “We are going to host 100 vets,” said Halperin. “We know there are 1,000s that could use the support that is why we are trying to raise so much money for Freedom Alliance so they can reach out beyond those 100.” Events like this rely on community support and War Heroes on the Water is encouraging community members to come out and support the veterans during the Oct. 2 boat parade on Linda Isle in Newport Beach. Halperin encourages community members to bring their American flags and come on their dinghies, boats, or just stand on the pier to wave the veterans off. CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION FUNDS PORT OF HUENEME’S ZERO EMISSION BLUEPRINT
The Port of Hueneme’s stevedoring companies currently have three hybrid cranes which are zero-emission cargo handling equipment to further the Port’s zero-emission initiatives.
Over the course of the next couple of years, the Port will analyze data to quantify the types, uses, and volumes of clean energy fuels needed to operate the Port. By: JORDAN B. DARLING PORT OF HUENEME — On Aug. 24 the Port of Hueneme announced that they had received $200,000 in grant funding from the California Energy Commission’s 36 SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021
Clean Transportation Program for the port’s blueprint project “Sustainable Power Advancement and Resiliency for our Community.” “The DDT dumpsite was two days out of 11 at sea and all the rest of the days we were on mineral-rich hard grounds,” said Chief Scientist Dr. Lisa Levin, a professor of biological oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “There were rocks we were interested in because they are covered with ferromanganese crusts and phosphates and minerals...We want to understand what animals and microbes live in these systems so that should the envi-
ronments change, we will be able to track changes.” Levin and her team explored nine locations along Southern California’s borderland and were up to 150 miles offshore, dives took place on seamounts and sea knolls which are submerged mountains and hills, underwater escarpments, or steep underwater cliffs, and the DDT dumpsite. The scientists collected samples using a remotely operated vehicle that was tethered to the ship. The vehicle was sent down in the morning and spent seven to eight hours a day collecting rocks, water, sediment, and other samples before returning to the ship.
Levin and her team explored mineral-rich hard grounds which lead them to discover a whale fall and a new methane seep along California’s coast. According to Levin, the expedition was a baseline study to look at these areas and create a better understanding of the sea life that calls rock-hard grounds home and hopefully be able to track changes later on. “We are doing what is called a baseline study,” said Levin. “We are looking at what lives there how many kinds of organisms how diverse they are and whether they have an affinity with the substrate with the surface that they are on.” During the expedition, scientists discovered two new environments in the California borderlands, a whale fall and a methane seep. These environments foster unique communities on the ocean floor, a whale fall is where a whale carcass comes to rest on the seafloor and often provides food for scavengers but the whale also releases chemicals that can fuel a community that relies on chemical synthesis the same way a methane seep would. “They represent reducing environments,” said Levin. “They are a different kind of ecosystem on the seafloor the methane seep has animals that are getting their energy and food from chemical energy chemosynthesis rather than photosynthesis. That’s of interest, and the whale fall also because when the whale decays it produces
chemicals, hydrogen sulfite, in particular, that can fuel the same kind of community as a methane seep or thermal vent so they are little patchy environments that are actually turning out to be pretty common on the California margin.” Levin said that it could take a year to two years to solidify the findings and publish but that the general impression is that California’s borderland is diverse and full of life. “They’re kind of general but the initial impression is that the borderland is a very diverse system with every single site we visited had different species,” said Levin. “We call it heterogeneity you know there is a lot of differences, minor differences in the habitats that shape different animal communities.” Levin and her team have gathered the data to gain a baseline of the ocean and continue to track changes over time, whether it is from climate change, human exploitation or even wind power offshore. “I think you know the average person doesn’t care too much about the deep ocean but it is vulnerable to change from human activities,” said Levin. “We’ve been using the expression exploration before exploitation this cruise was a good example of that exploring our own backyard and new things trying to do things before we’ve damaged it.” The data is being returned to Scripps for further analysis.

THE WORLD-RENOWNED SQUADRON. REIMAGINED. When redesigning the Squadron 68, we took inspiration from the past. What made the Squadron range such a winning formula the world over, was behind every design consideration. The result? A masterclass in intelligence and restraint. With subtle exterior styling updates and a new interior layout using materials that make it achingly beautiful. It really was no surprise that the Squadron 68 was awarded ‘Best Interior Design’ at the World Yacht Trophies in 2019 – a re-design that has taken the interior to the next level.
