FASHION TEXTILE DESIGN

Fashion Textile Design BA (Hons) is a specialised course that empowers students to explore new and innovative creative directions in fashion. Our programme has a proven track record of enabling students to overcome challenges and deliver exceptional work with the support of our dedicated academic and technical staff. Through this program, students have developed adaptable and expressive methods, embracing craft processes, repurposing waste materials, and finding new combinations of traditional production methods and design thinking. Our students have remained true to their unique design identity and demonstrate an increasingly sustainable design approach.

As the fashion and textile industry undergoes significant change to become more responsible, our students are leading the way with thoughtful, tenacious, and creative responses that drive progress. Their outcomes showcase their ability to adjust, redefine, and focus on the creative journey’s most important part – the process of creating.

Our final year students are incredibly talented and innovative, and their ability to adapt to change is a testament to their ingenuity. We wish them every success in their future endeavors and hope that they continue to believe in themselves as they embark on their careers.

Practice Before Theory:

“The aim of such study is to develop - through experienceby trial and error - an eye for colour. It reverses this order and places practice before theory, which after all, is the conclusion of practice” - Josef Albers

PROJECT:

What remains:

Clinging to the treasures did nothing to stop the inevitable as they sank, and with them her body was pulled down. Amidst the chaos, the girl’s descent had gone unnoticed, and below the waves emerged a silent sanctuary. As one chest drifted deeper into the dark abyss, the pressure of the water began to mount, and the lid creaked open. Treasure dusted the sea floor and left nothing but a trail of ghostly fabric in its wake. Her body lay entombed on a frozen throne of gold and silks, hand still gripping a string of pearls.

TJ MAHESH PROJECT:

The Way of Voyage:

To me, this means the long journey of my 3 years of work. My project is based on the Avatar films and the concept of tribal community. I am visualising my ideas through macrame and hand crafted construction. Using my research I am integrating cut deadstock fabrics, wooden beads and cowrie shells. I am further complimenting this by incorporating geometric patterns inspired by tribal decoration.

PROJECT:

Retro Futurism:

“The past gives us templates for surviving the present and creating better futures”. Retro futurism is a concept of external, desperate optimism. For my final major I wanted to embody my own romanticised almost childlike vision of retro futurism and what it stands for. Providing an antidote for uncertainty and embodying ideas of freedom, liberation and creativity.

Artisanal Heritage:

“Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations,” - UNESCO. Celebrating the integration of heritage crafts into contemporary design, emphasising the value of quality and longevity. As an artisanal designer, I utilize skills such as machine knitting and crochet to create designs that incorporate elements of leather, drawing inspiration from protected heritage sites across the UK. My work raises awareness about endangered crafts and their cultural significance, paying tribute to their enduring legacy, inspiring future generations to continue to value and preserve these invaluable treasures.

ISABEL BIRD PROJECT:

Contamination:

The fashion industry is driving a new era of colonialism, Waste Colonialism. The project explores the impact on third world countries and the environment the industry has had through the process of contamination. The contamination of surplus waste, microplastics and hazardous dyes. Waste created in production and by overconsumption of the West is discarded in landfill and in markets causing many negative environmental and social impacts. The contamination has spread across the world and calls for immediate change within the industry, deconditioned.

JESSICA HOPSON PROJECT:

Metropolitan Birmingham: Street Style:

My Final Major Project has been inspired by the changing skyline of Birmingham city centre, which has recently been broadcast on an international stage due to it being the host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The skyline in the city centre is dominated by buildings spanning from the Victorian era to the current ultra-modern architecture. I have used this inspiration to create abstract and linear forms when experimenting with screen printing and fabric manipulation. My final collection reflects modern metropolitan Birmingham with its gender-neutral street style.

SHARELLE HARPER

SHARELLE HARPER PROJECT:

jOURney:

My Jamaican heritage was the inspiration for this project. ‘Out of Many One People’ is Jamaica’s national motto, it reflects the diversity of the Jamaican population, past and present. Jamaican heritage is a vibrant fusion of African, European, and Indigenous cultures, which has given rise to a unique fashion aesthetic that celebrates bold colours, intricate patterns, and a fearless sense of style. Growing up in the UK, I’ve seen the contrast between Western fashion and traditional fashion, so my vision was to bring life to Western fashion with colour and patterns in a contemporary, fresh, and expressive way.

PROJECT:

Does my hoop look big in this?

This collection explores sinuous lines and ornate decoration. The influence for this project stems from personal interests, intellectual curiosity and the desire to challenge the norms of the female form through creative distortion.

HANNAH SMITH

PROJECT:

Subverted Glamour:

My collection draws inspiration from the façade of glamour that films such as Vertigo, Gilda and Rear Window portray. I explored the luxurious, unattainable characters that these films project along with the destruction and ruin underneath. I aimed to develop and present this through a mix of fabric construction, colour, materials, and texture choices.
