nc packs4 patriots Support Our Local Heroes

Many people have asked how they can send care packages or letters to deploying #Soldiers. A few years ago, the Department of Defense made the decision to stop using military assets to ship letters and care packages to deployed Soldiers. In keeping with this guidance, Fort Bragg cannot receive care packages and/or letters to forward on to our deployed forces. However, we are blessed to have two major organizations that can assist if you wish to support our troops, the USO of North Photo above: Our Troops love the crafted greeting cards from the Crystal Coast ladies! Carolina and NCPacks4Patriots. The USO has a long relationship with Fort Bragg. In 1941, Fayetteville was home to the first USO outside of Washington DC. The #USO of NC has a center in Fort Bragg’s Maj. Gen. William C. Lee Soldiers Support Center, where they provide a wide variety of services to more than 400 Service members daily. The USO of NC is accepting in-kind donations that can be given to service members as they leave for a deployment. Examples of needed donations include hygiene items such as deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste, baby wipes, energy drinks, snacks, etc. Unfortunately, the USO does not have the capability to send letters and care packages to service members overseas. The point of contact is (910) 495-1438 or via email at: pcannon@uso-nc.org. NCPacks4Patriots is a volunteer non-profit organization based in the Eastern NC cross-roads town of Ayden. They have been supporting our deployed troops with care packages since 2005. Their packages contain hygiene items, snacks, recreational items and letters from grateful Americans. During this past holiday season they sent more than 900 packages to deployed forces. All items and postage for their operations come from donations. Point of contact for NCPacks4Patriots is Barbara Whitehead, (252) 714-1175, email: ncp4p@yahoo.com.

This historic structure, one of NC’s two remaining covered bridges, was built in 1911 at a cost of $40. The bridge is 54 feet in length and crosses the West Fork Branch of the Little River within the Uwharrie National Forest and is a direct connection to the county’s past mode of transportation, when horse and wagon were common and automobile travel was in its infancy.

Livin' The Life WILLIE G. BUYS TWO TICKETS Cleveland Hunt Rocky Mount, NC The picture to the right was taken at Myrtle Beach Bike Rally back in May of 2006. At that time I was with the Rocky Mount HOG Chapter #3550. I was working the HOG Chapter booth from 8am-10am selling raffle tickets for a 2006 Softail HD motorcycle to benefit the Rocky Mount Chapter Toy Run. About 9:30am that morning I noticed a group of people walking around inside the show. A South Carolina T.V. news crew was there filming the event. Willie G. Davidson and Nancy, his wife, stopped by our booth. I explained to Nancy about the toy run. At that time Nancy told Willie G. to buy two tickets. Willie G. did and wrote down only his cell phone number and the name, Wille G. No address was given. The HOG Chapter group didn’t believe me when I told them what had happened until I showed them the tickets and the picture.

The Bullw Chro

By: Bob Seymour Well it’s Easter Sunday and I missed the deadline for getting an article to Debbie again. I want to apologize to her and thank her for the grace she has always given me when I exceed the deadline. I’ve missed a few deadlines over the time I’ve been contributing to Behind Barz but it’s usually been because I was busy or on the road somewhere and this month I was not only busy I got really sick with some kind of flu crap and have been in bed most of the week… Riding season for most of the country is just kicking off, temperatures are starting to rise as the sun grows higher in the sky and the daylight hours increase incrementally day by day. Spring is in full swing in the southern states and it is just beginning to show signs of hope for riders here in Colorado and most of the rest of the northern parts of the country. Most bikers I know out here ignore the weather unless it’s really severe and hazardous and they ride all winter. The brothers and sisters out here are a unique and generous bunch of riders who have been much closer to me than family. Ever since I first came out here 6 years ago they have shown kindness to me in more ways than I have room to write about in one article. The latest expression of their commitment to a brother in need came to me in the form of a round trip plane ticket to Atlanta Georgia so I didn’t have to ride all the way back to make what I thought was a routine Doctor’s appointment and visit with one of my son’s family.

14

“I am Than

I don’t want to give the impression that Colorado bikers are the only people who have helped me stay on the road because the support I’ve been given has literally come from around the world. From Washington to New York and from Minnesota to New Mexico people from every walk of life have blessed me beyond my wildest dreams. They’ve bought tires, oil changes, wheels, a Mustang seat and backrest and they have supported me in a thousand other ways as well. I am so thankful and incredibly blessed to have met the best of the best people America has to offer. I wish I could name them all and give credit where credit is due but there are multiple thousands of them. The pictures are just a few of the people who have supported the ministry I try to do and some people I met only because of the support they have given over the last 7 years of being a homeless old scooter tramp… To all who have been a part of my journey I want to say thank you and may God bless you abundantly.

the good newz! Rodger Duvall ~ Jesus Freak Thee Redeemed House biker Church

”Motorcycle Awareness Month” The Month of May is ”Motorcycle awareness month” by getting the word out in a message “to be watchful of Motorcycles” on the roads. During the winter months it is vary rare to see a lot of motorcycles on the road. I remember a story my Mom told me about a time she was riding in the passenger seat of my Grandpa’s car. She said her dad asked her if any cars were coming from her direction at an intersection they were stopped at. She answered no there were no cars coming, so my Grandpa pulled out in front of a TRUCK! ...and almost got t-boned! He asked her “I thought you said there were no cars coming”? She answered, “You only asked about cars you didn’t say anything about trucks!” lol. At intersections, as drivers and passengers, we need to focus on what to be looking out for and how to be watchful of any signs of a possible event...to prevent having a mishap as we travel to our destination.

Having insight (discernment) to the events happening around us as Christians comes from an abiding relationship with Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Through The Holy Spirit as comforter in John 14:26 Jesus says “But the comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” ... Be watchful, recognize the growth of more traffic and MOTORCYCLES on the roads as Spring sprouts into warmer weather. Remember to look for oncoming cars ,trucks, MOTORCYCLES, scooters, and bicyclists and people. One more thing, whatever you do wherever go, and whatever you think, “Think on these things” “Be watchful and remember Jesus is coming back, and be ready to see Him at the intersection of the four corners of this world!“ You’ll recognize Him, because you will be like Him! ...and you’ll see Him as He is in Glory with All His Holy Angels and says “Come ye blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world!” Now lets ride for Christ and bless God by dieing to be self just like Jesus.

Love , Jesus Freak Rodger.

Lisa Pearson aka "Boots" from Raleigh, NC

Chix on 66 Lisa Pearson AKA "Boots" hails from New York City but now lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. She has been riding motorcycles for 8 years, now and she owns a 2005 HD Dyna Lowrider named, “Roxyy”. How were you chosen to be a part of this ride? Well, this isn’t an event for new riders or even Weekend Warriors. I knew they were looking for seasoned riders and confirmation that they could handle being on the road for that long. So, I applied and shared my many miles of experience and adventures I’ve already had. I guess my love of riding and wanderlust came through, as well. What are you looking forward to the most about this ride? I’m looking forward to doing my first long distance ride, and the new friendships that come with it. But most of all I’m excited about all the unexpected things that you never plan for but always happen. They make the best stories! How are you preparing for this ride? Lists, lists and more lists! My lists have lists!!! I’m doing research and getting packing tips, learning good exercises to do on the road to avoid stiff, sore muscles, and deciding which sights are top priority for photo ops. I’m also getting Roxyy ready, too - she got new tires, handlebars and brake pads. Plus, I’m double-checking cables and tightening everything that twists, etc. We’ll both be in tiptop shape come June. Has this been a dream or bucket list item of yours? Actually, my bucket list is infinite! It has everything on it - big and small. But this is certainly something that is an epic opportunity and one that I just couldn’t pass up. Who is your inspiration? My inspiration for this trip is mom and her sister, my Aunt Mary. They taught me about being strong and independent, and making life fun for myself as well as others around me. I want to teach these things to my daughters and what better way than to lead by example. If her eyesight was better Aunt Mary would be riding right beside me!

JUNE 10-25, 2022 This will be a 15-day journey through the heartland of America, on Route 66 – the “Mother Road.” Lisa will be starting June 10th in Milwaukee, WI., at the Harley-Davidson Museum and her journey will be ending in Santa Monica, CA. She will be traveling through Illinois, Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona! She will get to stay in iconic hotels and motels, see the historic, one-of-a-kind sites along the route, traverse small-town America on her motorcycle, and share her daily experiences with 40 other like-minded women riders. This will be the adventure of a lifetime! ...and Lisa will be sharing it with us in a future issue!!!

From The Mind of Hello My Happy People!

Maybe it’s just the nature of things, but it seems that the biker community has slowed down a bit. The bikers I knew once before are not out riding no more. Is it just me? I know that even on my side of the road. I’ve not gotten my bike out as much as I used to. Not that I don’t want to ride. There’s just so much going on around the house. For five years I was on the graveyard shift. So my home, yard, and my shop have been on the back burner. Here lately they have been my focus. Between that and doing things with my family. My older kids are moving on with their lives. One graduated last year and now she’s doing college classes and working a job and my oldest boy is trying to get his driver’s license. He’s looking at one more year and he will be graduating. My two younger children are homeschooling and moving along with that very well. So yeah, life is good, but busy. I’ve been looking at bikes ‘cause I was hoping to sell my Nightster and upgrade this year, but it’s not going to happen. With the prices of everything going up we decided to hold up this year. We live off my one check and making another payment to something is just something we want to hold off at the moment. Joe Biden has this country turnt upside down and everyone can see it but his supporters HAHAHA! I’m not going to get all political on this one this time, but trust me, I can go there and go there quickly! No, I would just rather focus on what’s ahead right now. I got a small yearly bump at work but with this inflation screaming at 8% and it’s still going up, that little bump was like a bug hitting the head light at 80 mph. So, we’ve cranked down on spending money, and I’m just going to put Mr.Road King off ‘til next year.

Big Ed aka 2Timer

34

No worries though, right? We will keep on keeping on. My bike hasn’t let me down so far and it can keep on sending me through the breeze. So, I’m not crying. I’ve had this Harley nearly 9 years. She’s an ‘08, 1200 Nightster and even though I’m definitely ready for a bigger bike, she’s been a good ol girl. She’s not had really any issues. She had an oil leak once but a couple of new gaskets and that was the end of that. When I bought this bike I bought it off one of my brothers from the Club. He was sure to let me know, it wasn’t a Honda. He told me, that I was going to have to keep a eye on the nuts and bolts.

Facebook.com/BehindBarzMag

Big Ed... Well y’all, I’ve had my eye on them, but it’s not been nothing more then changing the clutches four years ago. I’ve also had to get some work done because a header bolt broke off. Other than that, she’s been one solid ride. A cat once dug its claws in my seat which caused it to make a few holes but one of my brothers at the club hooked me up with another seat. So yeah, no problem. I don’t know why people pick on these sporties. I’ve seen more problems with the bigger bikes then I have with a 1200, but to each is his own. I’m ready for a bigger bike not because I don’t like my sporty. I’m just ready to be comfortable and also I don’t want to have to stop for gas every 80 miles. It’s hard to really knock out some miles when you have to stop for gas every time you pull back the throttle and hold it for 30 minutes. She’s been a good girl, but I’m just ready to go big. I want an Road King. I’ve been looking at them pretty heavy here lately. I mean, I know it’s going to be next year before I get it, but there’s nothing wrong with looking and day dreaming, right? Plus, I like to dig into information before I jump off into anything. I know folks who have no problem with plenty of cash can switch out motorcycles like they do their underwear, but this ol’ boy is a pay check to pay check kinda of guy and there’s a whole family depending on that one check each week. So, I got to be careful. One bad move with a different bike and if it’s a lemon I could be facing not being able to be one with the breeze. If you know what I mean. But I also give it to God. The right bike will be in my future and I’m sure it’s a blessing when I get it. Well folks, that’s my spill on this black and white this time. I hope to see y’all on the road and I hope the biker community starts kicking up some dust and blasting out those tail pipes. I know the season has just started but I’m ready to hear that thunder. So until then, I will see you Behind Barz.. Big Ed / 2 Timer

Livin' The Life PIZZA FRIENDS story & photos: Sheri Sandoval 200 NC Miles, Delicious Food, & Ice Cream! Our little group is called “Pizza Friends” ‘cause we started getting together about 3 years ago to go eat pizza all around Greensboro, Burlington. We ride together, travel together, go 4-wheeling together and camping. This is such a fun group to be around and our riding styles are the same which makes it easy to ride together. My husband (Sergio) myself, my nephew (Mike) and his girlfriend (Emilee) left Thomasville at 8:30am and met up with the rest of our gang in Burlington. Alan, & Donna, Jackie, Vickie with their daughter Gabbi, Pam & Greg, Bk & Barry, Rob & Jodi. We were lead by Jackie though all the back roads to HomeGrown Pizza in Holly Springs for lunch. Then on to Culver’s for Ice Cream and the back roads ride home. By the way, all but two women ( Gabbi and Emilee ) rode their own bikes!!! It was a beautiful 80 degree day to get out and enjoy on 2-Wheels.

Let us know how or why you are Livin' The Life We would love to hear your story! You can email us or send us a message on facebook: behindbarzmm@suddenlink.net www.facebook.com/BehindBarzMag No matter what...keep Livin’ The Life Behind Barz! ~Doobie

More Like the Mild Ones

By: By ANN July 17, This article was originally written in 1986 by Ann Japenga who worked for the Los Angeles Times. This was given to me by a fellow MM member, Jeanne D. She asked me to include it in Behind Barz so, I contacted Ann Japenga and asked for her permission to reprint it. She gladly said, please do! ~ Doobie YAKIMA, Wash. — Linda Dugeau’s boyfriend hoarded pennies during the summer of 1930 so he could purchase a $15 motorcycle. “The minute I saw it I wanted to ride,” said Dugeau, now a 73-year-old Escondido, Calif., resident. Girl riders, as the motorcycle magazines called them, were scarce in those days. As motorcycling became an obsession for Dugeau, she and her friend Dot Robinson sought to unite female motorcyclists in a club modeled after Amelia Earhart’s sorority for women pilots called the 99ers. Biker Ladies Dugeau, Robinson and 39 other women met for the first time in 1940. They settled on the name Motor Maids of America, and established two rules: A Motor Maid must own her own motorcycle, and she must at all times conduct herself like a lady. Last week, women from 22 states piloted their Harleys and Hondas to Yakima for the Motor Maids’ 46th annual convention. A few things have changed. You can’t get a bike for $15 anymore; the large touring models favored by Motor Maids cost anywhere from $6,000 to $10,000. The white gloves and ties that once distinguished club members are now donned only for parades. The organization’s name has been updated to Motor Maids Inc. But the Motor Maids are still out to prove that “women who ride motorcycles can be above reproach.” Their four-page constitution and bylaws, revised in 1985, stipulate that members must be of good character and “at no time shall a member of the Motor Maids appear on her motorcycle in shorts or abbreviated costume.”

40

Dot Robinson, now 74 and a resident of Lake Suzy, Fla., is the Motor Maids’ oldest active member and perhaps the most famous woman in the history of motorcycling. She’s remembered particularly for competing successfully against male riders in side car races in the ‘30s. The petite Robinson had ridden in from Florida on her pink Harley with her husband, Earl. Linda Dugeau sold her motorcycle last year after she broke a wrist in a spill and decided her bones were getting too brittle to risk another fall. Dugeau did not attend the convention this year because club rules say Motor Maids have to arrive at meetings on two wheels, and Dugeau now drives a VW bug. “I hate to give it up (motorcycling),” she said, “because that was the most fun I’ve had in my life.” When they weren’t out riding bikes, the conventioneers congregated in Room 148 at the Holiday Inn, which had been designated as the hospitality suite. The women nibbled cookies decorated in green icing with the Motor Maids shield-shaped emblem. They told tales of the day’s bike tours to local wineries or to pick apricots. Annual Road Run Dorothy Etherton, a marriage, family and child counselor from Escondido, recounted how she had taken a spill when her Honda Silverwing hit a rock on the road to Mt. St. Helens. Her bruised shoulder would keep her out of the annual Dot Robinson Road Run the following day. Thumbing through a cracked and broken photo album, club historian Kathy Davis, 62, of Sandy, Utah, recalled the early days of the Motor Maids when their helmets were made of leather or cloth; the bikes spewed oil and didn’t have windshields. “You were always eating bugs and the wind would wear you out,” said Davis, who joined the organization in 1947. “We used to have the darlingest uniforms,” Davis said. “It was an Eisenhower jacket with gray slacks and blue stripes down the sides and a little cap. It was adorable.” The current uniform is simpler, consisting of gray slacks and a blue jacket with Motor Maids From California (or another state) embroidered on the back. Among the mementos Davis oversees are old newspaper clippings. Some tell of Motor Maids working as motorcycle

Maids:

s Than the Wild Ones

JAPENGA , 1986 couriers, convoy escorts and dispatch riders during World War II. There is story after story about Motor Maids who toured the country alone on their motorcycles in the days when such an act required much daring; as well as articles about women motorcyclists in unconventional occupations. Linda Dugeau, for instance, dashed around congested L.A. streets delivering blueprints on her red HarleyDavidson from 1950 to 1975 when she retired. “I’ve fallen off every kind of way,” Dugeau said about accidents on that job. To make herself more visible to motorists, Dugeau wore a red jacket and a long red scarf in her ponytail. Most of the old-timers at the convention took up motorcycle riding at a time when their determination to ride a bike was regarded as rebellious. Many tell of outraged parents or acquaintances. Some of the Motor Maids attribute their love of motorcycling to childhood experiences that gave them the notion that freedom and excitement might be found on a bike. Unfettered in an Open Field Alice Ryan, a 71-year-old from Long Beach, Calif., said that when she was in high school she once observed a woman riding a Harley unfettered in an open field. “She handled that big Harley so easy; that decided me I wanted to ride a bike.” Seventy-two-year-old Vera Griffin, who lives in Columbus, Ind., and is one of the club’s original members, said she was walking home from school one day as a youngster when a motorcycle zoomed by. Something fell off the bike. Griffin picked up the fallen horn from the roadside. When the motorcyclist came back to retrieve it, Griffin said, “He let me ride with him to the turn in the road and I said, ‘When I grow up I’m going to have a motorcycle.’ ” Griffin doesn’t ride her 750 Triumph much anymore in winter because of arthritis in her hands. Her bike is painted blue and silver, Motor Maid colors, and sports a Motor Maid license plate holder. This is her 50th year riding motorcycles. “It’s a wonderful sport,” Griffin said. “You see so much more from a motorcycle than a car. You lean with the motorcycle; you sort of flow along.”

Some motorcyclists think of the Motor Maids as a quaint organization left over from the olden days of motorcycling, a group with little place in the sport as it is today. It’s true that most of club’s 500 members (104 attended the convention) are older women who joined the club in the ‘40s or ‘50s. But wherever the Motor Maids gather, local newspaper and television coverage invariably inspires a few younger women to join the club. The youngest Motor Maid is 21. Wide Range of Options Women who ride bikes have the option of joining co-ed touring clubs, local biking organizations for women, or the informally organized Women on Wheels motorcycle club. But some prefer the order and tradition Motor Maids represent. Don Behnke, a 49-year-old associate engineer at Hughes Aircraft, was waiting in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn for his wife, Donna, to return from the Dot Robinson Road Run, a timed competition in which the bikers must find their way to various checkpoints, maintaining a constant speed of about 30 m.p.h. The couple, who live in Torrance, Calif., each own a bike designed for long-distance touring. Don Behnke had his camera ready to record Donna’s return. He wore a cap that said Motor Maid Auxililary. “I think this is one of the best clubs around,” he said. “A bunch of clean-cut people.” Husbands, brothers and male companions are welcome at Motor Maid gatherings so long as they abide by club rules. Donna pulled into the rain-wet parking lot on a Honda Goldwing. She was wearing a blue rain suit, a Shoei helmet and white cowboy boots, which conform to Motor Maid footwear specifications. The pocket of Donna Behnke’s rain suit was stuffed with scraps of paper indicating the time she arrived at the various checkpoints. “I put you four minutes late,” Don Behnke said, consulting his watch.

Motor Maids: Convention Highlight Donna Behnke is state director of the California Motor Maids, a group that numbers about 40. Ten California Motor Maids attended the convention. Winners of the Dot Robinson Road Run, which is considered by most to be the highlight of the convention, would be awarded trophies at that evening’s banquet. The woman who rode the greatest distance to attend the convention (3,600 miles) would also receive a trophy. Linda Dugeau said she hopes that--old-fashioned or not--the Motor Maids will persevere even after the older members have garaged their bikes for the last time. “It is still select,” she said of the club membership. “You still have to behave yourself to be a Motor Maid.” Most of the Motor Miads members mentioned in this article have passed on. They were all legends in their own right. Linda Dugeau passed away February 17, 2000 at the age of 86. Dot Robinson passed away October 8th, 1999 at the age of 87. The Motor Maids are still thriving. Over 1,300 members in North America (United States & Canada). The oldest, continuous women’s motorcycle club in existance!
