Local tourism hoping for ‘Biden Bounce’

On the day that US President Joe Biden visited Co Louth, traffic to the VisitLouth.ie website jumped by 150 per cent, according to Jason McGee. Blackrock man Jason is a Digital Tourism Consultant for Louth County Council and Failte Ireland.

“The Biden Blog linked to the VisitLouth.ie website got over 2,000 visits in 24 hours,” he said.

“The Social Reach of an event like this is in the 100’s of million across platforms like Facebook Twitter, Insta, et cetera.

“People from all over the world will now know phrases like ‘Carlingford’, ‘Dundalk’ and ‘Louth’ and the Biden Bounce will benefit not only those locations but all across Ireland as a result and for years to come.”

Jason added: “The Biden Blog was a running commentary on the day and it worked very well.

“It drew interest from people living locally who wanted to know about roads and things like that and also from people internationally.

He continued: “Louth County Council was

also running its own marketing campaign on the LouthCoCo Twitter feed.

“And there was information being shared on the VisitLouth Twitter feed. On the day itself i was working from 7am to 9pm. it was very intense.

“it demanded a lot of concentration because i wanted to make sure everything was correct

Jason concluded: “it was a once in a generation event. We got 3,000 hits across the website and blog.

“The reach for Dundalk was 89 million people, for Louth is was 257 million people and for Carlingford the reach was 334 million so there was a total combined reach of 680 million.

Tributes pour in for Gentleman Jim

TribuTes have been pouring in following the death of former independent counsellor Jim ryan who passed away peacefully in Our Lady of Lourdes hospital on sunday.

Jim, from Fr. Murray Park, was well known locally in both the sporting and political fronts having played, managed and served as chairman for his beloved Clan Na Gael GAA team as well as serving his community with distinction on both the Dundalk Town Council and Louth County County Council.

Jim was first elected to Dundalk Town Council in 1999 and remained there until Dundalk Town Council was abolished in 2014. He also served on Louth County Council from 2004 and served two terms.

Former independent counsellor Martin bellew worked alongside Jim on Dundalk Town Council and described him as an ‘absolute gentleman’

“i was very fond of Jim and i used to collect him for Dundalk Town council meetings. He was definitely one of nature’s true gentlemen and he was always very straight with everybody he met. if he believed in a cause he would fight tooth and nail to get it done and everything he did he did for the people of his area that he represented,” stated Martin.

Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council Conor Keelan also paid tribute to Jim describing him as a ‘strong advocate of his constituents’.

“i had the privilege of serving alongside Jim in the council and he was also a very close friend of my Dad’s who served alongside him also. He was always a strong advocate for his constituents and a very interesting man to have on the local authority. i send my condolences to all of his family and friends,” stated Conor.

Fianna Fáil councillor sean Kelly also paid tribute to Jim calling him ‘an absolute gentleman to his fingertips’

“Sad news filtering through with the passing of Jim. He served our area with distinction for 15 years on both Dundalk Town Council and Louth County Council. Jim was always on call and his dedicated and passionate approach to helping local people and communities was second to none. Jim

the most of it in terms of tourism now”.

Meanwhile, Louth County Council Director of services Thomas Mcevoy said the reach and impact of President biden’s visit to Co Louth has shown “phenomenal numbers”.

“if you look at some of the mentions online, Dundalk was mentioned 2,300 times, that is approximately a 100-fold increase,” he said.

“The number of mentions and reach was significant. The visit went very well. in Google Maps over 4,000 individuals searched for Carlingford Castle.

“it gives a sense of the interest in President biden’s visit to the county and we hope some of it will result in visits to Louth.”

He added: “We also know that 80 per cent of the reach was international and the majority of that was from the united states.”

issue of sheep attacks raised in the Dáíl

The issue of sheep attacks by dogs, particularly during lambing season, has been raised by Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú in Leinster House recently.

The Sinn Féin TD said the issue had been discussed with him by his colleague Cllr. Antóin Watters and by many farmers,

particularly in relation to the commonage on the Cooley Mountains. He said that Louth County Council, the dog wardens and ‘even An Garda Síochána are attempting to ensure that people understand the responsibilities of dog owners’.

He said: ‘We need to

look at the legislation that underpins it. I am not entirely sure what “effectual control” of the dog means. If everyone did the right thing, we probably would not need half the rules, but this is a very specific issue’.

he said he had spoken to a farmer earlier that

day, Tom, who had said that ‘sometimes when large dogs are on leads, the leads could be 25 ft long so there is no chance of controlling them’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘We do need to look at this. I know the difficulties with enforcement. Tom also spoke about the fact that at

times people are involved in other outdoor pursuits, possibly involving motor bikes and quads.

‘There must be engagement with those who are involved in all these sorts of activities. We need responsibility and good manners. People are talking about the possibility

of by-laws, but we must consider legislative pieces also’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said this week that he has submitted an oral Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Agriculture seeking an update as to how the issue is being progressed.

Hospital charges scrapped by the Health Minister

The Minister for health has signed an order that will abolish public in-patient charges at all public hospitals from last Monday (17th April).

Previously there had been a charge of €80 per day, up to a maximum of

€800 in a year, for people accessing care as a public patient in all public hospitals.

After the enactment of the Health (Amendment) Act 2023, which was signed into law on 4 April, Minister for

health Stephen Donnelly has now signed the commencement order for the removal of charges.

Speaking after signing the order the Minister called it an important step for families.

“I am delighted to an-

nounce that from today, people will no longer be charged when accessing public inpatient care in our public hospitals.

“This legislation removes the existing financial burden of public inpatient charges when

accessing care in a public hospital. The removal of these charges, announced as part of Budget 2023, is an important step towards reducing the healthcare costs of patients and families.

“This measure builds

on the abolition of public in-patient charges for children, which I introduced last year, and is another significant step in ensuring that people have access to affordable healthcare services.”

The new measure

which was brought in during the last budget is thought to be costing the state in the region of €30m. Last year fees for children under 16 were also abolished.

biden stopped off at The Food House on Clanbrassil street during a walkabout of Dundalk on Wednesday, April 12.

President biden stopped at The Food House to buy some sweet treats and greet staff members and wave to excited onlookers.

The Food House, a gourmet food store and deli, is owned by Jerome McAteer and his husband, bobby Wain.

President biden bought lemon meringue, chocolate eclairs, bread and butter pudding, pear and almond cake, as well as a mug with an image of a dog on it.

He paid with a €50 note and gave a €10 euro tip to some of the workers who have special needs.

Later that day, President biden and his entourage stopped at The Windsor bar on Dublin street, Dundalk.

The owner of The Windsor, Donal Mc

Geough, told The Dundalk Leader that the visit went “extremely well looking back on it now”.

“it was all organised at short notice. it wasn’t confirmed until Tuesday afternoon. it was all fairly helter skelter after we got the confirmation,” said Donal.

“i got to greet President biden and his family at the door and he

spent his time mingling with those in attendance. There were between 120 and 150 people there.”

President biden met with distant cousins John Owen Finnegan and Councillor Andrea Mcevitt – as well as other local politicians at The Windsor.

“My mother, Maureen McGeough nee Mc elroy, spoke with him. They had a nice con-

nection, a nice moment together. They were speaking about bereavements,” said Donal.

“He’s a sincere man, a nice man. After he finished making his speech, he spent his time taking selfies, shaking hands and there was a bit of singing too.

“The whole thing was very enjoyable. it was momentous and historic.”

Arthur had got word that the President was going to visit the Food House on Clanbrassil street in Dundalk and so he made his way onto Dundalk’s main street at around 4:30 taking up position at the barrier directly across from McAteers. That strategy paid dividends for Arthur who spent 44 years serving with the reserve Defence Force with the President’s car (known as The beast) stopping directly in front of him.

“i couldn’t have picked a better spot to be honest,” said Arthur. “He got out of The beast which had stopped directly in front

of me and i gave him a salute before telling him he was very welcome to Dundalk. He saluted in return and shook my hand. so i can say i was the first person in Dundalk that President biden shook hands with,” laughed Arthur.

“i was delighted to have got to see him but i got another wee surprise a few minutes later after he had gone on a bit of a walkabout. He came

back to me and asked me to give him my camera and he proceeded to take a selfie of the two us. i couldn’t believe it. He comes across as a very genuine guy and it was fantastic for the town to have him visit. i have the picture on my phone and the plan is to get it printed out and put in a frame. it was a real buzz and my phone has been hopping for the past few days with

people slagging me and having the craic about meeting the President of the united states. i was there twenty years ago when President Clinton came but i got nowhere near him as there were massive crowds at the square that time. This time i was determined to try and get to meet the President and thankfully it all worked out brilliantly,” added Arthur.

brian’s walking challenge with a difference

AN Ardee man is planning to walk for eight hours straight in a bid to raise money for two charities.

brian Duff currently lives in the village of Meigh near slieve Gullion and works for irish Life in the Customer Centre in Finnabair industrial estate, Dundalk.

“i’m taking on a walking challenge with a difference on Friday, 21st of April. i’m

going to walk for a full eighthour shift,” said brian.

“i will also be joined by colleagues for different times, to keep me motivated. i’ve run marathons before but i’ve never walked for eight hours continuously.

The event is in aid of staff Charities, who are supporting two charities this year, Childvision and the Gavin Glynn Foundation.

“This is a slightly different challenge for me. staff Charities was founded in 1996 by irish Life and Canada Life in 1996,” said brian.

“every year staff nominate charities to be supported by fundraising efforts. Around 60 to 8o charities are nominated and then it is narrowed down to two final charities.

“This year the staff voted to support the Gavin Glynn

Foundation which i nominated. It’s the first time a charity nominated by a Dundalk worker has been chosen.”

He added: “The second charity we are supporting this year is Child Vision. i nominated the Gavin Glynn Foundation because it’s a charity my family think a lot of.

“Gavin Glynn died of cancer at the age of four and the

charity was set up by his parents in his memory.

“it helps to support families with the costs associated with cancer treatment or other serious illnesses.”

brian concluded: “since 1996 when staff Charities was founded, it has raised €4.5 million for good causes.

“i’ll be starting the charity walk at 8am on Friday, 21

April and I will be finishing at 4pm. i’ll start out from the Dundalk Irish Life office and head up to the lights at Xerox and take a right towards DkiT and then do a loop back to the office.”

easter ‘bunny run’ Fun at Dundalk iT junior parkrun

ON easter sunday morning, almost 50 kids between 4 and 14 enjoyed an unusually healthy start to the day as they scampered around the 2k Dundalk iT junior parkrun course in the sports Grounds at DkiT. Arriving to a themed morning with extra treats is not unusual for these kids and their families, and easter sunday was no exception! As they made their way around the usual course, they found mini easter egg tokens and when they hopped over the finish line, they ‘cashed them in’ for a special easter goody bag.

“it was great to have such a healthy start to the usual chocolate-filled day on Easter Sunday,” laughed elaine McCann, mother of 9 year old Cian and 14 year old Aine. “i started taking the kids to junior parkrun so we’d have something active to do together, and with regular wee events like this throughout the year, the kids are dragging me out of bed every week now!”

junior parkrun event director sarah Mc eneaney said, “This is a fantastic free event to encourage families in the community to regularly get out and active throughout the year. People can run or walk the course. We want to make it fun and inclusive, and the ‘bunny run’ is just one of the many events we hold. We welcome anyone to register their kids and join us on a sunday morning as we move into those lovely spring mornings.”

Transplant Games in italy in March 2024.

speaking at the announcement of the sponsorship, team captain and heart transplant recipient, John brennan, said “We are a mixed group brought together by the gift of organ donation. representing the country gives huge motivation for those on organ waiting lists to stay well, joy to those who spent their childhoods in and out of hospital; denied of the opportunity to participate in childhood sport and provides a wonderful framework of support, training and brotherhood for us all. We have huge plans for this team and welcome the support of sonas bathrooms.”

He continued “Whilst our stories are unique, each of us shares a common bond of facing adversity. Team ireland showcases the success of organ donation and transplanta-

tion whilst offering inspiration to those who are newly transplanted or newly diagnosed with organ failure. Once they are twelve months post-transplant, we hope some might consider joining the team. We welcome all levels of fitness even if someone just has the capacity to spend a few minutes on the pitch that’s their achievement.”

CeO of sonas, richard sloan said “When this opportunity was brought to us through one of the sonas team here whose brother is involved, we didn’t give it a second thought. The Transplant Games show us what the gift of organ donation does. These athletes are the living embodiment of the generosity of others. it is a genuine privilege for sonas to support the bravery of these extraordinary men and the wonderful families who have

supported them, both their own families and the families of the organ donors.”

“We have been inspired by the team and our sponsorship is just the beginning. We hope to use all our channels including our own employees and the wide network of bathroom retailers, builders and plumbers merchants we work with to help spread the vital message of the importance of organ donation.”

soccer Transplant Team ireland have asked people to please have the conversation with your loved ones and consider carrying a physical or digital organ donor card, by searching “Digital Organ Donor Card” on your app store. Dundalk duo call for support in irish Music Month bursary award

NeGrO impacto, a Dundalk duo comprising of vocalist-songwriter Chi Chi and producer, multiinstrumentalist Laurence (aka strangeLove) have been named as one of the six national finalists in the ‘A new local hero’ awards. The duo have called on the people of Louth to support them by voting for them at www.irishmusicmonth.ie

The pair quickly gained attention in the irish music scene thanks to their unique neo-soul sound, impressive musicianship and fun live sets. Named as part of the ‘2FM rising’ class of 2023 and ones to watch across many outlets, the duo are in for another incredible year.

Tickets for the highly anticipated live finale of A New Local Hero 2023, featuring some of the hottest young talents in ireland, are on sale now.

Following a phenomenal talent search, featuring a genre-blending selection of acts from right across the country, Hot Press and the independent broadcasters of ireland (ibi) recently announced the six national finalists for A New Local Hero. Out of the hugely talented 25 regional finalists, Brad Heidi (Galway bay FM), Darian June (red FM), Negro impacto (LMFM), Temi (FM104), Paddy Keyes (Ocean FM) and eva Campbell (sPiN

1038) have been chosen to perform at the live finale showcase event at The Academy, in Dublin, on April 25.

However, there are still huge opportunities for the 19 artists who didn’t make the final six: this year’s edition of A New Local Hero also includes a special new element – with all 25 regional finalists still in with a chance to be crowned the winner of the Wild Card Award voted by the public. The Wild Card winner will be awarded a €2,500 bursary.

Dundalk duo Negro impacto comprises vocalist Chi-Chi and producer strangeLove. The pair joined forces during lockdown, and are fast becoming one of the most exciting, genre-defying acts in the country. After a busy few months, they capped off the year with a new eP featuring reworked versions of their songs. They’ve since clocked up impressive live performances, and an appearance on All City’s This Way Vol. 1 compilation – with even more big things to come.

As one of the central features of irish Music Month, A New Local Hero is a major call to arms for irish musicians and bands – with all 25 participating radio stations having reached out for submissions as part of the talent search. every participating radio station selected four finalists each

– giving them the chance to play live on air, and paying them for their performance, thanks to the support of the broadcasting Authority of ireland, under its sound & Vision scheme.

From there, the station’s four finalists were whittled down to one ‘Local Hero’ from each – a major honour in itself, which will serve as a huge milestone in the career of the selected 25 artists.

“it has been really exciting, hearing the cream of the new artists who are coming through all over ireland,” Hot Press editor Niall stokes said. “i know that the judges were faced with some enormously difficult calls. But there was also a very strong unanimity in relation to the six that have now been shortlisted, that these are very special acts, with the potential to really flourish in the long run. There can be only one artist selected as A New Local Hero 2023, but it is very clear, from the music that we have been hearing, that we are on the right track here in ireland at the moment, producing artists of real calibre across all genres. Long may it continue.”

Tickets for the A New Local Hero live event at the Academy on Tuesday, 25 April are now available at https://www.ticketmaster.ie/a-new-local-hero-tickets/artist/5366306

Maurice recalls the excitement of JFK visit Garrett’s gift for the President

THe recent excitement and hoopla surrounding President Joe biden’s visit to Dundalk brought back memories for a local blackrock native of a visit from another us President to ireland.

91-year old Maurice O’Neill, originally from Dundalk but living in blackrock for over 60 years, was a huge John F Kennedy fan and when his trip to ireland was announced he and his wife Maeve made the trip to Dublin to try and catch a glimpse of their hero.

“i had just purchased a new car at the time and when myself and my wife heard he was coming to Dublin we immediately decided to drive up to see him.

John F Kennedy was probably the most irish President ever to sit in the White House and he was hugely popular in ireland back in the 60’s. The security around the President was nothing like what it is today and myself and Maeve were able to park at the

entrance to Dublin airport. At that time you could get as close as you wanted to and we ended up maybe six feet away from his open topped car as he drove by us. i shouted something at him and he looked over at me and waved.

“We got back in the car and then drove over to the Phoenix Park as we knew he was going to meet the President. He was walking up the avenue to Aras an uachtaráin and i remember my sister-in-law Maria Clarke getting to shake his hand. He was

such a charismatic guy and everybody was trying to get close to him. i remember climbing a tree to get a better look at him walking past and looking back it was amazing how lax the security was. There were no gardaí around him and he was very accessible. unfortunately that lack of security would eventually cost him his life as he was shot just six months after we seen him.

“The recent visit of President Biden definitely made me remember that great day we

spent in Dublin when JFK came to ireland. There is something special about an American President coming to this country especially when they have irish heritage. i would have liked to have gone into town to get a glimpse of President biden but unfortunately the weather was pretty bad and i’m 91 now so i watched it all unfold on tv instead. i thought it was brilliant for the town that President biden came to visit us and it all seemed to go very well,” stated Maurice.

THe atmosphere has been electric in the wee County of Louth this week, with everyone talking about the impending visit of us President Joe biden to the region.

Mr. biden arrived in belfast yeseterday ahead of his whistle-stop four-day trip around the island of ireland, which marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

Following on from meeting with the british Prime Minister, rishi sunak, in belfast, Mr. biden was given a huge welcome home to Carlingford, Co. Louth, where he visited the stunning Carlingford Castle. Mr. biden’s great-great-great-grandfather Owen Finnegan, emigrated to the us from the Cooley Peninsula in the 1840’s. Following on from visiting his ancestral home, he made a stop in Dundalk town centre where local people cheered and lined the streets to meet him.

Award winning jeweller, Garrett Mallon, from the Garrett Mallon Design House in Carlingford, was delighted to have received a commission from the Louth County Council to create a bespoke handmade gift for President Joe biden for his historic return to Co. Louth.

Garrett created a pair of hand-

crafted cufflinks, which are based on his first ever signature collection, The ‘Cloicin’ Collection. Cloicin, meaning small stone in irish, derives its name from the stony shoreline of Carlingford Lough, where Mr. biden’s ances-

tors came from. The collection was inspired by the wonderful surroundings of beautiful medieval Carlingford, where the Garrett Mallon Design House is based. Garrett created this collection where the etched surface of the jewellery reflects the sandy surface of the shoreline where the stones and pebbles lie. The collection is handcrafted by Garrett in sterling silver. President biden’s cufflinks have been handmade in sterling silver with solid gold pebbles on the surface.

Garrett has been commissioned to create bespoke pieces for high profile clients on numerous occasions, including President Michael D Higgins, President Mary McAleese, and the GAA.

Garrett has commented, “This is a very special commission for me, and i am honoured to have been asked to create a gift for President biden to represent the region. On receiving the commission, i immediately thought of my Cloicin Collection as Mr. biden has such a strong connection to Carlingford and the Cooley Peninsula, as do i, and he is very proud of his irish ancestry. i hope that when he wears the cufflinks, he will smile and think of us here in Carlingford.”

Your birthday is here today Son, I just wanted you to know, How much I deeply love you, And that I miss you so. On this day I should celebrate, But for me, that now proves hard, For unlike other mothers, I cannot send a simple birthday card.

No kisses can I give you, Or birthday gifts to buy, All I can do is put flowers, On the resting place where you lie.

So please wait for me, Son, Until my days are through, Then I’ll go and spend all of your birthdays,

In heaven just with you xx. Happy heavenly 30th birthday, my wee big man, missing you everyday, lots of love, Mam xxxx.

TO celebrate world earth day we are kicking off our first large clean of the year on April 22nd in rockmarshall from 123pm.

This annual event is run by the local An Taisce National award winning Peninsula Marine Litter Project who are bringing many other groups together on the day. We start under the bridge opposite Fitzpatricks and work towards Lordship.

This has been the most littered area in recent years so all support is appreciated. Already we have volunteers from the Louth Volunteer network attending alongside the local tidy towns groups and employees of busi-

nesses like PayPal and O’Connor roofing and we would be delighted to welcome other groups.

We would ask as many as possible to come and take part in a community event and network with others while cleaning the

environment. it’s a excellent opportunity to educate children and suitable for all ages. bags, pickers & gloves are supplied.

The Community Alerts Quad and trailer will be used to being these back to a central point to limit any car-

Celebrating World earth Day with a coastal clean up Tractor Run to remember Sean

THe annual sean Loughran Charity Tractor run took place on sunday 5th February 2023, in Collon, Co Louth. The event honours the memory of a Glasallen farmer, sean Loughran who died suddenly at the age of just 56 four years ago. When sean died from a sudden heart attack on 8th February 2019 his friends in the local farming community got together to hold the tractor run in his memory and to raise funds for the irish Heart Foundation. They have been holding the event ever since, raising funds for different charities every year an this year’s run is for mental health charity, sOsAD.

A huge thanks to all involved in organising this year’s event raising 5,500 euro for sOsAD. Organising Committee presenting cheque to Marie Kennedy, sOsAD Fundraising & Pr Coordinator. An amazing amount raised. Thank you so much. Without events like this sOsAD could not provide the services we do throughout our six offices based in Louth x 2, Meath, Cavan, Monaghan and Laois from which we provide our services. We receive very little funding from the Government and Hse so we rely very heavily on the generosity of the public, donations, fundraising events, corporate sponsorship

and once-off grants. This funding is used to maintain our offices, services and staff.

sOsAD (save our sons & Daughters) offer support and services for people who are struggling with suicidal ideation, self harming, depression, bereavement, stress and anxiety, or if you simply need to talk. if you want to talk, we are here to listen. you can message us, call us, or call into our office. We are a mental health charity that provides support and services free of charge to anyone who is struggling with depression, bereavement, stress, anxiety suicidal ideation, selfharming, or if you simply want to talk. over the 6 SOSAD offices we facilitated and helped over 5,000 clients. We have approximately 400 counsellors that give their time free of charge to help our clients along what is sometimes a very difficult journey.

Our helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No matter what time of the day or night we are here, whether you need help yourself, or you are concerned about someone close to you.
