Ao impor diversas formas de confinamento e de distanciamento social, a Covid-19 veio colocar enorme pressão, a nível global, sobre os sistemas de ensino. Em Agosto passado, segundo dados da ONU, mais de 160 países tinham fechado as suas escolas, uma medida que afectou mais de mil milhões de estudantes em todo o mundo.

Numa intervenção feita na altura, António Guterres, secretário-geral da Organização das Nações Unidas ONU, consciente de que o regresso à “normalidade” poderá, mesmo nas previsões mais optimistas, levar alguns anos, sublinhava que “enfrentamos uma catástrofe geracional que pode desperdiçar um potencial humano incalculável,

minar décadas de progresso e acentuar desigualdades enraizadas”. Mas, como em todas as crises de grande magnitude, o responsável referia também que esta pode ser “uma oportunidade para redesenhar a educação”. According to UN, more than 160 countries closed schools last August, a measure that affected more than a billion students worldwide. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, aware that returning to “normality” could take some years, even under the best-case scenario, underlined on the occasion that “now we face a generational catastrophe that could waste untold human potential, undermine decades of progress and exacerbate entrenched inequalities”. But, as in major crises, the official also stated that this could be “an opportunity to redesign the educational system”. He added: “The decisions that governments and partners take now will have lasting impact on hundreds of millions of young people, and on the development prospects of countries for decades to come. (…) We need to invest on digital literacy and infrastructure, a move towards learning how to learn, a complete new way of learning throughout life and reinforce links between formal and nonformal education. Above all, we need to use flexible learning methods, digital technologies and modernised curricula, providing meanwhile continuous support for teachers and communities. To achieve this, we need investment in digital literacy and infrastructure, an evolution towards learning how to learn, a rejuvenation of life-long learning and strengthened links between formal and non-formal education.
