Telling and listening to stories are at the heart of what it means to be human. Fiction is the telling of stories that are in some way imaginary. A writer imagines and creates a world and characters and shares it with their readers. Writers find inspiration for fiction from real life, from old stories, from a person they have met or a place they have visited.
Fiction is like a spider’s web, attached ever so lightly perhaps, but still attached to life at all four corners.
Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall
Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own
