Director’s foreword

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE OSKAR VON MILLER FORUM, Ever since the Oskar von Miller Forum – an educational initiative of the Bavarian construction industry – was launched on 2 December 2009, it has been promoting the education of engineers in the building industry at its location near the Technical University of Munich. In fulfilling this mission, it has supported scholarship holders for more than 10 years in their pursuit of excellence, both in their respective specialisations and in related disciplines, hosting an interdisciplinary and international programme of public lectures and a variety of in-house events. At the same time, it is a place for scholarship holders to connect with guest scientists who are also available as mentors for them. Besides looking back on our programme, this Yearbook 2019/20 gives a retrospective of all past lecturers invited and all topics addressed in the chapter “10 th anniversary of the Oskar von Miller Forum.” The section “Providing inspiration – with a focus on the future” gives an account of my talk with Gerhard Müller, Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at the TUM and a member of our Programme Advisory Council, about changes both in society and in the construction industry, and their future implications for the scholarship holders. In the Programme Advisory Council’s foreword, the building’s architect Thomas Herzog recounts the origins and the development of the Oskar von Miller Forum. Our lecture series started in November 2019 with architect Dorte Mandrup from Copenhagen who presented her remarkable projects at UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Civil engineer Guy Nordenson from New York presented projects addressing questions of social and climate

change since 11 September 2001 in New York City and on the U.S. North Atlantic coast. In January 2020, Sarah Spiekermann discussed central questions of our knowledge society and how to consider relationship be tween ethics and digitalisation. At the end of the winter semester, landscape architect Michel Desvigne from Paris addressed the changes in his profession as well as the challenges arising from climate change and the urgent need for ecological responses. The COVID -19 pandemic made the summer semester 2020 a special chal lenge for us, too. We were nonetheless able to host two keynote lectures in July that were attended by the speakers and the scholarships holders and at the same time transmitted to a large online audience via live stream. Harald Welzer, sociologist and one of the leading minds of Germany, presented his future images of sustainability. Finally, architect Thomas Rau, a pioneer of the circular economy, advocated novel solutions in the construction sector, while presenting an innovative economic concept. I hope you enjoy reading this very special yearbook.

Programme Advisory Council’s foreword

FROM THE PROGRAMME ADVISORY COUNCIL 10th anniversary – a time to look back and envision the future When the Oskar von Miller Forum was first designed and planned, it was a miracle – given the large number of individuals involved from various disciplines – that consistent consensus was reached at all stages of the process. Even as very non-standard structural features were imple mented, there was a consistent flow and input of expertise in the project. The ambitions of the clients increased along with their perceptibly growing confidence in our ideas and suggestions for the design of a building that was intended to embody the overall idea of the project by way of a teaching building. When the Programme Advisory Council was established as an honorary board with an educational mandate, one of the initially envisaged goals was to host events that would be developed in form and content – not in terms of a defined approach, but as a self-learning system. The monograph published to commemorate the opening states: “A programme of interdisciplinary communication, discussions and other events is designed to make people aware of the full range of activities a master builder has to cover and to promote a positive long-term perspective for architects and constructional engineers. In this way, holistic thinking, interdisciplinary understanding, a universal outlook in the education provided, and comprehensive, integrative abilities in the perception and communication of the needs of the clients can be developed. counters between study guests and leading minds from the professional world and from the realms of science, culture and politics, as well as important groups in society, can also take place here.” The Programme Advisory Council was conceived as a body whose members investigate and discuss the potential fields of action of engineers in the construction industry, and has continued to fulfil this mission up to this day. It is our agreed goal to augment the expertise acquired through university training by adding the human, social and cultural dimension of education, which often complements the former and is an essential asset for our judg ment and actions. This means understanding the world in its complex diversity and developing our own role with determination and a focus on values. This also means implementing what is necessary and responsible with regard to impact and maintaining a balance between humanity, nature and technology while keeping in mind the historical developments and remaining attentive to the necessary and true bigger picture but also to the requisite diversity in the further development of the construction engineering professions.

An essential key to achieving these ambitions is close and highly effective cooperation with the Forum’s management team. This underlines the vital role the latter plays in the positive development of a new institution that does not have a comparable forerunner in the field of construction. During the founding phase, a successful move was made to bring Prof. Dr.-Ing. Werner Lang back to Munich from the University of Texas at Austin – as a TUM professor, architect, and a godsend in terms both of technical and educational expertise. Together with his team, he de serves great praise and thanks for his outstanding commitment and high level of excellence in his role of Director with a remarkable international outreach.

Outlook How can reliable, positive prospects for the future be created in a world full of questions and highly problematic political structures and players in the international arena, as well as uncertainties in professional life that we have not experienced for decades? The future holds no certainties let alone any guarantees. But let’s think positively. When designing, planning, calculating, depicting, implementing and communicating, we should not let ourselves be guided by the material characteristics of the solution to be developed for a project, the close connection of which is often taken for granted. The aim should rather be a flexible concept of use based on an open-minded design process using a methodologically sensible stepwise approach; for

buildings and their components as large technical units for long-term use with system qualities orientated towards sustainability, not current style preferences. The idea is to design programmes with a spectrum of possi ble solutions – for topical tasks that truly have social relevance and therefore deserve priority. This is the scenario we expect, and we will need young, well-trained, cosmopolitan engineers to design our material world in an – in the best sense – economical, cooperative and careful approach, at moderate expense in restrained aesthetics.

For Werner Lang and Gerhard Müller, one topic is of particular interest: How can the Oskar von Miller Forum promote the education of its scholarship holders, the future professionals in the construction industry, to complement their academic university education? They both look back on a 10-year success story and give an outlook on the future. They speak about the work of the Programme Advisory Council, digital transformation and their holistic approach – with a great sense of responsibility and captivating enthusiasm.

Throughout its 10-year history as a meeting centre of the construction industry, the Oskar von Miller Forum has been dedicated to promoting construction technicians, architects as well as civil and en vironmental engineers above and beyond their a ctual programme of studies. What exactly characterises the work of the Programme Advisory Council? Werner Lang (W.L.): The Programme Advisory Council convenes twice a year. Before the meeting, an extensive screening for potential topics and speakers is carried out by me and my team. When the Programme Advisory Council meets, we discuss overarching topics and eligible speakers who come into question. One important aspect we consider besides the speaker’s expertise is their personality. Gerhard Müller (G.M.): The meetings are prepared in an outstanding way. We, the members of the Programme Advisory Council, really appreciate that. Al most all of us are closely involved in instruction and conveying knowledge. We all think about the world, the future and, most of all, the young people. We ask ourselves, what mark can we leave? With this in mind, Werner Lang consolidates and orchestrates potential input with a great deal of forethought to inspire our minds and trigger discussion.

Gerhard Müller and Werner Lang with interviewer Astrid Schön in the library.

W.L.: To me, it’s always a great pleasure to see how interested you are and how everyone goes along. We interact with a great deal of openness and trust. G.M.: It’s a delight to be part of this. I think what we all share is a sense of enthusiasm to work for the scholarship holders. They are the ones who will shape our future. Just think of it this way: A well-staged lecture delivered to around 54 scholarship holders who

will later embark on their professional lives and perhaps be leaders to groups of 10 or 20 individuals, multiplied by the years of their professional careers – that’s a major impact on society. The focus, however, is not only on topics in the field of construction. W.L.: That’s true. Our programme covers quite a broad spectrum. We keep gaining a better understanding of how fundamentally important it is to consider the interplay between various disciplines – it requires networked thinking. We can see that in our work at the TUM , where we have been working with psychologists, sociologists, medical professionals and

economists for the first time this semester. Due to the coronavirus situation, we offer 30-minute online input sessions and discussions with various disciplines. The task for the students is to assess the content in terms of its relevance to their own discipline and to position it accordingly. That’s really exciting. The inspi ration we provide at the Oskar von Miller Forum also enhances interdisciplinary thinking by triggering joint reflection on questions such as “How does the topic presented relate to my own field?” and “What opportunities does it hold for me?” This helps us foster a sense of “being part of humanity” and raising awareness of one’s own responsibility and creative potential. G.M.: The idea is to embrace a holistic view. To find ways to shape the world based on a holistic understanding. That is why we at the Oskar von Miller Forum try to strike a balance between well-founded expertise and inspiring openness for other disciplines. Therefore, our fundamental job is not to communicate achievements but to acquire skills. W.L.: We want our scholarship holders to realise the potential of interdisciplinary exchange, reflect on their own career field and, going forward from these reflections, take on a proactive role. This is why, in addition to the input they receive in the guest lectures, the scholarship holders can also participate in discussion rounds, workshops and personal talks. These are an important part of our work, as they are centred on human aspects and fundamental questions such as “What is my personal development goal? How do I organise myself? How do I interact at an intercultural level?”

This type of overarching, holistic approach is not only gaining importance in academia and training. Its influence on professional life in the construction sector has become particularly evident in the context of digital transformation. W.L.: That’s true. BIM (Building Information Modelling) or the digital twin approach bring together all relevant levels and stages of a project in a single system. Digital twins, for instance, are not only a tool for representing spatial models, but also for embedding information. For example, we can simulate construction processes or energy flows across the entire lifecycle or link material properties with health requirements. We can use all stages of simulated reality to obtain information for stage zero of the design process. It offers an enormous potential for optimisation.

G.M.: Yes, digitalisation is a major factor driving development in the construction sector. However, it is essential to handle new technologies and core skills jointly and verify their compatibility through all kinds of investigations. This means we are not only talking about exchanging data but about evaluating them in a holistic approach. We will see a breakthrough of the digital twin model once we succeed in linking simulations – with social demands and holistic evaluations. Therefore, digitalisation merely gives us a range of options, and it is our job to use them in purposeful ways. Given all the changes the world has been facing, this is basically about life itself and about social interactions and correlations.

Univ.Prof. Dr.-Ing. Werner Lang  —  He is Professor of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Design and Building at the TUM and has been the Director of the Oskar von Miller Forum since 2010.

What does this mean for the future of the construction industry? W.L.: The construction industry shapes our environment. This means our actions have a direct influence – for example on our mental and physical health. And that means we don’t just build a bridge or a home, but we have to give thought to the materials, processes and the entire life cycle of a structure. The question we are concerned about shouldn’t be our next job assignment. It should be: Are we living up to our social responsibility? G.M.: Yes, this systemic approach will become increasingly important. It was precisely against this background that the Oskar von Miller Forum created a timeless format for excellence building ten years ago.

Timeless, however, does not mean rigid. G.M.: Absolutely not. We don’t force our scholarship holders into a template. We are kept up to date about the overall setting here in the Forum, are well-involved and can discuss things constructively – for example, whether new formats are needed to fulfil the mission of the Oskar von Miller Forum. W.L.: We have to keep trying to create positive images of the future and generate enthusiasm to make them happen. Today, it is more important than ever to guide the scholarship holders and students. We have to be guiding lights.

Programme mandate The programme of the Oskar von Miller Forum is dedicated to the education of engineers in the field of construction at the Technical University of Munich. With an interdisciplinary and international orientation, it supports scholarship hold ers in their pursuit of excellence in both their own field of spe cialisation and in related disciplines. The programme is directly related to the university education of building professionals. Linking to the traditional concept of the ‘master builder’ who possessed combined skills in all branches of building, the programme establishes connec tions and links between construction engineering, environ mental engineering and surveying, between architecture and the artisan trades as well as social sciences, humani ties, economics and natural sciences.

Programme elements INSPIRATION – INTERDISCIPLINARY AND INTERCULTURAL The programme of the Oskar von Miller Forum consists of three main com ponents. One of these components is guest scientists who, as scientists in residence, share their know-how and experience and are available as mentors for the scholarship holders. They contribute to and enrich the programme as well as day-to-day life at the Oskar von Miller Forum both from a professional and an intercultural point of view. The second component is the public programme of events that provides inspiration for the students’ professional development. Internationally renowned experts hold sophisticated lectures on topics in construction engineering and related fields. The third component is the intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange between the scholarship holders, which is nurtured by living and working together. For example, in tandem presentations, they share insights into their stud ies or their research projects. A number of additional in-house activities are organised by the scholarship holders on their own initiative. They fur thermore enhance their social skills by taking part in personal development seminars.

P rogramme elements

EXCELLENCE The Oskar von Miller Forum offers future civil and environmental engineers, architects and construction technicians temporary accommodation and contributes excellent ideas and inspiration to their education through its programme. In dialogue with guest scientists from across the globe, scholarship holders enhance and extend their interests and are thus pre pared for working life with tasks spanning different disciplines. It is in this way that the Oskar von Miller Forum fosters their pursuit of excellence. The Oskar von Miller Forum considers technical expertise and social skills to lie at the heart of excellence. Characteristics like personal initiative, staying power, a sense of responsibility and specialist knowledge are of central importance, as are the ability and willingness to communicate as well as taking appropriate actions and showing reliability.

CAREER ASSISTANCE Scholarship holders are given the opportunity to receive personal assistance and support to promote their career development through individual counselling sessions with team members from the Oskar von Miller Forum. Questions discussed may relate to students’ professional develop ment, personal expectations regarding their future career path or specific feedback on their portfolios or CVs. Students can also obtain recommendations concerning suitable further in-house or external training.

Workshop talks The workshop talks are a source of inspiration for scholarship holders to plan their future careers. Entrepreneurs explain how to start up a company or professionals from engineering or architectural firms discuss the particular challenges of complex projects with the scholar ship holders.

Tandem presentations All scholarship holders present essential aspects of their work or projects in the form of tandem presentations, thereby engaging in an interdis ciplinary exchange of knowledge and experience. In addition, by organising the work on their own, they define their own priorities and develop their personal strengths beyond their particular field of specialisation.

Personal development seminars Seminars prepare scholarship holders for their future role as leaders in industry, teaching and research in the building and construction sector. First and foremost, they receive training in the integrative skills of percep tion and communication. Topics such as job interview training, employee management, conversational skills and international etiquette are addressed. The seminars are tailored to meet the individual needs of the residents in cooperation with professional trainers.

Welcome excursion, summer party and Christmas party A joint excursion at the beginning of the winter semester promotes the integration of new scholarship holders and fosters a positive commu nity spirit. The summer party offers scholarship holders and guest scientists the op portunity to meet alumni and build effective social and professional networks. The Christmas party provides the opportunity to pause and look back on the past year.

Concert In keeping with its interdisciplinary and intercultural approach, the Oskar von Miller Forum fosters the cultural and social skills of the scholar ship holders. Therefore, concerts featuring young artists take place once per year to build bridges between architecture and music.

EVENTS ORGANISED IN COOPERATION WITH PARTNERS Associations and organisations have the opportunity to use the Oskar von Miller Forum as a venue for events themed around construction and building. Scholarship holders are invited to attend them and receive additional career inspiration. Sophisticated academic content is the basis for all events held at the Oskar von Miller Forum.

As founder and creative director of her Copenhagen-based firm, architect Dorte Mandrup inspires a highly committed international team of 70 every day. In addition, she is vice president of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, member of the Historic Buildings Council, adjunct professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and regularly takes on guest professorships. Her work won numerous awards, including the Green Good Design Award of the Chicago Athenaeum, the Bauwelt Award, the C.F. Hansen-Medaille, the Finn Juhl Design Prize and recently the lifelong Honorary Grant of the Danish Arts Foundation. Her powerful light and sound installation – an artistic interpretation of her cultural project in Greenland, the Icefjord Information Centre – took centre stage at the Venice Biennale of Architecture.

CONDITIONS AND BEYOND › Dorte Mandrup

Dorte Mandrup’s lecture focused on her landmark projects that were, or are currently being created at UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Icefjord Centre is located 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and the Wadden Sea Centre, a thatched exhibition centre, on Denmark’s rough West coast. The architect gave an emphatic account of her approach to construction projects in such sensitive environments. The starting point of the process is to understand and investigate the prevailing conditions. What it takes is a comprehensive interpretation of all accessible facts and feelings, far beyond the mere level of observation.

Dorte Mandrup pointed out, "Embedding a building into a landscape gives us the opportunity to emphasize the uniqueness of the place. The relationship between the physicality of a building and the vastness of a landscape brings the potential to work at countless different scales. We can bring out the drama and splendour of a great natural landscape through the arrangement, shape and types of materials we use in a building"

Guy Nordenson put the emphasis of his lecture on “Working Structures” – in allusion to his recently published book Reading Structures. The book presents around 40 structures and buildings, organized around three the matic sections: “Simply Supported,” “Building History” and “Engineering Ephemera.” “Working Structures” complemented the considerations included in the book, highlighting projects that have been dealing with questions both of social and climate change in New York City and on the North Atlantic coast since 11 September 2001 with a view to tropical storms and rising sea levels.

DIGITAL ETHICS IN THE KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY ›  Sarah Spiekermann

The central questions Sarah Spiekermann addresses in her work are ques tions related to values, data protection and ethics in the context of digitalisation. Ever since Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge, it has been clear that knowledge has an ethical dimension. “Knowledge is power,” wrote Francis Bacon. But what is knowledge in the first place? Are our digital systems actually able to know? Or are they just able to make assumptions based on AI and Big Data that are then transformed into knowledge by selected individuals?

K eynote lectures

L EC T URE S

In her lecture, Sarah Spiekermann brought these central questions of our knowledge society to the fore and encouraged the audience to reflect and discuss. At the same time, she highlighted measures we can take – both in technological and social terms – to achieve a little more trans parency and data quality as well as practical knowledge-building. The over all aim should be to make our society more knowledgeable.

» We should humbly acknowledge that we’re at the very beginning of a true knowledge society. SARAH SPIEKERMANN

Michel Desvigne is a landscape architect internationally renowned for his rigorous and contemporary designs and for the originality and relevance of his research work. He has provided landscape designs in collaboration with major world architectural studios such as Herzog & de Meuron, Foster + Partners and Richard Rogers and Rem Koolhaas. Among Michel Desvigne’s most renowned awards are the 2019 AIA Honor Award for the Detroit East Riverfront Framework Plan (US), the 2014 European Prize for Urban Public Space and France’s 2011 Grand Prize for Urbanism for his continual contribution to and reflection upon the city and surroundings.

TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPES ›  Michel Desvigne

Michel Desvigne’s work characteristically aims at highlighting landscapes and rendering them visible. His lecture gave a vivid account of this, presenting numerous projects, such as the Detroit East Riverfront in the United States or the Old Harbour and other public spaces in Marseille. In addition, Michel Desvigne described how the landscape architect’s profession is changing and how its challenges today – unlike earlier times – are no longer related only to aesthetic aspects, but increasingly to climate and ecological issues. Today, most landscaping projects are about transforming spaces. Frequent objectives include densification, land use conversion and embellishment. These transformation processes take time, regardless of whether they involve extensive landscapes or urban subdistricts. Michel Desvigne emphasized that any initial vision we have should prove sufficiently adaptable to respond to economic chal lenges and changing requirements.

FUTURE IMAGES OF SUSTAINABILITY ›  Harald Welzer

In his lecture, Harald Welzer made it plain that the coronavirus crisis brings to light the shortfalls of our society. While society is locked down in a deep slumber, a particularly clear image becomes visible, as if frozen in a still image. It discloses the scandalous workings of the meat industry, the impact of long supply chains and the fact that our society is all about “more and more” and “bigger and bigger.” Harald Welzer emphasized that change is essential, but that it does not necessarily involve sacrifice. All people benefit from car-free cities and sustainable food production. That is why a modern democracy needs im ages of a better future. Civil society has many laboratories that develop a novel culture of living and doing business. The FUTURZWEI foundation – with its co-founder and director Harald Welzer – is committed to increasing the public visibility and political empowerment of such laboratories by telling the success sto ries of novel approaches and sharing them with civil society as a message in a bottle in cooperation with established media.

Material Matters THOMAS RAU TURNTOO | AMSTERDAM

Thomas Rau founded the first two companies in the Netherlands specialized in circular economy. In 2010, he co-founded Turntoo, a consul tancy for the architecture of a new economy. His architectural firm RAU pioneered the implementation of innovative climate-neutral buildings with a 100 % circulation potential. Thomas Rau won various awards: in 2013 he was elected Architect of the Year in the Netherlands. In addition, he won the ARC 13 Oeuvre Award, honouring his substantial contribution to promoting and implementing sustainable architecture and circular building. His book Material Matters (Uhlstein Verlag), written together with his wife Sabine Oberhuber, is a bestselling book about Circular Economy.

MATERIAL MATTERS ›  Thomas Rau

In the view of Thomas Rau, our current way of doing business is a oneway street. He made it very clear that a system based on “extracting, processing, using and discarding resources” has become disconnected from the fundamental law of life and earth. According to Thomas Rau, the circular economy is the imperative new economic model. Consumers are no longer owners but users, waste is history and materials are vested with rights, while their identities are registered in an online library.

Thomas Rau discussing with scholarship holders Paula Giauque and Jakob Deffner

The fact that the circular economy is not a utopia but in fact works is shown by the projects of architect Thomas Rau. His architectural firm pio neered the implementation of innovative climate-neutral buildings with a 100 % circulation potential. The Triodos Bank’s recently completed, fully reconstructible office building is built entirely of timber and was elect ed the most sustainable and innovative building of the year 2019/20.

» MANAGE RISKS BETTER WITH BIM. ILKA MAY

One of the major success factors in building projects is effective collaboration between all parties involved – from planners and designers to those implementing the work. A digitalised approach to construction based on BIM, Building Information Modelling, is therefore one of the most important strategies for future building. In her lecture, BIM expert Ilka May gave an account of the potential of digital processes and technologies, as well as the main impediments to their establishment in Germany. In addition, she ex plained how designers benefit from BIM and who pays the cost. Ilka May underlined that digital twins offer particular potential for more fore sight and a better basis for investment decisions in the construction sector. This led to a lively discussion after the lecture.

ILKA MAY LocLab GmbH Ilka May is CEO of LocLab Consulting GmbH, a company specialised in creating digital twins – virtual copies of real or planned ob jects and spaces. In 2017, she co-chaired the EU BIM Task Group before becoming a key advisor to the update procedure of the BIM strategy adopted by the German railway operator Deutsche Bahn.

His book published in 2017, “Stress and the City. Why Cities Make Us ill. And Why They Are Still Good for Us” is not the only means by which Mazda Adli investigates cities as stress factors. Together with the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft, he founded the Interdisciplinary Forum Neurourbanism, a research platform that brings together neurosciences and urban research to better understand the effects of urban living on emotions, behaviour and mental health. In his lecture, the psychiatrist and stress researcher advocated an inter disciplinary approach for academia, culture and politics to develop new visions for cities. Mazda Adli said: “Cities are good for us, we just have to learn how to make them livable places.”

S SP SAILER STEPAN UND PARTNER GMBH The demolition and rebuilding of Hotel Königshof, a superior 5-star hotel at the heart of Munich, is a massive challenge for all parties involved. The old 6-storey building will be replaced by a new 10-storey building. Tobias Schneider from the structural engineering firm SSP presented the project to the scholarship holders. Matthias Filus, also a structural engineer with SSP, explained the calculations performed to investigate the impact of the construction works on the nearby underground and rail way tunnels. The infrastructural dimension of the project is remarkable, given that the hotel with its 40 × 60-metre footprint will span two existing underground tubes. In addition, the site has a very busy tramline running along its circumference as well as a city train station located under ground. Representing the clients, Prof. Arnold Tautschnig, bau-control ZT, gave an account of the problems and challenges from his perspective. Katrin Meyer and Nils Heintze – both from Leitwerk – described the schedule and logistics of the construction project. After the lecture, the scholarship holders showed great interest in the op portunity to discuss with the expert practitioners.

Film nights N EW INPUT IN A NEW FORMAT Watching films together and discussing them has been possible even in times of the coronavirus pandemic. The first Film night was staged as a Zoom event and featured a documentary about designer Dieter Rams. Gary Hustwit’s film includes scenes playing at the Oskar von Miller Forum, where Dieter Rams paid a visit in 2016 and discussed design questions with Fritz Frenkler, Professor of Industrial Design at the TUM. Renzo Piano: The Architect of Light spotlights the building process of the Centro Botín in Santander. The controversial discussions between client, architect and local residents provide insights into the complexity of planning large-scale projects, but also into the work of one of the most renowned architects of our times. The award-winning French documentary Tomorrow is about finding solu tions to a different future. The makers of the film – actress Mélanie L aurent and French activist Cyril Dion – interview experts and visit projects and initiatives around the world that pursue ecological, economic and democratic ideas. In the discussion that followed, the scholarship hold ers asked themselves whether the projects shown can provide guid ance for our future.

Seminars EADERSHIP SEMINARS FOR PERSONAL L D EVELOPMENT TRAINING In leadership seminars specially tailored to the needs of the future archi tects, civil engineers and construction technicians, an experienced business coach prepares the scholarship holders for their role as future lead ers in the construction industry. The seminar held in November 2019 was entirely about “Working in a team – conflict and culture.” Aspects included dealing with conflicting in terests and reaching consensus, or handling difficult situations and conflicts in different cultures, or how to work together in multinational teams. In addition, the participants had the opportunity to practice conflict resolution strategies. Due to the coronavirus crisis, the leadership seminar “Leading myself in the working world” was implemented as a 2-day Zoom event in May. This training helps the scholarship holders to identify their own strengths and weaknesses, improve their motivation and prepare for job inter views. All participants had the opportunity to take part in a trial job interview and received specific feedback on their performance.

Two three-hour online learning nuggets were moreover offered in May and June 2020. The first nugget dealt with “Personal goals and career.” The scholarship holders learned about methods for identifying their goals and milestones. The second nugget, “Emotional intelligence,” helped the participants improve their interaction abilities with others and become more aware of their own patterns of behaviour. In addition, individual career coaching was offered for the first time. These meet and greet interviews were carried out by an external career coach via telephone or Zoom. The scholarship holders were able to par ticipate on a voluntary basis through advance booking. This offer found an excellent response and a total of 35 interviews was conducted.

Germany’s highest summit was the destination of the joint excursion of the schol arship holders, guest scientists and team members at the beginning of the winter semester. At 2,962 metres, the mountaintop offers a mag nificent 360° panoramic view of Alpine peaks in four countries. Unfortu nately, the view was partially obscured due to inclement weather con ditions, but the first snowfall on the viewing platforms nevertheless made it a great experience for the scholarship holders from all over the world. A further highlight was the ride on the new Zugspitzbahn, an aerial c able car that carries half a million passengers a year. Featuring the world’s tallest cable car steel support (127 metres) and an elevation gain of 1,945 metres, it also holds the record for the world’s longest free span (3,213 metres). A guided tour of the buildings on top of the Zugspitze provided the future civil engineers, architects and construction technicians with interesting background information about the construction of this impres sive work of engineering.

Universal Design Exhibition MCBW Munich The concept of Universal Design was presented to the professional public of architects and designers for the ninth time at a daily opened exhibition at the Oskar von Miller Forum in the framework of the international Munich Creative Business Week (MCBW ).

Like almost all other events of the year 2020, the 9th Universal Design Exhibition at the Oskar von Miller Forum was dramatically influenced by the COVID -19 situation. The Institute for Universal Design had to resort to a re duced version of its eight-day programme linked to the Munich Creative Business Week 2020, since all activities offered during the leading design week had to be cancelled for understandable reasons on 12 March 2020.

An odd sense of uncertainty was perceptible during the shortened exhibition period and significantly influenced the events addressing digital isation in the care sector and social services, a designed city or the judging of the exhibition products by the 100-member jury of experts and users.

THOMAS BADE Founder and CEO of IUD – Institute for Universal Design

A s this has also had an impact on the 10th anniversary of the Oskar von Miller Forum, we nearly forgot to congratulate the Forum’s team and express our gratitude for their support, which has helped Universal Design be perceived at a European level and beyond. We thank you very much!
