PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Say What?
O
ver the past year, we have welcomed a number of new residents who have “escaped” the big cities of the U.S. to experience the “Southern lifestyle” here on St. Simons Island. This isn’t uncommon. In fact, most members of the EIL family hail from great places like New York, Michigan, Texas, and even Iowa! Of course, once they moved to the island they had to get accustomed to some of our Southern colloquialisms. I was thinking maybe some of our newest residents might benefit from learning some Southern sayings. There’s one for every occasion! Whether you are from another part of the country or another country altogether, here are some expressions that will help you blend in down here below the Mason-Dixon Line. She’s pitching a hissy fit.
She could make a preacher cuss.
Incidentally, I’ve always wondered why in every American song that involves a train ride, the train is always heading South. Nobody ever sings about traveling up North. It’s almost as if the South is where everyone finds their roots and “home.” So, welcome home!
She’s so skinny, she has to run around in the shower to get wet.

I’m so broke I can’t pay attention.
He’s about as useful as a steering wheel on a mule.
If that boy had an idea, it would die of loneliness.

This ain’t my first rodeo.
She’s crazier than a sprayed roach. He’s faster than a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest.
Bless your heart.

ne project that many people began at home in the past year was gardening.
Having fresh veggies and herbs not only saves you a trip to the store, it supports healthy cooking and eating habits. Why buy processed, altered, or chemically treated when you can grow fresh? If you don’t have the space in your yard to plant vegetables and herbs, you can always grow a small container or window garden inside. To start, you’ll need to find containers with a drainage hole at the bottom that are large enough to allow the roots of your plant to grow. Recycling plastic yogurt or deli containers works well if you add drainage holes. It’s also helpful to use gravel in the bottom for extra drainage. You’ll also want to make sure each container is placed on a tray, dish, or saucer to capture excess water so as not to ruin the surface or furniture on which they sit.

You want to reproduce outdoor light conditions as best as possible by using window light or spending some money on grow lights. Most vegetables need at least 4-6 hours of sunlight per day, while herbs need a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight and many varieties require 12 hours or more. Low humidity can also take a toll on indoor plants, so mist them daily using a spray bottle to mist them with water each day or use a coolmist humidifier to keep the moisture in the air. But when it comes time to water, remember less is more. Keep the soil moist, in the sweet spot between dry and damp. Since the plants aren’t subjected to intense outdoor heat, they won’t dry out as frequently, so you’ll need to be careful not to overwater. Veggies and herbs should sprout relatively quickly. However, it may take a few weeks or

This year has been all about riding the waves and adapting to the changing currents for the Coastal Symphony of Georgia
heir season has been creatively reimagined with the guiding hand of music director and conductor Michelle Merrill, the enthusiastic participation of the musicians, and the gracious support of sponsors and patrons, resulting in five outdoor concerts instead of the usual four in the auditorium. They are extremely grateful for the loyal support of so many sponsors through this challenging period. Now, as they look ahead to the 2021-22 season, this year’s annual fundraising gala, Cabaret, is more important than ever to keep the music playing. Cabaret 2021 promises to be unlike the galas held in past years. Like the concert series, it has been reimagined in an outdoor setting designed to capture the true “aloha” spirit of the Hawaiian islands, one of positivity and
sharing friendship. This slightly more casual but still elegant evening, but will include extraordinary entertainment that embodies the rich heritage of tropical islands through song and dance. While this is not a black tie affair, it’s also not your stereotypical luau on the beach. Think more “beach wedding,” when it comes to attire and be prepared to have some fun! Seating at the venue will be limited for your safety, so you’ll want to get your tickets today to make sure you don’t miss this unique event. Aloha Cabaret will take place Friday, May 21 at 6:00 p.m. You’ll enjoy warm ocean breezes and the soft glow of sunset from the outdoor Atlantic Court tent at The King and Prince Golf & Beach Resort. From the moment you walk under the canopy of Palms and hear the sound of the conch shell horn and rhythms of traditional Hawaiian mele (songs), you’ll be transported to the beauty and
easy charm of those other islands. The Cabaret Steering Committee of Janice Lamattina, Paige Slack, Drew Holland, and Coastal Symphony of Georgia Executive Director Sharon Flores, with the assistance of Men’s Committee Chair Don Myers and Board President Majorie Mathieu have imagined a magical night that combines the excitement of Cabaret with the friendliness and warmth of the Aloha spirit. Flip through these pages to get a feel for the surf vibe and fun atmosphere they want to create with prop assistance from longboards courtesy of Geoffrey Gable of sml surf to Chris Busby of Live Oak Fitness willing to take up the conch shell or ukulele upon request. There will even be opportunities for audience participation. It’s almost here! Dorothy’s Cocktail
& Oyster Bar will be opening on St. Simons Island later this month. The new mid-island restaurant will offer tantalizing lunch and dinner menus that feature mouthwatering appetizers, like the Sambal Fried Oysters, and delightful entrees, like the Lobster Roll or Whole Fried Snapper with curry. The kitchen boasts a custom-made wood burning grill and oven which will soon turn out some of the restaurant’s most flavorful dishes. From fire-kissed oysters and roasted chicken to crispy pork shanks, they’ll be serving up some sensational dishes. But enough about the food, let’s talk beverages! Cocktail connoisseurs, you’re in for a treat! Dorothy’s will have one of the largest spirit collections on St. Simons Island. Their opening
cocktail your bartender concocts. For those who prefer wine over spirits, Dorothy’s creative wine list will focus on vineyards around the world and grape varietals that are not generally present on a “by-the-glass” list. This will give their guests the opportunity to try something new with each meal. Opening a restaurant of their own was a longtime dream of owners Claire and Daniel Auffenberg. When visiting St. Simons Island from their home in Dallas in 2019, they decided that the charming island would be wonderful place to execute their goal. “We got married here in 2018 and never imagined that we’d actually be living on this incredible island, chasing our dream,” said Claire. “But the more we thought about it, we realized this was the perfect place to realize our restaurant dream.”

So, you’re probably wondering, who’s Dorothy? Daniel explains, “In opening this restaurant, we wanted to honor the legacy of my
grandmother, Dorothy, who was also known as Dottie. She cooked for her family six nights a week and loved every minute of it. She was always so welcoming and gracious. I don’t think I’ve ever met another person as sweet or as kind as she was.” He adds wistfully, “I really wish that she was here to see this. I know she would be proud, but I also know she is looking down from above with a big smile. We can’t wait to open our doors and offer people the same gracious hospitality that my grandmother always did.” Dorothy’s Cocktail & Oyster Bar is located at 12 Market Street and will be open Tuesday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. You can see their menu at dorothysssi.com. Keep an eye out for the opening date, then stop by for a bite and a beverage, and be sure to raise a glass to Dottie.

lanning is well underway for Frederica Academy’s Derby Day signature fundraiser with Co-Chairs Elizabeth & Zach Powell and Dana & Denny Carter at the helm. Wheels that had ground to halt in 2020, due to restrictions on gatherings and safety concerns, started turning once again as soon as the announcement was made that the 2021 Kentucky Derby would be run at Churchill Downs on May 1. Everyone is excited that this fantastic Spring soirée will return albeit with some deviations from its normal format. Sea Island’s Retreat Clubhouse will once again be the venue, but this year the entire event will take place outside on the lawn. Fortunately, presenting sponsor Beachview Event Rentals & Design is no stranger to providing tents and outdoor seating at Derby Day. They’ve been using their winning combination of expertise and style to “set the stage,” so to speak, for years. Beginning when the doors open at 5:00 p.m. and you grab your first julep, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy delicious food prepared by the Sea Island culinary team, the always exciting simulcast of the Kentucky Derby, and entertainment by Mason Waters & the Groove AllStars. Mason will also emcee the live auction which will be held as usual during the event and will feature the one-of-a-kind experiences and trips that always spark lively bidding competition. Out of an abundance of caution, there will be no dance floor or post-race band party, but that won’t put a damper on the fun! The silent auction featuring art, jewelry, fabu-
lous gift baskets and more will still be held, but you’ll be browsing the items through an online bidding platform. No app download is required; however, patrons will need a smartphone at the event to view and bid on auction
items. Raffle tickets will also be sold via the online auction site. The live auction will only take place online in the event that COVID-19 or inclement weather conditions cancel the planned activities at Retreat. The biggest difference this year is that individual tickets to Derby Day will not be sold. Event tickets are limited due to COVID-19 restrictions instituted by Sea Island in accordance with the Governor’s orders and will only be available through sponsorship packages. Patrons will be able to purchase sponsorships and raffle tickets, as well as view and bid on auction items online. Sponsors will be recognized on the auction website, which replaces the traditional printed event program. Derby Day is a time-honored Frederica Academy tradition and the funds it generates through sponsorships and auctions make an important difference in the school’s ability to provide critical support for Frederica’s extraordinary students and dedicated teachers. Your help in that endeavor is needed now more than ever. For more information and information about sponsorship, visit fredericaacademy.org

FOLLOW THE HERITAGE TRAIL
I
n February, St. Simons Island’s World War II Home Front Museum was announced as one of ten sites across the state that make up the new World War II Heritage Trail. The staff of these sites are excited about this partnership to bring a new experience to visitors, families, and groups. At the sites, visitors can learn more about Georgia’s impressive legacy of inspiring wartime stories. Southern states were critical to the war effort during World War II (1941-1945), and none more so than Georgia. Over 300,000 Georgians served in the military and thousands of civilians worked in rapidly expanding defense industries. When the World War II Home Front Museum opened in 2018, Coastal Georgia Historical Society Executive Director Sherri Jones teamed up with Scott Loehr, President of the Mighty Eighth Museum in Savannah to reach out to other WWII sites across the state. “The response that we received was overwhelm-
ingly positive,” says Jones. “Within a year we had established a close working relationship. We were united by our passion for WWII history and our eagerness to make Georgia’s rich heritage more accessible to all.”
“The challenges of 2020 caused many travelers to rethink how and where to travel. Road trips have emerged as a relatively safe way to explore, and many are seeking travel with a purpose.”
The Heritage Trail is one of only four World War II Trails in the nation, and will be promoted domestically and internationally by Explore Georgia, the tourism division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, through their website ExploreGeorgia.org, media outreach and sales efforts. Georgia residents and leisure visitors are encouraged to visit the collection to learn more about the state’s involvement in the war, both at home and abroad. Scott McQuade, President of the Golden Isles Convention and Visitors Bureau is excited to support this new experience that will appeal to visitors seeking drivable destinations and meaningful travel. McQuade said,
Trail visitors can take flight in a World War II airplane, build a Liberty ship, explore a pilot training base, march in the boots of the Band of Brothers, and hear personal stories of courage, character, and patriotism displayed by the men and women involved. Suggested routes for North Georgia, Middle Georgia, and the Coast make it easy for visitors to experience two or three locations over a weekend. A Trail “passport” gives visitors the opportunity to track their progress along the route, debrief their visits, and receive a confirmation stamp with the “V for Victory!” Learn more about the Georgia World War II Heritage Trail by visiting georgiawwiitrail.org.

aving taught etiquette classes for twenty years, I can tell you that has its ups and downs. The downside is that no one wants to sit next to you at dinner, and if they do, they assume you know the answer to every etiquette question known to mankind. The upside is the people I’ve had the opportunity to meet either through The Protocol School or just by teaching and participating in events. A few weeks ago, I had the chance to hear Ambassador Capricia Marshall, Former United States Chief of Protocol, speak on “Why Etiquette Matters.” The bottom line: it does matter. It will always matter. Rules of etiquette will evolve with the times but they will always matter. So, in that spirit, this month I’m focusing on “Basic Things our Children Need to Know.”
Many teachers refer to “please,” “thank you” and “you’re welcome” as “magic” words. While not magic, they help society run smoothly. Teaching children to make eye contact and use these words will help them make a positive impression. USE “MAGIC” WORDS.
Back to the Basics Offer Your Seat to Others. Children and teenagers should always offer their seat to older people. Teach your child how to politely do this and teach them how to stand to the side without drawing attention to themselves. Wait until everyone is seated, everyone is served, everyone is listening, or everyone has had a turn. This teaches patience, which is an important life skill. We do a lot of waiting in life! It also provides a good time to work on conversation skills.
PRACTICE PATIENCE.
harder for boys. Practice voice modulation. Give examples. Encourage children to open doors for others, help others with tasks, and to allow others to go first. Teach them to congratulate and cheer on others.
THINK OF OTHERS.
RESPOND TO INVITATIONS. As parents we often
PUT DOWN THE CELL PHONE. When you’re out in public, take away your child’s cell phone (and put yours down too)! This forces them to look around, to observe people, and provides excellent opportunities for conversation.
RSVP for our children, sometimes without even asking if they want to attend. Everyone is busy and invitations arrive via text and email. They all deserve a response. Discuss any invitations with your child and use the opportunity to teach them how to respond politely, even if declining because you won’t be available. Have them call the invitee to thank them and accept or explain why they cannot and maybe offer an alternative plan.
Mothers often say, “Please use your inside voice.” Children need to understand the difference. This is often
Discuss and practice these points at home. Enjoy this beautiful month and just keep doing your best.
THE INSIDE VOICE.

The Amazing Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin by
J ohn
A d a m s
O
ne of the most delightful visual highlights of any trip to beautiful St. Simons Island is the opportunity to view a pod of dolphins as they move up and down the coast, leaping playfully from time-to-time, as they go about their God-given business of daily life. I find it absolutely remarkable that these wonderful creatures are mammals, breathing fresh air just like you and me, and are highly intelligent. Dolphins are capable of complex problem solving. They thrive on social interaction. Dolphins not only have the ability to learn as individuals, but also can later pass that same knowledge on to their offspring. Dolphins use tools. They are known to use sea sponges to protect their rostrum (beak) while foraging on the bottom of the ocean. And they pass this knowledge on to their young. An Atlantic bottlenose dolphin will be almost 8 feet long and 500-700 pounds. In the wild, their typical lifespan is about 17 years. Dolphins are second only to humans in brain-tobody weight ratio. Dolphins can make up to 500 clicking noises per second. These sounds travel underwater
E E AT ABL RIV VAIL P E SA RE TH OOM R G NIN
DI
until they encounter objects, then bounce back to their dolphin senders, revealing details like the location, shape, and size of their target. This is, in fact, a form of sonar. Because they can only breathe consciously, dolphins shut down one hemisphere of their brains in order to avoid drowning while sleeping. While resting, the other half of the brain monitors what’s going in the environment and controls breathing functions.
Atlantic bottlenose dolphins have between 80 -100 conical teeth, and swallow their food whole. They eat fish, shrimp, eels, and squid. As all mammals do, dolphins are actually born with hair. A baby dolphin is born with whiskers on its upper jaw. These usually fall out soon after birth. An Atlantic bottlenose dolphin can, on average, hold its breath for 5-7 minutes. Surely we can all agree that these incredible animals make up a wonderful part of our environment, the one we call St. Simons Island.
Dolphins have been trained for military uses such as locating sea mines or detecting and marking enemy divers. Dolphins don’t make any noises with their mouth; they don’t even have vocal cords. All sounds come through the dolphin’s blowhole, at the top of their heads.

Creative Pairings Pay Off In the next several issues of Elegant Island Living, the Davis Love Foundation will spotlight some of the programs and charities impacted through the support of individuals and businesses during the 2020 RSM Classic.

ince The RSM Classic arrived in the Golden Isles in 2010, the Official PGA TOUR event has raised more than $22.2 million for local and national charities focused on children and families in need. This number includes more than $4.6 million raised during a very challenging year turned upside down by the global COVID-19 pandemic. As with other organizations focused on raising funds to do good in their communities and beyond, the Davis Love Foundation recognized that it must be creative in its planning to continue to raise dollars to support charities providing hands-on services during this critical time. This was true with one of the tournament’s signature events, The RSM Classic Charity Putting Challenge. The event traditionally pairs a PGA TOUR golfer with Boys and Girls Club members and Special Olympics athletes. The teams enter into fun
and friendly, yet fierce, competition on an obstacle-style putting course with humorous commentary and on-course interviews to raise awareness for the two charities. With PGA TOUR protocols, including COVID testing and social distancing, the 2020 event required a new direction. The Foundation leadership recruited five teams of two PGA TOUR pros to compete for five (instead of two) local charities: Boys and Girls Club, Communities in Schools, First Tee, Southeast Georgia Health System Foundation, and Special Olympics. Five $10,000 corporate partners, CapTech, Chick-fil-A, MetLife, Southeast Georgia Health System Foundation and Workday were recruited and

paired with a team of pros. RSM, the best title sponsor in golf, contributed another $35,000. This pool of $85,000 was distributed among the five charities based on the team’s finish. (See scoreboard of final results.) “We are so appreciative of the support of these partners who come from within and outside our community,” said Director of Sales John McKenzie. “These dollars directly impacted children and families in the Golden Isles. We have never been more grateful for our community, corporate and charity partners. They were a bright spot in 2020.” The total raised for local charities during the 2020 tournament exceeded half a million dollars. A bright spot, indeed!

Your home is more than a building or an address. It’s where you experience life, connection, and growth. That is why our agents find what they do so rewarding! Each month we are going to take you into the home of one of our agents. See what they love and value most about their homes and where they live. Calm understated and elegant are a few attributes of the Yacht Club and why we fell in love with the community. It is ultimately where we decided to build our home just a little over 2 years ago. The panoramic marsh, tidal creek and water views are what sold us on the location. We built our home to showcase the views from almost every window. To me, living on the marsh is like watching a painting that is forever changing. The wide tidal swings create new looks hourly, while each season adds its own special hues. When we are at home, we tend to spend most of our time on our back porch relaxing, looking out over the Spartina waving in and out of the salt air breezes, with the occasional heron or egret passing through. Our back porch is where we snuggle up around the fireplace on chilly evenings and where we cool off in the shade on hot summer days, after a dip in the pool. Another one of my favorite places to spend time is our kitchen/dining room. I truly love our entire home, but nothing gives
Nadia JohNsoN
me greater pleasure than cooking with family and friends, sharing life stories and laughter over a meal. Cooking some dishes of my Eastern European culture, French and Italian cuisines, are very often the meals of choice in our home... I have too many favorites! Every house has arms, legs and a brain, but for me, the dining room and kitchen is the heart of our home and I am thankful every day that it beats strong. Both my husband and myself put a lot of thought and love into designing and decorating our home husband put all the ideas on paper, and I changed them! One thing we both agreed on right away is having our own his and her master baths and closets. Having your own space to get ready in is truly the secret to a happy marriage. As far as my favorite piece of décor, it would have to be my shoe wall! No explanation needed. To me what makes a house a home is the people who live there. That is why I love real estate. At the end of the day, a house is a place where great memories are made, and that is when a house becomes a home. Nadia Johnson is a Sales Associate at DeLoach Sotheby’s International Realty. World War II’s Welding Women: The Surrency Sisters
W
hen the Allies desperately needed cargo ships, women did their part to supply them by working at shipyards across the country, including at the J.A. Jones Shipyard in Brunswick. Between 1942 and 1945, the Brunswick yard launched 85 Liberty ships. Nanelle, Carobeth, and Lauree Surrency were just three of the 1,000 women who worked at the shipyard and played a small part in the big business of winning World War II. All three of the Surrency sisters, Jesup natives, became welders at the Brunswick yard. The population of Brunswick nearly tripled during the war years due almost entirely to people moving to the city to join the shipyard workforce. Though lacking experience, new employees were often put to work after only a few days of training.
Carobeth explained: “First I went to school for a week. Soon as I learned to tack they put me out to tacking, and in a month I was doing flat welding, vertical welding, overhead welding. I weighed about 110 pounds. I was 20 years old, loved life, wasn’t afraid of anything. I would go to the bottom of the ship and weld, or I’d go to the top of the mast pole and weld.” Even though these intrepid young women downplayed the hazards, they acknowledged that welding was dangerous and physically demanding. Lauree remembered: “It was a challenge – to think about hanging on with one hand on a scaffold and your torch in the other hand and welding that way. I’m sure we took some risks, but I never did get injured, except once in a while I’d get an eye burn from the welding.”
The women approached their work with the knowledge that lives might be lost or saved depending on how fast a ship was built. As Nanelle said: “Give it all you’ve got and then some, and one day you’ll say, ‘I was a small part in that.’ ” The work done at the Brunswick yard undoubtedly helped ensure an Allied victory. This month’s images show two of the Surrency sisters in their roles at the shipyard. Carobeth Surrency Highsmith (top) holds onto a mast pole wearing her leather gloves

YOU DON’T GIVE TO US, YOU GIVE THROUGH US Creativity has not been cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. We have adapted to circumstances beyond our control, but now, more than ever, we need to be creative and resilient. Though limitations remain on what we can do, we can still find ways to inspire and celebrate the creative process and use the arts to shape and explore our world. Golden Isles Arts & Humanities continues its mission of celebrating the creativity in our community and remains committed to providing the best in the arts. Whether showcasing the talents of students and young people with exhibits, writing awards or the Golden Isles Penguin Project; or by encouraging a love of literary arts with programs like the NEA Big Read, we can bridge the gap until we come together to share in those experiences again.
